NEWS GET YOUR GARDEN READY NOW FOR A DISPLAY OF SPRING COLOUR WITH HASKINS GARDEN CENTRES The latest news stories in your area.
Haskins is encouraging gardeners to plan ahead for next year and has created a bulb planter guide to add a burst of colour after the dull autumn and winter months. Alasdair Urquhart, plant advisor at Haskins Garden Centre in Ferndown, commented: “Gardening requires patience, especially when it comes to planting bulbs in the autumn ready for a display of bright colours in the spring.
PROPERTIES WANTED IN RINGWOOD! The lack of quality rental properties on the market at present coupled with the sustained high levels of demand are keeping prices relatively high. Chris Smith, Lettings Manager ‘The trend so far this year has been a demand for two and three bedroom family homes that are pet friendly and for high end one and two bedroom flats.’ Many applicants are searching for stable long term lets with applicants considering signing for longer initial term lets. If you have a property, which you are considering letting out or would like a free no obligation market appraisal, please do not hesitate to contact the Letting Manager Chris Smith on: 01425 470283 or by email chris.smith@goadsby.com
“At Haskins, we have a vast selection of over 300 varieties of bulbs, including Daffodil, Tulip, Snowdrop and plenty more. We recommend using the lasagne bulb technique to ensure you get the most out of your planter.”
4. Cover the Daffodils with compost and plant a layer of Scilla evenly across the pot, producing a layered effect 5. Finish off by adding more compost above the second layer of bulbs. Water the pot to allow the soil to settle Haskins is due to hold a Bulb Festival throughout autumn, to help customers learn how to plant bulbs and achieve a blooming garden for spring. Staff will be available to help customers choose a colour scheme and create a riot of colour, no matter the size of garden. Haskins has centres in Ferndown in Dorset, West End in Southampton and Roundstone and Snowhill in West Sussex. For more information visit www.haskins.co.uk
Here are some tips from Haskins on how to create colourful spring planters. Yellow Daffodil & Blue Scilla Planter: 1. Purchase ‘Jetfire’ Daffodil to contrast against the blue ‘Scilla Siberica’ bulbs 2. Choose a wide, shallow pot and cover the drainage holes in the pot to prevent the soil from leaking out 3. Add a layer of bulb compost to the pot and arrange the Daffodils first. Daffodils should be planted pointy end up
TREKKERS CONQUER DORSET 3 PEAKS This month 11 supporters of Diverse Abilities, the local disability charity, took on and conquered the three highest peaks in Dorset walking a marathon distance of 26.2 miles in 14 hours, as part of the charity’s Dorset Big Foot Trek Series. The route, along the famous Wessex Ridgeway, included an ascent up Lewesdon Hill, Pilsdon Pen and Bulbarrow Hill accumulating a combined height of over 1350ft – more than the ascent of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain! The participants that signed up for the challenge were supporting and raising funds for children and adults with disabilities that the local charity supports. The group have raised over
£1,500 between them, with more money due to come in, which can pay for three 24-hour breaks at our respite home for a child with incredibly profound disabilities, who requires someone to be awake with them 24 hours a day. This is a lifeline for mum and dad, giving them respite and a vital night’s sleep. Diverse Abilities will be announcing its next walking challenge as part of the Dorset Big Foot Trek Series in the coming months. If you are interested in finding out more, get in touch by calling 01202 718266 or emailing fundraising@diverseabilities.org.uk For further information regarding Diverse Abilities please visit www. diverseabilities.org.uk

NEWS
GETTING BACK IN THE GAME Sports knee injuries may cause pain with instability and loss or function but there is no reason to hang up your boots for good, explains Mr Adrian Harvey, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and knee specialist at Nuffield Health Bournemouth. “A number of knee injuries including ACL, meniscal and cartilage injuries occur in sports like rugby and football where there is player contact and resultant force on the knee. Cyclists and runners are less at risk, due to the nature of their exercise. “Alternatively a patient may present with a knee that is insecure or unstable and gives way. When questioned, patients can recall a memorable injury but the swelling has gone down and the knee is not necessarily painful but gives way when practising sports which involve directional change or twisting.
THE VICTOR (SO TO SPEAK) IS HOUSE! When it comes to horse racing in ones tighty whities whom else would we submit as our champion other than a ‘Stallion’. Earlier this year, as part of an annual challenge series, Ross Stallion (our sales director) challenged CEO of Saxe Couburge and Lovett International, ‘Maxamillian De Kemet’, to a horse race to the death – by which, I mean death of embarrassment, as both riders would only be allowed the modesty of their underwear, riding boots and safety helmet. The race was a classic ‘best out of three’. The horses were matched perfectly in strength, agility and proven ability, but that didn’t reassure our defender Ross, who only then confessed he hadn’t ridden a horse in over 13 years. It was a windy day – the icy breeze sent shivers down the two competitors spine and the sight of them in their undergarments sent one down all of ours
too. The Reverend (yes a real one) made his blessings over the two riders, reminding us of the potential peril that lay ahead. Despite the poor weather conditions our guys mounted their horses, clutched the reins and off they went. The first lap was Ross’, pulling in just ahead of Max. The second a nail-biting draw, so it was all on our final lap to produce a victor. A look of determination glazed over their eyes; at least we think it was determination. Our flagman took central position at the start line and as the flag fell our riders burst into action. Despite both horses wavering a little, it was Ross Stallion who rode back to us a winner. It really was a fantastic day and everyone that was involved, especially Max, were all great sports. This win, makes the current tally 1-1 in our annual contest. What will next years be? Well, we have no idea – but suggestions are welcome!
“It is very important that a correct diagnosis is made. The patient should see a specialist to undertake investigations, as many knee injuries do not occur in isolation and can be associated with a meniscal (cartilage) tear or concurrent injury to another knee ligament. “Although we can treat some injuries non-operatively, this decision should be made on an individual patient basis, taking into account a number of factors, including sporting aspirations and the potential instability of the knee.” For an appointment at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital call the Nuffield team on 01202 375032. LOVE ME TENDER Quay Living is pleased to confirm the sale by tender of Flat 19, Stretton Court, Ashley Cross. As Sales Manager, James Buller points out, “not all sales are best served by traditional private treaty. Stretton Court was one such property – it was in need of complete refurbishment, but offered good potential in a great location. The vendor needed to sell the property quickly to cover care fees, so speed and certainty were essential. We advised our client to pursue a sale by informal tender, which maximizes market exposure in a defined timescale.” Quay Living brought the property to the market seeking offers in excess of £150,000. It conducted 22 viewings
over three open days, and received a total of 9 bids from a wide variety of potential buyers, from first-time buyers to seasoned property traders. The tender process took just 28 days from sale instruction to offer acceptance, and the successful bidder paid more than £30,000 over the guide price. Says James, “our client was very pleased that we achieved such an outstanding result for him in such a short timescale. It just goes to show what can be achieved by other sales methods, and Quay have experience in offering both tender and auction sales”. Quay is happy to advise prospective clients how best to market their properties and James can be contacted on 01202 683444.
CASH FOR KIDS GRANT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, is delighted to have received a grant of £2,135 from Wave 105 Cash for Kids for its children’s service - Coping with CHAOS. The grant will help fund play sessions for children with disabilities and their siblings during the school holidays. Activities will include trips to the cinema, sessions with Crazy Creatures, going swimming and trampolining, and much more. The sessions provide lots of opportunities for social interaction, and play is a great way for children and young people to explore the world around them. It allows them to learn and develop in a safe environment with trained staff. A parent, whose child attends the charity’s play sessions, said: “I can’t quite express how important these sessions are. The kids are well supported to be safe, enjoy themselves, try new things and build relationships. Us parents can relax and have a chat to others - who understand where we are coming from. A memory I will never forget is during a swimming session. I saw my son come down the water slide for the first time ever... he was so proud of himself! Thank you so much Cash for Kids we really appreciate your help.” To find out more regarding Diverse Abilities and how they could support you, visit www.diverseabilities. org.uk/children

