Paul’s birthday challenge

Long wait for MetroBus THE MetroBus link from Emersons Green to the city centre, which was due to start this autumn, will not now be in operation until next summer. The rapid transport service, part of a £216 million network aimed at reducing journey times, will not start until repair work on the Bromley Heath viaduct is complete. This £5.9 million project is due to start in July and will take up to a year, unless last-minute funding is delivered to speed up the work.

Lengthy delays have been predicted, which would affect the MetroBus as well as cars, because traffic will be restricted to two lanes rather than four. A spokesman for MetroBus told Downend Voice this had led to a delay in introduction of the service eastbound from the M32. "There is no point in running a rapid transit system if it is going to be significantly delayed in traffic," he said. "Therefore the decision has been taken to postpone the launch of all MetroBus services

using the ring road until the Bromley Heath Viaduct work has been completed." The MetroBus westbound towards Cribbs Causeway is still set to start in the autumn. Creation of lanes and lay-bys for the MetroBus have already caused many hold-ups for drivers on the A4174 and worse delays are inevitable during the viaduct works. A park and ride at Lyde Green will open early to help ease the congestion. More details: Page 5

‘We’re fed up of being fobbed off with excuses over play park delays’ LYDE Green residents are starting a petition after yet more delays were announced before the children’s playpark opens. Local children can see the play equipment and BMX track from their houses but are prevented from using it because it is still fenced off by builders. Now fed-up locals are demanding action or compensation and are in the process of drawing up their petition. Kelly Adams from Lyde Green Community Association said people were tired of being fobbed off with excuses. She said: “First we were told the delay was due to the equipment being vandalised, but that was fixed a while ago. Then we were told they were waiting for grass to grow, and it was too costly to use turf or play matting. Now we hear it’s due to drainage problems and the whole thing may have to be dug up. “The planning agreement was that the playpark would be available once 120 dwellings had been built. We reached that point about two years ago, and there are 800 houses now. “We hope the petition will make the consortium honour its agreements or compensate all the people unable to use the promised facilities.” Community officer Marie Burke, who is employed by developer Knightstone Housing but works on behalf of all Lyde Green residents, said the residents had a good track record

of successful petitions. She said: “They organised one before to object to McDonald’s opening in Lyde Green, and will be able to use the same framework for this petition. “I am supporting the residents, who don’t think they’re getting any answers about this important community resource.” A spokesman for South Gloucestershire Council, which is responsible for ensuring the consortium sticks to the planning conditions, said: “The provision of the play area in Lyde Green is part of the developer’s planning obligations. “The developer is aware of this obligation and is working to open the play area as soon as possible.” Meanwhile across the ring road, Emersons Green park finally has all its play equipment repaired following vandalism and breakages last summer. The zip wire frame and wire has been replaced, and the hanging tyre has also been replaced. Town and district councillor Colin Hunt said: “We have been chasing this a long, long time and we’re very pleased to see that the play area is back in use. “We only hope that vandals don’t target it again. We have installed a new CCTV camera between the village hall and library, so that should deter teenagers who go to Sainsbury’s to get their bottles then walk over to the playpark. “The police have also increased patrols of the area.

‘Stop using our local streets as an all-day works car park’

PEOPLE living in Westons Brake have made their voices heard in response to proposed council parking restrictions. Locals have had enough of workers from across the ring road using residential areas as an all-day car park – and have made sure that the council knows how they feel. More than 30 local roads were consulted on as part of South Gloucestershire Council’s plans to introduce waiting restrictions including single and double yellow lines. But whereas most of the suggestions caused a handful of residents to respond, passions ran high in Westons Brake, where nearly 60 people logged on tell the council about their parking issues. Now the council has organised another consultation, solely for Westons Brake, to take place from March 20 to April 10. The revised plans include additional areas of double and

single yellow lines. But the fear is that parking restrictions will move the problem on to other roads within the Badminton Park estate. Responding to the original proposals in December, residents made it clear that they were fed up with not being able to walk along pavements because of cars parking on kerbs, and that parked cars were causing dangers on blind corners. One resident said: “This is much needed to prevent all of the commuters who work in the industrial estate abusing the residential area with parking in the roads all day. “I am only a few metres from the footbridge over the ring road to the industrial estate, so we are

completely overrun with cars by 9am during the weekdays. These new restrictions will simply move nuisance parking elsewhere in the road and surrounding roads. “A residents’ parking scheme might be needed.” Another said: “The parking is a complete mess because of inadequate parking provision for Emerald Park. With the metro bus stop near the Willy Wicket, our area could become a park and ride for people from areas such as Winterbourne and Coalpit Heath.” The town council responded to approve the proposals in general, but to highlight some issues such as residents in Westons Brake having particular problems and needing further

extension to the proposed parking restrictions. As well as the Westons Brake proposal, amendements to the original proposals for another eight roads will be consulted on in a separate proposal. These roads are Baynton Meadow, Bishop Road, Church Farm Road, Cynder Way, Pinkers Mead, Quarry Way, Rushy Way and Wadham Grove. The other proposals that were consulted on will go forward to the next stage and be implemented by spring 2018. To comment on the revised proposals, visit https:// consultations.southglos.gov. uk/consult.ti/EmersonsGreen_ WRRC2_WestonsBrake/ consultationHome

Park and ride to open early for ring road works THE park and ride at Lyde Green is set to open earlier than planned to help ease the predicted chaos on the Avon Ring Road over the coming year. The car park, which is officially known as a multi modal interchange and is intended to become a transport hub, will open before the work on repairing the Bromley Heath viaduct starts in July. Talks are taking place with bus companies about possible additional services for commuters. The site also has extensive cycle parking facilities and officials hope some people will also pedal and ride. South Gloucestershire

Council is still hoping its pleas to the Department for Transport and the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership will come up with the extra £3.7 million needed to cut the time the works take to complete from a year to six months - but unless this sum is found by April 1, the £5.9 million project will go ahead on a 52-week contract. The repairs, which are essential to make the 1960s southern viaduct fit for the future, will mean four lanes of cars being reduced to two. The council's head of transport Mark King and his team say they are expecting delays of up to two hours at rush hour. They are working with

large employers on proposals for staggered start times and home working to ease the pressure on the road network. They are looking at a range of options for reducing the impact on people living nearby, especially in Bromley Heath. These look likely to include shutting Quakers Road to through traffic. A proposal for restrictions on Cleeve Wood Road probably will not go ahead, but the team will monitor the situation and make changes where it can to address

problems, Mr King has pledged. Traffic on the motorway network will be encouraged away from the area and signs will direct drivers from Kingswood to use the A420 to Tormarton. A series of public meetings is taking place to make people aware of what is happening; the last of these was due to be held at Downend Library from 10am to noon on Saturday March 25. More will be held in May. Information is also available on the Bromley Heath Viaduct page on the council's website.

