Happy new year and welcome to 2012! 2011 was an interesting year in many ways, we went from Royal wedding to riots in the space of a few months and as is now usual, the property market was certainly anything but boring. We start the new year with lots of healthy tips for those of us (all of us!) that over indulged over the Christmas period from local fitness guru Spencer Cuckney on page 116. We've also got DIY tips, lease extension advise, and interview with Daniel Craig, the chance to win Omid Djali tickets and possibly, surely, the safest house in the world. GARDEN BUILDINGS the options are endless!
Award-winning garden designer Janine Pattison takes a look at how your garden can have plenty of colour early next year if you bury some treasure now. The days are getting shorter and colder and once the autumn colour has faded from our gardens it seems a very long time to wait until next summer’s display starts again. But don’t despair because now is the time to be burying some treasure which will pay huge dividends next year.The treasure I am talking about are spring-flowering bulbs. Bulbs are some of the easiest and most rewarding garden plants you can grow and now is the time to get them into the ground to guarantee a fantastic display next Spring. All Garden Centres and nurseries have them in stock now and there is an amazing range of varieties and colours to choose from. The main types we use in gardens we create for clients are daffodils, tulips, snowdrops, bluebells and alliums.The first four types will be familiar to most people but alliums may need some introduction. They are from the onion family and produce tall, slender stems with a perfect round flower head on the end, usually in shades of purple. They tend to flower slightly later than tulips and are the perfect ‘follow-on’ plant to extend interest in a border.There are bulbs for all places in your garden. Although most prefer a sunny position and well-drained soil - tulips and alliums are notable examples of such plants 2
others, such as bluebells and snowdrops, will enjoy a shadier home. They also vary widely in height. The short ones, such as crocuses, are best near the front of a border or in a rock garden, while taller growing bulbs like lilies are probably better in the middle or back of the border. However, these rules can all be broken. Experiment in your own garden and don’t be afraid to dig the bulbs up after flowering and move them if necessary. There aren’t many problems to watch out for when growing bulbs, apart from checking that the bulbs are healthy to start with (don’t plant any that are soft or show signs of rot). Some protection from slugs and snails may be needed when they start into growth in the spring. Planting bulbs makes it easy to create lovely displays in your borders and containers and as they are some of the earliest flowering plants in the garden are a great way of brightening up the short days of spring. Bulbs are not expensive and are available in a wide range of colours and forms - from the dark purple frills of Tulip ‘Black Parrot’ to the elegant tall purple Allium ‘Ambassador’. Why not make a trip to your local garden center and pick up some bulbs now and get them planted before the weather turns really wintery. You won’t regret it! so much that it resulted in Dad being recognised as the Volunteer of the Year by the Mayor of Bournemouth in May 1996 and he was awarded an MBE in the 2000 New Years Honours list by the Queen. This was at the same time he made Bournecoast, the family business, such a local success ready to pass on to us, his three children. We are so thankful for all the hard work he put in during his 26 years of running the company and the legacy he has left us. He added, “Having now retired, Dad is sorely missed by us all at the company and the staff comment about the void he has left behind. It is his smile and sense of humour that makes him such a genuine and loved person by anyone he meets. Custom Made Furniture A Customers Experience We were first introduced to Custom Made ironically as a result of our 1979 VW Camper which was restored in 2008 and which needed built in furniture. Neill was recommended to us, as he used to produce camper furniture. We delivered ‘Bluebell’ for her measure up and as this was our first visit to the Poole showroom we wandered around looking at the various displays. We were immediately impressed with the quality and finish of what we saw and the modern contemporary feel. Later in 2008 we moved house and following a major rebuild we invited a number of companies to tender for wardrobes in two bedrooms, a bespoke study and units in the playroom to provide storage for the kids toys, the Plasma TV, home cinema and drawers etc for DVD storage. It was important to us that we had a fitted solution