City sees the light on Manotick Station Road Emma Jackson
emma.jackson@metroland.com
The most notorious intersection in south Ottawa could soon have a traffic light if Coun. George Darouze gets his way. The Osgoode councillor confirmed July 2 the intersection at Manotick Station and Mitch Owens roads has met the city’s threshold to
install a traffic light at that location – something residents have been demanding for years. “It’s very positive, said Bruce Brayman, president of the Greely Community Association. “It will slow down Mitch Owens a bit but it’s also a very dangerous corner turning on and off of Mitch Owens.

Manotick Village and Community Association president Klaus Beltzner agreed: “The traffic light is absolutely crucial for safety in that area, he said. The three-way crossing has long been a flashpoint for collisions and near-misses; the city has records of nine accidents at the corner since 2011. Left turns onto Manotick Station are particularly prone to rear-end collisions, because west-bound traffic is often going too fast off the nearby hill to stop. Vehicles also try to pass turning vehicles on the right hand side, which can land them in the ditch. Rear-enders are common the other direction, too, when east-bound drivers turn right onto Manotick Station toward the neighbourhoods further south. See MITCH OWENS page 3

Mitch Owens intersection meets conditions for traffic signals
Continued from the front
The light and designated left-turn lanes will help with these issues, Darouze said, and will also slow down the traffic – although the city’s speed data for Mitch Owens between Manotick Station and Bowesville roads shows the average speed is 83 km/h in an 80 zone. Brayman said a light will also make a world of difference for pedestrians and cyclists using the Osgoode multi-use pathway, which crosses Mitch Owens a few metres up the road. “If I had my kids with me, I would go 50 feet down the
road and use the crossing, Brayman said. Darouze said he’s hoping to get funding for the traffic signal included in the 2016 budget. It will likely come at a cost for residents hoping to finally see the roundabout planned on Stagecoach Road at Parkway and Apple Orchard roads; Darouze’s plan is to downgrade that $2 million project to a simple realignment, which would cost closer to $350,000. The savings can be put toward the Manotick Station light, he said. Brayman predicted residents won’t be too upset about the change. “People want it but I don’t think it’s a necessity now, he said. “It’s nowhere near as important as those lights. That’s a safety issue at high speed. WARRANTED
Darouze said the intersec-
tion didn’t meet the warrant for a light in the past because city staff were doing their traffic counts at the wrong time. He said locals have learned to avoid the intersection at all costs – opting to use Dozois Road or Old Prescott, which have lights – so the counts are lower when staff do their traffic studies. What really drives the traffic, Darouze said, are the seasonal groups like ultimate Frisbee teams attending tournaments at the private fields or people attending events at the Orchard View conference centre. Darouze said once he convinced staff to do their counts in the off-hours – including a Saturday – the intersection met the warrant two days in a row. It’s about time, said Beltzner, who has been pushing for the light since 2008. “We’ve been teetering on the edge of this for so long, so let’s go and do it, he said.

Osgoode Medieval festival ready to thrill in Osgoode Brian Dryden
brian.dryden@metroland.com
Someone in the King`s court has been murdered, and you need to figure out who did it. That`s the theme of one of the new attractions at this year`s Kingdom of Osgoode Medieval Festival, which is set to take over Osgoode July 11-12 as days gone come alive
at the 8th annual Kingdom of Osgoode Medieval Festival July 11-12. There is also an Education Day geared towards kids on July 10. Organizers are expecting more than 5,000 people to visit the Kingdom this year. “We get people from all over, it’s the biggest event we have in Osgoode each year,” said Connie Bazil of the fes-
tival. “Last year we had about 5,000, but the weather was bad. If it is good this year we should get even more.” This year added to the activities is a Birds of Prey show, a Medieval Murder Mystery and the festival has also teamed up with the Festival of India, which will see foods from India available on Sunday July 12 along with In-
dian dancers. One of the highlights each year is the Kingdom of Osgoode Medieval Festival Education Day, which is Friday, July 10, this year, and is geared towards kids aged 4-14. The education day includes games and demonstrations on everything from chivalry and armour to medieval music and archery. Children also get a chance to try their hand at using a
trebuchet, catapults and stilts. “It keeps getting bigger and bigger every year,” Bazil said of the education day that will see as many as 500 kids take part, many from area children`s day camps visiting the Kingdom for a chance to travel back in time. To take part in the education day, kids must be preregistered, which can be done by calling the festival at 613443-9090, or by going to the
festival`s website. “We need to know how many are coming for that, so it is best not to just show up for the education day,” Bazil said. The festival takes place off of Osgoode Main Street next to the plaza that houses B&H, the Red Dot Café and Scotiabank. For a complete schedule of events, visit osgoodemedievalfestival.com.

