The BAPTAs (Bournemouth and Poole Tourism Awards) are proud to announce a brand-new category the ‘New Business of the Year Award’ for 2018. The award is sponsored by South West Regional Assess-ment Centre otherwise known as SWRAC. Have you started up a new business and want some recognition? Then enter the 2018 BAPTAs and be crowned the ‘New Business of the Year’! This new award is for businesses based in the BH post code area which have been launched and operating for 2 years or less from when the entries opened in October. Said Adrian Gunner from SWRAC, “This award has been created to celebrate new businesses that have an impact on
tourism. This is a great opportunity for new businesses to shine by entering the awards. These new businesses are part of the growth and investment and help the tourism and local economy and we feel it is important to identify these new businesses and welcome them as an integral part of the Tourism economy and ethos. Said Jackie Phillipson from ROUTEpr and BAPTA, “SWRAC do such a fantastic job here in the community and we are proud to see them involved with the awards and supporting the new business in tourism category.” Adrian Gunner from SWRAC adds, “Our role is to help people fulfil their potential within the society; we offer traineeships,
Saffery Champness Chartered Accountants hosted their 2017 post Autumn Budget breakfast at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth. They presented to a packed room of over 100 guests, representing businesses and the professional communities of Bournemouth and Poole. Saffery Partner, Nick Fernyhough opened the event. Commenting on the first Autumn Budget he said, “Is the age of austerity over? Is reducing the deficit not as important as we had been led to believe? This appears to be the message from a ‘borrow and spend’ Budget, but it’s not a message that the Government is vocalising.” Continuing Nick said, “We have a productivity conundrum – we’ve got virtually full employment, technological advances but no improvement in productivity. No one seems able to explain this, let alone solve it.
these might be. As accountants we cannot prepare accounts with such vague provisions.” Tax Director Ian Harlock-Smith discussed the increase in the Stamp Duty Land Tax threshold for first time buyers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and also gave a detailed insight into the changes to the “knowledge intensive” companies EIS/VCT rules and new antiavoidance measures that are designed to remove low risk investments from EIS. Chartered Surveyor Simon Tubbs of Cowling & West said, “The announcement on the abolition of Stamp Duty for first time buyers will be positively received although I would have concerns that this may only increase demand in a market whose real issue is a lack of supply. The underlying problem, in my opinion, is this lack of supply and whilst a commitment to build 300,000 new homes is a positive measure the Chancellor also stated that this would not be achieved until the mid-2020’s.” Simon added, “The Chancellor also enhanced and extended reliefs for Business Rates to reduce the hardship

caused by the latest revaluation although in my opinion the complex nature of the current Appeals System remains a primary concern.” Director of Real Recruitment Solutions, Jacqueline Entwistle commented, “From a business perspective the Budget does not have any significant impact on me. It’s a shame, however, that the Government didn’t reduce Stamp Duty for all as I think that this would have had a positive impact on the housing market.” Nick concluded, “We’ve been delighted at the high turnout today. Even though the Budget wasn’t packed with immediate changes, Alex and Ian gave very useful insight and a resume of the direction of travel that HMRC are on for the future. It was good to hear questions from the audience.” Visit www.saffery.com for more information or see Twitter: @Safferys.

DON’T LET EMBARRASSMENT GET IN THE WAY OF HEALTH
TREE-CYCLE FOR CHARITY Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, is once again running its successful tree-cycling scheme to help the local community recycle their Christmas trees while raising funds to support children and adults living with disabilities in Dorset.
Two common, somewhat harder to discuss diseases in men are testicular and prostate cancer. Both cancers affect different age groups but share very high survival rates. Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital consultant urologist, Andrew Wedderburn explains why you can’t afford to let embarrassment delay your visit to a GP. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer for men in their mid-20s and 30s. It typically presents as a small hard lump or swelling in the testicle however, it is important to note that only 10 to 20 per cent of scrotal or testicular lumps detected are cancerous. Testicular cancers are reasonably fast growing. When booking an appointment with your GP or urologist, mention a lump has been found. Testicular cancer in men older than 45 is extremely rare, however the risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age. In older men it is much more frequently found. Often symptom free,
prostate cancer is usually detected through a routine PSA check, which is a blood test that measures the amount of prostate specific antigen in your blood. If you are experiencing symptoms or have concerns, please don’t let embarrassment delay you from making an appointment with your GP. Consultant urologist Mr Andrew Wedderburn has a weekly clinic at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital. Those interested in an appointment are invited to call the Nuffield team on 01202 375032.
SAVILLS SUNFLOWER COMPETITION Savills Canford Cliffs were delighted to award the children from year 1 and 2 from Lilliput C.E Infant School with their certificates and a prizes for the winning entries in this year’s Savills Sunflower competition. The Savills office gave the children the sunflower seeds earlier in the summer. They then grew the flowers and took photographs of them for the office to judge, with a prize awarded for the most attractive Sunflower. Sabrina Bodley and Carol Mather went along to the School to present the certificates and prizes to the winners. Sabrina Bodley, Associate at the Savills Canford Cliffs office said: “It was a very
difficult decision to judge the entries, as all the children had done very well. We thoroughly enjoyed organising the competition and are very pleased to support the School and children’s interest in nature.”
The initiative will be taking place on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 January, where residents in Poole, Bournemouth and East Dorset can have their Christmas tree collected in exchange for a donation, all in the name of charity. Diverse Abilities is asking for a minimum donation of £5 and your tree will be collected over the first weekend of January. All you need to do is book via Diverse Abilities, leave your tree outside your home and they will collect hassle free. To book your collection and find out more visit www.diverseabilities.org. uk/trees or call 01202 718266. If you would like to volunteer and help Diverse Abilities to collect trees or lend the charity a van over the weekend, please get in touch with nicole. warrilow@diverseabilities. org.uk Diverse Abilities would be extremely grateful to anyone who contributes. Collectors play a pivotal role in ensuring that the scheme runs smoothly and that the pre-booked trees are collected promptly.

NEWS COLEMAN INSURANCE BROKERS HOST CYBER RISK SEMINAR The latest news stories in your area.
WINE AND PORT TASTING EXPERIENCE AT FLEUR-DELIS, POUND The number one retirement development, Fleur-de-lis, Pound Lane in Wareham will be opening its doors once more and celebrating Christmas by hosting another fascinating FREE event. On Wednesday 6th December from 1pm – 3pm, they will be holding a wine and port tasting experience (provided by ‘The Naked Grape company’) and to run alongside they will have canapes provided by a local business ‘The Salt Pig’. There are a limited number of places available. It’s a great opportunity to come along and meet some of the local residents and to sample some of the local produce. To secure your place please call 01929 554557.
Coleman Insurance Brokers hosted a Cyber Risk Seminar and presented to a packed room of attendees at the RNLI Head Quarters in Poole. 25 local businesses attended the event which aimed to increase awareness of the different types of cyber risks that businesses face and how cyber insurance can protect and support businesses in the event of a cyber breach. Examples were shared of real life cyber incidents that have occurred in recent months. The popular seminar also sought to dispel common misplaced cyber myths and covered the upcoming changes to data legislation with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Presenting were Spencer Coughlin, Commercial Manager at Coleman Insurance Brokers and Richard Kelly, Senior Technology Underwriter at Hiscox. Spencer grabbed attention with some shocking statistics; in 2016 3 million British businesses were compromised by cyberattacks, UK business were, on average, subjected to almost 230,000 cyber-attacks each and, for the first time, the volume of attacks hitting individual company firewalls passed the 1,000 per day mark, on average. Detailing breaches at high profile companies such as Debenhams, Wonga,
Equifax and CEX-LP, with customer records compromised standing at 26,000, 250,000, 700,000 and 2,000,000 respectively, Spencer warned the audience, “Don’t bury your head in the sand when you hear of another high profile cyber-attack, thinking ‘it won’t happen to us’. SME businesses are as vulnerable, if not more vulnerable, than the larger organisations.” Dispelling common cyber myths, Spencer talked about use of the cloud for data storage and pointed out that storing data in the cloud does not absolve a business from their responsibilities. Richard started with an interactive cyber quiz to challenge the audience’s understanding of the risks that cyber breaches posed. He discussed the upcoming GDPR changes which will impact on all business in 2018 and hi-lighted how proving liability for data leaks and breaches will change – the burden of proof will shift and individuals claiming damages will no longer need to prove their losses, only the emotional impact. He urged businesses to be aware of the costs that they might incur should a cyber breach take place and the potential reputational damage that a business is exposed to.
Diverse Abilities celebrated raising £82,000 at its annual gala ball, held at Poole Lighthouse, which was raising funds for the vital services the charity runs to support children and adults living with disabilities in Dorset, and their families.
Established in 1928, with roots going back to 1903, Coleman is one of the UK’s longest established, truly independent insurance brokers, employing some 60 staff at locations in Poole and Exeter. thecolemangroup.co.uk
they walked in on the red carpet until carriages arrived at 1am. Guests enjoyed a drinks reception before entering the magical ballroom through a doorway filled with fur coats, snow and trees. The Snow Queen and Mr Tumnus surprised those in attendance with a mystical performance before the threecourse meal and wine was served. The monies raised at the gala ball, and other events Diverse Abilities run every year, has a huge impact on the children, adults and families the charity supports.

