If you’re leaving on vacation, make sure you’re not also leaving your house vul-

She said break and enters have been on the rise in rural south villages since February, particularly in Osgoode, Greely and Edwards. It’s likely because people are leaving on vacation, possibly for an extended time, which can tip off a potential burglar if steps aren’t taken to make the house look lived in, she said.

According to the police crime mapping tool, there have been three break and enters in the outskirts of Osgoode village, including two on River Road on March 13 and 17 and an earlier incident on Springhill Road in February.

Greely has had five break and enters over the course of February and March, including calls to D’Arcy Street on March 20 and to Tintern Drive on March 23.

Edwards has had six break and enters between Feb. 11 and March 23, with the last called in on March 7.

The break-ins are mostly happening in the daytime, “which is kind of nervy,” Lemieux said. She said the best way to protect your home while one vacation is to make sure it looks lived in. That includes having someone shovel your driveway, putting your lights on a timer to click on at night, and getting a neighbour to put garbage out for you each week.

Clapp seniors’ home rezoning heads to ARAC Emma Jackson

An application to rezone two Clapp Lane properties in Dickinson Square to make way for a seniors’ home met little resistance at a public information meeting on March 23.

Developer Joe Princiotta owns 1129 and 1125 Clapp Lane in Manotick, and he plans to build a 45-unit independent living centre across the two properties, which are kitty-corner to Watson’s Mill and several other heritage buildings.

While 1125 was rezoned for use as a senior’s residence (among other things) as part of a city-initiated bid to sell five properties in Manotick’s historic square in 2012, the adjacent property at 1129 needs to be brought up to the same standards so that “one zone applies to the entirety of the site,” according to the submitted planning rationale.

The tower has now been worked into one of the building’s corner dormers so it doesn’t stand out quite so much, Princiotta said.

That satisfies a commercial space requirement from the city, while adding more public washrooms to the square.

“If (visitors) are in Dickinson Square or they’re going to the farmer’s market, there is a washroom there they can use,” Princiotta said.

The project will require demolition of the Clapp House, which is not a designated heritage property, and the site’s substantial grove of trees, including a number of endangered butternut.

“It breaks my heart to do it,” Princiotta said. But a grove of between 50 and 100 new butternuts will be planted somewhere else in the region to make up for the losses, in keeping with provincial rules, he said.

The high-end facility will offer independent apartments for seniors who don’t yet need the medical and nutritional care offered at its sister location on Bridge Street.

But when they do get to that point, they can just move across the road, Princiotta said. “It’s successful succession planning for the seniors themselves,” he said.

He added the facility’s name will likely be something along the lines of ‘Orchard View in Dickinson Square.’

“Moving target.”

“Struggle.”

“Chaos.”

“Crisis.”

Those were just some of the telling descriptions city staff had for the province’s new social assistance system at an update to the community and protective services committee on March 23 – a system that has caused nothing but headaches and extra costs for the city since it was imposed by the province last fall.

The new software management system, known as SAMS, was rolled out across Ontario on Nov. 12, and since then issuing cheques for Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support program has become exponentially difficult for the approximately 600 area social workers who don’t have enough training or the manpower to address the problems that have cropped up.

“What it was intended to do was to make applying for social assistance easier ... to make things smoother, faster, more efficient,” said Aaron Burry, the city’s social services general manager. “That’s certainly not what we’ve seen to date.”

“It’s not a problem of our making, it’s a problem that has landed on our table and one that we need to deal with.”

LITANY OF ISSUES

The province initially announced the new electronic welfare management software in 2010, and it was supposed to hit Ontario cities in the spring of 2013.

That rollout was delayed until November 2014, but despite the extra time Burry said staff still wasn’t adequately trained.

In Ottawa, social workers completed most of their SAMS training online with an outdated version of the software, and there was no transition time to run the old and new systems together.

When the province flipped the switch on Nov. 12, staff was basically starting from scratch, Burry said.

The technical bugs were clear right away. Some files from the old database just didn’t transfer properly, but it was impossible to know what files would trigger a problem, Burry said.

That’s still ongoing, leaving Ottawa staff with about five unresolved files each week. While that’s down from 12 at the start of the SAMS era, it’s still a struggle. “We’ve never had a 100 per cent successful week,” he said.