n NEWS COULD bees teach us humans a thing or two about building strong communities and helping each other? Downend beekeeper Alyson Hurst certainly thinks so. “Bees are fascinating creatures and are really intelligent,” the 51-year-old says. “It’s amazing how they work together for the greater good of the hive. They don’t work as individuals; they work as a collective. Rather than every man for himself, everyone could benefit from taking on that ethos.” Initially keeping bees had been the hobby of Alyson’s husband Nigel but when she was made redundant from her job as an attachment therapist working with foster and adoptive families, she started taking more of an interest in the tiny creatures. “I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue and realised I couldn’t go back to work. I took part in a foraging walk and realised I could mix the herbs that I grow in my garden with Nigel’s beeswax and make handcreams and lip balms, which is what I started doing five years ago.” The mum-of-two now runs a small scale business, called Hives and Herbals, selling honey, candles and handcream to outlets in the Downend area. “I make things with the herbs I grow myself or from things that I forage. Downend has a wealth of foraging places like King George V Park, Lincombe Barn Woods and Leap Valley. I try to get things as locally as possible.” A recent split from her husband has meant Alyson has had to do some deep thinking. “Now Nigel and I have separated, I’m going to be a beekeeper in my own right. We’ve decided to split the hives half each and I’m going to see

April, 2017

Fascinating world of bees

Alyson Hurst where I go from there.” Alyson, who has daughters aged 21 and 24, keeps her two hives in her large garden but the marriage break-up means they are selling up. Luckily she has managed to secure a plot for her apiary at allotments in Downend. Alyson took part in Downend Soup, a community initiative where groups and individuals can apply for funding for schemes which will make a positive difference to the community. “Unfortunately I didn’t win but I made some contacts which have been very helpful. I“It was brilliant news when I was kindly offered some space on the allotment. The bees will have all the flowers on the allotment to pollinate so hopefully allotment holders will see production rise. “At the moment though I need help to make space, clear weeds and then make a base for a shed. I’d also like help to build up a chicken coop to house the hives. It’s waist high but I’d like it to be head height, which would mean fixing wire and wood to the existing frame.”

Support to transport the bees would also be welcomed and it’s not as daunting as it might sound. “Bees don’t fly in the evening so we can close up the hive, stuff grass or a piece of wood in the entrance and put it in the car.” Alyson’s honey supply is dependent on the weather so her output unpredictable. “We take honey off the hive around the end of May and then in August. The amount of honey varies hugely. For the last couple of years, the weather hasn’t been too great; it’s been sunny then rainy. The bees gather pollen and nectar when it’s sunny but don’t fly when it rains because it damages their wings. They then eat their stores so don’t build up much. The last two summers we’ve had about 90lbs of honey but the summer prior to the that, which was really warm, we had 250lbs - it’s a massive difference!” Interestingly, Alyson’s honey is sold no further afield than Downend.“The honey isn’t processed and has lots of pollen and other bits which are really

good for allergies in it so it helps with local health and supports the immune system. Honey is also good for colds and easing stomach problems. I want to sell my honey as locally as possible.” Alyson also collects propolis, a substance also produced by bees which is beneficial to human health. Bees use it themselves as a glue to repair minute gaps in their hives. As it’s so sought after, some beekeepers will scrape off all traces of propolis. “I would never do that as it would be detrimental to the bees. I just take off little bits. My aim isn’t to make money from honey or propolis; it’s to make sure the bees are well-looked after. ” Alyson hopes businesses might sponsora hive, enabling her to continue supplying local honey to local people. One possibility is to allow, say, a cafe owner to pay for the upkeep of a hive in return for half its honey which they could then sell in their cafe. Once Alyson’s hives are set up at the allotment, she is hoping to offer local people the chance to come along and see what it’s like to be a beekeeper. It would be a natural progression from her work giving talks to schools and community groups as well as attending local events such as Heathfest with her ‘observation hive’ - a half-size hive with a glass top so people can see the bees working. If you would like to help Alyson or to find out more about her bees talks, you can call her on 07882 294683 or visit her Facebook page Hives and Herbals.

n NEWS RUNNING partners are hoping to use humour to drive home a serious message. Dave Hellings, from Downend, and Claire Phillips, from Fishponds, are taking part in the Bristol 10K in May in support of CALM - an award winning charity dedicated to preventing male suicide. But the duo are planning to do it in style - Dave by dressing as a chicken and Claire by donning an egg outfit. They hope their unusual attire will attract attention and lead to more donations for one of the country's lesser known charities. CALM - Campaign Against Living Miserably - aims to raise awareness of male suicide and provides free and confidential support and information to men of all ages who are down or need help. The charity is close to Dave's heart as his father took his own life just over 10 years ago. Dave, 36, said on average men in the UK are three times more likely to take their own lives than women. I suffered with a bout of depression when my father's death sunk in about a year later. The charity wasn't about then but thankfully I got through it. "I've looked at CALM's website to find out what they do and can see that they are doing some really positive work and providing a good service to people who need support. I have had a few friends who have suffered with depression recently so I pointed them towards the site." Dave and Claire, who are both single, became running partners after becoming friends on Facebook because they both attended the same school, Whitefield in Fishponds. They meet up a couple of times a week and run on average four miles each session. Dave, a civil servant, said:

bit more attention. As it's going to be a bit more difficult to run in costumes, we thought people might be more willing to sponsor us." Claire, 37, a client services representative, said: "We have set ourselves a target of £500 but anything that we can raise will be lovely. Reaching £500 would be amazing though. "I thought rather than supporting the usual cancer charities, we should go for something different. A lot of people suffer with mental illness, especially men, so it's good to help raise awareness of the charity. "Men don't talk about things but there are charities out there that can help them." You can help Dave and Claire reach their target by donating via their JustGiving page. "I did run a lot a few years ago but had knee surgery so had to stop running. I've done all sorts of races - marathons, 10Ks, ultra marathons. Now I go to the gym in my lunch-break and run with Claire once or twice a week. "Claire wants to complete the 10K in under an hour but I'll be happy to just get to the end! "Dressing up to run the 10K seemed like fun. Both of us have never run in fancy dress before but we thought it might get a

Costa proposal for former play cafe meets barrage of local opposition PLANS by the giant coffee chain Costa to move into the centre of Downend have provoked concerns about the loss of individuality on the high street. Costa, part of the hospitality group Whitbread, wants to move into the former bank premises vacated by the Hungry Caterpillar Play Cafe after just eight months. Because the play cafe received planning permission a year ago, Costa does not need consent for a coffee shop. It is seeking approval for new signage. Originally, the scheme was posted on the council website as a proposed change of use, prompting about 20 comments. Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council discussed the developments at its planning committee on March 7 and at the full council on March 16.

Councillor Martyn Poole said many people had approached him to express concerns about the impact on the independent businesses and the character of the village centre, where much work has been done, especially by Downend & Bromley Heath in Bloom, to create a unique and individual atmosphere. Worries were also expressed about the impact on traffic, as there are only three parking spaces outside the shop, meaning that drivers seeking takeaway drinks might be tempted to park illegally close by. But while some councillors feared for the current cafes , others felt that increased footfall in Downend might benefit existing businesses. In any case, they concluded, market forces were not a planning consideration so there

could be no objection to the Costa applications, which will be decided by South Gloucestershire Council. Many residents voiced their opinions on the council site and on social media forums, including The Beehive Coffee House Facebook page. On the council site, Stephen and May Ann Taylor said: "The centre of Downend has improved over recent years with independent coffee shops, delicatessen, furniture retail etc and the excellent flower displays. The introduction of a big cafe franchise and its signage is just what is not needed." Marian Henderson commented: "We have enough coffee shops in the area. We need to have more diversity of shopping otherwise the shopping area will die."

