DIVERSE ABILITIES SAY ‘THANK YOU’ On Tuesday 19 December, staff from Diverse Abilities took to the phones with a specific goal – to call everyone who has supported the charity throughout 2017 and simply say ‘thank you’. Throughout the day - dubbed Thank You Day - staff based at the Dorset charity’s Poole HQ endeavoured to call each person who had raised money, took part in a charity event or simply donated to Diverse Abilities over the course of the previous 12 months, to personally express gratitude for their act of kindness. Ashley Weedon, fundraising manager at Diverse Abilities, said: “Whether our supporters have held a bake sale, climbed a mountain, made a donation or attended one of our events, we aimed to call each and every person to personally thank them and to let them know we couldn’t do what we do without them.”

SANTA CLAUS COMES TO TOWN FOR DIVERSE ABILITIES Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, hosted a spectacular Winter Wonderland evening with glistening snow and a light display this festive season for the charity’s staff and supporters. On 22 December, one of the supported living properties, run by Diverse Abilities, invited supporters and colleagues to come along and enjoy warm mince pies, roasted chestnuts and a hot drink. They relished in the sound of classic Christmas songs with melodious choir ‘Bitter Sweet Harmony’, a local group of singers. Everyone from carers to fundraisers attended the warm gathering and received a surprise from the main man himself – Santa Claus – and met him in a special grotto. Julie Bateman, team leader at Diverse Abilities, said: “This was a great time for the adults supported by the charity to enjoy the magic of Christmas. LED DOWNLIGHTS I thought that it would be worth writing a piece just entirely dedicated to downlights as they are probably the most commonly used light fittings in modern homes. I will start with replacement lamps using your existing fittings. The old Halogen lamps mainly came in two forms the low voltage 12Vac MR16 type (two sharp pointed pins on the base) and the high voltage 240Vac GU10 (two mushroom shaped pins, push and twist). The MR16 was the brighter of the two lamps at around 800 lumens at 50 Watts with the GU10 around 500 lumens at 50W. in the new LED versions of these lamps the MR16 is no brighter than the GU10 and it is for this reason that we would recommend that where possible convert to GU10. The reasoning for this is that it doesn’t need a separate transformer so one less component to fail especially if reusing the existing old ac transformers that are probably nearing the end of their life. These old transformers may not like the low wattage LED, this may also cause problems when dimming. It is quite a simple job to

When buying the new LED lamps go for the best that you can afford with a reputable name and a good warranty period, at least two years. Check the lumen output, a minimum of 400 is a good benchmark. Check the lighting colour, this may be stated in degrees Kelvin with 6000K a cool white and 3000K a warm white. If using dimmer switches check that the lamp is dimmable, the cheaper ones are sometimes not, you may need to convert the dimmer module to a low wattage Led compatible one, we can help you with this. The alternative is to buy a complete LED downlight module these are generally a brighter option and have good dimming curves without flicker. The good ones use a COB (Chip On Board) LED these offer a single light source without multiple individual LEDs and are virtually indistinguishable from the halogen lamps. They will be fire rated and often IP rated as well (necessary for bathrooms) as they will be a complete fitting this is your chance to select the bezel colour of your choice and adjustable in direction if required, this is often termed as gimballed. A more expensive option than a replacement lamp but generally better performance and lifetimes. Note here if going this route check the hole size in your ceiling against the cutout required for the new fitting. If in any doubt pop in to see us and we can go through all the options and show you samples of each to help you make your choice.

A SHORT TALE ABOUT THE LONG TAIL How the holiday home industry has changed from hundreds of markets of thousands to thousands of markets of hundreds This is a subject I’ve visited many times and to anyone in marketing it’s like saying the sky is blue but it’s still a conversation I end up having in detail with virtually every potential new owner that I meet. Like dog years, internet years are longer than human years but if anything the principle is more relevant today than it was ten years ago. ‘The Long Tail’ is a phrase coined by American journalist Chris Anderson in an article later expanded into an influential business book. Anyone involved in Selling or marketing will have come across the 80/20 rule or Pareto principle which says that 80% of your sales will come from the top 20% of your customers or items that you sell and if you plot this on a graph you end up with a curve falling rapidly and disappearing into the far right - the long tail. In the past this was used as evidence that you should concentrate all your effort on the top 20% and pretty much forget the rest. The internet turned this notion upside down and for everything from books to holidays it’s possible to connect demand and supply for obscure or specific things - so called niche marketing. For those of us in the self catering holiday market this has had a revolutionary effect, mostly for the better. In the last year visits to our site were up by about 20% but visits to the home page were down by a similar amount. This is due to people searching for an ever greater variety of things and so landing on a specific page rather than

