JON BODEN & THE REMNANT KINGS Jon Boden, former front man of progressive folk eleven- piece Bellowhead, brings his Afterglow tour to Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts on 23 November. Afterglow is Boden’s first studio release since calling an end to Bellowhead, a 12-year project that culminated in a quarter of a million album sales and worldwide sell-out shows including the Royal Albert Hall. It also marks the reformation of the amazing Remnant Kings – a band that hasn’t performed together since 2012. Featuring the talents of former Bellowhead bandmates Sam Sweeney and Paul Sartin, plus Leveret’s Rob Harbron and Ben Nicholls and Richard Warren (King of the South Seas), the band will be joined by a string and brass section to celebrate the launch of the new album Afterglow. Across his career Boden has been awarded a recordbreaking 12 BBC Folk Awards, earned through his work with Bellowhead and Spiers & Boden. Now touring as both a solo artist and with his band The Remnant Kings, Jon will perform in both incarnations again this autumn
MAYOR OF CHRISTCHURCH OFFICIALLY OPENS MONTEREY, PLATINUM SKIES’ NEW RETIREMENT DEVELOPMENT On Thursday 21st September, the Mayor of Christchurch Councillor Nick Geary officially opened Monterey, Platinum Skies’ new retirement development, planting a Monterey sapling, the development’s namesake, to commemorate the opening. PATHS OF LIGHT EXHIBITION BY IRINA SONG Irina Song is presenting her Paths of Light exhibition at the Courtyard, Town Mill, Lyme Regis, from 10th to the 29th November. Irina tells us that, “My oil paintings will take viewer on a wonderful journey across magical world of brilliant colour, glistering light and divine inspiration. Each painting has its story behind, being born on the top of a cliff, on a beach or in deep valley of Dorset hills, where I used to walk to gain an inspiration. Blazing light and colours meet together in my paintings and create an impression of living melody or singing colours. “My acrylic paintings are rich in texture and every dancing brushstroke creates sense of joy and freedom. SAXE COBURG RAISE AWARENESS FOR THE POPPY APPEAL It’s almost that time of year where we will don the red poppy of Remembrance. HOLIDAY PROPERTY INSURANCE BEWARE THE SPECIAL TERMS I am always discussing insurance with both existing owners and first time renters as it’s crucial to have the right cover. It seems that insurance for holiday letting is particularly prone to big variations in price but as ever the real danger is in the small print; the cost of missing a special clause could be huge in the event of a claim. So what are the particular issues for insuring a holiday property?
not covered by public liability the costs will be large. Damage by guests - You’d think this would be one of the central points of holiday cottage insurance but it can be excluded. Beware the small print - clauses to watch out for:
‘Malicious’ damage by guests - If you have a clause excluding this it’s a grey area - what is malicious? You may find a broken door or furniture not covered.
Finally I always prefer to deal with a broker who does a lot of holiday insurance rather than a call centre. It may be a little more expensive but it’s worth it to get the right advice and support if you need to make a claim.
Things you won’t be covered for:
Employer’s liability - Do you employ a cleaner directly, if so you may be liable if they have an accident and it won’t be considered a ‘public’ liability.
Unoccupancy Clause - This can vary widely and I have seen some that would be almost impossible to comply with. Typically it may say that if the property is empty for more than a set period- normally 30-60 days then special terms apply. This could be weekly inspections, maintaining a certain temperature or even draining down the water system. Check carefully as poor policies may have a 7 or 14 day limit. It’s also possible that cover may be withdrawn for some things during periods of unoccupancy.
Loss of rent cover - If you have a flood in August you could end up losing several weeks or more at your highest tariff which is very painful if you are not covered.
Excess - Obvious but a cheap quote may be produced on the back of a high excess meaning you could be responsible for the first £500 or more of a claim.
Legal protection - Always worth having as it generally costs very little extra. You’re unlikely to need it but if you do get sued for something
Special excesses - The headline excess may be reasonable but further in the small print a higher one may apply in some circumstances. £1,000
Public liability - At least £2 million cover and often more is included. This is essential as the current environment seems to be that every accident is somebody’s fault and guests who have a fall will often rush to a claims lawyer.
Subsidence is normal but look out for extra excess for ‘escape of water’ or accidental damage.
Damage by dogs or other pets Everyone seems to exclude this nowadays so be aware that you will be footing the bill if you have an irresponsible dog owner. Fences, gates etc - Very pertinent given the recent weather, we lose quite a few and generally not covered.

Contents left in the open - If somebody pinches your garden furniture or anything else left out you won’t be able to claim. Previous history of flooding - Don’t think that because an insurance company has taken your money that you are covered. They won’t bother investigating unless there is a claim so if you are buying a new house find out if it has ever been flooded and make sure you can get cover before committing to the purchase.