Phoebe Lau, who runs the Beehive, pointed out in her comment there were already Costas in Emersons Green and the garage in Badminton Road and said Costa could be the beginning of the end for a lovely high street. Chris Ford said on the cafe's Facebook page: "Hard working individuals who strive to create a unique business enterprise based on excellence will always win through. Each and every independent cafe in Downend has been born and survived on the basis of excellence. That's why they have achieved such a wonderful clientele that visit from far and wide. Costa has sought to capitalise on the hard work of these independents, to do their market research for them and slip in to a 'ready made market'."

Movies on the move LYDE Green residents got on their bikes for a movie night with a difference – the film ran entirely on pedal power. Special bikes were set up in Lyde Green Primary School hall for the free screening of Finding Dory, chosen by pupils at the school. With refreshments provided by Lyde Green Community Association and Knightstone Housing, the sold-out event was a hit with attendees. Before and after the film there were bike mechanics on hand to carry out free checks and minor repairs to residents’ own bikes, plus a range of trikes and bikes in the playground for children to have fun on. Kelly Adams from Lyde Green

Community Association said the event had been a great success. She said: “It was brilliant and the kids really enjoyed it. “There were 16 bikes and people were queuing up to have a turn. The hour before the film was used to start generating power from the bikes, then people cycled throughout the film to keep it going. “There was a also a smoothie bike, which made smoothies

when you pedalled it. People were giving out cycling bits and pieces such as bike reflectors and illuminous gloves.” The cycle cinema was one of a series of council-funded events organised for Lyde Green. It follows on from two nature walks by expert Steve England, two buggy walks, and support for the community Christmas event. A South Gloucestershire council spokesman said: “We

issued 180 tickets for our Travelwest cycle cinema event in Lyde Green. The evening was a great success, with a packed crowd enjoying the sustainablypowered screening, and we hope to organise further events of this kind in the future. “The project is part of the Sustainable Travel Transitions Year funding received from the Department for Transport. The aim of the project is to encourage residents to try new modes of travel when they move into a new home, which has been identified as a time when many people change their travel habits. “The objective is to encourage people to try sustainable travel modes, such as walking, cycling and public transport.”

n ADVERTISING FEATURE Hadley-Clarke Mortgages are a local business, providing professional friendly Mortgage and Protection advice, for people looking to buy a property or to remortgage. Borrowers understand the need for a mortgage when buying a property, however not so many people understand the reasons and potential benefits of remortgaging. Remortgaging is the process of moving your mortgage from one lender to another, without moving property. A few of the main reasons to do this are: • You could potentially reduce your monthly repayments - by securing a cheaper mortgage. • To release some of the value built up in your property for other spending - such as home improvements, etc. • You could potentially reduce your mortgage term - by finding a cheaper deal and keeping repayments the same you could be mortgage-free sooner. In today’s competitive market, borrowers can choose to switch their mortgage regularly (every 2 – 5 years) in order to take advantage of the new rates on offer. Those that remain on Standard Variable Rate (SVR) after their initial deal, for either a period of time or for the full term of their loan, could lose out. There are a range of potential benefits, not least the opportunity to reduce the total amount paid back, which in some cases could be a

11

Why remortgage?

significant margin. Although Lender’s requirements for approving a mortgage are stricter than they use to be, there has probably never been a better time for existing borrowers looking to remortgage. This is due to a combination of low interest rates and a wide choice of remortgage products. Last year we saw the Bank of England cut its base rate to a new historic low. Remortgaging also doesn’t have to cost as much as you may think. Some lenders offer fees assisted remortgage packages, which means they cover the costs of the required

valuation and standard remortgage legal fees. This usually means a slightly higher interest rate, but overall savings can still be substantial and with little or no upfront costs. Ideally borrowers should start the remortgaging process 2-3 months before their current deal is coming to an end. Remortgaging can sound like hard work and hassle to some, however by using a mortgage broker/adviser means you won’t have to do all the legwork by yourself. Hadley-Clarke Mortgages will support you through the process and do not charge an advice/broker fee, which means it won’t cost you anymore for their help and professional advice. Fresh hope for skateboard park A FATHER who is campaigning for the council to finish a skateboard park built in memory of his teenage son who was tragically killed has been given fresh hope. Jamie Clapp was just 13 when he died in 2007 after the light aircraft he was travelling in crashed into a field and burst into flames. His father successfully fundraised £100,000 and the Jamie Clapp Memorial Skatepark in Emersons Green opened in 2011. But Mr Clapp says South Gloucestershire Council has never finished the park despite promising they would put artificial verges around the site, build a picnic area and put up BMX ramps. Mr Clapp is now being supported by Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore who has written to South Gloucestershire Council on his behalf. A spokesman for Mr

Skidmore said: "Chris has written to the council expressing Mr Clapp's concerns and we are waiting to hear back now. "As this is a council matter we have also given him the details of his local councillors so he can pursue this further. "Chris remains in support of Mr Clapp and we will do all we can to support him." Mr Clapp will put his case to Emersons Green Town Council on April 13 when he will outline his concerns and ask councillors for financial support to finish the site. Mr Clapp said: "I've got to put my case to them and see what they say. My main priority is to see the skatepark finished by putting in artificial grass around the outside as so many young people use it, especially in the summer. At the moment there's just one bit of false grass and it needs to be finished off. It looks an eyesore." Last month South

Two leisure centre revamps under way MAJOR revamps are under way at two local leisure centres - Yate and Longwell Green. At Yate, a temporary pool is due to open on April 1, when both pools will close for essential maintenance and refurbishment. The temporary pool has been put up on part of the Kennedy Way car park so that swimming can continue until the work is completed in the autumn. It is 18 metres long and ten metres wide, with a depth of one metre. Swimmers can reach it from the corridor of the main building using an enclosed walkway, so they will be under cover at all times. Circadian Trust, the social enterprise that runs the centre, said public swimming and all lessons would carry on in the temporary pool throughout the closure of the main 25-metre pool and the smaller “learner” pool. However, anyone who doesn’t want to use the temporary facility can use the pools at the other Active Centres in Bradley Stoke, Longwell Green, Kingswood and Thornbury. The trust said the Yate pools and plant equipment required essential maintenance work in order to remain in operation. Pipework and plant will be replaced with new, environmentally friendly equipment which will secure the future sustainability of the facilities. A spokesman for Circadian

said: “We want there to be minimal disruption to customers and the team at Yate look forward to welcoming customers into the refurbished pool in the autumn.” Meanwhile, at Longwell Green, work has started on a £1.5 million revamp that will include more poolside showers and new changing rooms. The project will also deliver a new fitness studio with an additional 25 stations to meet growing demand, as well as a new entrance to the building and lobby. It is being funded by South Gloucestershire Council in partnership with Alliance Leisure, who also partnered on the recently completed £3.6m transformation of the Bradley Stoke Active Centre. The architects are Studio Four Architects and the design and build is being carried out by Createability. Ben Beasley, director of commercial cevelopment, said: “Longwell Green Leisure Centre is one of our most popular Active Centres so we are very excited that we are going to be able to both expand the facility and offer a range of new activities. “The work will result in a significantly improved sports and leisure provision locally, reinvesting in local communities, which is at the core of what we do as a charity.” The project will be carried out in phases and is due for completion at the end of 2017.

