Work to start on community hall BUILDING work is expected to start this month on the new Lyde Green community hall. Planning permission was granted last September for the community centre and outdoor changing facility for sports on ground next to Lyde Green primary school. Completion is scheduled for late July, and it is hoped the hall

will be ready for residents to use by late summer or early autumn. Lyde Green Community Association (LGCA) has applied to South Gloucestershire council to run the hall once it is completed, and will find out by the end of January whether it has been successful. Resident Bob O’Brien is leading the community

association sub group responsible for the community hall, and said that regardless of who runs the hall, LGCA would work closely with them to ensure the hall meets the needs of residents. He said: “We’re speaking to people who live here, as well as clubs and groups that may Turn to Page 4

NO doubt 2017 will bring its fair share of surprises, just as last year did, but one thing that can be confidently predicted is that the community spirit of our area will continue to grow. In the past three months, we have been struck by the amazing range of talents among local people – and also the great spirit of generosity that abounds. While everyone in Emersons Green was shocked to hear about the fire at the village hall and relieved that no one was hurt, it is also heartening to hear how residents rallied round to support the staff and others affected. Many people are getting involved with neighbourhood projects including the new town hall for Emersons Green and community hall for Lyde.

Avenue hopes to walk it! THE Avenue Café in Emersons Green has been shortlisted for a regional food award. The family-run café in Emersons Way is one of 10 businesses shortlisted in the Best Café category of Food magazine’s reader awards. Owner Costas Kkolos said the Avenue was 12 votes away from becoming a finalist last year, and was hoping that all his customers would cast a vote this year. He said: “We’ve got such a loyal customer base and know most people by name. I’m asking everyone who comes in to vote for us as we got around 800 votes last year and were just a few short of making the finals. “I think what people like about the café is its friendly atmosphere. We’re always ready to have a chat to customers, or be a shoulder to cry on. Lots of

customers have become friends after meeting here.” Costas, who has run cafes across Bristol with wife Flora for 16 years, initially opened the Avenue Café in Emersons Green over a decade ago. After three years it closed while he focussed on other cafes, but then reopened six years ago and has served the population of Emersons Green ever since. The Food awards recognise the best in South West food and hospitality. Other shortlisted Bristol businesses include

Frampton Cotterell’s Poplar’s Farm Shop, Westbury on Trym’s Casamia, and Clifton’s Arch House Deli. The awards shortlist is the result of 29,000 nominations from across the South West. Voting will close on January 4, after which three finalists for announced for each category. The overall winners will declared at an awards ceremony on February 6 at the headquarters of dairy firm Yeo Valley in Blagdon, Somerset. Loyal customers of the

Avenue Café are particularly fond of the regular mezze nights, which see the café open its doors in the evening to serve up a Greek-inspired feast. Costas said: “We don’t normally enter awards because the footfall into the café tells us that what we’re doing here works. Start on community hall From Page 1 want to use the facilities at the community hall. “We’re also looking at what use local businesses and the science park may have for the hall. “The important thing is that the hall is run in a way that best meets the needs of everyone within the community. We want to ensure that the right services and activities are offered.” LGCA ran a survey for residents last month to find out what types of clubs and sports activities people would like to get involved in. The association is also appealing for volunteers to help both with running LGCA, and specifically with running the hall.It hopes residents may be able to donate equipment or offer skills in DIY, marketing, gardening, setting up a website, or helping run a community café at the hall. Bob said: “We need volunteers to get involved and get the community hall up and running, the more the merrier.” LGCA is working closely with the building consortium, and attending meetings with South Gloucestershire council, to make sure the community has a say in all aspects of the community hall.

Call to support young carers THE charity Carers Trust estimates one in 12 secondary aged pupils is a young carer but say many remain hidden. Teenagers arrested POLICE have arrested two teenage boys in connection with a fire in the toilets at Emersons Green Village Hall. Three fire engines and several police vehicles were called to the hall just before 6.30pm on Thursday 24 November when the smoke alarm alerted staff to the fire. At the time the hall was full of people. The room directly next to the toilets was being used by 17 girls aged five to seven for a Rainbows meeting. There were also around 35 youngsters just leaving the hall following a street dance session, and the Beechmere Belles Women’s Institute were about to set up for their Christmas craft event that evening. Village hall manager Viv Roberts said: “It’s caused a big disruption to the hall. We are lucky we have a smoke alarm in the toilets and two fire doors, so the fire didn’t spread. “It will cost £15k plus to repair the damage. The smoke and fire damage is so bad we will need a new floor, new ceiling, new toilets and so on. “We already have signs on the toilet doors saying they are just for hall users but it’s hard to police that. In the future we’ll keep the gents’ toilets locked in the evening because they’re a long way from the reception desk.” She said that the community had rallied around following the fire, bringing in biscuits for the hall staff and providing information to the police.

