PICK UP A PENGUIN FROM ORIGINAL WALL “Good design is no more expensive than bad,” declared Allen Lane founder of the renowned British brand Penguin Books back in 1935. This sentiment still holds true some seventy years later for Yoka and David Mulley from Original Wall. The interior art company based in Canford Cliffs has taken the classic Penguin book and mounted it in a stylish white, black or oak box frame to add a chic touch of nostalgia to the modern home from just £44.95. Good design has been the focus of the Penguin brand since the very beginning. With its colourcoded bands and logo of a hastily sketched Penguin, the instantly recognisable sleeves that cover the affordable novels have been integral to the brand’s enduring success. As Penguin helped to bring art to a mass audience, it is Original Wall’s intention to bring a bit of character to people’s homes by making a piece of ready-made art accessible to everyone. Yoka explains: “We feel it is very important to effectively hang Penguin paperbacks as art as the beauty of the books can be lost on a bookshelf.” It was while framing their own art that the couple hit on the idea of framing Penguin books and started collecting books from charity shops, car boot sales and online. “It has become a bit of an obsession,” admits David, “After a while you can spot a Penguin Book from 20 paces!” But not all books make the grade; titles that are too obscure, nonsensical or dull are left on the shelf. There is a strict vetting process so only Penguins that are in the right condition are picked to join the exclusive Original Wall collection.

David reveals: “The books need to be distressed but not too distressed. The aging process is very attractive and the fact that the books have survived for so long is astonishing.” Yoka adds: “It is evident that the books have meant a lot for their owners to have kept them for so long. We have one book with an inscription which says; ‘Dear John, I still love you in spite of everything, Merry Christmas!’ ” Both David and Yoka believe it is the personality of the books that makes the brand so special. Shoppers can browse the range of funny, insightful and thought-provoking titles available online at www.originalwall.co.uk. From ‘Man, the Unknown’, ‘Bullets for the Bridegroom’ and David’s personal favourite ‘The Social Life of the Insect World’, it is easy to find the perfect gift. “With repetition the books move away from being just an artefact in a frame and become art,” says David. “One of our customers, a banker in London, selected 36 framed books and displayed them in a grid of six across and six down, creating a very effective feature wall.” With recent news of the merger of Penguin Books with German giant Random House, home to the best-seller Fifty Shades of Grey, the world is questioning the future of the book industry in the face of eBooks. Yoka believes that people will always love a physical book as ‘you can’t sit in the bath with an iPad.’ While David strongly argues that books are killing the planet and admits: “I don’t think I’ve read any of our Penguin collection! DIY EXPERT THIS WEEK: How to transform your home’s woodwork from tatty to terrific by giving it a lick of paint.
BIG AL SAYS: If you’re painting large areas of flat wood, such as doors, a small foam roller will give you the best finish because you won’t get brush marks. The problem with using these rollers is that you don’t get as much paint on the wood as you would with a brush, so try painting it on with a brush and then rollering it out for a smooth finish. To get the best possible finish, lightly sand the wood with fine sandpaper between coats of paint (and wipe clean afterwards). This enables you to remove anything stuck to the dried paint, such as hairs and dirt, and to minimise any runs and brush marks. It also provides a ‘key’ for the next coat of paint, helping it to adhere.

With the festive season coming up, you may be looking for quick and easy ways to make your home smarter and more chic than shabby. Repainting the walls is the obvious answer, but repainting the interior woodwork can make just as much of a difference, especially if it’s seen better days.

