12 November 2012 – Diverse Abilities Plus, the Dorset based charity that provides a lifetime of support to children and adults with varying disabilities across the county, is getting into the Christmas spirit by organising a sponsored Santa Fun Run on Sunday 16 December, at Badbury Rings, from 10am. The fun runners will get into the festive cheer by dressing in a Santa suit and running, walking, jogging, or even skipping, one lap (two miles), two laps (four miles) or three laps (six miles) to raise

money for the local charity. Sharon Wells, Events Officer at Diverse Abilities Plus, said: “Anyone can get involved in the Santa Fun Run, no matter what age or ability, and those participating will have a great time as well as raising money for a cause that is vital in Dorset. As the only charity in the area that provides a lifetime of support to children and adults with varying disabilities, fundraising events such as these are crucial in order to maintain the high standard of support that we offer.’ To

enter the Santa Fun Run, a sign up fee of £10 is payable (which includes a FREE Santa Suit for everyone) and participants are asked to raise as much sponsorship money as possible. The first Green Deal service for private rented sector landlords has been agreed by the Residential Landlords Association and Enact Energy The service will give Britain’s 1.4 million private landlords access to Green Deal and the Energy Company Obligation, with a goal of upgrading 10,000 properties over the next five years, in a deal that could be worth £100m. It will be managed on behalf of the RLA by Cornwall-based Enact Energy, who already manage home efficiency services for two of the UK’s largest retailers, Tesco and Marks & Spencer, and have been running similar Green Deal style services for over 100 Local Authorities since 1996. ‘The private rented sector has some of the least energy efficient housing in the UK, and this new service from the RLA will not only help to tackle that, but will also help tenants

to live in warmer, cosier homes’. The RLA service is due to start in early November, initially offering free and grant funded insulation and heating works through ECO, and then expanding to offer Green Deal packages next year. FIVE MINUTES WITH... DANA DELANY Actress Dana Delany, 56, has appeared in many acclaimed films and TV shows over the past few decades, including China Beach and Desperate Housewives. She talks about her current Channel 5 hit, Body Of Proof, and why she turned down the role of Carrie in Sex And The City.

What can viewers look forward to with season two of Body of Proof? Well, I’d say it’s a bit lighter, season two; more comedy. I think that Megan has dealt with some of her issues. She’s closer to her daughter and learning to play with others in the office. It starts out more fun. There’s a new love interest with Jamie Bamber, who’s an Englishman. He was delightful to work with. I met him first on Battlestar Galactica... and he looks really good with his shirt off! And then the end of the season gets more dramatic. There’s more action. Why do you think your character, Megan Hunt, has proved so popular with fans? It’s a combination of she’s really smart, but obviously she’s imperfect for sure, and I think she’s got a fun, snarky sense of humour. Do you share any character traits with her? I’m certainly not as smart as she is; I have a hard time saying all those big words. But I do have a bit of a snarky sense of humour! How was it overseeing autopsies for the role?

I enjoyed doing those autopsies; I loved them. I didn’t know what to expect at first because everyone kept telling me that it would be creepy, but not at all.

It was fascinating. I felt like it was an honour because as the average citizen you don’t really get to see the inside of somebody’s body and basically you’re seeing your own mortality. How do you stay in shape? Mostly just working long hours. Normally I would do yoga every day, but I just can’t with this work schedule, so I’m afraid I’m just getting softer and softer as the season goes on. I was one of those people who was round as a kid, which I think in the end is a blessing because you learn at an early age to watch what you eat, whereas I feel sorry for people who are always thin and now they have to watch it, and they’re not used to it. It’s really hard on them. I’m just used to eating healthy.

and I remember thinking, ‘I hope that doesn’t happen to me’. And, you know, it hasn’t. I’ve kept working, which is really wonderful. Aside from body of proof, what’s been your favourite role over the years? China Beach, because it was the role that sort of put me on the map, and it was such a three-dimensional character. It was really about something important. It spoiled me. I thought, ‘Oh, all the roles will be like this’. It must be fun voicing cartoons such as superman

Was acting always your first love?

Yes, it’s funny because that suits the nerd side of my fans. People come up to me and say, ‘Oh, you’re my favourite Lois Lane!’ But yes, that was a thrill.

It’s what I always wanted to do and I’m really lucky that it worked out because I didn’t really have a back-up plan.

Is it true you turned down the role of carrie in sex and the city?