“Ransomware attacks made the press recently after it affected 42 NHS trusts, Renault and FedEx. Hackers are getting much more sophisticated, carrying out research on their victims. They are utilising social media such as Facebook and Linked-in profiles to assist them in creating believable correspondence, enticing victims to open up a file which contains a virus.”
OVER £80,000 RAISED AT DIVERSE ABILITIES NARNIA THEMED GALA BALL
The Narnia themed gala ball was an extraordinary evening with over 450 people attending the event. Adults and families the charity supports, Diverse Abilities staff, sponsors and other members of the local community had an unforgettable time from the moment

Hi-lighting the different types of risks businesses face, Richard stated that Ransomware is the most common claim being made currently. Spencer agreed commenting, “Ransomware is at epidemic levels and cyber criminals are focusing on businesses of any shape or size.
Without the help of the local community, Diverse Abilities could not run its services and make a difference to those it cares for, providing children and adults a future they deserve and being a lifeline to parents. APPLE HOME IMPROVEMENTS In With The New
Modern Bespoke Conservatories Conservatories are most often a gateway to your garden, a room filled with natural light that is a pleasant retreat during summer days, bringing the outdoors in. But what about the rest of the year? Modern bespoke conservatories offer a very attractive solution to extending your home, creating a versatile, yet stylish, space. While remaining a summer sanctuary, your modern conservatory can be enjoyed all year round with some innovative design and thermally efficient roofing options.
It’s All About The Roof This bespoke design sets out to deliver a conservatory that looks more like a solid room from the inside, but is still bathed in plenty of natural light. In constructing a lightweight roof that is part solid, and part glass, you gain back full use of the space come rain or shine. The configuration of solid and glazed sections of the roof is a key part of the design. Arranging the position and number of glazed sections determines where and how much light enters the space, with consideration of how much solid ceiling area there will be, with a sleek plastered finish.
Instead of being a space that you just clear out in the spring (and dust down the cane furniture), a modern bespoke conservatory can be integral to your home all year round as a living space, dining area, games room, home office or studio.
As the roof is lightweight, a conservatory frame is able to take the load and is made thermally efficient by the high-density insulation between the interior solid finish and external polycarbonate panels. The glazed sections are made up of
specially selected, A-rated doubleglazing that utilises coated low-E glass to control solar heat. With this type of modern roof solution conservatories are cooler in the summer and much more efficiently heated in colder months. Doors Another important element of bespoke conservatory design is the type of doors. Your choice of doors will largely depend on what they open out upon. To maximise synergy between room and garden, bi-folding doors are a popular choice, allowing for the space to be opened out completely to stunning effect. Where multiple exits are required, patio or French doors are a more practical solution with equal style.
12
No matter which Apple door solution is chosen for the project, they will naturally be thermally efficient and will have excellent security features.

ASK THE INTERIOR DESIGN EXPERT...
COLOUR
Katie Thomas, Design Director, KTM Design As the lead designer at KTM Design, I work on the interior design of all sorts of spaces across the UK. From vibrant offices that give businesses that winning edge, to sophisticated cocktail bars, to houses that deserve a new lease of life.
ASK THE EXPERT ABOUT...
HOW TO CHOOSE STORAGE Steve Webber, Director of Maidmans Moving & Storage Steve has many years’ experience in the moving and storage industry. Mrs P, of Poole asked, “What should I consider when choosing storage?” Steve replied: “Make sure storage meets your needs, otherwise you could end up with something that is unsuitable or not cost effective. The two types of storage to consider are containerised storage and self-storage. Containerised storage is often cheaper, but you must weigh this up against a lack of access to your belongings”.
Regardless of the type of space or project requirements, there is always one thing that seems to puzzle clients the most. Colour. It is most prominent with residential clients, whether I am helping them prepare their home for sale or redesigning their home for personal use. The most important thing is to not let colour scare you. By using my top tips and following a few simple rules, your colour nightmares will vanish. And if they don’t, feel free to call the number below! When choosing a background colour for a room, consider how much light the room gets. Bear in mind that if the room faces north, colours in it will appear ‘colder’ than in a south-facing room. Use pale colours to push the walls of a small room backwards and make it appear bigger. In contrast, dark colours make the walls feel like they are closing in on you. This is great if you want to make a large space feel cosier, but must be avoided if you’re trying to increase a sense of space. In a small home, use a palette of tonal colours – colours that are only
Steve added, “consider the following points before choosing storage: Location - For regular access to stored belongings, using a facility 50-miles away makes little sense. But, if you will not need access, you may save money using containerised storage outside of your immediate location. Access - Not every self-storage facility is open 24 hours a day, but for most people normal weekday access or access on demand will suffice.
marginally lighter or darker than each other – to help the space feel bigger. The boundaries between each room will appear to melt away giving the impression of space. By painting each room a completely different colour, small rooms will feel even smaller. Once you have decided on your colour, buy test pots to do a patch test. Create a test swatch by painting on large sheets on plain paper to put against your walls. Look at the swatches throughout the day as the daylight changes and place them in different parts of the room to ensure you are happy with the colour at its lightest and darkest.
Facilities – Security is paramount, including lockable access and cameras. Consider fire protection and insurance. Lastly, don’t underestimate good customer service, Maidmans, storage solutions are rated as highly by clients as the moving side of our business”.
Do you have a question for Steve? Send it to steve.webber@maidmans.com or use the contact details below
Finally, start adding contrast, texture, layers and accents through the furnishings and accessories. Now you can start bringing in pattern! Creative care Great Oaks care home in Bournemouth strives to boost each resident’s wellbeing, happiness and quality of life through engaging and personalised activities.
G
reat Oaks is situated in a peaceful, private woodland setting in Bournemouth. It is the third residential, nursing and dementia care home in the South of England from Encore, which specialises in modern, purpose built, private care homes. The growing family of homes includes the much-anticipated Fairmile Grange in Christchurch, which opened last December in partnership with the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Encore’s Hamble Heights in Fareham opened its doors in 2013 and has since achieved a number of awards; one of which is Best Activites Coordinator for the South West in the 2016 Great British Care Awards. Encore is dedicated to the care and wellbeing of residents and its teams pride themselves on bringing smiles to residents’ faces every day.
Great Oaks, the brand new care home in Bournemouth, is no exception. The dedicated team has been taking every opportunity to get to know the residents with engaging, creative and personalised activities. Daily pastimes and interests are planned at Great Oaks to ensure that a variety of engaging activities are always on offer for residents if they wish to get involved. Such activities include gardening, dancing, trips out with friends and pet therapy sessions. Entertainers are also regularly invited into the home for dance and music sessions. Smuggler is the first pet at Great Oaks and was donated to the care home by Eve, a nurse from Hamble Heights care home. Residents were given the opportunity to name the new budgerigar and ‘Smuggler’ won by a unanimous decision.
FESTIVE RESIDENTIAL OPEN DAY • EVERYONE WELCOME •
Smuggler has now been introduced as part of Great Oaks’ pet therapy sessions. This includes visits to the home by sibling Shih Tzus, Frankie and Harry, as well an array of animals brought in by The Creature Teachers, which specialises in facilitating this special experience in care homes. Sue Goktas, dedicated Activities Manager of Great Oaks, said: ‘‘We believe that visits from our furry friends have a really positive impact on our residents’ wellbeing, especially those living with dementia. We have seen that having a pet for company can trigger positive memories for our residents, as well as evoking a feeling of calm. Research shows that holding and petting the animals can lower the heart rate, reduce blood pressure and really boost your mood.”

HOLIDAY HOME OWNERSHIP Simon Tolson
LATE LIFE CRISIS MARKETING - PADDING THE SHOULDERS My current stage in life makes me my own perfect customer I had a special moment this week when you realise that you are part of an older generation. Circumstances caused me to break into a chorus of ‘Gordon is a moron’ (I was so upset that I cried all the way to the chip shop etc). Most of the office stared at me blankly as I suspect many readers are frowning at the moment thinking I’ve really lost the plot! ‘You know jilted John by Jilted John - it was a hit in… hang on I’ll just look it up… 1978’. The crew looked at me with sympathy and one said ‘Simon my mum was 14 so no I don’t remember it.’ Somehow the time has flashed past and both my sons have left uni and even more incredibly neither has moved back home so like, a number of my friends, I’m creeping into a late life crisis. There was consternation in the office recently when one of the ladies opened a package that turned out to be a pair of extra large lycra pants yes I have become a MAMIL (middle aged man in lycra) as I finally get
round to trying to undo what running a business and bringing up a family has done to my body. What is clear is that I am now a member of one of my own most sought after customer groups - sure the families arriving for the school holidays spend the most but the battle for a good year’s rental figures is won and lost in the shoulder periods. ‘Padding your shoulders’ in our business is not dressing up for a retro 80’s night but filling up May, June, September & October at the best price. This is what makes the difference between a mediocre year and a great one and so it’s this market that we really need to concentrate on. Whilst there are of course parties of ladies who lunch and blokes on kite surfing trips, in general this is a couples market and broadly speaking we can divide this group into three categories, pre-children, with toddlers & kids left home.
The baby & toddler crew are perhaps the most straightforward to think about. Unfortunately, some things that they look for you can’t control parking, being close to a beach etc, but you can make them feel as welcome as possible by supplying good quality cot, highchair and stairgates, making gardens safe and by making it clear that they are welcome. Doesn’t hurt to highlight the nearest ice cream shop and family friendly pub and a box of toys and plenty of dvds will provide lots of fun for very little cost. With pre-children couples, you are competing against a hotel room as well as other cottages and this can make a cottage look expensive for a weekend. One of the key reasons a couple may choose to come to a cottage is that they have a dog. There are lots of ‘just for two’ properties that have been renovated to a very high standard but by definition many won’t take a dog. We see really high occupancy in places for two and a dog so do consider this if you have the opportunity half a dozen extra bookings will pay for a lot of cleaning! Finally, we come to my own cohort of middle aged people with kids grown up or at least at uni or can be left behind. We like our space and will often look at larger properties for our own holidays and there’s fewer kids being taken out of school nowadays so we represent a good opportunity to sell some weeks in 3 or 4 bedroom places out of term time. Whilst I don’t have to worry about how good a hair dryer is supplied, this group of
customers will have a good standard of things in their own home and won’t want to compromise on holiday. Also there are lots of dog owners in this group as they fill the void left by the departed offspring. The fall in the value of the pound gives us the opportunity to pick up bookings from those who might have nipped across to Spain or France in the spring and autumn and the key here is to paint a picture of a great week in Sandbanks for the slightly energetic and affluent: Enjoy a wellearned sharpener in the Haven Hotel after a vigorous walk on the coastal path then sit down for superb meal at Rick Stein’s before walking back to your apartment. Watch the sun rise from the panoramic windows of your super home. In all of these cases the guest will often have plenty of choice as there will be availability everywhere so as usual you have to think hard about giving a reason to choose you. Price is always the biggest factor but make sure you have the fastest internet you can get, a decent sized TV and chuck out your chintz! NEW INSTRUCTION A period country manor with panoramic views
ARNE, ISLE OF PURBECK
CHRISTMAS 21 - 28 December £3,900; NEW YEAR 29th December - 2nd January £3,900 st
th
Arne House is a period country manor set in large, private landscaped grounds. The grounds are terraced and at the highest point boasts panoramic views of Poole Harbour, Brownsea Island, Sandbanks and Corfe Castle. Arne House is a period, turreted country manor house, believed to have been built around 1880 as a hunting lodge for the first Baron Rockley, and is set in the hamlet of Arne on the Isle of Purbeck. The grounds are terraced and at the highest point boasts panoramic views of Poole Harbour, Brownsea, Green and Long Islands along with Sandbanks, Corfe Castle and the Isle of Wight. The well planned and versatile accommodation measures over 6,000 sq ft and is set within around 5 acres. The house is in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the Jurassic coastline and within walking distance of sandy beaches. The long, sweeping drive reaches the large gravel parking area in front of this elegant house and so Arne House is wonderfully private. Arne nature reserve is just a short walk away so the area is quiet, unspoilt and full of wildlife. Arne House has 7 bedrooms and sleeps up to 14 and with its elegant accommodation, beautifully kept grounds and idyllic setting is perfect for a holiday by the sea. Ground Floor: The grand, welcoming hall leads to the drawing room and also through Victorian Gothic Purbeck Stone arches to the impressive dining room
with a feature fireplace and a solid wooden table that seats up to 16. Beyond this is the contemporary kitchen/breakfast room and family room with super coastal views. There is also a games room/office with cinema screen, a generously sized laundry room. First Floor: Upstairs, the impressive semi-circular staircase opens up to a large open plan gallery with striking floor to ceiling windows. The very generous master bedroom has the most spectacular coastal views, an en-suite bathroom with a separate shower and a dressing room. There are six further bedrooms, two of which also enjoy coastal views, a family bathroom and also two further shower rooms one of which is en-suite providing an ideal guest suite. Second Floor: On the second floor is a playroom which is an ideal space for children to read books and play. Outside: The gardens and grounds are imaginatively landscaped with strategically positioned terraces to enjoy the setting and views, lawns, various mature trees, shrubs and plants. The garden also boasts a hot tub, outdoor sauna and a barbeque lodge with seating for up to 20. There is driveway parking for numerous cars. Arne House is beautifully presented and would be a wonderful location for a large group holiday or special occasion.

