RCMP comes out in force to honour Owens Brian Dryden
brian.dryden@metroland.com
Mitch Owens has kept himself busy during the first 94 years of his life. He’s been a well-known business owner, a civic
politician, serving as the interim mayor of Gloucester for a spell, before eventually retiring from politics in 1991 at the young age of 70. See OWENS page 2

For Owens RCMP work was ‘the’ job Continued from Page 1
His efforts in the community have had such an impact that one of the routes to get to his current residence at the Orchard View Living Centre in Greely is Mitch Owens Road. But through all the years, one of the deepest and most cherished roles he has cast himself in has been as a member of the RCMP, and his long-standing association with the RCMP Veterans’ Association. It explains why an event to honour Owens’s association with the national police force attracted former RCMP commissioner Bill Elliott, numerous past RCMP colleagues and generations of family members, including great-grandchildren to the Orchard View Living Centre on Monday, July 6, to pay tribute to the man who is still proud to wear the red colours of the RCMP. As friends and colleagues came up to shake his hand, Owens – dressed in his red RCMP alumni blazer – was the star attraction at a ceremony that honoured his 50year association with the RCMP Veterans’ Association.
When added to his 20-plus years as an active member of the RCMP, it makes his connection to the national police force span more than seven decades. “I don’t think it is lost on anybody that to get here you take Mitch Owens Road,” said Suzanne Sarault, director of communications for the RCMP Veterans’ Association Ottawa Division. “Mitch is held in very high regard and esteem and I’m humbled to be here to share this moment with you,” said Bill Elliott, who was the first civilian commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, serving as commissioner from 2007 to 2011. Graham Muir, president of the RCMP Veterans’ Association Ottawa Division, said Owens work with the association over the years has been invaluable and that everyone in the local veterans’ association knows who Owens is and has had some dealings with him over the years. “As you can see, you have a lot of friends,” Muir told Owens during the ceremony. “When you were up in the North, the men then were tough, and those who know you, know
you are certainly tough.” Owens joined the RCMP in 1942 and spent much of his time in the North. He served on the St. Roch during part of that ship’s historic voyage through the Northwest Passage, and after spending time in the Arctic region he eventually ended up moving to the Ottawa area in 1953, before retiring from the RCMP in 1963. Since then, along with his other business and civic politics activities, he’s been a very active member of the local veterans’ association. While the dignitaries and former colleagues attending the ceremony praised and honoured Owens’s association with the RCMP that dates back to the 1940s, perhaps the greatest tribute he received at the July 6 ceremony was the large contingent of family members who attended. Owens’s son John Owens said his dad has always been proud to be associated with the RCMP and that the association has always been front and centre within the family. “To him it was never just a job, it was ‘the’ job,” John Owens said.
Brian Dryden/Metroland
Former RCMP commissioner Bill Elliott was just one of the dignitaries who made sure to attend a ceremony in honour of Mitch Owens in Greely July 6.

“Do you want a crumpet with that? is not a question you’d expect to hear often at the national training centre for the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind compound in Manotick. But it’s a question that very well may be asked more than once when the centre hosts a traditional British High Tea service on Sunday, July 26, as the non-profit organization holds its “UK Day garden party and tea. If you don’t have formal “high tea clothing, don’t worry as all are welcome no matter if you’re dressed to impress or just dressed for comfort. “People wear a wide variety of clothing. You do get the traditionalists, who show up with their top hats, but there is no formal dress code, said Steven Doucette of the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind. “We have some people who come every year, and they are more likely to get all dressed up for the tea. The British theme of the event comes naturally as the founder of the organization was originally from England, and the tea is in honour of that historic connection, Doucette said. The garden party and tea on July 26 starts at noon and continues until 3 p.m., and will indeed feature many authentic British delicacies such as imported English Double Devon Cream and scones prepared by the chef of Earnscliffe, which is the official residence of the British High Commissioner to Canada. As well, there will
be authentic British food and wares available on site courtesy of Clarence & Cripps Inc. from Hudson, Que. Along with the staples you’d expect from a traditional British tea service, there will also be musical entertainment by Just Lloyd & Lo from 1 to 2 p.m. Advance tickets for the event that can accommodate up to 150 people are $13 and can be purchased by calling the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind at 613-692-7777 or at the training centre at 4120 Rideau Valley Drive North in Manotick. The price goes up to $15 if purchased at the door the day of the tea. “We try to push for people to buy tickets in advance but it is usually a 50-50 split. Those who have come before usually get their tickets in advance, but for those who have never been they usually wait until the day and see what the weather is, Doucette said. All the money raised at UK Day goes directly into guide dog training programs, thanks to the help from the event’s sponsors who donate their time and goods to the event. “The scones and the Devon cream is donated. We have a lot of support and that helps us out so that the money raised goes directly into our programs, Doucette said. The tea service takes place rain or shine and there is both indoor and outdoor seating available. “It is primarily outdoors, but there is also indoor seating available because some people just prefer sitting indoors in air conditioning, Doucette explained. “We will have some guide dogs there, but we don’t allow pets at our

