FLYING HIGH FOR SPEEDWAY AND JULIA’S HOUSE MERIDIAN Lifts made a flying start to the inaugural Poole Pirates-Julia’s House Business Fundraising Challenge by raising £895 from a special prize draw. Husband and wife duo Andrew and Joanne Tomlin, the company’s owners, are one of 10 Poole Speedway sponsors supporting Julia’s House through the challenge. The 10 companies have been tasked with raising as much money as possible for the Dorset children’s hospice after each being given £50 start-up funds by Pirates owner Matt Ford. Through their contacts with the world championship organisers, Meridian Lifts secured a pair of VIP tickets to the British Grand Prix and arranged a prize draw. And the winner, who was drawn by Pirates star Maciej Janowski at the meeting against Birmingham, was Ernie Battey, a director of fellow club sponsors MedicareSystems.TheMeridian Lifts team are planning two further fundraisers for Julia’s House before the end of the Elite League season. Ian Wadley, community fundraiser at Julia’s House, said: “It is great to be working alongside Meridian Lifts and all of the Poole Pirates sponsors and supporters. “We have already heard about some fantastic fundraising ideas, so I am sure the businesses involved will raise a brilliant amount to support the vital work of Julia’s House.”

YOUNG SUPPORTERS SET TO WIN WITH BROOMHILL GARDEN BUILDINGS AFC Bournemouth’s young supporters will get the opportunity to win a host of exciting prizes again this season, after Broomhill Garden Buildings renewed their sponsorship of the popular family stand at the Goldsands Stadium. Last season one lucky Cherries supporter won a children’s playhouse, which is set to be built by Cherries legend Steve Fletcher, and as Broomhill now enter the second year of their partnership, they have promised further prizes as they look to connect with the club’s ever growing young fanbase. the holes in the wall for the ventilation! the second being How did the agent not notice hundreds of plants during one of the quarterly inspections? QUANTUM RECRUITMENT EXPANDS ITS WORKFORCE AS CONSTRUCTION SECTOR BOOMS Confidence is returning once again to the construction sector and creating a boom which is bringing a golden period to workers. Salaries are rising and there are an increasing number of vacancies across the sector. However, in turn this does bring with it more movement in the sector. Managing Partner of Bournemouth based Quantum Recruitment, Jacqueline Entwistle, has talked about how the recent boom in the construction industry has led to her needing to recruit a new Trainee Construction Account Manager to cope with the extra work load. Jacqueline explained, “I am recruiting a new trainee to support the Construction Team. There were first signs of growth in the sector from midway through last year but it has been particularly significant since January 2014. I have clients in Bournemouth who are looking to increase their work force by between 30 – 50 % to work on new projects.” Jacqueline continued, “The growth is particularly good news for graduates who are now finding that there are plenty of jobs to apply for. I have also noticed a pattern of workers moving back to the UK. I recently placed a Site Manager in a role. He left the UK during the recession to work in Australia as he was struggling to find work here but has decided to return as he could see the significant growth and opportunities.” “There is a downside to a property boom in that it is becoming harder to find workers with the right skills set. A lot of workers left the sector during the recession and this has left a skills gap. As a recruitment company we are benefitting from this as Construction Companies are finding that they cannot recruit the workers that they need just by advertising their vacancies and they are coming to us for our expertise, knowledge and large network of construction professionals. We work creatively on their behalf to find them the right staff for their company and their vacancies. As well as the traditional methods of recruitment we also use recommendations, social media, networking and we think outside the box to recruit from further afield. We recently recruited a Project Surveyor for Bournemouth based Greendale Construction from Wales. He was delighted to relocate to Bournemouth!” Jacqueline went on to explain how salaries are being pushed up for trade workers within the construction sector. “It’s important that we research and keep abreast of rates across the sector so that we can advise our clients to make sure that they are competitive. Lamco Design LTD has been established since 1981. During this time we have seen many trends, and materials, come and go in our industry. With the never ending pursuit of fashion and styles, we have so many different types of finishes and materials available to us now to produce near limitless designs, styles and colours. We have always adapted the techniques of traditional wood working craftsmanship with modern machinery. The tradition methods still rule in certain aspects of bespoke furniture. In 2009 we invested in brand saws that cuts to the precession of 0.1 millimetre. We use on all of our cut board a 2mm PVC edging that is extremely robust and strong that has superseded its old fashioned ironon edging that is still widely used by other manufactures to this date. In all aspects of our manufacturing we have invested in the latest machinery to speed up our production to save us time in labour, and you in turn money! The materials used now for all aspects of bespoke furniture includes the ever popular Vinyl wrap, with a massive collection of colours from hi gloss to matte, and even now textured finishes. A new product taking