Rainbows leader Lindsey Naldrett, who was running the group in the room adjacent to the fire, said: “The girls were amazing. They stayed calm and evacuated through the fire door, and we managed to get their coats out too. It was very cold and dark outside. “One of the girls had brought in her “bedtime bunnies” that week to show everyone and was upset because they were left behind in the room. We told one of the firefighters and he was very kind and went into the building to rescue the cuddly toys. “Luckily we’d had a practice fire drill a few months ago so all the girls knew what to do.” The WI managed to contact most members before they arrived at the hall to tell them their meeting had to be

started in the toilets while the hall was in use. “Thankfully the hall was evacuated safely and no one was hurt.” Two boys aged 14 and 15 were arrested on suspicion of attempted arson with intent to endanger life. Both were released on bail until the new year.

‘Midnight green’ footbridge on cards A NEW bridge for cyclists and pedestrians could join Lyde Green to Emersons retail park if planning permission is granted. South Gloucestershire Council wants the new bridge to cross the ring road 125m away from the existing bridge, which will remain in place. The existing bridge is already used more than 600 times a day by pedestrians and cyclists, and the need to cross the ring road will increase as more houses in Lyde Green are completed and new residents move in. Emersons Green residents will also need to cross to and from Lyde Green to use the park and ride once that is completed. Bristol-based WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff has designed the bridge on behalf of the council. It will span 52m of the A4174 Avon ring road, and consist of a main arch with the walkway hung from the arch using stainless steel hangers.

It is hoped the midnight green structure will be a distinctive landmark for road users and residents. It will connect with the existing cycle path on the Lyde Green side, and emerge next to the skate park on the Emersons Green side. Ramps will be included at either side, as well as

steps, to make it easy for cyclists to access the bridge. Emersons Green mayor Rich Nichols said although it might have been desirable to have the additional bridge further away from the existing bridge, its position had been determined by the need to start and finish on land owned by the district council. He said: “The extra footbridge is required to deal with the increased foot traffic to and from Emersons Green and Lyde Green and is situated closer to the retail park and the future park and ride. I believe any measures that can bring the two villages together and also help commerce is a positive for the area.” Engineering consultancy WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff advised South Gloucestershire Council to consider whether pedestrians would be worried about walking alongside the skate park. Its report said: “The close proximity of the skate park

on the western approach to the bridge could make some pedestrians feel vulnerable and concerned about their personal safety when passing the skate park. “Consideration should be given to providing some form of physical barrier or fence to enhance personal safety perceptions.” The council has invited feedback from members of the public until January 6. Resident David Hagan commented on the council planning website that he supported the planning application, but raised concerns about possible lack of lighting for the bridge. He said: “There does not appear to be any lighting proposed either to the new bridge itself or the access footways to either side. “Given that it goes dark at 3pm in winter, this does seem to be very odd.”

THIS amazing creation won Bromley Heath’s icing queen Emma Richards an award at the Cake International show at the NEC in Birmingham. Emma made the model of Roald Dah’s BFG from Rice Krispie treats (Rice Krispies and marshmallows) and cake covered in modelling chocolate and fondant. His stubble and eyebrows are made from painted rice noodles. She said: “Cake International is a bit like the Chelsea Flower Show for cakes and I was really pleased and proud to get a bronze award. “I chose the BFG as I watched the new film with my kids and thought it was really magical. I decided to make him with the dream tree and Sophie on his shoulder. I'd never made a bust out of cake before but love a challenge!” It capped a busy end of 2016 for mum-of-three Emma, whose business is called Little Monster Cakes. She was also a key member of the Bromley Heath WI choir Jam Hot, which appeared on the Gareth Malone television show in November.