TALKING BUSINESS
HOUSE TALKS BUSINESS WITH...
BUZZY CLEANERS As we edge to the end of 2017, Buzzy Cleaners is proud to announce a smashing new collaboration with HRG Services – the local experts in lifestyle management, to period homeowners. We sat down with Jo (Founder, Buzzy Cleaners) to find out more about the merge, and how the company has gone from strength to strength in the last year. So, tell us about your latest collaboration? HRG are a bespoke property and lifestyle management company specialising in services for period homeowners. With their team of trustworthy local experts, they can assist on all manner of specialised restoration, decoration and other lifestyle services. As part of their new concierge service, we have joined forces to offer a top-class cleaning service to their clients. It’s a whole new ball game as homes of such stature require an even more considered approach, but as we do with all our jobs, we take what we do very seriously and make it our mission to produce great results. What led you to set up Buzzy Cleaners in the first place? I felt there was a gap in the market for eco-friendly cleaners. I have had my business for over two years now, since March 2015. I started alone then built up my now team of eight marvelous cleaners. I am very ambitious and always aim to make people happy. As a single mum with a seven-year-old daughter, I completely sympathize with those who have a lack of free time, so I thought to myself, “how can I help?”.
52
How has the last year been for Buzzy? We are so happy, and grateful, to have been inundated with new commercial and residential clients and have made some incredible connections
along the way, much like our most recent with HRG Services. For any readers, who might not be familiar with you, could you remind us what aspects of cleaning do you cover? Predominately domestic and commercial; home, offices, holiday lets and of course Airbnb rentals. We do also specialise in post-build cleans and contract cleans, as well as one-offs and end of tenancy cleans. Anything and everything to be honest! Take us through the Buzzy cleaning process… I always meet the client first and introduce my business. I look around the home, or indeed office, and then go through the requirements. Before any contracts are signed, I’ll book in the first clean, if they’re happy we can sign on the line and hopefully continue going forward with a regular (as is required) clean. If the client wishes to meet their specific cleaner first this can be arranged too. What makes you guys unique? We have exceptionally high-standards and a great eye for detail and continuity. We are a happy, fun team that you can rely on. All of my cleaners are vetted, trained, experienced and fully uniformed. You mentioned Airbnb, could you explain how you can help? Airbnb is a global holiday letting service and it’s growing fast, particularly in Dorset and along the South Coast. It’s a chambermaid service, possibly with two clients a day – one checking-out in the morning and one checking-in in the afternoon – so it’s a quick turn around. And now with our recent partnership with HRG Services, we can offer an even more extensive service!
I understand you are big on being eco-friendly? Absolutely, being eco-friendly is a huge part of our day-to-day lives and we want our business to be as green conscious as possible. All of our products are supplied by ‘Ecover’; environmentally friendly products that our clients love! Not only are we looking after the environment, but furthermore we’re looking after the health of our client’s family, pets and their beautiful furnishings. Our products are totally toxin-free and work twice as well as your harsh household detergents. Buzzy Cleaners offer services to all property management services, achieving flawless cleaning results each and every time.

DO YOU OWN A BUY-TO-LET?
3 reasons why you might need to review your mortgage Over the past 12 months, there have been many changes in the market that will impact buy-to-let landlords with mortgages. Whether you have one or 10 investment properties and regardless of how hands on you are, here are just three reasons why it could be time to review your mortgage and restructure your portfolio. REASON #1 - INTEREST RATE RISE Earlier this month, the Bank of England increased the base rate from 0.25% to 0.5% for the first time in a decade. This is expected to increase mortgage payments for both home owners and buy-to-let investors almost immediately. For those on variable rate and tracker products and anyone with fixed-rate products could be in for a more expensive deal when their current one comes to an end. While the financial impact is likely to be minimal for many property owners - approximately £200 per year on average for every £100,000 borrowed – forecasts suggest that there could be two more interest rate rises in the next three years*. The good news is that many lenders will be working on launching new
competitive products to entice borrowers who feel like now is the time to review their current mortgage. As it stands, many lenders are still offering two-year fixed rates under 2%. REASON #2 – REMOVAL OF MORTGAGE INTEREST TAX RELIEF In the 2015 Summer Budget, it was announced that private landlords (who own properties in their individual names) will no longer be able to deduct 100% of their finance costs, including mortgage interest, as an expense before calculating their taxable income. Known as the Tenant Tax, or formally Section 24 of the Finance Act (No. 2) 2015, it means that from the tax year beginning April 2017, landlords will gradually see their tax bill rise as the changes are phased in. By 2020, tax relief on finance costs will be restricted to the basic rate of tax. The following tables show in simple terms how this could affect landlords who are basic rate tax payers and higher rate tax payers before Section 24 and once it is fully implemented by 2020.
PRE-SECTION 24
Basic rate tax payer
Higher rate tax payer

Tax payable
£1,000
£2,800
As the tables show, profit will now be calculated before any mortgage interest costs are deducted, artificially inflating it to £9,000. Only then can the 20% relief be applied. Higher rate tax payers will therefore see an immediate increase in their tax bill by the time Section 24 is fully implemented in 2020. And while it seems that lower rate tax payers will see no change to their tax bill, it could push millions of people into the higher rate bracket. For example, by 2020, the higher rate threshold will be £50,000. If someone earns £43,000, then under the old system, their £5,000 profit from buy-to-let would keep them in the lower rate bracket. In future, the higher figure of £9,000 will be used to calculate their total income, which will increase to £52,000. REASON #3 - NEW PRA REGULATIONS In response to Section 24, the Prudential Regulatory Authority (PRA) last year recommended increased stress testing on buy-to-let mortgages. Generally, lenders based these on 125% rental cover and a 5% interest rate but these have now been formalised and increased to 145% and 5.5% respectively.
This means that even if the lender is only lending on one property, they will need to ensure that the portfolio is performing well on average and is likely to take into account total buy-to-let mortgage borrowing, total rental income and ask for a written business plan. HERE TO HELP Fortunately, by effective financial planning and implementing the right business structure, the impact on you and your portfolio can be minimised. At Bluechip Financial, we have been advising landlords for over 10 years and there isn’t anything about buyto-let borrowing that we haven’t found a solution for. If you’d like support and guidance on how these changes will affect you and how they can be mitigated, we’d be happy to review your current circumstances and can advise on the options for cost effectively restructuring your borrowing in line with your personal and portfolio goals. Please contact one of our professional advisers now for a free consultation. In laymen terms, if you wanted to borrow £100,000 for a buy-to-let mortgage, you would have needed to achieve a monthly rental income of £521. Now, it is more likely that lenders will require a monthly rental income of £665.
home or property. Your home or property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage or any other debt secured on it. Information is based on our current understanding of taxation legislation and regulations. Any levels and bases of, and reliefs from taxation are subject to change.
Then in October this year, the PRA introduced new underwriting standards that require lenders to assess the performance of an entire buy-to-let portfolio where a landlord has four or more rental properties.