Life begins ... with a brutal challenge MOST people might mark the momentous occasion of turning 40 by booking a cruise or treating themselves a new car. Not Emersons Green’s Paul Dennett. For Paul is taking on an ultra triathlon where he will cover a gruelling 320 miles in three days. Paul, who will be joined by pals Marc Thomas and Phill Edwards from Bradley Stoke, will embark on the Bristol Brutal 320 Ultra Tri for local children’s charity Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW). The Ultra Tri, which takes place from May 26, has been devised by Paul himself and will take place on the streets and surrounding areas of Bristol. Paul said he wanted to take on a challenge in the year he turns 40: “During the event we will be looking for some volunteers to help adjudicate times and distances as we are going to try and complete the event under Ultraman rules; taking no longer

than 12 hours per day.” Day one will consist of a 6.2 mile swim and 90 mile cycle with day two featuring a 171.4 mile cycle. And day three will see the men running 52.4 miles equivalent of a double marathon. The guys have decided to take on this heroic challenge in aid of CHSW’s Charlton Farm, Bristol’s only dedicated children’s hospice, based just outside the city.

Paul Dennett (second left) with Phill Edwards, Olly Slym from Children’s Hospice South West and Marc Thomas at the hospice at Charlton Farm Paul said: “I wanted to do something to help Charlton Farm as it is a very special place which supported my friend Jim whose son Jack died at the hospice.” Bereaved dad Jim, from Emersons Green, said: “Without the children’s hospice I don’t know what my family and I would have done. Since the death of my beautiful boy Jack, we still get support from the hospice.

National Award winners of the Good Garage Scheme

Even though we are a bereaved family we still visit and they are still on the end of the phone.” Olly Slym, CHSW community fundraiser, said: “It’s a huge challenge that Paul and his friends are undertaking – one marathon is enough for most people, let alone two marathons after all the swimming and cycling! But the guys have been inspired by talking to Jim and their visit to Charlton Farm and they know just how valuable the hospice is for families who are facing the unimaginable.” Paul said: “For the final 5k of the double marathon on the Sunday we are going to be holding an event called the Bristol Brutal Family 5k as we want as many family and friends to join us and complete the end of the event with us.” To support Paul, Marc and Phill, go to www.facebook.com/ events/410705912601456/ or at: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Bristolbrutal320.

All hail the community heroes ALAN Maggs, a councillor for more than 40 years, who played a key role in the development of Emersons Green, has been honoured by South Gloucestershire Council. He received a Chair’s Award from Councillor Erica Williams in a ceremony honouring some of the area’s unsung heroes.. His citation said: “Alan is a very popular figure, who has quietly got on with the job in hand and has been described as ‘a tremendous servant of the area.” Sue Hiscox, founder of Downend Flyers, was also honoured for her 25 years of work with the girls and ladies football club. It’s estimated that more than 800 girls have benefited from Sue’s efforts since 1992. Her citation said: “Sue

in delivering exactly what she set out to do – providing girls in the local area with somewhere to meet friends, develop skills, keep fit and enjoy competitive sport.” Another award winner was Ann Watts, who set up the Feeding Friends breastfeeding support group at Downend Clinic 14 years ago. She spends every Monday morning supporting individual mothers and spends many hours outside the group providing

support and information on breastfeeding facebook groups and the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers helpline and webchat service. Ann even makes home visits to some women who need that extra level of support. The awards, which recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution local unpaid volunteers make, were presented at a ceremony at SGC College’s WISE Campus.

n AROUND THE WIs

THANK you so much to Karen Davis who visited on Monday March 27. She gave us an insight into the history of Zumba and we managed to blow away a few cobwebs. Karen adapts her classes to suit the needs of her ladies, and with low impact and high impact classes she offers an excellent hour of fun and exercise. She has a Facebook page and she runs classes all over South Gloucestershire, she also runs classes for children (of which one of mine goes to and loves!). In April we will be enjoying a session with Jim, who will be asking ‘How Does Your Garden Grow?’ Sadly there are no silver bells in mine. He will be providing us with hints and tips for a blossoming garden and he will be bringing small items from his nursery for us to purchase. Get involved in the Spring-

MANGOTSFIELD School is continuing to raise expectations with the introduction after Easter of a new behaviour for learning programme. The Ready to Learn scheme has already proved highly successful in a number of schools in Bristol and beyond, including Henbury School in north Bristol and Hans Price Academy in Weston-s-Mare. Staff at Mangotsfield have visited these schools and others before creating their own version of the scheme, which has zero tolerance of disruption and involves those that break the rules having to spend 24 hours in isolation, includimg an afterschool detention. Head teacher David Spence has explained Ready to Learn to students and parents and said most families were very supportive.

WE'VE identified a number of young people who are involved in anti-social behaviour (ASB) in Emersons Green, Downend and Mangotsfield. Three have now signed Acceptable Behaviour Contracts. If they breach the conditions of the contract, we’ll be able to take further action. I and my colleagues are carrying out targeted patrols, supported by Special Constables and officers from other teams. We’ll continue to call parents and carers out to collect their children, or take youngsters home, so we can discuss the problems. We can also require young people involved in ASB to leave an area for up to 48 hours – and if they don’t comply they could be arrested. These sorts of problems can take weeks to resolve and need more than police involvement. We’re already working with staff at the retail park, Neighbourhood Watch, South Gloucestershire Council, schools and other agencies to find solutions. We do need your help as well – after all, these young people

are part of the community too. It’s important to make sure the children you care about don’t get involved in this sort of behaviour. The consequences could affect the rest of their lives. I’d like you to know that a man’s been jailed for 28 months after admitting breaking into a house in Soundwell Road back in November and stealing cash and jewellery. Officers are constantly targeting patrols to catch criminals, but everyone has a part to play in keeping our community safe. If you hear suspicious noises such as breaking glass or an alarm sounding, please check, safely, to see what’s happening. If you see anyone suspicious at your neighbour’s property or making off call 999. We still want to know even if you don’t see anyone, but in that case please call 101. Most thieves are opportunists, so anything you can do which will mean they take longer to break in, make more noise or are more likely to be seen helps to deter them: • Locking up and setting the alarm, if you have one, at night as

PC James Rochford well as when you go out • Hiding your keys and handbag or wallet safely out of sight • Never leaving your keys in the back of the door or window • Keeping jewellery and other high-value items with a specialist storage company and cash in the bank, not at home • Fitting motion sensing security lights around your property