Then we have the bespoke option,
made entirely to your unique specifications, within the relevant building regulations. These structures are water-tight, fully insulated and fit with all the bells and whistles – perfect for all kinds of use: home office, storage, playroom, gym and additional entertaining space – you name it. Q: What planning is required for a Garden Room? Stuart: “Absolutely nothing. That’s the beauty of these amazing structures. Due to their nature and the way in which they are built, planning permission is not required. In the rare case that the land or wildlife surrounding it requires special permittance (e.g. tree conservation regulations) then we would consult with the relevant authorities. Every step of the project is handled by our expert team, all you have to do is tell us how you want the finished product to look”. Q: How long does the average build take? Paul: “The structures themselves take little time at all. Ultimately it all depends on the foundations. Once we (if we even need to) have dug out, leveled and prepared the perfect base – which by the way we handle for you – the buildings then take a maximum of a week to erect, often merely a few days”.

TIME TRAVELLERS AT GREAT OAKS THE BAKE-OFF! The ceremony was concluded with cookies and refreshments – as well as delicious cakes that pupil Tia generously baked for the residents. Before leaving, the children also met resident Percy Cole, whose daughter works at Kinson Primary School. It is hoped that there will be lots more opportunities for the local school to get involved with community events at Great Oaks.

reat Oaks, the brand new Encore care home in Bournemouth, had a very special Time Capsule event with the children from Kinson Primary School
THE COMPETITION Great Oaks, the residential, nursing and dementia care home, teamed up with Kinson Primary School and offered the children the chance to put their winning competition entries into a time capsule, which is to be buried in the garden at Great Oaks for 100 years. The competition asked the pupils to write about their favourite memory with a grandparent, older relative or friend of the family. The teachers chose the best six entries and the winners attended the care home for an exclusive tour. THE TOUR Ms Bryan, Headteacher and Ms Lawson accompanied the children as they took a tour and learned about care homes. The winners of the competition were Ellie Ashby (year 3), Oli Hayward (year 2), Tia Dixon (year 6), Lucy Curtis (year 3), Cleo Rawlings (year 3) and Anisah Begum (year 6).
The winners were also joined by two reporters for the school paper. They had a tour of the salon, the spa bathroom and had a look at what a resident’s en suite bedroom looks like. Each child took turns on the adjustable bed to see how it can be effortlessly raised and lowered to make residents more comfortable. THE TIME CAPSULE After a tour of the home, the children met the Deputy Mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr Eddie Coope, and Day Breaks resident, Ron Gadsby. The Pupils read out their winning stories about their favourite memories with grandparents and placed them into the time capsule. The children were each given book tokens as a thank you for sharing their wonderful memories. Activities Manager, Sue Goktas, put forward articles, books, photos and memories from the residents of Great Oaks and care team members, who also wanted to contribute items for the time capsule. Ron presented a beautiful song that he wrote for his late wife, Catherine and placed the musical composition in the time capsule to be preserved.

A Q&A WITH;
HARBOURWOOD HOMES History in the making It all started with an idea. Owners ‘Steve Courtney’ and Dean Gaffikin had shown an aptitude for the construction industry from a young age. Having both attended the same engineering apprenticeship at a local college, it was destined that the two would go onto great things together. After studying they each set up their own respective companies. Steve a successful carpentry business, and Dean an equally successful plumbing firm. But fate brought them back together, after they were both brought in on the same job one summer. After many conversations Dean and Steve set up Harbourwood Homes and quickly undertook their first development. Two years later, we’re here with Dean Gaffikin talking about their incredibly exciting business and what makes them so unique.

Q: You both come from a trade background, that’s quite rare within the development world… Absolutely. I ran a plumbing business for 7 years. That experience – as well as Steve’s within his own carpentry business – has authenticated our approach to development. Having that inside
knowledge allows us to shape projects more efficiently and get it right the first time. Q: What excites you about the development industry? I really enjoy seeing a project go from nothing to this amazing finished product and I love to help landowners. The way we work, everyone wins. They get a premium for their land, and we get a site to develop, and furthermore more property for the community. Of course it’s always nice to get permission granted too. It’s really a testament to our team’s skill and attention to detail, when submitting planning and we often get the desired results first time. Q: What are your priorities when it comes to a project? Aside from planning, it has to be design. We’ve just started working with our neighbors over at Anders Roberts Cheer architects, because design is so important to us. We don’t want to just churn out ‘box houses’, so we work with the best in the business to make exciting and unique properties.
Q: Are you working to address any of the current issues in today’s property market? We don’t have a target audience as such. Though a pattern that seems to be emerging is a need for homes for young working families. Many of the late baby boomers were left out of the property race, leaving many of them still in rented accommodation, for lack of suitable available property. We’ve also noticed a real rise in the retired community selling their land and buying new property. A lot of people have worked hard all their life and aspire to live in something shiny and new. Ultimately, we are open to all opportunities. Q: What benefits would you offer to someone for selling his or her land to you? We are incredibly open. There is a kind of grey cloud surrounding developers – with this idea that we’re all a bit devious, but we like to be honest and as transparent as possible. Where we are a small business, without huge overheads, we can generally offer that little more and with our existing backlog of tradesman from our other businesses, we don’t have to contract any work out to a third party.