ASK THE INTERIOR DESIGN EXPERT...
2018 COLOURS: THE PREDICTIONS Katie Thomas, Design Director, KTM Design As we are now in the latter half of 2017 (not entirely sure how that happened), interior design trend forecasting and predictions for 2018 is well underway. Colour sets the tone for what decor people invest in, what furniture they opt for, and the overall mood for design that year. If you are embarking on a head-to-toe makeover, the first step is to create a colour palette. Decide on a basic colour scheme for the whole property and then take that from room to room. In 2016 it was all about white, then in 2017 we saw a shift to darker neutrals like taupe and warm greys. It has been predicted that 2018 will see deeper and bolder colours taking centre stage. Several top paint companies have named some statement-making dark colours their new ‘it’ shade. From blacks with deep tones of indigo to chalkboard-like shades that look softer than expected when seen on walls and the floor, 2018’s predictions encourage a ‘less is more’ approach to decorating. Combine this colour with light furnishings, natural wood and white accessories. Don’t panic colour-lovers, you won’t only see dark hues on walls next year. Bright colour palettes of blue, fuchsia, green and high-definition yellow will bring lots of surprising combinations that are guaranteed to bring fun and happiness into any room. These intense colours are complemented by iridescent tones of turquoise and hot pink, white and frosted almond. If you are looking to make a great first impression from the outside of your home, give your front door a face lift with a sunny yellow, dove grey or true red if you are feeling bold. If you are thinking about making changes to your home or commercial space in the upcoming months and could benefit from some expert advice, get in touch.

Thinking of buying property for use as an ‘Airbnb’ Holiday let? Make sure you check the lease beforehand! The demand for short term lets, days and weeks rather than months, is on the rise thanks to the success of websites such as Airbnb, whose services provide an online platform to allow individuals to rent out their homes, rooms or apartments to visitors at short notice and for only a few days at a time. As a result, we have seen an increase in clients wanting to purchase additional property for the sole purpose of short term lettings.
The lease should be carefully checked by your Solicitor before further costs of a purchase transaction are incurred or a dispute with neighbours or freeholders arises. If you are looking to purchase a leasehold property that you may wish to let out in the future or would like us to review the clauses in a lease that you already own please contact:
If you are thinking of purchasing or using your existing leasehold property for this purpose, it is important to check the terms of the lease. Often, leases will clearly state that any short term renting or holiday letting is not allowed, however often the lease may be ambiguous on this subject. The rise of short term lettings has resulted in the Courts presiding over a number of recent disputes where the wording of the lease is ambiguous and in a recent case it was decided that the owner had breached the lease by letting his property out on a short term let. The Court made it clear that the decision was reached on the particular wording of the particular clause of the lease. Most leases have subtle differences in their terms and so you should be particularly cautious when purchasing or using a leasehold property for the purpose of short term holiday letting.

TALKING BUSINESS
FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT Help your guests to get their rose tinted spectacles on by carefully managing their arrival In the distant past when I was slim with hair I was the UK manager for a software company and spent a lot of time travelling in Britain and Europe. I became a fan of Marriott hotels and stayed in them when I could, the standards and staff attitude just seemed to be right and somehow I always felt welcome when I arrived. On one visit there was a book by JW Marriott in the room which spelled out the philosophy of the business including one thing that really stuck in my mind- the idea of the vital first five minutes. If you arrive at a Marriott and there’s a long queue at reception there’s a sort of panic button that they press under the desk. This brings staff from other parts of the hotel who will take you to a table and sit you down with a coffee whilst they organise your check in and bring your room keys to you. Gradually a magical change takes place- the reception area sparkles, the piped music is pleasant and when you get to your room it is more spacious than expected and the furnishings are beautiful. During this time of intense work I took time out by performing as an
amateur comedian and encountered a phenomenon that was also a great lesson- you could say exactly the same words on two consecutive nights, get an ovation for one performance and face the agony of silence 24 hours later. Something was subtly different for the audience which completely changed their experience. We manage many holiday homes right by the beach in fantastic locations but the property itself may be dated. We do what we can but they can never be perfect and this is where you can get consecutive guests saying that it’s the best & worst property they ever stayed in. The property hasn’t changed, it’s simply a matter of perception and the vital first five minutes after arrival is when you have the opportunity to steer your customers to focus on the good things or the bad. The best way to approach this is to assume that people are going to arrive tired, stressed and possibly a bit annoyed. I’ve been there many times - I promise to finish work at 12.30 so we can get away and arrive in time to unpack and take a stroll before picking a restaurant for a first night
dinner. What actually happens is I get home at 2.30, I haven’t packed and I’m interrupted by 3 more calls, I just need to send two emails and we hit the road at 3.30 ensuring that we catch the traffic. Now we have to stop on the way down, pay too much for some poor food and arrive in the dark- the stage is set for a bad experience. As my wife gets the accommodation details out (or tries to read them on her phone as I forgot to print them) I grip the steering with white knuckles praying that I didn’t cheap out too much on the accommodation and try to remember if there was proper central heating or parking. Applying the ‘Vital first five minutes’ rule to a holiday home: • Make sure that you give clear directions to the property and that the full address and postcode are on the confirmation. • If you don’t have parking then include precise instructions for where to stop and unload and where to park. • Key collection needs to be simple or if you use a keysafe make sure it is lit by an outside light. • It’s vital that the property is warm and leave a light on.
• A welcome pack is now expected but it’s still better for it to be a ‘surprise’ rather than advertised. • Local jam or scones that could be home baked (take them out of the packet) all help with the mindset and for many a bottle of wine will make all the difference. • Provide essential items to get the customers started - loo rolls, washing up liquid, cloths, dishwasher tablets etc • If you have a woodburner or open fire leave a basket of logs, kindling & matches. The other critical area is how you respond to a problem. Someone needs to be available when the guest calls and if they call the agency rather than the caretaker as they often do they need to be looked after rather than just told they have called the wrong number. Keep them up to date on progress to resolve an issue and call to check things are OK afterwards. All of this costs very little and will help ensure a happy experience for your guests so they things in the most positive light possible.