City to expand Carlsbad trickle system
emma.jackson@metroland.com
More than 80 new hook-ups could be added to the Carlsbad Springs trickle feed water system if an official plan amendment is passed at council. It was already approved at the city’s agriculture and rural affairs committee on July 2, and would promote rural industrial development along Boundary Road. It would also close the system’s feedback loop and add a redundant main line to make the system more robust. Right now, the Official Plan doesn’t allow for the system’s expansion, something the Boundary Road Industrial Landowners group would like
panding access to city water in an area where groundwater is poor, and providing more opportunity for economic development, Ostafichuk said. The landowners’ group, which filed the amendment, argues the system can handle much more capacity than it does now. That was certainly borne out in the city’s own studies, which found concurrent capacity – those times when everyone is drawing from the system at once - currently ranges between 15 and 45 per cent, not the 100 per cent the Official Plan assumes. “There’s opportunity here, Ostafichuk said. There’s already more hookups on the way. Another Official Plan amendment in April allowed about 112 severed properties in the area to connect to the pipe, and Ostafichuk said this proposed amendment will allow another 80 or so. Twenty-two of those are already approved, and the other 60 will have to prove the system can handle the

capacity. “This kind of opens it up a bit but we still have full control, Ostafichuk said. “If we feel our concurrent use is really starting to skyrocket, we have the right to (reject an application).

to change. They argue they can’t develop their lands without the hookup because the area’s groundwater is so poor. Indeed, that’s why the Ministry of the Environment installed the system in 1997 in the first place. Deep wells in the Carlsbad Springs area tend to have natural contaminants – high levels of sodium and heavy metals, for example – while shallow wells above the bedrock contend with bacteria leaching from nearby septic systems. “It’s kind of a catch-22, said city infrastructure planner Jeff Ostafichuk. The system itself is unusual in that it serves about 830 properties with water pipes about the same diameter of a garden hose, with a controlled trickle that fills a private storage tank throughout the day. As the water in the tank is used up, the system gradually replenishes it over a period of about six hours. The proposed amendment will serve two purposes: ex-