Q: …and likewise for investors? We are able to significantly reduce build costs while maintaining quality, due to our previous experience and contacts, in turn making more profit and a greater return for the investor. Tetra reveals the ultimate in quality bespoke craftsmanship born from a collaboration between Jigsaw Interior Architecture and Amirez Developments The last time I met with Matt, Shan and the Jigsaw Interior Architecture team was at the unveiling of their stunning show home on the riverside of Wick Lane; a property that subsequently reached the final shortlist, from hundreds of applicants, for the What House Awards in the Best Luxury House Category. Today I was on beautiful Evening Hill to meet with the team again to view their latest development. At the end of a secluded, private driveway, I saw Tetra, one of three spectacular four bedroom contemporary town houses completed this October by Amirez and designed by award winning architects Anders Roberts Cheer. Providing the ultimate in luxury living, Tetra has an essentially monochromatic colour palette, with a contemporary façade which contrasts exterior finishes of natural stone, smooth crisp render, matte
black window frames and grey timber cladding in an arresting geometric, textural contrast. The stylish interior is the result of a longstanding and proven collaboration between Amirez and Jigsaw Interior Architecture, a dream design partnership which marries bespoke design with supreme build quality. This duo’s portfolio is a perfect example of form and function working in harmony at the very highest level. Having had the opportunity to walk through the three houses it was no surprise to hear that house one, Hedra, was sold off plan in the early stages of the build process, with the lucky and excited owners almost ready to move into their new home. In Tetra and Dodeca the versatile accommodation is arranged over four floors, each with a terrace and serviced
by a lift (finished in opulent dark taupe leather), and from the sun room at the top, through the master bedroom on the second floor to the first floor’s kitchen/ living/dining space all are blessed with spectacular views over Poole Harbour, the Sandbanks peninsula, Brownsea Island and the Purbeck Hills beyond. Natasha Stynes, Jigsaw’s lead Interior Architectural Designer on the project, knew that when working with Amirez there would be no compromise when it came to design concepts or with the quality of materials available to her; she relished this opportunity to freely realise an entirely bespoke and exceptionally finished scheme. come into play. From 2020, all privately rented homes on new or existing tenancies granted with an F or G rating will be banned completely.

WASHINGTON, DC It’s been blasted all over TV screens for the past two years, but there’s more to America’s capital than Mr Trump, says Susan Griffin.

Think of Washington DC and most people automatically picture the White House or Capitol building, but there’s more to do in this elegant city than simply posing for your selfie outside these iconic landmarks.
I happily spend the morning museumhopping before wandering along to the Washington Monument, an obelisk stretching over 500ft, past the fountains of the National World War II Memorial and onto the Reflecting Pool, which will be familiar if you’ve watched Forrest Gump.
That said, I still find myself jostling for space to grab a snap in front of both, but then America’s capital is made for sightseeing. Blighted by violence in the past, the city’s undergone a clean-up in recent years and I feel perfectly safe ambling around. It’s a metropolis that welcomes walking with a grid system of wide roads - running across in numbers and down in letters - making it easy to navigate.

Where to eat You can’t visit Washington DC and not stop-off for a Chili Half-Smoke (a pork and beef sausage, topped with onions and chilli sauce, priced $5.95/£4.50) at the Ben’s Chili Bowl (benschilibowl. com) on U Street. The bustling diner might not be glamorous, but customers have included the likes of Dr Martin Luther King and Ella Fitzgerald. Even Barack Obama dropped by shortly before he was inaugurated. In the shadow of the Capitol, you’ll find the stylish Charlie Palmer Steak (charliepalmer.com/charlie-palmersteak-dc). Tuck into the Iced Shellfish Platter with its lobster tail and oysters ($39/£30 per person) and follow it up with a 28-Day Dry-Aged Steak ($49/£38). If you’re lucky, the general manager, Michael Irving, might take you to the terrace, which is normally reserved for private functions, to take in the incredible views. Where to drink You can’t go too wrong if you head to 14th street, which is lined with unpretentious bars and restaurants, attracting a young and stylish crowd.
If you’re something of a wine buff, make a beeline for Barcelona Wine Bar (barcelonawinebar.com), which offers 40 different wines by the glass. The Old Ebbitt Grill (ebbitt.com) is a stone’s throw from the White House and, dating back to 1856, billed as ‘the oldest saloon in Washington’. It’s vast, but the booths and dark decor give it a cosy, intimate feel. For the best views of the crowd - a lively mix of tourists and workers - take a pew at the bar. Beers from $6 (about £4.60), cocktails from $10.99 (about £8.50). And don’t forget your passport, as you’ll be asked for ID when ordering alcohol, however old you are. What to do Visitors are spoilt for choice where museums are concerned, but the one everyone’s talking about is the National Museum Of African American History & Culture (nmaahc.si.edu), which Obama opened last September. Collections housed in the striking building are broken down into culture, community and history galleries. A highlight has to be Muhammad Ali’s gown, gloves and bag. Entrance is free, but booking a time slot might mean avoiding the queues.