for the playroom in order to make sure we had some sort of cable management built in. We involved Neill part way through the house build process when it was still very much a building site as we did with the other companies, but found that either other companies modular furniture could not be adapted to give us what we wanted or that certain companies tried to tell us what we wanted because ‘that’s what they were doing for everyone’. Neill was easy to work with, he listened and took our ideas on board and came up with good ideas of his own. We looked to push the boundaries and come up with something a little bit different to the everyday run of the mill and more importantly he never told us what we wanted! As an additional requirement we also have a disabled child and Neill came up with some good ideas for soft opening and closing in order to allow her easy access to the cupboards and drawers. The furniture was produced at the workshop next to the Poole showroom and in order to make sure that we were fully satisfied with everything we went to see the more complex displays ‘in situ’ which was extremely helpful as we were able to make last minute ‘tweaks’ in order to prevent any issues during the onsite installation. Again changes were done without fuss and nothing was too much trouble there also wasn’t the awkward ‘we can do that change but unfortunately it will cost you extra’ conversation. The fitting which took place was a week long process and met all our expectations. Their fitter is very professional and makes sure that all aspects of the installation are done without compromise. The end panels on the wardrobes fit snug to the walls and were cut around the cornice in each of the rooms to the point where you cannot tell whether the cornice was fitted before or after the wardrobes and no silicone was used in any part of the process to finish off
any gaps because there weren’t any! Almost two years on we decided to have the two remaining bedrooms fitted with wardrobes and additional units fitted in the lounge. We didn’t even consider going anywhere else and called Neill. He again worked with us to deliver the same level of quality we have come to expect. We are delighted with all the furniture as you can see and can’t recommend Neill and his team at Custom Made Furniture highly enough. Architects claim to have designed and built the world's safest house - a luxury home that at the touch of a button becomes an impregnable cubeshaped fortress. The remarkable building is the work of leading Polish architects KWK Promes and is attracting attention all round the globe. Appropriately called "The Safe House", it features a series of moving walls and shutters that close to cover every door and window in the building. At the touch of a few buttons the house turns into an impregnable concrete cube. Once in lockdown it is only approachable by a drawbridge, which itself can be raised. The house, just outside Warsaw, was built at an undisclosed cost for a private individual. As well as top notch security it also boasts 5* luxury boasting its own swimming pool. One of the huge 40ft by 25 foot protective shutters, which lowers to the cover the front of the house, can even be converted into a movie screen. When in 'open' mode, the concrete slabs and metal shutter either swing or slide out to reveal windows and doorways. Writing on its website about the property, KWK Promes said: "The most essential item for our clients was acquiring the feeling of maximum security in their future home."

Some boilers have holiday modes that do this for you. – Alternatively, empty your home’s water system, which is a good idea if you’re going away for a long period. Shut off the water supply at the stopcock and drain the pipes by turning on the cold taps until the water stops running (if there’s no water in them, it can’t freeze). You should also flush the toilet several times to empty the coldwater storage tank. – Locate and label your home’s main stopcock. This will be on the incoming water supply (rising main) and is often under the kitchen sink. – The stopcock can corrode over time, so check it’s working properly by turning it from fully open to fully closed and back again a couple of times. Leave it half a turn from fully open (unless you’re shutting off the water). – Make sure all your home’s pipes and waterstorage tanks are insulated, especially if they’re in the loft (which should be insulated anyway). This will help to stop them from freezing, as well as saving energy. If you can bear the draught, open the loft hatch to warm up the loft in cold weather.

— Collections are cool again as we crave personality in our homes. We unveil some wonderful ways to transform walls by displaying those treasured possessions, from books and paintings to memorabilia.