There seem to be a lot of great roles for women on tv now compared to 20 years ago. Would you agree? I think there are. I never thought that at my age I would be the lead in a series. I remember when I was in my late thirties, an older actress saying to me, ‘I’m warning you. When I turned 40, the scripts just stopped coming’,

Well, you know, there’s been a lot made about that; I’m sort of sorry I said it. There wasn’t even a script yet at that point; it was such an early stage. Darren Starr, who created it, was a friend of mine and he asked me if I’d want to do it. It was just timing. I had just done a bunch of movies about sex, and I said to him, ‘I cannot do anything about sex again’.

TRANSFORM YOUR HOME USING TILES While there are alternatives, tiled floors and walls/splashbacks in bathrooms and kitchens are a smart and practical choice. With so many different tiles on the market, it’s easy to find a look you like and can afford, whether you’re laying the tiles yourself or getting a pro to do it. Tiles come in various shapes and sizes and it’s important to get ones that are in proportion to the size of the room. There are also, of course, lots of different materials to choose from, depending on your taste and budget, as well as the style of the room. Ceramic tiles are a popular and often inexpensive choice. They’re easy to lay and look after, as are glass tiles, which tend to be more expensive but look stunning. The problem with glass tiles is that they’re difficult to cut because they chip easily. Real stone tiles, such as slate, marble and travertine, can be tricky to lay and may have to be sealed (with tile-sealing liquid) before being laid, which can cause problems in itself. They need more aftercare than ceramic and glass tiles and can vary a lot in thickness, colour and texture, so they’re not for everyone. Mosaic tiles are available in all of the above materials, plus metal, and are perfect for creating a feature wall. They come in sheets on a mesh (or paper) and the mesh is supposed to keep the individual tiles evenly spaced, but it doesn’t, in my experience, work very well. To get straight, even grout lines, it’s best to put tile spacers between each tile, which is time-consuming and tedious. Mosaics can also be

hard to keep looking good, depending on where they are and the colour of the grout, because there are so many grout lines. If you’re buying tiles online that you haven’t seen in person, make sure you get a sample first. Of course, the safest option is to buy tiles in store, where you can see what you’re getting. B&Q has really upped its game this season, both in terms of the tiles on offer and the presentation of them, so check out your local store. Another advantage of buying in store is that you can ensure all the tiles come from the same batch (the batch number should be on the box), which minimises differences in colour and finish. To work out the number of tiles required, multiply the length by the height of each wall or part wall to be tiled and add them together to get the total area, plus at least 10% more for breakages, cutting and wastage. A lot of tiles are sold per square metre and even if they’re not, it should say what the price is per square metre - this is the easiest way to work out the cost. Don’t forget to factor in the cost of the tile adhesive and grout, spacers and tools. The adhesive and grout must be suitable for where you’re tiling and the sort of tiles you’re using. Most professional tilers like to use powdered products that are mixed with water, but it can be hard to get the right consistency and to judge how much to mix up, which can lead to wastage. Ready-mixed combined adhesives and grouts produce less waste, but only use them if they’re suitable for the job and you want the grout and adhesive to be the same colour.

HOW-TO TIP One of the hardest parts of tiling is cutting the tiles. There are various methods, but by far the easiest is using an electric tile cutter with a wet-cutting diamond blade, such as the Titan TTB336TCB 500W Tile Saw (£39.99 www.screwfix.com), because you just push the tile through the rotating blade. The great-value Titan is easy to set up and use and has a maximum cutting depth of 20mm, which is sufficient for most tiles. This matt paint dries pretty quickly and can be sprayed on, as well as brushed, which is really handy if you have a lot of wood to cover. When there’s little colour in the garden, this is a brilliant way to add it.

CURRY QUEEN Nearly 30 years after introducing the West to Indian cuisine, Jaffrey reveals her thoughts on the state of Indian and South Asian food in Britain today, how it differs from the rest of the world, and why chicken tikka masala is one of the nation's favourite dishes. As cold, dark nights set in, many of us will soon be reaching for a saucepan and whipping up a curry. And who better to show us how to cook the ultimate in comfort food than Madhur Jaffrey, the authority on Indian cuisine? The 79-year-old is making a welcome return to front her first cookery show on British television for 17 years. In Madhur Jaffrey's Curry Nation, she travels around the UK, meeting Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities and sampling their dishes three decades after she introduced the western world to the food of her birthplace.