navigating from the front of the site. Planning a family get together with sun bathing for the mums & kids and the men love table football? Search for cottage by a beach with table football and Google will do a pretty good job of serving you a list of exactly that with the links going right to the relevant property, not to the front page of the agent. The next thing to realise is that although by definition there are very few of each long tail search term, they are far more valuable on an individual basis than a common more general search term- someone searching for ‘cottage near a beach’ is nowhere near making a decision, the party that want the table football have decided what they want and are very close to getting out the credit card. In the last 12 months we have had visits to the site from more than 17,000 search phrases and two thirds of those were used only once. We can’t possibly create content specifically for most of these but they give us a great insight into what our customers really want and throw up the occasional surprise that would never have occurred to us. For owners the great news is that you can consider marketing individual things about your cottage or adding something attractive and unusual. You can’t change the location of your cottage, add a sea view or parking but here’s some of the top things you can do to attract long tail searches;

1. Accept dogs - a different sort of tail and more mainstream than niche but still the easiest way to increase your bookings 2. Unlimited superfast broadband - probably the most cost effective thing you can do. If you have no WiFi at all then why not consider trying no hot water either to save more money?! 3. Netflix to go with your broadband if you have a smart TV. Small effect but you can share the account with your home so almost free 4. Hot Tub- at the other end of the scale, expensive to install and maintain but give a massive boost to bookings. 5. Games room/second sitting room/cinema roomif you have space in a small room or can convert a summerhouse a TV, games console, darts, table football etc can give a great boost. Often a sleeps 8 will do better as a sleeps 6 with a games room. 6. Big barbecue- a pain to keep clean but one of those multi burner Outback barbecues with all the toys can swing the vote when your customers are deciding between the last few choices on their list. Showroom visit On your first visit to their showroom you will be able to explore each of their 8 displays; looking at the different door styles, finishes, worktops, sinks, taps and AEG appliances. At this stage you can book your free home visit with their team.

Their designer will visit you at home to conduct a consultation where they will measure your kitchen, get more of a sense of the style you are looking for, find out how you use your kitchen and advise on possible solutions. At this stage they will book you in for the presentation.

Initial design and quotation Following their site visit and discussion about your requirements, their designer uses their expertise to create the kitchen plan and quotation back in their showroom.

Held in the presentation area at our showroom, we will run through your plan and quotation on our 40� screen. Sample doors and tops are readily available to give you a true insight in to how your kitchen will look

Once you are happy with everything, they will then need to do a home visit with your chosen installer. Following this visit they will make any final amendments and require a 25% deposit to secure the prices and confirm the order.

STEP 6 Order processing They will then place your order with all their necessary suppliers.

Thrilled by the work done at his home, a Custom Made client insisted we visit and see just how good their service is. So a hop, skip and a car ride away, we arrived at a beautiful New Forest home, to see their exceptional furniture for ourselves and ask the questions we all want answers to, when it comes to fitted furniture. What made you opt for fitted furniture in the first place? I’d tried and tested plenty of pre-made furniture from stores, but nothing quite seemed to fit. The colour was always not quite right, or it was too big or too small, so in the end I thought I’d try an alternative route.

What made you choose Custom Made? In all honesty, I’d contacted a few different companies before finding them. A few had come round to quote, but they never quite fit the bill. Whilst they claimed to be a bespoke service, it seemed that they were always pushing their style onto me, rather than heeding to what I really wanted. From the minute Neill (Co-Director, Custom Made) came round, I knew they would be different. Before making any plans, we sat down over a coffee and he asked me exactly what it was I needed. I left him to go away and come back with some ideas and by the morning after, I had a detailed plan of what they could do and it was spot on. It’s as though my vision had come to life. Everything they designed was in keeping with my needs and the property itself.

