“The most important thing here is that ROSSS has made a long term investment in a permanent home,” said Rideau-Goulbourn Coun. Scott Moffatt, who is chairman of the Manotick Mill Quarter Community Development Corporation.

“This is great news for ROSSS, for Manotick and for Dickinson Square,” Moffatt said.

“ROSSS has been an ideal tenant since 2007 and has taken great care of the Ayres Building.

I expect that to continue and only get better.”

Moffatt wouldn’t comment on the details of ROSSS’s winning bid for the building, but said it is a win-win situation for the community.

“As for their successful bid, certainly their role as the current tenant was an important one. ROSSS expressed interest from the outset in working to make the Ayres Building their home and I was pleased that they managed to present a successful bid,” he said.

As an organization, ROSSS is happy it has secured its home base to provide services to Ottawa’s rural communities in the heart of Manotick’s Dickinson Square area.

“We were all really excited about the idea of calling 1128 Mill St. home,” said Courtney Rock, community outreach manager of ROSSS. “The waiting was the hardest part, but now the wait is over and we couldn’t be happier.”

In fact, ROSSS knew it was successful in its bid for the Ayres Building but had to keep the news to itself until getting the go-ahead from city officials to make it public.

“We all had to practise our poker faces,” said Mary Acton-Bond, executive director of ROSSS. “Keeping news like this under wraps was hard work, and it seemed like everywhere I went people were asking questions and trying to read my expression to see which way the bid went.”

The building started out as a bank, until 1963 when the Kiwanis purchased the space and transformed it into the Manotick public library.

The building got its current name when it was dedicated to Frank E. Ayers, in recognition of his contribution as the former chair of the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority.

Organizers looking to grow Capital Fair into biggest in region More than 100,000 people expected to attend this year Erin McCracken erin.mccracken@metroland.com

In its quest to become the largest fair in eastern Ontario, the Capital Fair board is making progress in expanding the event’s entertainment and attractions lineup.

Organizers have their eye on one day bringing in bigname stage acts, though for now they’re focused on showcasing local bands and performers.

“It’s more just to give people something pleasant to enjoy while they’re at the fair,” event spokesman Harley Bloom said of this year’s fair lineup. “We decided not to go with the big concerts primarily (because) we’re not there yet, but we’re moving toward it.

“We’re sort of on a fiveyear plan to make this the biggest fair in the area.”

It is all part of a new vision for the fair, which was known for decades as the Gloucester Fair and rebranded last year as the Capital Fair. It was also moved from May to August and expanded to 10 days instead of the four days the fair has previously been staged.

This year’s event again takes place at the Rideau-Carleton Entertainment Centre and Raceway, from Aug. 21 to 30.

Securing star power comes with a price.

“We’re not prepared to take the financial burden on at this

point,” said Bloom.

For that reason, the fair’s board of directors is working with the province to secure funding to try and attract some of that star power in the future.

“Hundreds of thousands of dollars go into bringing in a decent act, and of course because we’re an outside venue it’s weather dependent, which makes it difficult for us,” Bloom said.

Currently, organizers are focused on “building a solid family show” and are once again offering free admission to the grounds and free entertainment in the children’s area, he said.

An agricultural component has been added, complete with 4-H cattle and horse shows.

The Canada Agriculture and Food Museum will also be giving demonstrations, including a lesson on churning butter.

“We had 4-H 20 years ago so we’re actually really excited to have the kids coming back again,’ Bloom said. “The 4H component is the beginning of the agriculture program for us.”

Also new this year, monster truck shows will entertain on three days instead of two, and a demolition derby has been added to the lineup on Aug. 27.

“We’re embracing the fact that we’re a family show,” Bloom said. “We want to

make it as kid-friendly as possible and then offer as much as we can to the adult population as well.”

Another new feature is a three-day seniors’ bridge tournament from Aug. 25 to 27, which will cost $5 to enter and will include door prizes, a $200 daily prize board, free refreshments, guest speakers and a presentation by the Jamie Oliver Food Revolution.

