News – Christmas came early on Dec. 17 when plans for the Dickinson Square development were finally revealed – and residents liked what they saw. Three of the five properties put up for sale this summer met the city’s minimum bid requirements, leaving Dickinson House and the Carriage Shed in the city’s hands. Proving the rumours true, local developer Joe Princiotta won the bid to develop 1125 Clapp Ln., on which he plans to build a 32-unit independent living facility for seniors. The Orchardview Living Centre owner will also purchase the Ayres building across the square at 1128 Mill St., which is currently used by Rural Ottawa South Support

Services (ROSSS). The nonprofit agency will stay there for at least 18 months. The third property went to Orleans businesswoman Lorna Challis, who will develop the vacant Weaver House at 1131 Mill St. into a year-round Christmas store and gift shop. She currently owns a similar store called Christmas Presence in Place D’Orleans mall. The meeting was a success, according to RideauGoulbourn Coun. Scott Moffatt, who led the session in the Manotick arena. Moffatt chairs the Manotick Mill Quarter Community Development Corporation, a subsidiary of the city tasked with selling or leasing the five Manotick properties purchased in 2007. At the time of the purchase, city council stipulated that the $2.15 million spent acquiring the properties from the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority had to be regained through sale or lease, and created the MMQCDC to make it happen. For the past two years, the board has been consulting with residents, community groups and business leaders to determine what the village wants to see in Dickinson Square, the universally accepted heart of Manotick. The board created a number of requirements for potential buyers, including bid minimums on each building, experience in heritage property management, tourist operations and/or adaptive reuse, and compliance with a list of design guidelines that ensures any new buildings or extensions complement the square.