As remarkable as the Capitol is on the outside, it’s well worth booking one of the free tours at the Visitor’s Centre (visitthecapitol.gov), which is open between 8.30am and 4.30pm. The stunning Rotunda of the Capitol merits the neck-ache you’ll suffer from trying to take it all in. The National Statuary Hall - with its sculptures of notable American figures - is remarkable, and there’s also the option to watch Congress in session. Really, it’s a mystery why Washington isn’t more popular as a city break. It combines a sense of space with the cosmopolitan options you’d expect to find in New York. Then again, it means there’s more space for the rest of us to soak up everything DC has to offer. HOW TO CREATE YOUR VERY OWN BOUTIQUE HOTEL ROOM The new ‘it’ look for boudoirs There’s something to be said for the excitement of staying in a hotel. The fluffy pillows, crisp cotton sheets, access to miniature beverages and overpriced confectionary. Whatever it is, it’s a great feeling shutting the world out in a luxurious room. So, why not have a piece of the action in your own home? Well, we researched exactly how to replicate, turning to some of the best hotels in the world, along with some top interior designers, for advice.
Oversized headboards Whilst there are plenty of other trinkets and extras to write home about, the bed is the truly the main feature of any hotel room and the headboard is the lure of said feature. For a little while headboards became tiresome, but they are back and bigger than ever. Higher than ever, headboards are even as tall as the wall itself, but for a more modest at home look, go for roughly a third of the wall it backs onto. Bedside Tables Don’t underestimate the importance of the bedside table as a decorative element. Bedding The pinnacle moment of every great hotel stay (for me at least) is the first time you sink into a freshly made bed, it’s like unwrapping a gift. Despite the countless people who have stayed before me, I am always thrilled to peel back the layers of bedding and dive in and for a particularly luxurious feel there’s nothing quite like a thread-rich cotton cover. No matter the room’s theme or colour scheme, always opt for bright white bedding; particularly thread counts of 600 and above.
Pillows When my partner and I went bedroom shopping (he loves home ware trips) I became obsessed with the idea of plump – sink your face into – pillows. Personally, for a luxurious hotel feel, I love the squishiness and crackle of the duck feather, but I understand some people have reservations towards it, so there are some fantastic ‘feels like down’ polyester alternatives on the market that feel just as sumptuous. Whatever you opt for, ensure it is full with stuffing and super soft. This is definitely not an online purchase; pillows must be tried before buy-ed, well, bought. Lighting When staying away you want to be at your most relaxed and lighting has an enormous part to play in that feeling. Second to the door, the light switch is usually the first thing you reach for when entering a room. It usually takes around three on and offs before figure out which button works which light; you have your main light, your bedside light, the mood light and so on and so forth. Your bedroom lighting should follow suit, ideally a main light that floods the entire room, a light either side of the bed for ‘his and her’ options and some form of low level lighting for a moody effect. What style of lamp/ shade you decide on is dependent on the overall theme of the room, but the trick is to follow this rule; only one can be the focal point. For example, if you have on oversized chandelier, your bedside lamps should be smaller. Last lighting tip; opt for warm colored bulbs instead of bright white. Whilst the bright white is great for bright open spaces, your boutique hotel room should be atmospheric and cozy.

All the senses In addition to lighting, smell can also influence our enjoyment of a room. Be sure to grace the room with plenty of scented candles and reed diffusers. Rich, musky scents such as sandalwood, white musk, cedar and jasmine do well to create an opulent aroma. Whichever brand you opt for, look for these scent notes.
Finishing touches Depending on how committed (and willing to maintain the standards) you might be will effect how few or many little extras you decide to put in your room. For an easy, low maintenance option, toweling robes are a must – what hotel stay would be complete without them? Have them on display or hung from the back of a door, the rope tied into a bow. Another great little idea is getting your hands on an ornate French press coffee maker. Pop it on a tray along with some china cups and flowers and you have a great little hotel-esque touch. HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN SEASIDE GARDEN
Has the distant memory of summer holidays prompted you to create your own seaside garden ready for next summer? Here’s what to do and the plants which should thrive. Going on holiday to the coast may fuel dreams of a life by the seaside but creating a seaside garden needs careful thought, bearing in mind the salt spray, strong winds and dry soil. Here are a few ideas to get you started on your dream garden by the sea.