“We’ve been looking for a way to invite the seniors to the fair, and this turns out to be one of probably the most popular activities that seniors have in the area that we could produce,” Bloom said. “We’ve got to try and provide something for everybody – that’s our goal.”

The midway will also be growing in size, making it the largest in eastern Ontario.

“This year it’s going to be even bigger – more rides, better rides, bigger rides,” said Bloom.

Half-price midway bracelets are available in advance of the fair for $18 at Quickie convenience stores. The bracelets will be sold for $36 at the door. Onsite parking at the fair will be available, but a $2 shuttle bus will be running between the South Keys Transitway and the fair, Friday to Sunday.

Artist feels welcomed in Manotick Caroline O’Neill

Manotick residents will find familiar sights residing in the restaurant Take Another Bite. Its walls are the temporary home to paintings of Watson’s Mill and the village’s Main Street. The show, called Take Another Look, runs until mid-September.

It debuted in early July at an open house on July 16, with visitors pointing out places and activities they’ve taken part in. Beyond paintings of Manotick, patrons will view the Canadian Tulip Festival and running events from Ottawa Race Weekend.

The show’s artist, Jess Fleury, said she loves hearing about the different connections people have to the places she paints.

“I’ve really enjoyed the conversations I’ve had with people who see something or remember something after looking at one my paintings,” said Fleury, the paintings are part of her My Manotick and My Ottawa collections.

She recounted a man who was looking at one of her paintings of the Gatineau Hills saying they were where he almost proposed to his girlfriend. She also had someone purchase a painting of the Rideau Canal because it represented her decision to stay in Ottawa after reluctantly moving.

“It’s neat to hear what people see and think when they look at a piece of artwork,” she said.

Fleury often paints places she’s visited with her sons Oliver and Alastair.

“Other people looking at them can revisit times when they were there and what they were experiencing.”

Fleury, who said she has always loved painting, used it to cope when her husband, Paul, was deployed to Kosovo in 2011 for a 10-month tour.

At the time, which she calls the longest year of her life, her sons were two and six. Having only been in Ottawa for a year around her husband’s deployment, Fleury and her sons were able to explore Ottawa and create visual memories of some of their favourite places. Oliver and Alastair, who are now 10 and six, enjoy visiting the bridge at Watson’s Mill.

“It was very therapeutic in the middle of the night to be able to go and work on something productive,” she said.

By the time her husband returned, Fleury had painted enough artwork to apply to a gallery. Her work is now regularly shown at the Foyer Gallery at the Nepean Sportsplex.

In addition to painting, Fleury is a teacher who taught at Manotick Public School this past year. She teamed up with another teacher and Grade 4 and 5 students to paint a mural that will be going up in the kindergarten yard before fall.

Fleury said teaching at the elementary school and working with Take Another Bite showed her Manotick’s encouraging community.

“One thing I’ve learned is how tightknit the business community in Manotick is. People are very supportive and people are very nice,” she

said. “It’s a wonderful atmosphere.”

Fleury said she looks forward to explore more of Ottawa and Ontario by visiting with her family and continuing to paint. She has already visited Perth, which she called lovely, and said she would love the chance to paint Ontario small towns.

Make parties earn your vote

Y

ou think they could have at least waited for the summer holidays to come to an end.

But now, with still a month left of our traditional summer season, we’re officially into a federal election campaign.

Of course, we’ve been in an unofficial campaign for some time now with all the attack ads that seem to have been running on every television station for months, and politicians criss-crossing the country and child benefit payouts landing in families’ mailboxes.

But the activity accelerated in the last few days of July with government announcements coming fast and furious. Conservative MPs have been doling out big bucks in big funding announcements in a final frenzy of shoveling taxpayer money out to various infrastructure projects and Canada 150 celebration initiatives. Here’s a promise of up to $1 billion for Phase 2 of Ottawa’s light-rail project, here’s some cash for a football field with lights in OrlÊans, or $880,000 or so for an arena upgrade project in Manotick, to name just a few.