When it comes to personalising our homes, we can quite literally hit a brick wall. So what a relief to find the equivalent of a 'wall therapist' filled with wisdom and inspirational ideas. "A lot of people are daunted by that blank canvas before them, but by following a few guidelines, taking time and and having a little patience, you can create wonderful walls," says Geraldine James soothingly. The home buyer for Selfridges has so often been asked for her advice on what to hang where that she's produced her own guide, Creative Walls, which is packed with tips and illustrations of her favourite walls. It's been a labour of love for the inveterate collector of quirky items and art, who enthuses: "It may seem strange to get so excited about walls, but I do. "For me, a wall is a great big opportunity. I can't wait to get 'painting'. And my 'paints' are virtually anything I can find, hang, or lean against that wall. "It could be photographs, art, ceramics, carvings, obscure curios discovered in bottom drawers, gorgeous objects unearthed in unlikely flea markets." James reveals how walls can be havens of self-expression with brilliant examples of elegantly decorated structures, through to a host of whacky walls hung with animal skulls and antlers, framed collections of theatre tickets, or papered with photos or magazine cuttings in a mural style. "Amazing effects can be achieved without spending vast amounts of money or employing a team of interior designers," she says. The expense of redecoration or renovation may not always be necessary, she says, which is cheering for those of us on a budget. Instead, she advises taking another perspective on faded wallpaper or layers of chipped paint and viewing them instead as charming effects revealing glimpses into centuries of decoration. "Even fresh plaster - drying at different speeds to leave a rich patina of pinks - has a warm, lustrous appeal that a flat, white, painted wall can never match. Cold minimalism has its place - but not at my place!" says James. "I don't believe in arbiters of taste," she adds firmly. "Of course, in everyday life we're surrounded by people telling us how to dress or style our homes, but if we all follow the advice of so-called experts, the world will be a very dull place. "What's key is creating walls that reflect you and your personality." Follow James's suggestions and wake up to the wonder of walls...

"It's always tempting to go for the safe, predictable option when decorating our homes, even though it's so easy to create fascinating displays with the simplest of objects, provided you put them together in a clever way," James says. "Instead, trust your instincts, be open minded and look for objects that really appeal to you. You have to be confident enough to say, 'This is what I believe in, this is what I like, this is
my soul exposed'." When buying items for a home, try to visualise what they'll look like in the intended location, and check their scale will suit the space. Take measurements with you if you can, so you can check before buying. Work the wall: Experiment with simple but unusual shaped objects; driftwood, artefacts found on holiday or simply everyday objects displayed in an unusual way. You could even paint a verse or saying on a wall. Display of passion "If you have a passion, indulge it," James continues. "Show off what you like whether it's taxidermy, china plates or vintage iron shop signs. "They'll bring a wall alive, give a home personality and be a talking point." And remember collections can be changed, which will keep rooms looking fresh. Work the wall: Try to theme a collection in colour or shape to give it cohesion. Jewellery can be easily accessible and also an eye-catching display if you line an old frame with felt and pin your pieces to it. Or make your own work of art by creating a collage of theatre or concert tickets and framing it. If you want to give items a special focus, consider placing each in a seethrough acrylic box to make a display 'pyramid'.

"But imagine them converted to black and white, cropped and enlarged," she suggests. "It doesn't matter if the image becomes grainy, as that adds to the beauty. "Have some framed professionally or put them in old frames from a charity shop - it's the mix that makes it special." Work the wall: When hanging a group of pictures, first lay them on the floor and move them around to get the right combination (photograph them to remember their order). If you have a small room and want to make it look bigger, hang pictures opposite a picture to create a magical illusion. "It can look smart or casual, depending on how you place your pieces, but it generally appears less formal than hanging art." Adopt a common theme, she advises. For example, black and white or all wood for the frames, which will help create a unified look and also allows the display to be easily interchangeable. "You can create really lovely overlapping effects, where certain parts of the picture are obscured," she says. "Play with groupings of landscapes and portraits. In fact, play is the word to use when working with this style of art display." Work the wall: Large framed map prints by Bold & Noble, £150 each, from John Lewis, would lend themselves to being displayed leant against a wall or grouped on a floating shelf. Build up a collection of original art by visiting art fairs held throughout the country and looking out for exhibitions at local arts colleges. It has started well, as January is a good month to eat potatoes, parsnips, cauliflower, carrots and swedes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; so I have been making some lovely hearty meals to keep warm and snug during this dreary month. February is when UK grown cabbages and leeks hit the shelves, followed by lovely spring greens and succulent lamb in March. I am really looking forward to cooking new recipes which make use of seasonal favourites. I seem to have something planned for each month in the year ahead. May is looking like my favourite month though, as Rhubarb is at its best, you just canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t beat a big helping of Rhubarb crumble after a Sunday roast dinner!