HOME IMPROVEMENTS
BROADVIEW Bespoke Shading Solutions
Brief Broadview were commissioned to design a bespoke solution for our clients stunning traditional orangery. The client’s main requirement was to reduce heat in order to extend usage of this otherwise redundant room during sunny weather. Being a main feature of both the house and garden, seamlessly connecting the two together creating a synergy between inside and outside relied heavily on being able to fully enjoy this connecting space in all weathers. Our client was also extremely particular about the aesthetics of the solution harmoniously blending in with the style of their home, preferring natural materials in neutral tones.
58
Solution Broadview came up with a solution that matched our client’s specification perfectly, whilst also ensuring their individually selected furniture was protected from harmful UV rays. French Pinoleum natural wood blinds from Ballauff of Paris, add a simple yet effective touch of elegance with their delicate veins of woven wood running on discreet but tough Teflon wires. All blinds were installed fully motorised with market leading Somfy motors for ease of use. This traditional style of blind was fitted in both the Orangery roof and all the side elevations, flawlessly bringing a garden feel to the interior of the connecting space. French Pinoleum are ideal for filtering and softening sunlight without taking it away completely. The timber is of coursed procured from a sustainable source.
HOME IMPROVEMENTS
Result Undeniable elegance graces this now fully utilised garden room. With the roof blinds down and the sides retracted, our client can enjoy views of the garden, whilst feeling part of it on any day they choose. The sunlight subtly filters through the natural wood creating that feeling of harmony between home and garden that our client so desired. With one touch of a button, the room can transform from glass to wood in a matter of minutes. career. This particular farm was later purchased by Barton-On-Sea Golf Club, and houses Stroller in his final resting place.
With demolition nearly complete, the construction of just 8 bespoke apartments is underway. These homes will be completed to the highest specification and finish; this married with the enviable views they’ll boast is already making these apartments sought after, with current enquiries being taken.
These homes which are in walking distance of several bars and restaurants situated along the coastal road running between Barton and New Milton, will be ready for occupation Summer 2018.
Through a gated entrance, this development comprises a mix of sizeable, two and three bedroom apartments, with spacious living accommodation, balconies, an internal elevator, private parking and landscaped garden areas. The Development Name ‘Strollers Reach’ has been derived from the famous pony Stroller, who was the first and only, Olympic medal-winning, Show Jumping Pony, and is now laid to rest at the Barton-On-Sea Golf Club which this prestigious development overlooks. ASK THE EXPERT ABOUT...
CONSIDERING EQUITY RELEASE? Emma Crowley from Bruce Lance In the second of a two-part series on Equity Release, Emma Crowley from Bruce Lance solicitors in Poole explains the home reversion option. There are two routes to Equity Release: one is to take out a lifetime mortgage, as discussed in my last article, and the other is home reversion, which involves selling your home (or part of it) to a provider. If you take this option, you will be permitted to live in the property for the rest of your life but you will no longer own it. You can accept payment in a lump sum or smaller regular payments. As with a lifetime mortgage, you are free to move house, as long as the new property is suitable security for the provider’s loan. It is also possible to ring-fence a percentage of the equity in the property so that it can be passed on to your family after you die. Home reversion has a “no negative equity guarantee”, which means that if, after all expenses are settled, the property is worth less than the sum offered by the provider, they cannot call on the balance of the estate for the difference. A number of providers will insist that you are at least 60 years of age before accepting your application. You will also be responsible for maintaining and insuring the building, and your provider can inspect the property in accordance with the terms of the contract you enter into. A disadvantage of the home reversion option is that you will normally receive only 20% to 60% of the value of your home. You are therefore losing out considerably, compared with what you would receive if the property were sold on the open market, and there would be significantly less to pass on by way of inheritance to family members. When the home reversion comes to an end, the property will be sold and the proceeds split in accordance with the proportions of ownership. If, for example, you have sold 50% of the property to a provider and ring-fenced the remaining 50%, then the proceeds will be split equally. If you are considering Equity Release, you should always take independent financial and legal advice. If you would like further information on Equity Release or any residential conveyancing matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Emma Crowley is a residential conveyancing executive at Bruce Lance in Poole. You can contact her on 01202 679379 or at www.brucelance.co.uk

BUZZY CLEANERS ON…
DEEP CLEANING When we have an end of tenancy or deep clean booked in clients ask for carpets to be cleaned and oven cleaning as well so the property is clean and at a high standard to rent or sell. Moving house? Whether your selling or simply coming to the end of tenancy, there’s always one task we tend to overlook; the cleaning. When it comes to moving, it’s important that the property you were living in is left to a high standard for the new folks; but in the midst of a busy time when are you going to get it done? Well if you’re too busy? Think Buzzy! We are an all inclusive service, with the help of our partners at ‘Ecoven’ and ‘No.1 Carpet Cleaning’. With these two new partners, we can get your ovens looking brand new and your carpets as good as too. We work closely with ‘Number 1 Carpet Cleaning’ and with the assistance of their high-quality equipment we can bring carpets up looking brand new. Like us, Ecoven (a local oven cleaning company) only use non-toxic, ecofriendly products, which makes
cleaning safer for our client’s homes and for the environment. If you’re in rented accommodation you will have paid a deposit when you first moved it. Well, the estate agent holds that deposit until the property is at its highest spec for new clients to move in to, this is where we come in. We’ll scrub your place top to bottom to ensure that you get that hard earned deposit back. What’s our process? Firstly view the property Quote the client on an hourly rate Book the job in with a team of cleaners We blitz the property wall to wall All light fittings All woodwork All floors All rooms All inside windows All inside drawers and cupboards Nothing is left un-turned We even wash and dry upholstery, including curtains – you’d be amazed at just how much difference that can make and the smell is amazing!
Clients want to be guaranteed a good service at this stressful time, happy knowing that everything is organised for them and it makes us feel great to think we can really make a difference during this time. We supply everything, all products and materials, all you have to do is arrange the time and place.

STAYCATION
PARADISE AT HOME In an effort to seek some R&R, I sat down with my significant other to discuss the possibility of a holiday. Like most, we have put in the graft, working day and night to pay for all of life’s little joys; the mortgage, bills, my princess of a dog’s specific dietary needs…we, like many, were in need of a break. So one night we sat together and explored website after website, each suggesting ideas and quickly dismissing them. Arguments breaking out over flight durations, destinations and how this whole holiday finding process was actually a reflection of a deep routed inability to commit (sorry, it got personal). The point is, sometimes booking a relaxing escape abroad is one of the most stressful experiences. Then it occurred to me, why am I so desperate to escape a part of the world that tons of holidaymakers would die to visit? Our neighbouring county Cornwall is widely regarding as one of the most beautiful parts of the country, offering breathtaking views, art, renowned
culinary haunts and some of the world’s most beautiful beaches – light bulb alert. It hit me, why don’t we swap our vacay, for a staycay? So, we decided to turn to the awesome team at ‘Beachspoke’ – luxury holiday home specialists – who helped us snag a stunning rental, located in the charming Cornish village of ‘Mousehole’. We arrived in Cornwall, a pinch weary from our 4-hour car journey, which by all standards was far more pleasurable (and scenic) than the less than alluring sight of the M3 on route to Gatwick. After a quick pit stop in Penzanse, where we stocked up on all the essentials – aka pasties, clotted cream and cider – we headed for our crashpad in Mousehole. After a blazing trail through winding country roads and narrow village streets we had arrived. We pulled up in the world’s most scenic car park, adjacent to the twinkling waterfront and headed towards the ‘Harbour Moon’ cottage.
Prior to our visit Olivia (our staycation guru/Beachspoke tour guide) had given us the code to a tiny security box that would unlock the key to the door. We guided the key into the lock and pushed open the door – deep breath – and WOW.

I stepped down into the kitchen come sitting room. Every inch of the space was adorned with style. The matte marble-esque worktops with chrome trimmings, the exposed stonewall, the driftwood sculptures; everything was gorgeous. Our exploration was heightened as we climbed the nautical rope-aided stairwell, only to discover the stunning boudoir above. We crept in, taking in every nook and cranny. To the left, bronze-flecked tiles flowed seemly from floor to wall, creating a contemporary wet-room, complete with walk in shower and a copper basin. White fluffy robes hung up tied with a bow, set the tone for what was to be a truly lavish layover. We continued into the room our excitement growing. A grand bed took pride and place centralised in the latter part of the room, it’s headboard the divide between bathroom and bedroom. I looked up to discover fishing nets woven between the

