Ken McLeod’s replacement has big shoes to fill.

The veteran OC Transpo operator will park his bus for the last time on June 16 after more than 42 years behind the wheel, most recently as the driver on five rural shopper routes that have served as a lifeline for many passengers who have relied on the free service since 2012.

McLeod became the driver three months after the service was established for rural residents living as far west as Dunrobin, east to Cumberland and Sarsfield, and as far south as Kars.

Not long after his first day on the job on Dec. 31, 1974, McLeod attended a retirement event and was asked to try on the retiring employee’s tunic. It fit, but he was advised to remove the maple leaf crests that represent seniority.

“I did the math and said, ‘40 years? Holy jumpin’.

An Alta Vista resident’s vigilant attempts to protect house and home may provide the key needed to identify two break-in suspects.

It was still broad daylight on May 28 at 8:25 p.m. when a man walked up to the front door of a house near the corner of Pleasant Park Drive and Rodney Crescent.

He spotted a video camera and then immediately turned and walked away.

“It was too late at that point,” Staff Sgt. Michael Haarbosch, head of the police break and enter unit, said of the camera filming the man, which has allowed the break-in team to share those images publicly in the hopes two suspects can be identified.

It’s becoming more and more common for homeowners to install surveillance cameras on their properties “probably just for this very reason,” Haarbosch said. “It puts us at an advantage investigatively when we start with images such as the ones we released today.

“It’s very diligent on his or her part,” he said of the homeowner, noting that the camera equipment at the home is also high-tech and captured quality images.

Soon after the first suspect turned tail, another man, who shielded the lower half of his face with clothing, walked up to the door and allegedly forced his way inside the empty home.

But that tripped an audible alarm.

“I think he was in and out in pretty short order, and that’s why nothing was taken,” said Haarbosch.

The absent homeowner was alerted to the alarm going off and then asked a neighbour to check on the property, “and found that the home had been forcibly entered through the front door and then police were contacted to attend,” Haarbosch said.

The first suspect is described by police as an olive-skinned male, between 25 and 35 years old, with a slim build and brown hair. He wore blue jeans, a white long-sleeved shirt and blue skater-type shoes.

The second suspect is described as a Caucasian male with black or dark brown hair, but balding on top of his head at the back. He wore black sunglasses, a white long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans and shoes with a distinctive beige pattern with red on the sides.

CHEO heroes set new telethon fundraising record A call to action has been answered netting a new record for funds raised through the 34th annual CHEO telethon, televised June 10 and 11.

The event, and fundraising efforts over the past year, generated a total of $8,727,897 for the regional children’s hospital, the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre and Roger Neilson House.

“Everyone at CHEO, OCTC, Roger Neilson House and the CHEO Research Institute work as one team, dedicated to helping children live their best lives possible,” Kevin Keohane, president and chief executive of the CHEO Foundation, said at the close of the 24-hour telethon broadcast.

The new record is just the latest.

Last year, the telethon helped set a new record with $8,013,771. As well, 2015 saw a record of $7.94 million, while 2014 was a banner year with $7.1 million raised.

Given his passion for the sport and driving fans on game night, he chose to delay his retirement until June 16 just in case the Sens made it to the Stanley Cup finals.

“I had it all planned out. The only thing that happened was Pittsburgh scored that goal in double overtime and shattered my dream,” he chuckled, but added that it turned out OK because he worked the final home game in which the Sens beat Pittsburgh 2-1.

day route, which makes stops in Carp, Stittsville, Kanata, Bayshore and Lincoln Fields before reaching the Carlingwood Shopping Centre.

She gifted him with a card and a bottle of Australian wine, and McLeod surprised her with a card. Jaik began catching weekly rides three years ago.

A Dunrobin rider introduced McLeod to the other riders, including Jaik, but she couldn’t remember McLeod’s name for the first couple of weeks.

“I felt so bad because he always said, ‘Good morning, Jasna.’ And I didn’t remember his name. It was awful for me,” she said with a chuckle.

The regular rider said McLeod has always gone the extra mile for her, and actually

served as a lifeline.

“I don’t drive and I live in Carp and I have appointments downtown with the doctors,” she said. “So I always try to make appointments for Wednesday.

“He’s wonderful because he picks me up at my driveway, not at the bus stop,” Jaik said, which saves her from walking half a kilometre to the official stop, for which she is grateful, particularly in the winter months.

“Always, if he has a replacement, he tells them, ‘Be sure to stop there.’”

It’s a bittersweet goodbye for Jaik because although she will miss McLeod, she knows he’s ready to embrace retirement after more than four decades behind the wheel.

“He’s a lovely guy,” she said.

“He’s happy to retire. He’s never bored.”

Margaret Dunn has been taking the 303 a couple of times a month since 2013 after she moved to Carp from Old Ottawa East to be closer to her mother in Almonte.