Usually, such announcements are considered, vetted and then spread out to maximize the impact, but with the writ about to be dropped, the money needed to be presented before Parliament was dissolved and sitting members go from being MPs to mere candidates without government funds under their control.

Handing out money just prior to an election and supplementing it with promises during the campaign is a time-honoured political tradition. All parties, once they take power, can’t seem to resist bribing the electorate with their own money.

They do it, of course, because it usually works.

And it can work time and time again.

But remember, it’s our tax money coming back to us, not an altruistic gift from a Sugar Daddy.

After two of the shortest federal election campaigns on record, you will have plenty of time this year to evaluate the parties, candidates and the leaders in one of the longest campaigns ever.

Become informed and make a decision based on policies, character and vision. Don’t vote just for the highest bidder. It only encourages them.

’ve often heard people say that we treat mental illness differently from physical illness.

But in our health-obsessed society, I think we’re starting to judge people’s physical health in a negative and blaming way. A loved one has cancer and everyone immediately asks about their dietary and lifestyle habits, as if to say, “Did they bring this on themselves?�

Everywhere we look, we see “superfoods,� detox diets, cancerfighting veggies and arguments for an array of activities, foods and spiritual callings that will save us from death.

Newsflash: We’re all dying.

Some of us may live longer than others; some may suffer ill health in that long life; others may die prematurely. We have an element of

have a stroke or a heart attack in their 40s.

Although it’s tempting to try the latest death-defying craze – coconut oil, gluten-free food, vegan diets, juicing – we really can’t determine how it will impact us in the end.

Take kale, for example. This hearty, leafy cabbage has been touted as a miracle food. Eat it every day, we’re told. It’s rich in all kinds of nutrients, including iron, calcium and vitamin C. For the vegetarians, it’s a good, protein-rich green. You can put it in salad, stews, make it into chips and it’s super low calorie.

Not only that, but we’re told if you eat kale daily, you’ll ward off cancer. What’s not to love about this bitter legume?

Kale has become a religion in North America. Last year a satirical article on a global kale shortage went viral and there was a rush on organic farm markets not seen since

the bank rush in 1929. (I’m exaggerating, but you get the point – kale’s popular).

But maybe kale’s not all it’s cracked up to be. American microbiologist Ernie Hubbard claims kale—and other cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and collard greens – are hyper-accumulators of heavy metals, including thallium, which can cause a number of chronic symptoms as those who ingest it are slowly poisoned over time.

Hubbard’s work is ongoing, entirely unproven elsewhere and may turn out to be total hogwash.

In the meantime, it should cause us all to question, could too much of anything – even miraculous, beautiful, multi-hues-of- green kale – be a bad thing? We really don’t have a clue.

We’re all going to die. Until then, we have to make the best choices for our health with the best information

we’ve got, which is relatively little and always changing.

So the next time you hear someone’s sick, whether it’s with depression, flu or cancer, try not to pinpoint the lifestyle trigger for it.

They’re just human, and as it is for you and me, death is inevitable.

The 2015 Toronto Parapan Am Games will begin Friday with a torch lighting ceremony using a flame lit on Parliament Hill on Aug. 3.

After bringing the flame to life, the first torch relay runners then lapped the Hill, among them past para-sport medal-winners.

At the same time, a second torch was lit in Niagara Falls, and the two flames will meet in Toronto on Aug. 7 for the opening of what will be the largest ever Parapan Am Games.

The five-day torch relay will cover more than 700 kilometres and 250 people will carry one of the two flames.

“Each of the 250 torchbearers will have a special story to tell,” said Americas Paralympic Committee president José Luis Campo, who hails from Argentina.

Parapan Am Games organizers invited First Nations communities to the torch ceremony, and they took a central role.