the industry by storm is the Acrylic. Acrylic is all about hi-gloss, available in all of the standard colours, through to some really funky contemporary finishes.These are very commonly used for hinged doors. Another popular system is the sliding door system. We only use the highest possible quality sliding doors the come in a massive range of colours. This include the frames, from hi-gloss lacquers through to brushed anodised colours. The panels to the doors can be decided up in to have ever many necessary to achieve the look you are after. In the panels you can most commonly use coloured glass, coloured mirrors and even wood in various colours. A high end Real wood veneers can be stained to any colour of choice then bought up to a hi-gloss lacquer, or Matt scratch resistant lacquer. This wood veneer can be used is so many applications, such as wall panelling, doors walk-in-closets etc. LG-Hi macs have introduced a natural acrylic stone. LG is famously involved with electrical goods, they have now embraced a totally new and futuristic product. This product is so new and will almost be the product of the future. We use LG-Hi-macs for

lots of applications such as, bespoke shaped tops, cladding of contemporary fireplaces, wall panelling, specialised worktops in the kitchen or bathroom, the list is endless. “Deep, punchy blues - think indigo and navy or Pantone’s peppy shade of cobalt, Dazzling Blue - can add depth and richness to a scheme, and the hues are so versatile they work in any setting, contemporary or traditional. “Dubbed as the latest alternative to neutrals, blues have really made an impact this year in homes, and the long-term forecast is that their popularity will last well into next year,” says Kate Tansley, creative director at furniture specialists, Multiyork. “Wonderfully versatile, there are so many beautiful shades of blue. And what’s brilliant is that they can be mixed and matched, so don’t be afraid to introduce a variety of blue hues into the same space.”

Brendan Herbert Laceys Solicitors Neighbour disputes Of all the issues that can place a strain on good neighbourly relations the most frequently complained of (and the least tolerable) are disputes about excessive noise. Whether it is loud music, excessive shouting and banging, or all night parties, excessive noise is a common problem. Excessive noise is actionable under the tort of Nuisance, which is broadly any condition or activity which unduly interferes with the enjoyment of land resulting in consequential injury. In terms of noise nuisance, the “injury” is the interference of a neighbour’s quiet enjoyment of their land. However, bringing private legal proceedings against a noisy neighbour should not be undertaken lightly: not only can the costs quickly become expensive, but can also inflame a situation when the parties concerned must continue to coexist as neighbours on a daily basis. Furthermore, there are often evidential problems in proving the scope and intensity of the noise in question, as usually the occurrence of the noise will be an irregular event, making accurate recording difficult. Happily, a statutory framework exists to make dealing with noisy neighbours more straightforward. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Noise Act 1996, local authorities must investigate any complaints of noise which is causing a nuisance. The authorities record the noise with specialist monitoring equipment, and if they are satisfied that excessive noise is being emitted, the attending officer can serve a warning notice or noise abatement notice. Failure to comply with such notices will result in a fine or prosecution, and can allow the local authority to confiscate any noise making equipment. Sadly, sometimes there is no alternative to legal proceedings, and this is the last resort to combat a noisy neighbour. When commencing a claim for an injunction against a noisy neighbour, there are certain considerations that the court will consider: 1. What is the source of the noise? 2. Is there an unreasonable use of the neighbouring property? 3. The nature and character of the surrounding area? 4. How long has the nuisance lasted? Good evidence of the noise in question is also vital to the success of any claim for an injunction, and if you are a victim of noisy neighbours keep a detailed diary of the time, date and specifics of the noise in question, together with video and or audio recordings of each incident. Most local authorities are willing to make available any recordings they have taken once their own legal proceedings have been concluded, and this professionally recorded evidence will play a key role in establishing the existence of a nuisance.

