IT is sad to report the damage to play equipment in Emersons Green and Lyde Green, especially following the arson attack at the village hall late last year. Police are working with schools and retailers to try to tackle nuisance behaviour and, as PC Jim Rochford points out in his column, parents can play a part by making sure they know where their children are hanging out. But let’s not forget that the vast majority of young people are getting on with their lives responsibly and respectfully – and many are achieving great things. We highlight some of the sporting successes at Mangotsfield School in this issue – and look out for more good news from the school next month. Well done, too, to world champion tap dancer Maisie Boyd and the tiny maths whizzes at Mangotsfield Primary. And what about Kate Owens, who does not let her Down’s Syndrome get in the way of living an
emersonsgreenvoice SpEcIAL
February, 2017 active life – and leaping from a plane at 15,000ft? Not that it’s only the young folks that are working for their community; fundraisers Mark Brimson and Richard Ford have their own reasons for wanting to make major efforts for charity this year and Mike Isaacs’s music reminds us of one West Country man who was still having a positive impact on his community well into his second century. As well as life-affirming stories about people, we aim to keep you up to date with local issues that affect us day to day. This month, those include the streetlights – very welcome news! - and the latest ring road repairs. The temporary closure of the tip might not be welcomed by all but one of its aims is to reduce traffic chaos for people living nearby. Do contact us if you have a story to share.

‘As soon as we fix something at the park, it gets damaged again’ VANDALISM to play park equipment in Emersons Green and Lyde Green is destroying facilities as fast as they can be installed or replaced. At Emersons Green junior play park the tyre swing needs replacing for the second time in less than a year after vandals set fire to the tyre immediately after it was repaired. In Lyde Green the new play park has not even opened yet but has already been graffitied and vandalised. Other problems include the Emersons Green zipwire being out of action for more than six months because of two separate faults to the seat and the support frame, which now needs to be replaced completely. Emersons Green councillor Colin Hunt, who is a member of both the town council and South Gloucestershire Council, has been liaising with officers regarding repairs to the play park, but said it is turning into an ongoing battle against vandals. He said: “There’s no easy solution. As soon as we fix something, it gets damaged again. “We’re speaking to South Gloucestershire Council about the possibility of installing lighting, but it would cost an enormous amount of money to dig down and get electricity all the way to the park. “It would be nice to have
it was upsetting to hear about the vandalism to Lyde Green’s planned park, and it was too soon to say what impact it would have on timescales for it to open. She said: “We have been working closely with the consortium to get the play park and BMX track open for use as soon as possible, but when something like this happens it causes further delays and prevents the facilities from being used by the community as a whole. The association is striving to engage with all ranges of the community and has a specific sub-group to develop areas and activities within Lyde Green for the younger generation. “It is hoped that by encouraging all to get involved we can grow the sense of pride in Lyde Green and work together to
CCTV but there are usually a lot of objections from people if you try and install cameras. “There is also an underlying problem caused by the clay soil the park is built on. It keeps moving, which makes the play equipment break, so South Gloucestershire Council is looking at whether something can go under the play park to stabilise the clay.” Across the ringroad in Lyde Green, Community Association chairwoman Kelly Adams said
prevent further incidents of this nature.” A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said that repairs were being carried out at Emersons Green play area but delays were caused by parts taking six weeks to be made and shipped from abroad. He said: “We are obtaining quotes and organising replacements for the damaged zip wire and tyre swing.Over the next couple of months we will also be proactively refurbishing the roundabout, rotarider and IXO climbing walls. These refurbishments will be carried out on the same day as the replacement items arrive and should not involve any of the items being out of action for more than one to three days at Right at Home is oneRig o most.” trusted care compan tru team of friendly, relia te Right at Home is one of the UK’s most Rig specialiseOur in assisting spp trusted care companies. local tru at Home is one of the UK’s most need a helping handte new team at ofHome friendly, reliable CareGiver’s Right is one of the UK’s most Quality care and Right trusted care companies. Kate leaps from a plane at 15,000ft A WOMAN with Down’s Syndrome has just completed a freefall skydive to raise money for a charity which cared for her severely disabled brother. Plucky Kate Owens, 32, braved heights of 15,000ft - the highest you can jump from without oxygen - to support Children’s Hospice South West. Her adoptive mother Sandie Davis, from Emersons Green, said proudly: “I don’t think there have been many people with Down’s Syndrome who have done skydives!” Kate originally signed up to do the skydive last year but bad weather meant it had to be cancelled three times, despite Kate and her family travelling to Devon each time in anticipation. Finally Kate got her chance when blue skies awaited as she arrived in Honiton on January
18.
Sandie said: “Kate wasn’t particularly nervous. Myself and her husband were much more nervous! She did a tandem skydive, freefalling for 60 seconds then with a parachute for around six minutes. Everything went really well. She loved it. “Kate’s always wanted to show people with Down’s Syndrome and families who have children with Down’s Syndrome that you can do the things you want to. Kate is a young married woman who lives independently with her husband in their own house. The skydive was something she really wanted to do to support Children Hospice South West and didn’t see why she shouldn’t. She was very confident that’s what she wanted to do and nothing was going to get in her way. “We’re very proud of her and
Sandie said the family visited the hospice for short breaks together during Jack’s illnesses. She said: “Jack was seriously ill during his life and we used the hospice at Charlton Farm for the last four years of his life. Kate visited him there on numerous occasions so was very aware of what the hospice does and how it supported us. “Jack died at the hospice after we transferred there from hospital when we knew there was nothing more we could do. We were all devastated by Jack’s death and Kate was no different to anyone else. She’s a very compassionate lady.” Sandie could not speak highly enough of the hospice and the way staff supported Jack and the family. “When you are looking after a profoundly disabled child who has round-the-clock needs, there is no let up; there is no one you can leave him with. When you go to the hospice it’s like someone wrapping you in a duvet and looking after you. They are very holistic and look after the whole family and there are lots of things for children to do. Even the rooms for the adults are like hotel rooms! It’s just a wonderful caring atmosphere.” Sandie and Jim who have three children of their own, Louise, Liam and Charley, have fostered more than 30 children over 35 years, many of them with disabilities. As well as Kate they have adopted Jamie, 25, who also has Down’s Syndrome, and have permanently fostered Darren, 24, who, like Jack, has
what she has achieved.” It is estimated Kate has raised at least £800 but it could be as much as £1,000. Kate, who also lives in Emersons Green with husband Steve, needed a private medical before she was allowed to jump because she has Down’s Syndrome. The medical was carried out by a doctor at Christ Church Medical Centre in Downend who kindly asked the family to put his fee into the fundraising pot. Kate’s skydive was a tribute to her dearly loved foster brother Jack who died in December 2013 at the age of eight. Jack, who was permanently fostered by Sandie and her husband Jim, came to the family in 2001 when he was two. He was profoundly deaf with Down’s Syndrome and cerebral palsy.