The city asked to the province to send software

experts to help staff on the ground, but so far that hasn’t happened.

Compounding the problem is the fact that the province is trying to fix the software on the fly. Just when staff gets familiar with the new program, a series of upgrades will come in over the weekend, Burry said.

Instead, the number of client calls to the city’s four social assistance offices has jumped an average of 27 per cent (and 250 per cent on pay days), walk-ins have tripled and wait times to get issues resolved have ballooned from minutes to hours and sometimes even days, Burry said. It can take three times longer just to do a routine task like change an address.

A small percentage of cheques have been leaving the office with errors, so staff has had to put in time-consuming stopgaps to make sure the system isn’t churning out bogus payments.

The client services offices, once humming centres of productivity, are now dens of chaos as staff try to cope with the backlog.

“When you get off the elevator now there is racket everywhere,” Burry told the committee. “That tells me there are multiple things not working.”

It is currently costing the city about $35,000 extra every week in added staffing costs to fill vacancies, bump part-timers to full time and pay some overtime. Burry said the worst-case estimate is an extra $4 million in implementation costs over the next two years.

While the province has paid about $221,000 of that back already and plans to send the same amount again this quarter, Burry said Ottawa has not received any commitment from the province that the city will be fully reimbursed for its trouble.

Ottawa police to purchase 100 more Tasers Emma Jackson

Ottawa’s police force has been given the green light to buy another

100 Tasers for its front-line officers at a cost of nearly $196,000.

The new Tasers will be deployed by the end of 2015, bringing the number of conducted energy weap-

ons available on the road to a maximum of 39, up from 15.

It’s a tiny number for one of the largest municipal police forces in Canada, a board report said, and a 2013 internal survey found that 59 per cent of the force’s members had attended a call where a Taser was necessary but wasn’t available.

The police developed a two-year “practical deployment plan” in April 2014 to increase the number of Tasers available to its force after the provincial ministry of community safety and correctional services allowed for expanded use of the weapons in 2013.

The new Tasers were included in the 2015 budget, but since it was a sole-source purchase of more than $100,000 it needed Ottawa Police Services board approval, which it received March 23. It was largely a formality, though, since MD Charlton Co. is the only authorized distributor of Tasers in the province.

Ottawa has settled on the X2 model, one of two approved for Ontario police forces last fall.

According to the police board, the X2 is “more technologically advanced and consequently improves

public and officer safety.”

The conducted energy weapon has a dual laser sighting system to show officers exactly where each probe will make contact. It also has two cartridges, so it can deploy twice in a row.

The Ottawa force has had access to Tasers since 2000, when it participated in provincial field trials.

In 2002, members of tactical and hostage-containment teams across Ontario were authorized to carry the weapons, and in 2004 that was expanded to include front-line supervisors.

Last April, Ottawa approved a change in its use of force policy to include members of perimeter control teams and first-class constables who are either coach officers or who are working in front-line areas.

A 2013 report showed Tasers are deployed in Ottawa on average about 19 times a year, with the highest being 25 times in 2013.

The report said no serious injuries had been reported because of an officer using the weapon.

Along with the purchase, the force is continuing to deliver de-escalation training to all of its officers, the report said.

Conservatives to shell out childcare benefits a few months before election alex.robinson@metroland.com

The federal government was set to introduce legislation that will retroactively give parents increased childcare benefits in July, a few months before the upcoming federal election.

Nepean-Carleton MP Pierre Poilievre, the minister of employment and social development, announced the legislation at a daycare centre in Sandy Hill on March 25.

“The benefit of these increases is that it goes to every single family with kids, regardless of income or the choice the family makes for

childcare – they will have more money in their pocket,” he said.

The new benefits will come in the form or non-refundable tax credits and will increase the money given to parents of children five years old and younger from $1,200 per child every year to $2,000. Families with children aged six to 17 did not receive the childcare benefit previously, but will now get $670 per child.

“It’s important we help 100 per cent of families in the country, and that’s exactly what this change will do,” Poilievre said.

vide retroactive benefits from January 1, 2015. Parents can expect to receive $420 for that period for every child over six and $520 for children aged five and younger, Poilievre said.