CREATE A WINDBREAK
You need a strong windbreak to minimise damage from the strong sea breezes, which will create shelter and help widen the choice of plant’s you’ll be able to grow.

Plant a hedge or wind-filtering barrier of trees or shrubs which are of good
depth, preferably planted in two or more staggered rows. Good species for this job include pine, alder, hawthorn and hornbeam. If you want to go for willow or poplar, keep them well away from buildings, as tree roots can cause damage to the fabric of buildings and the drains. Alternatively, you could go for a fence-like windbreak such as woven wattle or willow hurdles which are available from garden centres or local craftsmen. Have a look in the classified sections of any of the gardening magazines and you should find what you want.

CHECK OUT NEIGHBOURING GARDENS
Walk around the area and make a note of the plants which are thriving in neighbouring gardens, so you know what would do well in yours. Sea shells, nautical antiques, washedup timber, statues and even disused boats can be used ornamentally.

Perennials which can be grown in a seaside setting include achillea, crocosmia, eryngium (sea holly), echinops (globe thistle), sedum, heuchera (coral flower), euphorbia, gazania, scabiosa. Suitable shrubs and climbers include buddleia, berberis, genista (broom), cistus (rock rose), ceanothus, escallonia, weigela, hebe, lavatera, passiflora (passion flower), ribes (ornamental currant), rosmarinus (rosemary). Don’t forget rock plants Armeria maritima, aubrieta, alpinus, phlox subulata, osteospermum jucundum, karvinskianus, Iris pumila.

TEST YOUR SOIL
Buy a pH kit from your local garden centre. Many seaside gardens are high in alkaline because of the high calcium content of crushed sea shells. If you have alkaline soil, don’t plant lime-haters such as rhododendron or azalea, because they won’t do well. If your soil is sandy, beef it up with some organic matter to retain moisture and add nutrients. Once you have done this, mulch the area with compost or chipped bark to keep in the moisture.

NEW BMW X3 MODELS From December, a new fourcylinder petrol engine will be added to the BMW X3 range. In addition to BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the 2-litre power unit also boasts weightoptimised design and a new engine system for optimising acoustic characteristics and warm-up behavior. It comes as standard with the combination of an eightspeed Steptronic transmission and intelligent all-wheel drive technology, BMW xDrive. The engine featured in the new BMW X3 xDrive20i (£37,980) offers 184 hp, has a 0-60 mph time of 8.3 second, returns 39.8 mpg combined and has CO2 emission levels 163 g/km. Also from December, the first ever M Performance X3 will be available. It reaches 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, has a top speed of 155 mph and is priced at £48,950.It features eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with Launch Control.
ROAD TEST: DACIA SANDERO STEPWAY Dacia is a car brand founded in the 1960s but in 1999 it was taken over by the Renault Group which expanded its market across Europe and re-introduced it to the UK, writes NICK FLETCHER. Dacia uses proven Renault powertrains wrapped up in fresh-looking designs and with the emphasis on unmatchable value for money. I had to triple-check the prices before believing the Dacia Sandero Stepway, a smart-looking compact SUV, actually starts at just £5,995. Fair enough, that’s a basic version with minimal equipment but my mid-range Ambiance test model had remote locking, air-conditioning, roof rails, DAB radio, stop-start function, tinted glass, front fog lights, electric front windows, skid-plates, hill-start assist and ISOFIX points for child seats – yet still costs only £8,995. The Stepway is a visually-rugged version of the Sandero hatchback and has raised ride height,skid-plates and one or two other visual touches to make it attractive to those wanting to get in on the booming SUV market at a bargain price.
Yet the Stepway isn’t just about value for money. Its exterior styling is quite classy, its interior is surprisingly spacious, and its drives pleasingly enough to suit all but the most critical buyer. There are petrol and diesel engines and my test model had a 0.9 litre petrol unit with the standard 5-speed manual gearbox. The 0-60 mph time is 11.1 seconds, top speed 104 mph and the fuel economy a respectable 55.4 mpg combined. The Stepway had a light makeover a few months ago and now has a new frontal identity which features the design cues of its Duster stablemate, and chrome detailing outside, and in the cabin, add an eye-catching touch. Front and rear occupants get good head and leg room, and the 320 litre boot is larger than most rivals and can be boosted to 1,200 litres by dropping the split-fold rear seats, so top marks for practicality. The dashboard is laid out well for easy use and while cabin plastics are cheaper grade they still look presentable. And as if to underline that Dacia is far more than just a cut-price contender, the brand came fourth out of 34 for reliability in a Which? survey last year.

