Cobalt, royal blue, navy and azure rather than softer shades," advises Marc Petring, head of marketing at furniture chain Dwell. "It takes confidence, but you can dip your toe into blues by experimenting with one statement piece of furniture, a rug or blue accessories. Too much blue can be oppressive so be sure to mix it up with whites or greys." Rich, sultry, sophisticated inky blues through to pale pastels can all play a part in rooms. So don't be cautious, dive right in!

"When applied to large areas, deep blue is sometimes perceived as cold and distant, especially in hallways and corridors," says Louise Smith. "Lighter blues can be a safer option, especially as a background colour, as they appear to recede, making a room seem larger and raising a low ceiling." Blue notes Have fun with blue by adding quirky accessories or finishing details such as lampshades, or even door handles. "Blues have always been a popular colour for interiors and until recently the trend was for pale hues with a lean towards eau de nil," says Victoria Wright, style advisor at HomeSense, which features a constantly changing range of reduced designer homeware. "This summer will see a stronger, more playful blue emerge as the fashionable choice - it's somewhere between duck egg and navy. It is brighter and more lively but, equally, slightly more difficult to blend with other colours." Blues can enliven a pale grey or cream-themed room, she says, or can also look striking against darker, more arresting colour schemes such as fuchsia pink, black, and even silver metallic. That is the warning from many financial advisors, as leading retailers predict family finances will be stretched as never before by the festive celebrations. Supermarket chain Morrison's says a third of its customers already have no disposable income left over at the end of the month, and that's before this winter's massive fuel bills kick in. Against that background, it is hardly surprising that more people are taking out 'payday loans' to tide themselves over until their monthly pay cheque hits their bank account. Loans to consumers in this 'high-cost credit sector' could already top £9 billion. Ferratum, the self-styled largest online microloan lender in Europe which launched in Britain in July, thinks more than 2 million UK households already hold 'payday' loans. Ian Porter, Ferratum UK sales and marketing manager says: "Microloans are probably the fastest growth area in the financial services sector. "People like the flexibility. They borrow £50-£300 to repay within a maximum 45 days. Consumers are increasingly turning away from long term loans with traditional lenders." By limiting first timers to a maximum £100 loan, Ferratum claims the risks are carefully controlled. Customers - applying online or by a mobile - are told upfront the full cost of their loan, with no hidden charges. Customers can use an online loan calculator to work out the amount they need, the repayment period - up to a maximum of 45 days - and total cost. Only then do they apply for a loan, after which Ferratum's customer services team runs a credit check before advising in minutes whether the application is successful. It looks easy, and sounds simple. That's the problem. Steve Rees at debt consultant Vincent Bond says: "This is a valid service to provide short-term loans, but we are seeing people in serious trouble with 10-12 of these short term loans, each one between £300 and £400. "If you walk into a high street shop with a payslip and some identification, you usually get your money - and you can cross the road to repeat the process three or four times. "Once your debts pass £2,000 or so, and you can't pay back, interest rates become crippling." As the current issue of Moneywise magazine explains, payday loans are a highly controversial topic: with quoted interest rates on loans from 450% to 4,214%, there are widespread fears that payday loans are too complex for many people to handle. These astronomic interest rates usually arise because they are measured over a full year, when

most payday loans last for only a few weeks. Steve Perry wrote a book, 'When Payday Loans Go Wrong', to detail the saga which started when he took a loan for £250 to pay for a holiday in June 2009. Trying to avoid trouble in making repayments, he collected 64 payday loans from 12 companies owing, at one point, a total of £22,000. "If payday loans are used for days to borrow a small amount, they could be a very useful form of credit," he says. A £150 loan from Wonga, for example, costs £177 if repaid in a fortnight - effectively an interest rate of 18%. It's cheaper than putting the money on an unauthorised overdraft. But Perry found that when clients hit trouble, many companies suggest further loans to cover ballooning repayments. It's a devastating trick. Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy claims some payday loan firms target Armed Forces personnel and ex-servicemen who may be struggling to manage their finances. Some companies, such as Quickquid.co.uk, have special sites for members of the Armed Services. Another website to attract criticism is www. easymilitaryloans.co.uk because it does not provide 'fixed' interest rates. Many firms believe that they fill a vital gap in these difficult days. Gary Miller-Cheevers launched Speedeloans in February 2010, and wants to lend nearly £20 million in 2011. His typical customer is aged 32, earns £21,000 a year and plans to borrow £200 for a maximum 19 days. Total cost of that is about £42, an interest rate which works out at 2,727% APR, measured over a year. But Miller-Cheevers says somebody who gets six direct debits bounced because of a lack of funds in their account could face total bank charges approaching £200 - so the short term loan makes sense for them. Speedeloans figures suggest that over half its customers are professionals, with more than 25% employed as nurses, doctors or teachers. Around 7% are solicitors, accountants or financial advisors, who all enjoy above average wages. Around 76% of Speedeloans customers repay the money within the allotted time. Some 18% are "a bit tardy" and can be expected to repay after "chasing up". Around 6% don't repay, so their loans are written off - a reminder that the company still sometimes loans to people it should have refused. Miller-Cheevers says: "Reputable lenders work according to the new Lending Code for Small Cash Advances, drawn up by the Consumer Finance Association (CFA) and launched in the House of Commons this July. "As a company, we fully support this new Code because it will give confidence to consumers, and also mean than the less-than-ethical small loan providers are made accountable for their actions.