Checks for the benefits will start arriving in parents’ mailboxes July 20 in the run up to the next election, which is expected in October.

In response to a question about whether the timing of the benefits could be seen as playing politics, Poilievre said, “Not at all. I resent that question very much.”

“It does take some time to set up the system and to add the millions of families who weren’t eligible before, but will now be eligible,” he said.

The Conservatives have announced a number of tax cuts and credits in the run up to the election, including a controversial income-splitting plan that will allow families with a stay-at-home or lower income earning partner to split the income of the higher earner to lower their taxes.

The universal childcare

benefit is taxable, but Poilievre said it will still put more money directly into the pockets of parents.

“It’s much like getting a raise at work. If you got a raise at work of $2,000 a year, then obviously there are tax implications. However, you’re better off,” he said. “This benefit will help 100 per cent of families with kids regardless of income or the childcare they choose.”

NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair has announced his party would institute an affordable childcare program if elected to government.

The Liberals have advocated for a national childcare program for years and tried to institute one under former prime minister Paul Martin in 2005, before the Conservatives came to power and scrapped it.

is taking part in the Big Library Read until March 31.

The international book club of sorts provides all members of the library with unlimited access to a certain title.

Library cardholders now have access to an autobiography e-book – Shakespeare Saved My Life: Ten Years in Solitary with a Bard – without any waitlists or holds.

The story is about prison volunteer Laura Bates as she

teaches about Shakespeare inside a supermax prison facility, specifically in solitary confinement.

Library board chairman and Beacon Hill-Cyrville Coun. Tim Tierney wants to emphasize the library’s online catalogue.

“This initiative is another great opportunity for OPL to highlight its virtual branch,” said Tierney.

“The cost of an e-book for libraries is often up to three times

more than the consumer price, resulting in fewer copies for library readers. Initiatives like Big Library Read are a great opportunity for OPL to continue to raise awareness about the improvements that are needed when it comes to making e-content available.”

Shakespeare Saved My Life will be available for borrowing until March 31. After that the ebook will automatically expire from e-readers.

got to start all over again, I’ve got to relearn things,’” Burry said. Clients have suffered for it as well, he said. Some people have to come to the office three or four times in a month to resolve issues, and they’re anxious to make sure their cheques are issued correctly and on time.

There’s been a rise in angry outbursts, Burry said, and a decline in the amount of time staff can spend helping clients get back on their feet.

“Much of the other work that we’re required and want to do we’re not able to do, and that’s specifically helping to steer cli-

“The promise was more face time with clients, not less.”

He said a number of major fixes are scheduled for the end of the month. He promised to update the committee again in April.

Ontario finances still adrift

I

t’s not difficult to find evidence the Ontario government has lost its way. Almost every day they send out reminders, in the form of press releases, to whoever is interested of the many ways in which they’re squandering the future of the province.

For example, in the spirit of disclosure and public accountability they sent out information on the annual “sunshine list,� detailing the members of the public sector who earn more than $100,000 per year. In 2014, the number of people on that list surpassed 100,000.

That’s not an insignificant number of people. In fact, there are so many people in Ontario earning six figures on the public payroll that, at a minimum, their salaries will make up at least $10 billion of the province’s $130 billion 2014-15 fiscal plans. As most people on the sunshine list make more than $100,000, the actual portion of Ontario’s annual expenditures likely surpasses 10 per cent of the total.

And that’s the disclosure part. While the top earners in the provincial public sector count their

riches, school boards and hospitals, including those here in Ottawa, are trimming their front-line staff in an effort to keep their budgets in balance as money from the province is frozen or clawed back.

The Ottawa Hospital, CHEO, the public school board have announced in the last couple weeks that they’ll have to reduce the number of nurses and learning support staff in order to keep their books in the black. Those are the sorts of cuts that residents will notice.

Yet these aren’t called job cuts, as these decisions are left to those at the local level, yet they do sound awfully similar to the sort that Kathleen Wynne denounced during her re-election campaign last year.

She pledged to get Ontario’s economy back on track without tearing apart the public services residents depend on.

So far, all we’ve seen is evidence of profligate spending and harmful job cuts. After more than half a decade of sour economic times, Ontario’s leadership is no closer to helping us find our way out of the woods.

t seems like some kind of playoff fever thing hits our town every year.