Sandie said: “We tended to have children join us who then stayed with us, although we have done short-term work with about 30 children. Generally we prefer children that become part of the family and part of our lives forever. “It’s a way of life like no other because it’s not something you do for seven or eight hours a day and come home and forget about. Street lights to stay on all night THE controversial policy of turning off many street lights in South Gloucestershire for several hours a night is to end. Changes in technology mean it is now cheaper to keep the street lights on but dimmed in the early hours than to switch them off. South Gloucestershire’s Environment and Community Services Committee has therefore voted to drop part-night lighting, which began in 2008 and was fully implemented by 2014. Committee chair Councillor Heather Goddard said: “As part of an efficiency drive, the previous cross-party administration took the decision to switch off street lights for part of the night. “This was controversial in some areas, particularly where there were concerns over road safety and crime, and I know most councillors have been contacted with concerns about street lighting. “As such I am pleased to say that advancing technology allows us to reinstate whole-night lighting by dimming lights after a period of time, rather than switching them off. This will still save us money – it is a win-win that allows us to offer better service at reduced cost.” Labour’s lead member on the committee, Councillor Ian Boulton, said: “I am pleased to support this move, which takes Labour’s proposal of three years ago further forward. Turning the street lights off has proved controversial, and I suspect that many residents will welcome this change of policy. "It will cause a very small increase in CO2 emissions, which I regret, but we will be monitoring further advances in technology which will hopefully address this over time.”

Tip closed until June THE council tip in Carsons Road, Mangotsfield, is shut for four months for improvements. This means people from the area will need to go to Yate or Stoke Gifford to dispose of household waste from February 1 to May 31. The work at the site is aimed at improving traffic flow in and around the recycling centre and changes to the yard in preparation for more changes to refuse collection - including smaller black wheels bins - later in the year. A spokesman said closing the centre to the public was necessary for safety reasons,
although the tip will still be used by council collection vehicles to unload household waste after collections. The three other Sort It recycling centres in South Gloucestershire will be open as usual, 8.30am - 4.30pm seven days a week. Masters of maths already CHILDREN from Mangotsfield CofE Primary impressed teachers from around the area when they took part in showcase maths lessons with teachers from Shanghai. Headteacher Marion Borland said she was very proud of the way the students had responded to being in the spotlight, which included three sets of television cameras filming Year 2 pupils during their lesson with Melody, one of the Chinese teachers. Melody and her colleague Lin visited the Nexus Teaching School Alliance for two weeks as part of an exchange arranged through the Boolean Maths Hub. It follows a first visit to the Cabot Learning Federation last year. They worked with Mangotsfield primary's maths
specialist Abby Watkins, who was one of a party of 70 expert maths teachers from schools across the country who went on a research visit to Shanghai schools in November last year.
The aim of the programme is to help teachers in English schools introduce mastery approaches to teaching maths, which have proved successful in Shanghai, in their schools.
Melody told the Voice that she had enjoyed working at Mangotsfield and learning from the pupils and staff. "The children are very kind and polite," she said.
Busy time for foodbank RESOUND foodbank in Mangotsfield fed 146 people in December. This included 74 adults and 72 children. Co-ordinator Claire Collins thanked all supporters for their donations of food during the month - 1089 kg. This nicely matched the 1096kg of stock, including Christmas boxes, handed out by the volunteers. For more information, visit www.resoundbristol.co.uk

Arrests over burglaries TWO men are in police custody on suspicion of involvement in a number of walk-in burglaries of homes and businesses this month. The men, aged 34 and 31, were arrested on Monday January 23 and remain in custody at the time Emersons Green Voice went to press. They are both suspected of involvement in a house burglary in Emersons Green which was reported by a witness and a walk-in burglary, also in Emersons Green, in which a staff member’s bag was stolen from a business. Both took place on Monday January 23. The 31-year-old is also due to be questioned about four other incidents including the theft of petty cash from Hanham Community Centre and thefts from units at a business park in Hanham and a school in Kingswood.Officers have also seized property they believe to be stolen. Neighbourhood Sergeant Darren Warr said: “We’re really grateful for the call from a witness reporting a suspected burglary at a house in Emersons Green. This is a safe area and the community plays a big part in keeping it that way, by making sure their own property is secure, looking out for their neighbours and reporting suspicious incidents as soon as they happen.”
CHILDREN from Stanbridge Primary School have wised up to internet safety - and they are helping shoppers in Emersons Green to do the same. With the help of Simon the Cyber Owl (aka teacher and e-safety leader James Baker) and their head teacher Faye Bertham, they handed out leaflets explaining how people can protect themselves from dangers online.
Mr Baker said: “We think that it is our duty as a school to work in the community and to share our knowledge and expertise. Our confident and hugely caring children thrive on helping and supporting others.” Miss Bertham said: “I am so impressed with our children. They are so keen to spread the word about keeping safe and they represent the school with pride.”

