As another fortnight slips through our fingers and another House magazine hits the shelves, I'd like to dedicate this issue to Flt Lt Jon Egging, the Red Arrows pilot who was tragically killed following the display at last week's Bournemouth Air Show. Flt Lt Egging, 33, from Rutland, was killed when his Hawk T1 aircraft - Red 4 - crashed about 1km south east of Bournemouth Airport and by all accounts died a hero, by courageously avoiding civilians below. The Red arrows performed a breathtaking display as usual, which I witnessed first hand on the Saturday and the accident has certainly touched the hearts of locals who have rallied to show their support and condolences. It's moments like this that remind you how precious life is and with the potential that our loved ones can be taken at any moment we

must all do what we can to make the most of the ones we love. We've got a fantastic issue for you this fortnight, with a mass of interesting features, so grab a coffee and a biscuit, sit comfortably and enjoy. AFC Bournemouth News Cherries announce open day at Seward Stadium

AFC Bournemouth has this week announced an open day at the Seward Stadium to be held on Sunday 11th September. From 9.30am to midday, tours will be running throughout the morning and will culminate in the unveiling of the Cherries new third kit. t's only when you step inside that the house's secret is revealed - a 40ft long, 20ft deep basement that has been dug out beneath the garden. Lister paid ÂŁ4.1m for the property in September 2007 and invested a further ÂŁ2m to create the basement extension and completely renovate the interior. Thanks to his efforts, today the property boasts four bedrooms, three reception rooms and three bathrooms, all done to the highest standard. Above the new basement level, the ground floor is home to a drawing room, library and dining room. The first floor is totally given over to a sumptuous master bedroom suite, which includes a spacious bathroom and dressing room.

The end of the school holidays is nigh for another year and without sounding like a humbug, I for one am rather pleased. I have always dreaded turning into one of those parents who spend the six-weeks moaning about how they will entertain the children owing to the ‘British Summer’ of rain. But I do have to say things are not as easy as they used to be. Thinking back to when I was a kid, we had six long weeks of sunny days and balmy evenings. We were happy to play in the ‘rec down the road’ for the entirety, with a round of homemade ham and cheese sandwiches and a big bottle of weak orange squash. Those days were character building for the children of yester-year, every summer there was always one ‘bully’ who would scare all the kids senseless, there was always a ‘romance’ and a girl vs. boys football match (which of course we won every year). With so much choice and modern technology, expectations from the youth of today, with regards to entertainment, are so much higher. Playing ‘down the rec’ has been replaced with trips to the Fontana HE 3D-cinema, sports camps, theme-parks, holidays, The expensive computer consoles, smartphones and laser quest. 8 In fact, it is not just kids who struggle with an overabundance of modern technology, a recent survey carried out by Ofcom revealed that almost half of smart phone users are officially addicted, with most needing a ‘fix’ every five minutes. The survey also reported that a quarter of adults have a smartphone by their side at meals, some use them at the cinema and even on the loo. It is hard to imagine life pre-smartphone but sometimes my iphone can be the bane of my life. Model-turned-presenter Amanda Lamb is fronting new series What The Neighbours Did. She discusses that property show, which celebrities’ homes she’d love to look around and whether we can expect more A Place In The Sun

Her latest series, What The Neighbours Did, is new and exclusive to Home and can be seen week nights at 10pm. Amanda lives in south-west London with her fiance Sean McGuinness and their two-year-old daughter, Willow Rose.

Tell us about your new series, what the neighbours did? It’s about having a good nose around your neighbours’ houses to get ideas before you start embarking on huge projects yourself. You can walk down any street in the UK featuring a row of Victorian terraces or Edwardian houses and all of them have been built to exactly the same blueprints. What we all do to them inside is completely different, and so we take someone who maybe wants to do a kitchen extension, loft extension or basement conversion or something like that, and before they bring in the builders we take them to see three or four of their neighbours’ houses. Sounds like the show is right up your street. I jumped at the chance because I don’t think anyone else has done anything like this. It’s not a programme that I think we’ve seen before. It’s a fantastic show. It looks really glossy, and with so many of the houses in it you just think, ‘I want to live there’. Are you ever short on inspiration for decorating your own home? No, because I’m very good at stealing ideas from lots of people! When we bought our house, it was on the market and the house two doors down was on the market at the same time, both of which were identical inside, but ours was really