Playoff fever, as we have learned, doesn’t always mean Ottawa makes the National Hockey League playoffs, but it is exciting and it helps pass the last weeks of a very long and hard winter. And actually, it’s not really playoff fever. Actual playoff fever begins when the playoffs begin.

What we have is making-the-playoffs fever, a different thing entirely.

Some might suggest that, next year, the Senators could try winning more games earlier in the season, so that a playoff spot could be guaranteed and the good people of this city could be spared the nerve-wracking ordeal of a late-season playoff run.

True, having a winning season from beginning to end is the traditional way of making the playoffs, but that can be boring. Far better to keep the fans on the edge of their seats, keep them checking the radio or the TV when they’re supposed to be entertaining guests, keep them listening to the game online when they’re supposed to be going out to sample the nightlife in Florida.

Fans of teams that do it the traditional way, in places like Chicago and Detroit, are probably pretty satisfied with their sports life. should try this. In fact, the Senators themselves were quite traditional until last year, making the playoffs consistently for more than a decade.

Then, last season, they rediscovered the extra dose of excitement they could provide for their fans by waiting until the last minute to qualify.

The team had done that in 1997, qualifying for the playoffs on the last day of the regular season.

Unfortunately, in the case of last season there was a miscalculation.

The team was in the race for what sportswriters like to call “a coveted post-season spot� until the last week of the season. Then oops.

Still, everyone could see what fun it was. Hence, the position we find ourselves in now as Senators fans, old and new. For there are many new ones. Winning a string of games with no veterans and a minor-league goalie will do that.

The former head of Quartier Vanier is set to serve her community in a different way.

Suzanne Valiquet was selected to be the newest member of the Ottawa Police Services Board recently.

She stepped down as executive director of Quartier Vanier at the end of 2014,

after spending seven years in the position.

Valiquet oversaw large scale beautification efforts that sought to make Vanier a more colourful and welcoming neighbourhood.

She also oversaw merchants’ association programs, and co-ordinated recruitment strategy, safety and marketing programs for the BIA. During her time at Quarti-

The Ottawa Hospital is set to slash 35 full time positions as part of cost-cutting measures to deal with a potential $26 million budget hole in 2015-16.

Stagnant provincial funding and rising costs have led to budget cuts at the hospital over the last three years, said Cameron Love, the hospital’s chief operating officer.

“Unfortunately the reduction in spending means we need to reduce our staffing levels and that’s because the salaries and benefits are the single biggest expense of our organization, accounting for up to two-thirds of our budget,” he said after notices were sent out on March 24.

We had the opportunity to listen to City Staff describe the ongoing issues created by this new Provincial system. In the evening I was invited to a very informal gathering of some business owners in Metcalfe to discuss ways to promote local business in our community.

There was great initial discussion and plans are being put in place to continue the conversations started at this meeting.

Love said the hospital has still been able to improve the quality of its service over the last three years, despite having to streamline some programs, but that if the hospital continues to have to make cuts it would be hard to sustain the quality of care.

“This is not something you can continue on with for 15 years with the same mechanism,” he said.

The elimination of the 35 full time positions makes up part of $14 million in savings the hospital has already planned for. The hospital will announce further measures in the coming months to meet the additional $12 million, Love said.

The eliminated positions will include nursing and administrative jobs at the hospital, which

has 11,000 employees. The hospital will only be dropping the equivalent of 22 full time employees, as 13 of the positions are already vacant.

Many hospitals across Ontario have had implement budget cuts over the last three years, as the provincial government has frozen the level of base funding.

An aging population, inflation and general population growth have driven hospital costs up, as they try to do more with less.

CHEO recently announced it was eliminating more than 40 positions to deal with its own $6.7 million shortfall.

Police close investigation into River Road cyclist’s death No charges will be laid: police Staff

No charges will be laid by police against the driver of a garbage truck that struck and killed an Ottawa woman as she rode her bike in the Ride the Rideau charity last summer.

The police collision investigations unit announced March 25 it has closed an investigation into the death of Laurie Strano, 40.

The tragedy cut short the fifth-annual Ride the Rideau, organized by the Ottawa Hospital Foundation in support of cancer research.

