THE WEDGE

DLR GROUP PRIZE FINALIST

The Wedge is a multi-purpose museum dedicated to wondering, educating, design, growth, and the environment. From the two gallery spaces and fabrication lab flex spaces, The Wedge provides an opportunity to explore our roles as individuals and humankind within the context of nature.

Located in Lincoln Park, Chicago, The Wedge explores how subtle architectural moves can manipulate an experience and provoke deep reflection concerning the city’s history of environmental inequity. While Lincoln Park was created for people to enjoy nature within the context of the city, the introduction of greenery subsequently increased property values and forced out low-income residents.

The Wedge brings awareness to the effects of gentrification and redlining by facilitating a low-barrier museum that celebrates access. Museum guests move through the building, constantly wandering on the edge of the secret moss garden, a space where nature dominates, and people reflect on their environmental impact. The hidden moss garden is reminiscent of redlining in Chicago as it drove a wedge between communities and enabled obscure social, political, and economic injustices. Much like redlining, the Wedge is not fully understood until it is experienced. Visitors ascending the ramping galleries that wrap the outdoor area are curious how to access the moss garden. Overall, The Wedge is not only a place for people to understand their growth alongside nature and art but also provides commentary on how important this access and relationship is as we continue to grow.

LINEARITY

ROME PROGRAM - IOWA STATE STUDY ABROAD

San Lorenzo, a neighborhood constructed in the early twentieth century as housing for the working class, remains a vibrant community full of artisans, students, workers, and families. The site is currently occupied by unauthorized private enterprises and housing, stripping San Lorenzo of public space that the community could use

Linearity gives the land back to the public by providing parkscape, community space, and increased housing for the local community. To provide the community with as much public space as possible, the figure-ground is oriented to the south of the site to open the public greenscape and piazza space to the greater San Lorenzo community. The bar composition came from studying projection lines from the surrounding urban context. In doing so, the building acts as a landscape facade –a backdrop for urban activity– creating a separation of the open space from the noise of the railway south of the site. The mass’ monolithic stature acts as a barrier from unattractive attributes surrounding the site, but with special attention to porosity on the ground level, the building connects to the greater urban fabric.

Creating a community center and housing facility for students, young families, and other professionals in the area gives the site back its youthfulness and camaraderie. This project not only aims to give the land back to the people of San Lorenzo, but give the community a space to grow and gather.

TALL PINES MEDICAL CENTER

ACHA STUDENT COMPETITION FIRST PLACE

SUBSTANCE DESIGN COMPETITION FIRST PLACE

There is no deviation of mind and body; if one is afflicted both suffer… True health is found in harmony

Hualapai Nation, which translates to People of the Tall Pines, is a community thatgrapples with a profound mental health crisis. Acts of violence, substance abuse, and suicide grip the minds of the community. The lack of social support and out reach makes it difficult for locals to get preventative and rehabilitative care. Reconnecting people with social services and reviving the community will be critical to their future.

Recognizing the diverse means and methods of mental healthcare across cultural and geographical spectrums, the hospital must offer a range of treatment options varying in severity. By providing group help sessions, individual treatment options, and short-term inpatient care and rehabilitation, the needs of the community can be properly supported. Through these services, treatment options can be uniquely tailored because holistic health must be adaptable.

Reengaging the community is the only way to reverse the mental health trends in the region. By providing inspiring experiences, educational sessions, and events, the hospital will help curve the downward health trends of the region. Tall Pines must offer a greater service that goes beyond the instantaneous care of patients; it must aim to reverse the mental health crisis, not simply treat it.
