W

hen I think of marketing and conversation I am reminded of the ‘80’s commercial for Faberge shampoo with Heather Locklear where she liked the product so much that she told two friends those two each told two more friends, and so on and so on and so on. Marketing encompasses a vast amount of meaning in one word. In one sense, it is the fifty thousand-foot view of the communication your business engages in to promote your brand, products, unique selling position and so forth. Regardless of whether you are launching an event-focused marketing plan or marketing in a broader sense; at the end of all of the social media twitter followings and ads that we take out in print….it becomes about making your business ‘buzz’ with a thousand conversations. In the end the most powerful tool we have as business owners is the personal reference and the conversations about our businesses. The road to making your business buzz a ‘conversation’ in the market that you serve can be simplified with a few key things in place: A plan that identifies a target audience. Your plan should be centered on who in the marketplace you are attempting to reach with your message. In that target audience there will be naturally occurring methodologies that infiltrate an area of influence. When you can get the conversation going there – with the influencers of your target audience – then you can tap into mass marketing to keep the ‘tempo’ going. A schedule of implementation-each marketing campaign needs a life cycle. As business owners we have certain campaigns that last a few years, others are product or event-specific and have a shorter life cycle. Regardless of that life cycle,

MARKETING BY DESIGN….. Making Your Plan Worth A Thousand Conversations! it is important to acknowledge that first of all, there is an expiry date on a marketing plan and secondly that you need to execute the plan to implement it effectively. Many plans in business fail due to poor implementation. Just a bit of pre- planning and a good dose of managing the marketing life cycle will see a good marketing strategy successfully implemented with surprisingly little effort but with amazing results! Measurables. The word says it all. We can’t manage what we don’t measure. Each marketing plan has an expected outcome that we are trying to achieve. That outcome should at least in part have a tangible goal, (for example, increase sales locally by 10% by December 31, 2012), as well as the more intangible aspects. At the end of the day, make sure that you spend some time identifying at least one measurable that you and your team are focused on so that when you achieve the goal of the plan…you actually are aware of it. “People share, read and generally engage more with any type of content when it is surfaced through friends & people they know and trust” ~Malorie Lucich, Facebook Spokesperson Once you have your framework in place, there are a few simple ideas that you can implement that can help support keeping that conversation going. 1. Social Media links in your email signature line. Simple but effective. If you engage in any of the social media marketing platforms in your business, make sure that at all points of contact with your market includes them. In your signature lines via email, on your website and on your business cards to name a few. When using these media, ensure that they are focused and tied into your marketing campaigns and do what you can to get your target market in your followers list. Work on those areas/persons of influence that can make this happen.

ecently, I had the opportunity to attend the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Conference in Hamilton, Ontario on behalf of our Chamber. WOW, all I can say is: what an exciting and educational experience! Being part of the Canadian Chamber network at this event helped to provide perspective to the Chamber’s work nationally. As Fredericton Chamber members, you have access to many benefits. In our recent survey, you told us that the number one reason you belong, however, is to grow your business through our network. You have the opportunity to network and associate with the Fredericton business community through your membership, which includes more than 900 businesses! In fact, our Chamber is the largest in New Brunswick! The many events that your Chamber puts on each year provides you with many chances to grow your network & develop your business, meet new clients, and sell your products and services. Well, participating in the Canadian Chamber conference afforded me that opportunity with chambers across the country from St. John’s to Victoria and all points in between. The opportunity to network with likeminded individuals and chambers and expand our network nationally was exceptional! What I learned was that businesses across Canada are interested in the same issues, face the same challenges and are looking for opportunities in the same way that we are in Fredericton. The theme of the conference was “A Canada that Works” – the focus was on working together to develop solutions that will help break down barriers to competitiveness. Chambers from across the country worked on setting policy objectives for the coming year. We were focused particularly on what the Canadian Chamber considers to be their number one issue; that is, tackling Canada’s skills crisis. We heard from businesses, government and academia on best practices, programs and services to help businesses find and keep skilled employees. This fits in perfectly with the work that your Chamber’s Economic Development Committee is working on this year, which is to engage our business community with segments of our population who can fill the