LEASE EXTENSIONS Flat owners should prepare to dig deep
A good New Year’s resolution for flat owners is to check out the length of their leasehold ownership, because the passing of another year means the value of their property could fall if they ignore it. According to The Association of Leasehold Enfranchisement Practitioners (ALEP), some flat owners can save thousands of pounds just by taking a close look at their lease. Many leases are dated at the end of the quarter, with June and December seemingly the most popular dates. When your lease has less than 85 years to run, every year that the lease reduces, the cost of extending your lease or buying the freehold rises. When it gets below 80 years, the cost rises at an accelerating rate. Alex Greenslade, ALEP honorary secretary, says: “Depending on the value of your property, the cost of extending the lease or buying the freehold can rise by hundreds or even thousands of pounds a year. “Occasionally we learn that some leaseholders have allowed their leasehold to run down so much, they no longer own the property they thought was theirs. “Yet it is so simple to preserve the value of your investment, if you act in time and the end of the year is a good wake-up call. “Finalising the cost of a lease extension or freehold is best negotiated by valuers and solicitors who specialise in this area. “The negotiation depends on a number of factors, including property value, ground rent due for the remainder of the lease and length of the lease.” As an example to show how much it could cost to delay extending a lease or buying the freehold, consider a flat currently worth £200,000 (with a £100 ground rent per annum). The approximate cost of extending the lease by adding 90 years and reducing ground rent to zero is as follows: at 85 years, £7,000; at 75 years, £9,000; at 70 years, £12,000; and at 65 years, £17,000. Owners should also remember that the process of extending a lease can take many months, particularly if freeholders takes a tough stance in negotiations. In some cases, a sale can be delayed by a lease extension, since the buyer, their solicitor or mortgage lender may insist on a lease extension being in place before completion funds can be transferred. If the lease length cannot be resolved quickly, buyers might just walk away. Owners must realise that it pays to be proactive, not reactive. However, homeowners who rent out their entire property to holidaymakers earned an average of £73 per night - £140 a night at the height of summer - during 2010.

Happy New Year to all you lovely House readers! I know the festive season probably feels like distant history but, as this is my first opportunity in 2012 to wish you a healthy, happy year ahead, we’ll stretch it out just that little bit longer. Last year was a big one in many ways; a revolution in Egypt, major earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand, a Royal Wedding, Bin Laden and Gaddafi were killed, rioting in England, we lost Steve Jobs to cancer, and Amy Winehouse became the latest member of the ‘27 club’. This column has enabled me to share some of the great things to have happened here in our own home patch in 2011 – all signs of a region full of energy and ambition. Long may it continue into 2012 and a big thank you goes to House for the opportunity to spread the word. We’ll all be full of fresh intentions, as we are every January, to be fitter, healthier, more focused, blah blah blah, but it is a good time to regroup and think clearly about what we want from this year. I’m a great believer in setting your sights on something and aiming towards it. Personally, I am aiming to be more disciplined in 2012. I’d like to be firmly fixed on ticking off boxes and finding the time and will power to get the niggling jobs done before they become a stress. Small examples include: sourcing a new piano teacher, getting pictures on the Liz Lean PR office walls, and, yes I know it’s been said here many times before, but I really need to get fit! That’s the big one for me. You never know, 2012 could be my transformational year? One Bournemouth hotel is trying to help. The Green House Hotel has set its own new year’s resolution to host more ‘green’ events and as a result, a series is to be held on the first Thursday of every month. The first one is right up my street (especially as it includes a glass of wine) with a talk from a chap called Jango who has been in the fitness industry for five years and is tipped as the ‘south coast’s rising fat loss expert’. The title for his talk is ‘how to become unstoppable at achieving a great body’. The fact that he claims he can help put an end to chocolate cravings for good is enough to get me there - I could be his biggest challenge yet, in fact I think he’d need to be a wizard or a