A year ago the trio of beer lovers behind one of Ottawa’s newest craft beer makers attended the annual Watson’s Mill annual beer tasting shindig. But something was missing when the men who started the Dominion City Brewing Co. showed up at the historic building in the heart of Manotick’s Dickinson Square. What was missing was the beer they brew. This year, when the Watson’s Mill craft beer tasting event gets under way the evening of Friday,
July 17, Dominion City Brewing Co. will be there again, but this time with plenty of samples of their product for others to enjoy. “The Manotick event was the first one we ever went to last year, but it was before we actually had any beer. We were just starting up in August, so we went there just to make ourselves known. It’ll be good this time to actually have some beer with us,” said Josh McJannett, who started the Dominion City craft beer business with business partners Alex Monk and Andrew Kent. “We’re excited about being there,” McJannett said
of being one of the craft brewers who will be showcased at the annual beer tasting event this summer. “The Manotick event is a great one, it’s in a beautiful building with a lot of atmosphere,” he said. “It’s a nice opportunity to get out and talk to beer drinkers about our product, and talk to people who are interested in brewing. “These events really help get the word out about us and what we have to offer. We try to get to as many as these events as we possibly can,” McJannett said. See BEER page 5

Watson’s Mill’s Laura D’Amico said the theme of the event is to emphasize the variety of beers being brewed locally. “Basically, it is geared towards the local area as all brewers are within 100 miles of us, she said. “It’s to showcase what is being produced locally in the Ottawa area and eastern Ontario. Those interested in attending should act quickly if they want to ensure they get to sample the various brews being created locally, as there is a limited number of tickets for the event. “We have room for 150 people to attend. It has become quite a popular event, D’Amico said, adding tickets are available at Watson’s Mill or can be purchased online at eventbrite. ca. Tickets are $35 each for the general public and $30 for members of Watson’s Mill, a historic grist mill located in the heart of Manotick village. Tickets include five, four-ounce samples, and guests can buy extra samples for $2 each. There will also be appetizers available and music by

the Swing Bridge Band. One of the highlights of the evening, which starts at 7 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m., is the People’s Choice award for the favourite brew of the evening. While the lineup of brewers was still being finalized as of last week, last year’s People’s Choice award winner Turtle Island Brewing Co. has confirmed that it will be back this year, along with other brewers such as Beau’s, Bicycle Craft Brewery and Whiprsnapr Brewing Co. “Turtle Island won the People’s Choice award the past two years, it’ll be interesting to see what happens this year, D’Amico said. For Dominion City’s McJannett, the emphasis on local products at the Watson’s Mill tasting event is important to the growing artisan brewing community. “We take a lot of pride in using local products in our beers. We buy as much Ontario Hops as we can, he said. The Watson’s Mill Craft Beer Tasting Event is from 7-10 p.m., Friday, July 17, at 5525 Dickinson Street, Manotick.

Dock at the end of the tunnel The long sought after boat dock for the boat launch beside Bridge Street in Manotick will soon be ready to be installed, says Manotick Village Community Association member Mel Roberts, who visited the site where the dock, above, is being built last week. Roberts, who has been advocating through the MVCA for a dock at the site since the previous Parks Canada dock was removed in 2012, is hopeful that the structure, which also includes an aluminum ramp, may be ready to be installed this week.