"Responsible lenders like us get tarred with the same brush, when what we are actually doing is proving a useful and fair service to working people with temporary cash flow problems. "We always show applicants the total cost of repayment clearly and prominently, before they apply for the loan. There are no hidden fees and charges, and if our customers fail to repay a loan swiftly, we cap the interest and try to reach an agreement with them." However, he admits: "There is a sector of this business in which companies dress themselves up as lenders and then trawl the internet to target people who are less than financially savvy." Rees confirms that problems can be caused by new companies which have muscled into the market. He says: "When we put together plans designed to get people out of trouble, main creditors are usually switched on to debt management techniques and keen to reach an agreement. But the short term loan companies are not, and may take a harsher view. "If there are ten creditors in our plan, and two or three won't play ball, the whole plan can be wrecked. Many short term loan companies have not been in the game long; if they see a monthly payslip for £2,000, they hand out loans of £400, sometimes because they are in a small franchise operation with tight sales targets. "If a customer signs for the money, and denies that they are already in a debt management plan, that is fraud in itself. The only long-term answer to this problem is stronger controls on how loans are given, with a more efficient credit scoring system than we have at present." A Which? Money investigation reported in September that some companies evade existing regulations by forming subsidiary companies. Others won't detail interest rates anywhere on their website. There is also a suggestion that unscrupulous payday loan firms circulate details of the most vulnerable consumers, persuading them to borrow more than they are ever likely to repay. The lobby group Consumer Focus wants tighter rules on payday loans: it suggests limiting the number of loans or rollovers available to consumers to a maximum five per year; tighter credit reference checks to block multiple loans and, possibly, capping interest rates which lenders are allowed to charge. Rees says: "Payday loans and overdrafts can appeal to consumers needing a quick fix until payday as they provide instant cashflow, bypassing the formality of High Street borrowing. But the price may be sky-high interest rates. "Perhaps more people should look at their expenditure, instead of resorting to costly borrowing when funds dry up." As Moneywise magazine points out: "There are numerous ways of accessing cheaper cash

which are likely to be cheaper than payday loans: for example, your current account may have an interest-free overdraft facility, or it may even be cheaper to get a cash advance on your credit card. "If you withdraw £250 on an HSBC credit card and pay it back within 14 days, you would pay £12.13 interest, whereas the same loan with Wonga.com could cost nearly £41. Poundnotes :: The most popular reason for personal loan applications in 2011 was to consolidate existing debts, presumably at a cheaper rate, says Freedom Finance, a loan comparison site which compares actual not typical or representative loan rates for unsecured and secured loans without damaging the applicant's credit score. Consolidation was the main reason given for almost 48% of those surveyed, followed by home improvement (21.8%) and car loans (19%). 'Luxury' expenditures like holidays (2.3%) and weddings (1.8%) were in the minority. Nicola Winter, managing director at Freedom Finance, says: "The need to consolidate existing debts might reflect a change in personal circumstances, with many people losing jobs or struggling with mortgages as credit gets harder to secure. "Borrowers therefore try to find alternative solutions via comparison sites like Freedom Finance to find the best loan deals. "It is also interesting that people are improving their homes at the expense of other luxuries, most probably to be well-positioned for when the housing market recovers. "Whatever the reason for a loan, consumers need prompt, transparent and accurate information to make the right decisions about their capacity to borrow." :: Looking for a safe fund for an equity ISA investment in 2011/2? Andy Parsons at The Share Centre tips Invesco's Perpetual Global Equity Income fund. "By scouring stock markets for global income, investors are exposed to a more diverse range of dividend producing companies, as well as true diversification across multiple business models, geography and sectors," he says. The Invesco Perpetual Global Equity Income fund has 37% of its money in the US. Strong US corporate balance sheets, an ageing population and changes to US taxation rules still make the region attractive.