Working from home and the need for planning permission

I’m away on my holidays right now so this is only a short message to those who do not have a squeaky clean credit profile, something that has been difficult to achieve for a lot of people amidst the worst financial crisis since the 1930s. If this is you, read on… Back in the pre-credit crunch days, almost anybody could get a mortgage regardless of credit status as long as you were prepared to pay the rates. Then, everything imploded. There was hardly any money for prime cases. The lending market virtually seized and we were left wondering if lending would return to some sort of normality. As previous messages have stated, lending criteria have been softening since earlier this year. Higher Loan To Values (LTVs) began to appear. 85% deals have crept up to 95%. Buy to let deals are up to 85% LTV from 75%. Now it’s the time for adverse. It wasn’t long ago that you couldn’t get a mortgage if you’d missed just one mobile phone payment in the last 3 years. Times are finally changing. The clean as a button, low loan to value market is saturated and all loaned out. There’s hardly anyone left in that bracket that hasn’t been catered for already so what can the lenders do to attract business? We have been in discussion with some new lenders and old familiar names who are re-starting the adverse market. With residential rates starting at 3.44% and BTL from 4.39% for light adverse, now could be your chance to get moving again. Perhaps you want to move house. Maybe you want to remortgage to reduce debts or buy another rental property and you didn’t think you could get a mortgage. Well, think again. Self-employed with only 1 year’s books? No problem. CCJ’s? They can be ignored if over 2 years ago. Paid or unpaid.

With the average rates for commercial premises continually rising, an increasing number of people have begun to run businesses from their homes. Some of the most popular home run businesses include teaching music, child-minding, hair/nail salons, personal offices and bed and breakfasts. The planning legislation governing working from home is extensive. Under certain circumstances, the use of part of your home or an outbuilding as a base for a business may not require a planning application to be submitted. The key factor is whether the overall character of the dwelling will change as result of the business and if the related business constitutes a material change of use. Therefore, if the house no longer resembles a normal residential property as a result of the business, it is likely to require planning permission. So what constitutes a material change of use of your home? This can be the case where your business causes a noticeable increase in traffic movements or people calling at your house. Also, if your business disturbs your neighbours as a result of additional noise or smells and if there is a need to store items outside for the purposes of the business. These factors and more will determine whether your business creates a ‘material change of use’ and whether your home remains primarily a home, or has become a business premises. Another important note to consider is if you already run a business from home but you want to expand it. Despite the fact that you may not have needed planning permission in the first instance, you may find that its use intensifies over time. Although this is positive for the business, it can have knock-on effects to your neighbours which could be considered as a material change of use of the home. As such, planning permission may be required if the business is to expand. We have recently dealt with an office outbuilding with in the residential curtilage of a dwelling in Branksome Park which has been in operation for the past 10 years in its existing business use. We successfully secured a certificate of lawful use to confirm a material change of use had occurred but was now lawful. Following analysis of the application and the office use in extensive detail, the council agreed with our assessment and permission was granted for the continued use of the office.

ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO...

THE SWEDISH APPROACH TO GARDENING Swedish design goes much further than Ikea, thanks to Swedish garden designers including award-winning Ulf Nordfjell, who is currently preparing for his forthcoming show garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Yet it is possible to bring Swedish design to your own garden, giving it a more contemporary feel with clean lines and good use of symmetry, he says. “Sweden doesn’t really have the same tradition as the UK in terms of its gardening. England has a much richer history with many different styles, ranging from old and traditional to extremely modern,” he explains. “In Sweden we favour clean, simple lines and like to create the feeling of space. Most notably, Swedish gardens must be adaptable to the harsh climate, so we use materials that can cope with that such as granite concrete, timber 108

and steel. “We have extreme winters and long summer days and so have to carefully select plants that can cope with these conditions. In the summer when it stays light until late, you can go out and do your gardening at 3am.” Sharp lines can emphasise any structures in the garden and are unusual as they are so rare in nature. They can also draw the eye to your focal point, he observes. “One way to do this is by pruning hedges. In the Laurent-Perrier garden, I have pruned quercus hedges, which are underlined by low walls of travertine. These draw the attention to the pergola, where there is an elegant water feature.