found its own niche and character, and it's different from Indian food anywhere else. "If you go to Trinidad, the set of circumstances that brought Indian food there is different from Britain, and the food is different. And if you go to Guyana, Fiji or Singapore, each place has Indian food but it's different." Her fact-finding mission revealed a varied picture from the chips drenched in curry sauce (made from a yellow powder straight out of China) at a chippy in Glasgow, to curry-and-pint nights on Thursdays at pubs across the country, to the smart Cinnamon Kitchen restaurant in London, where chef Vivek Singh combines Indian seasonings with French techniques. But something that stood out to Jaffrey as uniquely British was our need to categorise dishes in terms of heat. "When you go into a restaurant, you know that a chicken vindaloo is going to be very hot and that a chicken korma is not going to be," she says. "That's not the case in India or anywhere else because you can make anything hot or not hot. But in Britain, even a child knows that a korma will be mild." Although some might criticise

the British take on Indian food as inauthentic - chicken tikka masala, for example, often cited as the nation's favourite dish, is thought to have been invented in the UK - she only finds the differences fascinating. Despite having a string of cookery books, shows and cooking sauces to her name, Jaffrey is modest about her own influence on the popularity of curry in Britain. She describes herself as "an actress who cooks" (recent TV credits include New Girl and Law And Order), and says she "just happened to underline a trend that was already there" when her cookery programmes first took off. So why is our love affair with curry such a big deal? "Britain has a very intimate history with India and it goes back several hundred years. Whether it was a good relationship or not it hardly matters. If you are in the same boat together you get adjusted to each other in some way," she says. "And of course it's delicious. It's spicy and it perks you up. And there's lots of it around." Here are some of Jaffrey's dishes for you to try at home...


Recipe

SERVES 6-8

GOAN PRAWN CURRY INGREDIENTS 2tsp olive or sunflower oil

2 x 400ml cans coconut milk

1 medium onion, finely chopped 2tsp tamarind concentrate 1tsp finely chopped garlic

3 small chicken stock cubes

1tsp ground cumin

4tsp caster sugar, or to taste

2tsp chilli powder

750g raw king prawns

1½tsp ground coriander

2 hot green chillies

METHOD Pour the oil into a large non-stick pan or wok, about 25cm in diameter, and set it over a medium heat. Put in the onion and brown for about five minutes. Add the garlic and fry for a further three minutes, then tip in the cumin, chilli powder, coriander and half a teaspoon of salt. Reduce the heat and mix well for one minute. Pour in the coconut milk and spoon in the tamarind concentrate, then crumble in the stock cubes and add the sugar. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Reduce the sauce until it is thick. Mix in the prawns and chillies and cook for two to three minutes until the prawns are just opaque and cooked through, then serve.

MIXED BLACK DAL INGREDIENTS 100g black lentils

2cm peeled root ginger

100g mung beans

3tsp hot green chilli

100g chana dal

60g unsalted butter

100g moth beans

1žtsp salt

2 medium onion

4tsp garam masala

5 garlic cloves, chopped

METHOD The night before rinse all four types of dal and rinse them well then combine them in a heavy-based pan about 25 centimetres in diameter. Pour in 2 litres of water and leave to soak overnight. The next day, place the pan over a high heat and add the onions, ginger, chilli, butter, salt and turmeric. Cover and bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer at a gentle bubble for about two and a half hours, stirring occasionally. Check the seasoning, then add the garam masala, mix thoroughly, cover and continue cooking for 15 minutes, then serve.

After a few months of delayed launches to the service, we visited the clients head office where we gave presentations on what role WDS would play in supporting a new social networking and media backup service to their Operating Companies from around Europe, it turned out I was able to explain our position and put these ‘OpCos’ at ease effectively, so a temporary role was formed for me to act as a business coordinator based within the client’s own organisation where I focussed on process refinement, assisting product management teams and ensuring our WDS Support team was up to speed on the latest changes to products and services. Once this contract came to an end, I moved into a business analyst role where I supported the business with scoping and implementing new support opportunities before finally moving into a project management role earlier this year.

BLUE LIGHT SAFETY TIPS Driver training specialist IAM Drive & Survive has issued safety tips on how to respond when an emergency services vehicle is approaching. Keep your cool – if you see or hear an emergency vehicle approaching, aid concentration by turning off your music, and take a few seconds to plan your next move. Acting in a state of panic could be dangerous and delay the emergency vehicle more. Stop – look for somewhere to pull over and stop if it’s safe to do so, even if the emergency vehicle is on the other side of the road. Indicators can be used to show that you have acknowledged the approaching blue lights and intend to move, but avoid usage if it could confuse other road users. Stay safe – avoid pulling onto kerbs, pavements and verges - verges can mask numerous hazards and mounting the pavement can put pedestrians at risk.