Parsons says: "With a bias towards consumer discretionary, consumer staples, health care and industrials, the fund also has significant exposure to Switzerland, Britain, Japan and Australia. "The fund currently yields around 3.67% from a portfolio of 68 stocks. In 2010, the fund returned 15.59%, against a global sector average of 15.78% and in the year to date has returned 0.11%, against a sector average of -10.18%." Analysis by independent financial research company Defaqto also found that only five savings accounts do so based on the Retail Prices Index (RPI, 5.4%). Defaqto's data suggest that higher rate (40% and 50%) taxpayers have only two Cash ISAs available to beat inflation: the Nottingham BS Starter ISA (paying 5% on a maximum monthly saving of £445 per month) and the Yorkshire BS Protected Capital Account Inflation Linked 10 Plan Cash ISA (six year term paying 100% of growth in RPI). Only six accounts give a basic rate taxpayer a real return based on CPI (five, based on RPI). Only 23 accounts available give a non-taxpayer a real return based on CPI (12, based on RPI). David Black, Defaqto's insight analyst for banking, says: "Savers continue to be hit by the dual effects of high inflation and the historically low base rate. "Savers should review savings on a regular basis, look to use their ISA allowance, and take advantage of introductory bonuses and guaranteed minimum rates. They might also consider fixed rate bonds to get higher returns, if they are happy to tie money up for fixed periods. "Otherwise, they should pay off expensive debts such as store cards, credit cards, overdrafts. Higher rate taxpayers should consider an offset mortgage as it effectively pays tax-free interest on savings at the mortgage rate." :: With the latest official inflation report showing the headline rate of inflation easing from 5.2% to 5%, older households are hardest hit by rising energy prices, says Alliance Trust's monthly study of inflation rates. It reckons 65-74 year olds and over-75s faced an inflation rate of 5.8% in October, against 6.1% in September. Soaring gas and electricity prices were mainly to blame. Increases in the cost of utilities have greater impact on the old. Over-75s allocate around 9% of household spending to gas and electricity, against just 4% among under-30s. THE FANG CLUB British star Robert Pattinson reflects on how playing a heart-throb vampire has changed his life and reveals his plans beyond Twilight.


EXTRA TIME ROBERT PATTINSON Robert Douglas Thomas Pattinson was born in London on May 13, 1986. He admits not knowing what he let himself in for with the first Twilight film. "The whole cast had no idea it would explode so much." He dismisses being described as one of the world's sexiest men by saying: "The whole thing is created." He enjoyed shooting the honeymoon scenes on a remote Brazilian island. "I didn't have to spend ages taking my make-up off every day because I just jumped in the sea." The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 is in cinema's now.

Three years ago Robert Pattinson was a littleknown actor with a small part in two Harry Potter films and a handful of TV roles behind him. Fast forward to 2011 and the British actor - known as 'R-Patz' to his devotees - can't even step out his front door without feeling paranoid about being accosted and stalked by fans. "A lot of the time, you think people are way crazier than they are. You think they've been waiting for five hours when they've only been there for five minutes," he says. "I was in London once and no one found out where I was staying the whole time I was there, and then this girl, waiting in the courtyard of the hotel in complete pitch blackness, called out my name - and I thought, 'This is it. I'm going to get killed'," he adds, grinning at the memory. "The thing that drives me crazy is if people follow you when you leave the building. As soon as I lose those people, I'm fine." The reason for all this fear? The film juggernaut that is The Twilight Saga, a spellbinding love triangle between vampire Edward Cullen, Bella Swan and werewolf Jacob Black. Based on Stephanie Meyers' best-selling books, the three films, with the eagerly anticipated fourth instalment Breaking Dawn Part 1 about to hit screens, have propelled the lead cast members - Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner - to global stardom. Running his fingers through his tousled hair, 25-year-old Pattinson says: "I just have to remember that it is all a job and that the craziness, as overwhelming as it seems sometimes, won't last forever." It's little surprise that Pattinson, with his finely chiselled features and lean stature, has become such a heart-throb. Yet fame has not gone to his head. The London-born actor, who now splits his time between the UK and the US, takes his new life in his stride. "I guess my actual life hasn't changed that much - it's busier. The only time I found it really difficult to cope was when I tried to go to the same places I went to before, and live exactly the same life, and it's impossible," he admits. "But life changes and you have to adapt to