Double celebration at accountants STAFF from Copson Grandfield in Mangotsfield are taking part in a double celebration after hiking their way to raising thousands of pounds for charity. The team of eight - Steve Copson, Debbie Copson, Bradley Grandfield, Vicky Grandfield, Teresa Thatcher, Kevin Thatcher, Stuart Andrews and Charlotte Detain - raised £4,612.17 for Action Medical Research after a 40-mile charity night trek on the Cotswold Way in the summer. They are raising their glasses for a second time after being told that out of the 32 teams - made up of 170 participants - across the country which took part, Copson Grandfield collected the most money - 80 per cent of which was raised by the company's clients. Novice to world champion in 5 years How do you go from beginner to world champion track cyclist in less than five years? Jayne Taylor meets Emersons Green mum-of-two Emma Sainsbury-Munn to find out EMMA Sainsbury-Munn had never been a cyclist, preferring to spend her time in the gym. A rib injury in 2011 put paid to a prospective career as a fitness model, limiting her sporting choices. "My chiropractor told me I could either swim, bike or run," said 46-year-old Emma. Most people would concentrate on just one of the three options - not Emma. "I thought I'd do a triathlon but I hadn't swam or ridden a bike for 20 years." After an intensive nine-week training jaunt, Emma entered a novice women-only competition only to discover swimming wasn't her forte. "I couldn't even swim a length but in nine weeks I managed to learn to swim the 16 lengths needed for the competition without stopping. However it was in an open water lake - completely different to a swimming pool. I dived in and started swimming but then all these women started swimming over me. I was like Orka the whale splashing around and was last out of the water. It made me determined to get them on the bike." Emma's determination saw her come ninth overall but first in her age group and, more importantly, third fastest on a bike. "That really encouraged me so I joined a cycle club. I got dropped every single weekend but I was determined not to give up." Her then coach, Chris Davis, also happened to be a track coach and suggested Emma give the track a go. year-old daughter, visited Wales National Velodrome, Newport where she hired a track bike. "I took one look at the bank and thought 'Oh my god!' "I didn't think I'd ever get up there as it looked so steep. As I went round, I was thoroughly enjoying myself - I couldn't take the smile off my face." She went back week after week and started training with Janet Birkmyre, a multi-elite and Masters Champion. "She's an amazing woman and a great mentor. With her and Chris shouting and barking at me every week to keep up and train harder, I made sure I did!" In June 2012 at the age of 42, just three months after Emma started training, she put herself up against Janet at the National Track Championships, taking silver in the Pursuit. "I just couldn't believe it. It was amazing. Chris told me I wouldn't 'podium' so I just thought, 'Oh, yes I will.' "I knew I was never going to beat Janet because she's amazing but it was great trying to chase her!" In the September further glory was to beckon when Emma entered the Welsh Open and Closed Team Sprint, gaining gold with her team mate Siobhan Mullen and silver in the Team Pursuit.

The following month Emma bagged gold in the Pursuit at the World Masters Track Championships. "Yet again I was told by my coach I would get a podium place as I was up against world class cyclists! I actually beat my Australian opponent by six seconds. I was quite chuffed with that!" More recently, in October 2016, Emma took two golds at the LVRC (League of Veterans Racing Cyclists) National Track Championships in the Sprint and 500mTime Trial, as well as a silver in the Scratch race. Emma, who trains six days a week, is keen to encourage more women to take up the sport she calls 'exhilarating'. "We need more women entering track cycling over the age of 40. "If you like cycling and want to try something different, it's something that will increase your level of fitness and the more you practise the better you'll get at it. You learn so many different tactics. It's also a way of meeting other like-minded people." It will involve travelling however, with Newport boasting the nearest velodrome to Bristol but there are numerous sessions available from family tasters to veteran and youth drop-ins and you can hire bikes or bring your

own along. "It's only a half hour journey across the bridge and it can be quite affordable," said Emma. And if you think you're too old to take up a new sport? "Age is certainly not a barrier," said Emma. "There is one lady whose husband was an ex-professional cyclist who took up cycling this year at the age of 55. She actually took gold in the Sprints. We couldn't believe it; everyone was screaming in encouragement." Emma, who is now concentrating on Sprint events, has no plans to retire any time soon, juggling her family life, her carer as a care assistant and her time on the track. "My husband Paul is really great so thankfully I'm able to train at Newport at weekends. My coach is fantastic and makes sure my training doesn't take up family time. "I'm going to carry on competing. I want to be the best I can possibly be." Emma has her sights set on another gold in 2017's National Masters. "I got silver this year and that was the first time I did matching sprinting. I've now got myself a proper Sprint coach, Pete Mitchell, who is a double world record holder so I'm in really good hands. My chances are

WHAT happens when you bring together a group of people, some great ideas and bowls of soup? The answer could be coming to Downend soon in the form of Downend SOUP. Based on an idea that started in Detroit a few years ago, there are now SOUP events in more than 50 towns and cities across the UK and now it’s Downend’s turn. Organiser Ian Browne said: “SOUP is about community crowd funding. People gather together one evening to hear three ideas for making our community better and stronger. After we’ve heard the five-minute pitches, we enjoy some soup, a little entertainment from local musicians and we make our all-important vote. The cause with the most votes gets seedcorn funding in the form of all the donations made by people attending the event, which they can use to kick-start their

project”. Ian, who has spent the past year supporting SOUP in Swindon, added: “SOUP isn’t just for registered charities. Ariella’s a little girl with a very big heart THE mother of a six-year-old girl who raised more than £1000 for charity has publicly thanked everyone who supported her effort. Aymie Elkins-Green was overwhelmed with the support and donations that her daughter Ariella received to raise money for Children in Need and a music therapy group in Bristol. Ariella, who lives with her parents in Lyde Green, completed a sponsored climb at Cribbs Causeway and featured live on the BBC programme on the fundraising night. Despite being afraid of heights she climbed the equivalent height of the London Eye. But Ariella’s kind-heartedness didn’t stop there. She also spent all her birthday money to help fill a car boot full of hygiene and sanitary products, toothpaste and toothbrushes, thermal socks, gloves and hats for homeless people. Aymie said: “I would like to