Abide by the law – If you go through a red light or into a bus lane to make way for an emergency vehicle, unless directed to do so by a police officer, you are breaking the law and could be fined, irrespective of your good intentions. Stay alert – be aware that there may be more than one emergency vehicle on the approach. Listen for more than one siren, look all around before moving off, and bear in mind that you may need to move over again. Head of Training Simon Elstow said: “Loud sirens and flashing blue lights cause many motorists to panic, mainly because drivers are not routinely taught how to respond to them. Emergency vehicle drivers want you to help them reach the emergency at hand as quickly as possible. Behave calmly, legally, safely and predictably and move out of the way as soon as it is safe to do so to facilitate their route.”

MINI COUNTRYMAN UPDATE MINI has revised its Countryman model, with detailed refinements to the car’s design and the selection of materials available for the interior. The modifications include newly designed rings encircling the Centre Speedo and four air vents,new door inserts, remodelled door armrests and the controls for the electric windows are now also positioned in the door trim. Moving the window controls away from the centre consolealso optimises access to the larger storage compartment below it. The Countryman will come as standard with a three-seat rear bench, while a pair of individual seats will be available as a no-cost alternative. As well as changes to the range of interior colours, interior trim elements and Colour Lines, the selection of exterior paint finishes have

been refreshed. Customers can choose from six engine variants for the MINI Countryman. The three petrol and three diesel units produce outputs stretching from 90 hp 184 hp. There is also the ultra-sporty MINI John Cooper Works Countryman, powered by a turbocharged 218 hp engine. The ALL4 all-wheel-drive system fitted as standard on this performance variant is also available as an option for the MINI Cooper S Countryman, MINI Cooper SD Countryman and MINI Cooper D Countryman. All models, with the exception of the MINI One D Countryman, can be ordered with a sixspeed automatic gearbox as an alternative to the standard six-speed manual.

Nissan's Qashqai is widely regarded as the benchmark in crossover vehicles and you have to drive one for only a matter of minutes to understand why. The Qashqai is so well designed that you feel immediately at home, as if you have been driving it for years. With excellent seating, commanding view and with all the instruments and switchgear placed for maximum user-friendliness, the car wins you over before you even drive off, writes NICK FLETCHER. Five-seat models start at £16,495 and 7-seat versions are about £1,300 more, with flagship models rising to £28,445. Depending on engine, there are five trim options, Visia, Acenta, N-Tec+, Tekna, and Pure Drive. There are two petrol and three diesel units, one of the diesels a very efficient 1.6 litre, and there are manual or automatic transmissions available as well as choice of 2WD or 4WD. Most buyers opt for 2WD, diesel engine and five seats — and my test model featured all these. It was the 1.6 dci N-Tec+ Stop-Start 2WD Pure Drive model costing £23,090 (4WD adds £1,550). This new 1.6-litre diesel has low CO2 emissions but with 128 hp on tap delivers good performance, with the same amount of torque as a 2.0 litre diesel. Combined fuel consumption is 62.8mpg and I managed around 53 mpg in what I thought was fairly typical usage. This latest Qashqai features Nissan's Around View Monitor - standard on N-Tec+ and Tekna variants. External cameras, provide a bird's eye view of the surroundings to make parking much easier. Standard kit on my test model also included SatNav, power windows and door mirrors, AirCon, audio system with Bluetooth, auto lighting and wipers, on-board computer, cruise control and 18-inch alloys. From the outside, the Qashqai looks smart and classy and the overall size rightly suggests nimble agility and car-like handling. It comes across as a practical and versatile family or business vehicle. It has wide doors for easy access and front and rear seating is very supportive. The boot provides a substantial 410 litres of load space with the rear seats in use, and this can be boosted to a useful 1,513-litres with them folded - though they don't quite fold flat. The big plus point is the car's easy-drive nature. It has excellent ride comfort, good steering feedback, and precise assured handling. It is just very nice to be in and to drive.

The rich shade dominated the international runways, quite literally, as some designers even demonstrated their allegiance to the colour by creating purple catwalks. “Purple is making a welcome return to our wardrobes,” says Veronique Henderson, Colour Me Beautiful’s creative director. “With a colour palette that ranges from damson and aubergine, to lavender and amethyst through to deep plum, there really is a shade that everyone can wear.” Purple doesn’t have to scream ‘Quality Street wrapper’, it’s all about finding the right shade, texture and style for you. Here’s how to pull off purple with aplomb. Daytime damson While purple is perfectly suited to eveningwear, this new ‘It’ colour can work for daylight hours too. For city chic, choose a powerful shade to make an entrance into the office with tailoring. Go for a matchy-matchy skirt or trouser suit if you dare. For a softer look, plump for a textured fabric like tweed. You can also tone the colour down a notch by wearing a white shirt under a purple top or shortsleeved shift dress. Henderson suggests: “If you are feeling creative, combine textures and patterns. Team a chunky purple knit with a floaty dress and a pair of winter boots.”