tired and dated, and the neighbours’ was beautiful. We bought our one because it was much cheaper and stole lots of her ideas. A love of interiors is a big thing for me so I do tend to buy lots of magazines and watch a lot of the home programmes. Which celebrity’s home would you like to look around? Simon Cowell’s new one. I film a lot on The Wright Stuff and his house is quite near the studio, so we drive past it an awful lot and it’s just been finished. They seem to have been doing it up for the last 40 years, but he’s got some rather strange lace curtains up against some of the windows. He obviously has someone who’s into interior design involved. I’d also like to have a look around William and Kate’s pad. I’d like to see if it’s ‘stuffy old Royals’ or if it’s all new and modern. Which of your shows is closest to your heart and why? Obviously A Place In The Sun, because it was the thing that launched me and where I met my future husband (Sean McGuinness). Also Market Kitchen because I worked with such a great team of people and got to eat amazing food with amazing chefs. I’m in the middle of filming one called My Flat-Pack Home at the moment. I’ve loved doing that and What The Neighbours Did because they’re different. No one’s done a whole series on kit homes yet, and nobody’s done a series looking at kit homes, so I think the beauty of the

property shows I do for Home is they’re quite innovative and forward-thinking. Will we see more a place in the sun one day? It’s really up to the powers-that-be at Channel 4 whether they want any more. There’s a market out there for buying property abroad and I would dearly love to do some more. Finally, what’s been your most challenging job so far? The first series of My Flat-Pack Home, because we started filming that in the winter, and it was the worst winter that I can remember. There was lots of time spent in muddy, snow-filled building sites, and all the builds were late or behind because of the bad weather. I think we just managed to deliver that by the skin of our teeth. That was the most challenging, but the beauty of that is we learned so much from that first series, and it was such a success that we’ve got 40 more shows that we’re in the middle of filming.

The advantage of being a celebrity chef, he says, is being used to cooking up a storm in awkward spaces. "I've done demos in a number of kitchens where you do quite elaborate food on minimal equipment with not much room. "The key is to think it through in advance. Consider, 'How would I make this dish in a small space for four people?' And if you can't work it out, don't do it!" Rimmer applies the same theory to cooking on a campsite. "If you go away with a group of friends, you don't have to go to a restaurant because you're fed up of beans. A camping stove is massively versatile and you can create really nice food," he points out. Practicality should inform what you decide to cook, he stresses, in his faintly Liverpudlian lilt. "Think about what you can do in a smaller space, and choose a good mix of fresh and tinned ingredients. There's no point in saying you're going to drive 15 miles to the nearest Waitrose to buy food. You just won't cook anything." Iornically, Rimmer, 47, who has two children, Florence, 13 and Hamish, 8, with wife Ali, isn't a huge fan of camping, but he is a dab hand at cooking outside. "A couple of years ago we went to a beautiful place in Santa Barbara, California, where you stay in log cabins and spend a lot of time in the great outdoors. "We're heading there again this summer and I'll hardly spend any