CHARMINSTER £295,000
A sale has been agreed on this town centre studio flat, within walking distance to the new BH2 leisure complex. It benefits from a modern kitchen, bathroom and good sized living area. Both buyer and seller are happy with the agreed price and the sale is moving forward smoothly.
The two bedroom house itself was a great home to buy, because it had amazing interiors, beautiful garden and spacious rooms. We helped smooth the selling process by liaising between solicitors, keeping buyer and seller communications open and making sure we are all “singing off the same hymn sheet”.
I contacted Fahren Estate Agents to sell my apartment in Bournemouth. I followed some low cost decor tips from Nick which must have done the trick because Fahren’s sold my flat within 2 weeks. Nick and Julian are so professional and friendly, I felt completely confident with them. Thank you chaps for a quick, efficient and successful sale! - Susie

Enjoy the retirement you’ve always dreamed of...
The benefits of Equity Release • Provides tax free cash or income – equity release helps support you financially throughout retirement, enabling you to spend the proceeds on anything to make life that ‘little more enjoyable’. • No monthly payments are required - most lifetime mortgages & all home reversion plans have little impact on your budget, as the lenders require no monthly payments towards the interest charged. • Right to remain in your home - under ERC rules this feature enables you live in your home rent free for the rest of your life. This will be either until the last person has died or moved into long term care. • A no-negative equity guarantee - provides the assurance that no matter what, with roll-up equity release schemes, you can never end up owing more than the value of the property. • Highly regulated financial products - the industry trade body ERC sets equity release standards and the FCA regulates. Lifetime mortgage & home reversion schemes have utmost consumer protection.

YOUR HOME FOR
RENEWABLE ENERGY HEATING SOLUTIONS Italian designed, state of the art pellet stoves, all the charm of wood with the ultimate convenience of pellets. Smart phone app or remote controlled with auto ignition and programming.
Move over dirty old wood fire, the future is here. It’s time for pellets to shine. The quintessential english wood stove has been given a very large shove into the 21st century with the introduction of indulgent Italian designed pellet fires. This season’s ‘on trend’ gadgets are the highly impressive pellet stoves or fireplaces from Italian company MCZ supplied through local company Green Square, with branches across Southern England, with your local branch in Christchurch High Street. Forget dirty old wood stoves that need filling every half an hour and cleaning every day just to get that real wood glow and warm feeling you can only get from a stove. Pellet stoves are here and the benefits over the traditional stoves are extensive. Wood pellet fires or stoves use real wood pellets derived only from sustainable sources to ensure you get a real wood fire flame. Pellets are loaded into the stove through the top into a chamber big enough to keep the fire buring for around 20 hours. Ignition is automatic, so no need to get the newspaper and matches out, in fact the stove can be controlled from your arm chair via the supplied remote control or via a smartphone app. Furthermore the stove can be programmed to turn on and off automatically in the same way as your gas boiler at home.
033 33 707 707 www.greensquare.co.uk
Cleaning is simple and only needed when the ash tray is getting full, often this can take weeks. The green credentials are also impressive, being over 90% efficient they are around twice as efficient as a wood stove. Pellets are delivered in bags to avoid dust and ease of storeage and are available via delivery to your front door. Installation is quick and easy, with installation into exisitng fireplaces or into other areas without a chimney such as kitchens, open plan rooms and conservatories. These stunning designer ‘award winning’ stoves are the future of fireplaces in England, why not be amongst the first to move into the 21st century and keep one step ahead.

Diary of Award Winning Sales and Letting Agent Move On Sharon Canning
WHAT IS YOUR EXIT STRATEGY? Many investors, have some sort of exit strategy in their head. Many landlords who own multiple properties started their journey with the exit in mind.
‘I want 10 buy to let properties and when I retire, the plan is to sell a couple to pay off some of the mortgages, sell a couple more for a lump sum to travel and have fun and the remaining five to be my pension.’ How many of you started with the above in mind? Now, it could be you didn’t reach 10, you may have bought five, with the 2008 crash this had an impact on many landlords. 2 possible spanners in the plan above. 1. The lovely Section 24, which some landlords are still not aware of (as of this year, BTL mortgages will not be tax deductable, starting with 25% this year to 100% of the mortgage in 2020) 2. The other is Capital Gains Tax. This is why I asked, ‘What is your exit strategy’? Most landlords have mortgages in their own name (versus in a company) and many do not have a mortgage at all. So, selling more than one property in any one financial year, would want to be avoidable!
I HAVE A PLAN! I am looking for landlords who wish to sell their properties in the next 5-10 years - the exit plan! I have tenants who want to buy a property in 5-10 years. My plan is to match you up, with great incentives on both sides.
Margaret, 75, living with cancer My day didn’t start too well. Everything had got on top of me and I felt really low. When I called the Macmillan Support Line, I didn’t know where to start. But somehow they helped me find the words. Just talking honestly about how I felt was such a relief. Now I don't have to cope with the bad days on my own.

SWISS SLOPES ARE NO SWIZZ Leonardo DiCaprio, Jude Law, and Bono are names that pop up during discussions of celebrities who regularly ski in the Swiss ski resort of Verbier, known for it’s excellent slopes, exclusivity and famous clientele. I’ve come here to see if it’s possible to enjoy Verbier on a more modest budget than the likes of Prince Harry might have at their disposal. “This is the Diana Ross lift,” our instructor Alex says, as we scale a mountain looking down on postcardworthy views of the snowy peaks of the Swiss Alps. Singer James Blunt also has a lift named after him. He may not be very famous in the UK these days, but he owns a chalet here and is well known to the locals. Even though the Beckhams, Jamie Oliver, and Pippa Middleton are said to ski here, it seems I’m in a bizarre parallel universe where James Blunt is practically royalty. But there’s a reason why big stars, and Blunt, make Verbier their skiing base. Part of Switzerland’s largest ski area, the 4 Vallees, there are 144 runs spread over 400km, connections to resorts including La Tzoumaz and Nendaz, and an altitude that guarantees an
abundance of snowfall even in early season. The resort is south-facing and therefore sun-drenched if the weather allows, making the views as spectacular as they come. Having skied mainly in France and across the Atlantic, I’m keen to see how the Swiss slopes compare. What’s most surprising in January is the lack of skiers and snowboarders around. Queues for lifts are rare and many of the runs are practically empty as we slice down the mountain as quickly or as leisurely as we like. It’s also clear that the variety means it caters for everyone, from pure beginners to serious Alpine junkies. Mont Fort - the area’s highest peak at 3,330 metres - has panoramic views over the Alps, where you can see the peaks of Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn. The legendary run from the peak is well-known as a challenge for even the most seasoned of skiers. It’s accessible by cable car, so there’s no pressure to ski or board down. But after some deliberation, I take on the 1,750-metre slope, and it’s no surprise it’s a steep 40% incline, mogul-filled black run. Elegance took a serious hit but I made it to the bottom, largely thanks to Alex from the Altitude Ski
Bruson
and Snowboarding School (www. altitude-verbier.com). And two minor stumbles doesn’t seem so bad when I learn that the run has hosted the World Speed Skiing Championships. I wonder if Dicaprio can get to the bottom without falling... We’re joined by Ski Sunday presenter and ex-pro boarder Ed Leigh, who I suspect is holding back when he leisurely takes on the famous slope with ease. “I fell in love with Verbier for a number of reasons,” he tells me. “The sheer size of the ski area is mind-blowing, and they haven’t littered the slopes with lots of lifts that ultimately crowd the slopes and ruin the views.” Even after 25 years of being spoilt by alpine scenery, the beautiful views at Verbier still make him stop and drink them in. Ed says the reputation as a prestigious resort hasn’t limited its visitors to just “billionaire frou-frou crew” though.
The view from Bruson 112
“Its freeride credentials have always drawn the less well-heeled powder pilgrims to town too. It’s the mixture that’s created the legendary nightlife.”
TRAVEL
L’Escale is the place for it. Meanwhile, in Bruson, you can get a very reasonably priced cheese-based lunch hillside at Restaurant de Moay. The same can’t always be said of French resorts. Later, we sip cocktails in La Farinet, where, ahem, Pixie Lott spent last New Year’s Eve. And while the hype would have you believe that champagne magnums fill the tables, the truth is it’s no more pricey than an average central London bar. Next door, there’s even a rock night on, where you can buy beer pitchers and have to drink from plastic cups in front of a live band. As skiing goes, the pristine slopes of Verbier and Bruson are among the best I’ve visited, and with an abundance of snow, they’re perfect for an early or late-season trip. Lift passes are 66 CHF (£54) a day or 340 CHF (£280) for six days (more for access to the rest of the 4 Vallees), which is very similar to the likes of St Anton, Chamonix and Tignes. Let’s face it, skiing is never cheap but if you’re planning to hit the slopes of Verbier, it is possible to retreat into an Alpine bubble at a sensible price, and still rub shoulders with James Blunt. By Lauren Taylor, Press Association Photo credit: PA Photo/Lauren Taylor
This ‘exclusive’ label is actually one they’re keen to shake in Verbier. In the current economic climate, like any resort, they need the mass market, not just those with money to burn.
If you want nightlife though, Le Chable is tame and Verbier is where you’ll find apres ski (try Pub Mont Fort for £4 beer) turning into cocktails and clubbing into the early hours.
And while in Verbier you could hire a £112,000 a week chalet (one Richard Branson owns) or stay in the fabulous five star Hotel W, you could also stay in Le Chable, a direct gondola or 15-minute bus ride away, and spend significantly less.
Bruson, on the other side of the valley, is quieter still. A charming but more modestly-sized skiing area, it’s only recently become easily accessible thanks to a new gondola from Le Chable. There’s plenty of off-piste, forested sections here for the more adventurous.
Hotel A Larze opened this year and has beautiful but cosy rooms for as little as £83 a night with breakfast. Elsewhere in Le Chable, there’s a good choice of self-catering apartments, and I’m told a hotel business in Verbier is looking to create 10,000 new beds, including dorm rooms.
My own adventure into the powdery snow (slightly) off-piste is helped by instructor and ski race coach Sega, who is encouraging with a dose of tough love. I’m sure my turns are better for it though.
Le Chable itself is more low key and unassuming than it’s more famous neighbour; it has restaurants, ski hire shops and a train station that’ll take you straight to Geneva. It may take ever so slightly longer to get on to the slopes, but it means you bypass any crowds at Verbier.
We stop for lunch at Dahu, perched on the mountainside with a breathtaking view. The pizza chef here is awardwinning, but if you have more refined culinary tastes, the food at Brasserie 1 in Le Chable is by far the best in my experience, and it seems customer Tripadvisor reviews agree. It wouldn’t be Switzerland without some cheesy raclette though, and in Le Chable,

5 PENDANT LIGHTS WE LOVE & HOW TO USE THEM Pendant lights are a necessity in any interior designers toolkit. With the bulb and/or shade hanging from a single cord, the pendant offers stylish minimalism to any room, abiding to the designer favoured ‘less is more’ ethos. Designer’s Tip: Pendant Lights are just as much about the shade as the cord. A lot of lighting and homeware retailers will sell alternative cords in a variety of different styles. Depending on the look you are trying to create, consider the material and or style that you use.