Like Jaik, Dunn said McLeod has made all the difference for the customers who have come to rely on the free service.

“I think he’s a wonderful person,” she said. “He’s always very attentive. He never pulls away from a stop until he knows the passenger is seated. It’s a safety consideration, regardless of your age.”

He also asks his passengers whether they plan to catch a return trip home in the afternoon.

“It was always important for him to check how many passengers came in and how many were going home,” she said.

With his attentiveness and longtime driving experience, McLeod has helped many seniors maintain their independence.

“You’re putting your trust in someone who is obviously very capable and has an excellent driving record,” Dunn said.

The connection he has with his rural riders, whom he shuttles to the St. Laurent, Carlingwood and Billings Bridge shopping centres, has been a big ingredient of McLeod’s job satisfaction.

“I’ve been told many times I am their lifeline,” McLeod said, adding it feels “pretty good knowing I’m doing something for them that without me — not to say they couldn’t survive — but it would be more difficult for them.”

With retirement fast approaching, the 67-year-old plans to continue researching shipwrecks. He’s also a genealogy buff, and has traced his own family history back to 1780. He’s become known for historical research focusing on Ottawa and the Valley, and it’s not unusual when he receives requests from people trying to fill in the blanks. McLeod would also like to find the remains of a ship called the Iceberg that was built in Kingston and launched in 1857 with the goal of sailing north to find Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin.

“I think I’m going to be even busier. I love doing research. I love mysteries,” he said, though he will miss his rural routes and the passengers, many of whom he knows by name.

“I’ve really grown to love this work, but everything has to come to an end.”

Andrew Sedmihradsky and his six-year-old son Max received one from Mother Nature and a second from the University of Ottawa’s faculty of medicine after they travelled on their cargo bike from their home in Hamilton to Ottawa June 4 to 12.

Their goal is to shine a spotlight on Duchenne, the most common form of muscular dystrophy, affecting about one in 3,600 boys. Max was born with the condition that is caused by genetic mutations that lead to progressive muscle weakness and degeneration, which can prove fatal.

“When I found out about Duchenne, I’d never heard of it before, and I imagine a lot of other people are in the same boat,” Sedmihradsky said during a stop at the uOttawa faculty’s Roger Guindon Hall on Smyth Road on June 12, just before he and his son continued on to their final destination at Parliament Hill.

With every kilometre of their annual ride, the pair hoped to raise aware-

ness as well as funds for research, some of which is happening in Ottawa.

In fact, Ottawa is the home base for almost 60 neuromuscular scientists and physicians, the largest group in Canada, and one of the largest in the world.

And it is already home to the University of Ottawa’s Centre for Neuromuscular Disease, which formed in 1999.

There are now plans to open a new Ottawa Hospital Neuromuscular Research Centre at the Civic campus by December 2017. The $1-million facility will be the only one of its kind in the country, bringing together neuromuscular specialists under one roof “for faster care, faster diagnosis,” said Dr. Jodi Warman Chardon, a neurologist and co-director of uOttawa’s Centre for Neuromuscular Disease.

“It’s going to be a gamechanger for patients with neuromuscular disease, like Duchenne,” she said.

It will feature a diagnostic testing unit so that blood, skin and muscle samples can be taken from patients diagnosed with one of the more than 200 neuromuscular diseases “that affect the spinal cord out,” said Warman Chardon.

It will act as an equitable single fare option for low-income residents who need to take the bus. This is the next logical step following the success of the “EquiPass”, which was launched in early March, attracting over 2300 low-income residents to sign up for affordable public transit.

Intimidation won’t silence media

A

group of disgruntled city councillors in Brampton, Ont., seem to be confusing freedom of the press with freedom from the press.

Angry with recent coverage by the local newspaper, some councillors are proposing a motion to scrutinize the media’s questioning of elected officials. It’s a thinly veiled attempt to intimidate reporters. The motion calls for all media inquiries to be posted on the city website along with provided responses. Further, councillors want future meeting agendas to include time to respond to media coverage.

Meanwhile, at least one member of Brampton council has also taken to Twitter, suggesting the local paper isn’t providing “real news.” This is all in reaction to assertive reporting that is critical of the city’s leadership.

Councillors say they have put the press on notice.

Such a statement demonstrates a blatant disregard for, or ignorance of, the checks and balances already strongly entrenched in the Canadian media system.

Accountability starts with the news outlet itself.

Complaints can be made directly to a journalist, editor or publisher.

If the response is unsatisfactory, individuals can contact the press council. The National NewsMedia Council deals

with matters concerning fairness of coverage, relevance, balance and accuracy. Its members (including this newspaper) abide by its decisions. It’s a free and open process for the public.

When media make a mistake, we own it very publicly.

That’s not something everyone can say.

And there is the law. Canada has very strict libel laws.

These laws protect the reputation of individuals and organizations from false and derogatory remarks. Media are bound by these laws.