'Let's cut 52 weeks of ring road hell to 22 weeks' REPAIRS to the Bromley Heath viaduct - which are set to cause tailbacks of up to three miles on the Avon Ring Road - are due to start in June. South Gloucestershire councillors have voted to go ahead with the essential maintenance works on the 1960s southern viaduct, closing both lanes on the westbound carriageway. All traffic in both directions will use the northern viaduct, causing lengthy delays for traffic going to and from Emersons Green. The Environment and Community Services Committee heard that two schemes structural repairs and an improved cycle and pedestrian route - would be carried out at the same time, reducing the total maximum time on site from two years to one. Both schemes are funded by the Department of Transport to a total of £5.9 million. The councillors were told that
if the Government could come up with another £3.7 million, the works could be accelerated and completed in 22 weeks rather than 52. Councillor Jon Hunt (Downend) said this would be the best possible solution. "Now that people know this needs to be done, they want it started and finished in the shortest possible time. We must write to our MPs and to the Government urging them to ask for this extra money," he said.

Residents and councillors, including Emersons Green councillor Rachael Hunt, told the meeting the cost to individuals and businesses of the delays would amount to far more than £3.7 million. Councillor Ian Boulton (Staple Hill) said: “We have to lobby very hard to get this money from the Government. We should remind ministers that South Gloucestershire is an economic powerhouse. It would be good value for money to provide this extra funding because so much of our local wealth depends on links along the ring road." Residents pointed out that just a day before the meeting an accident on the ring road near

UWE had caused delays and gridlock for miles around. Malcolm Coles, who lives in Heathfields, supported the call for an accelerated programme. "There is only one option 22 weeks. The money has to be found," he said. Planning and transport lead member Councillor Colin Hunt said the authority would continue to press for the additional funding to get the work done as soon as possible. The council's head of transport Mark King said after the meeting: “We appreciate that this is one of the busiest sections of the A4174 and understand that this will cause significant delays and inconvenience and we apologise in advance. We will be doing everything we can to keep the public regularly informed about the viaduct work and how to plan their journeys.” For more information visit www.southglos.gov.uk/bhviaduct

n NEWS A BRISTOL Rovers supporter is hoping to raise £10,000 for charity to mark the 10-year anniversary of his wife's death. Mark Brimson was left bereft after his "soul mate" Gloria died in June 2007 following complications during brain surgery. Her death left a huge void in Mark's life and, by his own admission, he has found her loss difficult to come to terms with. He believes putting his efforts into raising money to help others suffering from brain injuries will be a fitting tribute to Gloria as well as helping him continue his journey in coming to terms with her untimely death. Mark, 42, has set up the Gloria Brimson Foundation to raise money for Headway Bristol, a charity which helps survivors of brain injuries. "It's been a tough nine years for me," Mark said. "Gloria was my soul mate. We were together from a young age so she was all I really knew. She was the life and soul of the party and loved to go out and dance. She just loved being around

people and everyone who met her liked her. She was one of those infectious people.
"I wanted to mark the 10th anniversary year in a positive way instead of making it a
miserable one like all the other years have been. "I chose Headway Bristol as, had Gloria survived the operation, she would have gone through their doors, so it made perfect sense." Gloria, who was just 33 when she died, was diagnosed with an AVM - Arteriovenous Malformation - which in its simplest form is a cluster of abnormal blood vessels in the brain. She underwent a 15 hour operation to remove the vessels but died on June 7, 2007 from complications. Although Mark has arranged various fundraisers in support of the charity, his main mission is a sponsored walk from the home of Plymouth Argyle FC to Bristol Rovers' base at the Memorial