Dance club notches up double success

A DANCE school in Mangotsfield is celebrating after two of its groups won first and second place in a competition that qualifies them for the European and World championships. The VDance Academy teams competed against 12 other groups at the nationwide United Dance Organisation contest in Newport, where they performed in front of three judges and thousands of supporters. Dance Addix, which is the under 12s group, competed in street dance and won first place and Dynamites, the under 18 group, took second place. Dance Addix and Dynamites have earned themselves a place in the European Championships in Germany and the World in Glasgow later this year. Owner and director Vicky Moody, who started the first class with just a handful of children just over a decade ago, has seen

the academy grow. The Lyrical Senior Group were given one of the most prestigious accolades in dance competition for their dance ‘Homeless’ and they performed at the Welsh Pride in Cardiff in August last year. Vicky has a team of instructors who teach children from age three up to adults, in numerous dance styles including lyrical, hip-hop, disco, street, contemporary, jazz, ballet and show dance. She said: “I am so proud not just of Dance Addix and Dynamites for their achievement but of every single boy and girl at our school. They walk through the doors each week full of energy and ambition and a smile on their face. “Our school is supported by the most wonderful parents and friends and it’s not just about what goes on inside the

dance school, it’s also about the opportunities it creates outside of our walls. “It’s not all about competing, there are many classes for children who just want to come and dance weekly, which is wonderful to see. They still get

Let’s all do the conga! PUPILS at Barley Close Primary School celebrated the festive season in unique style. First they took part in a whole school conga which followed a staff rendition of the 12 days of Christmas which included 11 dancing teachers and five throwing snowballs. Then Year 6 added a twist to their maths by taking part in a festive bake off. Pupils had to work out the ingredients needed

for their technical challenge of making apple or mince pies from scratch, including the pastry. Headteacher Jo Williams and teacher Alison King had the tough job of being Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood and were happy to report there were no soggy bottoms and a great bake was achieved by all. Class teacher Hazel Popel said: “This Bake Off has really made the curriculum come alive.”

THIS time last year I was spending £300 a month on Chiropractor treatment and prescription medication to keep my pain at bay from a musculo skeletal condition called costochondritis. Viaduct repairs: Council looks for 'least bad' option COUNCILLORS will vote this month on how essential repairs to the busiest part of the Avon Ring Road near Downend should be carried out. The stretch of road from Bromley Heath roundabout towards Hambrook traffic lights, which goes over the river Frome, already carries 55,000 cars and 500 cyclists a day and these numbers are set to increase because of the extra housing and employment being created. Officials say that if the maintenance is not carried out, the road might have to shut altogether within a few years. South Gloucestershire Council has got money from the Government for the works, and it is consulting local people about the potential impact before

members of the Environment and Community Services Committee meet on January 18 to decide how to implement them. There are two viaducts - the original one, which was built in 1968, and the northern one, which was built in 1988, enabling two lanes of traffic in each direction. The council needs to shut the older, southern viaduct to carry out strengthening works. This will also enable the creation of a new cantilever composite bridge to allow a safer, separate crossing for cyclists and pedestrians. This will mean two-way, single-lane traffic on the northern viaduct, with inevitable delays on the ring road and increased use of rat runs as drivers try to avoid

the jams. Mark King, the council's highways chief, told a meeting of about 30 residents at Bromley Heath Infant School that there were a number of options for the works, including carrying it out over 12 months, starting next summer, or staggering it over five to seven years. Downend Councillor Jon Hunt said there was a possibility of reducing the time from 52 weeks to 30 by allowing works in the evenings and at weekends,

provided additional funds could be found. Working 24/7 is also being considered. Councillor Hunt urged residents to contact him or other local councillors with their opinions and concerns about the impact of the works, and to lobby local MPs and the Transport Secretary Chris Grayling for the additional money needed. Mr King said the council was committed to dialogue with local people throughout the road improvement project.

n LETTER FROM OUR MP CHRIS SKIDMORE HAPPY New Year— after the heady events of 2016, 2017 is now upon us, and I can hardly believe that it is nearly two years since I was elected as your local MP for a second time. 2016 ended with some really positive news for a long-running campaign I have been running with the families of Ross and Clare Simons, who were tragically killed in Hanham nearly four years ago, in January 2013. I can still exactly recall where I was when I first heard of Ross and Clare’s deaths, and I will never forget attending the vigil at the spot where they were killed on Lower Hanham Road, just a week after they had been killed. Ever since then, I have worked closely with their families, fighting to change the dangerous driving laws so that those who kill or main on the roads through reckless or dangerous driving, should face the full force of the law. At the moment, the maximum sentence for death by dangerous driving is 14 years: Ross and Clare’s killer got just 10 years and 6 months, and may be out in half of that time. This is clearly unacceptable: over recent years, I have called