City to consider closing one River Rd turn lane Emma Jackson emma.jackson@metroland.com
City traffic experts will consider the effect of closing one left turn lane onto River Road in an effort to appease the angry residents who live along the street. Traffic services manager Phil Landry made the promise at a public meeting in Riverside South on June 24, where residents from Gloucester-Southgate and Gloucester-South Nepean made sure their concerns were heard loud and clear – so loud, they often drowned out Landry’s answers to their questions. River Road between Earl Armstrong Road in the south and Riverside Drive to the north has been inundated with extra traffic since the Vimy Memorial Bridge opened over the Rideau River last July. Landry said the city wants to encourage drivers to take Earl Armstrong instead, but it has to be done carefully. Traffic planners already tweaked the timing of the advance turn from the bridge onto River Road last fall so fewer cars can turn at a time. “If it takes a cycle or two to turn, the thought was maybe they’ll go straight down to Limebank because it would be faster,” Landry said. But closing a turn lane altogether is much more drastic, and requires further study to make sure cars won’t back up into Prince of Wales Drive on the Barrhaven side. “We can go back and take a look, and maybe we can go back to a single (turn lane),” Landry told the audience. “I’m not making any promises but we’ll see what the impacts are to do that.” For some members of the audience, that didn’t go nearly far enough. Rick Smithers received a deafening round of applause and cheers when he demanded the city close both turn lanes to non-local traffic in the morning and afternoon rushes. “It’s the rush hours where it gets really dangerous,” said Smithers, who noted that it can sometimes take him 10 minutes to get out of his driveway now that the bridge is open. “The traffic flow never stops. Our tranquility is completely gone.” Residents report bumper-to-bumper traffic on the two-lane road that often prevents them from leaving their driveways – especially since many drivers are also speeding, they said. According to city traffic data, the number of cars on River Road daily has jumped from 8,500 on average before the bridge opened to about 13,200 this spring. That’s still within the range that staff had expected 10 years ago when they were planning the bridge, Landry said. But where the traffic patterns differ, he said, is when it comes to Earl Armstrong. That road – a four-lane arterial designed to take most of the bridge’s commuter traffic – jumped from 4,600 cars a day last spring to nearly 16,000 this year, but it’s not nearly
as much as staff expected. The plan was for Earl Armstrong to take about 70 per cent of the commuter traffic in the rush hour, channelling vehicles to Limebank so they can head north into the city. But the split is more like 50/50 at the moment, largely, Landry suspects, because there’s a perception that River Road is a shortcut. Indeed, that route is about one kilometre shorter than taking Earl Armstrong to Limebank, but the more easterly route offers a four-lane segregated road with passing opportunities and a consistent 80 km/h speed limit. Make Heatherington the model
T
o solve any problem, you’ve got to start somewhere. When it comes to solving Ottawa’s problems with social housing, it might as well be Heatherington. The community located south of Walkley Road, roughly between Bank Street and Conroy Road, is typically in the news for the wrong reasons. Gang violence and drug-related crimes are an all-toofamiliar tale for this neighbourhood, which features a significant number of social housing units. These woes are among the reasons GloucesterSouthgate Coun. Diane Deans is asking for $250,000 from the city’s strategic initiatives fund for a pilot project that could help transform the area into one that features a more diverse mix of housing, civic institutions and commercial opportunities. Deans wants to engage with those currently living in the area as well as other community stakeholders to craft a new vision for Heatherington, using the strategic initiative funding to get the ball rolling. The vision could include leveraging land owned by the city as well as a parcel owned by Hydro Ottawa,
attracting private developers to change the housing mix in the area. The designation of Walkley as an arterial main street should also serve to bring added diversity to the area, offering new employment opportunities for those already living there. Somewhere in the halls of city hall, however, dwell those who don’t want that money specifically earmarked for Heatherington. Deans needed to muster support to have Albion-Heatherington specifically reinserted into the language of the proposal, after it was removed during the drafting process. Certainly there are other areas that need help. Richie Street and Bayshore are often mentioned in the same breath as Heatherington when it comes to crime and poverty. The people living there could use help too, but should a project in the city’s south end work out, there would be a model to work from. Ottawa has struggled to help those living in poverty amidst the prosperity of the rest of the city. We shouldn’t tolerate their struggles. Let’s give Heatherington a chance, and we’ll all be better off for it.

Y
ou’re probably tired by now of all the attention given to Canada Day 2017, which is still two years away, which means two more years of attention. But there are still some matters worth discussing while the topic of national celebrations is still fresh in our minds. There have been articles discussing people’s dream projects Canada’s 150th birthday. These range from outrageous to necessary to incredibly boring. More intriguingly, there have been articles on how Canada celebrated the 100th in 1967. There was what would be described today as an orgy of government spending, bringing museums, arenas and concert halls to places that needed them. Among the centennial projects, as

They are still with us, and thank heaven for that. Because it is unlikely that they would be built today. People didn’t worry about budget deficits in those days. Today, any suggestion of spending on things other than increasing trade or military might would be met with tut-tutting from editorialists and opposition politicians.

We have been conditioned to regard government expenditures, particularly on arts and culture, as wasteful. Yet we clearly needed those centennial projects. We use them today; they are part of the national fabric and our daily lives. Stephen Harper said on Canada Day that we are “blessed to live in the best country in the world. Few Canadians would question that. He also paid tribute to the hard work by Canadians in helping us achieve this status. And that’s true too. What’s also true is that those people had a great spirit of optimism about the future of the country. That was what distinguished 1967. Canadians thought they could do anything, and they were ready to try anything. now are striking. True, the world is a different place. Our economic situation is not as rosy. There are environmental problems we never imagined in 1967. Nor did we imagine terrorism on such a large scale. But in 1967, the Cold War was very much with us, carrying with it the threat of nuclear annihilation. That didn’t stop us from building museums, arenas and concert halls. So we should dream big for 2017. Dreaming big means dreaming bigger than monuments. We have enough monuments. But we could use more bridges, particularly around this town. How about pitching a bridge across the Ottawa River? Dreaming big need not involve flashy projects. We could also use more housing for homeless people, more shelters, more care for people with psychiatric difficulties. The word infrastructure puts many people to sleep, but the sewers and