Another day of adventure concluded and we began our usual holiday ritual of changing for the evening affair. Tonight we decided to visit the famous ‘2 Fore Street’. Owner and operator Joe (who actually took our booking that morning) served some of the best food I have ever had. The quality, flavour and evident passion spoke through the food and the service from their fantastic team heightening an already incredible experience. We returned to our pad for the last time. In an effort to savour as much of this wonderful property as we could, we perched in the living room enjoying the fresh scones and raspberry conserve we had picked up earlier that day. As our eyes grew heavy we decided to tuck ourselves into our opulent marshmallow bed once more. What a trip. Beachspoke have opened my eyes to a new kind of travel accommodation and a truly luxurious experience, all only hours away. Our property, ‘Harbour Moon’, is one of eight luxury properties in and around Cornwall, Devon and Cotswold that Beachspoke manage. white beams with a large copper pendant light suspended over the divan. A beam of light crept over the bed, inviting us to the furthest part of the room. I went to open the curtains before being distracted by the glass floor below me that looked out onto the living space below. The natural light coming from the open window below reminded me of the magnificence of seaside living. Finally I crept towards the rustic café-style shutters and pulled them apart, revealing the picturesque harbour view that had been hiding behind it. It was breathtaking. Excited to explore the town we threw on some fresh clothes and hit up the local haunts. Based on the recommendations in our Harbour Moon guidebook, we decided to pay a visit to the ‘Old Coastguard’, a popular restaurant on the cliff top overlooking the sea. To get to the restaurant, we strolled along the rockery and climbed a stone stairwell that disclosed a beautiful garden. We crept in through the double doors and snagged a table. The meal was delicious, complete with local gins and fresh seafood. Feeling full and fully inebriated we
made our way back to the cottage to enjoy our first night in that enormous bed – lights out. We awoke in the sun-filled room ready for a day of exploration, though the feeling of duck-feather pillows and a sumptuous mattress made it hard to actually leave. Adam – my partner whom I mentioned in the beginning – true to his heroic nature, gathered breakfast supplies (from the quaint local post office I might add). I tore myself away from bed and headed to the first place anyone on holiday goes: the fridge. I opened the door only to reveal a bottle of sparkling English wine, a half pint of milk and some eggs. What a lovely touch. I was at a beverage related crossroads; I had planned to assemble a coffee from the very lovely looking Nepresso machine, but now I had discovered the sparkling wine? Like anyone else in my position I weighed up the options and decided that having both was the only way forward. Gathering my drinks I headed for the bathroom. A sip, disrobe and another sip later, I was enjoying the marvellous sensation of a rainfall shower. I thought; if this is how the other half live, I want to trade sides.

HOW SAFE IS YOUR HOME WHEN YOU RETIRE? Two things concern me, well, lots of things concern me, however, the two I want to share are the following: 1. If your home is on an interest only mortgage, what do you do when the term comes to an end? 2. If you live in a rented property, how do you pay your rent when you retire? If your home is on an interest only mortgage, what do you do when the term comes to an end? Thousands of people took out interest only mortgages between the 1980’s and the property crash in 2008. Alongside the mortgage, they would have taken out an endowment, with promises of the endowment paying off the mortgage at the end of the term and very likely have a surplus of cash to have fun with in your retirement years. The reality was, the endowments performed dismally. Some people cashed them in and those who did not, did not have enough to pay the mortgage off. Thus, resulting in many selling their beloved homes and going into rented. Mortgage companies are becoming increasingly aware of this and many are willing to negotiate an extension or swap to a repayment plan. So if you are in this position or will be in the next few years then please do speak to your mortgage provider, how relieved would you be if you could sort something now? If you live in a rented property, how do you pay your rent when you retire? My second concern, are for the renters, who cannot or decide not to get on the property ladder. When we retire, we expect to pay off our huge mortgage meaning we need less income to live. If you are renting, you will always have a hefty bill to pay each month, rents will only get higher year on year due to not enough affordable housing being built and demand being high, especially in the private rented sector. You will most probably have to seek help from the government by way of housing benefit, pension credit top up etc. and you could very easily be told, you will have to move as you have too many bedrooms or the rent is too high? The Government surely must see this is a financial burden on the state? Especially as we are all living longer. Perhaps the youth of today, will work until they die as they keep extending the retirement age? I am currently working on a plan to help with this one so please watch this space or email me (sharon@moveon.biz) if you would like further information. I am really passionate in helping more people get on the property ladder, to own their own home and not worry about how they can afford to stay in it when they retire! If you are looking to, rent, sell, buy or invest, then choose Move On because we are simply … the best. DON’T MISS OUR ADVERT ON PAGE 69. Have a good week! Sharon If you would like a friendly, no obligation chat regarding any property matter, then please Email sharon@moveon.biz or telephone 01202 711169. TRAVEL
CELEBRATE DIRTY DANCING’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY We check-in to the real Kellerman’s Resort Susan Griffin heads to Mountain Lake Lodge, Virginia where Dirty Dancing was shot, and discovers there’s more to this magical place than simply movie memorabilia. I’m standing, arms crossed, while my other half uploads pictures of himself in front of our hotel to Instagram. Determined to share his location with the online world, he remains oblivious to the fact I’m impatient to take my turn posing. For this isn’t any old hotel, it’s one of the movie world’s most famous landmarks, known to millions of Dirty Dancing fans as Kellerman’s Resort, the very place where Baby (Jennifer Grey) carried a water melon and fell in love with hot dance instructor Johnny (played by the late Patrick Swayze). The truth is, before we arrived, Baby’s cabin meant nothing to my boyfriend, but a day into our stay and he’s already acting like the film’s number one fan. But then it’s hard not to be captivated by nostalgia in the hotel’s secluded and timeless location.
The real Kellerman’s The film was set in the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York, but was predominantly shot at Mountain Lake Lodge in Virginia, a four-hour drive from Washington DC, and set in the middle of a 2,600-acre nature preserve, surrounded by the southern Appalachian Mountains. A sense of familiarity At 4,000 feet above sea level, we pull into the hotel’s drive, just like the Housemans do in the movie, and it’s a rather surreal feeling. The hotels stone facade, which dates back to the 1930s, is familiar, as is the sight of Baby’s cabin across the manicured front lawn, where Kellerman’s guests bunny hop at the beginning of the film. In the distance, there’s the gazebo where Baby’s father finds solace after finding out his daughter’s spent the night with Johnny, but there’s no lake and its eerily quiet in an out-of-season early April.
Banter with the barman We make our way inside the main lodge where we’re greeted by superchatty barman Michael, who offers us a local beer, a strawberry cobbler and the chance to watch the film on the small TV in the corner. We accept all three as we take our seats in the rustic Stony Creek Tavern, with its huge stone fireplace. Michael began his career at Mountain Lake Lodge shortly after the film was made, but he’s the oracle on all things Dirty Dancing and the man who takes charge of the tours during the moviethemed weekends, which happen throughout the warmer months.
Gazebo in Dirty Dancing (Picture credit: PA Photo/Michael Hyland) 124
In between reeling off quotes from the movie, he tells us how Swayze would ask to be called ‘Buddy’ and muck in with crew at the end of a day’s filming, while Grey would keep herself to herself.
TRAVEL
We wake the next morning to a milky sun and sip warming cups of coffee on our porch’s rocking chairs, while listening to the sound of rustling trees and birdsong. Breakfast is served in Hunter Restaurant, which has barely changed since Baby first spied Johnny and poured water over an unrepentant Robbie. You’ll struggle to do the lift in the lake After breakfast we meet Grace, a guide at Mountain Lake Lodge who takes us on a lake bed trail. The lake is a natural phenomenon as it drains and refills itself in a cyclical process, thanks to a network of caverns that lie beneath. It’s been dry for nine years and no one knows for sure when the water will return. Guests might not be able to go boating, but the rare and threatened species that flourish here make it one of the most bio-diverse areas in the United States, and a fascinating place to explore.
Mountain Lake Lodge, Pembroke, Virginia (Picture credit: PA Photo/Mountain Lake Lodge)
Grace tells us about Civil War soldiers who walked the terrain, and points out the spot where the famous lake lift in Dirty Dancing happened. There’s still evidence of the underwater platform they erected for the scene.
Beware of the uber-fans and foul play Michael also fills us in on the uberfans he’s encountered over the years, the cheeky guests who’ve tried to make off with memorabilia and what he describes as the films ‘anomalies’, including Marjorie Houseman’s hair at the beginning of the film (it’s a different colour) and the fact Johnny is technically driving through the archway in the wrong direction. Talk then turns to the unnerving number of ghosts that supposedly haunt the lodge. Not least the little girl ghoul, who’s said to run into room 232, the very same room Swayze called home during production. Stay in a cabin in the woods We aren’t staying in the lodge itself, but in one of the wooden cabins in the grounds, which is just a stone’s throw from Virginia Cottage, aka Baby’s cabin, which you can also stay in.

