The rivers of Europe

The Danube

The Danube carves a path through the heart of Europe, passing spectacular natural landscapes, influential cities, and some of the continent’s most wonderful sights, such as the Hungarian Parliament Building and the Iron Gates. Multiple capitals including Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava, and Belgrade perch along this beautiful waterway, providing guests with an insight into the history of the continent. The illustrious ‘blue Danube’ is one for architecture enthusiasts, naturalists, and classical music lovers.

The Moselle

A postcard-worthy river carving an intricate path, creating one of the most picturesque river valleys in Germany. Some of the best Rieslings in the world come from the areas surrounding this magnificent waterway, where sun-drenched vineyards all seem to have their own stories to tell as they pepper the countryside. With a myriad of fairytale castles, quaint villages and bustling towns all lining its bank, it is easy to see how many travellers find themselves getting lost in wonder here. The perfect destination for wine connoisseurs, ancient historians, and explorers.

The Rhine

A mighty river by anyone’s standards, the romantic Rhine flows through six countries, weaving its way past terraced vineyards, through Germany’s Black Forest, and past centuries-old fortresses. Experience the history and ancient culture of this country as you travel along the beating heart of the Rhineland and explore its beautiful settlements, and fairytale landscapes. It’s the perfect river for wine connoisseurs, nature lovers and those with a passion for medieval architecture.

The Main

The longest tributary of the Rhine, flowing through the idyllic Bavarian landscape, encompassing a wealth of wonderful German cities. Connecting the Danube to the Rhine its banks reveal much about the history of the continent, from ancient towns like Miltenberg, Würzburg and Bamberg, to fascinating historic sites like Wertheim Castle and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed site of Residenz. A great choice for beer drinkers, culture vultures and history buffs.

The Rhône

The Rhône cuts a serene path through the heart of France where medieval cities and Roman ruins line the waterway as it journeys south through ancient villages and prosperous towns. A slow and relaxed way of life takes hold the further south you journey along the Rhône River, under the watchful gaze of the Mediterranean sun. Long, lazy lunches and midday glasses of wine become the norm in this delightful part of France, giving you plenty of time to take in the beautiful scenery. Certain to thrill foodies, wine-lovers and culture vultures alike.

The Douro

Rusty golden rooftops and sun-drenched vineyards accompany the ‘golden river’ as it stretches through beautiful landscapes, past charming villages and historical landmarks. Before reaching the Atlantic, the Douro splits the city of Porto; a place steeped in the maritime heritage for which Portugal is known. Our Douro River cruises start and end in the city, offering a cultural bookend to a journey boasting picturesque surrounds every step of the way. History buffs, architecture aficionados and foodies will be swept up by the Port-producing quintas, archaeological hotspots and ancient monuments.