time in the little kitchen, I'll just cook outside." He's leading by example today, cooking fishcakes made from tinned salmon, mashed potato, spring onions, egg, breadcrumbs and mayo. They take him minutes to prepare, fry up and serve with his equally easy-to-make coleslaw (roughly chopped carrots, cabbage and lots more mayo). "Cold sides, like coleslaw, work just as well as hot ones," he advises. "If you tell yourself you've got to make hot side dishes, that puts the pressure on." For the marinade, combine all the ingredients in a bowl, add the lamb and marinate for at least 20 minutes. Fry the onion until soft, add the paste and cook for five minutes. Add the lamb and marinade (you may need a little water too). Cook covered for at least 40 minutes. Add the potatoes and cook for 20 minutes until soft. The best poles are the ones with no rings but with gliders inside. The curtains will then glide easily around the corners. However these are bent to measure so will be more expensive but will look and work so much better. For the curtain heading opt for a twin pleat, pinch pleat or wave as the curtains will then sit neatly underneath the pole and stack back well. A different and less expensive option is a corded track. The curtains will overlap when closed and there is no handling of the curtains. There are some good looking tracks on the market now which are available in white, silver and other colours. The key thing if finances allow is to have curtains and blinds made especially for the window and to have them professionally fitted. They will look amazing and work well for years to come. NEW FERRARI 458 SPIDER The new 458 Spider convertible joins the 458 Italia, widening the range of Ferrari’s mid-rear engined V8s. It is equipped with a fully retractable hard top, a world first for a sports car with this lay-out. The 458 Spider is powered by Ferrari’s naturally-aspirated, direct-injection 4.5 litre V8 which was nominated as the 2011 International Engine of the Year for its engineering excellence in terms of driveability, performance, economy and refinement. Top speed is 198 mph. The power is transferred to the road by Ferrari’s class-leading dual-clutch F1 paddle-shift transmission through the sophisticated E-Diff, itself integrated with the F1-Trac traction control and high-performance ABS for maximum handling dynamics. Certain features, such as its accelerator pedal mapping and the damping of the multilink suspension, have been calibrated to "guarantee maximum sportiness and absolute driving pleasure with the top down, in line with Maranello’s exclusive spider tradition," the company says. "Even the engine soundtrack has been honed to ensure that the car’s occupants are completely captivated by the drop-top driving experience." Entirely in aluminium, the hard-top solution adopted for the 458 Spider offers a number of advantages over the traditional folding soft-top, including a reduction of 25 kg in weight and a deployment time of just 14 seconds. Fully integrated into the styling of the car, the hard-top was engineered to fit neatly ahead of the engine bay without compromising aerodynamics or the performance of the car. The small space needed to house the roof enables the designers to include a rear bench for luggage behind the seats. For maximum comfort whilst driving top down the 458 Spider features an adjustable electric wind stop. The design was perfected to slow and diffuse the air in the cockpit, enabling normal conversation to be held even at speeds over 120mph.

PEOPLE WANT 20MPH SPEED LIMITS... APPARENTLY Sixty-seven per cent of people think that 20mph zones should be used outside schools according to the latest poll of nearly 4000 people by the Institure of Advanced Motorists. A further 38 per cent think that they should be used on roads with amenities such as parks and shops, but only a quarter would like to see them made the default speed limit in all built-up areas. Fortythree per cent of people would like the road outside their house to have a 20mph speed limit, but opinion is split here as 39 per cent wouldn’t. Forty per cent of people think that this speed limit is best enforced by speed limit signs, leaving the police to enforce the limit and the public to comply. Measures to physically slow people down are less popular, with only 20 per cent in favour of safety cameras, and 21 per cent supporting a combination of measures including road humps and cameras. Respondents felt that enforcing the limit in 20mph zones should be of medium priority compared to other road policing duties. IAM head of road safety Kevin Delaney said: "The IAM supports the selective use of 20mph speed limits where there is clear evidence that the risk of casualties will be reduced. But blanket 20mph speed limits or limits at inappropriate sites risk widespread disregard by drivers who do not recognise a necessity for them. Consultation with, and buy-in from, local people here is essential. Passive enforcement measures, such as speed bumps, are unpopular and active enforcement by police is unrealistic in the current financial climate. If lower speed limits are restricted to locations and times where there is an obvious need, responsible drivers, who are the overwhelming majority, will adhere to them without the need for enforcement.”