debates in Parliament, raised the issue at Prime Minister’s Questions, delivered a petition of 20,000 local residents to 10 Downing Street, and even met with the former Prime Minister, together with the families, to press the case for change. Five gold rings ... but are they Fairtrade? MOST of us now know about Fairtrade tea and coffee – but have you heard about Fairtrade gold? If not, let the children of Christ Church Juniors in Downend explain. They are helping to get the message out in 2017 about the issues surrounding gold mining. Asked to give reasons why they would prefer to buy a Fairtrade ring for someone they loved, Year 5 pupils came up with comments such as “because you are not just caring for your loved one, you are caring for the miners” and “a Fairtrade ring means the mines are much safer”. Jonathan Seagrave, one of the local organisers of the Fairtrade Fortnight, said: “I've got a feeling this will be the next big thing. If you a buying a ring for someone you love, do you want it to contain mercury or cyanide or to have poisoned someone along the way? I think people will pay a bit more to be sure that miners work in conditions that meet standards and can get a fair price for their product.” The Christ Church children have made a large piece of Fairtrade gold themed artwork that forms the centrepiece of a display touring South Gloucestershire libraries between now and the end of February. Last week I sat in a local cafe in Staple Hill (Poppins) and listened to two young mums talking about how 2017 was going to be their year of getting fit and how by April they were to run a marathon and drop a good deal of weight. I could hear the excitement in their voices at what lay ahead and was inspired by their energy, but at the same time felt their expectations were extremely high. You see the one word that was missing in the conversation was ‘balance’, the key word that will make targets achievable. So how can you take a balanced approach to a healthier lifestyle and make your goal become a reality this forthcoming year? n Small changes – yes these changes can often make the biggest impact. Start walking – stop driving – be honest with yourself – how many times do you take your car out for a five-minute journey, when it would have

actually been quicker walking than trying to find a parking space. Not only are you helping yourself/your children but also your environment. Stop using the lifts and start using the stairs, start parking further away in the car parks, start moving. n Snack replacements – say goodbye to salt and sugary snacks and say hello to fruit and vegetable snacks – not only are they full of essential vitamins they are actually cheaper. n Exercise – find one you enjoy. If you don’t enjoy it, it simply will not last. You are giving up your valuable time and quite often your well earned money, so make sure it is for you and makes you feel great. n Rest - work hard, play hard but rest well; it’s the most essential part of any day. Do you need to keep your phone on next to your bed? n Plan – my favourite word! Plan your week, your meals, your exercise, your recreational activities – it will make your life

easier and it will be easier for you to stay on track. n Support – I can guarantee if you want to make a fresh start and start to lead a healthier lifestyle that some of your family/friends will too. Find your support network and support each other. Words of encouragement can go a long way. Find something you enjoy as a family – adventurous walks – it costs nothing. n Make it work for you. The biggest excuse people will use is ‘I don’t have time’; it simply is that, an excuse. If you want to make a change badly enough you will find the time. You will often hear people say the only bad workout you did is the one you didn’t do! Try walking up and down your stairs five times while the kettle is boiling. n A positive mind creates a positive attitude – you can do this and you will! n Never done exercise before and would like some financial support to kick-start your journey? Sonia offers advice on ‘clean eating’ A BIOMEDICAL scientist from Mangotsfield is offering free healthy eating advice via her website. Sonia Nicholas, 37, runs the Green Apple Club online community, providing nutritional advice and recipes for people who want to improve their health. After 10 years working at Bath’s Royal United Hospital, plus further work as a science writer and clinical editor, she decided to combine her medical knowledge with her personal interest in healthy eating. She said: “People are bombarded with lots of information on how to eat, but a lot of it isn’t based on science. “Our diet in the past 30 years has changed beyond recognition. Even our own grandparents would have had a vastly different diet to now, when so much of what we eat is processed. “It’s not a coincidence that the past 30 years have also seen a rise in obesity, cancer and other health problems, as our bodies struggle to cope with all the rubbish we feed them.”

Sonia advocates a “clean eating” approach, avoiding refined sugar, white refined carbohydrates, artificial sweeteners, preservatives and additives. To prove that eating a healthier diet doesn’t need to be expensive, all the recipes on thegreenappleclub.com show the price per portion, such as beef casserole for £1.21, macaroni cheese for 45p and home-made baked beans for 49p. Sonia said: “You don’t have to shop in health-food stores and get specialist ingredients to eat a healthy diet. “Everything I’ve used in the recipes comes from normal supermarkets, and the recipes work out even cheaper if you shop at budget supermarkets.” Particularly popular amongst members of the Green Apple Club is the 28-day clean eating challenge, where participants choose to follow one of a range of menu plans for a month and receive support from each other via the website and private social media groups. The next challenge

group starts this month. The website, launched a year ago, has been a hobby for Sonia until now. In 2017 she hopes to start earning money from the site by allowing advertising and through an online shop selling her newly-released cookbook, Clean Eating Recipes For Home Cooks, and other healthy-eating publications. Sonia practises what she

preaches, making sure children Alex, four, and Holly, six, have plenty of healthy meals. She has also managed to stop herself suffering from migraines by changing what she eats. She said: “Healthy eating shouldn’t be a faddy new year’s resolution, but something sustainable that you can keep up all year.”