Stadium. He will be joined by eight friends he met through work and football. "I decided on Plymouth Argyle's ground because that was where the first away game I took Gloria to was. I also wanted to walk a marathon a day for five days and the 127 miles involved from Plymouth to Bristol works out at that. We will be walking about eight hours a day so we've now stepped up our training. I'm walking about eight miles a night at the moment and will gradually build that up." Mark, who runs a business providing till systems and credit and debit card machines, said his fundraising mission to help others has played a huge role in
him moving on. "We were together for 15 years and it's hard to adapt to the shock of what's happened. Nothing really prepares you for losing a person you lived with and it's taking me longer to accept than I probably would have expected it to. The fundraising is part of letting go and moving forward with my life. "It's a case of trying to find myself again and it's definitely helping me get back to my old self. Me getting out doing exercise has also helped. I feel it's a really good thing to be doing, both mentally and physically." Mark, who now has a fouryear-old daughter with partner Sarah Trevatt, is fundraising
via a JustGiving page which is already up to more than £2,000. He said: "Online we are up
to about £2,200 but we've had some pledges come in offline so we're already about 50 per cent on the way to our £10,000 target. "All the people doing the walk with me are good friends. They never met Glo so I'm really humbled by them doing it because effectively they're doing it for me. I think it will be a real 'Band of Brothers' moment that I will look back on in years to come. "It's going to be great; I'm really looking forward to it." The fund is being boosted my many of Mark's friends who have organised their own fundraisers including 10k runs and cycle rides. Mark is also organising a dinner and dance at the Holiday Inn, Filton. It takes place on Friday June 9 and tickets cost £39. Outdoor play boost LEARNING and play has got even more fun at Barley Close Primary School thanks to a £10,000 grant to redevelop an outdoor learning area. The school secured the money from the National Lottery to build an extended covered area, water feature, climbing equipment, story teller's chair and den area. It will be used for nursery and reception aged children. The work was completed by Pentagon in mid-December ready for use in the New Year. Headteacher Jo Williams said: "The children in nursery and reception will be able to extend their learning opportunities in a lovely natural environment. "Families also did lots of fundraising including a raffle and sponsored events which paid for a new covered sand pit. "This is a great addition to the outdoor learning area which will benefit children for many years to come in our community."

Ridings remains in charge for now WINTERBOURNE International Academy will remain the responsibility of Ridings’ Federation trustees for the time being as they oversee action aimed at improving the school. Lord Nash, the schools minister, said consideration could then be given to transferring the academy to another trust. The minister recognised that the federation, which has been experiencing troubled times lately, needed help in the work required at Winterbourne (WIA) and he welcomed the involvement of a consortium of Olympus Academy Trust (OAT) and Castle School Education Trust (CSET). They are providing interim leadership support, including That includes the secondment of Peter Smart, headteacher of the Castle School in Thornbury, to the post of interim principal for the rest of the academic year.
Dave Baker, chief executive of OAT, is interim chief executive at Ridings. Meanwhile, the South West office of the Regional Schools Commissioner will monitor progress at WIA and review the situation later in the year. The Ridings’ Federation of Academies has been in a state of turmoil for some time, experiencing a financial crisis, poor Ofsted ratings and the departure of two consecutive chief executive principals after just a matter of months. The trustees decided the financial problems could be tackled more quickly if they pursued a new sponsor for WIA and its partner Yate International Academy - both of which require improvement. As a result, Winterbourne and Yate academies will go their separate ways, with Greenshaw Learning Trust becoming the new sponsor of the Yate campus.

n NEWS PEOPLE in the Downend area are being urged to support a campaign to increase the maximum sentence for dangerous driving to a life term. It follows the tragedy four years ago in which Ross and Clare Simons were killed when the tandem they were riding in Hanham was hit by a speeding car. The driver, Nicholas Lovell, who was disqualified and had 69 previous convictions, was jailed for ten and half years and is expected to serve little more than five. The maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving is 14 years. Ross and Clare’s family want to see it made tougher, especially for those who commit the offence when they are already banned from driving. The Justice for Ross and Clare Campaign has been pressing its case since the deaths in January 2013 and met former Prime Minister David Cameron and the previous Justice Secretary Chris Grayling to urge them to action. Now, backed by Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore, the family met the current Justice Secretary Liz Truss in Parliament on January 16. Their talks came a fortnight before the closing date for the Government consultation on whether to increase the maximum sentence. Ms Truss told Ross’s parents, Dawn and Edwin Simons, and his sister Kelly Woodruff, that she wanted to see longer jail terms. She said after the meeting: “Killer drivers ruin lives. Their actions cause immeasurable pain to families, who must endure tragic, unnecessary losses. While impossible to compensate for the death of a loved one, we are

determined to make sure the punishment fits the crime.” Kelly Woodruff, who lives in Oldland Common, was pleased that Ms Truss was backing the campaign. She said: “The Justice Secretary was quite horrified – it really hit home. We asked her if something would be done by the close of this year and she said she thought it would be sooner than that. She was very committed. “This is the time for change – it is going to happen and this is a chance for people to have their say. A lot of people in a community are affected by death by dangerous driving, such as the people whose house Ross and Clare were killed outside for example. "This is the time for everyone to look at the consultation and

sure the sentencing rules were changed. He said the judge at Lovell’s trial had wanted to imprison him for longer but was unable to do so. He said: “The Justice Secretary was shocked by the case. I would urge all of those that have followed our campaign to add their comments to the consultation so that we can deliver life sentences to those that carelessly wreck the lives of innocent people." Musical memorial to WW1 soldier The Last Fighting Tommy - aka the late Harry Patch captured the imagination of the British public, not least musician Mike Isaacs. Through Harry's relationship with his grandmother, Mike was inspired to write a tribute album where listeners are transported on an emotional and historical journey. Jayne Taylor finds out more. HE was an unlikely hero - a pacifist who was to become the last surviving soldier in the country who had witnessed the horrors of the trenches during the First World War. Harry Patch famously said "War is not worth one life" and it was this stance which was to have a profound effect on Downend musician Mike Isaacs who has just released an album as a tribute to the man he knew personally. Mike came up with the idea of a World War One concept album after meeting the war veteran when he started a relationship with his grandmother Betty Isaacs. Released under the project
name for Mike's collection of songs, The Fable, the Imperial Plan addresses the futility of war and the personal tragedy of so many millions of people in the Great War of 1914 -1918. Mike, 59, said: "Harry lived next door to my grandparents and after my grandfather died, he started looking after my grandmother Betty by cutting her grass and taking her to the shops. They became a couple and moved into a home in Wells, Somerset until she passed away in 2002. "My father David kept on visiting him until Harry passed away at the age of 111. I met him quite a lot of times when my grandmother was alive and quite a few times afterwards."

