Alta Vista residents can now add the title of “snow spy” to their resumes.

A Snow Mole program, which launched last February in communities to the northeast, lets Alta Vista residents volunteer as winter watchers.

Alta Vista snow spies can report on winter street trouble-spots in neighbourhoods home to strollerwielding parents, people with mobility issues and seniors, among others.

Their reports could lead to better snow clearing, help prevent falls, encourage more walking and counteract isolation.

“For us it’s two-fold: making sure that there is consistency for those main thoroughfares where the bus stops are cleared,” said Clinton Cowan, president of the Alta Vista Community Association.

“But also for us that there is quality clearing and grit put down proactively on all of the side streets.”

The Snow Mole initiative is he brainchild of AgeFriendly Ottawa, a committee with the Council on Aging Ottawa, a non-profit organization funded in part by the city.

An eight-year-old Riverside South girl has been so inspired by her homework that she is planning to do more of it even after school

Abigail Grant-Waddell, who is in teacher Tracy Brouse’s Grade 3 English class at Steve MacLean Public School, spent the better part of a week last month collecting items and cash for a local dog

erment because she couldn’t believe how much she could do in a week,” Grant-Waddell said, adding that the animal rescue was also impressed by how much Abigail was able to generate in such a short time frame.

When it’s time for each student to take on a kindness project, they bring home a ‘Nobody doll,” a plain denim plush doll that has no face. At the end of each week-long project, the student attaches a memento from their initiative.

Abigail made a paper cut out of a dog with a pipe cleaner leash for the doll.

“I thought that would give Nobody a responsibility,” said Abigail, who is a dog lover.

“Of course, we’re now starting to talk about getting a dog,” her mom noted with a laugh.

By the end of the school year, the goal is to transform the Nobody doll into a somebody with the souvenirs, as part of the character education project.

“The main idea is to teach Nobody to be a somebody through these acts of kindness,” Brouse said in a previous interview.

Abigail is now planning to repeat her fundraiser this summer, just after Canada Day, given the positive experience she had and the lessons she gleaned.

“I learned that dogs really need our help and that people shouldn’t abandon all of these pets that they have,” she said. “I felt really generous about donating all of that money and bedding.”

After her mother, Trista GrantWaddell, put out a call for support on the Riverside South Community Association’s Facebook page, the community rallied behind the young girl and the animal rescue.

“It was unbelievable,” GrantWaddell said. “This is a community that is full of kids and pets and pet owners.”

Abigail and her parents then made the rounds, picking up donations from 33 neighbourhood homes. They collected 1,195 empties, which came to $174.30.

While at the Beer Store making the drop-off, Abigail and her father, Erik Waddell, were approached by a woman waiting in line who wanted to donate $3 to the cause when she learned what the young student was going to do with the money.

The giving didn’t stop there.

Another Riverside South resident chipped in $58.68.

And through the generosity of the community, Abigail also collected towels, bedding, dog toys and a dog carrier.

“There was no room left,” she said of her garage, which was full of donated items and empties.

Someone from the local Men in Kilts window cleaning service came by to contribute $65, bringing the grand total to $300.

The project, even in such a short time, offered numerous lessons.

The Alta Vista Community Association is backing a Snow Mole program that aims to audit walking routes during the winter in a bid to improve pedestrian access. Clinton Cowan, association president, says the clearing of side streets, such as Hillary Avenue at Randall Avenue, is essential both for pedestrians and vehicles because many local streets don’t have sidewalks.

That committee is also seeking volunteers for the Glebe, Lowertown, Old Ottawa East and Old Ottawa South.

Sidewalks in the Alta Vista community tend to be reserved for the main drags such as Alta Vista Drive, Cowan said.

Sidewalks that do exist aren’t in the best shape – many are aging, narrow and crumbling in places, making them hazardous even if they are cleared of snow and ice in a timely fashion.

That means those community side streets are shared by pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

And those on foot face trip hazards, particularly in the winter, said Cowan.

“There’s a high sense that unless you have a vehicle, you’re an economic prisoner of your house because you don’t

want to go tread on the side streets,” he said.

Age-Friendly Ottawa launches seniors’ weather reporting initiative

A group of seniors is looking to recruit some snow spies for a few of Ottawa’s downtown neighbourhoods.

Previous spy experience varies from the joy of walking outdoors in all kinds of weather, to having age on your side – 60 years old and older. Or, people with young children only for these walking winter moles please.

Age-Friendly Ottawa launched a winter walking safe audit this winter called the Snow Mole initiative, with the aim to learn all of winter’s slippery secrets on Ottawa’s sidewalks.

Dianne Breton, chair of the Age-Friendly Pedestrian Safety Committee, said the goal is to help determine what makes it safe for seniors during the winter months.

“We want to find out all there is to know about winter walking,” Breton said.

two after a heavy snowfall or freezing rain.