Some top tips for a healthier new year MOST of us want to improve our health in some way. Perhaps you’re overweight, lacking in energy or battling with bad skin. Or are you coping with a lifestyle related chronic disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure, migraine or cancer. The new year is the perfect time to make healthy lifestyle changes. The key to sticking to your resolve is to keep those changes simple and manageable. There are three key changes that will set you on the path to better health. Cook more from scratch – not all processed food is the enemy, but most modern convenience food contains too much sugar, too much cheap flour and too many preservatives. Eating at least one healthy homecooked meal a day will immediately benefit your health. Cut sugar and artificial sweeteners from your drinks – hot beverages and carbonated fizzy drinks are the biggest dietary source of sugars and chemical additives in the diet. Refined sugars contribute empty calories, with no nutritional value. Sugar and sweeteners have both been linked to obesity, migraine and an increased risk of cancer. Eat more fruit and veg – phytochemical compounds consumed in fresh fruit and vegetables not only protect you from cancer, they also help the body to fight existing tumours. Fruit and vegetables should make up a large proportion of your daily diet. It’s not always easy to make dietary changes, but looking after your body today, will reap rewards tomorrow. It’s never too late to join the windband A WINDBAND based in Emersons Green is celebrating its third birthday this month – and is appealing for new members. Phoenix Windband has grown from a handful of members back in 2014 to have more than 30 musicians attending Monday evening rehearsals at Emersons Green library. Now they have space to take on even more musicians, and are particularly hunting for brass players and percussionists. With members ranging in age from twenties to seventies, the concert band enjoys performing a wide variety of music, from Star Wars to the rarely-performed Philip Sparke clarinet concerto. Conductor Richard Jones has been with Phoenix Windband since its formation. He said: “We try and challenge members to increase their experience and cover lots of different types of music that they may well not have played before.” Committee chair and

clarinettist Diana Howlett said: “We’re open to musicians who’ve reached grade six and above and would welcome anyone interested to get in touch and arrange to attend a rehearsal. “We do two main concerts a year, plus get involved in lots of other events. This year we’re hoping to do some collaborations

with other bands and potentially play at the Parade Gardens in Bath. We also have a spring concert coming up at Chipping Sodbury town hall.” Recent events have included a Christmas concert at Staple Hill Methodist church and playing at Downend’s C In The Park festival.

Tuba player Keith Hunt, 74, from Downend, was delighted when his friends at the band offered to do a surprise performance at his golden wedding celebration last year. He said: “None of the other guests knew it was going to happen. Everyone from windband was there as a guest, along with 100 others at Winterbourne community association, then suddenly they began playing. “I didn’t take up playing tuba until I retired and was looking for something new to try. I’m selftaught, which shows it’s never too late to learn.” The group forms part of Avon Windband Association, which offers adults the opportunity to learn a wind instrument, and has windbands suitable for musicians at all levels. BEECHMERE BELLES WI HAPPY New Year! I hope you have all had a restful and enjoyable Christmas. We are looking forward to our first meeting of 2017 on January 26 when we will be happily renewing membership for existing members and hopefully welcoming some new faces.Our first meeting will be a talk about and exhibition of historical Brownie uniforms. The Girl Guiding organisation is a longstanding and pioneering bastion of girls’ and women’s empowerment, playing an instrumental role in confidence & character building & I’m sure many of us have fond memories of Girl Guiding or have daughters who have been / who are involved, so it promises to be an interesting evening. If 2016 is anything to go by, the calendar of meetings for 2017 will be a year filled with fun and learning that, should enable our members to discover something new in an enjoyable way. We try to vary our meetings to encompass as many different areas of interest as possible over

the year. Although we are a relatively new WI, we strive to be friendly and welcoming to the broadest range of interests possible: young or just young at heart, active or more retiring, outgoing or a reflective observer of events, all are welcome to come and join us this year. In this vortex of child centred activity and obligations it’s easy for parents to lose sight of their own goals and aspirations, a need to “park” their own ambitions until the children are older. Of course, there are plenty of options out there but many take place in the evenings, or at weekends when free time is at a premium or nonexistent even if you do have the energy! During this past year we have been approached by several mums who, through watching their children in our junior classes, have requested a weekday morning karate class. Their argument is a good one, it's cheaper than a gym, more fun than running on your own, intellectually stimulating, and socially engaging. As a result we’ve decided to bite the bullet and start such a class aimed primarily at mums and dads, who are only free after the morning school run, but also open to anyone who is available to give it a go. Firefighters in hot pursuit of safety message FOUR firefighters from the Kingswood station tackled the 5k (three mile) Pomphrey Hill parkrun course dressed top to toe in fire fighting equipment weighing in excess of 20kg (3 stone)! Andy Baker, Scott Cole, Tony Wittcomb and Sean Kendall took on the challenge a week before Christmas to raise awareness of fire safety. Fire is one of the most serious hazards associated with Christmas. You are up to 50 per cent more likely to die in a house fire over Christmas than at any other time of year. A combination of smoking and drinking alcohol are well-known risk factors, but candle fires also claim lives each year. After completing the course at Mangotsfield, Andy, a crew manager for Avon Fire and Rescue and a running enthusiast, said that the experience was exhausting. He added: "Although the run was tiring and challenging, it was a good way to replicate the arduous nature of our job. It's