Water can be a great way to add character to your garden. It adds movement and you can easily build around it You can be creative and choose a sculpture or piece of art for added interest. “Rather than placing it centrally, French gardeners will often place

statues to the side, which creates different areas of interest around the garden.” His favourite British plants include Anemone ‘White Swan’, Iris germanica, stipa grasses and taxus (yew) hedges. His Chelsea show garden will be a contemporary take on a romantic garden, acknowledging the heritage of the family-owned Laurent-Perrier champagne house while incorporating a modern elegance. He has chosen simple materials such as stone, wood and metal, complemented by perennials in a colour palette of soft pinks and blues, as well as creamy oranges, yellows and whites. Perennials will be planted in blocks in different layers, including iris, viola, dianthus, stipa and verbascum in full sun and thalictrum, gillenia, aruncus and anemones in half shade. Gardens in Sweden are very focused on spring, which takes place in April and May in southern Sweden and a couple of weeks from the end of May in the north. There’s another peak of interest in mid-summer, but the focus tends to be on structural design rather

than plants. While there is more interest in perennials these days, Sweden does not enjoy late-flowering plants that are abundant in this country, says Nordfjell. He has been inspired by many British designers, from Vita Sackville-West to Christopher Bradley-Hole, Julie Toll, Andy Sturgeon, Tom Stuart-Smith and Jinny Blom. But among his favourites is the late Ulla Molin, a Swedish designer renowned for introducing modernism in gardening by using strong materials, soft colours and fewer, more selective plants. His own personal favourites for each season, which are easily grown in this country and will add both colour and texture to the garden scene, include Cornus sanguinea ‘Winter Flame’ in winter; Scilla siberica, Helleborus nigra and Fritillaria meleagris ‘Alba’ in spring; Dicentra Formosa ‘Aurora’, Iris sibirica ‘Silver Edge’, Paeonia ‘White Wings’, Rosa moyesii ‘Nevada’ and Phlox paniculata ‘Rosa Pastell’ in summer; and Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’ and Gentiana makinoi in autumn.

BEST OF THE BUNCH CAMELLIA

Camellias can be pruned after flowering to keep the plant tidy or compact, although some have an arching open habit and aren’t improved by pruning.

They have a reputation for being difficult, but most varieties are hardy and if you grow them in a sheltered spot, possibly close to a wall or protected by nearby shrubs, they should give you glossy foliage all year round and beautiful, blousy blooms during the spring, in all shades of pink and some white or red. Grow them in pots in ericaceous compost and they shouldn’t let you down. The common camellia, japonica, produces spectacular single red blooms in mid to late spring and is best in borders, as it grows to an impressive 9m. C. ‘Leonard Messel’ is smaller and ideal for colder gardens on acid soil in a lightly shaded border, where it is not exposed to early morning sun. It should do well in a large pot.

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK: IN YOUR GARDEN Make the most of the sunny days this June and get out in the garden to tend to your plants and shrubs. The more time we spend early in the year the easier it makes the maintenance in the summer.

THREE WAYS TO... REVIVE YOUR GARDEN AFTER THE LONG WINTER Garden and landscape designer James Alexander-Sinclair, offers the following tips: Make sure that containers and window boxes get enough water. Lawns will be recovering well by now given a bit of warm weather so will need cutting. For the first couple of mowings, keep the blades quite high to avoid scalping he turf. Herbaceous plants will be growing fast, so make sure you have stakes in place now to support them before they get too big.

GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT TOMATOES FROM SEED It may be a while before any of us dare to put out our tomatoes, but now is the time to sow seeds indoors to work to a fruitful harvest later on. Sow seeds now a quarter-inch deep in pots or trays of good, freedraining seed compost and cover with a sprinkling of vermiculite or compost. Ideally containers should be placed in a propagator at a temperature of 1821C until after germination, which usually takes around a week to 10 days. If you don’t have a propagator, cover the pot with cling film and put it in a warm place such as an airing cupboard. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, tease them out of the original pot, holding the tip of the leaves, not the stem, and pot them individually in to 8cm pots. Water well and keep them at 18C for a few days, gradually reducing the temperature to 15C. Turn them regularly if you are growing them on the windowsill so that they grow straight and by the end of May or beginning of June it should be safe to plant them outside. If they outgrow their pots in the meantime, re-pot them into larger ones to prevent a check to growth. Good varieties include ‘Gardener’s Delight’, a cordon variety producing sweet, cherry tomatoes, and ‘Matador’, a cordon beefsteak which should give you plenty of large, tasty tomatoes.

RAMSAY BRINGS IT HOME After the success of his Ultimate Cookery Course, Gordon Ramsay has followed up with a new guide to home cooking. He tells Andy Welch about the pitfalls to avoid and offers a few recipes to try for yourself.

