AA Visiting School Madrid 2003 - UEM (European University of Madrid) TRANS-COMPUTATIONAL MEMBRANES
Under the name, Trans-Computational Membranes, the Architectural Association Visiting School Madrid challenges the conception of flexibility within the context of spatial re-adaptation. During the 2013 School, new computational methods were utilised to rethink membrane structures from the micro to macro, resulting in a plethora of habitable prototypes. Students were involved in a continuous dialogue between analog and digital experimentation, where material processes and fabrication techniques are incorporated within a digital working methodology, analysing material behaviour from nano-scale patterns to the production of physical 1-to-1 scale prototypes. Generative design workshops took place throughout the programme, aiming at digital fabrication of textile structures though the use of physical simulations. Parallel to their research development, students collaborated in the fabrication of a full scale membrane-based pavilion which investigated reconfiguration as a response to rapid fluctuations to todays specific needs. A lecture series was developed in parallel to the studio-based research. Renowned speakers addressed topics relating to dynamic architectural models, adaptive systems and patterning experimentation for spatial deployment. The event was developed in coordination with Universidad Europea and was hosted in the Official College of Architects (COAM) which sponsored the programme together with Actíu, Philips,Volumaniac and the British Embassy Madrid.

MANUEL JIMENEZ GARCIA - AA PROGRAMME COORDINATOR - STUDIO MASTER
Manuel Jimenez Garcia is currently Course Tutor at ‘Architectural Association Design Research Lab (DRL)‘ (London), where he develops his research in self-organization and material computation; he is also Unit Tutor at Diploma 18 at ‘The Bartlett School of Architecture’ and Programme Director at the AA Visiting School Madrid. He has taught and run workshops at ‘Polytechnic University of Architecture’ (Madrid), ‘European University Madrid’ and ‘L’École Spéciale d’Architecture’ (Paris). Manuel graduated in Architecture from the European University of Madrid, he holds a masters in Architecture (AA DRL) from ‘Architectural Association’ and a masters in Design and Computer modeling from ‘CICE new technologies professional school’ He has worked as an architect for the offices of ‘Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners’, ‘Minimaforms’, ‘Amid(cero9)’ and ‘Naja & deOstos’, participating actively in multiple international recognized projects. Manuel Jimenez is a registered Architect at the ARB Architects Registration Board. He is the co-founder of Ctrl+M and madMdesign, an architecture practice based in London. His work has been featured widely in ‘Acadia 2012‘ (San Francisco), ‘Royal Academy Summer Exhibition‘ (London), ‘X Bienal Española de Arquitectura’ (Spain), and ‘Rethinking the Human in Technology Driven Architecture 2011‘ (Crete).

JOSE LUIS ESTEBAN PENELAS - UEM LOCAL COORDINATOR - STUDIO MASTER
José Luis Esteban Penelas is an Architect and Urban Designer at the School of Architecture, Polytechnic University of Madrid; Ph.D. Doctored at the European School of Architecture, European University of Madrid; obtained the Grant for Research towards a Doctorate in Architecture in the Department of Architectural Projects at the Polytechnic School of Architecture (1986-1989). Has been Professor at the School of Architecture of Madrid , Polytechnic University (1989-2002); has been Architect Director of Projects and Urban Design of Madrid Council (1989-1998). In 1992 he established his own office of Architecture and Urbanism in Madrid (Spain), “PENELAS ARCHITECTS”. His projects and his work have been internationally published, having received numerous national and international awards. He has been lecturing and attending juries worldwide (Barcelona, Seville, Madrid,Valencia, Beijing, Seoul, Tongji University Shanghai, Tsing Hua University Beijing, Berlin, Bogotá, Genoa, Paris, Milan, Trento, London, USA , Mexico, among others). Author of numerous books, writings and articles; highlighting "Architectures XXI Century" (2007), "Building the Future City” (2009) and "Super-places. Inter-media spaces" (2007). He is presently Chair Professor of Architectonics Projects at the School of Architecture (European University of Madrid) (1998-20012) and Professor at the Master of Landscape of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (1989-2007). Founder and director of the investigation Group AIR LAB (Advanced Architecture International Research Laboratory) of the European University. ROBERTO GARCIA VELEZ - STUDIO MASTER
Roberto Garcia Velez is graduated in Architecture from the European University of Madrid (UEM) and he holds a master in Architecture and Urbanism from the Architectural Association (AADRL), London. PhD candidate at the Polytechnic University of Alicante (UA), focus on self-organization and material computation. Roberto Garcia Velez is currently associate at RGN Architecture Office leading projects in different countries such us Uruguay, Venezuela, Azerbaijan, Argelia, Guinea-Bissau, and United Kingdom. He is co-founder of Ctrl+M and lof design, an architecture practice based in Spain. CHRIS PIERCE - AA VISITING SCHOOL DIRECTOR
Christopher Pierce studied at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and gained a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. Among his recent publications are essays on OMA, ‘From Bauhaus to Our House to Koolhaas: The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and Modern American Culture’; Cloud 9, ‘Seven-year Itch: Another Note from Empuriabrava; and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, ‘Threes a Crowd. He formed Mis-Architecture with Chris Matthews in 2000. He currently runs a diploma unit and is the visiting school director at the Architectural Association.