GRINGO MULTI PENDANT LIGHT Cuckooland.com £299.00
When it comes to statement lighting, the Gringo Multi Pendant is a real showstopper. With its honeycomb grid design your guests will awe at its ornate figure, whilst the functional swivel heads allow you the ultimate mood lighting. A funky substitute for the favoured chandelier, this pendant makes a gorgeous addition to even the plainest rooms. Finished in a burnished brass, this light is also bang on trend for this and next year.

DUTCHBONE CONCRETE PENDANT LAMP IN CARAFE DESIGN Cuckooland.com, £95.00
Encapsulating the ‘industrial look’ this lamp is a great addition to a modern/urban home. Made from painted concrete this lamp is really quite unique and the little addition of ashwood gives it a stylish contemporary edge. Design powerhouse ‘Dutchbone’ went in search of the next big thing and discovered that concrete was the up and coming material. DESIGNER’S TIP: ditch the bedside table. For a contemporary look (and a lot of space saving) suspend a pendant light above your bedside table. The size of the lamp should be in proportion with the size of the room – don’t opt with an enormous shade if you’re working with a studio flat.

As part of the ‘Bergen’ range, table and wall lamps, 3 light linear and 5 cluster pendants are also available. Pair the single glass pendant with a set of table lamps and you’ll have a stunning light display for any living space and or bedroom. ABOVE: Bubble Glass Pendant, £60.00. For an alternative and very much industrial look as the name would suggest, this is the go to. A decorative bulb cadged in a metal frame, this pendant makes a great feature to kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms. For a really unique look, why not try getting your hands on a few of these and creative a cluster of lights, at all different levels and positions. With 9 on trend colours available, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
The Coco ceiling lamp is perfect for injecting a little copper flourish into the room. With a unique flamed metal finish, this light is a playful take on the popular metallic pendant. A combination of two natural materials – stained mango wood and the aforementioned copper – this light represents a balance of both man and nature, with an industrial material into play with an organic one. Ideally suited to kitchens and industrial-esk living spaces.

OUTDOOR LIVING
RECYCLING NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD During these autumn months we still spend time outside, so it is important to make sure your outdoor space can be enjoyed throughout all the seasons. At Reformed Plastics we offer a range of garden furniture, decking, planters, gates and fencing options suitable for a variety of environments from your garden to public area. All of our products are made from 100% recycled plastic. We manufacture products ourselves and then sell direct to the Domestic and Commercial sector. Due to ever increasing importance to recycle and protect the environment, the plastic used is recycled in the UK and is the perfect alternative to wood. Our aims are to help rebuild the environment by utilizing a commodity, which people would otherwise just throw away, and so turn what to some would be rubbish into a valuable product for everybody.
FINANCIAL BENEFITS Achieving value for money is a key driver for any purchasing
decision. Although
some
recycled
products have greater up-front cost, their longevity and durability make them a more cost-effective option over the long term. Our products have many practical and very useful properties and has an infinite range of different uses, some of which being are as decking, fencing, outdoor furniture, planters, boardwalks, landscaping, bollards, signage and construction etc. The list of possibilities is endless and the long-term advantages it has over traditional materials are staggering! It’s a great investment, as it never needs to be replaced due to its high strength and durability, therefore it quickly pays for itself in the long run. In short, it’s worry free!
ABOUT US The concept of Reformed Plastics was born over 15 years ago from the curiosity of its founder. Being an engineer by profession, and having had his own UPVC Windows business, and also being the practical and inquisitive person that he is, one day he decided to find out what was really happening to the waste that people were so freely throwing away. His research and interest lead him to focus on plastics, how it can 134
be recycled and what it could be reused for.
OUTDOOR LIVING
He discovered that the USA and a few European countries had been recycling and remanufacturing waste plastics into alternative timber products for many years, instead of throwing it all into landfill! Over time, slowly but surely he developed a few basic products in the form of planks and posts and very soon he began to receive interest from people wanting to know more about this revolutionary product that is both an environmentally friendly alternative to normal timber and sustainable which means it will save them a lot of money in the long term! From then on, the rest as they say is history.
WHAT CAN THE PLASTIC BE USED FOR? The manufactured plastic has many practical and very useful properties. The main base of our products are in the form of planks and posts which can be used on their own for garden fences, both low for front gardens and high for side and back fences for instance, along road sides and around fields and paddocks just to name a few. It is also possible to produce a number of other products out of our plastic, such as picnic tables. These would vary in size, suitable for adults and children. Park benches, outdoor tables, square or rectangular plant boxes, decking and seating... the list is endless.
WHY ARE RECYCLED PLASTIC PRODUCTS DIFFERENT? Plastic lumber is the perfect alternative to anything that has ever needed maintaining. Plastic lumber can be cut with a regular saw, drilled, nailed or screwed into and routed as easily as wood. • Resistant to extreme weather • Will not rot, split or splinter • Will not need painting or staining • Is wear resistant • Resistant to vandalism • Resistant to salt water • Resistant to chemicals • Resistant to insects and bacteria • Anti-slip decking • Lasts for over 50 years

OUTDOOR LIVING
Cotehele, Cornwall When the residents of Cotehele first hung a modest, floral Christmas display in the hall six decades ago, little did they know how their simple decoration would turn into the magnificent and famous tradition it is today. To celebrate the garland’s 60 years, the gardeners have secret plans to give it a new look. All of the flowers (20,000-35,000 depending on the growing season) are grown and dried on the estate and the garland will be hung until December 31 (www. nationaltrust.org.uk/cotehele).
Croome Court, Worcester Take in a guided tour of the gardens and parkland Capability Brown designed with stunning views over the Malverns at Croome Court. Guided tours run until December 31, with temples, follies and statues around every corner. If you want to explore on your own, downloadable walks, including a winter welly walk to Pirton Castle, are available from www. nationaltrust.org.uk.

Kids can get involved in the festive garden detective trail, while Magic of Christmas days offer family fun to get you in the festive spirit. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Winter Walk, some 5,000 irises have been planted and will bloom in early spring (www.rhs.org. uk/gardens/harlow-carr).
Bodnant Garden, Conwy Bodnant’s winter garden has now been open for almost four years. Discover coloured-stemmed birches and enjoy the scent of winter shrubs such as hamamelis, daphne and sarcococca. NEW ALFA ROMEO STELVIO MODEL
140
Alfa Romeo has revealed details of its new Stelvio Quadrifoglio sporting SUV model, though it will not be on sale in the UK until next summer, when prices will be announced. Powered by a 2.9 litre V6 bi-turbo petrol engine offering 510 hp, the new model has a top speed of 176 mph and a 0-60 mph time of just 3.8 seconds. It features a Q4 all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring to deliver power to each wheel separately, and also has as standard an 8-speed auto gearbox with a race-mode setting. It also has paddleshifters on the steering column. Alfa says the Stelvio Quadrifoglio is set to become the new benchmark in the premium compact SUV segment. The car has electronically controlled cylinder deactivation system and a “sailing” function, available in Advanced Efficiency mode to boost fuel economy and reduce emissions. The interior of the Stelvio Quadrifoglio has been “tailored like a bespoke suit” says Alfa. It features premium materials including carbon fibre, leather and Alcantara. The centre of the dashboard is dominated by a new 8.8-inch Alfa Connect infotainment system with 3D navigation.
ALL-NEW MITSUBISHI SHOGUN SPORT Mitsubishi has announced that the all-new Shogun Sport will go on sale in the UK early in the New Year. Power is provided by a lightweight 2.4-litre diesel engine, which produces 180 hp and is mated to an new eight-speed automatic transmission. The standard specification includes Hill Descent Control, Trailer Start Assist, Hill Start Assist and a dedicated off-road mode, which will allow a choice of driving modes that can be selected to suit differing types of terrain. Inside, the Sport offers space for up to seven people and has up to 1,488 litres of load space with the rear seat folded. Two high-specification versions will be available from launch. Both will feature leather upholstery, keyless entry with push-button start, LED daytime running lights and the
Mitsubishi Smartphone Link Display Audio system which allows users to connect to apps or other features of their Apple or Android smartphone through the touchscreen or via voice control. The range-topping derivative adds further luxury with heated front seats and Mitsubishi’s most advanced safety features, including Forward Collision Mitigation, which uses radars in the front grille to judge whether there is risk of a collision with the vehicle in front, Blind Spot Warning and Multi-around Monitor System that employs cameras at the front, rear and in the door mirrors to display a bird’s eye view around the Shogun Sport. UK pricing and full specification details will be announced closer to launch.
ROAD TEST: AUDI Q2 The Q2 is Audi’s smallest SUV yet offers cool styling and badge kudos that most rivals cannot match, writes NICK FLETCHER. Q2 models start at £21,360 for models with basic kit, but for features such as connectivity, larger alloy wheels and more sporty looks, you have to move up the range, and most buyers do just that. My test model was the Q2 2.0 litre diesel Quattro S Tronic, very well equipped at £27,625 but laden with options including LED lighting, technology and comfort packs, leather sports seats and more, taking the price to £34,990. The 2.0 litre engine offers 148 hp and pushes the car to 60mph in just 8.1 seconds, with a top speed of 131 mph. Fuel consumption is a respectable 58.9 mpg combined. Good figures, which underpin a car which drives beautifully – smooth, remarkably agile and superbly composed. Its Quattro all-wheel-drive system keep the car well-planted on the corners and despite stiffer sports suspension, still delivers a very comfortable ride. And the S Tronic gearbox is very responsive, with quick yet smooth shifts. The Q2 maintains the distinctive Audi look, a sculptured shape hallmarked by a deep front grille and the unmistakable four-circle badge which all combine to present potent kerb appeal. The interior accomodates four adults with ease, with even six-footers getting enough headroom in the rear. There are plenty of oddment stowage spaces and boot space is 355 litres, boosted to 1,000 litres with the rear seats folded.
Standard features on the test model include power windows, remote locking, climate control, virtual cockpit (virtual instruments instead of actual dials), sports steering wheel with paddle-shifters and a dash-top screen for sat-nav, infotainment and connectivity. There are plenty of safety features too, including Audi’s Pre Sense safety kit which is standard across the range, with Autonomous Emergency Braking which will put the brakes on if the sensors detect a pedestrian stepping out in front of the car. The SUV sector is jam-packed with worthy contenders, including Mercedes GLA, BMW X1 and Mazda CX-3 but Audi has over the years cultivated an unmatched ultra-cool brand image with immense appeal to discerning drivers, and that helps gives the Q2 a real cutting edge in its class.