Then, pick a destination – school, grocery store, bank or drugstore – and after the outing report on a series of short questions, and a yes-or-no checklist which includes: • Have the sidewalks and streets in front of the house, residence or school been plowed, sanded, salted?

• Are the sidewalks on the route well sanded or salted?

• Does snow thrown onto the sidewalk from the snowplows or people’s snowblowers interfere with walking?

• If there are paths or walkways, are they well plowed?

• Are the snowbanks shorter than your waist?

• Can you walk safely to your destination or the near-

est bus stop?

Breton said they tried to make the report as simple as possible to fill out in order to encourage participation.

The idea was originally launched last winter, and has expanded to this year, to create what Breton calls an extensive report on the ups and downs of walking safely on Ottawa streets and sidewalks during the winter season.

Breton added that reports from other vulnerable pedestrians such as people with ability aids and parents with young children are also welcome, as their experiences navigating an icy sidewalk can also come with challenges.

“This is just a snapshot of people going out on a winter day and what is it like walking in the winter,” Breton said.

“We want to know if there are serious reoccurring problems, and find solutions.”

The end goal, she said, is to have some tangible information for the city to consider when it comes to clearing neighbourhood sidewalks

and streets.

“The whole idea is that we can get something done.

Get the city to pay attention.

When it’s bad out, older people won’t want to get up and go out.”

Breton said that past walking audits – which the committee has held in Lowertown, Hintonburgh and the Glebe – have been welcomed by city staff, resulting in great feedback from the city.

The Snow Mole winter pedestrian safety audit forms are available for Old Ottawa South residents online at oldottawasouth.ca. For Old Ottawa East residents go online at ottawaeastcag.ca/blog.

In the Glebe, reports will be available at Abbotsford House, 950 Bank St. All reports must be submitted to their community contact by March 15. Walkers can also drop the reports off at City Hall.

Breton said the committee will release its final report at a Council on Aging of Ottawa-hosted lunch-and-learn speaker series on April 27.

Farmwife goes in search of a Golden “A farm without a dog is not a farm at all,” the Farmer declared one evening, as we enjoyed a movie with a dog as one of the central characters. It has been about a year since we had to put our 17-year-old dog down. Cody had a good, long life and he is missed. He was a bit untrainable in certain areas, but still a lovable dog. Over the last few years he became deaf, so he wasn’t much of a watchdog anymore — but he never really was. He was more apt to welcome strangers because many of them came bearing gifts — the gas man shared his sandwich with Cody when he came to fill our tank, and the UPS man always had dog cookies in his truck.

Cody was a runner, so when he wasn’t in the house he couldn’t wander free. He got me out of the house every day because he needed to run down the road, dragging me on the end of the leash. He was also an incredible food thief — even when he couldn’t possibly have been hungry.

But despite all his faults, he left a void in our home. Our next dog will be trained. And we will also build a high fence around the house so he can roam freely. It sounds like the Farmer is ready to start looking.

My husband has decided that his semi-retirement dog is going to be a Golden Retriever. He imagines taking this dog with him to scout properties or to finish up the log cabin he is building. The dog will accompany us on long walks around our farm and will sleep on Cody’s old blanket, in front of the TV and beside our bed.

I started the search for a Golden, and learned a few things. First of all, it’s pretty tricky finding a Golden Retriever that needs a new home.

We could put our name on a waiting list for a spring litter, but that means entering a whole new world of training — waking up in the middle of the night and listening to puppy wailing. The Farmer says he is up for it. I

She chewed his shoes, his furniture and his books and created a few permanent designs on the carpet. I’m not sure I’m up for training a pup. Besides, I have always had rescue dogs. There certainly are enough dogs looking for homes. We are bound to find a Golden in the lot somewhere.

I have registered with the organization Golden Rescue. I filled out their in-depth questionnaire and listed our vet and a few people as references. I also discovered that Goldens are prone to a unique set of health problems we have to be wary of. Hopefully, they

will be able to find us a nice dog that doesn’t mind the occasional barn cat or small child visiting, and likes rides in the car. Sometimes Golden Rescue brings in dogs from other countries like Istanbul, where they are found wandering the streets. Other times the dogs are needing to be rehomed because their owner has passed away, or needs to go into a residence that doesn’t allow pets.

The Farmer has always wanted a Golden Retriever, so that’s what we are looking for. If you know of one that needs a home, let me know!

Attacks will make us stronger

T

he murder of six people and the wounding of others at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Quebec on Jan. 29 shocked all of Canada. And yet in the midst of all of the horror of this tragic shooting, Canadians have come together.

Such hatred, prejudice and racism as represented by this act of violence have no place in our society, and Canadians across the country have been quick and unified in denouncing such action and showing love and compassion for those directly impacted.

Are you surprised?

By the shooting and deaths — yes, because an attack like this on those in a worship space has not happened before in this country. But we have not been surprised by the reaction of Canadians because we care about each other, we respect each other’s beliefs and we value our diversity.