The truly colour-shy can experiment with accessories for a subtle flash of colour. Add accents of purple with scarves, gloves, shoes, handbag or bold jewellery. Indigo opulence Give your LBD a break for a dose of pure purple glamour. Go to town with statement jewel-like tones like amethyst, indigo and violet. Create a lasting impression by wearing the shade top-to-toe and add embellishment and bling for a modern-day regal look. “The romantics amongst us will love details whether that’s beading, fringing or lace,” Henderson says. “This season, look out for purple dresses with lace overlay and heritage-inspired looks a la Lady Mary of Downton Abbey.” For a glam separate, you can’t go wrong with a purple peplum top or skirt. The combination of punchy colour and extreme flared hem will create drama as well as figure flattery. Try pairing a deep purple with this season’s opulent brocade finishes purple and metallics are a match made in heaven for party season. Veronique Henderson offers her purple tips: -If you have a light colouring, like Uma Thurman or Meryl Streep, periwinkle shades, violet, lavender and bluebell will look amazing. Keep to lighter purple shades and if you want to wear with other colours also mix with light tones. -If you have a deep colouring, like Penelope Cruz or Halle Berry, then damson, fig, aubergine, royal purple and plum are the shades to opt for as they have a greater depth. -If you have a warm colouring, like Christina Hendricks or Tyra Banks with their golden skin tones and auburn hair, stick with the purest purple and mix these with warm tones like oatmeal, lime or amber. 134

SHIELD YOUR SKIN FROM DAMAGE If you want healthy, glowing skin, the best place to start is with a healthy lifestyle and an excellent skin care routine. Nutritious food and adequate sleep are the building blocks for healthy skin. However, there is one often-overlooked factor in skin care that might be affecting the health of your skin—pollution. Healthy skin starts from the inside out, but skin damage can start from the outside in. Smog, dust, dirt, and other particulates in the air pose risks to the skin, your largest organ. Short of staying indoors or donning a biohazard suit, there are steps you can take to shield your skin and reduce the consequences of pollution. Unless you live high in the Himalayan Mountains, you most likely encounter some sort of pollution every day. The diminishing ozone has led to increased exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays and, as a result, increased rates of melanoma. Furthermore, the air is filled with all sorts of pollutants, such as cigarette smoke, car exhaust, smog, dirt, dust, and other particulates. These pollutants increase the levels of free radicals produced by the body. Free radicals are unstable molecules that attack human cells and damage DNA. They lead to aging, tissue damage, and possible disease. Free radicals are everywhere—in the air we breathe, the foods we eat, sunlight, and pollution Pollution is one of the main sources of damage to the skin. Free radicals interfere with the skin’s ability to produce collagen, which keeps it firm and healthy. When contaminants come into contact with your skin, they can interfere with the skin’s ability to regulate moisture, leaving the skin dry, splotchy, wrinkled, and clogged. Think about the dirty film that builds up on your car between washes. That same film is building up on your skin—you just don’t see it. Fats found in Avocados are proven to prevent free radical damage

Pollution is an inevitable fact of life. It’s unlikely that you can avoid it, but you can take steps to shield your skin from its effects. Here’s how: Antioxidants: Antioxidants are substances or nutrients that can prevent or slow oxidative damage to the body. They have been shown to block free radical activity in the body. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants is an excellent line of defence against the damaging effects of pollution. Antioxidants are found in many fruits and vegetables, but most often those that are brightly coloured. Consider including antioxidant-rich foods in your diet such as tomatoes, carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, leafy greens, and more. Water: Stay hydrated to flush toxins through your system and keep your skin (and entire body) healthy. Skin Care Products: Choose skin care products that contain protective ingredients such as vitamins A, C and E. Cleanse: Cleanse your skin thoroughly each day to remove the layer of dirt and grime and prevent buildup and congestion. Sunscreen: The diminishing ozone layer results in increased UV exposure, more sunburns, and higher rates of melanoma. UV exposure increases free radical activity. Protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun and ozone.