The Super Kids program uses custom built two-seater derby cars specifically designed to allow children between eight and 18 years of age who have a physical or developmental challenge to participate. “MVCA is delighted that the Canadian headquarters of Super Kids in Peterborough is lending us two of their special carts this year so that we can offer children with special needs in the Ottawa area with the opportunity to participate in a soapbox derby,” Dubyk said, adding Manotick’s derby is the only one in this area to offer the Super Kids program this year. The carts on loan from Peterborough are expected to arrive in Manotick on Aug. 16. Registration for the event at Centennial Park, next to the Manotick Arena, is well underway with all the information potential participants need available at the community association’s website, manotickvca.org. Along with the races to be held on the soapbox racecourse on the Beaverwood Road hill, the races and picnic in the park will also include music, a craft table for children, face painting, balloon figures from Dr. Kaboom and a barbecue lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers. Participants must be at least seven years of age to race and can purchase a kit online, or make a race cart from items found around the house. The association has 14 available slots for riders in the seven-sponsored carts. Promotion of this year’s soapbox derby shifted into high gear in June during Manotick’s Dickinson Days weekend June 5 to 7, soapbox derby organizer Allan Haan said.
“Dickinson Days was the kickoff of the publicity for the derby. I’m organizing the derby as we speak,” said Haan, who was recently honoured at the community association’s annual general meeting for his service to the group. Haan’s last day as a board member with the group was at the AGM on May 28. Haan, who remains very active with community events through his work with the Manotick branch of the Canadian Legion and his ongoing
involvement with the soapbox derby, said the reason he stepped away as a board member is that he couldn’t guarantee he could attend all the necessary meetings because of all the other activities he has on his agenda. Although he’s no longer a board member, he remains as active as ever with community events in Manotick. “Absolutely, I am staying involved,” he said. “I’ll continue to do as much as I can for as long as I can.”

Last day of school was a welcome moment for us all
A
ll students at Northcote welcomed the final day of school We anticipated that last day of school for weeks before it finally rolled around. And all the time I went to the Northcote School, our final day before the summer holidays varied little. We would be on our very best behaviour just on the off chance that Miss Crosby would look on us kindly when she was filling out our report cards – although I know now, that a sudden burst of concentration and an effort to increase our production would do little to change the outcome at that point in the school year. The die was cast! It was long the custom to go dressed in our next-to-Sunday best on the last day of school.
MARY COOK Mary Cook’s Memories That meant wearing not quite go to church clothes but not play clothes either. Even Cecil would leave his bib overalls at home in exchange for cotton twill pants and a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows. That was just about as dressy as Cecil ever got. The night before the last day of school, Mother had us write notes to Miss Crosby thanking her for her year of teaching, and her patience. The five letters were obviously
similar since Mother sat at the kitchen table dictating them to us. And just about everyone in the Northcote School would bring an end-of-the-year present for the teacher as well. Those of us who had little or no money would take homebaking or preserves and one year I remember very well, one of the senior boys brought a dressed chicken, trussed up and ready for the oven. By the time Miss Crosby was ready to go home, the back lunch table would be piled high with

our gifts of thanks… the most simple of fare. Alas, the gifts didn’t sway Miss Crosby one iota when it came to the report cards. No amount of baking or preserves could produce a better grade than what she thought you had earned during the year. And just because it was the last day of school we weren’t excused from the regular routine Miss Crosby followed religiously every other day of the year. We still had a bible reading in the morning, followed by a long and purposeful prayer, and with our right hand over our hearts a final singing salute to the King. For the rest of the morning we had what the teacher called review work. This was when we had to remember what had been taught months before and come up with instant recall. If we failed to do so, Miss Crosby would send us home on the last day of school with ‘summer work’ as she called
it. And she would be right there to check it in September to make sure we had it done. The noon lunch was always a special time on the last day of school. All the bags were shared, so there was a special effort to make sure the lunches were not just plain honey sandwiches, or pieces of headcheese between two slices of bread. There always seemed to be lots of chocolate cake and butter tarts, and I can remember how my little friend Joyce would bring homemade fudge for the whole school. Once we had put in a full morning, Miss Crosby would announce that it was lunch time and we would all move to the outside…everyone carrying a bag from the pile at the back of the school room. Miss Crosby always brought a big plaid blanket… one of those that people used in open touring cars. This she would spread out
on the grass under the elm tree and the 18 of us who made up the entire enrolment of the Northcote school would sit cross-legged on the grass around the blanket. The lunches would be heaped in the centre, and this was the one time when Miss Crosby didn’t stand on ceremony. We could reach and grab as much as we wanted, all the time staying within the limits of good manners of course. When every last scrap had been eaten, there was rarely a crust left for the birds, Miss Crosby would open a story book she had brought from her home and read us the final chapters. It would be a book that she had been reading to us, one chapter at a time for weeks, and the last day of school was the culmination of that oncea-week read. See MARY page 22