Road test PEUGEOT RCZ

The most common reaction to the stunning Peugeot RCZ sports coupe is ‘ it looks better than an Audi TT’ - and that’s quite a compliment. The RCZ is a great example of sleek purposeful car design – head-turning presence yet at an affordable price. Available with petrol and diesel engines and priced from just £21,245, the RCZ oozes a heady combination of potent charisma and cool image. There are three power outputs - 156hp petrol, 163hp diesel, and the most desirable model, the 200 hp GT. This one – my test model – offers a top speed of 146 mph, and a crackling 0-60 mph time of 7.6 seconds. And it has a nice surprise - combined fuel economy is a very acceptable 40.9 mpg. It costs £25,945, though the range actually starts at £21,245 if you can cope with less power. The engine is mated to a slick six-speed manual gearbox which is crisp to use and the gearing is well-spaced – you can reach 60mph in second. Even at hard pace, handling is exemplary, delightful to drive on twisty roads. Though the ride quality is understandably on the firm side, it is still compliant enough to avoid a visit to an osteopath, something not true of all sports coupes. In the cabin, there is a classy ambiance, a neatly sculptured fascia, grippy seats and wellsited switchgear. You immediately feel you are in a much more expensive car. The dials are beautiful, especially at night with their blue and orange lighting, and you get a clear digital speed reading as well as a conventional speedometer. The RCZ is a 2-plus-2 but anyone in the rear seats will need to be garden-gnome size or a circus contortionist. On the plus side, the boot is much bigger than you might expect, and loadpsace is boosted by drop-down seats backs which helps proivide a five-foot load length. The RCZ GT is well-specced with standard kit which includes climate control, sat-nav. alloys, power windows and mirrors, leather upholstery, front and rear parking sensors and even a chilled glovebox. There is also an automatic rear spoiler which can also be raised manually to further impress onlookers. FOR: Eye-popping styling, value-for-money specification, dynamic driving feel. AGAINST: Cramped rear seats - but the RCZ is so good, forget I mentioned it!

A popular place for a tattoo is along the side of the foot and Joss Stone loves her design so much that she has used it for inspiration for her new range of shoes for Nine West. Joss says “each of my tattoos holds a very special meaning for me, I love that the [collection] will incorporate some of my unique tattoo designs to give the line an even more personal connection.”

RUSSELL BRAND Proving their love for each other and for all things India once again, Katy Perry and Russell Brand got matching Sanskrit tattoos. The phrase they each had written on their arm reads “Anuugacchati Pravaha,” which means “go with the flow.” That seems apt for these two.

HAYDEN PANETTIERE Hayden sports this tattoo down her left side, and when she revealed it to the world at a film premier in New York it attracted attention for all the wrong reasons! The phrase on the 21-yearold’s back was meant to say ‘vivere senza rimpianti’, which is Italian for ‘live without regrets’. But her artist had inserted an extra ‘i’, so it read: ‘vivere senza rimipianti’. But Hyaden is said to still be proud of tattoo and sunned the negative press by saying “here’s the thing – if you’re going to get a tattoo in a language, just don’t ever go to that country, or a country where anyone speaks that language.”

KATIE CASSIDY The tattoo on her foot of three stars depicts Katie and her two sisters Jaime and Jenna, who also each have the same tattoo. Their mother Sherry has a tattoo with three shooting stars (the three daughters) coming from a centre star (Mum). Such a wonderful symbol of how connected they all are. Each woman wears it in a different location. Katie also has a tattoo word-ring going around her left ankle, which reads Love Thyself, Know Thyself, Be Thyself. Good words to live by!

CHERYL COLE Cheryl Cole has made no secret of her love for tattoos and her latest, said to be her seventh tattoo on her back is not one to be missed. Cheryl says “ithas a strong symbolic meaning and signifies a fresh start and my new independence.” The design is said to have taken no less than 11 hours to complete, as well as weeks to come up with the idea.