Maserati has unveiled its new GranTurismo and GranCabrio models, which are priced from £94,285 and £108,340 respectively. The original GranTurismo concept involved fitting a sophisticated race car engine into a luxurious, handcrafted saloon, which is what Maserati did in 1947 with the A6 1500, which was styled by Pininfarina. “Today’s GranTurismo models are direct descendants of this breakthrough innovation,” says Maserati. “They embody the irresistible allure of exotic Italian style combined with hardedged, race-bred performance”. Available in Sport and MC trim levels, the GranTurismo and GranCabrio both feature a 4.7-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine. Developed jointly by Ferrari and Maserati and handcrafted by Ferrari in Maranello, the engine produces 460 hp.

AUDI CARBON EDITIONS
ROAD TEST: TOYOTA RAV4 Toyota’s rugged RAV4 is well established in the SUV sales battle where it takes on very tough opposition, writes NICK FLETCHER. The RAV4 is more spacious than most, has the bonus of a full hybrid version, and its other ace card is the brand’s formidable reputation for durability and dependability. Price start at £24,765 and there is a good choice of petrol and diesels engines as well as the hybrid, and there is the option of 2WD or 4WD and manual or auto gearboxes. The latest model looks cool and sharp in a sector where visual kudos is a key factor, so the RAV4 is off to a good start. Inside, it is roomy and can take four tall adults with ease and a fifth at a squeeze, and the rear seats recline for extra comfort. At 501 litres the boot area is excellent and folding the rear seats can more than triple the space to 1,633 litres. Seating is comfortable and supportive and there are plenty of stowage places around the cabin. The designers seem to have put all the emphasis on functionality, so all the dials and controls are user-friendly, My test model was an upper-spec RAV4 Hybrid Excel, with all-wheel drive and powered by a 2.5 litre petrol engine and
electric motor giving 195 hp, with CVT auto gearbox. With a 0-60 mph time of 8.4 seconds it is quite nippy by class standards, and top speed is 112 mph. Fuel figure is 55.4 mpg combined. This version costs £33,975 and comes with 18-inch alloys, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, road sign assist, pre-collision system, auto lights and wipers, smart entry and push button start, powered tailgate, rear view camera, leather upholstery, front and rear parking sensors, sat-nav, Bluetooth and on-line connectivity among its long list of features. On the move the RAV4 proves smooth and assured, with a balanced suspension set-up and precise steering making the car well planted on the corners. Ride quality is very good even when the surface gets rough. The only adverse comment in my notebook was more tyre hum at motorway speeds than I expected. Toyota’s brand reliability is well-known and it is backed by a five-year warranty - better than that of most rivals. The RAV4 is not the cheapest in the sector but when you start listing its various plus-points, it becomes increasing hard to resist.
New Carbon Edition versions of latest Audi Sport models are now available as more highly specified alternatives to ‘standard’ cars. Carbon Edition versions of RS 4 Avant and RS 5 Coupé are available to order priced at £71,625 and £75,400 respectively. Additions include extensive carbon-fibre detailing, including full roof on RS 5, plus 20-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, RS sport exhaust, and RS matrix LED headlamps. A new 2.9 TFSI engine with 444hp delivers 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds (RS 4 Avant 4.1 seconds), and 155mph top speed which can be increased to 174mph. Standard specification includes quattro drive with rear sport differential, Audi Virtual Cockpit with RS-specific displays, MMI Navigation Plus, Audi connect infotainment services, RS sport suspension with Dynamic Ride Control, and driver safety and connectivity systems. Highlights from the safetyfocused features of all RS 4 and RS 5 variants include multicollision brake assist and the Audi Side Assist blindspot warning system. Customers can enhance protection even further by choosing option bundles including the Driver Assistance Pack and Tour and Parking Assistance Pack.
NEW HYUNDAI MODEL Hyundai has announced details of its new i30 N, which will go on sale in the UK in January, priced from £24,995. The i30 N is Hyundai’s first performance model under the Hyundai N sub-brand, and is engineered by Hyundai’s dedicated High Performance Vehicle Division. The i30 N is available in two specifications, i30 N and i30 N Performance. Both models continue with the i30’s already extensive list of standard equipment, whilst adding N specific interior and exterior equipment as well performance modifications. The i30 N features a host of standard equipment in line with the rest of the i30 range, including LED head and tail lights, Smart Adaptive Speed Control, Keyless Entry with Engine Start/Stop Button, 8” Touchscreen Satellite Navigation with Android Auto and Apple Car Play. i30 N also offers an array of performance equipment, including Torque Vectoring System and steering wheel mounted Drive Mode Buttons, where the driver can access and customise engine and suspension settings. Priced from £27,995, the i30 N Performance offers additional performance-specific equipment, including an additional 25 hp and Electronic Limited Slip Differential.