Harry and Betty, sweethearts in their twilight years When Harry died on July 25, 2009, Mike was unable to attend his funeral, having moved to France to run a busy bed and breakfast. This feeling of regret was the trigger for the album. "I felt I'd missed out and didn't get to express my respects to him," Mike said. Struck by Harry's views and the impact he had on him, Mike

was inspired to come up with a collection of songs, including one specifically about Harry, around the subject of war. After he started writing in 2014, Mike soon realised he had enough for a whole album so has spend the past two and a half years producing what was to become The Imperial Plan. Various local artists are featured on the 15-track offering, thanks to Mike's contacts through his position as director of the Bristol Music Industry Network. Although the album is widely available to download, the physical CD version comes with a 16-page booklet providing lyrics and the background story to the making of the album. Already it has received some rave reviews, including one from Harry's grandson Roger Patch

n PEOPLE who said his grandad would have very proud. "People are giving me really fantastic feedback about the album," Mike said. You could be forgiven for thinking the tracks are all set in 1914 but there are influences from Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Roger Waters, Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (one of Mike's favourite bands) and the Kinks. "There's all sorts of stuff on there! I didn't write music as it would have been back in the First World War because that would have relatively limited in style - I wanted something more modern that younger people would be able to get into as well. Some parts sound very 70s and some are more modern. There is some jazz, a couple of waltzes, some very sad songs and even some classical music. One song called The Spark sounds like something you would hear at the theatre." In fact, the whole album is very theatrical which has led to Mike meeting with a theatre producer to discuss using the album as a basis for a play or production of some kind. "If we can put a group of people together who can get funding and get the ideas going then we could put on some sort of stage play," Mike said. "I'm not imagining I could produce something like Les Mis, but something a bit more contemporary would be a possibility with a narrative, dance, video footage and a band playing some of the songs. We've got lots of ideas but at the moment all I've had is one conversation with a theatre producer." Mike said the album provided a fitting tribute to the man he
Lyrics - In Memoriam HJP
Musician Mike Isaacs knew and admired. "Harry was absolutely amazing. He was on the ball and always cracking jokes; he was a really witty man and was always surprised about all the fuss made of him. "Harry was very strong in his views about war; he was generally very anti-war. He thought war was something the generals and the colonels should fight out, not the troops. Harry felt if war ends by sitting around a table filling in paperwork, why didn't they do that in the first place? "The track In Memoriam HJP is very much about what I knew about Harry. He was very quiet about the war until he reached his late 90s and early 100s when he understood the importance of his position because he was one of the few soldiers left alive. He realised that people should hear what he had to say." The Imperial Plan has been released across over 150 online stores for download and streaming on sites such as Amazon, iTunes, Deezer and Spotify. 7. Stuff lightly with wadding. Fold your length of ribbon in half and place approximately 5cm length of each end inside the heart, so you have created a loop hanging from the heart. Now pin the top of the heart together, remembering to secure the ribbon in place with a pin 8. Take a length of your sewing thread and double it back on itself, then repeat this and cut the length of thread which should have 3 strands. Knot the ends of the strands together and thread the other 3 ends through a sewing needle. Now sew a running stitch (over and under, over and under etc.) all around the edge of the heart, taking care to sew through the ribbon with a stitch when you get to it to catch it in place. Finish off by knotting the threads together and cutting the ends.

T could mean the difference between life and death, yet figures show that 20% of women still do not attend their cervical screening appointments. Cervical Screening Awareness Week ran throughout January 22 to 28 and Consultant Gynaecologist Dr Amit Patel is urging women in the region to make sure they are up to date with their smear tests. Dr Patel who practices at Spire Bristol Hospital said: “Cervical cancer is a preventable disease. The signs that it may develop can be often be spotted early and it can be treated before it even fully starts. “While around 750 women each year in the UK die of cervical cancer every year, figures show that many of those who develop the disease have not been screened regularly. The single biggest risk factor for developing cervical cancer is not being regularly screened, yet it is thought that as many as one million women a year are missing out1.” Women aged 25 to 49 are invited to attend cervical screening, or smear tests, every three years; those aged 50 to 64 are invited every five years. The screening can detect abnormal (pre-cancerous) cells in the cervix in order to prevent cervical cancer. Dr Patel said: “It is important to get the message across that cervical screening is not a test for cancer, but instead allows for detection of abnormalities at an early stage.

Maisie is a tap dance world champ NO wonder teenager Maisie Boyd has a spring in her step - she's celebrating after tap dancing her way to success on the world stage. Maisie is part of Swindonbased Tap Attack dance troupe which recently returned from world championships in Germany with a clutch of medals. Members of the 42-strong GB team, which includes dancers from across the UK aged from nine to 24, competed against 1,800 tap dancers from 19 countries at the International Dance Organisation’s World Tap Championships. Maisie, who lives in Downend, was part of the gold medal winning team in the adult formation category after winning gold in the junior category last year. She was also a part of the winning production team which took gold for their Mary Poppins-
style tap extravaganza. The 16-year-old, who studies at St Brendan's Sixth Form College after finishing Downend School last summer, has been throwing up her heels since the age of six. Mum Alex, who teaches adult tap twice a week at the Fishponds-based 344 Dance School, said she was really proud of her daughter's achievement. "Maisie went from the junior team to the adult team after the last world championships. Since joining the adult category the tap has been a lot harder so she learnt a lot and as a result her dancing has greatly improved. "Maisie still goes to 344 Dance School for her normal weekly lessons and does her tap exams through them but travels to Swindon to train with Tap Attack every other Sunday.Alex said there's never a dull moment in their house with Maisie
constantly keeping her dad Stuart and brother George, 15, entertained with her dexterous routines. Maisie, who plays the drums,
said: "The whole experience of the world championships, from the training, travelling to Germany, dancing in front of a huge audience and then winning two gold medals, was absolutely amazing. "I have met new people from all over the world and made friendships that will last a lifetime. My dancing has also improved massively as a result of all of the training and my confidence as a dancer has as well. “It was incredibly hard work but was absolutely worth the effort and I am now the proud owner of three gold medals!" Tap Attack creative director Jo Scanlan said: "The team had to dance their way through many rounds before reaching the finals in the hope to be placed. "I am very proud of how every dancer worked to achieve the results they deserved.”