skills gaps they are experiencing. We also heard from many speakers, including the Hon. Jason Kenny, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, regarding immigration and how vital immigrants are to the continued success of Canadian businesses and the Canadian economy. This focus also dovetails with your Chamber’s Business Immigrant Mentorship Program, which helps to equip immigrant entrepreneurs with the tools they need to succeed in business in our region. There was also a great deal of focus on using technology to make Canada even more competitive. The discussion focussed around Canada being a world leader in innovation. Fredericton is certainly well placed to go forward in the innovation arena with our growing and vibrant ICT sector. We also heard several presentations on where the Canadian economy is headed and I am pleased to report... one of the keynote speakers, Douglas Porter, Deputy Chief Economist & Managing Director of BMO Capital Markets is telling us to be optimistic! One of the overall focuses of the conference was to debate policy resolutions which will serve to provide the Canadian Chamber with the backbone of their advocacy efforts in the coming year. Policies ranging from finance, environment, industry, transportation and infrastructure, to social policy were debated by the chambers in attendance. The final resolutions that were approved are now available through our website. As fall progresses, we will continue to work on these issues on your behalf while providing you with the top notch events, networking opportunities and benefits that enhance your membership. I look forward to seeing many of you out at upcoming events and also hope to hear from you on issues that you think the Chamber should be addressing.

Advocacy

Advocacy Committees In order to accomplish our advocacy mandate, the Chamber employs a two-step process to plan and execute these efforts. First, each year we seek to learn the issues that are most important to our membership primarily through our annual member survey. It is critically important that each member take the time to respond so that their voice is heard and the Chamber’s advocacy can be refined and more sharply focused through this aggregate data. Second, we primarily accomplish these directives through various committees, which are comprised of members and knowledgeable stakeholders, with support provided by Chamber staff. Board members generally act as chairs of these committees to keep the group focused on their specific tasks with the knowledge of how they fit into the greater whole. These committees often work with other community partners and stakeholders in an effort to combine knowledge and resources, while limiting duplicity of initiatives. There are four primary advocacy committees currently active at the Fredericton Chamber: Provincial Government Affairs, Municipal Government Affairs, Economic Development, and Physician Recruitment. Physician Recruitment: The 2012 annual member survey showed that having access to a family physician remains a top priority for members across various industries and sizes of organizations. This indicates an acknowledgement amongst our membership that even during times when the physician waiting list is at a so-called ‘manageable’ level, there remain systemic problems that require substantive changes to our health-care system. As a result, physician recruitment will continue to be a priority for the Chamber for the foreseeable future.

Provincial and Municipal Government Affairs: In 2011, the Chamber returned to the model of splitting the all-encompassing ‘Government Affairs Committee” into provincial and municipal committees. This allows for more thorough and meaningful advocacy to both levels of government. Both of these committees deal with topics determined by the annual member survey, but are also responsive to unforeseen issues that may present at any time. Of note, in September 2012 the Municipal Affairs Committee was invited to consult with the City of Fredericton for the first time regarding budget formation. This is a role that the Provincial Affairs Committee has performed with the province in previous years.

Economic Development Committee: The annual member survey has indicated for several years that a skills shortage has been a concern for large portions of our membership. During the 2011-12 committee season, the Economic Development Committee decided to focus its efforts on this specific issue on a multi-year basis. The first year was dedicated to information gathering – better defining the problem to be able to address it more effectively. Moving into 2012-13, the committee will use the lessons learned to put a plan into action in an attempt to achieve tangible results.

The Chamber is in the unique position of being able to draw on expertise from a myriad of sources and industries. Leveraging this position allows Chamber committees to act in an effective and comprehensive manner because of the commitment of time and resources over the years from our members. We also rely on assistance from members and stakeholders who are unable to join a committee full-time, but make valuable contributions on an ad-hoc basis. Finally, a sincere “Thank You” to all past and present committee members and as a final reminder, members are welcome to join a throughout the year.

It is equally important to find out why something fails (so you can do it differently next time) as it is to know why it is a success. HOW TO MARKET “Mooooo !!”, translated - “YAAOUCH !!” yelled the poor little red and white Hereford as he limped away from that old man he never really liked since arriving at the local farm. Yes, branding is a must, but it doesn’t have to be quite that painful. The topic of marketing is vast, so the tone of this article will be light and conversational with a focus on the role branding plays in marketing your business. While branding livestock is still a common practice, there are other branding techniques available to permanently affix a farm’s brand to their animals, so don’t worry about little Mr. Calf. This technique is used to identify an animal with a particular farm / farmer. How important is that? Just look at the “local” movement. It’s not just about sustainability and saving the environment, it’s also about knowing who, and where, it came from. I like how wikipedia describes brand as “the personality that identifies a product, service or company (name, term, sign, symbol, or design, or combination of them) and how it relates to key constituencies: customers, staff, partners, investors etc.” It reinforces how the brand must have relativity from the name, right through to the investors.

So before spending too much time, money and energy into marketing your company, make sure you have established a brand that not only represents who your business is, but what your business will become. If your business name does not represent your brand, you should change it to one that does. If your logo looks unprofessional, how do you think people will perceive the quality of your goods or service? If your slogan better reflects who you were, than whom you are now, then it’s time to freshen up.