great to engage with the local community and promote fire safety." Running in full kit would be the equivalent of running in an oven glove whilst carrying twenty bags of granulated sugar. The firefighters each expended more than 1100 calories in 33 minutes - the time that Andy and his colleagues crossed the finish line. Andy was cheered on by members of his running club, the Stanbridge Fliers, as well as other runners and the marsalls from Staple Hill Runners.

He said: 'Thirty three minutes is a great time in which to complete this tough, hilly course and it'll help me get a personal best here next week! " I've been running with the Fliers for a while now and it was great to have them here in such great numbers to support us." Science park set to get a Rotary Club A NEW Rotary Club is being launched this month at the Bristol & Bath Science Park in Emersons Green. An Open Day on Thursday January 26 aims to draw community-spirited, freshthinking people from local residential and business communities. Presentations will be held at 08:30, noon and 3pm, with Rotarians on-site all day and a tour of the Science Park at 1pm. Two established and experienced Rotary Clubs have joined forces to help set up the new club: Kingswood Rotary, who meet Tuesday lunchtimes in Hanham, and Fishponds & Downend Rotary, who meet on Thursday evening in Emersons Green. Rotary spokesman David Lewis said: “Whilst we are always looking for new members to join existing clubs, we believe there are enough new businesses and people in this area to warrant creating a new club. Meetings could be held when members prefer, either before work or around lunchtime. “Initially we are looking for at least eight men and women to form this exciting new club, where the members’ personal and professional skills and resources will enrich Rotary’s existing collective experience. This will

help us continue to strengthen and refresh our ability to support communities both at home and overseas.” “Rotary’s new approach, in founding flexible and accessible clubs, facilitates easier participation for busy people wishing to give something back to their communities. Diverse opportunities to serve exist from mentoring youngsters, fundraising for good causes, helping those in need overseas, to the organisation of family events to encourage new friendships and business opportunities. “Rotarians are active people who not only give back to their communities but have fun whilst doing it. Beavers glimpse world of disability BEAVER Scouts who have been learning about what it's like to live with a disability have raised hundreds of pounds for a charity which helps deaf people. The children, from the 67th Kingswood (1st Mangotsfield) Beaver Scout Group, took part in a sponsored silence in aid of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, raising a grand total of £350. The challenge formed part of their work towards gaining a disability awareness activity badge. As part of the work, the children investigated different disabilities and how they would affect their day to day lives. The 20-strong Beaver group also looked at the Paralympic Games and how people with physical disabilities have learnt to overcome them and go on to achieve great things. Graham and Andrea Daynes, speakers from Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, visited the group at its base at Baden Hall in Northcote Road, Mangotsfield to talk about the charity's work. New town hall for Emersons if Premier Inn expands THE long-awaited Emersons Green town hall could finally be built as part of extension work on the Premier Inn hotel. Planning permission was originally granted for the town hall two years ago, to be built on council-owned land next to the hotel on Westerleigh Road. A contractor began work on the site, but progress halted when asbestos was discovered in the ground that was to be used. Now work could recommence as part of a joint deal with the hotel. Emersons Green town council has negotiated with owner Whitbread to give up part of the council’s land to create 28 additional hotel parking spaces, allowing the hotel to expand. In exchange, Whitbread would build the town hall free of charge, saving the town council around £130k. Whitbread has submitted a planning application to build a two-storey extension to the

existing Premier Inn, adding an extra 24 rooms and creating four new jobs at the hotel. Emersons Green mayor Rich Nichols said: “It has taken over a year to talk through and agree new plans, but I am pleased to say that a planning application which is for the hotel extension, further car parking and a repositioned town hall that is being fully funded by Whitbread has recently been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council for its consideration. “If planning permission is granted it will represent fantastic value for money for the local community.” Once the hall was complete, the town council would run its operations from there, freeing up space it currently occupies in the village hall. The town hall would consist of an office, meeting room, plus kitchen and toilets, as well as one disabled and eight standard

parking spaces. Avon and Somerset Constabulary has raised concerns that the new town hall could be at risk of crime and anti-social behaviour. Crime prevention design adviser Kevin Wilkinson said: “Although the building is positioned fronting onto the main road the existing hedging does obscure the natural surveillance of the building. “The building is also isolated from the existing hotel.” In response, clerk to the parish council Beverley Ewens said that measures would be taken to reduce risks to the new building. She said: “There will be fulllength, electric metal shutters on all windows and doors. “The building will also be alarmed for both intruders and fire and there will be CCTV coverage of the car park and external access points.”