These councillors forget that media are not accountable to elected officials. Media are accountable to the public, the same group whose money these councillors are spending.

Ultimately this is about control. Councillors are trying to stifle critical voices and control our free, independent and responsible media.

That’s a scary development. It won’t work.

Metroland is putting Brampton’s elected officials on notice: media will not be intimidated by these thinly disguised bullying tactics.

Former U.S. embassy building should be put to good use

I

f you’ve lived in Ottawa for a long time, you will have a predictable reaction to reports that something will finally happen at the old U.S. Embassy on Wellington Street.

About time, you will say.

Indeed. That’s a beautiful building and it is a shame that it has sat empty and unused so long. By the time something is put there it will have been at least 20 years since it was last occupied. It has been neglected for so many years that you would think it was on LeBreton Flats.

One of the benefits of finding a use for the former embassy is that it will bring another historical attraction to what used to be known as Confederation Boulevard, another attraction to walk to.

Ottawa, as we know, has many fine museums and other structures, including the Parliament Buildings,

CHARLES GORDON Funny Town reflecting our history and culture.

They are spread out a bit — from the War Museum in LeBreton Flats, to the Museum of History in Gatineau (with side trips to the Museum of Nature down O’Connor Street and the Science Museum on St. Laurent).

What we’ve always needed is something resembling Washington’s National Mall — that walkable collection of museums and historical buildings stretching from the Lincoln Monument to Capitol Hill. Adding another attraction across the street from Parliament Hill will help.

You might also welcome reports

that the former U.S. embassy building will become a centre for indigenous peoples. That’s a good use. In a day when there is an intense and overdue focus on Canada’s indigenous peoples and culture, it is fitting that a prominent place be given to that.

The Canadian Press report on the government’s plans for the building notes that consultations are underway with indigenous communities on the best possible uses of the space. Do they even want it? It would be interesting to listen in on those consultations.

You wonder, for example, if indigenous communities, while grateful for the offer, might wonder what a 1930s Beaux-Arts style building historically associated with the government of the United States has to do with them.

You could imagine somebody asking the government whether it might, since it is committed to indigenous

Adventures in language training

wenty years ago, I lived in Jonquiere, Que. for five weeks.

I was coming off the end of my first year of university, where I had taken a debutant (beginner) oral French course.

“Tu manges?” the wiry, old French professor would ask. “Oui, je mange,” I would respond diligently.

“Tu fumes?” “Non, je ne fume pas.” “Ou est la bibliotheque?” “Repetez, s’il vous plait.”

It went on like this for two hours, twice weekly, for four months. At the end of my time, I felt I needed to take my French to the next level. So, I applied for a federal bursary and off I went on a great adventure to be immersed in rural Quebec culture for five weeks.

It was difficult to study a language. We had full-time classes at the local CEGEP, evening activities, and weekend cultural excursions. We were

I’m not surprised, really. I recall looking at the test screen and getting all blurry-eyed when I tried to recognize the variations of the pronoun “vous.” I couldn’t remember if “en” or “y” should be in the sentence where it was placed.

Suddenly faced with a time limit, I wasn’t sure if the verbs I was looking at were conjugated in the future, past, or imperfect tense.

All my studying of the recent week blended together in a big mushy cloud of nonsensical pig Latin. The clock was ticking and I was imagining the days when my friends and I used to add “ay” to every word, thinking we’d invented a language that our parents couldn’t comprehend.

In the past, the failure may have been a discouragement.

But, buoyed by my stunning success with oral French and comprehension, it’s actually only made me more determined.

I know from experience that writing is one of the most

difficult tasks for humans. It requires not only a complex familiarity with the rules of language, but also a lot of practice. The only way to achieve an advanced level is to study and play with words and apply the knowledge to achieve success, and, every once in a while, failure.

I’m determined to persist.

Studying French is difficult and frustrating at times, but it’s also fun. It’s opened up an entirely new world of humour and nuance that has flown under my radar for years.

And, at the end of the day, as I stretch my vocabulary and play with the written word in French, it’s my hope to apply that in English. I find myself rediscovering words in English, like “cumbersome,” “banal,” “manifest,” and even “hope.”

We Anglophones like to complain heartily about the restrictions of bilingualism, particularly in Ottawa.

But, if we open ourselves up to it (and get past those studyinduced migraines), learning another language can be one of the most enriching and rewarding experiences of our lives.

‘Open science is freedom’: genomics consortium receives $33M Funding will help fuel discoveries at CHEO, researcher says

It’s the shape of a scribble, but mapped out in its three-dimensional form it will allow Izabella Pena to figure out which drug compounds will stick to it in the hopes of preventing it from causing epileptic seizures.

Pena discovered the human protein’s three-dimensional structure when she worked at a Structural Genomics Consortium sister centre in Brazil.

The Canadian-led international public-private partnership conducts research into the structures of human proteins and publicly releases the work for free.