House columnist and local PR guru Liz Lean talks about the final events of the summer holidays

I know there will be a fair few parents out there quite relieved that the school holidays are over and the routine is back in place. Oh to have those heady few guaranteed weeks off every year! You never fully appreciate something until its gone do you? But there are only so many drizzly hours in the park, or being ‘typically British’ with gritted, chattering teeth on the beach that you can cope with during our ‘high’ summer. With one child going to secondary school for the first time and my second going into his next stage of junior school, they’re anxious like all of them as to what the year holds ahead. For the rest of us, we’re just pleased to know that the juggle of childcare versus work is somewhat less chaotic for a while. As mentioned last month, Liz Lean PR is looking forward to a full remit of events throughout September; Windfest, Feast of Dorset, Julia’s House Enchanted Ball. It’s all going on! And, as always happens, there are lots of clashes with special friends’ 40th birthdays (big shouts to Katy Poole and Amanda Eastwood), anniversaries (the out-laws, Pete and Dot, Nina and Nathan) and a general sense of not being able to be everywhere at the same time. Most frustrating. I need a clone! Even into October things are still lively and tickets are already on sale for the popular Beales ‘Girls Night Out’ fashion show and shopping event on Thursday 6th October at the Bournemouth store. A great way to help raise well needed funds for charity, save money on early Christmas gifts, treat yourself (20% off all products and 10% off cosmetics) and enjoy lots of entertainment too. We’ve welcomed a lovely new member to our team in (sunny) Sandbanks this month and she’s looking forward to meeting our many friends and colleagues across the conurbation. Rachael has joined us from Bristol and was originally a radio journalist before heading into the world of PR; she was even a breakfast radio presenter for a couple of years. She’s joined us to work on projects including the Shelley Manor development in Boscombe, Quay Living, Poole Harbour Commissioners and Bournemouth University’s Wellbeing in Practice so it’s a busy time for us overall. Not least due to the final rounds of Dorset Business Awards applications to find the greatest local companies. With judging now about to start on the many applications received, we are pleased to be in tandem with Dorset Chamber of Commerce on the Dorset Tourism Award this year. We’ll be rewarding those organisations that bring tourism income and awareness to the county – watch this space for our chosen finalists and the glitzy black tie awards ceremony at Poole’s Lighthouse on November 24th. The only award I am winning at the moment is the ‘unfit’ award. I think running and the ‘dolphin fin-flailing’ toning exercises on the beach I have mentioned in past columns may not be my thing, but I guess you have to try everything before settling on something that suits you. I plan to get back into some routine as soon as possible so watch out drivers for some wobbly bike riding around the area; I probably should treat myself to a high-vis vest! I look forward to inflicting another ramble next month!

It's official, that post-holiday feeling can wear off in as little as seven days. Dutch researcher Jessica de Bloom warned this week the feelgood benefits of a vacation disappear quickly, and unfortunately that tan you worked so hard on may fade just as fast. With recent research from Superdrug indicating 71% of British women feel more 136

confident with a golden glow, it's time to encourage an everlasting tan. But fear not, you can go from pale and pasty to post-holiday glow without so much as stepping on a plane. The faux glow is safer, quicker and more dramatic than its sunny sister alternative. Just as well, considering deep, rich-coloured skin, a la Farrah Fawcett, is bang on tan trend.

"Whatever the season, the dark 'retro tan' always looks good," says tanning expert James Read. "There are tricks to achieve this look but it's all about making the skin look glistening, golden and hot. Lotion products are making a comeback this season as they are the best formula to deliver that darker look."

"Exfoliate - this prepares a smooth base for your tan," advises Sun-Believable tanning guru James Harknett. "A gentle scrub is sufficient to remove dead skin cells and give a good foundation for a tan to cling to." Plan your tanning session and stay one step ahead with your hair removal. Wax 48 hours or shave 24 hours before tanning to avoid product entering open pores on your legs, which can resemble telltale spots. Moisturiser is both your friend and foe when it comes to tan prep, according to Harknett. "Don't use a moisturiser all over your body before tanning as it works as a barrier against the dihydroxyacetone or DHA, the tanning agent that reacts with the proteins on our skin," he says. "But do apply an oil-free moisturiser sparingly to the feet, elbows, cuticles, hands and back of heels, only. Apply a small amount of moisturiser to the base of your palm, using a semi-circular motion. This allows the tan line to naturally fade, so nobody knows you're faking it."