MP Chris helps abuse survivors to cast vote DOMESTIC abuse campaigners have welcomed a new scheme which makes it easier for people to take part in elections without compromising their safety. Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore has published reforms that will make the anonymous registration scheme in England and Wales more accessible to those escaping domestic abuse. The anonymous registration scheme protects people whose safety would be at risk if their name and address appeared in the electoral register and includes victims of harassment or stalking, as well as some witnesses in criminal court cases. The current system has come under criticism for lacking the flexibility and understanding of various scenarios which survivors of domestic abuse often find themselves in. The minister has been working with domestic

abuse charities over the past six months, including Women’s Aid, to explore what could be done. Women’s Aid estimate that the proposals could help thousands of survivors of domestic abuse. Mehala Osborne, survivor, local resident and founder of the Right to Vote campaign, said: “I was denied a vote whilst living in a refuge, and I never realised how much having a vote meant until it was taken away from me. I had already been through enough, and to be disempowered even more was so difficult. I am so proud to have started the campaign that has led to these proposed changes. Mr Skidmore, Minister for the Constitution, said: “Having met survivors of domestic abuse over the past 6 months, it is clear that the existing system has often let down those affected by domestic abuse.

‘Tinder for mums’ EMERSONS Green mum Lily Pawley was so fed up with the isolation and loneliness of being a full-time parent, she decided to confront the problem in a very modern way. The 29-year-old took to technology dubbed 'Tinder for mums' to create a parenting community where like-minded mums can meet up and make new friends. Inspired by statistics showing that 50 per cent of new parents find it hard to make local mum friends, Lily started using a new app called Mush. The app, which is free, has three main features - the Mush Matcher which uses algorithm to find similar mums based on location, mutual friends and similar age children; Let's Mush, a tool which enables mums to plan events and meetings or see who is free to meet right now; and Mush Guides, a growing hub of content written by mums for mums. Lily, who is mum to 21-month-old Stevie, said: "It can be such a shock to go from having a busy life full of work and social occasions to nappies and CBeebies.” Started in London by two friends who found themselves in a similar situation to Lily, Mush has been designed to make the lives of mums more sociable and fun by enabling meet-ups. The number of mums using the app in the area has doubled since Lily and her friend Alice Gilbert, 32, launched a publicity campaign, and meet-ups have taken place in Fishponds. “The important thing for us was that everyone was welcome. Don’t sit at home thinking it’s just you and you’re alone. Connect with us and let’s all get out into the local area. Bristol has so much to offer parents of young children,” said Lily .

n PETER'S VISION Myopia Matters - well that’s just a bit short sighted isn’t it?

SO what is myopia you may ask? Well if you are like Peter and you need glasses to see across the room or to drive, but can see close up without glasses then you are probably myopic (short sighted). This didn’t used to be too much of a problem and is easily corrected by glasses, contact lenses (including our popular Ortho-K overnight correction) or a combination of both. Parents often ask us what they can do to help and now we have a better understanding than ever as to why it happens and what can be done about it. There are a few things that come into play with myopia,

The team at Turners the first being genetics. If both parents are myopic then there is a likelihood that their child will go on to be short-sighted but there are things we can do to reduce this risk and reduce how short sighted they become. Get your children outdoors! Studies have shown that children need two or more hours of daylight per day to reduce their risk of developing myopia. We spend

more time than ever inside for numerous reasons, including our love for tech devices, and this is adding to our children's sight problems. There is a myth that wearing glasses makes your eyes weaker. This has been completely dispelled and, in fact, the opposite is true. If your child is myopic and doesn't wear their glasses then the blurred image encourages myopia progression. We now offer specially adapted contact lenses and glasses lenses for children who are becoming increasingly myopic, as research shows that using these specific lenses notably reduces the risk of myopia progression. Another way to reduce the risk of myopia progression is by wearing our Ortho-K lenses. These are contact lens worn overnight that shape the front of the eye. In the morning you remove the lens and can see for the rest of the day without glasses or contact lenses! It's truly amazing! As well as giving clear vision and freedom from daytime glasses, particularly good for active

children, Ortho-K has been shown to reduce myopic progression in children. You may wonder why at Turners Opticians we are so concerned about children developing myopia because our glasses look great on kids. The issue is that being myopic means that your eyes are longer than they should be and this can put strain on the eye and increases your risk of eye problems including retinal detachments and cataracts. If you'd like to talk more about myopia control, including Ortho-K, or any other eye problems you are welcome to book to see Zoe or Ginny – both of whom specialise in myopia control at our Fishponds Practice. n VET’S ADVICE

Could your pet benefit from acupuncture? How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points (‘acupoints’) on the body that have the ability to alter

various conditions. Acupuncture affects all the major body systems, it increases circulation and causes a release of many transmitters and hormones in the nervous system (including endorphins). Acupuncture relieves muscle spasms, stimulates nerves and stimulates the body’s natural defence mechanisms. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in both animals and humans. It is now being used by vets as a complementary therapy when conventional medicines are not quite enough.

What Conditions Respond to Acupuncture? Acupuncture is most commonly used as additional pain relief in

musculoskeletal problems such as arthritis. We see some amazing responses to acupuncture in painful conditions, it can even reduce the need for pain relief medications. However, acupuncture is more than just pain relief. It can also be used in the treatment of many other conditions including skin, nerve and gastrointestinal problems.

Some conditions may temporarily deteriorate before improving.

Does acupuncture sound like it could help your pet? Please call us for more information or to book an appointment.

Is Acupuncture Painful? Most animals cope really well with acupuncture sessions. Some will experience a moment of sensitivity as the needle penetrates the skin in sensitive areas. Most animals will relax once the needles are in place, some even fall asleep.

Is Acupuncture Safe? Acupuncture is safe if performed by a competent acupuncturist. Side effects and complications are rare.

n MANGOTSFIELD FESTIVAL

Mangotsfield Festival – 25 years and going strong Mangotsfield Festival has grown beyond recognition since it started 25 years ago. This year’s festival - on Saturday June 10 at Cleeve Rugby Club - promises to be better than ever as organisers get preparations underway to celebrate its special anniversary I WONDER if the people who organised the very first festival in 1992 imagined it would grow from its small “village green” beginnings to an event that attracts upwards of 5,000 people over the day. It is a regular fixture on the local calendar and continues to provide a focal point for the local community to come together by providing an opportunity for the people to showcase their talents through a varied entertainment programme and for local voluntary groups to raise money. It will start with a parade

through the village followed by the formal opening. There will be lots of stalls, music song and dance in the arena, a dog show, lots of activities for all ages - some traditional, some newer - and it all finishes with live music on the main stage. All in all a great day out. The festival meets two of South Gloucestershire Council’s strategic values: “People - to have healthy communities that are leading a healthy lifestyle” and “Places - to have a voluntary and community sector which