Last year’s event drew more than 900 participants, many of whom had to be bused back to the EY Centre, where the event began, as police conducted their investigation.

The driver of the BFI garbage truck remained at the scene and co-operated with investigators, police said

Proceeds from the 21st-annual Telfer Scholarship Golf Tournament, which will take place on Sept. 18, at the Meadows Golf and Country Club, will go to the Laurie Strano Memorial Master’s in Health Administration Scholarship.

“Laurie successfully completed the MHA program at the University of Ottawa and her education launched a career in health care that saw her take on progressive leadership and management roles at The Ottawa Hospital and The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Care Centre,” the University of Ottawa said on its website.

“Laurie was an active member of the MHA Alumni Association and an integral member of the organizing committee of the recent 50th anniversary gala celebration of the Telfer MHA Program.”

Get corporate and union money out of municipal politics: Nussbaum Alex Robinson

Tobi Nussbaum has launched an effort to get corporate and union money out of municipal politics.

The Rideau-Rockcliffe councillor is looking to make good on a campaign promise to get rid of corporate and union campaign contributions by introducing a motion at city council that could lead to banning the practice.

“If you’re a member of a union or the owner of a corporation, you have two opportunities to donate and that’s a right that’s not afforded to other citizens,” he said.

“So it really is an issue of equity and fairness and making sure we are treating people the same.”

The Municipal Elections Act prohibits individuals from donate more than $750 to a single candidate or $5,000 in total.

Members of unions or corporate executives get an added opportunity to donate through those organizations.

The rookie councillor made the issue central to his campaign and refused to accept any money from corporate donors or unions.

Nussbaum’s motion will ask the Ontario Ministry of

Municipal Affairs and Housing to make an amendment the Municipal Elections Act allowing the city to pass a bylaw banning corporate and union contributions.

“All this motion is doing is seeking to have legislation amended so that council has the power to enact such a bylaw,” Nussbaum said.

“This motion is also about local control, local accountability – making sure that here in the city we’re the masters of our own destiny in terms of determining our campaign rules.”

Ottawa would not be the first to ban such donations as Toronto successfully petitioned the province to do the same thing in 2009.

Opponents of the changes have said the business community has the right to participate in the electoral process as much as individuals.

“It is important to remember that the business community are the same people that built the homes we live in, the offices we work in and the hotels we stay in when we travel,” said Orléans Coun. Bob Monette, who said his campaign received about half of its donations from corporate coffers in the past election.

“So why would they not be able to participate?”

Mayor Jim Watson also supports the status quo.

Gloucester-South Nepean Coun. Michael Qaqish, who accepted corporate donations during the recent election, supports Nussbaum’s motion.

“I see it as another step in the direction of a cleaner municipal government and more transparency and accountability,” he said.

He views the potential ban as an extension of current reforms brought into effect in the previous term of council, including the creation of the integrity commissioner’s position and the gift registry, which councillors use to disclose any gifts they accept.

Currently, city councillors are not permitted to accept gifts from a developer or corporation that has an active lobbying file with the city.

“If we can’t accept (gifts) during non-campaigns in the four years, why is it that we can accept cheques from them (during the campaign) when chances are they have active files with the city or have lobbying efforts with the city?”

Qaqish said.

The motion is set to come up before city council for a vote on April 15.

Mother, instead of sitting at the end of the old pine table in front of her diaries as usual, was that night was gathering up mitts, wool hats, and ordering us, the five of us, to put our long underwear in the dirty clothes, because it wasn’t likely we would be wearing it again the next day.

Coming from the Northcote school that day, we had to carry our coats as the sun beat down on us, and the smell of spring was in the air. Just a few days before, it was cold and a fierce wind cut across the TwentyAcre Field, and there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that winter was still around.

But now, so soon after, the weather changed, and we could see that much of the snow had gone from the fields, and the Northcote Side Road was bare.

It was no wonder Mother said spring was in the air, and it was time to get rid of the heavy clothes and that included the long underwear we had been wearing since the first bite of winter in the fall.

There wasn’t one of us who wasn’t thrilled to be rid of the terrible long johns. After months of weekly washings, they had lost their softness, the ankles were stretched beyond repair, and the elastic around the waist hung limp.

We were more than happy

That night, Mother was gathering up the mitts, scarves and hats and piling everything on a chair near the back door.