CONSTRUCTION NOTICES DALMENY ROAD CULVERT REPLACEMENT In mid July 2015, the City of Ottawa will begin construction work along Dalmeny Road for culvert replacement. This work is being conducted to improve your roadways and to improve transportation access in your community.
ALEX ROBINSON/METROLAND
Passing the torch Jérémie Lortie lights Karine Thomas’s torch outside Rideau Hall on June 29. The two ran sections of the 2015 Pan Am Games torch relay through Rockcliffe. The torch arrived in Ottawa via Gatineau and made its way downtown along Sussex Drive. The flame will reach Toronto on July 10 for the opening ceremony of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.
WHO: The City of Ottawa has hired the Contractor, A.L. Blair Construction, to complete the work.
IN THE MATTER OF THE ONTARIO HERITAGE ACT
WHY: The City of Ottawa will be replacing a culvert on Dalmeny Road, located 2.75km east of Stagecoach Road, Concession 3, Lot 35/36.
No ce of Inten on to Designate The City of O awa, on July 8, 2015, established its inten on to designate 180 Metcalfe Street under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act for its cultural heritage value.
WHAT: Work will involve the closure of Dalmeny Road, between Stagecoach Road and Dalmac Road, the removal of the existing culvert, installation of the new culvert, installation of guide rail and reinstatement of the roadway.
Descrip on of Property The Medical Arts Building, 180 Metcalfe Street, is a six-storey brick office building constructed in 1928. It is located at the corner of Metcalfe and Nepean Streets in the Centretown neighbourhood of O awa. Heritage Value The cultural heritage value of the Medical Arts Building lies in its being an example of the Art Deco style, its historical associa ons with O awa architect W.E. No e and the North American trend of purpose built medical office buildings and its contextual significance as a landmark.
WHEN: This work is tentatively planned to begin the week of July 13, 2015. Completion is anticipated by late August 2015, weather dependent.
The Medical Arts Building has design value as an example of the Art Deco style that was popular in Canada in the 1920s and 1930s. Art Deco is characterized by its decora ve use of strong ver cal lines, sharp edges, geometric shapes and stepped profiles. The Art Deco style is expressed in the Medical Arts Building through its massing, flat roof, copper panels and geometric pa erned brick panels. Its recessed mortar joints accentuate the sharp edges of the brick and the sense of ver cality is emphasized through the con nuous brick piers that break the cornice.
WHERE: Every effort is being made to reduce the duration of the construction impacts in your community. The road closure is required to reduce the construction time and impacts. Road closure and detour signs will be put in place and maintained throughout the construction period. As noted above, Dalmeny Road is to be closed between Stagecoach Road and Dalmac Road (open to local traffic), with a detour route established via Stagecoach Road, Springhill Road and Dalmac Road.
The Medical Arts Building has historical value as an example of the work of renowned O awa architect W.E. No e. Celebrated for his long career and versa le designs, No e also designed the Champagne Bath and the Central Post Office. The Medical Arts Building is also associated with the spread of commercial buildings into the southern part of Centretown, which was then a residen al area, and with the larger North American trend of purpose-built medical office buildings. In Canada, medical arts buildings were also constructed in Winnipeg (1924), Windsor (1930), Toronto (1929) and Hamilton (1930).