n METRO MAYOR

So why are we voting for a West of England Mayor? PEOPLE living in South Gloucestershire, Bristol and Bath are voting for a Metro Mayor to lead the new West of England Combined Authority for the next four years. More than 900,000 people are eligible to vote in the combined authority elections held on May 4. Residents in the Downend are might wonder what the point is of adding yet another layer of government to the region. Put simply - devolution money - £900 million to deliver infrastructure locally over the next 30 years. That works out at an additional £31 million each year. The Government wants

to have a named individual accountable for the additional powers and money being devolved to the West of England Combined Authority. Additional powers locally should mean better government for the West of England with a budget to deliver planned sustainable growth across the city region, it says. The West of England Mayor will work together with the Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees and the leaders of South Gloucestershire and B&NES

councils, Matthew Riddle and Tim Warren, to oversee a coordinated plan for the region. The three local authorities will still be responsible for most public service delivery, such as waste management, schools, and recreational facilities. Oversight of transport, housing, economic growth, adult training and skills will come under the new West of England Combined Authority, with the aim of creating a strategy for the whole area. Other financial benefits

include the opportunity to take part in the business rates retention pilot and a higher rate of payments from Government across the devolution region for roads maintenance, worth approximately £1m per year. Six people have declared that they are standing in the election, including: Tim Bowles (Conservative), Aaron Foot (UKIP), Darren Hall (Green Party), Lesley Mansell (Labour), John Savage (independent) and Stephen Williams (Liberal Democrat).

Aaron Foot, UKIP

Darren Hall, Green Party

FOR many people within the new West of England combined Authority, choosing the region’s first Metro Mayor will be an important decision for them. Therefore, it’s absolutely crucial, that come May, voters aren’t restricted to choosing between a selection of career politicians that are almost indistinguishable from one and other. With me on the ballot, they’ll have the opportunity to vote for someone completely different. If elected to be the new Metro Mayor, I will work with everyone across the new West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, and I firmly believe that direct democracy can and will deliver outstanding levels of service and will ensure all voices are heard. As your local UKIP Candidate for the West Of England Metro Mayor, I have three commitments. Firstly, as a farmer, I understand the vast importance of the greenbelt and thus I do not want to see our nation stripped of its prime agricultural land and natural wildlife habitats. This is why I will fight hard to prevent our countryside becoming swamped by overdevelopment, as our countryside must be preserved so be enjoyed by future generations. I will also pledge to get the Bristol and Bath gridlock sorted once and for all. This will be achieved by ending the war on motorists and implementing an integrated transport network where bus, train and road user all work together. Finally, I want to be the voice that represents you, the public, this is why in the first 100 days in office, I will create a direct democracy platform so we can shape the West Of England together. This will be done so that we can all champion change.

I GREW up in Gloucestershire and lived in the Bristol area for the last 15 years. After graduating from Swansea University as a mechanical engineer, I joined the RAF as an Engineering Officer. Later I undertook a Masters in Business and worked in public services in a number of roles spanning crime & drugs, culture and media & sport. I was the national spokesperson for the FRANK drugs campaign and supported Gloucestershire’s recovery from 2007’s flooding. I spent 5 years working with Bristol City Council, running the Bristol Green Capital Partnership, and led the team that won the European Green Capital Award. Over 20 years, I have become more active in campaigning on environmental issues and despite my reservations, I was persuaded to enter politics. I ran to be the Green Party’s Bristol West MP, achieving 23% of the vote, coming a close second to Labour. During the campaign I saw how the Green party’s vision and messages of hope connected with residents fed up with the hollow promises from ‘the greenest government ever’. As Metro Mayor, we can improve the lives of thousands who live and work in the West of England by investing in better public transport, affordable housing, and jobs that pay a living wage. We must do more to provide people with meaningful work and investing in people. We have the opportunity to be a world leader in the smart cities agenda, creating a strong local economy that protects and regenerates the natural resources upon which we all enjoy.

n METRO MAYOR Tim Bowles, Conservative Party AS a local community campaigner, I’m passionate about our region and that’s why I’m standing to be the first West of England Mayor. I’ve combined a successful business career with public service as a local Councillor over the last fourteen years and I want to use my skills, experience and determination to make our region even better. Our community is a great place to live with a growing economy and new jobs. But success brings demand for more housing - and transport infrastructure is just not keeping up. Local people want to see further improvements to transport and they want to be able to get on the housing ladder more easily. If elected, I will adopt a better approach to development – so the right homes are built in the right places, protecting our green spaces and prioritising urban regeneration. I’m also determined to make transport a priority like a new station at Henbury and Horfield, speeding up the Portway Park and Ride station, and increased services from Sea Mills and Shirehampton stations. The West of England Mayor can make a real difference to the lives of people in the West with nearly £1 billion of extra Government money and key powers over housing, transport, the economy and jobs. But we need a strong local voice to champion our region, we need a Mayor who can work with our Government, local MPs and Councillors to get things done instead of using the role to score political points.

Lesley Mansell, Labour LESLEY Mansell is standing for Metro Mayor to make a difference. An experienced negotiator, the NHS manager believes she has the qualities to unite the leaders of Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire. “My vision is to ensure everyone in the West of England can share equally in our region’s success,” she says. “I will put people first, working hard to get the best out of the three local authorities so devolution works for the many, not the few. “This election presents an opportunity for us to tackle the inequalities of our housing market, the insecurity of our jobs market and to end the frustrations of our journeys across Bristol.” Lesley, who lives in Radstock and works at Southmead Hospital, says her first priority is to address the region’s housing problems. “Getting homes built is essential for the region’s economy and, with better planning and contracts, new housing developments will also deliver apprenticeships and employment. We have already seen in Bristol what can be done when there is the will to build houses." Sorting out the region’s transport problems is another issue close to Lesley’s heart. ‘Too many of our roads, buses and trains are overcrowded, with congestion damaging our local economy and air quality so I will take the lead on transport to find green solutions so people can get to work and get around better.” One solution to rush hour congestion is, Lesley believes, to encourage employers to allow staff to work from home more often. As an equalities manager and trade unionist, Lesley will put equality at the heart of all she does, so everyone can benefit from prosperity.

Stephen Williams, Liberal Democrat THE election of a “Metro” Mayor for the West of England is an exciting opportunity to take our region forward. London has benefitted from the strategic leadership of its Mayor. Now we will have the same powers and new sources of money so that we can make the big decisions locally, rather than asking for permission or funding from the government in Westminster. The new Metro Mayor will be able to invest in the local economy, with £120 million available in the first four years. I will invest in cheap start up space for new businesses and social enterprises. I want to encourage tech and digital entrepreneurs, the fast growing industries of the future. I will also support those businesses that are developing a low carbon, sustainable economy. I will lead trade delegations to bring more jobs to our area, building a world recognised brand for Bristol and Bath. I will set aside land for new homes that are affordable for purchase and rent, safeguarding the green Belt. I will use new transport powers to regulate all of bus providers, cut journey times and improve air quality. I will reopen rail stations, starting with Ashley Down, Charfield and Saltford. I will work with our county neighbours to bring more rail improvements and a new tram link to Bristol Airport. This is a big job and I am the only candidate to have served as a minister in the government, as well as an MP and councillor. I can make the case to the government for even more resources and powers, taking our region forward to greater prosperity.