Tan truths British beauties are obsessed with achieving a gorgeous glow. Superdrug's research reveals the lengths us ladies go to for self-tanning: • The average female will spend as many as 680 hours applying fake tan during her lifetime. • Almost a quarter (23%) of women confess to having an unhealthy obsession with looking tanned. • More than half (54%) want a noticeable tan like Cheryl Cole or Katie Price. • One in 10 women wouldn't consider going on a night out unless they had applied fake tan. • Of the 1,500 men questioned, 23% confess to using fake tan on occasion.

Tan tactics Know your limits when it comes to your faux glow. Work with your natural complexion to achieve a flurry of "have you been away?" compliments rather than self-tan inquisitions. "From my experience you should only ever aim to go two shades darker than your current natural skin tone," advises Athena Skouvakis, celebrity make-up artist and advisor to Piz Buin. "Opting for darker shades, unfortunately, won't give you the sleek sun-kissed look that we all adore." If a tan's a top priority for you, dedicate time to being a bronzing beauty rather than piling it on as you're flying out of the door: a recipe for a streaky disaster. Skouvakis says: "A key self-tanning rule is to make sure you don't rush the application - never mind how much you want to get out and party! "To avoid messy streaks or an uneven shade, you really must take the time to do it properly. Also remember that less is more and you should always be able to build the colour up."

Maintain mode Keep your fake tan glowing for as long as possible with regular self-tan maintenance. Nobody wants to walk around showing off streaks, patches or premature fading. "For an even tan you need to keep skin sleek, smooth and well hydrated," says Nichola Joss, St Tropez skin finishing expert. Moisturise twice daily to maintain the longevity of your tan and help your tan fade naturally. Despite the misconception that exfoliation will 'shed' a tan, the action of lifting dead cells will keep your colour looking fresh. "Tanning products absorb into several layers of skin - the surface build-up of dead cells is what can make you look dull and orangey," Joss explains. "Gently exfoliate every two or three days; you'll still have a tan coming through, but it's radiant." Amp up the volume of your tan for evenings out with a glossy sheen using a shimmer oil on areas that you want to highlight, like shoulders, collarbone, arms and legs.

SEA BREAM EN PAPILLOTE

Serves 1 Takes 12 minutes

Method Sea Bass Ingredients 1x 140g Sea Bream Fillet ½ Red Pepper 1x Spring Onion 1x 100g Cooked Egg Noodles 4x Sugar Snap Peas 1x Baby Sweetcorn 2x Shitake Mushrooms Chopped Coriander

Soy broth Ingredients 100ml Soy sauce 20ml Fish sauce 200ml Fish Stock Coriander Stalks Lime leaf Ginger 2x Garlic cloves

Combine all the soy broth ingredients and bring to a simmer, remove from the heat, cover with cling film and allow to infuse for one hour. Preheat oven to 250°C. Lay a piece of grease proof paper on the table. Chop all vegetables & place with noodles on the right side of the paper. Place the fish on top of these ingredients. Fold the left side over the top of all the ingredients and fold the bottom and right sides together to form a seal. In to the remaining hole pour the soy broth and seal in the same way as the other two sides. Place on a baking tray and cook for 12 minutes.

This brand new observational documentary series follows the lives of seven dwarf actors as they live together and perform in a production of Snow White. Seven Dwarves offers rounded insight into the personal and professional lives of the dwarves cast together for Woking's New Victoria Theatre pantomime, and aims to cut across some of the preconceptions that small people often encounter. The dwarves also share what life is like as a small person in frank and candid interviews - all with an infectious sense of humour.

In February 1994 Janet Leach, a mother of five from Gloucestershire, was at home making her children’s tea when the phone rang. Janet was on an access course which when completed would enable her to train as a social worker. Janet was also on an approved list of ‘appropriate adults’, volunteers who can be asked by the police to sit in on interviews with minors or vulnerable adults in order to assist them and safeguard their rights. Following the phone call she left the house and arrived at Gloucester police station where she was asked to assist a 52 year old male, Frederick Walter Stephen West. So began the extraordinary and largely unpublicised story of how Janet Leach helped to uncover the crimes of Fred and Rosemary West and establish how many victims the Wests had murdered and where the bodies were hidden.