A challenge to your family from mine
I
’ve mentioned the miracle of Sunday dinner before but it continues to work its wonders with my family so I’m mentioning it again. Just in case you missed it the first time. My Dad got sick and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer just a few weeks before I got married in 2007. I moved onto the farm in August and we started our Sunday family dinners shortly after that. I can’t exactly remember the reason but it was wonderful to have family together on the weekends at our place. It was one day of the week that everyone could count on to get together and see each other and spend time with Dad. It was much easier on Mom that way too, so she didn’t have to worry about keeping her house ready for visitors when she was busy taking care of Dad every day. When he was given his terminal diagnosis on September 11th, and went through various bouts with chemo haze and mental fog due to all the pain medication, Sunday dinner became something he looked forward to. Almost as much as his daily marathons of Corner Gas, and his afternoon nap. The girls would laugh and tease each other at the dinner table and he would just sit there and smile at them, forgetting his pain for a
DIANA FISHER The Accidental Farmwife moment. As we said our final goodbyes to Dad just four months later, the Farmer and I decided that we would continue Sunday dinners for the family. And truly, sometimes I think it’s the only way we would see each other. Because lives get busy and it is often difficult to schedule a gettogether other than for special holidays and celebrations. We have dinner for about 20 people, on average, every single Sunday. The only time we cancel is if we are out of town for some reason. On those weeks I’m always afraid someone is going to show up just out of habit and no one will be there to greet them but the dog. It’s like Thanksgiving dinner, every week. It’s no wonder I’ve gained 25 pounds since we married. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. People ask if it’s a lot of work and yes, it is. But it’s worth it. The Farmer does most of the cooking (of the meat, anyway). He loves to cook so he
does it up big. You don’t have to have a smorgasbord every Sunday. People bring dishes to add to the table and you could arrange for that as well. Or just have everyone pitch in and order pizza, or Chinese. Make a big pot of spaghetti or a pan of lasagna. It doesn’t have to be gourmet. The point is you are together. When people are eating and drinking together, they relax and feel welcome, no matter what they are going through at the time. That’s another thing the Farmer has established: on Sundays there are no serious confrontations or grudges revisited. The white peace flag is up and the farm is a sanctuary where no one passes judgment or voices disapproval. Save that for Monday. Sunday dinners are not just for immediate family. We occasionally have honorary or extended family members at the table. That’s a good thing, because if it was just the usual suspects
every week, eventually we would start arguing and throwing food, I’m sure. Having the occasional special guest keeps us on our toes and exhibiting our best behaviour. In recent years my Uncle Pat has joined us for several dinners at the farm. At first it was just Easter, Thanksgiving and special birthdays. Then he and his lovely Christiane started showing up to join us just on a regular summer Sunday, when they could enjoy the farm and the pool. Pat’s big, booming voice broke out in laughter and song and he seemed to really enjoy his visits when he was able to join us. Pat had a few health problems and he died fairly suddenly last week, at the age of 68. His wife has requested that we host a celebration of his life on the farm, because he loved it there. If your home isn’t big enough to welcome the entire family for a weekly or even monthly dropin, look around and see which family member does have a house big enough and see if maybe you can offer to potluck the food and do the set-up and clean-up. It is worth the effort, I promise you. theaccidentalfarmwife.blogspot.com dianafisher1@gmail.com
CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS What an absolutely incredible day! The weather did not cooperate, but it did not put a damper on the amazing Canadian spirit I witnessed on July 1. A sincere thank you to all the organizers and volunteers in Vernon, Greely, and Osgoode for the countless hours spent making Canada Day a special one for our residents. Thanks to all those who braved the rain and joined in the festivities throughout Osgoode Ward. Here are a few pictures from the day.
CONSTRuCTION NOTICES 8th Line Road Culvert Replacement Work Beginning on July 2 the City will begin work for the replacement of the existing 8th Line Road Culvert. WHERE: The culvert is located on 8th Line Road 0.46km South of Mitch Owens Road. WHO: The City of Ottawa has hired the Contractor, Goldie Mohr Ltd, to complete the work. WHY: The Contractor and the City of Ottawa will be replacing the culvert, which requires rehabilitation due to its age and condition. WHAT: Work will involve replacement of an existing culvert. WHEN: This work is planned to begin 7:00 am on Thursday, July 2. Completion of the project is anticipated on Wednesday, July 15.
BANk STREET BRIDgE OvER gREY’S CREEk CONSTRuCTION NOTICE *upDATE* Beginning in early July 2015, the City of Ottawa will begin bridge construction work. This work is being conducted to rehabilitate an existing bridge and extend the service life of the structure. The two-lane bridge on Bank Street (Regional Road 31) that spans the Greys Creek Municipal Drain, in the Osgoode area just south of the intersection with Snake Island Road/ Victoria Street, will be reduced intermittently to one lane from July 2 to approximately August 8 to allow major rehabilitation. The bridge was built in 1938 and was last rehabilitated in 1995. Working hours for the renewal work will include peak travel periods, so motorists should anticipate significant delays. Traffic northbound and southbound will need to alternate, so flag persons will control movement through the one open lane. Access for pedestrians will be maintained at all times through the work zone. Cyclists will proceed along with other vehicles. When the construction crew is not working, both lanes on the bridge will be open. The City of Ottawa has tools on ottawa.ca to help motorists and transit users plan their routes and manage their commute, including: • OttawaNav – the City’s mobile application for real time construction and traffic information • City of Ottawa Traffic Report – outlining citywide road closures, traffic restrictions and detours • Travel Planner at octranspo.com – transit users can chart and plan routes • Interactive traffic map – showing construction areas and live traffic cams throughout the city • Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) cameras • Cycling maps and information – detailing bicycle pathways and lanes throughout the city This bridge renewal is an Ottawa on the Move project. Ottawa on the Move is about keeping our community and economy moving forward through strategic investments in a number of transportation, water, and sewer projects to build a better city and create jobs.
Canada Day colours Mike Reid and his daughter Addy Woods-Reid, 4, show off their pride for their country during Canada Day in Barrhaven festivities at Clarke Fields Park on July 1. The father-daughter duo was in Barrhaven visiting family to mark Canada’s 148th birthday.