TRAVEL
You can learn the merengue In the afternoon, we make our way back down the mountain and head to the Sapphire Ballroom, in the small town of Christiansburg. We meet Debbie, who’s been tasked with teaching myself - and a rather resigned-looking boyfriend - some simple steps (private lessons cost from £44). We begin with the foxtrot. It’s a disaster and our merengue is even worse, despite the other half’s concentration as Debbie puts him through his paces. After an hour, exhausted and with muscles aching, we drive to the nearby student town of Blacksburg, and tuck into a feast of Cajun shrimp dip and a calzone at the popular Cellar restaurant (meals approx. £6-£10). If you like things cheesy and fried, you’ll be in your element here in southwest Virginia. It’s a foodie haven Palisades, a delightful restaurant in Eggleston, is another great spot. The atmosphere is buzzing as we heartily chow down on a feast of quesadilla, bison and potato hash, and chicken with local stone-ground grits and smoked gouda (meals approx. £11-£22). Be warned - it might be in the middle of nowhere, but it’s definitely worth booking ahead.
Walker Valley, a store run by the local Amish community, Pearisburg (Picture credit: PA Photo/Michael Hyland)
It’s worth exploring Virginia’s valleys On our last day, we set out with Grace to explore the surrounding villages scattered across the verdant valley, stopping off at the Walker Valley Market, a store run by the local Amish community, and the ironically-named Dismal Falls, a picture-perfect spot that calls out for a dip on sun-drenched days. Mountain Lake Lodge might be a Dirty Dancing fan’s dream, but the hotel and surrounding area is rich in history and nature. When we end the trip as we began, back in Stony Creek Tavern, we’re lamenting the fact we can’t stay longer. How to get there Weekend Packages at Mountain Lake Lodge cost £267 per person (two sharing), including all meals, two dance parties, Dirty Dancing film tour, group dance lessons and two nights accommodation. HOW TO NAIL THE FOLIAGE TREND IN EACH ROOM OF YOUR HOUSE Go green at home with our guide to embracing houseplants Houseplants are back in vogue. Once a popular feature in Sixties and Seventies homes, they fell out of favour in the minimalist Nineties, but now going green indoors is all the rage again. “We’ve observed the creeping return of greenery in the way some of the chicest folk around decorate their homes today,” says Kara O’Reilly, coauthor with Ian Drummond of At Home With Plants . “Cool interiors are upping the variety of plant pots in their ranges, and there’s a revival of everything from terrariums to hanging planters as decorative elements.” RIGHT: Three containers of palms make an eyecatching display and blur the boundary between the indoors and outdoors. (from left) Kentia palm; Washington palm; Kentia palm and Chinese Windmill palm
“One of the most amazing things about houseplants is that you enjoy them all year round, and there’s nothing more satisfying to the soul than nurturing a living thing,” adds Kara. “With a little know-how, even the least green fingered among us can grow an indoor plant. But be warned - once you start, the look will grow on you!”
Living room “Houseplants can have enormous impact in a living room because there are so many areas to display them,” says Kara. “Follow the fashion for hanging planters - in macrame, metal or marble - and attach them to the
LEFT & ABOVE: A collection of plants, including begonias, echevaria and white striped Cretan brake arranged on a mantel
ceiling to create a ‘green screen’. Or invest in a set of open shelves, fill with potted plants to make a room divider. Quirky containers for foliage such as vintage hampers - will inject personality into a setting” How to display: Surfaces from mantels to shelves, windowsills and side tables are perfect homes for plants. If you have the space, go to town with a group of different sized, floor-standing architectural palms to create a focal point.

INTERIORS
What to pick: Palms, weeping figs or finger trees are all conversation pieces. Choose plants in foliage colours to complement your ornaments or colour scheme, such as trailing plants, English ivy, chain cactus; or flowering plants such as flamingo flower, pink quill or vanda orchids.
Kitchen “The kitchen’s the heart of the home, so why not show yours a little love with some creative planting?” says Kara. “Herbs are an obvious choice, as they’re attractive, an invaluable cooking ingredient and their fragrance can mask odours.” How to display: Try placing a large container of mixed herbs on a table, or plant individual varieties of herbs in matching pots and line them up along a shelf, a windowsill, or a work surface. What to pick: Chives, coriander, mint, basil. They prefer a light, bright position such as a sunny windowsill and regular water and occasional misting. Ideally, buy plants from a garden centre as they’ll last longer. Asplenium ferns, echeveria succulents and moth orchids also thrive in kitchens with lots of light. RIGHT: Create your own indoor kitchen garden with a selection of edible plants such as kumquat; calamondin orange; mixed herbs and chilli pepper BELOW: Pots of lavender are a simple way to introduce some soothing scent and seasonal colour into your home

INTERIORS
Bathroom “Most bathrooms tend to fall into one of two camps: light and humid, or dark and humid. While light levels are obviously a key consideration when choosing plants for any space, with a bathroom you need to select humidity-loving plants above all,” advises Kara. How to display: Arrange plants so they’re within your sight line when taking a soak in the tub or a shower. In a small space, choose miniature varieties and dot them amongst your lotions and potions. What to pick: Cacti and most succulents are an absolute no-no. Orchids, ferns, aloes and palms all like humidity and can also tolerate fluctuations in temperature. Trailing plants work well, including spider plants; heart-leaf philodendron and chestnut vine. Foliage plants are a better choice for a dark bathroom as flowering plants generally need higher levels of light. RIGHT: A variety of humidity loving plants in a spacious bathroom (from left) Tradescantia (wandering Jew); English ivy; sword fern; umbrella tree; and variegated Cupid peperomia BELOW: FA line up of tiny, trailing Hedera helix (English ivy) hanging down from pots grouped on the bed head, turns a plain bedside shelf into a striking design statement
Bedroom “Plants don’t only look good in bedrooms - but they can also help us feel calm and act as natural air conditioners, gently raising the humidity levels and improving air quality,” says Kara. How to display: A plant on a bedside table will upgrade its look and is a welcoming touch for a guest. Consider an indoor tree by a bed, or hanging planters to bring interest to a dull corner. What to pick: Plants that cope with slightly lower temperatures and potentially lower light levels. Seek out varieties which are proven toxic filters, such as heartleaf philodendron and peace lily. Improve air quality by choosing plants that release oxygen at night, such as orchids, Barbados aloe and mother-in-law’s tongue; while lavender (known as a sleep inducer) could scent the air. At Home With Plants, by Ian Drummond & Kara O’Reilly, with photography by Nick Pope, is published by Mitchell Beazley, priced £20. Available now. 7 LATE-FLOWERING BLOOMS TO MAKE SUMMER LAST Keep your garden looking colourful for longer
144
2
Sedum Spectabile
The end of summer can mark the start of wilted annuals and faded perennials, but if you add some beautiful, bold lateflowering additions, you can make your garden a riot of colour until autumn. It’s easy to prolong the season with dahlias, heleniums, rudbeckias and a host of other bright blooms which will fit into many planting schemes and situations.
These pink late-summer flowers will save your garden from getting the blues well into autumn. Plant in a sunny position in your garden and pair with Japanese anemones, phlox or penstemons. These require little care, just check your plants regularly to make sure they’re not too dry.