Over the past two years, Pena has been working at the CHEO-based national Care for Rare disease program, which is home to a large database of donated patient skin cells that can be tested to figure out how a drug might adhere to a protein and interact with it.

“I’m trying to see if I can block this protein, so hopefully I can cure this epilepsy,” Pena said of pyrodoxine-dependent epilepsy, a rare disease that causes a vitamin B6 deficiency

in patients.

The ultimate goal is to develop a human clinical trial, and improve the lives of patients.

She applauded the news on June 12 that $33 million is being invested into the Structural Genomics Consortium to fuel research that is made publicly available to researchers around the world. The hope is this will lead to the quicker discovery of cures and treatments for such illnesses as cancer, ALS, Huntington’s disease, malaria and tuberculosis.

The announcement was made at the CHEO lab by federal Science Minister Kirsty Duncan, Reza Moridi, provincial minister of research, innovation and science, Marc LePage, chief executive of Genome Canada; and Ottawa South MP David McGuinty.

The funding includes $11 million from the federal government’s 2016 budget over the next four years, $5 million from the Ontario government over five years, and $17 million from the pharmaceutical industry.

While 95 per cent of the funds will go directly to the consortium’s University of Toronto-based centre, with the remainder directed to other academic institutes, the money will indirectly benefit other centres, such as the CHEO-based lab.

“The traditional model is we get our funding, we do our research in our lab, we submit a paper on it, we publish it, and only then would the CHEO people see it,” said Cheryl Arrowsmith, chief scientist for the consortium’s Toronto labs and a U of T medical biophysics professor.

Instead, the consortium files the research results in public databases and actively seeks out centres, such as CHEO, so that researchers can advance the findings.

The organization provides timely access for free.

“We can have the information on which drugs or which compounds have the potential to bind and inhibit a certain protein,” Pena said, adding that this information is often patented. “Usually, pharmaceutical companies do drug screens, but don’t reveal the information.”

That means research labs, universities and hospitals can’t access that discovery until the drug trials are completed and

“But who knows if that inhibition of that specific protein also helps another disease they’re not studying?” said Pena. “Open science is freedom from this isolation and it helps

all the research labs and universities and hospitals to speed the research.”

For that reason, more than 25 clinical trials are underway thanks to the 2004-established consortium’s open science

mandate.

“Drug discovery is so hard, it’s really, really hard,” Arrowsmith said. “Everybody just needs more information about diseases and tools to study them.”

Herongate ‘desire line’ to be paved

A little piece of urban paradise will be paved in Herongate this year.

A high-traffic but unofficial pedestrian pathway through Sandalwood Park will undergo a makeover, possibly by the end of September.

“We’re really happy that the pathway paving has been committed to, because initially it didn’t seem like there was the level of support needed to see it happen, ” said Trevor Haché, vice-president of the Healthy Transportation Coalition.

“With all the redevelopment in the area, it actually makes a lot

of sense,” said Kevin Wherry, the city’s manager of parks and facilities planning.

Alta Vista Coun. Jean Cloutier had initially indicated there wasn’t enough money in the city’s budget to get the 200-metre pathway made over in 2017.

But he, along with the coalition and city staff, worked collaboratively to add the path to the to-do list sooner rather than later, Haché said.

The need was identified in recent years when the coalition began working in Herongate, a triangle-shaped neighbourhood sandwiched between Walkley and Heron roads.

The pathway is little more than a well-worn shortcut through the

large city-owned park. It’s uneven and water pools in the pockmarked earth when it rains.

“Many people who use a wheelchair to get around to do their daily activities had told us when they used the path, often times they almost tip over on it,” Haché said. “But because it’s a direct route, they tend to use it.”

For that reason, people with accessibility challenges, seniors, parents with strollers, cyclists and shoppers carrying bags of groceries will benefit from the upcoming pathway’s overhaul, Haché noted.

The paving is coming at an ideal time with the upcoming construction of three apartment buildings on the north side of the park, which means the area will

see an influx of hundreds of new tenants.

“The potential use of that path will be increasing, so it’s good that this improvement is being made in advance of that,” said Haché.

Trinity Group, which owned the nearby shopping area until earlier this year, was willing to share the paving price tag, estimated at $15,000 to $20,000.

“We’re all in support because personally I like to see people walking to destinations as much as possible instead of driving,” Wherry said.

“To formalize it with asphalt is really the most sound way to go forward.”

Week In Review!

Around the Ward The past weekend was a whirlwind tour of the Ward with stopping into all the Villages in one day! Vernon started the day with their garage sales; Fries for Charity to help the #2951 Cadets with their trip to Vimy; church bake sales and a stop into the Osgoode Township Museum to sign the commemorative Ottawa 2017 Banner. Into Metcalfe, a quick visit to the Farmers’ Market and Lions canteen ended with a stop at a two Lemonade Stands. Off to Greely next for the Parkway Pentecostal Church block party that included a free bbq, car wash, free yard sale, petting zoo, bouncy castle, face painting and so much more! One more stop to another Lemonade stand on the way out of Greely kept me going till the next Village stop. Up to Osgoode where I was hosting my own free bbq with the help of volunteers. Visitors enjoyed balloon twisting, mini horses, and firefighters once again grilling up a storm!