that. You can either let yourself go completely insane or just deal with it. My family and friends haven't been any different the entire time. It's lucky that I didn't do too much beforehand." Shot back-to-back, the first of the final two Twilight films, with the second part to be released next November, sees Bella and Edward taking their relationship to the next level. "Breaking Dawn begins with preparations for Bella and Edward's wedding and the chaos that ensues on their honeymoon, and the inevitable downfall that always happens in Twilight movies," says Pattinson. "The wedding scene is a relatively momentous moment for the series. I think Edward's proposed to her about 50 times now, so it's been building up and building up. "Edward's excited. He's always been obsessed about marriage. It's what he has wanted for a long time. I think it's one of the first points of stability in Edward and Bella's relationship." Their honeymoon on a beautiful island in Brazil "starts off quite nice and just gets progressively worse", reveals Pattinson. "It just goes downhill after they have sex. Edward gets to relax - but only for a second. It's like a set-up so he can get punished again for the rest of the movie consistently." Shooting the love scenes with Stewart, widely believed to be Pattinson's girlfriend, brought some pressure because of fans' expectations for the previously celibate on-screen couple. Sighing, he says: "It's more an abstract idea of living up to expectations because you don't know what the expectations are. Especially with the honeymoon stuff, it's just in people's imaginations. "You never really think about the reality of what people's expectations are, you just try and make it good. And if you like it, then hopefully other people will like it." Trying to measure up to co-star Lautner, who has no qualms about appearing shirtless, required some dedication from Pattinson, who reportedly worked out for six months to get a six-pack. When Bella unexpectedly falls pregnant with their half-human and half-vampire baby, whom they name Renesmee, their marriage suffers

"a lot of strain" as Edward feels the baby is a death sentence for Bella, while she considers it a miracle. But when Edward realises there's no changing Bella's mind about the child, he becomes more supportive. To sustain the baby and herself through pregnancy, Bella has to drink blood which she then reacts to and throws up again. Pattinson says he "loved" doing the gruesome birth scene. "It could have been a R-rated sequence - or a real ridiculous comedy sequence," he says, laughing. "We kind of shot it as an adult horror and then edited out the really gruesome bits. If you went on the set, it looked like a Saw movie, not a Twilight movie." He adds: "There's literally been no blood in the films, except for single drops here and there. I walked in and Kristen was covered in fake blood and gore." In between shooting the Twilight films, Pattinson has kept himself busy. He played Salvador Dali in Little Ashes, starred in tearjerker Remember Me and romantic drama Water For Elephants. Yet stepping back into Edward's shoes was easy. "You do feel as soon as you go into makeup, for one thing, it's quite limiting. All of the limitations of the make-up, wardrobe and even the contact lenses, they all play into the character," he says. Prior to Twilight, Pattinson's biggest role was as Hogwarts champion Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, where he played second fiddle to the film's main stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. With the end of the Twilight franchise in sight, Pattinson has upcoming roles in David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis and period piece Bel Ami. "I like working all the time," he says. "I spent so many years before Twilight just working for two to three months and then doing nothing or these tiny jobs for the rest of the year. That's the hardest thing to deal with. You're like, 'Ok, I'll just go get drunk again'."

Over the years, I have dabbled in finding out information on my family history. I have invested in the family tree computer software and bought numerous books on the subject and NEVER miss an episode of the TV show Who do you think you are? I recently interviewed Time Team’s Tony Robinson on my Wave 105 show and it was fascinating. We were looking at some new historical records from here in the south which have just been made available to the public for the first time. This should make tracking down information about your family history a lot easier and will open up more avenues of research for people, who like me, wish to dig the dirt on their past! Disappointingly for me, there have been a few revelations but no major shocks in the ‘Jackson’ family tree from what I have researched so far, we all seem to have been pretty well behaved in yonder year. I have to admit; sometimes I do slightly envy the people you hear about who reveal massive family secrets while investigating their family history, those who have endless tales to dine out on about their ancestors and distant relatives misbehaving. But I guess I should feel I am lucky that I have not discovered anything upsetting, or that my family have been through anything disturbing.

It appears that researching family history is as popular as ever in the UK. Who do you think you are? is now in its eighth series and is still as gripping as episode one. Perhaps one of my favourite shows was with actor Alan Cumming in the last series. The show was upsetting, yet enthralling, as Alan found out that his maternal grandfather had accidentally killed himself playing a game of Russian Roulette. Alan’s family weren’t aware of this before he took part in the TV show - knowing only that he’d died in a “shooting incident”. Watching the episode, I really sensed the shock and upset that Alan must have felt when this was unearthed.

I will continue to trace my family history as I love hitting a brick-wall and trying to find ways around it with clever research tips and techniques. I do sometimes wonder just how far I will be able to dredge back and if I will eventually hit a dead-end or even worse the end of my family line!