The actions of one person, as evidenced in this tragedy, are not going to shake our faith in each other. If anything, this has become an opportunity to express what it means to be a Canadian, what it means to be a part of a society that embraces dif-

ficult cultures, different faiths, different viewpoints and how our common values are paramount and bring us together as one.

Will we ever forget this tragic shooting and those who died or were injured?

No, just as we have not forgotten the 1989 massacre at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal where 14 women were killed in a rampage, also by a solo shooter filled with hatred.

And just like the Montreal massacre has led to ongoing and enhanced awareness of violence against women, we know that this murderous rampage in Quebec City will become a similar incident of focus that will lead to greater awareness and advocacy of our Canadian belief in diversity and acceptance.

So those who died on Jan. 29 will not have died in vain.

Their memory will live on and will be yet another building block in the continuing project of creating the Canadian society that we all want to see and experience, one that respects and enjoys the diversity and differences that each of us brings to our cultural mosaic.

ure, it’s kind of cheap fun to sit back and watch the city of Toronto fight with the Ontario provincial government. Too bad there has to be a winner, some would say.

But the issue is serious and might be coming our way in the not-toodistant future. The argument is over tolls on highways. Toronto, after years of dilly-dallying while its traffic congestion went from bad to awful, finally bit the bullet and decided to start charging drivers for the use of the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway.

Not so fast, said the province, for reasons that may not be entirely non-political.

It’s an interesting and important discussion.

Tory’s proposal, a $2 a time toll for use of the Don Valley and the Gardiner, was seen as occupying an unfortunate middle ground — enough to be irritating but not enough to deter most drivers and not enough to raise the big money Toronto’s transit system needs.

There were better ways, it was suggested.

But just when the debate over the plan was about to begin, Ontario’s Premier, Kathleen Wynne, stopped it by declaring that Toronto would not be allowed to put tolls in place.

There is the suggestion that this was done to curry favour with people who live in the suburbs surrounding the city, whose votes Wynne needs in an election.

Get the kids moving to ward off depression

t the start of the school year, I decided it was time to upgrade my smartphone. My telecommunications provider loves me because, since 2004, I’ve only upgraded twice. They offered me a great deal on an iPhone 6s and then talked me into handing down my old phone to my pre-teen son.

The kids are always moaning that “every one of their friends has a cell phone except me.” I figured I might as well try him out on it under supervision, while I still have an ounce of control over how he’s using it. Once he’s in high school, I figure, he’ll have free rein of social media use.

I wanted to give him some guidance.

Findlay Creek offers cabin fever cure-all with upcoming Winterfest

Have a wicked case of cabin fever?

The Findlay Creek Community Association may have the cure you’re looking for.

The volunteer group is organizing its third annual Winterfest on Feb. 19, from 1 to 3 p.m., during the Family Day long weekend.

Meagan Côté, association president, said the free event is the ideal opportunity for residents who have just moved to the booming village to meet their neighbours. Last year’s winter fun drew an estimated 300 people over the course of the afternoon.

“Winters are quite long in Canada and if you just stay in your house the whole time you’re going to get sad,” she said. “You might as well enjoy it and see what’s going on.”

There will be many returning highlights at Diamond Jubilee Park, including horse-drawn wagon rides along side streets near the park.

“That’s definitely a big part of it,” Côté said.

The Metcalfe Skating Club will put on a StarSkating Figure Skating Show at the park’s outdoor rink beginning at 1:30 p.m., marking their return to the carnival after a one-

Findlay Creek volunteers have already been hard at work ensuring

“We have a great group of volunteers who make the best ice in the city. I’m sure of it,” Côté said, adding that when the Metcalfe Skating

Club came out during the association’s inaugural winter carnival in 2015, the skaters were surprised by the high quality of the outdoor ice surface at Diamond Jubilee Park.

“And we’re shooting for that again this year,” she said.

Snow sports and games will be another fun offering. Circus Delights will be setting up carnival games, such as high strikers, in which participants can attempt to ring a bell after hitting a target.

“It’s actually quite popular,” Côté said, adding that the fun will also include an inflatable beanbag toss, snow painting, and a large game of snow Jenga.

Radio station Jump 106.9 will be pumping up the party with music.

Côté’s husband will once again pitch in to operate the maple taffy station.

“We boil the maple syrup and you get the Popsicle stick on the snow and everything,” she said. “It’s really popular. Last year I think we went through five litres of maple syrup.”

Other treats will include popcorn and hot chocolate.

The community association’s Winterfest aims to draw out Findlay Creek residents of all ages for an afternoon of community building.

“Come on out, enjoy the nice

winter before it all melts away — hopefully!” Côté quipped.

City one step closer in games bid

The city is one step closer to realizing the dream of hosting the 2021 Canada Summer games.