If white solvent-based paint has been used on your home’s woodwork, which is usually the case, it will have discoloured over time - sometimes only in a matter of months. Wood paints were traditionally gloss, but these days lower-sheen satinwood and eggshell are more fashionable finishes - shiny woodwork isn’t the done thing any more. As well as specific wood (and metal) paints, you can get multi-surface paints, which are really useful because they can be used on walls and ceilings as well as wood and metal, ideal if you’re painting where a skirting board or doorframe joins the wall, for example. These multi-surface paints are becoming increasingly popular B&Q does a good own-brand one (Colours Everywhere, from £13.98 for 2.5ltr, B&Q) In addition to causing discolouration, solvent-based wood paints have other disadvantages. They often dry slowly so it can take days to do the job, give off fumes, are prone
to runs and drips (although non-drip versions are available) I would always recommend using water-based wood paints. These dry quickly, even at this time of year, the paint goes on more easily than solvent-based alternatives and becomes easier and quicker to apply the more coats you do, so it’s possible to do several coats in a day. You rarely get a run with water-based wood paints, and they’re relatively easy to clean off. . Best of all, white water-based wood paint will stay white for years, long after a solventbased one would have changed colour, so you won’t have to repaint nearly as often. Filler, sandpaper and paint can work wonders with woodwork that seems beyond repair, but if you do have to replace the wood, make sure you seal the knots (with knotting solution) in the new (bare) wood first to ensure that the resin in them doesn’t bleed through and ruin your paintwork. It’s also essential to use wood primer - again, a water-based one is your best bet - on bare wood, or wood primer/ undercoat, which obviously saves you time compared to using separate products. It’s a good idea to apply this to previously painted wood, too, because it helps the topcoat to adhere better, so it should last longer, saving you work in the long run.

COUNTRY STYLE The essence of country style is pared-back decoration, with the emphasis on texture and quality and natural materials. Decor should be simple with painted or tongue-and-groove panelled walls, or wallpaper featuring nature to help set a rustic scene. "Keep clashing patterns to a minimum and instead layer textured soft furnishings, quilts and cushions to give a snuggly feel," says Damian Topping. "Use a large rug, such as a sheepskin, to add warmth on wooden floorboards or hard floors. Add to the air of informality by using, instead of a bedside table, books stacked in a small tower by the bedside. Opt for functional, practical lights and a few well-chosen prints for the walls. Fussy embellishment has no place in these rooms." "A plain decor scheme can be enlivened with a wall of pattern whose colours tie in with the neutral shades on the wall," he says. DEPOSIT PROTECTION GONE MAD! I do believe the positives far out way the negatives since the Deposit Protection Scheme became a legal requirement in April 2006. But I have to question their latest ruling. The case Ayannuga v Swindells, although full details are still to emerge, it appears that the landlord had protected the deposit and served the prescribed information, but did not include the scheme’s leaflet which formed part of the prescribed information. The landlord argues that the leaflet was generally available on the scheme’s website for the tenant to find, and whilst the initial judge accepted this argument, the Court of Appeal did not. The court awarded the tenant the full penalty of three times the amount of the deposit, the landlord had to return the deposit in full and will most likely be ordered to pay all the tenants legal costs.
I am astounded at this result! The whole reason for protecting a tenants deposit is to stop unfair landlords or agents deducting unnecessary costs/expenses or retaining deposits for no reason. With this case the Landlord had done the right thing and protected the deposit, what he failed to do was give a leaflet to the tenant. The fine is totally unjustified and wrong. The tenants’ rights had not been affected, how did they come to this ruling? So, take heed all ye landlords out there, and remember the following rules;
Protect a tenant’s deposit in one of the three government approved schemes within 30 days of receiving the money. Issue the tenant and any relevant person (e.g. someone who has paid the deposit on behalf of the tenant) with the following documents -A completed copy of the Prescribed Information, including any scheme leaflet - A copy of the tenancy deposit protection certificate If you have forgotten or didn’t realise the new rules from April 2012 must include the leaflet I would suggest you send it now!