n NEWS AN Emersons Green man aims to raise £5,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society in 2017 after his mother was diagnosed with the condition. Richard Ford, 49, is planning a year of sporting events, quizzes, raffles and socials in order to reach the target he has set himself. It’s the second year he has supported the charity, raising £3,600 for it in 2016. He has kicked off the year with a 12-hour exercise bike ride at the leisure centres in Kingswood, Longwell Green, Bradley Stoke and Yate, cycling between each one and using static bikes at each gym to complete the challenge. He said: “When my mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s I found the information the Alzheimer’s Society provides really useful. “There’s so much you have to sort out if a relative has Alzheimer’s, and its website tells you how to organise things like power of attorney. “I also found the ‘talking
Richard’s £5k charity mission point’ section of the website helpful where you can ask questions to other families going through it. “I wanted to give something back, which is why I’m fundraising for the charity, so other people can get help in the future.” Richard, a computer operator, grew up in Winterbourne and has lived in Emersons Green with his wife and two children for 20 years. His mother, now 80, has recently moved into Park Farm House care home in Pucklechurch. The line up of charity events he is organising in 2017 already includes a music quiz night at Pomphrey Hill pavilion on March 3; a team karting race night in Avonmouth on March 7; and a bike ride to Coventry ahead of the Bristol Rovers game there on March 25. He is also organising an
evening with former England cricketer Phillip DeFreitas at Cleve rugby club in April, and an 80s night following a similar sellout event in 2016. Richard is no newcomer to fundraising, having raised thousands of pounds for charity over the past five years. He started out with a cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats in aid of children’s charity Action Medical Research, and has completed a string of charity challenges since including
riding across England and France. Fundraising has now become a family affair, with both children helping make his event posters, and daughter Hannah signed up to run a half marathon for the Alzheimer’s Society. Richard is asking for members of the public to sponsor him and attend events, as well as businesses who can donate raffle prizes or sponsor an event. He said: “The Alzheimer’s Society is a charity that is very close to my heart, and if I can raise a substantial amount for it this year then that could make a real difference to the lives of others who are going through this.” People can sponsor Richard at www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Rich-Ford or find out more about his charity events at www.facebook.com/ fordydementiafriend

n PETER'S VISION
I
T’S that time of year, we are settled into Winter (well fed up of the cold & rain anyhow) and seeing a bit more of what 2017 will bring. For me it is a time of excitedly looking forward to the year ahead. I was at a Christian Leadership Conference late last year, titled ‘Becoming a Transformational Leader’. The key speaker was invited to speak to us from his home in the USA. He spoke passionately about his life journey (literally at times as he has lived in five countries across three continents) and how he came to speak to others about leadership. What stood out to me was how he looked for every opportunity to learn from the people he met and the life experiences he had. Although he was speaking to us from the front, his ability to also listen was clear to see. I remember my Dad Philip teaching me to listen as well as speak; “you have two ears and one mouth, make sure you use them in this proportion” he said. (I must have been a vocal teenager although this is not an admission of anything from my teenage years!). Anyhow, at this conference,
How can we help you today?
The team at Turners one of the things I heard about leadership in the workplace was helping people to excel in their work - something we have a passion for at Turners Opticians. A key message was, if possible, choose a job role that you enjoy and have a natural talent for. Well, I thought, I certainly enjoy all

aspects of my work, the natural talent and how I perform in my work I will leave for others to judge! I do know though that the increasing number of new patients coming to see us on the recommendation of our existing patients is a good indication that we are delivering on our vision to provide better eye care and clearer vision for each of you. To our existing patients - very many thanks for continuing to recommend us to your family and friends. To the rest of you - How can we help you today? Our extended eye exam is more thorough and in-depth than a standard sight test. The longer appointment gives time for your Optometrist to listen to any eye or vision concerns you may have, as well as thoroughly check the health of your eyes, and provide you with a personal recommendation for your eyes and vision. How else can we help you? Well speaking personally, my aim is to
provide each of you with better eye care and clearer vision. If you wear glasses, particularly for driving or on electronic devices, then our contrast enhancing lens will reduce glare and ensure that you have the most comfortable and clearest vision we can give you. If you wear contact lenses then the range of contacts we can recommend to you has been tailored to give you healthy, comfortable and clear vision. To book an extended eye exam or for advice about glasses or contact lenses please visit our website, telephone our Fishponds or Henleaze practices or even by pop in to say Hi! I look forward to seeing you soon!