Mayor Jim Watson tucked the bid book into an Team Ontario knapsack on Tuesday Jan. 31, after which an excited team that included bid co-chairs Sue Holloway took the book on a five-kilometre relay along Queen Elizabeth Drive and ending at the Canada Games Council office on Riverside Drive.

It was last held in Sherbrooke, Que. The capital is competing against Sudbury, Kitchener-Waterloo and the Niagara Region.

The city’s finance and economic development committee unanimously backed the bid in December. Winning the chance to host could mean millions in upgrades for facilities like the Nepean Sportsplex and the Terry Fox Athletic Facility.

It will also mean millions in revenue. When Halifax hosted the Winter Games they brought in $130 million and created 1,000 jobs.

Organizers want to highlight Ottawa’s role as a festival city.

The selection committee is making site visits on March 2, and the key is to show Ottawa has a small town feel, Holloway told Metroland Media in December.

“More than 100 stakeholders have been involved in the process of developing the Ottawa 2021 Canada Summer Games bid book, including business leaders, tourism experts and arts and culture organizations,” Watson said in a press release. The Greely Winter Carnival continued last weekend with record crowds showing up for the Firefighters Pancake Breakfast Saturday morning, including Mayor Watson and MP Pierre Poilievre. They served 265 meals that morning, while the Scouts had their Elephant Ears and ticket draw outside and made a whopping $600 towards their troupe. The Greely Idol auditions followed the breakfast. This year there were over 20 entries of very talented people that came out to give it their all.

On Saturday night, the Dinner and Comedy show at the Greely Community Centre was a huge hit! Close to 150 attendees laughed the night away with comedy by Absolute Comedy while enjoying a delicious buffet provided by Orchard View Wedding and Event Centre. I enjoyed serving food at the Sunday Family Brunch that was hosted by the Greely Lions. The brunch was very successful with tables full of families enjoying the famous made-to-order omelettes.

The Greely Idol finals were also held on Sunday and I would like to congratulate Mary Nahweghbow-Holder, a grade 9 student, from Canterbury High School as the Senior Greely Idol 2017 and Alexis Hockridge, a grade 7 student, from St. Peter Canisius as the Junior Idol for 2017.

The success once again of the Annual Greely Winter Carnival can be attributed to the hard work of the entire Greely Community Association under President Bruce Brayman’s leadership in organizing and running the carnival. Of course many thanks to all the Volunteer Firefighters, Greely Lions, and the attendees for their continued support and volunteering to help out.

The Annual Busting Out the Brews fundraiser for the Osgoode Care Centre (OCC) was extremely well attended! There were food and beverage samples from local businesses and auctions with live entertainment ending the night. This year, they raised over $71,000, which is incredible community support at its’ best! Thank you to everyone involved in the organization of this spectacular event and especially to all those that bought tickets to support the event which in turn, supports the OCC. I was proud to represent our strong and proud rural community at this year’s Ontario Municipal Association #ROMAspeaks Conference in Toronto. I was among the 900 delegates that attended the informative and motivating conference on the promotion, support, and enhancement of strong and effective rural governments.

Association of Municipalities Ontario (AMO) President, Lynn Dollin, summarized her feelings best by saying “municipal governments are the most accountable and responsive level of government” when it comes to making decisions and tackling issues. We are the grass route level that can contribute to make changes towards making our municipalities greater in the future. One of the other engaging guest speakers was author Doug Griffiths who spoke about his book entitled “13 Ways to Kill Your Community”. It was informative and his take home message was how attitude is the biggest factor and roadblock to building a successful community. The other very entertaining guest speaker was Rex Murphy, who with his quick wit and sense of humour had the delegates in stitches within 5 minutes of speaking. Coming away from the ROMA conference, I feel totally energized with ideas and commitment to continue to build a strong rural community in Osgoode Ward.

In the January 26 edition of this paper, I reported to you that on January 23, I had my first meeting with representatives of Canoe Bay Developments Inc, the tentative new owner of the 10-acre parcel of land at 3071 Riverside Drive. On January 31, I hosted a meeting between Canoe Bay and representatives from the Executive of the Riverside Park Community and Recreation Association. Our 90 minute meeting was comprehensive and frank, touching on many issues about the proposal and likes/dislikes within the community. A public Open House, to view the proposal, listen to their presentation and ask questions/share your feedback is slated for Thursday March 9. A location has not yet been finalized. I will circulate my third information update/community bulletin by Canada Post to residents in Riverside Park North prior to the meeting. As a reminder, I also have an email list which I use to share updates as well, kindly let me know if you would like to be added.

Police to Focus on Red Light Runners The Ottawa Police Service will focus on red light runners in February. Between 2011 and 2015, there were 3,841 collisions resulting in 1,289 injuries and 4 fatalities in Ottawa, due to red light running. The fine for running a red light is $325 plus 3 demerit points. Running a red light places the community in danger. Please stop for red lights.