NEW DS7 CROSSBACK
ROAD TEST: FORD KUGA It’s been almost 10 years since the Ford Kuga was launched and since then, demand for SUV models has expanded greatly, creating many more contenders vying for sales, writes NICK FLETCHER. To meet this challenge, the Kuga was facelifted for 2017, which gave the model a more distinctive exterior look, though interior changes are less obvious. Even so, the Kuga stacks up well against more recent competitors, offering a wide choice of engines, 4WD options, roomy cabin and a good level of standard kit. Prices start at £22,595 for an entry version which still boasts features such as alloy wheels, sports seats and cruise control but my test model was an ST-Line 2.0 litre diesel version with a price tag of £28,475. This model features darkened alloys, black grille and roof rails and a body kit to give it a more rugged sporty image. There is plenty of equipment too, including sports suspension, climate control, auto lights and wipers, cruise control with speed limiter, keyless start, 8-inch touch-screen, sat-nav, connectivity,
audio voice control and tyre pressure monitoring. The 148 hp diesel engine is capable unit, proving smooth and responsive and the 0-60 mph time of 10.1 seconds is fairly typical of class standards. Top speed is 121 mph and the fuel consumption is 60.1 mpg combined,. On the road, the car has a slightly heavier feel than some rivals, with well-weighted steering and stiffer ST-Line suspension giving good grip and composed cornering, albeit at the expense of a firmer ride. Inside, there is decent room for five adults, a 456 litre boot and easy flat-fold seats to boost capacity to 1,603 litres. The dashboard looks a little ordinary compared with more recent rivals but it is logically laid out and easy to use which arguably is better than looking flashy but being more complicated. The Kuga is up against strong opposition in a crowded SUV sector which includes Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V, Peugeot 3008, SEAT Ateca and VW Tiguan yet the Kuga does have its own presence and plus-points and the recent styling touches and upgrades keep it well in the mix of best-buy SUVs.
DS Automobiles is now taking orders for its new DS7 Crossback, an SUV model with a range of petrol and diesel engines and priced from £28,050. The interior of DS 7 CROSSBACK is “chic and contemporary” says DS, and is available in a choice of different trims. Four engines are available from launch: two turbo petrol engines with an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard and two turbocharged diesel engines with manual or auto gearboxes. The range starts with the DS 7 CROSSBACK ‘ELEGANCE’ which features 18-inch Black Onyx diamondcut alloy wheels, black grille and chromed DS Wings, 3D rear lights, tinted and acoustic rear windscreen, electric parking brake, lane departure Warning, driver attention warning, rear parking sensors, and LED front foglights with cornering light function.
ALL-NEW JEEP WRANGLER Jeep has released photos of its all-new Wrangler which will be officially launched at the Los Angles Motor Show on November 29. The company says the modern design stays true to the original and comes with advanced fuel-efficient powertrains, more open-air options, and is loaded with more safety features and advanced technology. The design includes an instantly recognizable keystoneshaped grille, iconic round headlamps and square tail lamps, improved aerodynamics, a convenient fold-down windscreen for off-road purists, and dozens of different door, top and windscreen combinations. Prices and detailed specifications will be announced at the official launch. Jeep says:”Built on more than 75 years of legendary heritage, the Jeep brand delivers an open invitation to live life to the fullest by offering a full line of vehicles that provide owners with a sense of security to handle any journey with confidence”. The Jeep vehicle line-up consists of the Cherokee, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Renegade and Wrangler. NIGERIAN FOOD ENTERS THE FRAY After winning a competition to write a cookery book celebrating African food, Lope Ariyo talks about how Nigeria and Britain are reflected in her food, and why we need to share it Lope Ariyo is “more than happy to introduce the world to African cuisine”. Having entered a Red magazine competition to discover a cook destined to take an African cuisine mainstream. She fed the judges her signature hibiscus chicken dish, and dazzled them with her contemporary approach to Nigerian cooking, and the result is her debut cookbook, Hibiscus (she’s obsessed with hibiscus). Lope calls it “an entry point” into West African cuisine, as it blends her British background, growing up in East Croydon, with her memories of the food she ate during the couple of years she spent at boarding school in Nigeria.
When it comes to opening more eyes, and bellies, to Nigerian cooking, Lope particularly wants to convince people of the “many uses for the traditional ingredients that haven’t really been explored yet.” It helps that core Nigerian ingredients are becoming increasingly available in supermarkets. “When I was growing up, I’d never see Nigerian ingredients in Tesco or Sainsbury’s, now - it’s still in the ‘ethnic’ section - but the fact it’s there is great.” You can find garri (dried, fermented cassava), yam and cassava flour, chin chin (a cross between a shortbread and a biscotti), okra and even plantain on shelves now - although Lope notes, “I don’t like the prices, they’re much more expensive compared to market prices.” “We cook for plenty, so anyone who wants to come and eat, can come and eat,” she says. “I don’t think it’s great to alienate people from food, because food is about sharing - in any culture.”

Ingredients
Hibiscus Chicken
4 chicken breasts 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted Fine-cut dried hibiscus petals For the marinade: 1tsp celery salt 1tsp onion granules 1tsp garlic granules 1tsp black pepper 1tsp ground white pepper 1tsp cayenne pepper 2tsp finely chopped parsley 2tsp finely chopped tarragon For the sauce: 2tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice 200ml unsweetened coconut water 2tbsp fine-cut dried hibiscus petals 4tbsp coconut sugar
(Serves 4)
Method In a large bowl, combine all the marinade ingredients. Toss in the chicken breasts and coconut oil, mix so that the chicken is well coated and leave to marinate for 30 minutes. To make the sauce, whisk the lemon juice, coconut water, hibiscus and coconut sugar in a small saucepan over a medium heat. Bring to the boil before reducing the heat to low, then leave to simmer for 15 minutes until the liquid has reduced by half. Set aside and allow the sauce to cool completely for roughly 15 minutes, until it thickens. Put a griddle pan over a medium heat to heat up, and meanwhile brush each marinated chicken breast with the sauce. Place them in the hot pan and cook, giving each side four to five minutes before turning - they should be nicely browned and cooked through.

Fried Coconut Rice (Serves 4)
PA Photo/Harper Collins
Ingredients
Method
370g long-grain rice or basmati rice 400ml tin coconut milk 1 tbsp groundnut oil or coconut oil 1 chicken stock cube 1/2tsp dried thyme 2 dried bay leaves 1/2 red onion, finely chopped 6 closed-cup mushrooms, wiped and chopped 1/2 green pepper, finely chopped 1/2 yellow pepper, finely chopped 1 large carrot, finely chopped 1 tsp ground coriander 1/4tsp turmeric 1tsp garlic powder 1tsp ground ginger Salt and white pepper
In a large saucepan, bring the coconut milk to the boil along with the stock cube, thyme and bay leaves. Reduce the heat to medium-low and allow the coconut milk to simmer for five minutes until it smells slightly fragrant. Meanwhile, rinse the rice until the water runs clear. Drain the rice in a colander, then add it to the coconut milk - it should just about be covered by the liquid. Turn the heat up to medium-high, cover with a lid and cook for about 10 minutes - you’ll have to stir the rice every so often to make sure it doesn’t burn on the bottom. Once most of the milk has been absorbed, you’ll find that if you bite on a grain of rice, it should have softened but still be quite al dente and taste slightly nutty. Turn off the heat and set aside.
Take a large, deep frying pan and heat the groundnut oil or coconut oil over a mediumhigh heat. Add the onion, mushrooms, peppers and carrot, and coat them with the ground coriander, turmeric, garlic powder and ginger. Continuously stir the veggies for seven minutes until they start to soften. Add the partly cooked rice and season with salt and pepper before reducing the heat to mediumlow. Cover the pan with a lid and steam for a further five to 10 minutes, depending on how soft you like your rice. Divide the rice evenly between four plates, or place in a large serving dish for the middle of table. 143