John Savage, Independent ON May 4, we enter a new phase of devolution that will profoundly change the way that our region is run. I have lived in the West of England for the last 40 years and for the first time in my life I see the possibility of a real shift in power from Westminster to local people. Last year three councils in the West of England – Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire – agreed to a devolution deal which will allow our region to determine its own future, as well as an additional £30 million in extra funding from government. This is an unprecedented opportunity for the West of England and it is essential that we do not waste it. We need a leader who can work across the three local authorities; someone who will not be bound by bureaucracy nor party interests. This is not the time to be divisive, but to unite the West of England around a common purpose and, in doing so, truly let this region reach its full potential. The West of England’s Mayor must use their position to facilitate co-operation between the local authorities for the good of all. I intend to stand as an independent candidate for this election and draw upon my vast experience of partnership working – with government, local government, businesses and charities – to bolster the status of the West of England and champion it as the best places to live and work.

Local schools help choose book award winner STUDENTS from Downend, Mangotsfield and Winterbourne secondary schools and Emersons Green Library book group were among those that helped choosed the winner of the 2017 winner Concorde Book Award. Votes were cast for South Gloucestershire’s literature prize for young people on World Book Day and the winner was announced at a ceremony at the Bristol & Bath Science Park in Lyde Green on March 7. A civil rights story, Lies We Tell Ourselves, a debut novel by American author Robin Talley beat off competition from five other fiction titles to claim the established annual award, which is known as the young people’s Booker. She said: “It's an incredible thrill to receive an award that's given out by young readers themselves. I encourage all of the students who read and voted for these awards to keep on reading, and to keep thinking critically about the books you read. It's a wonderful way to learn, but more importantly, it's a lot of fun.” Robin was presented with the award by the chairwoman of South Gloucestershire Council Councillor Erica Williams, who said: “The Concorde Book Award is an excellent example

Councillor Erica Williams with some of the young people who took part in the 2017 Concorde Book Award of libraries and schools working together to support young people to read more and develop a lifelong habit of reading.” The Concorde Book Award encourages 11 to 13-year-olds to join a reading group, whether at school or in a library, to read six shortlisted books and talk about them with group members, before voting on their favourite title. It aims to promote a love of reading among 11-13 year olds,

Lincombe Barn Camera Club scoops awards in South West competition THE Western Counties Photographic Federation covers the west of England from Lands End to Swindon and annually sets their 102 affiliated clubs a competition for the Knightshayes Trophy. Four members from Lincombe Barn Camera Club entered this competition with only two images per person permitted. They attended the judging at Clyst St Mary near Exeter with no other expectations than to see other people's interpretation of this unusual subject and to get some feedback on their pictures. This year’s subject ‘Diffraction’ proved challenging to research and to interpret - in the world of amateur photography it is a bit of a mystery. The club admitted that without the direction, enthusiasm and enquiring mind of the sadly missed late Ted Foster they might never have pursued this as a subject. He not only researched, but supplied diffraction grating filters and

explained various ways of using CDs/DVDs and beams of light. As you can see from the images, the club members were inspired to find a variety of solutions to this conundrum. To the delight of the club, Rachel Domleo was awarded 2nd and 3rd places, whilst Anita Fullerton and Joy Flood, from Emersons Green, both gained a Highly Commended certificate, Bruce Gibbs also received an honourable mention on one of his images. The Knighthayes Trophy results with images from other clubs can be seen at www. wcpf.org.uk To find out more about the Lincombe Barn Camera Club, which meets at the Downend Folk House, visit www. lincombebarncameraclub.co.uk

n MP CHRIS SKIDMORE WRITES FOR EMERSONS GREEN VOICE HAPPY Easter to everyone who is reading this column - it hardly seems any time at all since I was wishing a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. But as the weather is warming and spring comes into bud, its a reminder that 2017 is now well underway. In Parliament, the Article 50 Act has now been passed, and we will have triggered our exit from the EU on March 29, ready for the negotiations to begin the process of leaving the EU. n As the minister responsible for democratic engagement, I was delighted that recent figures announced in March show that we have a record number of people on our electoral register - over 47.3 million - but I’ve been determined to work on ways in which we can ensure that anyone facing barriers to being able to vote isn’t denied an opportunity to use their democratic right. Last month, I announced several new policy measures to ensure that survivors of domestic violence, either based in refuges or needing to keep their addresses hidden from abusive

partners, shouldn’t be denied the opportunity to vote just because they need to protect their identity and where they live. I found out about this issue thanks to a local campaign run by Kingswood based Mehala Osborne, who has fought bravely to raise this issue at the highest level - and I’ve been delighted to take action which will make it much easier for survivors of domestic violence to register to vote anonymously in the future. It just goes to show that national changes can start locally just as I hope that the campaign to change the law around sentences for dangerous drivers, led superbly by the families of Ross and Clare Simons, who were tragically killed in Hanham in January 2013, will also be successful. Recently, the government’s consultation on a possible change in the law crucially increasing the maximum sentence that a dangerous driver who kills can receive from 14 years to life imprisonment - came to an end, but I am hopeful that 2017 will see the government take action and change the law - thanks so much to all local residents who

had their say in the consultation. As Mehala Osborne’s story shows, every individual voice does count. n 2017 is also proving to be a year of change locally as well. As I’ve discussed in my previous column, residents will have a unique opportunity to vote for a Mayor for the West of England Combined Authority on May 4. The new Mayor will have key powers when it comes to deciding the future of transport and housing in our area, which is why it really is a crucial election for our area. Last week, I took the Conservative candidate Tim Bowles on a tour of my constituency - I took him to Emersons Green to show him the vital importance of getting a M4 link road to the ring road, and also to Lyde Green, to show him the new £5.9 million Emersons Green Primary School which is going up fast - it looks fantastic. But I’m concerned that Lyde Green currently is cut off from Emersons Green - we need a footbridge urgently to connect Lyde Green with Emersons Green. I hope I’ve impressed upon Tim the need for investment in our area,

Email: sales@emersonsgreenvoice.co.uk

above all in transport. n The Avon Ring Road is of vital importance to my constituency; ever since its opening in the early 1990s, it has shaped our local area, allowing for rapid transport across our area. The day before it opened, and the public were allowed to walk down the empty road, I remember walking down the new carriageway amazed at the enormous feat of engineering. But time has passed, and as many residents will know, there have been large scale repair works on the road recently. The government funded repairs worth £15.5 million - one of the largest investments locally in the network - but still more is need to repair Bromley Heath Viaduct, if we are to avoid a year long process of repair works. Together with local MPs Jack Lopresti and Luke Hall at Westminster, we have been pressing for a solution, and recently presented Transport Secretary Chris Grayling with a petition of local residents on this issue. I hope to be able to update the Voice with progress on our campaign shortly.