Traffic Calming to Expand in 2017 My draft plan for additions and modifications to various traffic calming initiatives in River Ward for 2017 is ready. I provided a brief overview of the proposed changes for Riverside Park at the community association’s meeting on February 1 and for Hunt Club at their community association meeting on February 6.

Mooney’s Bay Park Update A needs assessment for the Mooney’s Bay Pavilion will be conducted in 2017 by the Parks and Recreation Dept with assistance from a consultant. Stakeholder groups will first be engaged in the process, looking at the needs of today and tomorrow and then I plan to host a public consultation with the greater community, once options and proposals have been better defined and ready for consideration and input. Sue Holloway Park, the outdoor fitness centre formally located in the north end of Mooney’s Bay Park was removed last year as it reached the end of its lifecycle. Local stakeholder groups will be assembled to discuss potential fitness components of the new park as well as possible locations to install. I also plan to host public consultations with the greater community, once the stakeholder groups have had input.

Hunt Club-Riverside intersection faces review in wake of crash report Volume blamed for traffic woes

One of the busiest intersections in Ottawa – Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive – is going under the microscope after it topped the city’s newly released collisions report for 2015.

River Coun. Riley Brockington, whose ward includes that pressure point, was not surprised to see it at the pinnacle of the Top-10 intersections – again.

Brockington points to volume as the main culprit.

“It is, of all the Top-10 intersections for collisions, number 1 for volume,” he said, referring to the 80,000 vehicles that travel through there on average each weekday.

“The intersection fails to move the volume of traffic that exists,” said Brockington. “The volume of traffic in the afternoon is, quite frankly, overwhelming and that’s why you see a backlog of cars on Riverside, past Uplands, past River Gate.”

Add some snow into the mix and cars often back up to Walkley Road.

Just across the Hunt Club Bridge, Prince of Wales Drive and Hunt Club Road sees a daily average of 78,000 vehicles.

“It just further illustrates how busy, how much traffic there is going through this area, the south end,” Brockington said.

REVIEW COMING

For their starring position on the Top 10 list, those collision-heavy intersections will be reviewed by the city’s traffic services team this spring and summer, based on an in-depth breakdown of the city’s stats and five-year collision trends as well as reports from the Ottawa Police Service.

A cursory examination of the data for Hunt Club-Riverside has already begun.

Staff have already noted that the majority of southbound vehicles turning right onto Hunt Club Bridge from Riverside are getting rear-ended.

Of the 60 total crashes at that intersection, 51 involved rear-end

collisions. Twenty-four of the 60 crashes were at that turn and also involved cars hit from behind.

The review will determine where in the turn the crashes are occurring, and whether they’re on Hunt Club while cars merge into traffic or while drivers are on Riverside waiting to make that right turn.

“Based on what we’re seeing we can potentially then develop some counter measures to address those,” said Phil Landry, a Hunt Club resident and director of the city’s traffic services.

“The volume of traffic in the afternoon is, quite frankly, overwhelming and that’s why you see a backlog of cars on Riverside, past Uplands, past River Gate.”

Those may include an awareness campaign.

“We may put some signs up at the approaches to the intersection just to remind people to be aware that rear-end collisions occur in this area and you might want to pay attention to the person in front of you,” Landry said.

The new signage could roll out this spring and summer.

High-grip asphalt may also help that turn, preventing cars from sliding into each.

“Sometimes what we’ll do is if we have rear-end collisions we’ll test the asphalt and put in some higher friction asphalt,” he said.

“Now, it’s more expensive to put that type of asphalt so we don’t do it everywhere in the city but we do – within 200 or 300 metres of an intersection – put those in to assist.”

As well, the review could suggest extending the southbound righthand turn lane so that it stretches further back along Riverside.

“Because right now the queue is back into the through lane (on Riverside),” Landry said, adding that any road modifications decided won’t be done this year.

Plans are, however, currently being fleshed out by another city team to extend the westbound left-turn lane from Hunt Club onto Riverside, allowing more cars to get out of the through lane and wait in a dedicated turn lane.

“I’m not too surprised there that the demand for the left turn is higher,” said Landry, given the rate of growth to the south, such as in Riverside South.

As well, the review may suggest extending the southbound righthand turn lane further north along Riverside.

John Sankey, a longtime Hunt Club resident and past president of the Hunt Club Community Organization, was also not surprised that intersection topped the list.

“There’s so many things wrong with it, but the basic problem is it’s grossly overloaded,” he said. “And it’s getting worse because the population is growing.”

The only answer, in his mind, that would spell relief would be widening the Hunt Club Bridge to the west to create divided east and west spans.

“The bottom line is that bridge is handling over twice as much traffic than it’s designed for,” Sankey said.

“It’s getting worse everyday. And people are so infernally frustrated by the time they reach the intersection from just about any direction that I think they’re rushing things too.”

But Landry said that’s not in the cards at this point.