Cliff Maness, a councillor with the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, carried the flame onto Parliament Hill in a small lantern. He said local elders added offerings before the flame was lit.

“The spirits of our forefathers will go with the flame,” Maness said.

The first torch bearer was Peter Schuler of the Six Nations Reserve, located near Toronto.

Among the first dozen runners on Parliament Hill were Ottawa athletes, including Karolina Wisniewska, a para-alpine medal-winner at multiple Paralympics, as well as athletes who will take part in the upcoming Parapan Am Games in Toronto.

Paralympic medallist Chelsea Lariviere finished her leg of the relay on foot even though her athletic success has come while rowing or using a wheelchair to race. She was beaming as she reached the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill.

“It’s a really special moment,” Lariviere said. “What (the flame) means is bringing people together despite their differences.”

Ottawa judo athlete Priscilla Gagne – who has limited vision – took the arm of a pace runner during her leg of the relay.

“I used to do wrestling, but wrestling isn’t in the Games,” Gagne said.

“I tried goalball but that’s not combat. I missed fighting.”

Gagne will take on American, Brazilian and Argentinian opponents on Aug. 12 at the Parapan Am Games site in Whitby, Ont. The Parapan Am Games began in Toronto on Aug. 7, and run through Aug. 15.

More than 1,600 para-athletes from 28 countries will compete in 15 sports, all of which will be Paralympic qualifiers for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The federal government has committed money to get Aboriginal and female workers into the skilled trades.

The announcement was made on the West Lawn at Parliament Hill on July 24

by Ottawa-OrlĂŠans MP Royal Galipeau and Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women. “Skilled trades are amongst the most important and critical of the Canadian economy,â€? said Leitch. “I take pride in travelling this great country and encouraging more men, but in particular more women, to enter into a career of skilled professional trades.â€?

She announced just under $230,000 in funding for a 36month program, run through the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, to increase apprenticeship opportunities for women living in rural or remote parts

of the country.

Sarah Watts-Rynard, executive director at the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, said part of the program will create an online network for employers and women to connect.

She said encouraging women to connect may help battle “the isolation that can occur when you’re the only woman on a skilled trades work site.�

They will also look at some of the best practises in the industry for recruiting and retaining female apprentices. “We’re looking for employers to share their experiences and insights,� Watts-Rynard said. “I think there are many opportunities in these projects to advance the conversation.�

The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum was awarded additional funding, $210,000, for a project to encourage more Aboriginals to join the skilled trades and take on apprenticeships. Galipeau, citing Statistics Canada, said that

Police converged on a shopping plaza at 3300 McCarthy Rd. after a body was discovered late in the morning on Aug. 5.

Police received a call at 10:55 a.m. about the body, which appeared to have been found on a path directly behind the shopping plaza and adjacent to several homes.

Police said later in the day after investigating at the scene that they have determined that the death is not considered suspicious and they would not be releasing any more information in the case.

The walking trail runs from Paul Landry Park on Uplands Drive to the back of the plaza and Twyford Street.

A woman who lives in a house next to the path, and who did not want to give her name, said she was home prior to the first police car arriving at the scene and did not see or hear any commotion.

“It’s scary,” she said. “Police sometimes monitor that area. Once in a while they come and go in the forest, but nothing like this.”

She said the bush in the area used to be thicker, but was trimmed and significantly scaled back this winter, which she thought could potentially be for police to better monitor activity at the site, especially at night.

Capital Pride is set to shake off its financial woes of last year and celebrate.

The gay pride festival, which is marking its 30th anniversary, declared bankruptcy after last year’s event racked up more than $100,000 in debts it could not pay. The festival has since revamped itself with guidance and financial oversight from the Bank Street BIA and the City of Ottawa.

“It looks like we made it,” Tammy Dopson, chairwoman of Capital Pride, said at an event announcing the festival’s new location and parade route on Aug. 8.