Ottawa police urge residents to lock up Metroland Media Staff
Summer is in full swing, which can mean a rise in crimes of opportunity. But police are hoping to head those off at the pass by sharing some advice. Ottawa police recently urged residents to keep the windows and doors of their homes locked when no one is around, and are now reminding people to ensure any valuables aren’t left in plain view in their vehicles. Acting Insp. Donna MacNeil-Charbot said in a recent statement that it’s just as important “not to leave valuables in plain sight in your vehicle where they may become accessible to would-be thieves.” Police also say not to leave personal identification, vehicle registration, insurance certificates or credit cards in your vehicle. “Even loose change can make your vehicle a target,” according to police. Any thefts should be reported to investigators by calling 613-236-1222, ext. 7300.
Council defers cash-in-lieu changes until August Emma Jackson
emma.jackson@metroland.com
Residents will have to wait a while longer to see if development funds can be used to repair and renew parks across the city. The planning committee deferred its decision on changes to the cash-in-lieu of parklands policy until its meeting on Aug. 25, to give councillors more time to really get to know the issue. “There’s a number of councillors who have questions and have suggestions to build upon (the staff) report,” said Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley, who moved the motion. “It’s to give us some time to get some more information to make the right decision on the policy.” The current cash-in-lieu policy allows developers to pay cash to the city when it’s not possible to build a park as they’re usually required when they’re contributing to local growth. Since the policy was adopted in 2011, nearly $30 million has been given to the city in lieu of parks, largely for the downtown wards where space to build new green space is limited. The money is split 60-40 between the ward where the development is located and a city-wide fund, and right now can only be used to finance new recreation facilities or to expand existing ones. But staff wants to broaden the fund even more to finance regular lifecycle upgrades and repairs at existing parks across the city.
There’s a huge backlog of aging facilities in need of attention according to review co-ordinator Jake Rupert, and funding in the regular budget for lifecycle renewal and repair is vastly inadequate to address all of the priorities across the city, said asset management head Kelly Martin.
“It’s to give us some time to get some more information to make the right decision on the policy.” ALLAN HUBLEY
Under the new plan, the cash-in-lieu fund could be used to jump start renewal and repair projects scheduled to be completed later in the term, if fixing them would better serve the existing and growth communities in a given area. A bridge financing system would be created to pay back the cash-in-lieu money from the regular city budget by the end of the council term. Staff didn’t originally support this idea, arguing it could cause regular budget funding to be diverted away from other priority projects, but pressure from councillors brought it back. “It is a risk that can be managed and we’re willing to work with that,” Rupert told the committee. Staff also wants the policy to restrict how
cash-in-lieu money can be used when it comes to promotional projects like plaques featuring a council member’s name, and to make permanent three contract park planner positions using a 10 per cent surcharge from cash-in-lieu projects over $100,000. Giving the staff full-time jobs instead of contracts would reduce turnover and allow projects to move along faster, staff said. The issue of councillor commemorations came up earlier this year when rookie River Coun. Riley Brockington discovered his ward’s park account was in the red. That was partly because outgoing councillor Maria McRae had commissioned thousands of dollars’ worth of bronze plaques to be placed on new park benches honouring veterans - but signed with her name. At the time, Brockington called for a spending freeze on the accounts in election years. Even with the extra time to delve into the impacts of the changes, the issue will still likely prove controversial when it does finally come up for debate. Already, College Coun. Rick Chiarelli was voicing concern that using the cashin-lieu fund for life cycle repair will let council off the hook when budget season comes around. “We should be making enough contributions at budget time to do (life cycle repairs),” Chiarelli said. “This is only coming forward because we didn’t put enough money in the budget.”

Veggies smarter than opponents
N
o good deed goes unpunished. We don’t have to live in a cynical world, but we must forgive Shannon Lough and Will Needham if they have lost some faith in humanity. The Kanata couple made a conscious effort to make good use of their front yard by planting vegetables in a homemade wooden planter box. Their decision was rewarded with a demand from the city’s bylaw services to remove the box because it’s too close to the sidewalk. The city’s bylaw chief called the 20-centimetre tall box “a tripping hazard. The local city councillor agrees, adding that work crews may need to reach underground wires or pipes. The wooden box doesn’t intrude on the sidewalk, but it’s nearby, technically on the city’s property. Any pedestrian in this city knows to pay attention as they walk. They are no more likely to walk off the sidewalk and into a visible planter than into a tree, a city fire hydrant, a high curb, a sign, a mailbox (community size or otherwise), a bus shelter, a bench, a parking signpost, or any manner of objects.
A wooden planter 20 centimetres high is not a death trap. The city is within its rights to ask for the object to be moved, but it is wrong to do so. And the need for access to pipes and wires? How often should any one home expect Hydro Ottawa or the water department to start digging up the lawn? A few feet from the planter is a paved driveway which would need digging up if a real emergency occurred. A planter and some tomato plants aren’t much of an obstacle compared to layers of asphalt. And should that unlikely emergency access be required, the city or hydro crew that arrives will be armed with a backhoe that would make short work of any planter. Lough and Needham did a good thing by turning a chunk of lawn – with its need for watering, fertilizing and trimming with no food value – into a veggie garden. And they say the planter sparks conversations with neighbours and passersby. Clearly another few square metres of lawn would not do the same. Sometimes the law is wrong. It should be challenged. Viva tomatoes.