“We’re limited with the bridge unless we want to widen the bridge,” he said. “But that’s not going to

happen with the budget.”

Sankey also said modifying or removing traffic lights at certain points along Hunt Club to “a sensible number” could also reduce the pressure, such as at Dazé Street near Bank Street, at Antares Drive and West Hunt Club, west of Prince of Wales Drive, and one of the lights into the Nepean Crossroads Centre at Merivale Road and West Hunt Club.

“We simply have to start treating Hunt Club Road as the only bypass road that we’ve got and that we’re ever going to get,” said Sankey.

“We’ve got to start taking moderately drastic action to provide for it.”

Principal receives national honour

St. Thomas More Catholic elementary school, located in the Hunt Club Park community, is in celebration mode.

The school’s principal, Denise Gotell, has been named one of Canada’s outstanding principals for 2017 by the Learning Partnership, a national charity that supports public education in Canada.

Gotell is one of 40 educators chosen from every Canadian province and territory for “demonstrating innovating, having an entrepreneurial spirit and for employing creativity in finding solutions and opportunities,” the Ottawa Catholic School Board said in a statement.

“Denise Gotell’s leadership has brought her school to the forefront when it comes to innovative learning and helping students build global competencies,” Denise Andre, the board’s director of education, said. “Denise ensures students are engaged in an inclusive and welcoming community and establishes a culture of high ex-

Gotell is said to be an advocate for special education and equity, which led her to champion assistive technology. She has embraced different avenues, such as social media channels, to give students a more prominent voice and to encourage collaboration and engagement, according to the school board.

“Every person here wants to be their best self. There are no barriers if you develop trusting relationships with staff, students, and parents,” said Gotell, who also mentors and coaches other leaders.

She began her education career as a teacher in Nova Scotia 20 years ago. She was hired by the Ottawa Catholic School

Board 18 years ago and since then she has worked in a number of different roles, including as principal for the past seven years.

The school board was chosen in the fall of 2015 from among 35 boards across the country to be recognized by the Canadian Education Association for its work in modernizing its classrooms to meet students’ needs.

Gotell is credited for leading St. Thomas More in this initiative.

“We are delighted to be celebrating these exceptional principals for their contributions to their schools and communities,” Rod Thompson, the Learning Partnership’s director of executive leadership programs, said in the statement.

“Their dedication to building and leading teams of great teachers plays a vital role in positively impacting student achievement and success and we are elated to recognize these dynamic leaders in the Canadian public education system,” said Thompson.

The principals chosen will be honoured at an awards gala in Toronto on Feb. 28.

November. The tour of First and Second World War battlefields will include stops at Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, Juno Beach and Normandy.

When the group heads abroad Nov. 6 to 15, it will be the farthest Matthew has ever travelled, and he intends to make the most of it.

“We’re going to be at Vimy on Remembrance Day, so it’s

pretty exciting,” said the Grade 9 student at Osgoode Township High School.

The idea for the trip emerged three years ago. The initial thought was to travel there earlier, but the decision was made to time the trip with the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Since then, 18 kids from the 30-member unit have signed up,

as well as four cadet corps staff members and about a dozen parents. The unit, which meets regularly at CFS Leitrim, is made up of kids from several south Ottawa communities, including Osgoode, Metcalfe, Vernon, Edwards, Cumberland to the east, and south to Winchester and Russell.

Fundraising efforts have ramped up over the past year, and the unit is now gearing up for a long list of events to hit its goal of $55,000 to $65,000, to offset the cost of the trip for the kids. The adults are required to pay their own way.

“Fundraising is keeping us hopping for the next six or seven months,” said Kim Sheldrick, Matthew’s mom and the unit’s public relations rep.

The unit is working with a number of community partners to raise money, including the Osgoode and Kemptville legion branches, as well as other area groups and businesses.

The young cadets, who range in age from 12 to 18, have already discovered that the fundraising requires significant commitment and planning.

“On top of all of these events, we still have our regular corps training and regular fundraisers and their weekend field training exercises,” said Sheldrick, who is co-chair of the unit’s Vimy fundraising committee. “So it’s a lot on these kids for the next

little while.”

Even with all that on their plate, excitement is really building. And it’s no wonder, given the tour highlights they have to look forward to.

“Life experience — sometimes it trumps classrooms.”

The battlefield tour includes a visit to the Juno Beach battle site and a stop at the Bény-surMer Canadian War Cemetery, where many Canadian soldiers were laid to rest after their lives were claimed in the early stages of the Battle of Normandy.

The tour also features a trip to the In Flanders Field Museum, tunnels and trenches in the Vimy region and stops to a deportation centre and a Jewish museum.

“One of our first stops is in

Amsterdam. We’re going to visit Anne Frank House,” said Sheldrick, adding that each stop will be sure to leave a lasting impression on the teens and preteens.

