Emerald Smith Design Portfolio
Portfolio Case DESIGN STUDIO I Assignment: Design a portfolio case for carrying architectural drawings Durability and practicality are the two main qualities I incorporated into the design of my portfolio case. My investigation began with a design analysis of everyday things like handbags, wallets, or folders that fasten. I observed how they opened, closed, and even weighed. However, while I was solving a math problem one night, a simple mathematic symbol, the plus sign (+), sparked an idea. I created the case from there. As seen below, the four flaps open outward, making my drawings easy to take in and out. When folded inward, they stay in place. The full scaled19 ½ ” x 14 ½” case was constructed out of a recylced cardboard box. It was then measured, scored accordingly, and wrapped in a fancy, chocolate covered wallpaper. Leopard printed duct tape boarded the case’s edges for protection and added flare.

Meet Hexi DESIGN STUDIO I Assignment: Construct a stable chair using only four sheets of cardboard with neither glue nor tape She’s a chair with flair. Using only three 32” x 40” sheets of corrugated cardboard with no adhesive, Hexi is strong. Underneath her seat is a 16” hexagonal base with six triangles. Two heart shaped connections (interior) and hexagonal inspired belts (exterior) keep the foundation snug and secure. She also seats an adult comfortably. One can slightly recline back and relax. Her supportive backrest, appearing like an open book at frontal view, encompasses the body, almost like a jacket, but unzipped. Her lapels, also on a jacket, have triangular cutouts, showing an even more refined look. Hexi is certainly an edgy chair with class.

Spatial Journey Through Light
Scale: 1/8”=1’- 0”
DESIGN STUDIO I Assignment: Design three separate spaces of either contemplation or excitement Light can affect a person’s mood or control how a room feels. In a spatial journey, it does both. Below are three different scaled rooms. They either convey a serious or joyful mood. The first room is the journey's entryway to contemplation; the smallest of the three. It allows slithers of light to glow through, but also enough darkness to spark curiosity as to where the next space leads. The second is the middle room, excitement, where more natural light peaks through windows and its movable flaps. Finally, the journey ends with a triangular space of contemplation, calming the person down from previous stimulation.
DOGTROT HOUSE

PRESENTATION & TECHNIQUES, FINAL PROJECT Replicate the assigned house & create a presentation board displaying your work This modest but functional rustic trailer house in Poplarville, MS was designed by Waggonner & Ball Architects. The owners wanted a space designed for entertaining but also serve as lodging for their guests. Its overall layout consists of two log cabins divided by a breezeway or “dogtrot”. A scenic landscape view can be seen from the screened and dining room porch. The dogtrot house also features squared porthole windows, additional interior living and storage space, and a freestanding fireplace.