Hibiscus & Coconut Cake (Serves 12)
PA Photo/Harper Collins
Ingredients
Method
180g plain flour 60g ground egusi seeds or ground almonds 80g fine-cut dried hibiscus petals, plus extra for decorating (available from Amazon) 1tsp ground cloves 1tsp baking powder 1tsp bicarbonate of soda 1/2tsp salt 90g coconut oil, softened 60ml groundnut oil, plus extra for greasing 100g caster sugar 80g light brown sugar 3 large eggs 1/2 x 400ml tin coconut milk 2tsp vanilla extract 2tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice Desiccated coconut, to decorate
Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas mark 4. Grease two round 20cm cake tins, then line them with baking paper.
For the coconut drizzle: 120g icing sugar 4tbsp coconut milk 1/2tsp coconut extract 1/2tsp vanilla extract For the coconut frosting: 300g cream cheese 2tbsp coconut milk 80g icing sugar 1tbsp fine-cut dried hibiscus petals 144
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, ground egusi seeds or ground almonds, hibiscus petals, ground cloves, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda and salt. In another large bowl, cream the coconut oil, groundnut oil and sugars together. One by one, add the eggs until well combined. Add half of the dry ingredients to the bowl, followed by half of the coconut milk and mix with an electric hand whisk or stand mixer until wellcombined, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Repeat to add the remaining dry ingredients and coconut milk and mix to thoroughly combine. Finally, add the vanilla extract and lemon juice, folding in gently. Transfer the batter into a large measuring jug and evenly distribute it between the two cake tins. If you prefer less washing up, roughly measure by eye. Bake the cakes for about 30 minutes. When they’re
ready, a skewer inserted into the centre should come out clean. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tins for 10 minutes, then turn the cakes out onto a cooling rack and allow to cool completely. To make the drizzle, mix the icing sugar with the coconut milk to get a thick drizzle, then add the coconut and vanilla extracts. Trickle over both layers of the cooled hibiscus cake. For the frosting, whisk all the ingredients together to create a fluffy purple cloud. Make sure the colour is consistent throughout. Spread half the frosting over one of the cakes and place the second on top. Spread what’s left of the frosting over the top layer and sprinkle over the desiccated coconut and hibiscus petals to decorate.

PARADISE AT HOME In an effort to seek some R&R, I sat down with my significant other to discuss the possibility of a holiday. Like most, we have put in the graft, working day and night to pay for all of life’s little joys; the mortgage, bills, my princess of a dog’s specific dietary needs…we, like many, were in need of a break. So one night we sat together and explored website after website, each suggesting ideas and quickly dismissing them. Arguments breaking out over flight durations, destinations and how this whole holiday finding process was actually a reflection of a deep routed inability to commit (sorry, it got personal). The point is, sometimes booking a relaxing escape abroad is one of the most stressful experiences. Then it occurred to me, why am I so desperate to escape a part of the world that tons of holidaymakers would die to visit? Our neighbouring county Cornwall is widely regarding as one of the most beautiful parts of the country, offering breathtaking views, art, renowned
culinary haunts and some of the world’s most beautiful beaches – light bulb alert. It hit me, why don’t we swap our vacay, for a staycay? So, we decided to turn to the awesome team at ‘Beachspoke’ – luxury holiday home specialists – who helped us snag a stunning rental, located in the charming Cornish village of ‘Mousehole’. We arrived in Cornwall, a pinch weary from our 4-hour car journey, which by all standards was far more pleasurable (and scenic) than the less than alluring sight of the M3 on route to Gatwick. After a quick pit stop in Penzanse, where we stocked up on all the essentials – aka pasties, clotted cream and cider – we headed for our crashpad in Mousehole. After a blazing trail through winding country roads and narrow village streets we had arrived. We pulled up in the world’s most scenic car park, adjacent to the twinkling waterfront and headed towards the ‘Harbour Moon’ cottage.
Prior to our visit Olivia (our staycation guru/Beachspoke tour guide) had given us the code to a tiny security box that would unlock the key to the door. We guided the key into the lock and pushed open the door – deep breath – and WOW.

I stepped down into the kitchen come sitting room. Every inch of the space was adorned with style. The matte marble-esque worktops with chrome trimmings, the exposed stonewall, the driftwood sculptures; everything was gorgeous. Our exploration was heightened as we climbed the nautical rope-aided stairwell, only to discover the stunning boudoir above. We crept in, taking in every nook and cranny. To the left, bronze-flecked tiles flowed seemly from floor to wall, creating a contemporary wet-room, complete with walk in shower and a copper basin. White fluffy robes hung up tied with a bow, set the tone for what was to be a truly lavish layover. We continued into the room our excitement growing. A grand bed took pride and place centralised in the latter part of the room, it’s headboard the divide between bathroom and bedroom. I looked up to discover fishing nets woven between the
STAYCATION
Another day of adventure concluded and we began our usual holiday ritual of changing for the evening affair. Tonight we decided to visit the famous ‘2 Fore Street’. Owner and operator Joe (who actually took our booking that morning) served some of the best food I have ever had. The quality, flavour and evident passion spoke through the food and the service from their fantastic team heightening an already incredible experience. We returned to our pad for the last time. In an effort to savour as much of this wonderful property as we could, we perched in the living room enjoying the fresh scones and raspberry conserve we had picked up earlier that day. As our eyes grew heavy we decided to tuck ourselves into our opulent marshmallow bed once more. What a trip. Beachspoke have opened my eyes to a new kind of travel accommodation and a truly luxurious experience, all only hours away. Our property, ‘Harbour Moon’, is one of eight luxury properties in and around Cornwall, Devon and Cotswold that Beachspoke manage. white beams with a large copper pendant light suspended over the divan. A beam of light crept over the bed, inviting us to the furthest part of the room. I went to open the curtains before being distracted by the glass floor below me that looked out onto the living space below. The natural light coming from the open window below reminded me of the magnificence of seaside living. Finally I crept towards the rustic café-style shutters and pulled them apart, revealing the picturesque harbour view that had been hiding behind it. It was breathtaking. Excited to explore the town we threw on some fresh clothes and hit up the local haunts. Based on the recommendations in our Harbour Moon guidebook, we decided to pay a visit to the ‘Old Coastguard’, a popular restaurant on the cliff top overlooking the sea. To get to the restaurant, we strolled along the rockery and climbed a stone stairwell that disclosed a beautiful garden. We crept in through the double doors and snagged a table. The meal was delicious, complete with local gins and fresh seafood. Feeling full and fully inebriated we
made our way back to the cottage to enjoy our first night in that enormous bed – lights out. We awoke in the sun-filled room ready for a day of exploration, though the feeling of duck-feather pillows and a sumptuous mattress made it hard to actually leave. Adam – my partner whom I mentioned in the beginning – true to his heroic nature, gathered breakfast supplies (from the quaint local post office I might add). I tore myself away from bed and headed to the first place anyone on holiday goes: the fridge. I opened the door only to reveal a bottle of sparkling English wine, a half pint of milk and some eggs. What a lovely touch. I was at a beverage related crossroads; I had planned to assemble a coffee from the very lovely looking Nepresso machine, but now I had discovered the sparkling wine? Like anyone else in my position I weighed up the options and decided that having both was the only way forward. Gathering my drinks I headed for the bathroom. A sip, disrobe and another sip later, I was enjoying the marvellous sensation of a rainfall shower. I thought; if this is how the other half live, I want to trade sides.

QUIT TALKING START DOING
Charlie Lowe from the fastest growing bootcamp ‘Wassmuffin Fitter Than fit’ talks Fitness, well being, healthy eating and of course Thai Boxing.
Hello again fitness fam’. Lots going on, as usual, that I want to inform you about. We’ve just had 5 fighters out on one of the best shows in the South, Fast and Furious in Southampton, hosted and put together by the Look Borai/Exile team. It’s a great show and incredibly well run, with some fantastic matches from novice to pros. Our guys did fantastically well with some hard fights, but the lions always step up to the challenge and give 100%. Some of our fighters were literally taking their fights with only mere weeks of training (intense though I must say). Going through their fight camps with them and then culminating in cornering them for the fight is such a fantastic experience, and I have to say makes us incredibly proud. If you’ve ever thought that you would possibly like to try it, even once, we are definitely the gym to
come to. We have absolute beginners and we also have experienced fighters and to be honest, you never stop learning in a game like this. All coaches and corner teams have the fighters utmost safety in mind and a Show like fast and Furious is a fantastic night out even if you’re just there to watch and support. If this couldn’t be further from what you want to do and you only want to use your training as self defense, a bit of fun, or to get fit, we are also the gym for that too. We have a new course in beginners Thai boxing starting in January. The course will last 6 weeks and cover all basics from stance to striking and pad holding drills (pad holding can be just as important as actually hitting them). This is a great way for anyone with little or no experience to gain the basics in Thai boxing and feel more confident to be able to go on to any of our other striking classes.
As I always say it’s just walking through the door that’s the hard bit and we completely understand, that’s’ why we are one of the most friendly gyms in the South, teamed with a great atmosphere.
OFFER 1 We are also still running our great winter offer, which includes all fitness classes, including our well-loved bootcamp and the Thai boxing classes – that’s at least 14 CLASSES FOR THE FANTASTIC PRICE OF £30.
OFFER 2 For students we know finances are an issue, so we are offering platinum membership which gives you access to ALL classes and open hours in the gym usually £80 for £50! And a silver membership, which gives you access to open gym time and Muay Thai bootcamp, usually £50 per month for just £30.