One last stop was at Carleton Mushroom farm where I greeted a bus load of visiting Mayors and Councillors from across Canada. They were in town for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Conference and Trade Show which I attended as well for the rest of the weekend. It was one of the busiest weekends and it went by very fast!

Shroomfest Beneficiaries The Annual Shroomfest fundraiser that gives the money back to the Community handed out the numerous cheques this week to representatives from several groups totaling $45,450 for this year!!

Some of groups present to receive cheques were: ROSSS, Metcalfe Care Centre, Agricultural, Lions Club, Recreational Centre, Curling Club, Jets hockey, Girl Guides, and Scouts. Other groups such as O-YA, GCA, MCA, Just Kiddin Theatre, Dreams Take Flight, and Osgoode Township Museum. There were 27 organizations in total that benefited from the Shroomfest event. What a great way to give back to the groups that can really use financial help! Many thanks to the committee and all the volunteers that make this happen each year.

Paramedics plugging into high-tech upgrade Diane Deans Councillor/Conseillère Quartier Gloucester-Southgate Ward O-Train Trillium Line Maintenance Work From June 17 until June 30 the O-Train Trillium Line service will be temporarily replaced by bus route #107 in order to facilitate planned maintenance activities, including the replacement of Carleton Station’s track switches and other associated equipment. OC Transpo is doing this work during the summer to minimize the impact to customers.

During the temporary service adjustments, bus route #107 will provide service parallel to the Trillium Line and will operate every 15 minutes. The Ottawa-based paramedic dispatch centre will receive a high-tech upgrade next year that will better triage 911 calls and ensure the most urgent patient cases are prioritized, complementing a proposed plan to allow paramedics to transport non-urgent cases to community health centres.

The new advanced medical priority dispatch system will replace Ottawa’s current technology next spring, part of a provincially funded $10-million overhaul that will roll out over two years at 13 communications centres across Ontario beginning in March 2018. That price tag includes training.

“I think it’s the responsible thing to do to look at the Ambulance Act and update the dispatch system and let’s try to serve people better, and use our resources as best we can,” said Ottawa South MPP John Fraser, who made the announcement on June 6 at the Ottawa Paramedic Service headquarters, which is also home base for the regional communications centre.

Fraser hopes Ottawa will receive its dispatch upgrade next spring, allowing the 60-member team to better prioritize 911 calls by allowing dispatchers to plug more patient information into the computerized system.

That will make all the difference during a “seconds-count call,” said Andrew Orchard, the centre’s operations commander.

That means during busy periods dispatchers can ensure ambulances are properly distributed and deployed.

“The more details we have ... that just helps us get the right resource to the right patient at the right time,” Orchard said.

Ottawa paramedics respond to more than 135,000 calls each year. And while paramedics respond with lights and sirens to 70 per cent of calls, just 30 per cent of trips to hospital actually required this level of urgency.

“If we can see that at the very beginning of the call, (and) not have to race to the call 70 per cent of the time, that would create a lot of efficiency in your system design,” said Peter Kelly, acting chief of the Ottawa Paramedic Service. “We wouldn’t have a lot of ambulances rush to a scene unnecessarily.”

Rushing brings added risk to patients and paramedics, said Marc-Antoine Deschamps, Ottawa paramedic spokesperson.

The new system will also give dispatchers more flexibility to deploy a lone paramedic in a rapid-response car. They can treat patients at a scene, and assess whether the patient needs to be transported to hospital.

“We’re one of the first to do that as well — our rapid response unit is a single paramedic in a vehicle to stop the clock,” Kelly said.

The upgrade will complement the province’s plan to allow paramedics to bypass busy hospital emergency rooms and transport or redirect non-urgent patients to community-based urgent care clinics, family doctors and mental-health centres.

To do that, the government will introduce changes to the Ambulance Act this fall, to ease emergency department overcrowding and cut wait times.

“Those people will get access to the care that they need, likely more quickly,” Fraser said, because they won’t have to wait in an ER where they compete with more urgent cases.

“It’s about the patient. Getting the patient to the most appropriate care in a timely fashion is what it’s all about here.”

Fraser cited the example of a targeted engagement diversion pilot project in Ottawa that already allows police officers and paramedics to transport homeless patients to a specialized community clinic instead of a hospital.

As well, there is already a community paramedicine program in place in West Carleton and Renfrew County. In West Carleton, three Ottawa paramedics make scheduled weekday house calls, Deschamps confirmed.

“They serve as an extra set of eyes and ears,” Fraser said, providing a link to primary care providers. “It’s just another tool.”