Even Canadians can find a sense of adventure
S
o, as we’ve all seen, this Calgary guy goes up in the air in a lawn chair attached to about 100 helium balloons. He wants to land at the Calgary Stampede, which will be a great publicity stunt for his company, and he almost makes it, before parachuting to the ground and being picked up by the police and charged. What do you think about it? The incident has touched off what we might consider a typically Canadian argument, with some, including the police, arguing that his stunt endangered lives other than his own. Others say that’s a typically cautious Canadian attitude, that the guy should be applauded for his imagination and spirit of adventure, qualities that are in short supply in this country.

Only in the free-spirited Wild West atmosphere of Calgary, the argument goes, could such a thing happen, a guy strapping balloons to a lawn chair and just taking off without even a permit. In Ottawa, there would be nine city bylaws forbidding it, plus bans from the province, the National Capital Commission and the Department of Public Works. And maybe there is even a Balloons Canada with its own set of regulations. Well, it is true that people in the Nation’s Capital have other uses for lawn chairs, such as to annoy people at Bluesfest. And we do, here in the capital, deeply resent the idea that we have no imagination, no adventure. People who say we lack adventure have never been on Parkdale Avenue at rush hour. They have never taken the bus home Parliament Hill late at night on July 1. They have never tried to scrum Mike Duffy. Which is not to say there are no advantages to flying in your lawn chair. These advantages are best imagined when compared against flying in a commercial aircraft. First off, think of the leg room! Think of the security. You walk into your backyard and sit down on the lawn chair. No taking off your shoes or your belt. There is no seatbelt demonstration, no wrestling for the overhead bin. There is probably no food, but then there isn’t any on Air Canada either. Air Canada probably has the edge when it comes to landings. The

In the 24-hour daylight several hundred miles above the Arctic circle, the cruise ship Norwegian Star glided into the spectacular fjords of coastal Norway and in and out of tiny Norwegian towns steeped in history. Among the vacationers on board were Geoff and Maureen Johnson of Manotick. Both were blissfully unaware that thousands of kilometers away, across the North Sea and the Atlantic, family and friends were desperately searching for one of the Johnsons most treasured possessions – their beloved bearded collie Finn. The gentle, easy-going dog had been adopted by the Johnsons 18 months ago, after being lost or abandoned on the streets of a large Canadian city. While they were away on the cruise, he was left with a woman who had cared for him temporarily several times before. Her home borders on the Marlborough Forest, east of North Gower. The forest is the largest conservation area in Ottawa, covering more than 8,000 hectares including 2,000 hectares of wetlands, mixed and hardwood forests. Finn had never wandered off the property before, and was clearly fond of his caregiver, but after about a week with her he disappeared into the vast cedar scrub and swampland. It would be eight nights and nine days before his fate would be known. As volunteers streamed in to help with the search, the Johnsons’ daughter Keeley gave strict instructions that no one was inform her parents. “There was no point spoiling their holiday,” she said. “There was nothing they could do to help.” Every day Keeley put her two children in the care of a babysitter and went looking for Finn. She hired a man with an ATV to drive her deep into the forest. An 80-year-old man who lives in the area tried to help but he and she got lost. Wading through knee deep swamp slime, Keeley lost her cell phone. She retraced her steps and found it, still functioning, floating in swampwater. Its GPS capability led