Schools launch Premium Partners scheme DOZENS of business representatives joined leaders, staff, students and parents for the successful launch of Downend and Mangotsfield's Premium Partners programme. The aim is to build links between the two secondary schools and local employers and to equip students with the skills they will need for the workplace. Castle School Education Trust, which runs the schools, already has an award-winning Premium Partners programme for Castle and Marlwood Schools. Will Roberts, chief executive of the trust, told guests at the launch: “We are absolutely passionate about the links between businesses and schools. Our role is to make sure students are ready for what comes next. Businesses can help young people understand what the world outside the school gates is really like. They can inspire them and show them opportunities.” Mark Fuller, head teacher

student as a whole person was also important, and opportunities to learn about entrepreneurship and the world of work were part of that. This was reinforced by two Year 10 students, Archie Kenway and Joel Vadhyanath, who were national winners of the Young Enterprise Tenner competition, turning £10 into a profit of

Under 11s are aiming to win more trophies CARSONS and Mangotsfield Cricket Club are planning for more success this year after winning their first youth trophy i 25 years in 2016. The Pomphrey Hill based cricket club run three Saturday teams, one Sunday team and youth teams from under 7s through to Under 17s and are looking for players young and old for the 2017 season. Andy King, the club youth coordinator and vice chairman, said: "We are very keen to recruit players from reception school year up to Year 12, as well as dads who played in the past, and anyone who has an interest in playing cricket. Disc pain! SO last month I talked about potentially catastrophic effects of sneezing that can cause multiple injuries including disc injuries. I must have put the sneeze of death into the good folks of north Bristol as I have seen nothing but disc injuries (not all sneezing related I should add!). New patient after new patient has blessed Cleve Chiropractic’s doors complaining of symptoms that turn out to be caused by disc problems. There are three regions where people get disc problems, the low back, the neck and more rarely, the thoracic region of the spine. The discs are the bits that cushion the space between the back bones (vertebrae). They are made up of a jelly like middle that is kept in place by concentric cartilage like rings that provide stability. With repetitive stress and often rotational forces the inner jelly can break through one of the outer bands. This happens at some point to most people and it is not

unusual to have no pain at all with it. However, if the forces are large enough and repetitive enough the jelly can break through more layers causing the outer layers to bulge. There are pain fibres in discs so this can cause some pain locally but if the bulge is big enough it can start to squash a nerve and this then will cause symptoms that are technically called “radicular” symptoms like numbness and tingling or even a burning pain somewhere else. A classic example is a low back disc bulge causing sciatica down the leg into the foot and a part of the foot goes numb. These are called disc bulges but if the jelly breaks through the outermost ring and ends up in the spinal canal, then this is called a disc herniation (or a very poor term would be a slipped disc.

Symptoms Discs are not cartoon characters that slip about on the ice!). If the disc herniation breaks off and floats about then this is called a Disc Sequestration. Strangely if this happens it can cause some very varied symptoms but if they are not too bad the body will just reabsorb the jelly and the patient will hopefully heal by themselves. Indeed a good number of disc patients will heal with no help at all between about six months and two years. In the clinic when a patient presents with a disc like history we firstly ascertain if the patient has had any bowel or bladder disturbances associated with the problems. This is just to rule out more serious spinal issues and are very rare. Then we will do an examination that stretches the nerve to test if it has been trapped anywhere along its length, we

test the patients skin sensation for numb patches and test the deep reflexes (like the knee jerk reflex that everybody has had done by the GP). The really sensitive tests are muscle tests. If you begin to trap a nerve sometimes the only symptom is a weakness in a limb. This week I had a patient whose main symptom was a weak tricep (the press-up muscle) and sure enough he had two disc bulges in his neck after a rugby injury that affected the nerves that supply the tricep. If we suspect a disc we may well offer the patient a chance to shortcut the NHS que and refer patients to a private MRI that costs £235 within the week. Chiropractors are qualified to read the MRIs and can show you the problems on the MRI picture itself. When a disc is confirmed there are many options from referring back to the GP or consultant or to, most frequently, treat the injury itself with gentle specific traction, soft tissue work and exercise. From research we know that in four out of five cases we can dramatically speed up the healing rate of discs. In one out of five cases the

patient either needs more time or inevitably ends up in surgery. And on that Happy Christmas bombshell all that’s left to say is that we reached the massive milestone of 9000 patients that attended Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step this month. Keith, Sarah and I went on the Bristol Rovers Christmas night out after the Bury game…don’t ask…I don’t remember!