n VETS ADVICE
Our team supporting charity in Zambia IN December 2016, our Leading Vet Carla and Practice Manager Ollie travelled to Zambia, Africa to volunteer with Livingstone Animal Protection Service (LAPS), which was set up in 2014 by a group of animal-loving friends to try to improve the health and welfare of domestic animals in the Livingstone area. The charities main focus is community outreaches where they take veterinary services to people who are otherwise unable to access them. In this way they can reach dogs that otherwise would never see a vet and never be vaccinated. Throughout Africa they often find untreated diseases and wounds, malnourished dogs and fly-bitten ears. They use this opportunity to talk about appropriate care and encourage responsible ownership. They do school visits with their own dogs to talk to children about how to behave with dogs, how to avoid dog bites, and to help them realise dogs can be their best

Recipe for success as support pours in for Downend Soup THINGS are hotting up for the first Downend SOUP next month and businesses have been lining up to support the initiative. Now established in over fifty towns and cities across the UK, SOUP evenings are becoming a popular way of helping support community groups. Organiser Ian Browne said: “SOUP is about helping people realise their ideas that in turn will make a positive difference to our community
and neighbourhood. People gather one evening, we hear three ideas, we enjoy some soup, entertainment from local musicians and everyone casts their vote. The cause with the most votes gets funding in the form of donations people made attending the event which will help to kick start their project." Downend SOUP has been well supported by the local businesses, including Mel and
Pete Scragg from Melanie's Kitchen. Mel said: "We’ve always supported community initiatives such as Downend Folk Club and when Ian pitched the idea to us, we felt helping out by donating our own delicious soup, was a simple way we could play our part." Ian added: "Since going live, the Downend SOUP Facebook group has attracted lots of interest. With businesses,
churches and residents all getting behind the idea, it looks like Downend’s community spirit will really shine." The first Downend SOUP is set for Tuesday March 7 from 7.30-9pm at Christ Church Parish Hall, North Street, Downend. Tickets for the event can be reserved through www. downendsoup.com where you can also apply to pitch your own idea or group.

Mango sport magic MANGOTSFIELD School has become a hub for school sport across the area . It is now the base for the CSET Sports Partnership, which replaces the Grange Sports Partnership. This organises inter-school matches and tournaments in a wide range of sports and enables students to learn from experts in their field. Wendy O'Donnell, the partnership lead and school games organiser, said the 28 primary schools involved were able to access opportunities including coaching, competitions, sports and leadership courses and 1:1 PE co-ordinator support. “Our aim is that all students have a great PE experience at school,” she said. Will Roberts, chief executive of CSET, which includes Mangotsfield and Downend secondaries, strongly supports the partnership.
“We would like to develop Mangotsfield School as the ‘sporting hub’ for CSET, which is an expanding multi academy trust.” he said. Mangotsfield School head teacher David Spence is delighted at the opportunity to build strong partnerships with and across the community through sport. “It is a great way to engage students and raise their aspirations,” he said. Naomi Clipston, head of girls' PE, said she was pleased that the school's girls' teams were achieving as much success as the boys. The Year 7 and Year 8 netball teams are unbeaten South Gloucestershire champions and the Year 7 team won the area SportsHall athletics, while the Key Stage 4 girls got through to the county badminton finals. Girls also enjoy football, dance and cheerleading in their PE lessons.

n ON THE BEAT with PC JAMES ROCHFORD
Do you know where your kids are? FIRST I’d like to tell you that two teenagers have appeared in court in connection with the arson at Emersons Green Village Hall. Significant damage was caused when a fire started in the toilet block on Thursday 24 November – while the hall was in use. Two 15-year-old boys appeared before magistrates on Monday 16 January charged with arson and were each given a 12-month referral to the youth offending panel. We’re currently working with schools and local retailers to tackle a recent slight increase in antisocial behaviour. A few teenagers – some as young as 13 – have been involved in nuisance behaviour in and around the shopping area after school and until about 9pm. We’ve had complaints from retailers and local people about dozens of teenagers gathering
in noisy groups. There have been reports of young people causing a nuisance in the shops and riding bikes and mopeds in an anti-social manner. We’re investigating one incident on Thursday 29 December in which a supermarket was forced to close briefly after a smoke bomb was let off in the store. I’d like to ask parents and carers to make sure they know where their children are, who they’re with and what they’re up to. We all want our children to be able to meet up with their friends, but they need to know how to stay safe and show respect for their community. We’re already making use of dispersal orders which give us the power to direct someone involved in anti-social behaviour to leave an area for up to 48 hours. We’ll be taking young people home or calling their parents
or carers to fetch them. Anyone returning within the specified time could be arrested. If these problems continue, local businesses may start banning unaccompanied teenagers, while we’ll work with them and the council to take further action if necessary. It’s important to remember that most young people just want to hang out with their friends, and often they don’t realise that a noisy group can be intimidating to other people. However, no one should be left feeling harassed, alarmed or distressed by anti-social behaviour. If you’re affected, it’s important to get in touch with us or South Gloucestershire Council. Visit our website,www. avonandsomerset.police.uk, or www.southglos.gov.uk to find out more.