Whether you struggle to make toast or boast impressive kitchen skills, we could all learn a thing or two from Gordon Ramsay. The fiery TV star might be more famous nowadays for swearing at clueless restaurateurs and hotel owners, but don’t forget he’s also one of the best chefs this country’s ever produced, with 14 Michelin stars currently awarded to his restaurant empire. As he pointed out in his recent Channel 4 series Ultimate Cookery Course, he’s been a chef for more than 25 years, has worked for the best cooks in the world and, in turn, has taught some of the finest too. His new book and upcoming TV series, Gordon Ramsay’s Ultimate Home Cooking, which is due to air later this year, follows on from where the Ultimate Cookery Course left off, aiming to strip away any complexities about making amazing food in limited time. “I want to show that cooking can be fun and exciting,” says the 46-year-old fa110 ther-of-four. “It’s all about encouraging

people to take a fresh look at familiar ingredients, and throw in some new ones to create a delicious meal. I want people to have confidence in the kitchen.” He maintains that amateurs overcomplicating things is the biggest problem he sees in home kitchens, a place where simplicity and ease should be the main goals. He thinks people pile pressure on themselves too. “When you cook in a professional kitchen you must keep to a standard and ensure every element of the dish is perfect,” he says. “When you cook at home, you’re cooking for the people you love, family and friends. “Home cooking should be fun and if you make a mistake or something’s not perfect, it’s OK, you can keep practising. “Home cooks have become more savvy and adventurous with their ingredients and methods in the past 10 to 15 years,” he adds. “With the rise of farmers’ markets, artisan bakers and local butchers, there are a lot of different and interesting foods readily available. You’ve just got to learn to cook them properly.”

Of course, he recommends all of the recipes in his new book, but if pushed to pick out a few favourite dishes he’s particularly excited by the sausage and caramelised red onion hotpot and the home-made fish fingers, which give what can often be thought of as children’s food a grown-up, herby twist. Among other standout recipes are the beef stew with mustard suet dumplings - something every cook should have in their repertoire. Making home-made baked beans might seem like a faff, when the tinned varieties we’re used to are so good, but Ramsay’s version, served with crispy potato cakes, is definitely one to try, while the chocolate pistachio semifreddo’s easy to make but looks and tastes like something you might find in a quality bistro.

RECIPE

Home made Fish Fingers

TIP

INGREDIENTS

Drain on kitchen paper if necessary and season with a pinch of sea salt before serving.

500g white fish fillet, skinned (pollock is perfect) 4 sprigs of dill, leaves only 100g panko breadcrumbs 4tbsp plain flour

2 free-range eggs, beaten Sunflower oil, for frying Knob of butter Salt and freshly ground black pepper

METHOD Slice the fish into chunky fish finger shapes, down the fillet, rather than across it. Sprinkle lightly with salt, then cover and place in the fridge for 20-30 minutes to firm up. Finely chop the dill and mix with the breadcrumbs in a shallow bowl. Put the flour into another shallow bowl and season with salt and pepper. Put the beaten eggs into a third bowl. Using kitchen paper, rub any excess salt off the fish. Dust the fish pieces in flour and shake off any excess, then dip in the egg, making sure all the sides are coated. Allow any excess to drip off, then cover in the dill breadcrumbs. Roll the fish between your hands before cooking. This will get rid of any hard edges that might otherwise burn in the pan. Place a large heavy-based frying pan over a medium-high heat and add enough sunflower oil to lightly coat the bottom. When hot, shallow-fry the fish fingers on either side for three minutes. Add the butter towards the end of the cooking time to help the fish fingers crisp up and turn a deep golden colour.

Carrot, cumin & orange salad

SERVES 4

Ingredients 5 carrots, peeled and grated Zest and juice of one orange 75g pumpkin seeds 50g sunflower seeds 1½tsp cumin seeds, toasted 1tbsp Dijon mustard

1tbsp runny honey 1tbsp white wine vinegar 3-4tbsp olive oil 2tbsp torn coriander leaves 2tbsp torn mint leaves Sea salt

Method Mix the carrots in a bowl with the orange zest and juice, the pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Toast the cumin seeds in a dry frying pan until golden. Allow to cool, then grind in a pestle and mortar with a little salt, then stir into the carrot mixture. Combine the mustard, honey, vinegar and olive oil in a bowl. Add the mint and coriander leaves, then taste and adjust the seasoning as necessary. Pour over the salad and toss well. This can be eaten straight away, or will keep for up to two days in the fridge.