Diverting patients from hospital ERs could also lead to chang-

es in community care, such as extended hours, Fraser said.

But, Fred Hahn, president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees in Ontario, which represents about 6,000 paramedics and dispatchers in the province, said in a statement that under the proposed model, patients would be diverted to already stressed health-care professionals at community clinics.

“Known as ‘treat and refer,’ this model would divert patients into cheaper forms of health care in the community,” Michael Hurley, president of CUPE’s Ontario council of hospital unions, said in the statement.

‘FIREMEDICS’

The province also wants to change the Ambulance Act to launch pilot projects in two municipalities to allow firefighters certified as paramedics to respond to 911 calls to treat, release or refer non-urgent patients, as well as provide “symptom relief” to acute patients, according to the provincial government.

“I think the firemedic would be more driven towards urgent calls, calls that are higher on the triage level,” Fraser said, adding the pilots will determine whether that tool will be effective for patients.

Still in development, Kelly said he and Ottawa Fire Chief Gerry Pingitore plan to assess that initiative when more details are released.

CUPE is equally critical of this plan to “put paramedics on fire trucks.”

“To improve response times, what’s needed is increasing the capacity of ambulance services to put more paramedics on the road,” Hahn said.

The plan is for discussions to begin with RioCan, which bought the plaza. The city is also willing to dip into its minor park improvement fund.

“Considering the small value, I don’t think it would be a problem for the parties to share,” Wherry said.

The coalition staged pop-up improvements to the park last August to give people attending a neighbourhood fun day an idea of what their wish list items would actually look like.

Heavy duty mats were temporarily laid down along the dirt path connecting homes and the Herongate shopping plaza, and solar lights were installed along its borders.

“The initial goal was to give people a sense on that day … what their neighbourhood would look like and how their lives would improve if that temporary improvement were made permanent, and give people the sense to reimagine their neighbourhood for that day,” Haché said.

day, which showed support for both the pathway paving and lighting.

Staff have not yet decided whether the path will be cleared of snow in the winter, but Wherry said he expects plowing will be the desired option.

A question mark also hangs over the lighting request, though it’s hoped that could be installed to boost safety for residents.

“Many of those businesses that people are walking to and from are open late,” Haché said.

While lighting can’t be added this year because funding isn’t available, the Sandalwood path may be a strong contender for 2018 since residents use it after dark to get to shops at the plaza.

Therefore, a strong case could be made for Sandalwood to receive pathway lighting, Wherry confirmed.

“We light when it’s appropriate to do so from either a crime prevention perspective (or to create) community connections,” he said.

Such requests can be made by residents, councillors and organizations.

“If requests come in, it would certainly be put on our list for consideration and we review all of those requests when money comes available for implementa-

Buying from a PLAN? Proceed carefully when buying a property from a plan Has a residential property development project caught your eye, and you’d love to buy one of the models?

Everything seems right: the location, surroundings, materials, size of rooms and price. But be cautious about signing a pre-purchase contract based on a plan. You need to check a lot of details before buying a property that you’ve never laid eyes on.

Preparation time: 20 minutes INSTRUCTIONS Cooking time: about two minutes Preheat barbecue on medium Grilling time: 25 minutes heat for 15 minutes to 350°F Serves eight (180°C). Turn off one side of barbecue for indirect heat.

Meanwhile, in medium sauce• ¼ cup (50 mL) butter • 2 squares unsweetened choc- pan over low heat, melt butter olate (1 oz/28 g each), chopped and chocolate, stirring until • 2/3 cup (150 mL) granulated smooth. Remove from heat.

“I can take such good care of my patients in the clinic and basic scientists can do fantastic work in the lab, but

really what we need is something that will help overlap between the both of them,” Warman Chardon said.

“It’s going to allow us as clinicians to help the basic scientists find the cures for tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, Max is currently taking steroids and an

experimental medication in an effort to slow down Duchenne.

“At this point, barring a cure – which is what we want – he seems to be holding steady,” Sedmihradsky said. “He’s not deteriorating, which is a positive thing.”

Molasses held many uses and many memories

ou could smell molasses at Briscoe’s General Store, once you got by the row of cookies in their tilted boxes at the front. There was no attempt made to shut out the smells that filled the store, and coal oil, rubber boots, maple cookies, rolls of yard goods, and of course, molasses aromas met you as soon as you opened the door.

Mother didn’t want molasses that day. I would still head to the back of the store, where a pail sat on a narrow bench, with a tin ladle resting on a chipped saucer, where customers could fill little honey pails with as much molasses as they needed. And if no one was looking, I would run my finger onto the saucer, capturing some that had stayed with the ladle used by the last customer.

Of course, molasses filled all sorts of purposes at home.