BROMLEY HEATH WI THOSE of you who remember
the opening night of our WI will know that Bromley Heath WI are no strangers to lining up, and as you know we love to dance. So this month we combined the two! We have tried all sorts of dance styles in the past: belly dancing, salsa and street dance to name a few but this month we had a go at line dancing, led by our very own Sheila, ably assisted by Sue H. Line dancing is often done to country and western style music, but we found out that you can line dance to any sort of music. So no cowboy boots or hat required! Whilst taking photographs of all the dance action, I couldn’t help being impressed by how quickly everyone picked it up and how fabulous they all looked as they danced away the evening. As some of you will know, the Women’s Institute also has a role in campaigning on issues that matter to its members. This month we voted for the resolution for 2017. There is a shortlist of six issues and the choice was almost impossible to make, as they are all such worthwhile causes. One of which, “alleviating loneliness” is something we can all start to tackle in our
community by getting out there and befriending our neighbours. Go on do it today! Do let us know how you get on. Did you know that microplastic fibres are shed from synthetic clothing when they are washed and are the main contributors to microplastic contamination of the oceans? Apparently, “due to their small size, microplastic fibres are readily ingested by aquatic life and, as they bioaccumulate through the food chain, they concentrate toxins in the bodies of larger animals”. This resolution is to campaign to find ways to reduce the amount of these fibres released into the sea. More details of this and the other issues on the shortlist are available at: https://www.thewi. org.uk/campaigns/news-andevents/current-news-and-events/ resolutions-2017 Keep smiling! n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE
with Tim Button, Doctor of Chiropractic at Cleve Chiropractic and Next step in Mangotsfield
Blog 37 – A lively start to 2017
A
T the time of writing the last blog, the Christmas parties were in full swing and I was hanging on by a thread. After the Bristol Rovers staff night out I could have been knocked over my either my two year old daughter Molly or my, recently turned one, son, Harry. So it was with trepidation that the famous Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step Christmas party commenced. This year we stayed
local and went to Bottegino’s in Emersons Green, well that was after and before the pub! The night was going well until Practice Managers Kate and Sarah decided to start on the flaming Sambucas. Now for all my younger readers a ‘Flaming Sambuca’ is a type of Exotic African bird …for my older readers, well that’s just what I think I saw. Just to add a little spice to the endurance month of December, we decided to move house…last minute…just before Christmas. We looked at a shiny David Wilson new build house in Keynsham on the 14th of November and as they were so keen to pay our stamp duty and part exchange our house we thought we’d give it a go. Give it a go?! What was I thinking?! I forgot what stress it is moving house and doing it in 5 weeks pushed the boundaries of my already over stretched brain. The solicitors, BLB in Trowbridge were brilliant to be fair, they had to be, but the amount of paperwork and the subsequent problem fixing when you buy and sell a house at exactly the same time tests your unflappability. To add to that getting a mortgage isn’t simple when you own and run a business but Mortgage Express did a sterling job. So in the last week before Christmas on Monday it was all doom and gloom with moving looking impossible; Tuesday evening the Mortgage money
finally came through; Wednesday afternoon we completed and exchanged; Thursday we moved into my Mum and Dads and the amazing RJ Removals packed up our house (they were so good, I am never packing up my own house ever again!); Friday they moved us and with the steadfast help of Molly and Harry, Jenny and Mum and Dad unpacked as I worked my last day of the year; Saturday (Christmas Eve) we drove to Port Isaac in Cornwall to spend Christmas with my brother and his family. The story doesn’t end there. I may consider myself a man of the world but as I was a born and bred Bristolian I am arguably a ‘city boy’. Now I hear from my brother over and over that Cornwall is different, it is a country of its own apparently and recently there have even been reports of an escaped lion killing deer and scaring locals. So on the drive down we were all on the look out for the magnificent beast when with only 20 minutes to go, what appeared to be a goat with wings, flew into my windscreen smashing it and even knocking off my
rear-view mirror. I saw it at the last second swoop in and I may have jumped…just a little. Molly now knows the words ‘Christ’ and ‘that was a big bird’. Not exactly what every parent wants to hear but hey I’m surprised I didn’t say anything else…but she’s right those seagulls in Cornwall are massive, it must be all the extra radiation. At work, January sees all the new year, new you, propaganda and we are no different so James has set up an indoor boot camp for you all in Mangotsfield on a Tuesday morning at 9:30am for an hour after the school run for only £37.50 for 5 classes. He’s also doing personal training 1 to 1 or 2 to 1. You can book a set of 10 1 to 1’s for only £250. For more details please check out the Next Step Centre website.

Pucklechurch’s fighting spirit A TOUGH few matches under our belts and the Puckle team were looking forward to facing Yate 3s in the middle of November, writes Laura Stone. With a team of 12 and Yate being bottom of the table we were optimistic at a great result for us. With many chances we were gutted to concede a goal and face another battle. Luckily the many more chances finally resulted in a couple of goals from Lisa Whitehead and Laura Stone. We win 2-1 (not as great a win as we hoped) but still three points under our belts! The upbeat nature was soon crushed when realisation struck that again we were going to be fielding a team short in numbers (9 again to be exact) for our last league game before Christmas. The double blow being that we would be facing, now top of the table, Redland/UWE. Going into the match not wanting to be too defensive and trying to score goals of our own we packed out the midfield and limited the defenders. A very hard fought battle and a very top team they were. However Pucklechurch finished the game with their heads held high. A defeat of 12 goals to 2 but to score at all against a great side we were proud. That game closed the end of the league for the season but we had a friendly before Xmas to keep up our fighting spirits. Borrowing a couple of players from another club we went out with a couple of substitutes and won the game 3-0 against Bristol and West. Lots of great play by both teams proving that with a full squad we have a lot to move forwards with. Xmas was upon us now and time for a well earned break. Here’s hoping that the new year brings increased availability for the second half of the season to secure our place in division one. If you’re interested in joining our friendly team please contact me on lor84@hotmail.co.uk.