Sharon Canning Move on Rentals We have been approached by a prospective tenant who wishes to rent out our 3 bedroom property for herself and her children. It would appear she has recently split from her partner. She would like to move into the property with her ex-partner paying the rent. What is the procedure in doing this correctly? Do we issue a Tenancy Agreement in both their names? Are there any pitfalls we should be aware of? You could issue a Tenancy Agreement in both their names, however, this will give the ex-partner equal rights and also allow him to serve notice on the property. This could become messy if later on during the tenancy, things are not so amicable. I would recommend you issuing an Assured Shorthold Tenancy in her name with the children as permitted occupiers and then the ex-partner acting as Guarantor for them. However, you must still proceed with the referencing and credit checks on both parties to ensure suitability and affordability. I have found in my experience, that sometimes this is requested because the person residing in the property is not credit worthy, or they are looking to claim Local Housing Allowance (LHA) which with one name on a tenancy will be acceptable, however, the ex-partner suddenly doesn’t appear to be the ‘ex’ anymore, but they do not inform the council, which means they could be claiming fraudulently. Be aware of tenants offering six months’ rent in advance too. This also can mask other things, so as a matter of precaution, we always reference people over the age of 18. As Guarantor, it is important to ensure they have enough earnings to cover an additional rent, we also make sure the Guarantor is fully aware of their responsibilities, all too often a Guarantor thinks they are confirming the tenant is good for the rent and not that they are ultimately responsible for paying the rent if the tenant defaults. Where absolute possible, as an additional precaution the Guarantor should be a home owner, as they are unlikely to want a second charge on their home if the tenant does default. Always take photo ID and ask for utility bills from the last 3 months on all persons being referenced. Of course, all could be completely above board and the referencing will ensure you have done your due diligence. Frequent property inspections will highlight any anomalies.

But, while flowers don’t need much help looking wonderful, getting creative with your floral displays can add a whole new dimension to the natural wonders. Stylists Holly Becker and Leslie Shewring certainly think so. Though not trained floral designers, they “love to play and experiment” with flowers and are blooming with ideas for fun and interesting arrangements, which they’re sharing in their new book, Decorate With Flowers: Creative Ideas For Flowers And Containers Around The Home. It contains a hearty bunch of suggestions for use with flowers which the authors promise are “budgetfriendly and easy to find”, as well as ways to choose, make or jazz-up containers. Here’s a sneaky peak at some of the highlights, along with my 126 suggestions for petal power buys...

BOTTLE CHANDELIER A bottle chandelier can be made out of a wire loop, heavy-gauge florist wire, lighter-gauge florist wire, and vintage or interesting small glass bottles, suggest Becker and Shewring. You will need to hang it securely from the ceiling with a hook. Use light wire to wrap around the necks of the bottles - this only works if there is a rim to hold the wire below it, then attach the other end of the wire to the loop frame. Attach bottles at varying lengths and space them evenly around the wire loop for balance. Use as little water as possible in the bottles and pop a flower or two in each one. A cluster of small bottles could also be tied to the back of a chair, using light-gauge florist wire. Add blooms and ribbons for more pizzazz.

A SIMPLE WREATH Create a wreath using heaviergauge floral wire to form a circle. Make a series of small bouquets or bunches out of greenery, wrapping the stems of each bouquet together with floral tape. The authors advise; start at the top of the circle and attach the first bouquet to the wire form with more floral tape. Then work down one side, overlapping the next bouquet to cover the wrapped stems of the one before. When you get towards the bottom, add a couple of focal flowers to your bouquets. Once you reach the bottom of the circle, start at the top and work down the other side. If needed, fill in any holes by adding a bloom or two using wire.

CAN-DO BUNCH Flowers displayed in unusual containers always win compliments. Visit an Asian grocery store, suggest Becker and Shewring, for a little market style and look for canned fruits and teas, since they often have delightful colour and pattern-filled containers, which make great vases.

Empty the contents and then pop in a small glass inside to avoid rust or leaks. Arrange smaller bouquets in shorter cylindrical vessels, like tins, by applying a looser dome-like effect. Keep focal flowers higher and gradually add filler flowers, with the lowest blooms resting their heads on the rim. 127

Drizzle with oil, put on a plate, cover and place in the fridge until needed. 3. Preheat a large griddle or frying pan for about 4 minutes on a high heat. Turn the heat down to medium. 4. Place the burgers on the griddle or in the pan and use a spatula to lightly press down on them, making sure the burger is in full contact. Cook them to your liking for 3 or 4 minutes on each side. 5. Wash the lettuce, slice the tomatoes, peel and finely slice the red onion and slice the gherkins lengthways as finely as you can. Place all this on a platter with the burgers and buns.

