The concept of material self-organization or ‘material agency’ has been discussed in modern science and philosophy in the context of non-linear evolutionary theories. Deleuze and Guattari argue that there are inherent morphogenetic capacities in all areas of life. They are challenging Aristoteles’ hylomorphic model claiming that Matter is active and dynamic, possessing self-organizing capacities enabling it to negotiate complex organizational patterns and continuously evolve through the interaction of its internal morphogenetic potentials and external environmental forces. In this context our research is based on the generative potential of material computation to inform the design process. Our material system investigates forming through machinic design operations on Matter. We set up an ‘abstract machine’ of design systems which return ‘formalized contents and expressions’. patterning techniques, including pressure points and connection types. Pouring points vary in number, location and height. Our folding technique allowing us to create a mould for any number of connected surfaces out of a continuous piece of Lycra.

casting system results in a high variation of unpredictable outcomes. While the interaction of the internal morphogenetic capacities of both plaster and Lycra and external environmental forces result in an innovation of formation that cannot be preconceived. In this sense, Matter and its self-organizational properties are used as an operative tool in the design process. The duality of the the individual surface and the connected poly surface is adding another level of complexity, in which interactions of material self-organization at the local level result in emergent behaviour at the global level.