witch doctor! But I’m keen to check it out, and yes I’ll remind myself I have to be self-disciplined. Whilst I recognise that being more physically active beyond my once a month personal training session (yes, I’m that rubbish) is the only way forward - and I’m hoping that walking an energetic new puppy will help - I do love to drive. From owning a car as a student that was such a horror story I named it ‘Christine’ after the film, driving a reliable car nowadays continues to feel a daily privilege. I currently drive a blue VW Beetle convertible, which is great fun and I hear a new model is being released this Spring which should give the range a refresh. Working with Breeze Volkswagen we get to see all their new ‘toys’ as they’re launched and they’re most excited about the brand new addition to the range coming out in March, simply called ‘Up!’ My ‘blatant plug of the month’ goes to Up! which is VW’s smallest vehicle to date. Top Gear recently awarded it their ‘Small Car of the Year’ before it has even launched. The show claims the car “is the cleverest small car around today” so we’re hoping it bodes well for Breeze this Spring. The Volkswagen PR department has had some fun with it too – proving it is surprisingly spacious, they managed to squeeze 15 girls and one man from their own team into the interior spaces of the Up! With the boot lid, windows and doors all shut, two people sat in the boot, one on the dashboard, seven on the rear seat, and two in the footwells. It doesn’t sound comfortable but it’s all in the line of duty in this business and well done to their team for being game. I know they say January brings the blues, but we’re all looking forward to a fantastic year ahead – let’s think ‘Up!’ ‘Til next time….. Liz

NEW CAR BRAND FOR UK The Chinese manufacturer Geely is about to enter the UK’s new car market and the first models will arrive at the end of 2012. Geely International Corporation has reached agreement with the UK’s Manganese Bronze Holdings to become their distributor for the United Kingdom for the sale of new Geely cars, the supply of parts, to establish a dealer network and to provide an after-sales service. The UK distributor operation will be known as Geely Auto UK. MBH and Geely are already partners in building the iconic London black cabs with production for the UK market taking place in Coventry by The London Taxi Company, a division of MBH, and for world markets vehicles are produced in China by Geely. John Russell, Chief Executive Officer of MBH said, “We are all aware of the success that the Korean brands, Kia and Hyundai have had in the UK and we can work with Geely to achieve similar success in the future”. Matthew Cheyne, Market Development Director
of Geely Auto UK, is heading up the team responsible for the sales, marketing, dealer development and distribution of Geely vehicles in the UK. He said, “We are starting with a clean sheet of paper with the distribution of Geely passenger cars into the UK, the first major Western European country to receive them. We will start by importing the Geely Emgrand EC7, C/D segment sized four door saloons and five door hatchbacks, initially with 1.5 and 1.8 litre petrol engine options. "But Geely has a comprehensive range of models well suited to European requirements. We will be aiming to widen our range just as quickly as possible, probably at least a new model range every year for the next four to five years. “Geely cars are already suitable for Europe. They are all well equipped products but at affordable prices and will carry a five-year, 100,000 mile warranty”. Cheyne added “The first Emgrand EC7 models to arrive are likely to have a range starting price of approximately £10,000."

Latest figures just released by the Society Of Motor Manufacturers And Traders show Mercedes-Benz Cars has registered 76,570 new cars, up 10 per cent on 2010’s results. In an overall UK car market that fell some 4.5 per cent, Mercedes-Benz also recorded its bestever November, with 6033 cars registered, up 10.7 per cent on the same month last year. This gave Mercedes-Benz Cars a market share of 4.5 per cent – another best-ever performance. Six model ranges have recorded significant double-digit growth in 2011, with C-Class Estate, the SLK-Class Roadster, E-Class Cabriolet, CLSClass four-door Coupé, GL-Class luxury offroader and the R-Class luxury family vehicle all
reporting at least 40 per cent improvements this year compared with the first 11 months of 2010. The new generation C-Class Saloon is 12 per cent up on 2010, with 18,797 registrations, and the C-Class Estate improved 61.8 per cent to 6832 new cars. Fleet and business buyers have increased this year too, with the figure showing that 32,198 new cars have been registered in that sector, an increase of 39.2 per cent.