MARIA OLMOS ZUNICA - ASSISTANT TUTOR
Maria Olmos Zunica is Interior designer graduated from Polytechnic University of Architecture of Madrid. She holds a master course in Low-Cost hotels from Domus Academy in Milan and a Retail Design Master course from Central Saint Martins in London. She is currently Part II candidate at the Architecture at the Architectural Association of School of Architecture ( AA) in London. Maria has worked in architectural practices based in Spain and London, such as WilkinsonEyre and NaJa & deOstos, collaborating in international exhibitions and in architectural development. With some of her AA works she has won different competitions in Spain and she was nominated for New Talent Award in London in 2010. She is co-founder of madMdesign where she develops social-technology projects based on narrative context. Her work has been featured at Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2012 (London).

ANTONIO GUIJARRO - ASSISTANT TUTOR
Antonio Guijarro García (Madrid); Architect and Urban Designer at the School of Architecture, Polytechnic University of Madrid; He won the first prize in the competition for the design of a new urban space in Vallecas, Madrid (2001) and first prize for the design of a New Exhibition Space in Madrid´s Museum of Modern Art. He is member of Esteban Penelas Architects since 2007. He has participated in projects that have been internationally published, having received numerous national and international awards, and being exposed worldwide. He has been a professor at several international universities: Guest professor invited by the National University of Architecture Cheju (Jeju Island, South Korea), Student coordinator at Cheju National University of Architecture (category Social & Communication Arts) for the III Delphic Games, professor invited by the Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) of Architecture (Seoul, South Korea). Jury and sudent project professor for the Development of Buckhan neighborhood in Seoul and invited professor at the UDLA (Quito, Ecuador). He is currently working as Professor at the European University of Madrid (UEM) He is currently working as Co-Director and partner for Penelas Architects Office PAO He has also worked for the investigation group of the Architectonic Projects Department at the European School of Architecture (European University of Madrid).

VICENTE SOLER - ASSISTANT TUTOR
Vicente Soler graduated in Architecture from the European University of Madrid. He works and consults as a specialist in digital generative design modelling. He has worked with several offices, including Amid(cero9), participating in multiple internationally recognized projects. He has been a guest speaker on lectures at the University of San Sebastian, San Pablo CEU University and at the COAMU (Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Murcia). Since 2009 he runs a digital workshop that is part of the DIP 5 unit course at the AA School of Architecture. He was a teacher at the KIMU workshop at the University of San Sebastian and has been teaching the Grasshopper software at several academies and offices. He is the cofounder of the Spaceoid academy in Madrid that specializes in software for architectural design.

! ! SCHEDULE ! Day 1 Monday 16th of September 2013! General Introduction day in school. Introductory words by the representative of the UEM and the course director. Introduction of the first exercises by the course tutors, short presentation in computational tools and simulation methods. Formation of teams of students who will work together in the first phase of the workshop. Opening lecture by programme director and faculty, followed by drinks outdoors.!
Day 2 Tuesday 17th of September 2013! 10:00 and 01:00, students will be given computational tools classes, including Rhino and Grasshopper.! Group brainstorming about possible methods for membrane Architecture, followed up to first project development by each of the teams.! Team by team tutorials and technical support by the tutors during the entire working session in the afternoon.!
Day 3 Wednesday 18th of September 2013! 10:00 and 01:00, students will be given computational tools classes and personal tutorials by experts of each software, we will be focusing on modeling, aiming to get the first 3d models at the end of the day. The teams will choose its scale of operation so they continue with more support from one of the main tutors, specialized in the development of the scale they are interested in (from the nano-scale to Architecture scale to the Urban). Day 6/7/8/9 21st/22nd/23rd/24th of September 2013! Work session during the whole day, technical and conceptual support by tutors.! The deployment of a one to one textile pavilion will be running in parallel, the students will participate in that process in combination with their personal project, introducing new inputs in the pavilion development.! Small lectures by computational designers and artist will be taking place along the dates, introducing fresh ideas into the workflow of the teams. Students from the AA will also be showing their projects at the AA. Tutors will be available for discussion and support during the work sessions.! Lecture Series - Stephen Folley (Myaa). ! Generation of 3d prints and digital renderings of the teams proposals. We will commence the session showing representational tools and rendering techniques, follow up by the constant assistant by technical tutors during the whole session, aiming to get a professional look o f the ideas discussed during the workshop. We will set up the one to one membrane prototypes together with the textile pavilion to be used as a background for the final presentation.!
Day 10 26th of September 2013! Final presentation in one of the most iconic locations of Madrid (to be confirmed). Theodore Spyropulos (director of AADRL) will be guest critique, together with some of the most relevant spanish architects.! Diploma ceremony. Following the keynote lecture, every participant receive an AA diploma, certifying their participation in the workshop. Final dinner for guest critiques, students and tutors on a central outdoors location in Madrid.!

PAVILION FLEXIBLE PROTOTYPE
Trans-computational will challenge the way we conceive flexibility within the context of spatial re-adaptation as a driver for social change. Time-based dynamic systems will transform the digital– analogue divide through networks of instantaneous spatial deployment creating a symbiotic spatial context that examines new-era demands. The construction of a textile based pavilion will take place during the workshop. The focus will be to establish a first prototype of a larger operation, where computational techniques and the use of flexible materials make possible the creation of affordable inhabitable spaces, making use rapid deployment to facilitate the re-adaptation of the designed space responding to social necessities in an incredible short time-frame. The real scale prototype will aim to create a space where health is a particular feature as a way to respond to the demands of the 21st century, where the necessity of space fluctuates continuously. In a larger term it will establish the basic principles for a rapid reoccupation system, offering basic and temporal spaces to who really needs them and at the time frame that is being required. The pavilion will be design prior to the Workshop, however the construction will occur during the ten days, allowing the students to participate in the construction process as a short exercise, 1 or 2 days, within the Visiting School, helping to develop collaborative skills and responses to real life scenarios, coupled with the use of digital fabrication.