Dopson said the new board and organization is not responsible for the debt of the old board and that some of the festival’s old suppliers have returned to support Capital Pride.

“We’re an entirely new or-

ganization,” she told reporters.

The city announced Capital Pride will receive $37,000 for this year’s festival, which is the same amount as in previous years. Mayor Jim Watson said the grant, to be funnelled through the BIA, was necessary, given the non-profit nature of the festival and the importance of supporting the LGBTQ community.

“It was challenging for the whole community and disappointing, but I think we had 28 years of great pride festivals and we had one year that had some economic challenges,” he said.

Watson pointed out the city has helped other festivals in the past, such as the Tulip Festival.

“I think the city would be a poorer place if we didn’t have these kinds of festivals, whether its pride or tulip,” he said.

Watson said the festival also serves as a big tourism draw.

Rather than taking place at City Hall like in years past, the festival’s community fair will be staged in the Bank Street Village this year.

The new parade route will start at the corner of Bank Street and Gladstone Avenue and head west, before turning north onto Kent Street. The parade will then travel up to Laurier Avenue and head east before turning south on Bank Street and ending at the community fair, which will be set up between Somerset Avenue and James Street.

Capital Pride will kick off with a flag raising ceremony at City Hall on Aug. 17. A slew of events is scheduled Alex Robinson/Metroland for numerous locations across Mayor Jim Watson, Somerset Coun. Catherine Mckenney and Tammy Dopson, of Capital downtown and Gatineau all Pride, celebrate the launch of the festival’s 30th year. week and will be capped off by a parade on Aug. 23.

Cold cream was a luxury

G

oodness knows how many times Audrey took her hanky out of the washstand drawer, untied the corner, and counted her money.

There were no ways to earn money back then, and it was only through the generosity of aunts or uncles that we children had any money at all.

Uncle Lou always gave us money when he came to visit, and at Christmastime Aunt Freda would send a one dollar bill which was to be divided between the five of us.

My brothers showed their Bantam chickens at the Renfrew Fair, earning a few pennies, but none of us had what we could call a heavy purse!

But Audrey had been squirreling away her pennies for months, because she was bent on making a huge purchase when she had accumulated enough. Although Mother and Father frowned on wasting money, we could do what we wished with whatever we were able to gather together.

And for months Audrey had

MARY COOK Memories been talking about buying what she considered to be sheer luxury. She saw it when she was at Ritza’s Drug Store one day, and couldn’t get it out of her mind.

She even dragged me into the store one Saturday, even though I was so much younger and couldn’t imagine what was so exciting about what she was about to blow all her money on!

What got her all worked up was a jar of something called Pond’s Cold Cream. It didn’t look all that special to me.

The jar was almost as big as a honey pail, and inside was a pale yellow cream that Audrey was sure was going to do wonders for her skin.

It had been written up in a copy of Mother’s Philadelphia Enquirer, and said it was being sold worldwide. It was guaranteed to make every face “as clean as the driven snow.” My sister had cut out the clipping, folded it, and kept it in her shoe, and every so often she would take it out and look at it.

Well, the day finally came when Audrey had enough money in the corner of her hanky to march into Ritza’s Drug Store and make her purchase. It was a Saturday, Mother’s usual day to go into Renfrew to peddle her eggs, chickens, homemade soap and butter, and Audrey rousted me out of bed early to help her with her weekly chores so that she could go into town too.

Mother may not have been strict with how we spent our few pennies, but she was strict about doing our weekly Saturday morning chores.

Audrey and I headed for the drug store, and went right to the counter where all the cosmetics were stacked in piles. There were boxes of something called Tanjay, and boxes of fancy soaps, and there it was! Several glass jars of Pond’s Cold Cream.

Audrey picked up one of the jars, unscrewed the top and took a long

breath and then passed it under my nose. It smelled like lemons, and I could easily understand how the ad said it would do what it would do.

Now, this was pure luxury.

Never, could I ever remember of anything like that jar coming into our house out in Northcote.