Nissan’s Micra has been a stalwart of the supermini sector for many years, popular with driving schools, and private buyers young and old. Well built, reliable and with bdecent equipment levels, the Micra ticks many boxes. In recent years the visual styling has been developed to give the Micra a cooler street image, and it has been very successful – and my recent test model, the Micra Tekna proves the point, writes Nick Fletcher. Standard features include an integrated entertainment and information package which includes touch-screen sat-nav, Bluetooth for mobile phone and audio-streaming, AUX-in and USB slots. That gives this Micra plenty of younger-buyer appeal and gibes it an edge of some of its rivals. And there is even more standard kit – alloys, super-charger, parking slot-measurer (yes!), plus rear parking sensors, cruise control, climate control, auto headlamps and wipers, drive computer, glass sunroof, remote locking, power front winmdows and door mirrors, adjustable steering and more. It’s a great package for the money when you analyse just what is on offer. This Tekna 1.2 petrol DIG-S costs £13,650 and also includes engine stop-start and lower-friction engineering to reduce emissions. So you get a combined fuel figure of 65.7 mpg, top speed of 112 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 11.3 seconds, respectable given the impressive economy. Micra styling is love-it-or-hate-it – to some its squat stance and high-up headlamps add charisma while others feel it appears a tad old fashioned. Personally, I like its looks, and I certainly like the way it drives. The 1.2 litre engine is perkly and quiet, the manual gearbox very precise, the steering well-weighted for excellent road feel, and the ride quality is very good. It’s hard to sensibly criticise in overall driving terms. The cabin is well-thought-out, with all but the door-mirror adjuster switch easily reached. To find the mirror switch, you need a torch – its so hidden under the steering wheel and facia it is invisible from the drivers seat. Seating is comfortable, with good support, the rear occupants get adequate space and the tailgate opens to reveal decent room for the family shopping. Overall, the Micra has a nimble driving feel, handles with agility and is about as userfriendly as you can get in its class.

Review Christmas Party 2011 ‘twas the season, and one of the South’s leading PR agencies, Darren Northeast PR, showed us all how to REALLY get around Bournemouth to create a Christmas Super-Party! They have kindly shared their experiences from their 16th December bash. Kicking off proceedings at one of their regional offices in Dean Park, the team cracked open the first of several bottles of bubbly before hopping in a cab to their pre-dinner cocktails at the stylish 1812 Bar on Exeter Road. Their award winning bartenders poured a cascade of martinis, a festively-named Gingerbread Man, and this reviewer’s favourite – the Space Gin Smash. Feeling very merry, the DNPR team made their way to the Highcliff Marriott on Bournemouth’s West Cliff to get their official Christmas Party underway. The scene was truly festive with bright baubles and elegant trees gracing the hotel. Upon arrival, the team were served aperitifs and made their way through to the hotel’s Dorchester and Bryanston Suite which were both seasonally adorned and created the perfect setting for a Christmas Dinner. efore Bond makes his return next year, Daniel Craig stars as a journalist in the dark thriller The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which is released in cinemas on Monday, December 26. The actor talks about working with the uncompromising taskmaster David Fincher, finding the need to fatten up for the role a chore and returning as 007.
Behind the scenes Daniel Craig decided early on not to use a pronounced Swedish accent as he and David Fincher thought it would prove distracting. As part of intensive auditions, Rooney Mara was asked to do everything from recite Swedish poetry to pose with motorcycles. Mara cut her long hair, got a nipple piercing and bleached her eyebrows as part of her physical transformation. To keep the intensity pronounced, Mara and Yorick van Wageningen, who plays her sociopath legal guardian, agreed to have no contact outside of their scenes. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is released in cinemas on Monday, December 26
Daniel Craig has a reputation for being rather serious, a little sour even, but not today. Today, the craggily handsome actor who brought new life to the James Bond franchise in 2006's Casino Royale, is looking relaxed and smiling widely. But then, 2011 has been a good year for the 43-year-old. He married the actress Rachel Weisz, lived out a childhood dream of donning spurs for the sci-fi western Cowboys And Aliens alongside Harrison Ford, and could finally confirm the news that millions were waiting to hear - that he's returning as 007 in the 23rd Bond movie Skyfall. And this month sees him star in the hugely anticipated English-speaking adaptation of The Girl With Dragon Tattoo, a dark and violent thriller dubbed 'the feel-bad movie of Christmas'. It's the first of the series, which includes The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest, written by Stieg Larsson, a former journalistturned-author who died before he could