Molasses went into muffins and cookies and was drizzled over bread pudding. A special treat for me was when Mother was using molasses in one of her many dishes, and I was allowed to lick the spoon. At a time when there was little money for special treats like store-bought ice cream, or even a box of Cracker Jacks, we could always count on a taste of molasses to take the sting out of those lean years, called The Depression.

Canada’s 1st VR escape room sets up in south Ottawa

You look down at your shackled wrists, the long chains stretching up to the ceiling.

But the keys to temporary freedom are within reach and in seconds, you’re free — free to roam and unlock the mysteries within a haunted mansion.

There is a big catch, however, as you discover you have been imprisoned as a ghost with the ability to zip lightning-fast across the spacious rooms, tasked with the mission of solving the secrets within the unnerving domain.

This virtual reality experience is the first game of its kind to be launched under the Breakscape Games banner, a new virtual reality startup that officially launched June 9 by Qi Hu, Alex Wong and Ramsay Jackson.

“It’s definitely the biggest and most ambitious project we’ve done for Room Escape so far,” said Hu. “We started this company together to bring the escape room aspect to VR and have it be multiplayer and be social,” Wong said.

The creators behind Archery Games (archery tag) and Room Escape Ottawa, both located at 1860 Bank St. in south Ottawa, were looking to enhance their escape room business by adding a virtual reality component for ages 13 and up at a cost of $29 for an hour of interactive play.

“There’s just so many cool things in VR that we can’t do in an escape room,” Hu said.

But what they found on the market was “very early, very raw” and so they decided to develop their own content for a wide range of businesses, including entertainment companies such as their own Room Escape Ottawa and even theme parks.

The business partners first raised the capital locally, and then worked with software developers in London, Ont., who did the coding, sound and artwork.

The game was a year in the making, beginning with development and design over the first six months, followed by six months of coding, quality assurance and testing.

Together, they created a whole new gaming experience “from reality, in virtual reality,” said Hu. “Dreaming,” he said of what inspired them to blend the concept of escape rooms and VR tech. “And following the cool things that you want but don’t see.

“This is the first in Canada,” he said. “And there’s only a couple in the States with the game that we didn’t want to buy. So we’re really first in the world with this type of game.

“There’s ones that have a similar kind of concept but not the way that we did it. This is a brand new game,” said Hu, a former competitive gamer and Nortel tech expert.

Virtual reality gaming tends to be a single-player activity, but Breakscape is bringing teams of two to six people together in a room, where the seated players don wearable tech for a 100-percent immersive and interactive experience.

In addition to wearing goggles and holding high-tech joysticks, players will have headsets equipped with microphones so they can speak with one another as they work together to follow the clues and solve the puzzles inside the haunted mansion.

“They can wave at each other in VR, high-five each other,” Hu said. “It’s a pretty cool thing.”

And the makers have made sure that no matter the size of the team, everyone within the virtual world will need to play an equal role in decoding the puzzles.

“Any time you have brand new technology you have to be the best,” Hu said. “And you might not be the best for that long, because technology moves so fast, but right now we’re confident this is the best multiplayer VR game out there.”

The puzzles are slightly easier to solve than in one of the three real-world escape rooms at the Bank Street complex, largely because of the unique platform.

“It’s crazy being in there in the first place,” Hu said of the “DeComposed” VR-themed game.

“It’s a physically intense experience because you’re surrounded by your environment. Kind of like roller-coasters.”

Wong will also be plugged in as gamemaster to provide clues, if needed. And the first two minutes of the game offers a VR tutorial.

The creators want to develop more virtual games, and have made progress pre-selling the software to other gaming companies.

“That’s the goal of our new company, is to be the provider of cool content for this genre of entertainment,” said Hu. For details, visit breakscapegames.com.

Heatherington may become ‘vanguard’ of change

Change from the ground up is already percolating in Albion-Heatherington and Fairlea.

“In Heatherington, this process has been very driven from the community up,” said Gloucester-Southgate Coun.

She spearheaded the creation of the city’s Building Better Revitalized Neighbourhoods pilot project with the intention of bringing positive, community-driven change to the south Ottawa neighbourhood. With council’s approval, $250,000 was earmarked for the project to launch in Heatherington and Vanier South-Overbrook, beginning with extensive community consultation.

In Heatherington, almost 850 people have been contacted and a survey garnered 501 responses from residents

pitching ideas on how their community’s needs can be met.

A summary of the top priorities was expected to be presented to area stakeholders on June 15.

Next step will be to develop short-, medium- and longterm recommendations, which will go before council, possibly this fall.

But residents won’t have to wait that long for change to occur. The city’s first community kitchen is currently under construction and slated to open this fall at the Albion-

Heatherington Community Centre, a product of reaching out to area residents. More short-term changes will likely be announced this summer.

Some wish list items identified by local youth include adding Wi-Fi to the community centre.

“Those will be the kinds of quick things we could probably achieve really fast that would make a meaningful difference to a lot of people who live in the community,” Deans said, adding that other ideas include planting programs and better OC Transpo bus shelters.