Audrey undid her hanky, and laid out all her money on the counter.

She had exactly enough to make her purchase: 29 cents! And that included the brown paper bag with Ritza’s Drug Store printed in big black letters on the outside.

Audrey put it right up on her half of the washstand we shared in our bedroom, and shaking a finger right under my nose, forbid me to lay a finger on it.

Well, when you’re only sixyears-old, with a curious nature, and an imagination to boot, those orders might as well have been given to our old rooster. I wondered. If it was said to make your face as smooth as the driven snow, would that not mean it would erase your freckles too? I was determined to try it, but I would have to wait for just the right moment. It would never do to dig into it until Audrey had first made her mark in the jar.

I didn’t have to wait long. That

night she lathered it on her face, put a towel on her pillow, and went to bed, convinced she would have a new face by morning.

Sunday, she looked the same to me as she did every day. I decided I would just put a small dab on the end of my nose where my freckles were the thickest, and this I did when I had the bedroom to myself getting dressed for church.

I rubbed it in well, and it soon vanished, but it did absolutely nothing for my freckles. I would like to say I could see a change in Audrey’s face. But for weeks of slathering on the Pond’s Cold Cream, she looked exactly the same to me, and she was 29 cents poorer. I knew then nothing – not even that wonderful smelling jar of cream – was ever going to get rid of my hateful freckles. And I realized there was more truth than poetry in what old Granny Hines would say when she heard anyone complain: “Be happy with what God gave you; it could be a lot worse.”

Wow with frozen rhubarb dessert

Emily LaFleur is a young woman who is Deaf and was looking for work while she studied to become a photojournalist.

Emily tried for a very long time to find work on her own but it was difficult. After completing high school, she contacted the Canadian Hearing Society (CHS).

This delicious dessert is perfect to make and freeze ahead for a large gathering over the summer or a long weekend. The texture of the filling is similar to semifreddo, which is Italian for halffrozen, and contrasts nicely with the crunchy crust. Prepare the crust and rhubarb mixture ahead of time for quick assembly later.

“CHS helped me develop my resume and tailor it to the specific job I wanted,” said Emily. When Emily was going through the hiring process with Swiss Chalet, CHS helped her with the interview process and ensured there was an interpreter.

“As the employment consultant from CHS introduced me to the manager before my interview, I kept telling myself, ‘Be brave, be brave, be brave!’” said Emily. “When Swiss Chalet hired me as a hostess, I was truly terrified. It was scary enough that it was my first job and even scarier because I am Deaf. How would the public respond to me?” Emily said bravery is needed on an ongoing basis, bravery from her and her customers in making efforts to figure out ways to communicate whether being seen clearly for lip-reading, writing back and forth, gesturing or signing. “I am always impressed when a hearing person attempts to express themselves with gestures even if they don’t know American Sign Language,” she said.

Emily said that like many others, she is saving for her future, putting herself through college and learning about the world of work. “I am so grateful to CHS, my trainers, the managers, the business owners and my amazing team of co-workers at Swiss Chalet for their support and for giving me a chance to show I can accomplish the same things as anyone else,” she said. “At Swiss Chalet, I have been given the opportunity to feel like I belong.”

(50 mL) liquid egg whites (preferably room temperature) • 1/2 cup (125 mL) granulated sugar • Red food colouring Crust and topping: • 1 cup (250 mL) whole wheat flour • 1/2 cup (125 mL) walnut pieces • 1/4 cup (50 mL) packed brown sugar • 1 tsp (5 mL) cinnamon • 1/3 cup (75 mL) butter, melted • Mint sprigs (optional)

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS

• 4 cups (1 L) sliced Ontario Rhubarb (about 1-1/2 lb/750g) • 1 cup (250 mL) packed brown sugar • 1 orange • 1 tbsp (15 mL) cornstarch • 2 egg whites or 1/4 cup

In saucepan, bring rhubarb and brown sugar to boil over medium-high heat, stirring. Reduce heat to medium; cook until rhubarb is softened to sauce consistency, 10 to 15 minutes. Meanwhile, grate rind of orange and squeeze orange to yield

1/4 cup (50 mL) juice. Mix together juice, rind and cornstarch until smooth; stir into rhubarb sauce and increase heat to high and boil for 1 to 2 minutes or until thickened slightly. Transfer to bowl, cool to room temperature OR chill in fridge 30 minutes.