“It’s going to be memorable and busy. Life experience — sometimes it trumps classrooms.”

To link the trip with a local connection, the unit’s commanding officer has requested that each participating cadet research a local resident who was killed in the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

“Then when we’re over there, we’re going to try and find their names and do pencil rubbings of their names (on gravestones) at Vimy,” said Sheldrick.

That is designed to foster a deeper appreciation for the wartime sacrifices made by local residents.

“If you’ve researched, you might find out that their great grandchild is a friend of yours.

Then it gives it a more personal connection, that it’s not just a name on a monument,” Sheldrick said. “It’s a real person with parents and possibly a spouse and kids. It brings it

more to life.”

T

he old Singer Sewing machine was considered a piece of furniture in the parlour, but in the wintertime, with the parlour closed off, the door shut, and a braided rug rolled at the bottom to keep out the cold draft, the Singer was rolled into the kitchen.

Hardly a day passed that Mother wasn’t on the old machine. There was always a patch needed here and a hem there, and on the nights Mother wasn’t working on her diaries, she often was at the Singer sewing machine.

My sister Audrey thought it was time she could make something for herself, and finally, one winter night, after she had badgered Mother enough, she was told she could use the sewing machine.

Ten days after seeking out Dr. Frank Rybicki on Twitter and asking him for a 3D printed hand, David Chasse was finally able to not only use his left hand, but gain his independence.

“I haven’t been able to grab a water bottle normally, which is easier for everybody else, in such a long time,”

the Renfrew resident said after Rybicki helped strap his wrist and hand into a dark green prosthetic hand created in the Ottawa Hospital’s new 3D printing lab, which officially launched on Feb. 3, making it the first hospital-based, multi-department medical 3D printing program in Canada.

As a crowd at the hospital’s General campusbased Rehabilitation Centre

watched, Chasse flicked his wrist to close his new fingers around the bottle and pick it up, to applause and cheers.

“Huge deal. They gave me a hand back, fingers.

It just means a lot and this new technology is absolutely amazing,” said Chasse, 33, who lost four fingers on his left hand in a motorcycle accident in June 2015.

Prince of Wales Drive Coordinated Network Modifications Project – Public Information Session The City of Ottawa is hosting a Public Information Session to discuss the Prince of Wales Drive Coordinated Network Modifications Project. This project will improve vehicular, cycling and pedestrian traffic flow as well as rehabilitate the asphalt roadway along the Prince of Wales Drive corridor. Canada 150 Groves Project As we celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, special projects are being implemented to leave a legacy for future generations. Almost a year and a half after the accident, he was fitted with a small glovelike prosthetic. Instead of fingers, it has a short, wide hook.

Chasse began looking into 3D printing because his insurance company refused to pay for a better fitting replacement.

“I need it for life,” he said.

For that reason, he reached out to Rybicki on Twitter after seeing his online videos about 3D-printer technology. Within a week and a half, his new hand was crafted by the hospital’s new printer.

“I’m not supposed to be self conscious about it, but you can’t help it out in public,” Chasse said of the loss of his fingers.

He said his new 3D hand “is a game-changer. It’s like it’s given me back my fingers.”

The hospital’s printing lab has been 18 months in the making under the leadership of Rybicki, the Ottawa Hospital’s chief of medical imaging and chair of radiology at the University of Ottawa. He was recruited to come to Ottawa that many months ago from Boston

“3D printing and helping patients … is really becoming something that we can do every day with the right people and the right technology and the right dedication,” he said.

He recalled the first cellphones, which were “big and klunky.”

Despite this, “we knew that that was the future,” he said.

The hospital’s new 3D printer, which is the about the size of an oversized office photocopier, is on the cutting edge, just as the first cellphones were.

“We’re holding the very first cellphone in Canada, and I think that’s they way you should think about this,” said Rybicki.

The in-house technology will allow surgeons to practice on models for highly complex cases, as well as to further research advancements and develop prosthetics. The goal is to reduce the need for invasive surgery and lengthy anesthetics, improve patient outcomes and save money.

For instance, Chasse’s 3Dprinted hand cost about $300 and took 13 hours to print out.

“The overall printer technology is in the order of $300,000 but the savings, every time that you make a model as opposed to milling something (like a complex prosthetic), can be anywhere from a tenth of the price to half the price,” Rybicki said. “The machines pay for themselves in operating room time quickly.”

That same printer that helped give Chasse a new lease on life also gave Sebastian Chavarria, 8, a $100 replacement prosthetic hand in red-andblue Spiderman colours.

Rybicki presented the Barrhaven boy with the prosthetic for his under-formed left hand.

Sebastian was born with Moebius syndrome, a rare neurological condition that caused two nerves in his brain to under-develop. He spent almost the first year of his life at CHEO. Two years ago Sebastian became the first person in Canada to receive a 3D printed hand, which was produced after the boy’s mother, Lety, contacted the University of Ottawa after she was initially told it would be too expensive at between $25,000 and $30,000 to make a prosthesis for a child who would quickly outgrow the device.