Medium-term changes could become reality in two or three years. The time line for long-term change will depend on the recommendations identified.

Council will need to approve those, as well as the budget to finance them.

A key component of the revitalization project is a three-hectare vacant parcel of city-owned land at the corner of Walkley and Heatherington roads. Residents were asked for their ideas about that blank canvas.

“The city tried to sell it at one time and I blocked them from selling it because I recognize it’s hugely important to that community and the community’s future,” Deans said. “It’s clearly on the city’s radar.”

Given its size, there is the potential for multiple uses, perhaps some affordable housing.

“One of the things we’re hearing is there has to be a balance of options in the neighbourhood, not just affordable housing. There has to be a mix,” she said.

The Socialization of Fergus Home BASE F DIANA FISHER

ergus the Red does not like the heat.

He lurks around the house seeking out cool corners and air conditioning vents. He goes outside for a short time, then whines and begs at the door to be let back in. His favourite spot is the basement, because it is always cold. But that is the cats’ lair, and he is not welcome there.

The pup was ‘helping’ me with the gardening the other day and he got quite muddy so he needed a bath. He certainly is a water dog. He’s very suspicious of the hand-held shower nozzle but he loves the garden hose.

After I towelled him off he ran through the house like his hair was on fire. Then he crashed on a heap of stuffed animals and chew toys and fell asleep on his back, legs in the air. As he lay sleeping, the cats dared to tip toe through the room. Sammy sniffed the edge of his dog bed with a horrified look of disgust.

Despite my repeated introductions, the cats are not warming up to Fergus. I keep hoping they will get used to him but they may keep their distance until he gets past the chasing, chomping and chewing stage.

Fergus has had a few lessons in socialization lately. His best experience by far was with another Golden Retriever. At 10 months old, Chester is still pup enough to play but he is also very gentle and accommodating.

They played tug of war with a rope toy and Fergus just thought it was awesome. He has also met his Aunt Cathy’s Basset Hounds, Milo and Baxter. At just nine weeks of age, Fergus decided to mount Baxter. He was summarily dismissed.

Anastasia’s yellow Lab, Rupert adores Fergus. He runs and plays with the pup and puts up with all his shenanigans. Her German Pointer Skor, however, is a bit nervous around the puppy. The first time they met he flattened Fergus’ face into the ground with one paw.

The most traumatic meetand-greet for Fergus thus far was with Vitor, the German shepherd. When Vitor (who is very puppy-minded himself) grabbed the rope toy, Fergus probably thought: “Oh goody. He knows tug of war!” But Vitor was not interested in playing or sharing toys. He growled at the pup in warning. Fergus wasn’t taking no for an answer, and went in to nibble on Vitor’s muzzle. That

The yelping that ensued was like nothing I have ever heard before. Fergus took off across the yard, his tail between his legs, ears flattened and wounded eye clamped shut. He could barely see where he was going but eventually he slammed into my legs and leaped up into my open arms. Then he whimpered and shivered and moaned for the next 10 minutes. We got him to open his eye and proved to him that he could actually see. He hadn’t been hurt — just fright-

ened to within an inch of his life.

He quieted down, then someone said something in a kind voice and he started yelping again.

After he calmed down, we got Vitor to come over and apologize. They touched noises and the little dog shivered with a big sigh.

We decided it would be better to put Fergus in the house during dinner. We were just settling in to eat when I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. The dog had gone upstairs to find something comforting to nap with. He decided on a pair

of my underwear and one of the Farmer’s socks. He was en route to his den/crate when I spotted him from my vantage point in the kitchen. I didn’t want him to shred my underthings but after what he had been through I figured he deserved some sort of creature comfort. I peeked around the corner and saw that he was curled up in a nest of toys and stolen items, his eyes already closed. The adrenalin rush had knocked him out. I closed the latch on the crate and pulled his curtain down so he could rest.

After dinner we heard Fergus whimpering to be let out of his crate. He slowly stretched and strutted out onto the back porch, where he suddenly sat down and looked out over the yard. It was as if he were remembering the traumatic incident as he surveyed the scene of the crime. He is a smart dog, and I think he has learned a valuable lesson.

Blurring the Line Traditionally, the Ottawa Humane Society and most, if not all, humane societies had a pretty deep “line in the sand” between “owned” animals and those that were homeless. That is, the message to owners was that they are responsible for their pet — period.

About fifteen years ago, the OHS started to relax some of its views, in particular on the issue of euthanasia. The OHS used to say people should see their veterinarian for this final act of kindness. But the number of calls regarding the urgent need for euthanasia began to increase, with desperate and cash-strapped families telling saying they had been quoted in the many hundreds of dollars, a euthanasia they simply could not afford.

So, now the OHS will perform needed euthanasia, for a fee that is affordable in situations where an animal is likely to suffer otherwise.