Crust and Topping: In food processor, pulse together flour, walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon until crumbly. Add butter and pulse until combined; press 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) crumbs over bottom of 9-inch (23 cm) springform pan.

Place remaining crumbs in baking pan. Bake crust and crumbs in 350°F (180°C) oven for 7 minutes or until crumbs are golden brown: remove crumbs. Bake crust for 8 minutes longer or until golden brown. Remove to rack and let cool to room temperature, 25 to 30 minutes.

For the past 40 years, the Capital (formerly Gloucester) Fair has welcomed spring to the National Capital Region, bringing fun and excitement along with it.

Now in its second year as the 10 day late summer event at the Rideau Carleton Raceway, the Fair promises to have something for everyone with wild and crazy outdoor monster truck shows, western horse and barrel racing shows, Eastern Ontario’s largest midway, three days of senior’s bridge tournaments, a raucous demolition derby, free daily live entertainment, a comedic hypnotist, a daily dog stunt show, Armwrestling championships, an amateur BBQ competition, a Petting Zoo and a huge kids zone among lots of other attractions. It’s is a great way to get out and have one last summer celebration with the whole family.

The Fair’s signature event, the Monster Trucks on a Mission show is not your average extreme action feature. These trucks take full advantage of the outdoor venue to reach speeds and heights and perform tricks that can’t be performed in any indoor arena. With a show on Friday, August 21st, Saturday, August 22nd and Sunday, August 23rd, there’s lots of opportunity to enjoy this spectacular event.

Discount tickets are available on-line (capitalfair.ca) for a limited time and at the door for only $25.00. Special combo packages are available but only on-line.

They offer all day midway rides and admission to the Monster Shows. There are also VIP packages for the best seats in the house, a pit pass and autograph session.

Cars and trucks will be crashing all over the fair, as the Monster Truck Show is complimented by a return of our FREE Demolition Derby on Thursday night. See our derby cars smash and crash, all to the delight of the crowd.

And it won’t just be the car’s strength that will be tested. On Sunday the Ontario Championship arm-wrestling competition will push competitors to the edge.

All of that outdoor fun is sure to build up a healthy appetite and barbeque is the name of the game at the Capital Fair at the D&S Southern Comfort B.B.Q. Restaurant “Smoked to the Bone” barbeque competition. The competition will pit amateur teams against each other for $1,000 in cash and prizes. Think your barbecue talents deserve glory? Why not try your hand? All you need is a BBQ. Chicken and ribs are provide with your admission.

For animal enthusiasts, there are western horse barrel races on Friday and Saturday night and a full Gymkhana show on Sunday. The Kids Zone features the Bird of Prey show where families can meet eagles, owls and hawks up close and personal. See them soar overhead as the conservation team explains the habitat and challenges these species face. There’s also a petting zoo and pony rides.

Also inside the Kids Tent is DooDoo, the world famous clown and his Dance Party.

There’s also the Reptile Rainforest, the Kommunity Stage and the Travelin’ Farmer display where city folk can get in touch with their country cousins.

Kids young and old can enjoy the World’s Finest Midway, which delivers all the best rides from summer´s past including the Cannonball, Music Express, Alien Abduction and Fireball. All-day ride passes are only $18 and include free admission to the Fair.