Dahlia
Flowering from mid-summer until the first frosts (which can be around mid-October, depending where you live), these popular blooms come in bronze, dark red, lavender, orange and pink, and are all different shapes and sizes. They make great standalones in their own beds or paired with grasses and verbena plants. They need a well-worked soil with good drainage and, once they’re established, be sure to water them three or four times a week.
Helenium
These vibrant, daisy-shaped orange flowers bloom in late summer and autumn. Brilliant on their own or pair with tall, purple salvias, for a nice contrast. Grow in fertile, moist, but well-drained soil and deadhead regularly to ensure they flower for longer. Hydrangea
Flaunting an old-fashioned charm in a variety of colours - blues, vibrant pinks and frosty whites - Hydrangeas grow up to six feet high and wide, so they’re great for creating a ‘sea of flowers’ effect. You can get different varieties, including lacecap, mophead or oakleaf hydrangeas. Consider placing in front of taller plants like small or medium-size trees that could offer the shade the shrubs prefer. But beware, too much shade can reduce their flowering.
5
Rudbeckias
These are bushy plants that create masses of bold, zingy yellow flowers. Also known as blackeyed Susans because of their distinctive big black cone in the centre, they have a long flowering period between July to October. They are drought-resistant, not too fussy about soil type, and can grow over three feet tall, with a flower diameter of 2-3 inches. RIGHT: Pink and purple Hydrangeas (Picture credit: PA Photo/thinkstockphotos) BELOW: Aster x frikartii, known as the Michaelmas daisy (Picture credit: PA Photo/ thinkstockphotos) BOTTOM LEFT: Rudbeckia (Picture credit: PA Photo/thinkstockphotos)

Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’
For a splash of purple, then try Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’, a purple, daisy-like flower with a yellow centre. These bushy herbaceous perennials can grow up to 90cm and like an open, sunny position. Cut back in late autumn and pair with a tall, pink penstemon.
7
Crocosmia
These bright flowers are maintenance-free and easy to grow, so they’ll add an easy shot of colour to your garden. Their bold, sword-like flowers mainly come in reds, oranges and yellows. Depending on the variety, crocosmia can grow up to a metre tall, and they don’t need pruning, just remove the dead leaves and flower stems before spring, when new growth starts. ABOUT US The concept of Reformed Plastics was born over 15 years ago from the curiosity of its founder. Being an engineer by profession, and having had his own UPVC Windows business, and also being the practical and inquisitive person that he is, one day he decided to find out what was really happening to the waste that people were so freely throwing away. His research and interest lead him to focus on plastics, how it can be recycled and what it could be reused for. He discovered that the USA and a few European countries had been recycling and remanufacturing waste plastics into alternative timber products for many years, instead of throwing it all into landfill! Over time, slowly but surely he developed a few basic products in the form of planks and posts and very soon he began to receive interest from people wanting to know more about this revolutionary product that

FERRARI F40 ANNIVERSARY
148
Ferrari is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its iconic F40 model, the last car to carry the “signature” of the founder Enzo Ferrari. Described as an extreme derivation of the 308 GTB and of the 288 GTO Evoluzione prototype, the Ferrari F40 is regarded as a masterpiece of engineering and style, which entered the collective imagination as a symbol of an era. Leonardo Fioravanti was a designer at Pininfarina when he was invited by Enzo Ferrari to try the 288 GTO Evoluzione: “It was then that he first talked to me of his desire to produce a “true Ferrari”. We knew, as he knew, that it would be his last car. “We threw ourselves headlong into the work. Its style matches its performance - the low bonnet with a very tiny overhang, the air vents and the rear spoiler made it famous. If I had to point out one overriding reason for the success of the F40, I would say that its line succeeded in instantly transmitting the exceptionality of its technical content: speed, lightness, and performance.” The F40 is on show at the Ferrari Museum of Maranello as part of the “Under the Skin” exhibition devoted to the evolution of innovation and style in the 70-year history of the Company.
ROAD TEST: MAZDA CX-5 SE-L NAV Mazda’s new CX-5 builds on a model which was already outstanding in its class and even though the sector now has more rivals, the Mazda still holds most of the ace cards, writes NICK FLETCHER. The CX-5 is a mid-size SUV priced from £23,695. There are petrol and diesel engines, though most buyers will opt for the smooth responsive diesels, available in 148 hp and 163 hp form. My test model had the 148hp unit, offering a 0-60mph time of 9.4 seconds and top speed of 127 mph. Fuel economy is 56.5 mpg combined. This version, with auto gearbox and in SE-L Nav 2WD form, costs £25,695. The new CX-5 has a dominant exterior look, with narrow headlights, deep grille and wide bonnet giving it real presence – and image is very important in the SUV sector. The cabin impresses too with a smart clear dashboard, quality trim materials, and a wealth of standard equipment which includes dual-zone air-con, auto lights and wipers, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, engine stopstart, 7-inch multi-media touchscreen, Bluetooth, sat-nav, four USB imputs, privacy glass and 17-inch alloys. The CX-5 is a five seater and even taller adults get plenty of leg and headroom in the rear. Seating is very comfortable
– even the rear seats recline - and the driver gets good all-round visibility – the front pillars are slimmer than most and the large rear screen helps too. Boot space is roomy at 506 litres, expandable to 1,620 litres. And the seats drop to form a completely flat floor - no ledges to make loading awkward. Mazda designers have also taken care of oddment-stowage, providing a large glovebox, roomy doorbins and other cubby holes, and of course cup/bottle holders. And with USB ports even in the rear, children can plug in their gadgets with trailing wires from the front. So far, a totally positive report, but what it is like to drive? Well, the praise keeps coming! The diesel engine is smooth, quiet and eager, the auto gearbox has seamless shifts, and the suspension, though a tad firm, is still compliant enough for a comfortable ride. The steering gives plenty of feedback so you feel fully in control and the grip is reassuringly composed even on tight cornering. I tried hard to fault the new CX-5 but failed on any significant issues. Certainly one or two rivals can score points for being slightly greener or maybe a little more fun to drive, but in my view the overall strength and depth of the CX-5 package overwhelms these aspects.
NEW JAGUAR E-PACE Jaguar’s new E-Pace five-seat compact performance SUV is now available to order in both petrol and diesel form and priced from £28,500. Jaguar says it will be among the ‘most connected’ in the sector and all models come with a standard 10-inch touchscreen and the option of a 12.3 inch version. There are up to four 12-volt charging points and five USB connections as well as a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices. The all-wheel-drive E-PACE features a choice petrol and diesel engines, one of which - the 296 hp petrol turbo engine - powers E-PACE from 0-60mph in just 5.9 seconds before reaching an electronically-limited top speed of 151mph. The E-PACE is also available with an innovative wearable Activity Key. The waterproof and shockproof wristband has an integrated transponder, allowing the driver to lock the main key inside the vehicle when enjoying activities such as running, swimming or cycling. A special soft-grain Windsor leather interior in Ebony with red contrast stitching and an Ebony suedecloth headlining give the cabin a distinctive appearance.
High levels of standard equipment are a core component of the E-PACE range and include features such as Touch Pro infotainment, LED headlights and a rear view camera system are joined by advanced driver assistance systems including Driver Condition Monitor and Emergency Braking. Luggage capacity is 577 litres with the rear seats in place, and 1,234 litres with them folded. The loadspace can accommodate a folded buggy, a full set of golf clubs sideways or six flight suitcases.