THE FIRST TIME BUYERS SURVIVAL GUIDE LESSON 1. ‘KEEPING CALM’ ‘First time buyer’; never have three words caused so much delight and so many traumas. Having recently taken the proverbial step onto the infamous property ladder, I wanted to share a little insight with those taking or in the process of taking the same step. To be clear, I am no expert. Novice would be an accurate description of my level of property knowledge, so don’t expect to find the words like ‘portfolio’, ‘wise investment’ or the dreaded ‘t’ word (tax) lurking in this article and don’t even contemplate and the phrase ‘hard Brexit’. This piece is a me-to-you guide of all the things I wish I had known during my first property purchase. If I can help just one person from a mojito induced breakdown, surrounded by crushed Doritos and broken dreams (ah, memories), then I will have succeeded.

ESTABLISH YOUR BOUNDARIES

Rarely does a sale go through without a little back and forth. You might offer too little and likewise the seller might

try their luck at negotiating over the asking price. We’re all in it to win it, so it’s really important to set your limits firmly in place. Sit down with whomever you are buying with, or perhaps a member of your family or a friend and decide what the property is worth to you, and ultimately what you can realistically afford. Don’t disclose this information to the seller (or even the estate agent) right away, but knowing where you are comfortable will help you make good decisions. It can even work in your favor as a bargaining tool when it comes to the later stage of negotiations.

IT’S BEEN EMOTIONAL People always tell you that buying a house is one of the most stressful things you’ll ever do, and it is, but not exactly in the way you think. Ultimately, home purchasing should be a fairly straightforward trade, but what makes it complicated is us humans. Perspective is your best friend, for example; whilst your on one end sobbing over a new asking

price that you can’t afford, the seller may well be going through a terrible situation of their own, forced to up the price by unforeseen circumstances. It’s not always the case and there are some nasty people out there, but try your very best to be realistic. Don’t attach emotional ties (I know it’s hard), treat every decision as business to business.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP There’s no shame in asking for help. This is a complicated process and one you’ve not tackled before, but you’re doing it! Estate agents and solicitors will use a lot of terminology that you aren’t going to get —I didn’t. So just ask for it to be explained. You’re making an incredibly large purchase, if you were spending the same in a couture fashion store, they’d be fanning you and handing you glasses of champagne, answering every question you had. The same goes for family, despite their sometimes overly concerned nature, they do know stuff.

TAKE OFF THE ROSE COLOURED GLASSES When you walk into your dream home it’s hard to see the wood through the trees. If you can, regularly visit the home that you are looking to buy, study all of the little nooks and crannies. Politely ask the estate agent or homeowner if they’d give you a minute alone, this will give you time to really nose around. Run your hands over walls to check for any obvious damp, walk around the floor to check for loose floorboards, check the windows open…all of these little things will help you easily way up the pros and cons, and maybe allow some bargaining power over the price.

GIVE YOURSELF A PAT ON THE BACK My final piece of advice is to give yourself a hand. You are embarking on an incredible new stage in your life. Yes it’ll be tough, but the end result will be totally worth it. Words By Charlotte Williams

NEW HMO RULES BY APRIL 2018! Tougher laws are expected to be coming in this April 2018 around HMO’s (houses in multiple occupation). Currently you only require a licence if you have 5 or more unrelated occupants over 3 stories or more. A Government consultation exercise has been ongoing on proposals for England to remove the 3-story rule and include single and two storey buildings. It is also proposing a room must be a minimum of 6.52 square metres for one person, and 10.23 square metres for two people. The measurement of these rooms cannot include areas where the ceiling is below 1.5 metres in height. Presently there ae around 60,000 licensed HMO, this is likely to increase to 175,000 properties. Any landlord applying for a license will need to prove that they are a “fit and proper person”, a test which is to be tightened up under these proposals, and will likely include criminal record checks. Fines for not obtaining a license for an HMO will possibly be unlimited. Whilst there is likely to be a grace period of six months once the legislation is introduced, any landlords who have not sorted out their licensing requirement when this period runs out could find themselves on the receiving end of criminal prosecutions, and civil penalties of up to £30,000 – so it’s a significant impact to consider. This change is likely to come as a surprise to many landlords as it will almost certainly require them to do work in their properties. The changes are intended to improve the overall standards and safety of lettings in England generally as the government tries to shake up rogue landlords. Although more landlords with properties meeting the above criteria will pay more in fees to their local authority, working to improved standards in their properties may result in more favourable mortgage applications. Other proposals could include rules on storage facilities and waste disposal. STYLING; FOLLOWING THE ANCIENT LAWS OF FENG SHUI Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese set of rules that help us to balance our living environments for ultimate peace and harmony—but you probably already knew that seeing as many popular interior designers still use these rules (at least loosely) to shape homes in this era. With the serene nature of this 2018 interior trend, it couldn’t hurt to follow some of these original laws for ultimate harmony in our homes. Let’s start with the basics: Yin and Yang. Everything, from nature to colour, season to time of day; has a counterpart. If Yin, for example, is dark then Yang is bright. If Yin is curved then Yang is Geometric and so on and so forth…in short, Feng Shui is a game of equilibrium. UPDATED GOLF SV