TRADE TIPS When decorating a ceiling, that has a water stain on it, always find thecause and remedy it first. It could be a leaky radiator, an overflow, or ablocked trap on your bath or sink. Next, set about protecting everything you don't want paint splashes on. Move large items of furniture to the middle of the room, cocoon them with a plastic dust sheet to stop paint and dust from spoiling your belongings. Use cotton dust-sheets folded twice to protect the flooring/carpet. Take care on these, particularly if placed on wooden or tiled floors as it can be slippery. A suitable sealer like Polycell Stain block or Zinsser Cover Stain should be applied and allowed to dry, these are available in aerosols which speed things up. Use a good quality roller sleeve, roller and roller pole - my choice is Wooster and a 2" paint Brush like a Purdy or Wooster. Carefully brush a margin around the ceiling then roll up to it. Use a cross lap method and section the ceiling into four parts so it's easier to manage. I recommend a baseball cap when rolling ceilings to save getting spattered hair. I use a scuttle which is basically a square roller bucket.

Use Scuttle Liners - These are like bin liners but made for the 15lt Scuttle with draw tape to seal the paint in so there’s no need to decant overnight, allowing you to seal it and stop the paint skinning up.

More recently we have also launched Quay Living running alongside Quay Holidays, offering longer-lettings and sales. When was your business established? Quay Holidays was established in 2006 and the sister-arm Quay Living formally launched in 2010. What drove you to start the business? Demand! I started by letting our own apartment on Poole Quay for holiday lettings. In our first full year we let 364 out of 365 days and the second year 51 out of 52 weeks! Other owners soon approached us to ask if we could also let their properties and the rest is history… How has the recent financial climate affected your business and what, if anything, have you changed as a result? More of our Landlords currently prefer to switch to the secure income of longer six-month lettings over the winter (even though rents can be lower that the lucrative holiday lets). We launched Quay Living to be able to offer a fully comprehensive letting service. What’s next for the business? We’ve recently moved into new premises, a prominent location in Poole’s Lower High Street and also formally launched Quay Living – so we’re settling in and knuckling down to growing the portfolio. However, we constantly strive to improve our services and never stand still 74

What do you look for in potential staff members? Dedication and a passion for the business. Everyone must enjoy what they’re doing and that makes for a great working environment. The comprehensive nature of our management service means that we are always busy, and we need people who thrive in a fast-moving environment. Do you think a degree is important when recruiting? For some positions, it is an advantage. For our lettings team members, on the job training is also important, so we encourage them to go for the ARLA or NAEA – it’s important to fully understand what you’re doing! What has been your best and worst moment in business? The best is absolutely winning business without a doubt – I never cease to get a great buzz from that, whether it’s from sales, longer-lettings or holiday lets. It’s a great feeling to match people with their dream property.The worst has to be letting people down. If a holiday property is withdrawn without notice and we have to cancel people’s holidays it’s awful. We try wherever possible to find suitable alternatives. Thankfully it’s something that rarely happens. What was your first job? As a secretary to the National Federation of Roofing Contractors in London’s West End. I suppose you could say I’ve always been interested in putting a roof over people’s heads. What one piece of advice would you give to someone starting up a new business? Be prepared to work very hard! What do you think makes a good entrepreneur? Dedication and a passion for your industry are givens, but a business plan, regularly reviewed and updated is vital. After all, you wouldn’t set off on a major hike without a map in your rucksack! Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully on the beach with a pina colada! Seriously, I’d like to see the business grow, but

with a great team of leaders so I can balance more time with the children or for my other voluntary work interests. If you could be anywhere in the world today, where would you be and why? Poole is undoubtedly the best place to live in the UK. There is so much to do, and so much natural beauty on our doorstep that I never tire of telling our holiday guests! What is your favourite local haunt? Too many to mention it depends on the occasion. We live in the heart of Poole Old Town so we have plenty of choice… Hotel du Vin, Da Vinci’s, The Thai Restaurant, Fishy Fishy. But then it’s just as much fun to hop on a ferry from The Quay to Brownsea Island for a picnic… What single place would you advise a visitor to go in Dorset? Poole Quay – it’s ever-changing with heaps going on. As a local, it’s easy to forget the sheer amount of events and activities focused on The Quay, but there is so much to see and do that visiting friends are green with envy. I think my children assume that everybody has a weekly fireworks display at the end of their road! Which 5 guests (dead or alive) would you invite to a fantasy dinner party? David Cameron (and his PA – it’s always the PA that gets things done!), Elvis Presley, Peter Kay and a bunch of my closest friends. Describe your home’s style? Georgian – we live in a 300 year old merchant’s house, very different from the contemporary apartments we deal with day-to-day. We feel privileged to have the opportunity to live in such a characterful property, but we’re really just custodians for the future… Final thought... Adoption – it’s been in the press again recently. Something that is very close to our hearts and I totally agree that the whole system needs a massive overhaul. It is disgraceful the time it takes to place children in secure loving homes. Don’t get me started… I could go on for ages…