Preparation
In a medium bowl, combine the vegetable oil, ground coriander, cumin, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, pepper, and minced garlic. Place the chicken in a shallow container, and pour in the marinade. Cover the chicken and place it in a refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or up to four hours. Grilled Cauliflower: Thread the cauliflower florets onto four metal or soaked wooden skewers. In a small bowl, combine the oil, lime juice, cumin, coriander, turmeric, salt and pepper, and brush the mixture evenly over the florets. Place the chicken and cauliflower skewers on a greased grill over medium-high heat. Grill, covered, turning the chicken breasts once and the skewers occasionally until the chicken is an internal temperature of 74 C (165 F) and the cauliflower is tender-crisp and lightly charred, about 15 to 20 minutes. We half listened. We wanted to hear the end of the book certainly…but we dreaded the last paragraph. Because when Miss Crosby closed the book for the last time, we dreaded what was coming next. It was report card time… and there was no getting away from it. She kept the report cards in a big folder made out of advertisements from Scott’s Hardware store, the kind used to wrap around textbooks for protection. They were handed out by class; primer book first

and then right up to the entrance class. We would steal a peek and let out a roar of sheer joy. We had passed. We had made it into the next grade. Although it would be frowned on today, it was considered a pleasure to be handed a cleanup job before the little one-room schoolhouse was locked up for the summer. The senior girls washed down the slate blackboards, we younger ones took the brushes outside and pounded them together to get every last smidgen of chalk off them and the windowsills were scrubbed. a few of the older boys were shooed out of the schoolhouse, and their job was to scour the wood floor with soapy water, a good dash of Lysol, and a mop. Inside we knew Miss Crosby would be stuffing the several holes in the baseboards where on a good day we would see four or five mice scurrying from one opening to another. A textbook would be propped against each hole to further antagonize the field mice that tried to gain entry to our precious building. The year was coming to a close. You could be sure you
earned every last comment on the report card, be it good or bad. The long months of summer lay before us, and with mixed feelings of relief and joy, they too would be gone, and Miss Crosby and the spotlessly cleaned one-room schoolhouse would once again be ready and waiting for us.