It wasn’t Monday, so there would be no washing. Everything would have to wait for the laundry tub until after the weekend.

I could see Father shaking his head from his rocking chair by the Findlay Oval. Finally, he couldn’t keep quiet any longer.

“I’m telling you Mabel, there’s plenty winter out there yet. Everyone will be back in that long underwear, you can bet on it.”

Mother stopped gathering up the mitts, hats and scarves.

“Now, Albert, where were you all day? I’m telling you we’ve seen the last of the snow. Sure, it’s like May out there today.”

Father lifted the lid off the Findlay Oval and slapped his pipe into the firebox, emptying it and getting ready for another load of pipe tobacco.

He took his time sitting back down in the rocking chair.

And then he went on to explain to Mother once again all the signs that pointed to a long winter and that it wasn’t

over yet, and it mattered not how warm it was that day, or if all the snow had gone off the Northcote Side Road.

He explained a sure sign was how deep the early snow was. “That’s a sure sign. If the deer can reach the branches of the trees, you can count on a long winter.”

He relit his pipe. “And remember when we butchered and the pig liver ‘melt’ showed those little lumps? Well, that told me what we were in for.”

Mother just shook her head, and once again told Father that those “old wives tales” as she called them, held no water with her.

The next morning, I could hear Father in the kitchen lighting the fire as he did every morning. And the bedroom had chilled off overnight, as I ran to jump into my clothes for school, so glad to be rid of the long underwear.

But it seemed awfully bright out the bedroom window and it wasn’t an early morning sun either.

I went to the window and lo and behold, the snow was coming down in buckets. And it looked like it had snowed all night.

CHEO recognizes leaders in childrens health Brier Dodge

Organizations from all over Eastern Ontario were recognized for keeping kids healthy in a wide variety of ways by CHEO on March 25.

The CHEO Healthy Kids Awards were held at Funhaven, and hosted by CHEO’s president and CEO Alex Munter.

“These are the Oscars of child health,” he said, adding that there were close to 100 nominations submitted for the five awards.

Coun. Jody Mitic helped present the awards on behalf of the city, and said it was important for children to have good role models growing up who have healthy habits.

“All kids have people they should look up to, and I know I did as a kid,” he said. “Children need role models they can aspire to be like. We want our kids to grow up strong and healthy so they can lead long, meaningful lives.”

The Youth for Youth award recognized Carleton University Sign Student Society, who have worked to bridge the gap between American Sign Language users and the rest of the community after the Ottawa Deaf Centre closed two years ago.

The award was accepted by the society’s president, David MacMillian, who said they hope to work with CHEO patients and help CHEO promote sign language rights.

The entire awards ceremony was translated into American Sign Language by an interpreter who stood near the stage.

The Community Champion Award was given to North Gower’s Helen Meinzinger, who created Kaiden’s Care Kids to assist families who have a newborn diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis.

Her own son, Kaiden, was born in 2009 with Cystic Fibrosis.

She won a $35,000 grant to help fund a national pilot

project, which lead to the kits official adoption by Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

“I’m a part of the RCMP - I’m a bit of a fighter and I don’t take things sitting down,” Meinzinger said. “This year, every family in Canada with a newborn diagnosed with CF will receive a pack.”

The Community Program Award went to the Osgoode Youth Association, and was presented to Nicole McKerracher.

The youth centre supports rural youth, and has over 700 participants.

It is mostly volunteer run, with only four part-time staff, and 120 volunteers, who McKerracher thanked in her speech.

Without OYA, she said youth “would not otherwise have the opportunity to be engaged in the programming we provide in the critical after school hours.”

Starting this year, all registered soccer players aged 14 and under in the region will get free seasons tickets to Ottawa Fury FC home games.

The program expects to give thousands of young players free admission to the team’s 16 home games at TD Place this summer.

“What better environment for a young player to learn the game, than watching professionals playing live?” club president John Pugh said at a fan fest event on March 21 celebrating the start of the upcoming season.

Eight local clubs have already signed up for the program and the Fury hopes every team that has a youth program in the Ottawa-Gatineau area will join before the season’s first game.

“I can’t see why we wouldn’t get every single club in Ottawa-Gatineau to sign up in the fanatics program,” Pugh said.