The woman who had been looking after Finn went into open fields clutching a barbecued chicken, in the hope that the aroma would entice the dog back. She and Keeley plastered the area with posters bearing Finns’ picture. A neighbour of the Johnsons who recently underwent major foot surgery, drove the back roads with her husband calling the dog’s name. A woman Keeley had never met before spent hours day after day helping in the search. On day nine – the same day the Johnsons flew back to Ottawa -- Finn staggered out of the forest and peered through a wire fence at a remote house about six kilometres from where he disappeared. By luck, the owner happened to be in the garden. And she had seen the wanted poster. Finn was returned to his caregiver and rushed to a vet for canine first aid. He was later taken to his own vet in Manotick and given antibiotics and medication for the dreadful itching that accompanies “hot spots” – a condition often stemming
from humidity and insect bites that leaves the skin raw and bloody. His eyes were swollen shut and his lips twice their normal size. He had lost six of his 43 pounds body weight. He had suffered two serious puncture wounds on his hind quarters. “And oh boy, did he smell!” says Maureen. “Nine days in a swamp will do that for you. We’ve had him back for over a week and we still dare not tub him for fear of interfering with the healing. He is still starving and we have to feed him small meals often. But it’s all worthwhile. I cannot imagine life without him. What we cannot get out of our minds is what he must have endured in those nine days and eight nights in that forest. He is a very gentle and easy going dog but our vet called him Warrior. “I just hope that those other people you hear about who are searching for their lost dogs have a child like Keeley. Between the mosquitoes and blackfly and angry people yelling at her to get off their land, it must have been horrible. She was terrified for our sake that he might never be found. She never gave up. There should be a medal for what she
uOttawa searches for chancellor Alex Robinson
alex.robinson@metroland.com
The University of Ottawa has launched a search to replace Michaëlle Jean as the school’s chancellor. Jean announced in April she was stepping down from the position because of her new responsibilities as the secretary-general of the International Organization of La Francophonie. Born in Haiti, Jean came to Canada in 1968 as a refugee and was raised in Thetford Mines, Que. She replaced Adrienne Clarkson as the governorgeneral of Canada in 2005, until she was succeeded by David Johnston in 2010. She has served as the university’s chancellor since 2012 and will continue to do so until a new one is found. Nominations sought

THE
IN THE MATTER OF THE ONTARIO HERITAGE ACT
CAPITAL FAIR
Notice of Intention to Designate The City of Ottawa, on July 8, 2015, established its intention to designate 180 Metcalfe Street under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act for its cultural heritage value. Description of Property The Medical Arts Building, 180 Metcalfe Street, is a six-storey brick office building constructed in 1928. It is located at the corner of Metcalfe and Nepean Streets in the Centretown neighbourhood of Ottawa. Heritage Value The cultural heritage value of the Medical Arts Building lies in its being an example of the Art Deco style, its historical associations with Ottawa architect W.E. Noffke and the North American trend of purpose built medical office buildings and its contextual significance as a landmark. The Medical Arts Building has design value as an example of the Art Deco style that was popular in Canada in the 1920s and 1930s. Art Deco is characterized by its decorative use of strong vertical lines, sharp edges, geometric shapes and stepped profiles. The Art Deco style is expressed in the Medical Arts Building through its massing, flat roof, copper panels and geometric patterned brick panels. Its recessed mortar joints accentuate the sharp edges of the brick and the sense of verticality is emphasized through the continuous brick piers that break the cornice.

The Medical Arts Building has historical value as an example of the work of renowned Ottawa architect W.E. Noffke. Celebrated for his long career and versatile designs, Noffke also designed the Champagne Bath and the Central Post Office. The Medical Arts Building is also associated with the spread of commercial buildings into the southern part of Centretown, which was then a residential area, and with the larger North American trend of purpose-built medical office buildings. In Canada, medical arts buildings were also constructed in Winnipeg (1924), Windsor (1930), Toronto (1929) and Hamilton (1930).

Objections Any person wishing to object to this designation may do so by letter, outlining the reasons for the objection and any other relevant information. This letter must be received by the Clerk of the City of Ottawa either by registered mail or personally delivered within 30 days of the publication of this notice. When a notice of objection has been received, the Council of the City of Ottawa will refer the matter to the Conservation Review Board for a hearing and a report.
Contextual value is found in the building’s character as a neighbourhood landmark due to its prominent corner location on Metcalfe Street, a major north-south street that terminates at Parliament Hill.