MEAT THE EXPERTS Meat-eaters know how great it tastes on a plate, but how many of us know our way around a cow or a lamb? House gets to know the cuts during a crash course in butchery, and picks up some tips from reallife butcher (and one half of TV’s Fabulous Baker Brothers) Henry Herbert. Plus, some tasty meat recipes. You don’t expect to walk into your local butcher’s shop and see a glamorous TV star behind the counter. But Henry Herbert, one half of Channel 4’s Fabulous Baker Brothers, is juggling his TV career with running family business Hobbs House Butchery in Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire. And he has seen such a rise in people who want to learn some basic butchery skills that he’s in the process of opening a school to teach them. “There’s a thirst for people wanting to learn how to do it themselves,” he says. “They might not do it every time, but understanding the skill behind it helps you appreciate what the trade involves. It’s like when people want to do a bit of DIY at home but won’t necessarily do the whole house. “If you cook a leg of lamb that you had boned out yourself, there’s kudos in that.” There can also be financial benefits to getting handy with a knife at home. Herbert says: “A small chicken is about £5. It’s about the same price as two skinless chicken breasts, but there’s quite a big difference in size. “It’s so quick to learn how to chop that chicken up and get two breasts, two legs, wings and a carcass to make a soup, so suddenly you’ve gone from two meals to five meals. I could teach someone that in five minutes and they’ve got that for life.” Even if home butchery is not your thing, the star is supporting a campaign to encourage people to use their local butcher and tap into their expert knowledge about which cuts to buy and how to use them. After all, trained chef Herbert took over his family butcher’s in the first place to help keep the trade alive when the shop became vacant. The number of butcher shops in Britain has declined sharply since the Seventies, dropping from 25,300 in 1977 to just 6,811 in 2006. However, according to Eblex, which represents the English beef and sheep industry, the drop in numbers is tailing off and there are around 6,600 today. “I felt it was a real shame to see another butcher shop that had been trading for 150 years close down and become a card shop or a charity shop,” he says. “I thought even if I can breathe some new life into it and help inspire someone at least I’ve done something rather than watch it shut down.”
A butcher’s at how it’s done I admit it, I love red meat. But I don’t think I’m alone in being a bit clueless about how a juicy sirloin steak or comforting Sunday roast correspond to the animals they start out as. With this in mind, I take a trip to the Donald Russell butchery in Aberdeenshire, proud holder of a Royal Warrant, for a tour of the premises and a crash course in butchery skills. Led by the aptly-named Steve Lamb, I wander through the ice-cold maturation room, where hundreds of headless carcasses hang side by side. Beef is typically hung for around 28 days to give it maximum flavour, and lamb, which I learn is anatomically very similar to a cow, is hung for up to 10 days. Throughout the factory are a staggering number of white-coated people hard at work, some carefully weighing and portioning the steaks, others chucking meat into a mincer, lining pastry with sausage meat or packing up the cuts. They all carry out their tasks with impressive speed and precision. And then it’s my turn. In the demonstration room, I watch as butcher Dave Bergin uses a saw and various knives to break down the ‘roasting’ (a side of beef) into the four main cuts of rib, sirloin, fillet and rump. It is quite a transformation, and what starts out as a generous, multi-coloured bit of fillet, for example, is trimmed down into a sleek piece of pure red meat that resembles a fish to look at. Next is the fun part. With my left hand encased in a chainmail glove, I have a go at cutting these newly-butchered slabs into steaks. It’s satisfying to sink the knife in, but my task - to chop them to an optimum 220 grams - is not easy, and I keep missing the mark. Fellow butcher Andy Grant, on the other hand, gets it right every time. There’s also a baffling array of words to come to terms with. As well as the familiar steaks, I hear terms like “pave”, “picanha” and “tafelspitz” bandied about. More confusingly, some are different words for the same thing, but the butchers navigate the language with ease. Despite a growing interest from the public in butchery, the team at Donald Russell tell me that they have struggled to find young apprentices to go into the trade. “Nobody wants to get up at 4.30am to come to a cold factory and cut up steaks,” admits Grant, who has done the job for 20 years. “But it’s given me a good life. It’s a job I feel passionate about and I enjoy it.” Impressed as I am by his skills though, I think I’ll leave him to it.

SERVES 4
SLOW-COOKED BEEF WITH GNOCCHI INGREDIENTS 450g lean boneless shin or chuck steak, cut into 2.5cm cubes 2 large garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped or crushed Salt and freshly milled black pepper 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes ½tsp cayenne pepper 1tsp paprika
200ml good, hot vegetable stock
2tbsp sunflower oil
1 cinnamon stick, halved
1 large onion
1tbsp light brown sugar
METHOD Place the beef in a large plastic food bag. Add the seasoning, cayenne and paprika; seal, shake well to coat the beef in the spices.Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Cook the beef for 4-5 minutes in batches until brown on all sides. Transfer to a 1.7l/3pint heatproof casserole pot.In the same frying pan, cook the onion and garlic for 2-3 minutes. Spoon into the casserole pot. Add the tomatoes and stock, cinnamon, sugar and tomato puree. Bring this to the boil, reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 2-2½ hours. Add the gnocchi 10 minutes before the end of the cooking time. Garnish with the parsley and serve with crusty bread.