The Volkswagen Golf SV - a bigger brother of the standard Golf hatchback - has been revised and upgraded and the new version is now on sale priced from £20,475. In the SV, the driver and passengers sit higher than in the Golf hatch and Golf Estate, the model has a longer wheelbase and sliding rear seat. The Discover Navigation unit in the revised Golf SV is up from 6.5-inches to 8.0-inchs, and there is also a CD player, DAB radio and simultaneous pairing of two mobile smartphones via Bluetooth. New bumpers at the front and the rear sharpen the styling. At the rear, the lights are all-LED and the diffuser trim has been revised. Additional technology includes Emergency Assist, which attempts to awaken the driver if they become unresponsive and, if necessary, will bring the Golf SV to a complete stop with the hazard warning lights flashing. This is available on SE, SE Nav and GT trims. Park Assist 3.0 adds the functionality of manoeuvring out of parallel parking spaces, and Trailer Assist joins the Golf SV tech line-up for the first time. Joining the SE Nav and GT trims is Volkswagen’s new 1.5-litre TSI EVO engine that features Active Cylinder Technology. This means the engine will shut down two of its four cylinders to reduce fuel consumption whenever possible. A total of four turbocharged petrol engines are joined by two turbocharged diesel units, and five or six-speed manual gearboxes are available, as well as a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.

ROAD TEST: FIAT 124 SPIDER Fiat’s 124 Spider is a charismatic two-seater convertible sports car, with quick performance and agile handling, yet a relatively rare sight on UK roads, writes NICK FLETCHER. Priced from £ £21,050, its big-selling main competitor is the legendary Mazda MX-5 yet people may be surprised to learn that beneath its smart Italian suit, the Spider runs on an MX-5 platform! Fiat has cleverly re-designed all the bodywork to give the Spider its own distinctive look and personality, tweaked the suspension and steering and added its own 140 hp 1.4 litre turbo-petrol engine. The result is a beautifully-styled eye-catching two seater with zesty performance and offering a huge fun factor. The designers have managed to give the Spider elements of 1960s retro styling yet with bang-up-to-date engineering and technology. My test model was the flagship Lusso Plus, priced at £25,050 and very well equipped, including 17-inch alloys, heated leather seats, upgraded BOSE sound system, auto lights and

wipers, auto climate control, 7- inch touch-screen, Bluetooth, sat-nav, connectivity, push-button start, LED headlights and rear-view camera. The cabin, like in most small sports cars, has room for two adults but minimal stowage space, not even any door-pockets. There is a useful lockable box behind the front seats and a 140-litre boot, just big enough for two squashy bags. The fabric hood is manually operated (it can be done with one hand) and there are two rollover hoops for additional safety. Top speed is 134 mph, the 0-60 mph time a quick 7.5 seconds. Fuel economy is 44.1 mpg combined. It’s responsive acceleration, precise steering, slick gearshifts and well-set suspension deliver a terrific driving experience, zippy, grippy and agile – just what you want from a sports car. You can live with this car as daily transport if you always travel light though I think many buyers would probably have a Spider as a second car or as weekend fun-car, and in those roles it is absolutely perfect.

