News – Residents are hoping to see a new elementary school in Findlay Creek pushed to the top of the Ottawa Carleton District School Board’s capital priorities list. The Ottawa public school board met on Tuesday evening to go over its list of capital priorities. Community association representative Sumana Jana continues to rally area parents to support the need for a new public school in the area. “Staff are going to recommend reverting back to the 2012 list, so Findlay Creek will be ďŹ fth out of eight projects,â€? she said to the association in a letter. “However, there will also be an added recommendation to seek the board’s approval to write a letter from the chair to seek urgent funding for this capital priority.â€? During the school board’s committee of the whole meeting on Sept. 17, trustees heard from area residents about capital projects they felt are important in their community. They’ll submit these priorities to the Ministry of Education at

the end of the month. Jana also had a discussion with trustee Mark Fisher. “I also had a long talk with him expressing the community’s disappointment, concerns and frustrations about this,â€? said Jana. “Mark has repeatedly told us that the list is not created as a priority one through eight – it’s a random list of all schools that require immediate funding and the board looks at each case on its own merit. The good news is that we are at number ďŹ ve, which is better than eight, and we are on the list, and we get a letter from the board chair that will strengthen our case.â€? MAKING THE LIST
However, the concern is that if the ministry decides to fund the projects based on the hierarchy of the list, there is a chance Findlay Creek won’t get the funding in January 2014. Representatives planned to attend the Oct. 1 school board meeting to state their case. “We can’t change the list at this point, however we need to state how dire the situation is here and since there is no plan B, we must have the board and ministry’s support to get the appropriate funding to secure the school for 2015.â€? According to a report on the Findlay Creek Community Association website, the number of students at Steve McLean Public School on Spratt Road is at 90 per cent capacity. There has also been a 40 per cent increase in the school’s population over the past two years due to the inux of development. See BILLIONS, page 7