A handshake could predict honesty and integrity
F
ather always said you could tell much about a man, by the shake of his hand. A good Ottawa Valley grasp, one that forced your fingers into a knot, meant the hand shaker was a man of honesty and integrity. Ignore the fact that for we young children, these bone-crunching handshakes left us maimed for days. A hold on a hand was far more important than inflicted pain as a result. A good steady and firm pump should always accompany the grasp too. Anything else was called a dead fish greeting. And it didn’t matter how often my father met a neighbour in a day, they always greeted each other with an outstretched hand. Their paths may have crossed at Briscoe’s store, and then again at the mailbox, and maybe even later in someone’s barn yard, but always the hands were thrust out to offer a bone
MARY COOK Mary Cook’s Memories crunching Renfrew County greeting. We children were taught at an early age that learning to shake hands was just as important as learning to add and subtract at the Northcote School. And if the brothers were greeting someone, their caps had to be quickly taken off their heads, tucked under their arms, and then their hands were thrust out for the shake. In the 1930’s it was considered the height of disrespect for any young lad to talk to an adult with his cap on. Father said much could be learned from a handshake. Take old Herman down the
road. He was a whopper of a man with wide shoulders and hands like frying pans. He had a wonderful German sense of humour, and Father thought he was one of the best neighbours we had in Renfrew County. And I always thought it was because when Herman took a hold of your hand, he covered your limb right up past your wrist. By the time he finished pumping, your shoulder felt like it had been put in a jackhammer. Never mind, Father said, he was honest, sincere, and a man of his word, and his handshake proved it. Then again there was another man on one of the side roads
UNBELIEVABLE

who Father had little time for. In fact Father thought he and the word honesty had never become acquainted. We often heard stories of turkeys that had vanished right out of the yard, and heifers that became mysteriously separated from the herd. No one ever came right out and said this neighbour had taken the turkeys or heifers, but we always knew that because of this man’s weak handshake that put him in the class of possible candidates. Once Father said his wife had to iron his body before he could get his pants on because he was so crooked. I don’t have to tell you what mental pictures that little comment created in my already fertile young mind. As I pictured the man flat out on the kitchen table being straightened out with a flat iron so he could get into his trousers, caused me to cringe at the very thought. And it was all because of
this poor man’s unfortunate handshake. And I often recollect back to those days in the ’30s where deals were made verbally in the barnyard -- two farmers talking about buying or selling livestock, or feed, or agreeing on a trade. They got all the particulars out of the way, over much nodding of heads and long pauses where the silence could be heard in Admaston. And I would watch the transactions transpire, knowing so well the sequence of events from having viewed them often in the barnyard or the drive shed. Father and his neighbour would banter back and forth, as if they were sparring in a ring. Then would come the long pause. Father would look up to the clouds or the roof of the drive shed. He’d squint with his eyes half shut, take a long drag on his pipe and blow a slow cloud of blue smoke in the air.
Then almost as if there had been a silent signal, the two men would thrust out their hands. This shake would be different from the pumping we saw in a greeting however. There would be that firm grasp. Both hands would go up, and then come down, only once. It was as if they were saying, “Good. It’s a deal. The matter is closed. There is nothing more to talk about.” Farms traded with a handshake. Crops sold by a handshake, and a transaction that got us our first Model T in exchange for nine loads of sand from our gravel pit was closed when my Father and our neighbour met, discussed the deal and closed it with a one pump handshake. No wonder from the time we were able to utter “Good day,” or “How do you do,” our mother thought it her duty to instruct us on the rudiments of handshaking.

Vitor of Barrhaven visits the farm
T
his waking up at 4am is for the birds. Literally. The little squawkers are so excited about the rising sun; they just can’t keep their delight to emselves. They sit in the tree positioned directly outside my bedroom window and sing their song of love to the warm rays of the glowing orb, waking me from a deep sleep. A sleep that I have zero hope of returning to, now that the sun is up. I try, for three more respectable hours, to get some sleep. I shut the window, pull the window shade down, fluff my pillows and squeeze my eyes shut. Then I hear the dog. He figures, if the birds are up, the people should be up, and that means he might be getting fed soon. He too, sleeps under our bedroom window, where we can hear every move he makes. His low harrumph wakes up the sheepdog, who starts yipping and yapping at the cows, just emerging from their night in the barn. The cows call to their calves with a low moo that becomes increasingly agitated; a bellowing foghorn in the morning dew. Good thing I’m a morning person. I throw the covers back and get ready to start the day. On my way down the stairs, my eye is drawn to the window where I am pretty sure I see a skunk making its way across the porch. Not paying attention to my step, I trod on and then trip over a cat. Adrenalin rush is better than caffeine. I’m awake now. I put the coffee on, boil some water for my hot lemon, and feed the dog. We have a houseguest this