2011; what a strange year! A year in which the world was plunged into a further debt crisis and the Euro zone wobbled so hard that even a Weeble might have lost its centre of gravity. And who knew that the Greek Government’s poor financial management would rock the global economy so. We saw John Terry become a racist and rugby players get drunk and perform appallingly on and off the pitch. 2011 saw the death of one of the modern song writing greats in Amy Winehouse (sad!) and the death of the band Westlife (Happy). We saw the outpouring of grief for the death of one of the Red Arrows. This depth of emotion surprised many but it was in no small part due to the enormous amount of skill we had witnessed in our very own sky’s moments earlier. And finally we saw the end of two psychotic tyrants that have terrorised millions throughout the world. The joy, security and relief at the demise of Osama Bin Laden and Colonel Gadaffi was tangible and now maybe our troops can come home from these God forsaken war zones and spend some time with their families. Some how I doubt it though: Next Stop Iran anyone? So who knows what 2012 will bring, of course we will have the Olympics where the whole country will suddenly forget striking teachers, decamped gypsies and youth unemployment figures and suddenly realise that this country truly is Great Britain. We will have the jingoism and shattering of false dreams when our football team heads off to Poland and Ukraine and we will have more tax increases and cuts in public spending, of this you can be sure. But what of the housing market I hear you cry? Well this year has seen a very definite plateuing of prices. Although statistics will tell you that they have fallen, I believe that those figures are some what tainted by drastic drops in the areas of previous unnatural growth such as Manchester, Cardiff and Docklands to name a few. Here in Bournemouth I am selling houses for roughly the same price as I was a year ago and that is enough of a barometer for me. Next year will be one of two parts, I believe. The first part will be a little slow as the market try’s to shake off the Euro zone hangover and the very real threat of dropping into recession again. However, I believe that this will be short lived perhaps the minimum requirement for recession, 2 months of negative growth, but no more. I then think that the natural housing market demand that exists due to death, divorce, debt and school catchment areas will kick in and things will start to move again, may be slowly at first but with definite clarity. The relaxing of deposit amounts required by mortgage lenders will oil these cogs and hopefully allow the currently defunct flat market to gain the shot in the arm it so desperately needs. Well these are my opinions and the beauty of supposition is that nobody really knows, for now all I can say with some authority is Christmas and 2012 are definitely coming and may I wish you a very merry first one and a happy and prosperous second one. See you next year!

Although we've been lucky with the mild autumnal climate so far, it's wise to be prepared for the thermometer plunging anytime soon. Cold weather means 30% less moisture in the warm air, explains Sue Mayou, consultant dermatologist and Neutrogena advisor, which can lead to dry, irritated skin. Central heating and wind can also contribute to losing your glowing looks, she adds. "This fluctuation between cold and warm air means skin is constantly losing moisture, resulting in the dreaded dry, flaky skin." But never fear, you can fight Jack Frost by upping your skincare SOS and employing some toasty beauty tactics.

Snuggling up with creature comforts is the obvious reaction when the window panes start frosting up, but sadly this isn't a good seasonal forecast for your skin.

Think about making small adjustments to your skincare regime each day.

"The excess use of central heating and having more hot baths are a contributory factor to chapped skin," says Julie Brackenbury, Nurture skincare's cosmetic nurse. "Both increase moisture loss from the skin, and once compromised it can become sensitive and flaky." Winter diets can also play havoc with skin, as we enjoy more treats and stodge, and less fruit, veg and salad. "Our eating habits change in the winter and, from a psychological perspective, we may not want to drink as much water as it may seem too cold! Instead we tend to go for hot drinks like coffee and tea which are diuretics and can contribute to dehydration," Brackenbury explains. "We also tend to cosy up at home and consequently, some people may drink more alcohol in the winter." 106 2

"It's not about making big changes to your routine," Brackenbury assures. "Slip in a second hydration routine and you will see a big difference to your skin's texture and glow." Be kind to winter-ravaged skin and steer clear of harsh, alcohol-based cleansers that can strip the skin of vital oils. Always pat the skin dry rather than rubbing vigorously and irritating the skin further. For those who suffer with chapped hands and dry skin, take moisturising supplies with you in handy travel-sized tubes or leave a soothing tub on your desk at work. "If you work in an office during the day it's likely the atmosphere will be very drying; I'd buy a second moisturiser to pat on whenever my skin starts feeling tight," Brackenbury advises. You may not be able to see it but harsh winter sun can still contribute to damaged skin. Apply a sunscreen to your face and hands about 30 minutes before venturing out into the cold.