ROAD TEST: VOLKSWAGEN UP! While there is a current trend to make new cars bigger, add more equipment and of course boost the price, there is still a significant number of customers who just want simple affordable daily transport, and the Volkswagen Up! neatly meets this requirement, writes NICK FLETCHER. Priced from just £9,135, available in three and five door format, and with an economical petrol engine, the Up! has a lot to offer, including the VW brand’s outstanding build quality. The Up! is sturdy yet light-weight which helps the 1.0 litre 59 hp engine returns over 60 mpg, and the car has an agility which makes it perfect for urban driving. The entry level model has limited kit but does have features such as remote locking, power steering and electric front windows. The mid-range Move Up! model – the one I tested - adds extra kit such as alloy wheels, air-conditioning and variable-height boot floot. In five-door form, it costs £10,180. Boot space is 251 litres, among the largest in the class, and folding rear seats boost it to 959 litres. Re-vamped in 2016, the Up! now has a more elegant, more upmarket look, The cabin is surprisingly roomy, with decent headroom in the rear even for taller passengers. You can connect a smart phone to provide sat-nav and other features, and VW has also added some customisation upgrades, allowing buyers to personalise the interior appearance.

Out and about, the small engine is not noisy, the steering is light and accurate, the 5-speed gearshift slick, the ride quality very comfortable. For a car in this sector, the Up! comes over as quite refined. There are no diesel versions but the 1.0 petrol units are available with differing power outputs and there is also an electric version. The 59 hp engine test model delivers a 0-60 mph time of 14.4 seconds (though it feels quicker) and a top speed of 100 mph so can deal with motorway cruising if required. Fuel consumption is 64.1 mpg combined and emissions are 101 g/km. Rivals include Toyota Aygo, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10, Skoda Citigo, Citroen C1, and SEAT Mii but the Up! appears more robust and more refined than most, and tends to have a higher re-sale value.

ULTIMATE VAUXHALL GRANDLAND

ROAD TEST: HONDA JAZZ SE When Honda created the current Jazz model, it aimed to make it appealing to younger buyers while retaining the loyality of its older customers, and its designers have achieved this, writes NICK FLETCHER. The Jazz now has smoother, more youthful styling, more connectivity features and some personalisation options all of which should help lower the age profile of its buyers. The Jazz competes in a tough sector which includes Fiesta, Corsa, Polo, and Clio but the micro-MPV character of the Jazz gives it specific appeal – its cabin is more spacious than most and its easy-move ‘Magic Seats’ score it top marks for day-to-day practicality. Prices start at £14,115 for an S version but my test model, the better-equipped SE, is the popular choice, featuring cruise control, auto lights and wipers, alloy wheels, touchscreen infotainment, parking sensors, DAB radio, Bluetooth and connectivity on its kit-list. It costs £15,615.

The Jazz uses a 1.3 litre 101 hp petrol engine with standard 6-speed manual gearbox (a CVT auto version is available). The 0-60 mph time is a modest 11.5 seconds, top speed of 118 mph. Fuel economy is 55.4 mpg combined. Emissions are 116 g/km. Underway, the Jazz offers a smooth civilised drive, with composed handling and a very comfortable ride thanks to a revised suspension set-up. It is nimble in traffic and when parking, and has good all-round visibility. Inside, the dashboard is logically laid out, with a centre touch screen which is easy to operate and quick to respond. Seating is supportive and there is good headroom even in the rear. The large boot capacity - 354 litres – can be enlarged to a massive 1,314 litres with drop-down rear seats which form a flat load floor. Such space and practicality is an ace card for the Jazz, which also benefits from Honda’s outstanding record for reliability.

Vauxhall has introduced a new top-of-the-range Grandland X, called Ultimate, and priced from £33,995. It has a high level of Standard equipment and also debuts a new 175 hp 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Grandland X already offers assistance and comfort features including Dual Zone Climate Control, Lane Departure Warning and Rear Parking Sensors, but the Ultimate version adds 19-inch BiColour alloys, Automatic Cruise Control and a Denon premium sound system. Also standard are black roof and door mirrors, alloy sports pedals, heated steering wheel, 360-degree Panoramic Camera and LED Adaptive Forward Lighting Pack with projector headlights. The Grandland X Ultimate also introduces Vauxhall’s new top-of-the-range 2.0-litre diesel engine, which provides a 0-60mph time of 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 133 mph. CO2 emissions are 128g/ km and fuel economy is 57.6mpg combined.