“I’m a mom that won’t stop,” Lety said, thrilled that the 3D technology is on the cusp of becoming more readily available to Canadians thanks to the Ottawa Hospital’s new lab.

“He’s someone who will benefit from having a 3D-printed hand in all types of ways because as he grows, his fingers will need to get longer and longer,” Rybicki said, adding this represents a huge cost savings. These can cost upwards of $25,000 to $30,000.

“Hello,” Sebastian greeted the crowd of hospital staff and local politicians. “This is my robot hand. It’s the same as Spiderman … but it doesn’t have the web in it.”

The technology is revolutionizing medicine.

“What we are doing now is the tip of the iceberg,” said Dr. Adnan Sheikh, the hospital’s chief of radiology.

The hospital is already eyeing next steps, including one day purchasing the technology that can print titanium bone plates that can be implanted in patients, similar to what’s already being done at a few U.S. hospitals, but not in Canada — yet.

It also won’t be long before organs, such as kidneys and livers, as well as heart valves, can be printed and implanted, a much-needed capability amid an aging population and given the often long waits for donated organs, Sheikh said.

“This is going to revolutionize what we are doing.”

Mooney’s Bay resident Sue Holloway wins Mayor’s Cup

Stittsville’s Erica Wiebe, an Olympic gold medalist, and dual-sport athlete Vincent de Haître from Cumberland took home the female and male athlete of the year honours at the Ottawa Sports Awards, held at Algonquin College on Feb. 1.

Wiebe won the gold medal in wrestling at the Rio 2016 Summer Games, while de Haître won national titles in both cycling and speed skating in 2016, ranking on the world stage in long-track skating.

Wiebe’s mother, Paula Preston, also took home a major award, winning the Spirit of Sport Award.

Preston has volunteered with multiple sports clubs that her two daughters competed with, including the Kanata Rythmic Gymnastics Club, which her daughter Alisa attended. After Alisa retired, Preston stayed on as a volunteer and has been with the club for 23 years. She’s also volunteered with the Ottawa Fury and the National Capital Wrestling Club.

The Brian Kilrea Lifetime Achievement Coaching Award went to Don Moxley, a Lebreton Flats-area resident who has been coaching cycling and Nordic skiing for more than 30 years, developing athletes through the Ottawa Bicycle Club. He also was the Nordic skiing assistant coach at Carleton University for years, as well as a coach with the Ottawa Racers and Kanata

Racers.

The Lifetime Achievement Award for a Technical Official went to registered artistic gymnastics judge Lois Laquerre, who has acted as a mentor to many other judges, and officiated at every level of competition.

Volleyball coach and manager Cathy O’Doherty was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award for a Sports Volunteer, after 31 years coaching both high school and elite volleyball in Ottawa. She’s coached more than 50 girls who have gone on to play Canadian or American university volleyball.

In repeat awards, the Carleton Ravens men’s basketball team once again took home the male team of the year, with rugby coach Jen Boyd winning female coach of the year, and track coach Glenroy Gilbert winning the male coach of the year.

The Cyclery-Opus women’s cycling team won the female team of the year.

Many other athletes from around the city and surrounding communities were also recognized, as the top athlete in every sport was recognized, as were teams who won provincial or national level championships.

Carrot and farro salad a tasty alternative for lunch This salad is packed with fresh ingredients, chewy farro and beans. Leftovers pack well for lunch. Look for farro in the bulk section at your supermarket. If you like, substitute pearl barley for the farro.

Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes Standing time: 15 minutes Serves: 6 INGREDIENTS

- 1 cup (250 mL) semipearled farro - 2 cups (500 mL) diced carrots - ¼ cup (50 mL) apple cider vinegar - 1 tbsp (15 mL) honey - 1-1/2 tsp (7 mL) Dijon mustard - ¼ tsp (1 mL) each salt and pepper

- 1/3 cup (75 mL) vegetable oil - 1 can (19 oz/540 mL) black beans, drained and rinsed - ¾ cup (175 mL) crumbled feta cheese - 1/3 cup (75 mL) finelychopped shallots - 1/3 cup (75 mL) chopped fresh parsley leaves PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS

Bring large pot of salted water to boil over high heat.

Add farro and return to boil.

Reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes or until tender but somewhat chewy, adding carrots in the last five minutes of cooking.

Meanwhile, in large bowl, whisk together vinegar, honey, mustard, salt and pepper, gradually whisking in oil until

blended. Drain farro mixture and add to bowl; toss to coat.

Let stand 15 minutes. Stir in beans, cheese, shallot and parsley; toss to combine. Enjoy immediately or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Tip: Farro is available whole grain, semi-pearled and precooked and can take 10 to 30 minutes to cook. Semi-pearled farro has had some of its tough outer bran removed.