SLOW-COOKED SHOULDER OF LAMB INGREDIENTS 1 whole shoulder of lamb (1.75kg) 2tsp olive oil 20g butter 250g mushrooms 1 onion (chopped) 4 cloves of garlic (sliced)
2 sprigs fresh rosemary 6 sprigs fresh or dried lavender 5 tomatoes (cut into wedges) 125ml white wine 250ml chicken or beef stock
METHOD Allow the meat to come to room temperature. Preheat the oven to 140°C/285°F/Gas 1. Season the lamb shoulder with salt and pepper. Preheat a large, flame-proof braising pan. Add oil and butter and brown the meat on all sides until nicely caramelized. Remove the meat from the pan and leave to the side. Add mushrooms, onions and garlic and braise for 5-8 minutes. Return the meat to the pan. Add all the remaining ingredients to the pan and bring to the boil. Cover with the lid and place into the oven and cook for 2½ - 3 hours. After 2½ hours test the meat. It should be tender and sticky. When the meat is tender remove the pan from oven. Place the lamb on a warm serving platter and allow to rest for up to 20 minutes. Remove the remaining pan ingredients and arrange around the meat for a nice presentation. Use the delicious juices to make a gravy. To serve carve the meat straight from the bone and arrange on preheated plates. Serve with green beans and potato gratin. 126

VOLVO XC60 Volvo's classy crossover the XC60 is available in 26 different versions, so potential buyers can easily customise the model to their own particular requirements. The XC60 impresses at the outset, with smart kerb-appeal, great versatility, excellent driving feel and so many safety features you feel you might be on the space shuttle, writes NICK FLETCHER. There are two five-cylinder diesel engines available, D4 and D5, with the former coming with the option of two and four wheel drive. It is smooth, responsive and feels more stable than some rivals because the extra body roll which comes with taller 4WD models is on the Volvo well-controlled and minimised. The 2.4 litre diesel unit in my D4 SE Lux model offers 163 hp, gives a top speed of 118 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 10.4 seconds. The combined fuel figure is 41.5mpg and in mixed driving I got close - 37mpg. At the kerb the XC60 looks smart and elegant, but with a robust persona and when you get inside, the good feelings continue. The cabin is beautifully designed and laid out even in lower-
range versions, and my test model had a special luxury interior ( £2,550 extra!) which was just superb. Standard kit includes twin front and side airbags, window airbags, and Volvo’s City Safety system. At 20mph or less, sensors tell if you're likely to hit the car in front and activate a warning buzzer. If you don’t act quickly, it will brake for you. However, with all the kit switched on, there are sometimes so many lights and sounds you can sometimes feel you are in fairground and frankly, too many such devices can be counterproductive because they can be distracting. The test version also featured a superb Geartronic automatic gearbox, glass sunroof, luxury interior pack, rear parking camera, security and driver support packs, sat-nav, upgraded sound system with DAB radio, and much more. This took the price from £33,845 to £45,860. With responsive driving, roomy interior, great comfort, immaculate build quality and all that safety kit, this Volvo is almost impossible to fault.

The all-alloy 16-valve 1.3-litre engine featuresvariable valve timing, and offders 85 hp.Combined fuel figure for the manual version is 39.8 mpg, with emissions of 162g/km. The auto version returns 38.7 mph and 167g/km.
Over 1,000 Ford B-MAX models have already been delivered to UK customers, and more than 2,500 orders have been received, the company has announced. The new Ford B-MAX offers "a unique and ingenious door system" which integrates the traditional central “B” pillar structure into the rear doors, creating an opening more than 1.5 metres wide when the hinged front doors and rear sliding doors are opened. Technology features on the Ford B-MAX include SYNC, Ford’s voice-activated, in-car connectivity system which enables users to connect mobile phones and music players by Bluetooth or USB, make hands-free telephone calls, and control music using voice controls, and offers the new Emergency Assistance feature designed to call a local emergency
THE NEW 1.0-LITRE ECOBOOST PETROL ENGINE, NAMED “INTERNATIONAL ENGINE OF THE YEAR 2012” services operator in the event of an accident. The Ford B-MAX is equipped with a choice of powertrains. The new 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, named “International Engine of the Year 2012” and most recently awarded the Dewar Trophy, is available with both 100 and 120hp power outputs.