NEW MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS CABRIOLET Prices for the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet have been revealed, starting at £115,910 for the S 560 AMG Line, with the AMG S 63 available from £140,610 and the AMG S 65 costing £197,510. Mercedes describes the new model as “the epitome of luxury motoring, mixing effortless performance with impressive refinement.” The car features a multi-layer folding soft-top which operates in 20 seconds. The entry S 560 replaces the outgoing S 500, and introduces a new 4.0-litre biturbo V8 petrol unit which produces 469 hp and is mated to a nine-speed auto gearbox. Top speed 155 mph, the 0 to 60 mph 4.6 seconds. It emits 204 g/km of CO2, and delivers up to 31.4 mpg combined. In addition to the standard equipment on S 560 AMG Line, the S 63 adds Seat Comfort package, including massage function; Driving Assistance package; sports exhaust system; sports suspension, based on Airmatic suspension; sports seats finished in Nappa leather; Panamericana grille; and 20-inch alloy wheels. The Driving Assistance package – standard on S 63 and S 65 – is optionally available for £2,580 and offers additional features including active steering, braking, speed limits and distance systems, plus Active Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assist.

The wheels are then prepared, dressed and filled to deal with any damage to the rim edges and the face. (Note: they do not deal with buckled or badly dented wheels as these are safety related structural repairs and wheels should be written off and replaced). Next the wheels are gently heat treated to remove any air from the alloy and a first stage powder coat finish is applied and then cured for a set time period. After this, if the wheel is having a “special” or “bespoke” finish, the wet-in-wet procedure takes place (e.g. special paint and clearcoat finish). The wheels are then automatically subjected to a further

thermal treatment. The lacquer coat is not only applied to enhance the finish, but to also protect the alloy wheel against environmental influences (UV radiation, salt, moisture, dirt, etc.) at all points.

TURMERIC: HEALTH FAD OR HEALTH FACT? It may not actually be a miracle spice You know the drill. A new superfood crests over the horizon and we scramble to lay our hands on it. Fastforward a few months and the big chain stores and cafes are offering some version of it in smoothies or salads. Turmeric has been making its way through this process since early 2016, although the spice has been used in Indian culture for centuries as a natural anti-inflammatory. So is it the spice of life, or should we be more sceptical? We ask the experts...

WHAT HEALTH BENEFITS IS TURMERIC PROVEN TO PROVIDE? Doctify Nutritionist Dr Claudia Gravaghi says the key ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. It “has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.”

In terms of its proven benefits, “research has shown that turmeric extract can help alleviate pain and improve function in people with osteoarthritis”, says Dr Gravaghi. “There is also preliminary evidence that curcumin may help reduce pain in joints and swelling, of people with rheumatoid arthritis, and may reduce inflammation-driven cancer.”

Elizabeth Wall, a nutritionist with Holland & Barrett adds that curcumin “helps to neutralise free radicals, which are basically unstable atoms that can cause damage to cells, and contribute to ageing and disease”.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER RESEARCH STUDIES GOING ON? Doctify Dermatologist Dr Sweta Rai says the chemical could have positive effects on skin conditions: “High-level, reliable human trials that further investigate tumeric’s use on conditions including acne, atopic eczema, photodamage of photoageing of the skin and alopecia, are currently underway.” Due to its popularity, trials of turmeric and its benefits are on the rise, including trials related to diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and depression. Wall says this research in its infancy but looking positive. Double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials will be required to definitively prove any benefits of curcumin.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO GET IT INTO OUR SYSTEMS? It’s not that simple. “I don’t think the main focus is on how much turmeric we should be using, more about the

form in which we should be using it,” says Wall. This is because curcumin only makes up between 2 and 6% of turmeric. As curcumin exists in such low levels in turmeric, it’s hard to measure how much you are taking when you stir it into a latte or cook it into a curry. There are also issues with the body’s ability to absorb it. “The bright yellow-orange colour of turmeric comes mainly from fatsoluble, polyphenolic pigments known as curcuminoids, says Dr Gravaghi. “When something is fat-soluble, that means it dissolves in fat. Without fat, the active component in turmeric, curcumin, has a difficult time making it past the stomach, into the small intestine, and into the blood where it can offer the greatest benefits. “The best way to take turmeric is with fatty ingredients such as in curry or coconut milk.” Research has also shown that black pepper improves absorption of curcumin into the body. When it comes to your skin, Dr Rai says: “If you’re using turmeric to brighten and enhance your complexion, or

reduce photodamage, then applying it to the skin is better.” Wall says that taking the curcumin extract, rather than turmeric in food or drink, may be more beneficial if you are taking it for a therapeutic purpose, because you can track the amount you are taking.