We wanted to know what all the fuss was about...
THE CRAB Delectable food by the sea Every now and again, we get the opportunity to do some incredibly envious things, things like dining out at some of the best restaurants across Dorset and this was no exception. Situated across from the beloved Bournemouth pier approach, The Crab is in its natural habitat, serving gorgeous seafood, by the sea. We arrived one brisk, autumnal afternoon to sample the delights of their seasonal menu. With the subdued warmth of a winter sun egging us on, the team was in highspirits for a fine-dining event. We arrived at the glass-housed restaurant and took in the décor. The tables were adorned with appropriate seaside earthenware, polished silver and voluptuous wine goblets; a beautiful littoral setting for the day. We scanned the room only for our eyes to catch our wonderful host for the afternoon, who swiftly sat us on a long table by the window, allowing us a prime people watching opportunity. Shortly after taking our seats, we received the menus. We shot each other an excited glance and began pondering our food choices, but first, the allimportant drinks. For me, nothing compares to the refreshment and suitable pairing (with fish) of a cool, crisp Sauvignon Blanc, preferably (and it was) of New Zealand origin. Among the other choices, were full-bodied reds, familiar and favoured beers and invigorating soft drinks, all recommended

based on pertaining food choices – ah, such service. Having submitted our orders, we toasted to the meal ahead and waited excitedly for the first course to arrive, but before the lips of our glasses could touch a little amuse-bouche arrived. A gorgeous little package of unidentified, yet incredible, flavour – the perfect way to rouse our appetites. A few sips of wine later, our starters arrived. Ross and I had both ordered the same (great minds), a gorgeous ‘Native Lobster Thermidor Gratin’, complete with Gruyere cheese and an almost sinfully good smoked bacon crumb. Cheese lovers, you need to try this. Each and every element was perfect; my only complaint was not having more! Across from me, Ben was happily savouring crisp parcels of fried squid. As he was unable to park his crockery I took it to be a resounding yes from him. The rest of team had decided to save themselves for the main event, a smart move considering two of them would be sharing the signature ‘Hot Fruits De Mer’. The platter arrived and it was gasps all around; the sheer amount of food was incredible! On it was half a lobster, one whole crab, king tiger prawns, scallops St. Jacques, a bucket (not kidding) of tomato and chilli mussels, market fish and tempura oysters. I watched as the look of both shock and excitement battled over the right to a facial expression, but like troopers, they gathered their claw crackers and after dispersing most of the shell across the table, revealed some truly delicious fish. The scallops
were beautiful; silky and melting in the mouth and a welcomed contrast against the gently crispy tempura oysters. For main I had selected the ‘Seared Monkfish Fillet’, served with tarragon infused, crushed potato. The dish was paired with an utterly sublime pea and wasabi puree, which brought a subtle heat and sweetness to the meaty-fish fillet. That paired with the nuttiness of the crab butter and cashew tuile was a continuous explosion of flavours and roller coaster ride of sweet and savoury delight. It was just incredible. One of the best fish dishes I’ve had in a long time. Almost too full to go on, the figurative goodie and baddie on my shoulders battled with the idea of dessert and depending on your own outlook one of them won and 10 minutes later, dessert arrived. A breathtaking ‘Pistachio Crème Brule’ arrived, unfortunately it was for Ross – fortunately he let me try some and it was seriously good. I would go back purely for dessert. For a beautiful fine-dining experience, particularly for fish lovers, you have to visit The Crab. By Charlotte Williams t. 01202 203601 a. Exeter Rd, Bournemouth BH2 5AJ w. www.crabatbournemouth.com

We wanted to know what all the fuss was about...
THE PIG HOTEL A squeal of a time by Charlotte Williams
We arrived early afternoon, on a rare sunny day, during the dampest week on record. Beyond the winding country lane, tucked behind shrouded hedges, stood The Pig. The presence of this country mansion rendered us wide-eyed and open-mouthed, momentarily unable to move for fear the infamous clock would chime midnight and all would melt before us, a building of this stature certainly wagered a ‘fairytale-esque’ tragedy. A quick pinch to prove it was all real, and onward we went. It’s a strange feeling to be on the one hand so at home and on the other, in awe of every detail around you. You can almost imagine a time where wealthy Lords and Ladies spent their Summers leisurely lolling with iced teas and fine finger food. Though they might have swapped the iced teas for signature cocktails, sat in one of their many rooms you certainly feel a part of something truly grand. Housed in the main manor are two lounges, a cosy bar, the dining room, and rooms on the floor above, not forgetting the many little hideaways, but we shall leave you to discover those for yourself.
154
We were seated in their cosy lounge bar for predinner cocktails and ‘piggy bits’. I, a self-confessed meat addict, was presented with their famous ‘saddleback pork crackling’, and my dinner companion a sworn vegetarian, (how I admire her willpower and kind heart), the quails eggs. For whatever reason, we as Brits haven’t quite followed
our European cousins in their leisurely dining style, so how refreshing it was to be encouraged to sit back, relax and enjoy a long lunch. Rest assured this wasn’t paired with any kind of abandonment. Our servers were utterly attentive and management also checked-in to see we were being looked after. One or two ‘Lemongrass Collins’ cocktails later, we were taken through to their stunning dinning room. Sat at a table for two with a garden view, no expense has been spared in creating the perfect setting. Of course the usual suspects are present, water and wine glasses, silver wear, but there are also a few very special additions we weren’t expecting. Our waitress took the liberty of explaining what we had before us, which instantly made us feel at ease. There is nothing worse than that feeling of slight inferiority, which can sometimes come from fine dining. Refraining from asking questions for fear of looking out of place, here that wasn’t an issue. On our table was a bottle of herb infused oil, accompanied by a trinket-sized pot of smoked-salt (smoked on their premises may I had). This was all part of the plan for the homemade bread, which was to come. Now seated comfortably, with a piece of smoky oil soaked bread in the one hand, and a glass of red in the other we began our selection process. It all looked divine, truly, we knew making a decision wouldn’t be easy, so we employed the help of our waitress once again. They have really paid attention to people’s food needs, not only catering to vegetarians, but also having a specific menu filled with tons of unusual and exciting options, to be honest, even a meat eater like myself would be equally satisfied with the options on this menu. The
FOOD & DRINK NEED TO KNOW
waitress made her recommendations and putting our complete faith in her, we ordered accordingly. In order to maintain their sustainable approach to food, their menu is changed ever day or so, so I pray for the purpose of this article you don’t get too attached to the dishes themselves so much as the overall experience and evidence of the quality of the food. On that note, onwards to the starters...

PERFECT FOR
I began with my plate of porky paradise. So good, it felt sinful; excited by the contrast between the deeply satisfying sealed fat, and crispiness of the coating, I was sure I had died and gone to foodie heaven. The only thing I had as a bargaining chip for my sins were the toasted chickpeas, which accompanied the dish, “please food police, I have been healthy, right?” For main I continued on my path to food enlightenment, but let’s park that momentarily, and indulge in my guest’s dish, a ‘new age gnocchi’. Nothing about this dish was ordinary, not a conventional potato pasta in sight! Their take on an Italian classic was genius, potato and goats cheese balls, rolled in a rosemary crumb, with the quintessentially Mediterranean drizzle of oil. Nothing short of stunning – I hope the seasons are kind, and keep this dish forever in their favour. For my main; a locally sourced venison loin. If you’ve never had the pleasure of trying venison before, imagine the texture of a fillet steak, with a more robust flavour. Now imagine it cooked to perfection, the outside seared, only to slice in to reveal a blush pink center. Not forgetting our chosen side, the ‘cheese topped polenta pot’ – cheese topped, need we say more? Our food tale concludes, as so many before have, with dessert. The menu was made up of worldrenowned puddings, with a British twist. Making use of seasonal produce, (grown on site, or no more than 25 miles away), their take on a trifle, was a homage to the ever underappreciated ‘apple’. There are certain dishes, that we believe cannot compare to that of the ones our parents would make for us as children, for me this is the trifle. I’ll let you in on a little secret (let’s hope my dear old ma doesn’t pick up this issue), I think I might have just found my new supplier. Nostalgia conjuring flavour memories of mucky faces came flooding in, but this time, I wasn’t allowing any of it to miss my mouth. A somewhat more modern after dinner special was the ‘Iced Late Terrine’ that my co-pilot had, and that I just had to try of course. The first bite – Whoosh! An aromatic coffee hit. Much like a parfait, it was both cool and creamy, with the interesting addition of crumbled sugar glass. It was the perfect ending to an incredible feast, but this story doesn’t end at dessert – we were invited to stay the evening. Me and my now ‘roomie’ sauntered to reception, where we met the most charming staff, who handed us the keys to our very own room, but I’ll come back

to the that later, first, head chef Dan took the time to give us a tour of the grounds in which they grow their produce. Row upon row, shed upon shed of fresh herbs, vegetables, fruits and even some livestock – it was inspiring. Dan talked us through the many things growing in their garden, he told us how important it was to him that the produce be respected, not just in the sense of keeping them alive and well, but in the way in which they should be used in dishes. The idea that if you highlight the best the produce has to offer, it will return the favour in delicious spoils. Not that we’re disregarding the skill of our chef - of course it helps if the master of the helm knows what they are doing – and with Dan as captain you’re in good hands. As well as their gardens we got the chance to visit their ‘smoke shed’. A humble but powerful wooden hut powered by a simple pond motor and flavoured with sawdust donated by a local carpenter. It seems their creative food team love experimenting; on our visit they were smoking multiple products including salt, cane sugar, and lavender, but their claim to fame is there home smoked salmon. Sadly we didn’t get the chance to try it this time (those salmons aren’t quite swimming in this neck of the woods this time of year), but we are told it’s nothing short of stunning. After our tour we retired to our quaint twin room, hiding above the herb gardens. The shabby chic theme continues, where luxurious bedding and beautiful fabrics meet rustic wooden tables and shabby chic furnishings. Waiting for us was a bottle of local sparkling wine – is there no end to their hospitality? After we unpacked and got ourselves settled, it was time to investigate the bathroom. A vintage

roll-top tub lay by the window, the blinds slanted so other guests couldn’t see in, but you could still take in the scenic view whilst getting sudsy. After being encouraged to take advantage of the luxury products, I thought it best to do as I was told. So into the tub I went, fizz in hand. Well what hotel stay would be complete without the classic toweling robe? Wrapping myself up I joined my roommate in a ‘chick flick’ marathon. That’s right – if you head to reception they’ll provide you with a list of films to choose from that you can take back to your room, perfect for our girly night in! Well all good things must come to an end and so we sunk into our marshmallow pillows and let the soundtrack to a certain New York city based chick flick soothe us to sleep. Thank you to everyone that looked after us. You have won our hearts, and we hope we can come and visit again soon.

Lip augmentation is very popular because it produces immediate results which can be subtle or dramatic, in a very short amount of time. The degree of fullness of each lip (upper and lower) can be controlled as the lips can be injected with different amounts. The lips are an important feature of your facial appearance. Lip augmentation can generally address the following concerns: • Thin upper and/or lower lip • Loss of volume in the lips (due to the ageing process)