see his work become a worldwide success. So far, 65 million copies have been sold across the globe. "Someone gave me a copy of the book on holiday and I read it in two days," says Craig, who plays Mikael Blomkvist, the Swedish journalist hired by retired tycoon Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) to investigate the decades old disappearance of his niece Harriet. "It's one of those books you just don't put down. There's this immediate feeling that bad things are going to happen." From the start, Craig had an affinity for Blomkvist. "I like his attitude. He's fighting the good fight, trying to uncover corruption and to be an influential journalist." He pauses before adding: "If that's still possible." While Blomkvist travels to a remote island on the frozen Swedish coast, an unusual and ingenious investigator called Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) is hired to do a background check on him, a job that ultimately leads to her joining Blomkvist in his investigation. A punk prodigy whose appearance warns people to stay away, Salander is a heroine unlike any other and Craig was instinctively drawn to her character. "What's interesting about her is that even though she's a victim of sexual violence, she never psychologically becomes a victim," he observes. "Her strength and the way she can take a knock, get up and carry on is something I think people really hook into." The film's directed by David Fincher, of The Social Network fame, a man whose reputation precedes him. "David's very specific and... what's the nicest way to say
it? Particular," the actor laughs. "But once you see the way he builds a scene brick by brick, it's an easy process to relax into. You give yourself over to it, knowing he's got his eye on all the important details." Compared to Mara, who endured months of recalls, Craig was Fincher's favourite from the start. There was one problem though. The actor was in the best shape of his life when he was cast, which wasn't suitable for a journalist who spends much of his time sitting at a desk. "David told me to get fatter. It was a struggle, but I managed," he says with a laugh. "I'm obsessive about getting fit. It's ridiculous, I'm over 40 now," he adds, before recalling Dame Judi Dench proffering two pints of Guinness and a pork pie once filming on Casino Royale had wrapped up and he could afford to relax a little. Given he's currently shooting Skyfall, he's back in tip-top condition. "I'm lucky enough to be given the chance to do a third Bond and it's my intention to make the best Bond movie; Bond with a capital B," says Craig. For a while, it was looking unlikely he'd get the chance to play 007 again following 2008's Quantum Of Solace. The franchise had been put on hold amid financial troubles, with the film company MGM filing for bankruptcy protection last November. Thankfully, a rescue deal and restructuring plan has meant Bond survives another day. "Strangely, it wasn't frustrating because there was nothing I could do," Craig explains. "It was a financial issue and I just had to let [the producers] get on with it. "I was fortunate enough to go off and do some other projects, so I kept myself busy." Born in Cheshire and raised in Liverpool, the actor was only six when he started appearing in school plays. By the age of 16 he'd moved to London as part of the National Youth Theatre before continuing his training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He made his film debut in 1992's The Power Of One, the same year he married Scottish actress Fiona Loudon. Their marriage only lasted two years but they have a daughter, Ella, now 19. It was 2004's gangster movie Layer Cake that really got him noticed after years of supporting roles, and in October 2005, he was announced as the successor to Pierce Brosnan's Bond. Die-hard fans were unable to envision a blonde-haired, blue-eyed 007 and Craig himself initially walked away from the offer. "I couldn't see myself doing it at first," he admits. "I genuinely thought they were having a giggle." But he soon settled into the role and proved the naysayers wrong by bringing a dramatic depth to the character. "There's always going to be somebody who says, 'That's not Bond, this is Bond', but I've made him my own and feel very comfortable and secure about that." A notoriously private man, he admits he had to think long and hard about the effect the role would have on his personal life. "When it came down to it, I decided to embrace the whole thing. There's no point doing a Bond movie and hiding away for six months," he says, before stressing: "Although I've tried to keep my family and friends far away from it. Their privacy is crucially important." It's why he's grateful he managed to keep his marriage to Weisz under wraps in the summer. "It's not about being afraid to be public with your emotions, or about who you are and what you stand for. But if you sell it, you can't buy your privacy back." You wonder then if he enjoyed depicting the 'enemy' in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. "The truth of it is that journalism is an incredibly important part of a democratic society. Some of my heroes are journalists," says Craig. "Obviously journalism sometimes has a negative effect on my world, but I'm big enough and ugly enough to understand why it's there."