Use your sofa time to pay attention to your hands and feet. While you can wrap your body up from head to toe, it's often your poor hands that suffer most from being exposed to the elements.

Keep your skin glowing despite the extreme elements. Dr Tracy Mountford has this winter skincare advice:

"Skin on this area is the thinnest past of the body and has fewer oil glands meaning it's harder to keep them soft and supple," says Caroline Frazer, Simple skincare expert. Try wearing cotton gloves and a moisturising hand cream to soften them overnight. Don't spend the rest of the winter hiding your toes away in snuggly socks, sheepskin boots and slippers. Pull them off at the end of a long day and pay your tootsies attention. The skin on your feet is thicker than anywhere else on the body so requires extra TLC to prevent them becoming dry and flaky. "Your summer months moisturiser won't cut the mustard when it comes to battling cold snaps. Up the ante and go for richer, creamier formulas that really work hard at nourishing the skin," Frazer recommends. Look for products that contain humectants (a class of substances including glycerine, sorbitol and alpha-hydroxy acids) that attract moisture to the skin. Treat your feet to an occasional foot scrub and follow with a glycerineenriched foot cream designed specifically to soothe your winter soles.

A CHAT WITH THE HEAD IAIN ROBERTSON BUCKHOLME TOWERS Buckholme’s Christmas Charities! At this time we don’t have to look far to find people less fortunate. The Christmas Shoebox Appeal of Rev Mark Phillips at Parkstone United Reform Church, just a few doors away, is something with which we are delighted to be associated. Within a week of asking, Buckholme pupils had packed 50 shoe boxes with gifts galore for children in Africa and Eastern Europe. Year 6 pupils then delivered the boxes to the church for checking and shipping. Children in Need saw our children covered in spots. We raised around £150. The highlight of the day was the visit to Nursery by a real, live Spaceman! His space ship had broken down so he came to rest and chat while it was in the workshop. THE EXCITEMENT WAS OFF THE SCALE! The School Council decided they wanted to help the local Elderly. So the Christmas Tree at Poole Day Centre was given a Buckholme treat and the entrance hall transformed. Our School Choir will be following up next week with a little Carol Service.

NEW AUDI A1 MODELS Getting personal with the Audi A1 has become easier thanks to new Black Edition and Contrast Edition specification options that "take different routes to achieve an even more striking and exclusive look." The new design options can now also be combined with a more powerful 2.0-litre, 143hp TDI engine that complements the existing 1.6-litre, 105hp unit. Contrast Edition specification is available for a premium of £1,350 over the price of an equivalent A1 Sport model, and in conjunction with all engines in the A1 range with the exception of the 1.4 TFSI 185hp. It brings a contrasting colour for the roof line and for aerodynamic body styling elements that are also added over and above the Sport specification, plus larger 17-inch ‘fivearm’ design bi-colour alloy wheels that expand on the Sport model’s 16-inch examples. For a more resolutely sporty look a double-blade roof spoiler, also in a contrasting colour, can be added at extra cost. The Black Edition alternative is based on the top S line specification, and is available exclusively in conjunction with the 185hp 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine and the newly introduced 143hp 2.0-litre TDI. For a premium of £1,100 over the S line models, it adds a black styling treatment for the single frame grille

surround and number plate holder, dark tinted rear privacy glass, 18-inch five-arm rotor design alloy wheels in a titanium finish in place of the S line model’s 17-inch equivalents and Xenon Plus headlights with LED daytime-running lights. Inside, it also brings full electronic climate control as an enhancement to the S line model’s manual air conditioning and the Audi Sound System speaker upgrade giving 180 watts of output. Alongside the additional scope for visual enhancement offered by the two new specification options comes the potential for even greater TDI pace thanks to the fifth and latest introduction to the A1 engine range. The 2.0-litre TDI with common-rail fuel injection is available in conjunction with Sport, S line, Contrast Edition and Black Edition specification levels, and is priced from £17,945. The 0-60 mph time is 8.2 seconds on the way to a top speed of 135mph. Impressive 68.9mpg combined economy complements this strong performance. The A1 TDI range also includes the 1.6 TDI with a VED and congestion charge-eliminating 99g/km CO2 output, and from the petrol-powered camp the similarly turbocharged and directly-injected 1.2-litre TFSI with 86hp and 1.4-litre TFSI 122hp.