GENNARO CONTALDO’S SHARING HIS PASSION FOR FRESH FOOD AND GOOD COOKING Jamie Oliver’s ‘London dad’ has just republished his autobiographical cookbook, Gennaro’s Passione. “Would you like to taste some pasta?” Just two minutes after meeting Gennaro Contaldo at one of the London branches of Jamie’s Italian, he’s already being the perfect host. As it’s lunchtime, and yes, I am quite hungry, I gratefully accept, and he quickly dispatches a waiter with instructions to ask chef Valentino for “one pasta special of the day”, adding in that famous Italian lilt: “Ees for Gennaro”. The bubbly 68-year-old is universally loved by all the chefs he trains at Jamie’s Italian restaurants around the globe, and most of all by his protege, Jamie himself, who calls Gennaro his ‘London dad’. The feeling is mutual. “Oh my God, does Jamie do more than me, he goes round and round and round. He’s always in touch. At the end of the day, we are cooks, more than anything else. We love cooking.” It’s this passion for cooking and good food that Gennaro extols in his cookbook Passione (“kind of my biography”), named after the restaurant he ran in London in the early-Noughties. First published in 2003 - “that book put me on the map” - it’s now been lovingly updated with stories and photos from Gennaro’s childhood growing up on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. “I realised how beautiful it was when I left it. After two, maybe three years, I went back and when I reached my village [Minori], everything was ever so small and it was strange,” says the chef, who first left home to find his fortune in England as a young man of 20.
King Prawns & Crab with Garlic & Chilli (Serves 4)
In the books, he calls it a “free-range” childhood. The family had no fridge, so everything had to be fresh and they ate with the seasons. His father, a linen merchant, brought animals home he’d been given as payment by local farmers and did most of the cooking, while his mother, who he affectionately calls ‘a white witch’, sent him out to collect herbs from the mountains, which sparked a lifelong love of foraging (he boasts he can find wild rocket in central London). The pasta special arrives - squid-like calamarata with a pesto of roasted red peppers, garlic and chilli (“spice prolongs life”), with buffalo ricotta - and it’s the best thing I’ve ever tasted. “It’s kind of al dente, but it’s a little bit chewy because it’s fresh. Al dente means you chew longer, so you taste it and digest it better. You want to keep that flavour in your mouth longer, it’s like a glass of wine, it’s elegant, smooth.” When he first arrived in London, Gennaro worked as a kitchen porter for a hospital, to get a permit, and eventually ended up at his good friend Antonio Carluccio’s Neal Street Restaurant, where he met and mentored Jamie Oliver, before branching out on his own and opening Passione. He left the restaurant three years before it closed in 2009, a victim of the recession, to collaborate with Jamie on the Jamie’s Italian chain. “He is [like a son], he’s got exactly the same - even more - love, and cares and respects food and people, which is so important. I look up to him. My God, he can do it. And we film quite a lot, me and Jamie, we film a new programme which will come out next year. We go round Italy, meet all these beautiful Nonnas

[grandmothers] and try to discover these beautiful, almost lost recipes.” He has five of his own children, two with his current partner, and three from his previous marriage, and he’s not about to hang up his apron anytime soon. “This is what’s keeping me alive,” he says earnestly. “I have days when I think I’m too tired, but the minute I walk inside the kitchen, I feel 25. I believe another person like me is Jamie, he’s running around... to give lots of love to the world. And for me to come in the restaurant, and have a picture together with a young boy who’s been waiting months to see you, you give them such love and joy and you show them how to do something, you transfer a little tiny gene to him and he will find the same love and passion.” Gennaro’s Passione: The Classic Italian Cookery Book by Gennaro Contaldo is published in hardback by Pavilion, priced £20. Method Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan, add the prawns and cook for one minute over a high heat. Turn them over and cook the other side for another minute. Add the garlic, chillies and crab chunks, season with salt, then reduce the heat and cook for two minutes with the lid on.

Add the parsley, increase the heat and pour in the wine and any reserved juices from the crab. Bubble until evaporated, then serve immediately, with lemon quarters and lots of bread to mop up the juices.

2 baby chickens (poussins), boned) 6tbsp olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper
First make the filling by placing all the ingredients in a mortar and pounding them with a pestle until you obtain a pulp.
Turn up the heat under the chickens, add the sauce and simmer until reduced by half, stirring all the time.
For the filling: 2 garlic cloves, peeled 2tbsp capers 1tsp sea salt 2tsp extra virgin olive oil Needles from 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary A handful of chopped fresh parsley Freshly ground black pepper
Open up each baby chicken like a butterfly and place skin-side down on a chopping board. Spread the filling evenly over the flesh side, then fold the poussin back over and secure the opening with wooden toothpicks, weaving them in and out. Season all over with salt and pepper.
Arrange on a plate and pour over the sauce. Serve immediately, scattered with parsley, if wished.

Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan, add the chickens, then reduce the heat slightly and cook until golden brown on all sides. Cover the pan and cook gently for about 20 minutes, until the chickens are cooked through. Meanwhile, make the sauce. Place the garlic and rosemary in a mortar and pound with a pestle. Add the wine, vinegar, sugar and capers, and mix well. 149

300g fresh broad beans (shelled weight) 300g cherry tomatoes, quartered and deseeded 100ml extra virgin olive oil, plus a little extra to serve 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 20 fresh basil leaves, plus a few extra to garnish 1/2 red chilli, finely chopped (optional) 300g spaghetti 100g mild goat’s cheese, diced Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Blanch the broad beans in a large saucepan of lightly salted boiling water for one minute, drain, rinse in cold water and drain again.
Bring a large pan of lightly salted water to the boil and cook the spaghetti until al dente.
Slip the skins off the broad beans and set aside.
Drain and add to the tomato and broad bean mixture, together with the goat’s cheese.
Put the tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, basil, chilli (if using) and some salt and pepper in a large bowl and mix well. Then stir in the broad beans and leave to marinate while you cook the pasta.
Mix well and serve immediately, sprinkling some freshly ground black pepper, a drizzle of olive oil and a few basil leaves on top of each portion.

Our Skin is constantly on display and has the power to dictate exactly how good we are feeling about ourselves. Spending time and money on your skin is one of the best investments you will ever make – and I’m not talking breaking the bank – getting a monthly Facial and using the correct skincare products at home to maintain the results achieved in the Facial is achievable for everyone. October is Facial Month at Chic and I want to highlight the importance of good skincare and a regular Facial. You will see we use the word ‘customised’, that’s because every Facial that we do is different as we know every person’s skin is different and requires the use of different products and techniques to achieve maximum results. Facials are ideal once a month unless you have a specific skin concern such as Acne or Hyperpigmentation that may require a specific course of treatments. The reason for the 4 weekly visit is that your stratum corneum (the outer most layer of visible skin) will completely renew itself approximately every 28 days. In this time your skin cells are constantly being replicated (the treated cells replace the old cells). If you give your skin a head start (i.e. a great facial) your skin cells will begin to replicate the now healthier cells and therefore give you a better glowing complexion. I love a pampering. There’s something so soothing about paying the salon a visit in the hopes of emerging a-glow with confidence. This visit was a rendezvous at The Venue salon – one of our absolute favourites! Nails are your hands number one best accessories and every season a new must-have trend sweeps in. In an attempt to uncover this year’s Autumn/Winter looks, we asked the expert technicians at The Venue to give us the inside scoop. We arrived at The Venue one warm Wednesday afternoon. The last of the summer sun was beaming down, illuminating the elegant crisp white and dove grey shop front – calling us like two moths to an incredibly chic flame. The us, in this case, was myself and my partner in crime, ‘Vicky’. We pushed the door open to reveal the gorgeous salon. A grey and white canvas, enhanced with navy blue upholstery, uplifting greenery and plenty of sparkling silver flourishes gives the salon a truly decadent look. The waiting area is teaming with all the essentials; Vogue, I-pad, smoothie menu. Our technicians met us with smiling faces and led us to our own individual nail stations. As a habitual nail biter, Laura (my technician for the day) had her work cut out with me, though she showed no signs of wavering once she had seen my tiny talon. Which I might add, was a pleasant surprise, as I usually have to suffer a minimum of a two-minute lecture when I have been elsewhere – I’m an addict people, I’m beyond help. Rant over.

To my right, Vicky (with her beautiful natural nails) was being buffed and polished, chatting away with her incredibly friendly technician. For her on-trend autumnal look, she had recommended a voguish deep maroon colour, topped with a silver foil tip.

Laura was working away on manufacturing me some brand new nails, meticulously sculpting each and every one to an identical shape. My look was a growing trend strangely titled ‘Baby Boomers’, otherwise known as the ‘French Ombre’. A take on the classic French manicure, this adaptation offers a faded blend between the white and pink, as opposed to a clear shade and tip. Laura’s unique take was finished with a pearlescent topcoat, giving it a touch of subdued glamour, with just a hint of shimmer.
With our nails now officially dry, the girls lathered our cuticles with nourishing oil and we got the chance to marvel at our new sets. I was in love. This modern take on a classic technique was a dream, perfect for all occasions. Vicky was equally beaming with hers, pleased as punch with her dark and lustrous spurs.