12-year-old girl: You could see my heart pounding through my clothes

SPIRE Bristol Hospital and Consultant Cardiologist, Dr Mark Walsh came to the aid of twelve year old Lucy Blanchard where others couldn’t. As a result of her Type 1 diabetes, Lucy suffered a Hypoglycaemic episode, falling unconscious and suffering several seizures. It was not until this occurred that the Yorkshire based family noticed something wasn’t quite right with Lucy’s heart. Considering the resting heart rate of a regular 12 year old is usually around 60-100 beats per minute (bpm) Lucy’s heart was beating at and exceptional rate. She was experiencing heart palpitations up to four times faster reaching 250-280bpm. Lucy explained how she felt during this “It made me feel anxious, faint, dizzy and sick. You could see my heart pounding through my clothes.” Naturally concerned, Lucy’s parents turned to the diabetic care team, based in Leeds, who informed them that it was just a result of the adrenaline. However these episodes of increased heart rate continued for a couple of weeks, causing Lucy to feel rather unwell. Parents Danny and Caroline took their daughter to see a doctor at their local medical practice. It was here the doctor immediately called for emergency services to rush Lucy to the nearest accident and emergency unit. Then diagnosed with Supra-Ventricular Tachycardia (SVT) they planned to refer her to a Paediatric Cardiologist on the NHS to determine the cause. However covered by their medical insurance the family

decided to arrange a private appointment at Nuffield Hospital, Leeds. It was there where Consultant Dr Thompson performed a number of scans and test to reveal that Lucy had a condition called Wolff-Parkinson White syndrome (WPW). WPW is caused by an extra electrical connection in the heart. It is a congenital heart defect where symptoms may not develop until later in life. Many cases are usually diagnosed in otherwise healthy adults aged between 20 and 40. “My condition was making me feel quite left out when I couldn’t join in with P.E and sport at school.” said Lucy. Despite being diagnosed at Nuffield Hospital the family were informed that they did not have the expertise or specialist facilities to perform the correcting procedure that Lucy required. The only place in the region equipped to perform this procedure was Leeds General Infirmary (LGI). “We grew more and more anxious as the weeks went on. Despite her medication of beta blockers our daughter suffered another episode of SVT, which resulted in another agonising trip to A&E.” Explained Caroline, Lucy’s mother. Days and weeks passed and the parents’ worries and the stress of Lucy’s condition only grew and after two cancelled dates for the procedure at the LGI they began to look elsewhere. “We hadn’t realised how difficult it was going to prove to be to find somewhere to help. I lost count of how many private hospitals I contacted around the country, just to be informed they didn’t have the facilities

Email: sales@emersonsgreenvoice.co.uk

to perform the procedure.” Said Danny, Lucy’s father. “I was determined not to see my daughter suffer anymore and it was then I found Spire Bristol Hospital. I was quite surprised to speak to Dr Mark Walsh (Consultant Cardiologist) directly and he immediately reassured me that he would be able to help us.” Caroline explains their experience of Spire Bristol Hospital. ‘We were offered to view the hospital before our visit but politely declined due to the distance of travel. When we first arrived it was astonishing. Lucy thought it seemed more like a hotel than a hospital. She was allocated her own room and nurse, who I must say was really nice and friendly. When Lucy went down to Theatre we were kept up to date with what was happening and how it was going. On completion of the ablation, Dr Walsh had a chat with us and gave us all a full brief of how and where they had operated, to both mine and my husband’s relieve he informed us it was a great success.” Lucy has recovered well and has had no more symptoms since the ablation. Spire Bristol Hospital is a national Centre of Excellence for Cardiac and Cardiology services and is one of only a few private facilities which can offer paediatric treatments to children. Should you require any more information or would like to book a consultation with a Consultant then you can call their patient treatment advisers on 0117 980 4080 or email info@spirebristol.com

n MOTOR RACING WITH ANDY LAURENCE IT had been three years since Andy Laurence of Downend had competed in the Cotswold Clouds Classic Trial. It had been a pretty disappointing debut for the Marlin that his driver, Dave Greenslade, had purchased a few months earlier. After failing to get up most of the hills (and struggling to get to the start of some), the differential packed up and left the pair stranded in a layby on the top of the Cotswolds in the middle of nowhere. This year was going to be different. In the three years since, Dave had completely rebuilt the car from scratch, fitting upgraded parts and improving the performance massively. After a test on the Allen Classic Trial in November, hopes were high for a good finish. The day started reasonably well with the car making it up many of the hills until a misfire stopped the car half way up a hill. It was disappointing, but the pair carried on. The same happened at the next hill. As the misfire got worse, it was clear that the fuel pump was failing.

James wins class at Kemble event Discretion the better part of valour, the two headed to the nearest pub for a swift half and early retirement. Two weeks later, the pair were at Kemble Airfield for an AutoSolo. Andy had been given a drive in the Mazda MX5 belonging to James Hurford of Downend. James has been steadily improving the car and honing his skills over the last few years and a new rear anti-roll bar was fitted for this event. During the first test, it became clear that the car liked to go sideways. James put in three fast runs, whilst Andy learned the art of the piroutte and threw away any chance of a good finish. The second test led to three strong runs for James, whilst Andy proved erratic, setting both the fastest and the slowest times.

James led the class over lunch, so it was all to play for. After lunch, James made two mistakes in the first test and dropped down to third place. Andy fared a little better but was down in fourth place. It all boiled down to the last two runs. James had to find 1.2 seconds to win the class, which is not an easy task when events are often won by tenths. Andy had no hope of improving over 4th place. Despite the odds, James put in two brilliant times to win the class. Best of all, they'd used just half a tank of fuel between them and it had been a cheap day out! James is next driving at the Great Western Sprint at Castle Combe Circuit on 25th March. This is a round of the British Sprint Championship, where

700bhp single seater racing cars crest Avon Rise at 180mph. Quite a spectacle! Entry is free for spectators and I'm sure James would appreciate the local support as he competes in the Vincenzo & Son Bristol MX5 Challenge. The event is run by Bristol Motor Club; a club for people who like cars driven quickly. Look them up on Facebook, Twitter or Google.

Lewis eyes ton-up for Mangotsfield MANGOTSFIELD United's Lewis Powell is on course for his hundredth goal for the club. Powell was on 99 as Downend Voice went to print and he was hoping to notch up the ton in the home game against Bridgwater on March 25. He will be only the third player in the club's 65-year history to achieve this feat. The Field still have an outside chance of making the promotion play-offs. Form has been patchy since the start of February - P9 W3 D4 L2 - but the final run-in includes games against rivals Salisbury and Taunton and Evesham. The latter two are both away and the side have performed well on opposition turf this season so there's still hope. Players Ryan Bath, Kerry Morgan and Matt Coupe have left the club. George Lloyd is back playing again after he incurred a broken ankle in pre-season and Kyle Knott has also recovered from his longterm injury. April home matches are: Salisbury on Saturday April 15 and Didcot Town on Saturday April 22. The Salisbury match is also the former players' day, where ex-Mangos can come along and watch the match for free. After the game, the club are also holding another of their very successful Pig Race events and everyone is welcome to watch. "Don’t worry, the pigs are pink, furry and of the wind-up variety!" said commercial director Martin Preedy.