The Accidental Farmwife week: Vitor of Barrhaven is here while his human is away on holiday. My city daughter’s city dog watches me silently from his crate. I almost forgot he was there. I have learned to clip the leash on him as soon as I open the door. He’s very jumpy first thing in the morning and he also loves to chase cats. We step out onto the porch and I take a quick look around for the skunk before feeding the cats. Six of them peer at us from under lawn furniture, scowling and horrified as if to ask, “what fresh hell is this?!” Vitor’s owner works from home so I’m told he gets about three walks a day. He’s a lean, muscled Rottweiler / Shepherd mix, about 2 years old I think, and he needs plenty of exercise. We start each day with a good 45-minute walk and then I tie him up outside for a couple hours while I work around the house. Sometimes I let him run free around the property but he doesn’t know what the rules are so he keeps coming back to the porch and whining at the door. Either that or he chases cats, rolls in the spot where he found something dead or wanders over to eat whatever Cody has left in his bowl. I feed and water him and watch as he tips his food bowl over and picks the kibble out of the grass. It’s his morning ritual. Chelsea
broke off her chain last night and came to the fence to investigate this new smell/animal. The first meeting did not go well. I put Vitor in his crate in the house while the Farmer went to fix Chelsea’s lead. The little sheepdog, aka Houdini, found a gap in the fence and wriggled through it. She crept up onto the back porch and sniffed through the screen door at Vitor. Vitor was named after a UFC fighter. He has a lot to live up to. He held his own in a swim meet with my other daughter’s four hunting dogs: she threw the rubber bird into the creek and they splashed in, racing for it and Vitor got it first, nine times out of ten. He quickly learned the hierarchy of dogs in that little clan, as Beretta the boss emerged onto the shore first to demand the duck be dropped at her feet. He only challenged her once. It was pretty neat to watch. Soon she had her own personal duck-fetcher. My daughter might have a challenge on her hands when she returns from holiday. Vitor may not be content with a simple romp in the park anymore. He is ready for doggy Olympics. He has been training on the farm. theaccidentalfarmwife.blogspot.com dianafisher1@gmail.com

Triple berry semifreddo great summer dessert
Semifreddo means “partly cold” in Italian. It is a simple and seasonal dessert that can be made ahead of time. Preparation time: 30 minutes. Freezing time: four hours or overnight. Standing time: about one hour. Serves eight. Ingredients
• 250 ml (1 cup) strawberries, halved •125 ml (1/2 cup) each raspberries and blueberries • 75 ml (1/3 cup) honey • 5 ml (1 tsp) grated orange rind • 125 ml (1/2 cup) plain Greek yogurt • 250 ml (1 cup) whipping cream • 25 ml (2 tbsp) orange liqueur Topping • 375 ml (1-1/2 cups) sliced strawberries •175 ml (3/4 cup) each raspberries and blueberries •7 ml (1-1/2 tsp) granulated sugar
Preparation
In food processor, puree halved strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Place in a medium bowl and mix with 25 ml (two tbsp) of the honey and orange rind. In small bowl, whisk together yogurt and remaining honey. Add to berry mixture. In large bowl, using electric mixer, beat cream and liqueur until soft peaks form. Fold berry-yogurt mixture gently into whipped cream. Spoon into parchment lined 1.5 litre (8 x 4-inch) loaf pan. Smooth top, cover and freeze for four hours or until firm. Place loaf pan in refrigerator for about one hour prior to serving. Topping: In a medium bowl, combine the sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and sugar. Lift the dessert out of the pan, and remove the parchment and cut into 2.5-cm (one-inch) slices. Serve with sweetened berries. Foodland Ontario “That was way to easy!”

Alfie Hi, I’m Alfie the (big!) mini Goldendoodle. I’m almost three years old and I’ve got a pretty fantastic life - especially now that my mom, who’s a teacher, is on vacation all summer!! We do so many fun things like swimming and hiking that sometimes I’m too tired to jump all over my dad when he gets home. But that’s ok, it just means more cuddles and belly rubs later. I’m very good at helping keep the neighbourhood clean because I eat all the litter on the ground. Kleenex is my absolute favourite!! I love going to the park and playing with my friends, both dog and human whom I’ve known since I was a puppy. It’s even more fun when the ground is covered with cold, fluffy white stuff! When I’m at home, I like to chew on bones, pull on rope toys, chase Pepper the cat and sit high up on my window bench and watch kids play at the park. At night, I sleep on the bed between my mom and dad and I don’t believe them when they tell me I snore!