This may sound a little harsh, but it’s important stuff. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have your brand’s look established, but proper preparation is essential for entering the marketplace. Otherwise think of it this way, you’re not only trying to reach a destination heading down the wrong road, you’re taking all of your customers with you. If you need to back up a little and reset your branding, as Nike says “JUST DO IT”. Okay, now that you’ve established your brand’s image and message, you must make sure that everyone who is associated with your brand is up to speed and on board. Of course it is essential that all employees embrace the brand and are on board for delivering on the promises that your brand makes. An internal benefit is sited in a 2007 article in the Journal of Brand Management, “internal branding not only directly influences the extent to which employees perform their role in relation to the brand promise, but also

influences the attitudes employees have towards the brand, which in turn affects employee performance.”

If you’re new at business, it’s helpful to know that most companies budget between 1% and 10% of their revenue to sales and marketing. Well that’s nice, but how does one actually do this marketing thing? Like the Miramichi boys say,”ya gotta fish where the fish are swimmin’”. Know who your potential customers are. More importantly, know who to target within that organization that will either be a decision maker, or an influencer to the decision maker. A short and practical course that I found extremely valuable was offered through Enterprise Fredericton and instructed by Chris Cummins. It was called Mastering Solution Sales. It taught how to identify what you have to offer, and how this product or service could be a solution to a potential customer’s problem or “pain point”. Then through research and organized perseverance, present your company and solution to the right person at the right time. To get an old fashioned F2F meeting is ideal whenever possible. Yes, I know, this is sales. But the point I make here is how important it is to reach the right person. To do so, you have to know “where they’re swimmin.”

So radio, TV, oh yes, social media and web? Yellow pages, magazines, brochures, tradeshows, digital signage (now available over urinals ;-), okay you get the point. Create a marketing plan. Even the undertaking will force you to think on how to spend your marketing money wisely. You can hire companies to do this or develop a marketing plan internally. If you create one internally, get some advice from your peers or hire a consultant for even a few hours for some outside input. Remember, everyone knows you have a limited marketing budget; so many salespeople tell you that their approach is right for you. Of course they will, that’s how they get paid! Get some independent advice on developing a realistic and effective marketing plan that works best for you with the money you have budgeted. Finally, market yourself; especially if you are a business owner. Get out there and network as much as you can. Employees come and sometimes go, but if the business community knows that you are on top of your game and have their best interests at heart, they’ll keep coming back. So suit up, keep fresh, fish where the fish are swimming, and get out there!

Meetings Matter Fredericton Campaign Launch Fredericton Tourism and the Fredericton Convention Centre have teamed up to develop a new lead-generating program called Meetings Matter, and you can help make it a success. Fellow Fredericton Chamber Member: Please allow me this opportunity to introduce myself; my name is Rob Frenette and I am the Co-Executive Director of BullyingCanada Inc., the only nationally registered anti-bullying charity that provides support, information and resources to youth, parents, educators and the public at large on the topic of bullying. BullyingCanada was co-founded by myself and Katie Neu of Ontario in order to fill a gap that we saw nationally beginning back in 2006 – there simply were no national youth-themed anti-bullying organizations, and certainly none that were created by the societal segment for them. At the end of the fourth year or so, we decided that we would be able to do more good if we had chartable status, and after applying we were granted this status just over a year ago. One of our goals for the status originally was to better extend our reach across the country, and are now able to provide every community across Canada with services such as a 24/7 support line and a national scholarship program for youth who are entering post-secondary education and have been community leaders on the topic. We’re also pleased to work with communities in operating customized school and corporate workshops to ensure that individuals are equipped with the proper tools in order to address bullying in a proactive way where they live and work.

It has become somewhat of a hot topic of discussion the last year but that does not make the harassment stop by any means. Continually, we are hearing from youth both provincially and nationally on how they are impacted by bullying and what they would like to see done to curb the problem. With the fall now seemingly half-over and winter fast approaching, our national team of volunteers are preparing for our annual national Anti-Bullying Day that occurs every December across Canada. This provincially-proclaimed day of awareness will occur on Monday, December 17, 2012. We’re very pleased to be working alongside municipalities like the City of Fredericton as well as organizations like the City Police Force, the Government of New Brunswick, and countless other communities, businesses and schools to make this national day a success. One of the easiest ways to be involved is to simply wearing blue; the colour of the Anti-Bullying Awareness Ribbon, in support of initiatives occurring in your schools, workplaces, and communities. In closing, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read more about what BullyingCanada Inc. has to offer to this great community. This has not been without consequences however, and in the last year of operations like other charities, BullyingCanada has struggled financially.