The clubs that have already signed up include the Gloucester Hornets, Nepean Hotspurs, Association de Soccer de Hull, Capital United and Rockland United.

e got the phone call we had been waiting for, Wednesday morning. I woke the Farmer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You do know you sold our horse last night, right?â&#x20AC;?

We had been in the midst of St. Patrickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day festivities at an Irish pub when he made the sale over the phone.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like getting a tattoo.

Sometimes you regret it the next morning. But no, he said, he was of sound mind when he made the deal.

And Roy Sherrer was on his way from Spencerville to pick her up.

I went outside to break the news to Misty. She was standing at the hay feeder with the cows. Over the last few days she had given up trying to

the cattle truck, the sound of which tends to get the animals whipped into a frenzy.

They know it means someone is either coming or going, every time they hear it. I tried to get Misty to follow me to the stable but she stayed locked to her spot, her ears nervously twitching, eyes watching the trailer as it backed into position.

A bowl of sweetfeed worked to lure her into the stable. I held her harness and stood just to the side of the deep freezer, in case she decided to freak out and bolt either forward or back through the stable. She did neither.

All of the doors and gates worked quietly on the trailer.

Maybe because Roy works with horses, he knows that spooking them will only make his job more difficult.

When he snapped a lead on Misty and pulled her toward the trailer, she followed obediently. Then her big dinner plate hooves hit the patch of ice at the door of the stable, and she lost her footing for a

moment.

She steadied herself and froze to the spot, afraid to move.

Roy stepped down from the trailer, grabbed hold of the tuft of hair at the back of her front leg and pulled until she buckled and allowed him to place it up on the trailer.

She gave the wood floor a good tap as if to test its stability, then she followed him up into her chariot. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve already got her trained more than we ever did,â&#x20AC;? the Farmer said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oh, I know Misty,â&#x20AC;? Roy answered.

Roy Sherrer used to trim Mistyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hooves when she was a young horse on Ron Cookeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s farm.

She has also been to Shermount Farms before, for a few weeks a year ago when we tried to breed her to a Belgian stud.

She might meet him again someday soon, or maybe they will try matching her up with someone else for one more go at breeding before she gets

too old.

She is twelve now. She will probably live to about twenty-five.

While the men stood talking, I climbed up into the horse trailer and whispered to Misty. She turned slightly so she could see me.

Then she looked back out the window, at her pasture.

I wondered what she was thinking, as I told her she was a good girl and we loved her very much and wanted her to be happy.

Then I realized she was probably letting it all sink in, that this was goodbye.

She was looking out over the fields she had thundered over for the past six summers, with her sister Ashley, Donkey, and Gracie the sheep.

I had a good cry, then, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m tearing up again as I write this.

Apple maple walnut slow cooker bread pudding This yummy bread pudding uses maple syrup as the sole sweetener. Preparation time: 20 minutes. Slow-cooking time: four hours. Serves eight.

Ingredients

Apple Topping • 2 L (8 cups) slightly dry bread cubes • 750 ml (3 cups) chopped peeled apples • 125 ml (1/2 cup) dried cranberries or raisins • 4 eggs • 750 ml (3 cups) part-skimmed milk • 300 ml (1-1/4 cups) maple syrup • 175 ml (3/4 cup) chopped walnuts or pecans

Preparation

Place the bread cubes in a slow cooker. Mix in the apples and cranberries.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk and 175 ml (3/4 cup) of maple syrup, and pour over bread cubes, making sure the bread is moistened.

Cook on low for about four hours or until it’s set in the centre, sprinkling the walnuts over top in the last 30 minutes.

To serve, spoon the pudding into bowls, and drizzle each with 15 ml (one tablespoon) of maple syrup.

“Before I think I would have been really nervous to do the talks, but it’s actually helped me with that a lot,” said Jessica Pope, 11, who volunteered to present the group’s venture to the school’s parent council, which ultimately donated $750. “And it ended up being really fun.”

“I was like the shy guy, too,” said Illyas Charania, 11, who has been making phone calls over the course of the project, some of which didn’t pan out.

“But it’s really working out for me and I’ve learned that you shouldn’t be afraid of doing it,” he said.