Biomass Boilers Explained Biomass most often refers to plants or plant-based materials. Humans have harnessed biomass energy since the time when people began burning wood to make fire. Even in today’s modern era, biomass is the only source of fuel for domestic use in many developing countries. There are many different types of biomass but wood based fuels like logs, pellets and chips are the ones most commonly used. Logs and pellets are used for both domestic and commercial properties with chips being used mainly for commercial applications. Pellets are easier to use and much more controllable than logs running similar to a traditional boiler. They have hoppers which refill the boiler automatically at regular intervals which, depending on the size of the hopper, can hold enough fuel for a couple of days through to the entirety of the heating system. Logburning stoves and boilers have to be filled with wood by hand. They require considerably more work, and you will need a lot of logs to heat a whole house, but are generally cheaper than pellets if you have a good local supply. Why is biomass considered to be carbon neutral? Carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed from the atmosphere by plant life, using energy from the sun. The carbon dioxide emitted when wood is burned is the same amount that was absorbed over the months and years that the plant was growing. This is why biomass can be considered as carbon neutral. The process is sustainable as long as new plants continue to grow in place of those used for fuel. What do they look like? Biomass boilers come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The utility models look much like a conventional boiler and are usually sited in plant rooms or garages. Pellet stoves with boilers are more contemporary and are designed to be seen and enjoyed. Cooker models with boilers are also available to replace your existing oil fired Aga or Rayburn. Are there any savings to be made if I have a traditional boiler? Anyone off the mains gas grid can expect to see savings on their fuel bills of up to 30% possibly higher depending on the age of the boiler being replaced. Savings in carbon dioxide emissions are also very significant - up to 14.5 tonnes a year when a woodfuelled boiler replaces a solid (coal) fired system or electric storage heating system.

Why not give your property a facelift? Absolute stone and brick use a DOFF based cleaning system. It’s unlike any other steam system and can achieve temperatures 150°C. The DOFF system will remove dirt, paint, moss, algae, fungi, some graffiti, soot and smoke damage from almost any surface. The system uses steam so there is no need to use a chemical biocide during the removal process and the surfaces are dry within minutes. Unlike jet washing, DOFF uses steam rather than preasure to clean so it wont damage the surface being cleaned and also the steam kills any moss, fungi bio matter so the surface stays cleaner for much longer.

Is it easy to control and is there much maintenance involved? A biomass boiler will work in a very similar manner to a traditional boiler producing high flow temperatures however an accumulator or buffer tank maybe required to prevent the appliance constantly turning off and on. As with any biomass system there is a certain amount of maintenance required like ash removal and cleaning of the glass (if you have any)! Depending on the model chosen may mean a 6 weekly service by the owner but this should take no more than an hour. A mixture of cool Hollywood classics including Steve Mcqueen, Clint Eastwood, Jonny Depp. Tell us about your personal style? Laid back, at the moment I have a cast away style going on bleach blond hair overgrown beard and beads If you could cut any celebrities hair, who would it be and why? Has to be Beckham, he is the style guru for men, plus he is a nice guy, I would also love to have Karl Pilkington in my chair for a moan with me. Any trends you’re noticing for men’s grooming these days? It’s all about the retro look, at the moment every one is having parting and quiffs, this is cool and classic, also the kids are getting what their parents want for a change. How would your friends describe you? Honest, to the point, laid back, quirky.

As someone who has always struggled to motivate myself to go to the gym I’ve always been on the look out for a better solution. I stumbled across Fitter Than Fit by accident and thought I’d give it a go. Fun, friendly and most importantly, no egos.

What I loved about the classes was everyone was so friendly, Charlie and Mike who take the classes were very supportive and made it fun by throwing in some Thai Boxing exercises that have not only toned my legs and bum but also taught me some helpful self defence techniques, I couldn’t be happier with the result which took about 7 weeks!

You really do only get out what you’re prepared to put in, but to have people there to motivate you towards your goal makes all the difference. In the first six months Fitter Than Fit helped me lose well over a stone in body fat. No two sessions have ever been the same. It’s hard work, with a firm but fair mentality, but you will not find a more engaging, enjoyable and rewarding way to exercise. It’s changed something I used to dread into something I can’t wait for.

I am more confident, have more energy and feel great.