A CHAT WITH THE HEAD IAIN ROBERTSON BUCKHOLME TOWERS Make a Wish Foudation at Buckholme Towers ‘Top Sh’elf!’ Elf Day is a new addition to the calendar this year, when everyone dresses up as Elves (and I mean everyone!). After a fancy dress parade, the staff dance like elves (?!) and we raise lots of money for the Make a Wish Foundation. It was good h’elfy fun (check out the pics) and certainly something we will be doing again – in the words of one of our Year 7 pupils, ‘It was a top sh’elf event’! The SENIOR SCHOOL had a tough act to follow when they performed in St Peter’s Church on the last day of term; the Junior School had set the bar very high, the week before, which took the ‘Ahhh’ factor to new heights. SUCH CONFIDENCE! They didn’t disappoint. The quality of performance, particularly the singing, was superb. Singing or speaking solo in a church that size can be very daunting, particularly if you are only 7 years old. Not for Buckholme pupils though! There were duets, quartets, string ensembles, guitar groups and solos from Tom Joucan in Year 7 (our resident Olly Murs!) and Leah Slinger in Year 5, who lead the whole congregation in Once in Royal David’s City. The confidence on display was awesome, from children so young. A BUMPER YEAR! Remarkably, each of the 3 end of term events involved a collection for the Make a Wish Foundation and raised a total of over £600! A superb effort and a sum that will really make a difference! HEALTH+ FITNESS This may not sit well with you, but it’s something that you need to know, and so I’m just going to come out and say it. See, the way I see it they’re insulting your intelligence. Who are “they”? THEY are the talking heads you see on TV and hear on the radio. And I’m convinced they’re trying to make you fatter. Every year at about this time all you see, hear and read about are people making the big three New Year resolutions – make more money, quit smoking, and lose weight. Now, I don’t know the success rate of the first two, but as a fitness expert and someone who has helped hundreds and hundreds of folks lose weight and get in better shape, I can tell you (and statistics prove) that most people who resolve to lose weight in the New Year are doomed. In fact, an article I just read on CNN.com said that most people who have a New Year's resolution to lose weight will fail. In the same article, clinical psychologist Mark Crawford of Roswell, Georgia said that one reason people fail is because they sabotage themselves. I believe this to be true. I’ve seen it myself. You’ll start off in mid-to-late December telling yourself that you will commit to losing weight starting the New Year. Over the weeks building up to the New Year you formulate a plan of sorts… to eat less, make better choices, exercise more, and pick up better habits. That’s the EXACT roadmap to failure! And that’s why I’m writing to you today – to warn you of this impending doom IF YOU’RE ABOUT TO MAKE THIS “NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION” MISTAKE. Here’s what I mean. The reason most people fail at losing weight in the New Year is because… Their goals are probably unrealistic and so they’re already setting themselves up for failure. They're unprepared. Sure, they have a general idea that they want to lose weight, but they most likely do not have a game plan. Their goals are unclear. They lack support. The going WILL GET TOUGH and your support system is what will see you through to your goal. Imagine going to another country you’ve never been in before. Now imagine if I handed you a GPS but didn’t give you an address (a goal). You’d probably fail at getting to your destination, wouldn’t you? Now imagine if I said your destination was a house about 150 miles north. Well, you now have a general idea, but you’ll still never get to your destination and therefore fail. Get the picture? Now imagine if I handed
you a GPS AND gave you the address of the house you needed to end up at. Once you type your goal destination into the GPS, it will give you VERY specific turn by turn directions AND a very realistic timeline in which you’ll arrive. Duh! Makes sense, right? Yet, nearly 96% of all people who set weight loss goals for the New Year don’t know how much they want to lose. And if they can pin point a number they want to lose – they still don’t have a “turn by turn” game plan to get there. Now the reason I’m on this soapbox and having this rant is because I’m sick and tired of good people being misled and being told half‐ truths. Frankly, I hate the idea of a “New Year’s resolution”. That’s just way too much pressure on anyone. PLUS, the way I see it, you can do anything you want, anytime you want. You don’t need to wait till the New Year. If you’re the type of person that I think you are, I’m willing to bet that you can do anything you put your mind to and you can do it whenever you want. Now, if when you want is now, then start now. And if when you want is in the New Year, fine with me, start then. But do it because you made the decision to do it and not because the talking heads on TV and radio influenced you to do it. And now that you know how NOT TO FAIL, you can achieve whatever goal it is that you want to achieve. I believe in you!