The Capital Fair also appreciates the community it thrives in, so they give back every year the day before the fair starts with the Hydro Ottawa Special Needs Day. This year we will host over 1,500 special needs children to a private party where legions of Hydro Ottawa volunteers help move children to and from World’s Finest Midway rides and then off to a hotdog and ice cream lunch in the Hydro Ottawa food tent. Entertainment, Karaoke and a Petting Zoo, courtesy of Monalea Petting Zoo, round out what is the best day of the year for many of these children.

Ottawa athletes named to Parapan Am team brier.dodge@metroland.com

A handful of Ottawa athletes were named to Canada’s Parapan Am team when the Canadian Paralympic Committee announced the national team on July 31.

Josh Cassidy, who was born in Ottawa but now resides in Guelph, will compete in wheelchair racing at the Games that started Aug. 7 and continue until Aug. 15 in Toronto. Despite living in Guelph, Cassidy competes with the Ottawa Lions, based out of Mooney’s Bay. He holds the world record for the fastest wheelchair marathon, which he set in Boston in 2012.

Another Lions athlete, Jason Dunkerley, should also perform well at the Games.

Dunkerley, a visually impaired distance runner, is a

five-time Paralympic medalist. His guide, Joshua Karanja, who competed with Dunkerley in the 2012 Paralympics, will also compete with him at the Parapan Am Games.

Boccia athlete Adam Dukovich, who has cerebral palsy and was a bronze medalist at the 2010 world championships, was also named to the team.

Samuel Charron, a 17-yearold who has played with the Gloucester Hornets and Cumberland Cobras soccer clubs, will play in the seven-a-side soccer competition.

Two goalball players from Ottawa – Whitney Bogart and Amy Burk – were named to the team, as was Priscilla Gagné, who is visually impaired, and who will compete in judo.

Gagné won her first World Cup medal this past February. Competing alongside her

is Takahashi Martial Arts athlete Tony Walby, who shares coaches with Gagné.

Walby, who is also visually impaired from a deteriorating genetic condition, won a bronze medal at the 2011 Parapan Am Games. Prior to his Parapan Am Games competition, and before he was considered legally blind, Walby competed on the national team for able-bodied athletes.

Ottawa’s Ian Kent was named to the table tennis team.

Kent was formerly a national table tennis coach for the ablebodied team.

Rounding out the local athletes named to the Games is Patrice Dagenais, a wheelchair rugby player who currently lives in Embrun. The co-captain of Canada’s wheelchair rugby team won a silver medal MATTHEW MURNAGHAN/CANADIAN PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE with Canada at the 2012 Para- Whitney Bogart of Canada’s goalball team takes on team Sweden at the London 2012 lympic Games.

Nepean hosts Little League teams for Canadian national championship Staff

The 2015 Canadian Little League Championships are well underway, having opened at Ken Ross Park in Nepean on Aug. 7.

A game between the East Nepean Eagles and the Quebec team at the park’s Eagles Nest diamond at 3 p.m. on Aug. 13 will be the final round-robin game of the tournament before the semi-finals start. On that day, former Toronto Blue Jay and MLB Hall-of-Fame member Roberto Alomar is sched-

uled to be the keynote speaker at the Champions’ Dinner that will be held at Algonquin College.

The tournament’s semi-final games are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 15, followed by a Challenger baseball game for players with physical and mental disabilities at 6:30 p.m.

The Canadian champions will be crowned after the title game at 1 p.m. on Aug. 16.

A 22-year-old man was arrested and charged with mischief after he climbed up the National War Memorial and ‘fornicated’ with a statue, police said.

Man arrested for ‘fornicating’ with National War Memorial statue A frisky 22-year-old man from Toronto has been arrested after he was caught “fornicating” with a statue on the National War Memorial, police said.

The man was charged with mischief late on the evening of Aug. 2, after bystanders saw him climb up the monument and perform an ob-

scene motion with the statue.

The man was still at the site when police arrived. He was held in custody until he appeared in court the following day.

Sentries have guarded the memorial during the day since 2006, when a man was caught urinating on the monument.