Breakdown cover company and road safety organisation GEM Motoring Assist has launched a new campaign to raise awareness of the dangers and penalties motorists can face when using a mobile phone while driving. Despite the law being introduced in 2003, a record number of drivers in the UK have been prosecuted for using their mobile phone over the last few years. With research showing that using a mobile phone while driving can make motorists four times more likely to have a crash and reaction times 50% worse than when driving normally, GEM warns drivers to switch off before setting off. David Williams of GEM Motoring Assist says “The temptation to use your mobile phone while driving can be greatly reduced if you turn it off and keep it out of reach. It is very important to keep a mobile phone with you in the car in case of an emergency situation; however it is illegal and dangerous to use a hand-held mobile and it must only be used when you have stopped in a safe place.“Motorists can expect a minimum of three penalty points on their licence, plus fines of £60 if they are caught, however should the police deem the offence blatant or protracted the driver may be requested to go to court to face a fine as high as £1,000. In addition, should mobile phone use be in any way an aggravating factor in a crash, the driver could be facing a serious charge of careless or dangerous driving.” Extending its campaign to include advice on mobile phone courtesy when around others or in sensitive places, GEM has joined forces with the National Campaign for Courtesy to encourage more politeness through the creation of a courtesy code for mobile phone use.

Research into nearly 900,000 cars operated by the country’s biggest 50 leasing companies has found that the BMW 3 Series range is the most reliable model in the 2010 FN50 survey, and BMW was found to be the most reliable manufacturer.The FN50 reliability survey, undertaken by Fleet News and financial consultants Grant Thornton, asks leasing companies to assess reliability according to the number of breakdowns per model on their fleet. The majority of the vehicles surveyed are used for business and are subjected to higher than average mileage and are constantly used in all conditions. Fleet News editor, Stephen Briers, said: “BMW has built on its position as the most reliable car manufacturer supplying the UK’s largest

contract hire companies with the 3 Series taking first place as the most reliable model, adding yet another attribute to low CO2 emissions, modest overall running costs and rewarding driving behaviour and making its cars more desirable to fleet operators and company car drivers.” Tim Abbott, Managing Director at BMW UK, said: “We are delighted to have won the overall honour in the FN50 reliability survey. VEGETABLE FUSILLI WITH BASIL AND LEMON (SERVES 2) INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 large bunch of basil

Cook the pasta as per packet instructions. Add the green beans for the last few minutes of cooking. Place the basil and salt into a pestle and mortar and grind to a paste. Fry the courgette in olive oil for four minutes, add the garlic towards the end, with a little of the pasta cooking water.

1tsp salt 50ml olive oil 200g fusilli Handful of green beans 1/2tsp ground cumin 1 large courgette, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 25g butter 25g grated parmesan Black pepper 1 lemon, peeled and finely sliced Juice of another lemon

PENNE CARBONARA (SERVES 2) INGREDIENTS

100g pancetta, thinly sliced

Cook the penne in boiling, salted water as per the pack instructions. Dry fry the pancetta until crispy. Set to one side and repeat with the coppa or Parma ham.

100g coppa (Italian sausage) or Parma ham 200g penne 4 egg yolks 150ml double cream 100g freshly grated parmesan 10g parsley, chopped Black pepper

Whisk the egg yolks, cream, most of the parmesan (keep some for serving) and parsley together, season with pepper then crumble in most of the pancetta and ham (keep some for serving). Drain the pasta, add to the sauce and mix well to coat all of the pasta. Add a good grinding of black pepper, sprinkle over the remaining parmesan and top with the remaining pancetta and ham.

Drain the pasta and beans, reserving the cooking liquid, and add to the courgettes along with a little more of the cooking water. Add the basil paste along with a good knob of butter and stir to combine. Add the parmesan and lemon juice, season with salt and pepper and toss to combine. Serve topped with the lemon slices, basil leaves and a drizzle of oil.


BREAM WITH TOMATOES, CAPERS AND OLIVES (SERVES 4) INGREDIENTS 1kg sea bream, gutted and scaled 50ml olive oil, plus extra for serving 3 cloves garlic, sliced 400g baby plum tomatoes, left whole 3 red chillies, chopped 100ml water Small bunch marjoram 50g black olives 10g salted capers 1 red onion, peeled and finely sliced Small bunch of basil

METHOD Heat the olive oil in a large pan. Fry the garlic, chillies and tomatoes for a couple of minutes and then add the water and a few sprigs of fresh marjoram. Place the lid on and leave to cook for five minutes. Score the fish on both sides and stuff the cavity with the remaining marjoram. Place the fish on top of the tomatoes, put the lid back on and leave to cook for 10 minutes. Finish with the salted capers, olives, basil and the sliced red onion. Drizzle with oil and serve.