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS? “Typically, it’s very well tolerated when using it in food, because you’re only using a small amount,” says Wall. However, if you are using excessively large amounts, that could cause issues. The most commonly reported is digestive upset, and other symptoms can include nausea, dizziness and diarrhoea. “There is no known allergy to turmeric per se,” Dr Rai adds. “However, if used on the skin directly in concentrated form, and left on for a long period of time, this may cause contact irritation of the skin. WHY ICELAND IS THE IDEAL WELLBEING HOLIDAY

VOLCANOES, HORSE RIDES & GEOTHERMAL BATHS... It’s well known for its superb scenery, but Iceland is also a great option for a mind and body break. Erin Cardiff prepares to wind down in the land of fire and ice. There is a word in Icelandic gluggaveour - that literally translates as window weather. You know, the type that’s bracingly cold to be out in but comforting to watch from behind a pane? I think about it as I sit in the glassfronted Northern Lights Bar of ION Adventure Hotel - an hour out of Reykjavik - looking out at the almost lunar landscape. Sure enough, a feeling of cosy contentment washes over me and in that moment, I know that when it comes to wellness breaks, there’s no better destination than Iceland.

Though Reykjavik - the country’s capital - is only a three-hour flight from London Gatwick, it may as well be a different world. The remarkably flat landscape stretches for miles in every direction. It’s barren without being boring. And being somewhere so vast is oddly calming.

NATURAL BEAUTY EQUALS INSTANT CALM With so much natural beauty on offer, the perfect way to unwind in Iceland is to spend some time in the great outdoors - or several hundred metres beneath it. I drive half an hour out of Reykjavik to embark on the world-famous Inside the Volcano tour. It starts with a 3km trek across a lava field, and with thick fog hanging in the air, I can’t even see the dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano until I’m mere meters away.

I’m attached to a rope and harness before climbing into the windowcleaner-style lift that takes me down to see the inner workings of the earth. After a six-minute descent, we’re underground. Though it’s still only 4C, it’s warmer down here and completely silent. Strategically placed lights illuminate the rich colours of the jagged rocks which were once magma. I’m told by a guide that the chamber I stand in is roughly the size of three full basketball courts, and that the Statue of Liberty would comfortably fit here. This far below the world’s surface, everyday stresses seem so far away.

HORSE RIDING SOOTHES THE SOUL One of the oldest and most unique breeds in the world, Icelandic horses are famed for their strength and stamina. Tour company Solhestar take me on an hour-long ride through a cluster of craters in a 5,200-yearold lava field known locally as the Raudholar (Red Hills).

As I float in the 38C waters, rich in natural minerals like silica and sulphur, a complimentary mud mask smeared across my face, I reflect on my time in Iceland. I smile to myself as I realise that, after only a few days here, I believe a little more in magic too.

on the doorstep of the bustling capital, the serene landscape can’t help but inspire a feeling of relaxation.

FRESH FOOD MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD Of course, wellness isn’t all about nourishing the mind. It’s about the body, too. Fridheimar, a family-run farm on the touristic Golden Circle route (which loops around some of Iceland’s most stunning natural sights) has opened one of its four tomato greenhouses to the public. Rather than waste tomatoes they don’t sell, they turn them into delicious dishes in an on-site restaurant. Sat amongst vine leaves, I feast on soup, ravioli and tomato ice cream, washed down with a Healthy Mary made of green tomato, honey, ginger and lime. As a vegetarian, I relish the novelty of being able to eat anything on the menu. Everything is fresh, simple and downright delicious.

GEOTHERMAL BATHS ARE PURE BLISS No visit to Iceland is complete without a trip to the Blue Lagoon. Just 15 minutes from Keflavik airport, it’s an ideal entry - or in my case, exit - point to the island. One of the country’s top attractions, it hosts up to 4,000 people a day. HOW TO BE YOGA BODY CONFIDENT ACCORDING TO JESSAMYN STANLEY Breathing, stretching and selfawareness are the basics of yoga, and yet somewhere along the line we’ve lost sight of them, Jessamyn Stanley tells Keeley Bolger

she spend her teens vaulting in the gym. She’s honest and, if you want an answer to whether or not you’ll pass wind during yoga (you will), she’s your go-to woman.

Yoga body. Innocuous-sounding, but peel it back and the preconceptions are there.

So when she says ‘every body yoga’ she means it. Like many of us, she has felt the laser-like gaze on her in the studio, but hopes in writing the book, more people will feel encouraged to practice.