JEEP RUBICON RECON MODEL
ROAD TEST: VOLKSWAGEN GOLF ALLTRACK ESTATE The big-selling Volkswagen Golf has been the benchmark family hatchback for many years, admired and respected for its style and durability, but for those who require more space and versatility, the Golf estate is the answer, writes NICK FLETCHER. Recently revised and given a cooler, more classy look, the Golf estate now costs on average £650 LESS than the previous model, despite upgraded equipment and new engine options. Prices start at £19,470 for the well-kitted S version. However, many VW buyers are prepared to splash out on higher-spec models laden with extra technology, convenience and luxury features which send the flagship versions beyond £30,000. This was the case with my Alltrack all-wheel-drive version, which in 182 hp 2.0 litre diesel form and 7-speed auto gearbox costs £31,060. For that you get a raft of extra features including adaptive cruise control, climate control, sat-nav with 8-inch touchscreen, more connectiveity features than I have the space to list, driver personalisation profile – in essence you can set all the main controls for four different drivers - 17 inch alloys, roof rails, front and rear parking sensors and reversing
camera, and a wealth of safety features including predictive pedestrian protection. The more distinctive new look adds elegance to this estate model, and its driving feel quickly underlines the good impression this car creates Smooth, quiet, refined, responsive, it ticks every box. The auto gearshift is seamless and has an eager kick-down for immediate power when required. The steering is precise, the suspension (raised on the Alltrack for more ground clearance ) is still well balanced for cornering grip yet supple ride quality. The 2.0 litre engine 182 hp engine gives sports-car acceleration – 0-60 mph takes just 7.8 seconds, with top speed 132 mph. Fuel economy is 54.3 mph combined. The cabin is straightforward rather than eye-catching, but everything is easy to find and use. Space for four occupants is very good and while there is room for a fifth, the gearbox tunnel hump would make long trips a tad cramped. At 605 litres, boot space is among the largest in the class, and boosts to 1,620 with the rear seats folded. As a stylish practical family estate, there is little to fault on the Golf Alltrack. It has to be on the short list of anyone in the market for a mid-size estate model.
Jeep has expanded its range of Wrangler 4x4 models with the introduction of a new limited edition, the Rubicon Recon, priced from £40,505. It offers improved 4x4 capability thanks to specific off-road components including a stronger front axle and heavy-duty cast rear differential covers. Based on the existing Wrangler Rubicon model, the new Recon adds extra features including 18-inch Low Gloss Granite Crystal painted aluminium wheels, a black dual top (including both soft and hardtop options), and a dual-vented Power Dome hood with a black-silhouette “Rubicon” decal. A black-and-red theme characterises the inside, with Red accent stitching on standard black leather heated seats, and on the seatbelts. The Recon special-edition comes in two- and four-door specification and is powered by a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine delivering 284 hp and matched to an automatic fivespeed gearbox.
ALFA STELVIO DEBUT Alfa Romeo has announced prices and specification details of its new Stelvio SUV model which enters UK showrooms in September priced from £33,990. Four trim levels will be available and at launch, drivers will be able to choose between two engine versions – 2.2-litre 210 hp diesel Q4 AWD and 2.0-litre 280 hp petrol Q4 AWD – combined with an ZF eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. The 2.0-litre 280hp petrol Q4 AWD engine offers best in class acceleration, going from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 143 mph, while returning 40.4 mpg combined. The 2.2-litre 210 hp diesel Q4 AWD returns 58.9 mpg combined, with a 0-60 mph time of 6.6 seconds and top speed of 134 mph From September the Stelvio will also be available to order with a 2.2-litre diesel engine, producing 180 hp and available in both Q4 all-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive, and a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 200 hp and Q4 all-wheel-drive. The entry trim level ‘Stelvio’ includes 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, 8.8-inch display infotainment system with DAB plus Bluetooth/AUX multimedia connectivity, an eightspeaker audio system and two front and two rear USB ports.

ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT I DERMAL FILLERS I SKIN BOOSTING INJECTIONS Aesthetic medicine is an inclusive term for specialties that focus on improving cosmetic appearance through the treatment of many conditions such as wrinkles, crows lines, skin discolouration and spider veins to name just a few. Our team of aestheticians and in-house independent nurse practitioner provide Anti-Wrinkle Treatments, Dermal Fillers and Skin Boosting Injections. ANTI WRINKLE INJECTIONS Made from a drug called Botulinum Toxin, these injections relax the muscle to stop lines and wrinkles forming. We target only the small, specific muscles responsible for unwanted lines and wrinkles, meaning your normal facial expressions will remain unaffected. Administered correctly by a medical practitioner they can subtly smooth and soften the skin, restoring a youthful complexion. Initial consultations are needed before this treatment. DERMAL FILLERS As your skin ages, it loses the collagen that helps shape and support it. Dermal Fillers are used as an effective treatment for deep lines and wrinkles. They help reduce deep lines and wrinkles, fill hollows, enhance sunken cheeks and smooth the contours of your face. Anti-ageing facial fillers are the non-surgical way to achieve younger looking skin. SKIN BOOSTING INJECTIONS Skin boosters are different to dermal fillers as they aim to hydrate and smooth as opposed to ‘fill’ lines. Skin Boosting Injections improve the skin’s texture, elasticity, hydration and surface tone giving a more youthful appearance.

HOW AND WHY TO EAT DAIRY NOW Cookery Writer Annie Bell Dispels The Myths Time to put dairy back on the menu. In weightwatching terms, we all know now that refined sugar’s the real ‘enemy’, and those low-fat yogurts we’ve been spooning down for years are crammed with sugar to replace the fat. But with so many celebs giving up all animal products to go vegan from Jay-Z and Beyonce to Jared Leto - we’re still a little bit confused about dairy. Cookery writer Annie Bell has an MSc in human nutrition. She splits her time between a flat in London and a 17th century farmhouse in Normandy, where the local markets are full of artisanal cheeses, and is a big advocate for dairy. She even calls it a “superfood” in her new book, The Modern Dairy. Annie gave up dairy for several years after her mum died seven years ago - but a check-up at the doctor’s turned out to be a wake-up call. “I had this real loss of appetite and went off dairy,” she recalls. “The foods I wanted to eat were soups and chicken and vegetables and nuts - I didn’t think dairy mattered. It was this myth that I was going to feel better if I didn’t eat dairy. “The doctor gave me a sheet of facts about calcium and how to get it. It was such an eye-opener, that there was almost no other way of getting it, so now I make a point of eating dairy every single day.” Now a fully-fledged fan of the stuff, there’s no looking back for Annie. Here, she sorts some of the dairy facts from fiction... MYTH: Eating dairy products is bad for you “The truth is there is no evidence to support it being in any way harmful. It’s an extraordinary food if you think about the range of nutrients it contains.
Fig, Gorgonzola & Basil Croutes (Serves 6)
It’s very adaptable in terms of its macronutrient breakdown. It can be very high in protein, it might be very high in fat, but you can alter that depending on what your aims are,” says Annie. “It also has this incredible collection of micronutrients - in particular, the calcium. There is no other food that can match it or come even close to it. Dairy is a high-quality fat and it has a wide array of benefits. There are all the fat-soluble vitamins that it carries, which you will only get in full-fat dairy, not in skimmed milk and low fat. It also keeps you full for longer - fat acts in a way, after you’ve eaten, that it promotes the release of this particular hormone which stops you feeling hungry and eating again at the next stage.” FACT: Aim to eat 3 portions of dairy a day “The guidance in terms of how much fat we should derive from our diet is quite generous, so in this book, I’m not saying eat masses and masses of butter, what I’m saying is you don’t need to cut it out or eat a low-fat diet. “I find the most helpful way of including the right amount of dairy in my daily diet is to treat it as I do my five-a-day fruit and veg, by aiming for three-aday of different types. A bit from each fat level is probably the ideal; one low, one medium, one high, bearing in mind that their size is proportionately smaller the higher the fat. “So it could be you have a 150g portion of yogurt, perhaps you use some sour cream or quark in a nice sauce to go in a salad and then use a small, matchbox-size portion of a high-fat cheese like Parmesan to go over something.”
Annie Bell (Photo credit: PA Photo/Nassima Rothacker/Kyle Books)
FACT: The higher the quality, the better it is for you “Because the way we farm has changed so much, the fatty acid profile of the nutrient content of milk has also changed. There is a massive difference between pasture-reared cattle and those that are basically just kept indoors in barns and fed on grain. “One route is organic produce. I always go for the organic milk, the organic yogurt; it’s readily available, and also treating yourself to the nice, artisanal cheeses, there’s a good selection in supermarkets. I would avoid the block-style commercial cheeses, those are the ones that have less [nutritional] value and more salt.” The Modern Dairy: Nourishing Recipes Using Milk, Yogurt, Cheese And Cream by Annie Bell is published in paperback by Kyle Books, priced £16.99. Available now By Kate Whiting, Press Association Feeling inspired? Try one of these three recipes...
Ingredients 12 x 1cm-thick slices of baguette, lightly toasted 180g Gorgonzola, cut into 12 thick slices 3 figs (approx 150g), stalks trimmed Extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling 3tbsp runny honey A few tiny basil leaves, cut into thin strips
Method Preheat the grill to high. Spread each croute with a slice of Gorgonzola, taking it just within the rim. Cut a small slice off each fig either side, and then cut downwards into four slices. Lay a slice on each croute, and arrange in a roasting pan. Drizzle over a little olive oil and the honey and grill until the toast surround is nice and golden and the cheese is softened, without melting to a river.