For many kids, the best part of the entrepreneurial project they launched in February has been “just knowing we are helping these kids,” said Claire Viitaniemi, 11.

Through their entrepreneurial fundraising venture, called Be The Change – One Brick at a Time, the kids have worked tirelessly designing their campaign and reaching out to their own family members and businesses in the community, such as in Riverside South and Manotick.

They have also shared their message with other Steve MacLean students and have been impressed by the generosity shown by even the youngest children.

Elsa Faisal, 11, presented their cause to a kindergarten class and one inspired child brought in the contents of his piggy bank.

“I thought that was so cute because he’s so sincere about it and he wanted to help so much,” she said, adding that she believes it’s important for school-age children to learn about some of the hardships

people are facing around the world.

“We’re only (11 and) 12 making a difference and if they start earlier they can make an even bigger impact,” said Emma Shimizu, 12. “(Our teacher) thinks that we shouldn’t be living under a rock and that we should know what’s going on in the world,” Elsa added. “And I am totally OK with that because I feel like I don’t want to live in a place where everything for me is rainbows and daisies.”

Though they are nearing the $14,000 mark, there is potential for them to amass $20,000 before the cheque is presented to Solidarité Haiti on April 23, well above their initial $12,000 goal to pay for a new classroom.

The Grade 6 students didn’t have a nickel to their name when they first picked up the phone and called local businesses for donations. The experience was, in a word, discouraging.

But with each call, the Steve MacLean Public School students fine-tuned their approach, shored up their confidence and kept trying until they were soon rewarded with more ‘yeses’ than ‘nos.’

At just 11 and 12 years of age, two classes of 56 students at the school have so far amassed almost $14,000 for Solidarité Haiti towards their $15,000 goal to pay for the construction of a computerequipped classroom at Notre Dame de Fond Jean-Noël, a school-in-need in Haiti.

“When we first started this project – we were like, ‘Whoa, how are we going to get all of that money?’” recalled Fiona Bousada, 11. “Once we started going, we were like, ‘Oh, we got this. We’re strong enough to do this and we want to raise money for Haiti.’”

“I think everyone gained a little more confidence with this project – that you can achieve your goals,” added Anya Kylas, 11.

“I am very proud of them,” said Marc Tremblay, a Grade 6 French immersion teacher who has been guiding the students through the venture along with Grade 6 teacher Natalie Martyn.

The kids also collected funds last month from residents at the nearby Metro and Moncion’s Your Independent Grocer, and raised almost $600 by hosting a Lego candy brick sale at the school in early February.

They’ve also received support from BMO, and mentorship from Charles Goodfellow from Goodfellow Cleaners in Riverside South. And until April 15 M&M Meat Shops at 990 Main St. in Manotick, a portion of the sales of select items will go to the fundraiser.

“It’s nothing like a normal class. It’s anything but what you would normally teach,” Tremblay said.

He has watched the students rise to the challenge and overcome obstacles to realize their goals, similar to his Grade 6 students four years ago who generated $12,500 for another charity.

In Tremblay’s eyes, the students have learned invaluable lessons he hopes will stay with them for years to come, including leadership, problem solving, communication, perseverance and teamwork.

“We’re slowly getting along and now we’re here and we’re going sky high,” said Shailen Raval, 11.

Businessman, police officer looking to take up torch from departed Baird Megan DeLaire

Two candidates have announced their intention to seek the Conservative nomination in the Ottawa WestNepean riding.

Businessman Scott Singer and Ottawa police officer Abdul Abdi are now vying for the chance to take former MP John Baird’s place.

The party will name their candidate for a future election on April 13 during a nomination meeting at Centrepointe Theatre.

According to his website, Singer was born and raised in Montreal, and moved to Ottawa with his wife in 1991. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Mc-

Gill University and is the co-owner of Nate’s Delicatessen on Merivale Road Abdi’s website states that since moving to Canada from his native Somalia as a teenager, he worked for 11 years as a law enforcement officer.

According to his website, he is a member of the United Way Ottawa’s board of directors.

The announcement follows Baird’s resignation from Parliament on March 16. Baird, who most recently served as minister of foreign affairs, stepped down after nine years and 20 years of involvement in politics.

The 2015 federal election is scheduled to take place on Oct. 19.