“Until the turn of the 21st century, the yoga community in the West has been characterised by people who have the money and the time to devote themselves to it, and that has tended to fall into the category of wealthy, predominantly white, slender people, and even more specifically, women,” explains Jessamyn Stanley, yoga teacher and author of new book Every Body Yoga. “The reality is that, that has nothing to do with yoga. The truth of yoga has absolutely nothing to do with body size or skin colour or physical ability [or] gender expression. It’s literally about connecting to your breath and looking within yourself.” Stanley, from North Carolina, describes herself as ‘fat’. She’s not from a moneyed background, nor did

PROBLEM ONE: WHAT IF EVERYBODY LOOKS AT ME IN MY YOGA CLASS? “One of the most common questions I get is, ‘I’m worried that everyone’s going to stare at me.’ And I’m like, ‘They are going to stare at you. That’s the first thing you need to get over before you even go to the class because you can’t spend the whole time thinking, ‘Everybody’s looking at me.’ Everybody is looking at you.”

SO WHAT CAN I DO? “If you’re that concerned about it, don’t go to a live class. Take an online class. Sometimes it really is that

intimidating to be in a space with other people. If you take an online class, you don’t need to have a teacher in the room with you, staring and telling you what to do. If you have a space that feels good for you, that’s really all you need.”

PROBLEM TWO: I CAN’T STOP THINKING ABOUT HOW I LOOK DURING YOGA PRACTICE. “We spend so much of our lives asking each other, ‘How do I look? Does this look OK?’ It’s, ‘How do I appear to others, not how do I feel?’ If every time you put on clothes you said, ‘How do I feel?’ you’d walk out of the house wearing wild things. “But the point is that no one is having the experience you’re having, so if it feels good to you, that’s all that matters. And nowhere is that more true than on a yoga mat.”

“It’s so different to say, ‘How do I feel?’ Because ‘how do I feel’ might mean I need to pay more attention to this area, or I need to internalise this. That experience is so much more worthwhile and so much more telling. You can mine that experience for truth way more than you can the question of how you look.”

PROBLEM THREE: WHAT IF I CAN’T DO ANY OF THE YOGA POSES? “I used to feel self-conscious that people were looking at me because I’m larger-bodied and the teacher would always be like, ‘Have you done yoga before?’ and give me a lot of attention I didn’t want. “[Even now] I still have to talk myself down. I will be in a class and think ‘Man, I feel very self-conscious here.’”

WHAT CAN I DO? “Don’t look at other people; close your eyes. Find ways to slowly tune into yourself because no matter who else is in the room, it’s your practice. Even if you don’t get out of shavasana [relaxation pose]. Even if you don’t move. Even if you stay in table top position and you come out of downward facing dog after a breath every single time, it’s fine, because that’s your practice. “You don’t have to give an explanation to anybody else. Hello again fitness fam’. Lots going on, as usual, that I want to inform you about. We’ve just had 5 fighters out on one of the best shows in the South, Fast and Furious in Southampton, hosted and put together by the Look Borai/Exile team. It’s a great show and incredibly well run, with some fantastic matches from novice to pros. Our guys did fantastically well with some hard fights, but the lions always step up to the challenge and give 100%. Some of our fighters were literally taking their fights with only mere weeks of training (intense though I must say). Going through their fight camps with them and then culminating in cornering them for the fight is such a fantastic experience, and I have to say makes us incredibly proud. If you’ve ever thought that you would possibly like to try it, even once, we are definitely the gym to

come to. We have absolute beginners and we also have experienced fighters and to be honest, you never stop learning in a game like this. All coaches and corner teams have the fighters utmost safety in mind and a Show like fast and Furious is a fantastic night out even if you’re just there to watch and support. If this couldn’t be further from what you want to do and you only want to use your training as self defense, a bit of fun, or to get fit, we are also the gym for that too. We have a new course in beginners Thai boxing starting in January. The course will last 6 weeks and cover all basics from stance to striking and pad holding drills (pad holding can be just as important as actually hitting them). This is a great way for anyone with little or no experience to gain the basics in Thai boxing and feel more confident to be able to go on to any of our other striking classes.

As I always say it’s just walking through the door that’s the hard bit and we completely understand, that’s’ why we are one of the most friendly gyms in the South, teamed with a great atmosphere.