Method
For the pancakes: 80g plain flour 80g buckwheat flour 2tsp baking powder Pinch of golden caster sugar Pinch of fine sea salt 1 medium free-range egg, separated 300ml whole milk 2tsp groundnut or vegetable oil for grilling
Sift the flours and baking powder into a large bowl and then add the sugar and salt. Whisk the egg yolk and milk in another bowl until blended. Pour this mixture onto the sifted dry ingredients and whisk until smooth.
To serve: Softened salted butter Honeycomb
In the meantime, heat a cast-iron frying pan or flat griddle over a lowish heat for 10 minutes, until it reaches an even, snug warmth. Grease the hot iron with oil using a brush, then drop tablespoons of the mixture into the pan, spaced slightly apart. Cook for one to two minutes until the surface pits with bubbles, then carefully turn the pancakes using

Remove them to a plate, smear with a little salted butter and a dollop of honeycomb, and eat while you put some more on to cook, reoiling the pan now and again between batches as it needs it. Alternatively, if you are making them in advance, keep them covered with foil on a plate for up to 30 minutes. They can also be reheated in an oven preheated to 160C fan/180C/gas mark 4. Pea & Parmesan Fritters (Serves 4)
PA Photo/Con Poulos/Kyle Books
Ingredients
Method
For the fritters: 2tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for frying Sea salt, black pepper 1/2tsp caster sugar 200g fresh shelled peas 4 medium free-range eggs 1tbsp lemon juice 75g Parmesan, freshly grated 4tbsp coarsely chopped flat-leaf parsley, plus extra (optional), to serve
Put the two tablespoons of olive oil in a medium saucepan with three tablespoons of water, half a teaspoon of salt and the sugar. Bring this to a simmer over a high heat, add the peas and cook, tossing occasionally, for about three minutes until just tender, then drain.
For the rocket salad (optional): Large handful of rocket leaves 1tbsp extra virgin olive oil Squeeze of lemon juice Handful of Parmesan shavings Salt 154
Whisk the eggs in a large bowl with the lemon juice and some seasoning, then fold in the Parmesan, peas and parsley. You can do this a short time in advance. Heat a large non-stick frying pan over a high heat, add about a teaspoon of oil, then drop tablespoons of the mixture into the pan, spreading them out into omelettes 10cm in diameter. Cook for about one minute each side until really golden.
You will need to do this in batches, draining them on a double thickness of kitchen paper as you go, and adding more oil to the pan as necessary. If serving with a salad, toss the rocket leaves with enough olive oil to coat them in a bowl, then season with a squeeze of lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Divide the fritters between four plates, pile the salad on top, scatter over a few Parmesan shavings and drizzle over a little more oil. Alternatively, just scatter the fritters with a little more parsley to serve.

Suitable for all the family the event attracts thousands of people, all ready to soak up the party atmosphere and get in the mood for summer! There is street entertainment, live music and family activities, all starting at 7pm. And the finale of the night is a fantastic firework display over the harbour at 10pm.

Hailed by critics as ‘nothing short of spine-tingling’ with ‘an outstandingly strong cast’, Wonderland is an enchanting musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, with a huge heart, a medley of magic and a whole lot of wonder. It is a timely and touching story of love and an adventurous exploration of who we are, who we want to be and the power of everyday magic in our lives. The stellar cast includes TV and West End star Wendi Peters, much loved for her acclaimed portrayal of Cilla Battersby-Brown in Coronation Street, as Queen of Hearts and musical theatre legend Dave Willetts, best known for playing title roles in The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables, as White Rabbit. Leading lady Kerry Ellis, who has previously played lead roles in Wicked, We Will Rock You, Cats, Oliver! andMiss Saigon will guest star as Alice.

REVIEWED
We wanted to know what all the fuss was about...
FRANCO MANCA
Once you eat Napoli you’ll never go back Off of the back of our prior visit for the ‘pizza making’ evening, the generous team at Franco Manca invited us down for a more conventional sampling of food. Impressed with our previous visit and hungry for more, we trotted down one afternoon to give their regular menu a try.
brought over to wet our appetites. The list is simple, refined and subject to season, with only ever a handful or so of pizzas (and drinks) on the menu. Customisation is also an option and their ginormous blackboard is usually teaming with delicious daily specials.
We arrived to a familiar smiling face and the warm, welcoming atmosphere – something so synonymous with Italian dining. Each taking our seats, we gazed around the rustically dressed room, now that we weren’t flipping dough behind the counter, we had time to take in the venue’s décor. Mosaic tiles, wooden cladding and highlights of exposed brickwork made up its shell, with sporadically placed pendant lights giving the place a warm glow. Our table – laid with curvaceous tumblers, tin cutlery pots and an oil caddy – was already set with menus and so the perusal began.
Their drinks menu is a short and sweet combination of organic beer and cider, alternative wines and handmade juices – all of which are exclusive to the brand. Seeing as this was a lunchtime visit, I thought I’d go with something less potent – so cider it was! Crisp, distinctly fruity and slightly sparkling it was a pleasant all-rounder.
The theme is pizza, sourdough pizza, to be more precise. A modern reincarnation of traditional Napolese recipes, the Franco Manca pizza is far beyond your ordinary deep dish, in so many ways. Take the dough for example, which is made using a signature ‘sourdough starter’ (a pre-ferment of organic flour and water) that is prepared and constantly fed to keep the yeast alive. I scanned the options, whilst enjoying the exquisite cold cuts and organic mozzarella our host had
For research purposes I decided to go for their distinctive ‘corgette and basil pizza’. In the absence of a tomato, was a creamy (no doubt cheese filled) base, topped with chargrilled corgettes, chucky flakes of Parmesan and mozzarella, ricotta and a sprinkle of aromatic basil. Every mouthful was divine. The dough itself was moist (but not soggy) and packed with elasticity – making each bite light and moreish. Around the table was an array of gorgeous looking pizzas. Whichever one we were discussing the commentary kept coming back to just how fresh and flavorsome the toppings were. The chorizo was smoky and packed with spices. The Parmesan, which by the way is technically a ‘Grana’,
especially made for the company is flawless and unlike anything of its kind; everything in fact is a testament to their high-quality produce and clearly treated with respect by the chefs. It’s a beautiful thing, to taste food that has so much passion behind it. It’s not exactly something I can describe, but once you’ve tasted it, you’ll know the difference. We sat and took in the aroma of fresh pizza going to guests around us, reminding of us the amazing meal we had just eaten. Our Italian affair wouldn’t have been complete without a caffeinated something and so our attentive host saw to it that we each had a coffee for the road. The whole experience was magical; we had enjoyed a uniquely simple menu and come away excited about what we had eaten, with each of us reminiscing on the way back to the office. With the most expensive pizza on the menu being a mere £8.25, Franco Manca is a foodie’s dream. Fresh qualitative ingredients, beautiful combinations and radically fair prices make this pizza paradise a winner for me. By Charlotte Williams t. 01202 022068 a.
