Jo steps in to help Lego fans Emersons Green mum Jo Harris has devoted hours to running a trading site for children caught up in the Lego cards craze. PAGES 4 and 5 THE long-awaited play park in Lyde Green is set to open this month. South Gloucestershire Council has confirmed that the facility is almost ready, after a series of setbacks. It will have swings, slides, a roundabout, climbing frames
and other play equipment for children and toddlers. There is also a BMX track, which is likely to become a popular attraction for older children. A council spokesman told the Voice: “The play area at Lyde Green is expected to be open by the school summer holidays. The
developers have experienced a series of setbacks, but are now in the final stages of getting it ready for opening, including obtaining the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) check for safety.” Turn to Page 7

Prepare for traffic chaos: work due to start any day on viaduct repairs WORK is due to begin this month on the Bromley Heath viaduct, reducing traffic on the Avon Ring Road from four lanes to two. It is expected to cause jams of up to three miles and delays of two hours at peak times. Many roads in the surrounding area will be affected as drivers seek alternative routes. However, after consulting local people, South Gloucestershire Council has decided against temporary closure of most “rat runs” because of the impact on people living close by. Old Bromley Heath Road, Bury Hill and Cuckoo Lane are being shut and there will be restrictions at the Hambrook lights for traffic turning on or off the ring road. The work on the stretch of road between the lights and the Bromley Heath roundabout is needed because the 1960s southern viaduct over the river Frome would otherwise be at risk of failure within a few years. The bridge, which carries approximately 55,000 vehicles and 500 cyclists a day requires essential maintenance work on: pier strengthening, bearing replacement, drainage improvements, water proofing, parapet and safety fence replacement, concrete repairs, and abnormal load carrying capacity improvements. The southern viaduct is being shut for the duration of
the project, with all cars diverted on to the northern viaduct. Pedestrians and cyclists will be diverted on to the footway on the northern viaduct. It is hoped that the 220-place park and ride at Lyde Green can be opened early in time for the project. The council confirmed that the main work and contraflow would go ahead this month but could not give a start date. The work is scheduled to take up to a year but it is hoped that a meeting of West of England Local Enterprise Partnership on June 28 will authorise additional funding to enable the timeframe to be reduced to 33 weeks. The council has been holding a further series of information meetings. The last of these are • Tuesday June 27, 6pm to 8pm, Winterbourne Greenfield Centre,
The latest updates can be found on the council’s website www.southglos.gov.uk/bhviaduct South Gloucestershire Council’s head of StreetCare and Transport Mark King said: “We would like to thank those who attended our first round of residents’ engagement meetings which took place in March, and everyone who commented on the proposed traffic management measures and recommended traffic routes while the work at Bromley Heath Viaduct is taking place. MUM Jo Harris has been hailed a star after coming to the rescue of hundreds of local children caught up in the Lego trading card craze. Youngsters in the area have been collecting the sought-after cards, issued by supermarket Sainsbury's, but have been left disappointed after not being able to get their hands on the full set of 140 cards. But Jo, who lives in Emersons Green, kindly came to their rescue, setting up a Facebook page for mums living in BS16 where they could trade cards for free on behalf of their children. Jo, 48, said: "I belong to a Facebook page called Emersons Green Mums, who are wonderfully supportive but I could see the feed was getting full up with requests for Lego cards. "I had at least 100 spares so thought if I started another Facebook page just for mums who wanted to get specific cards for their children, I could get rid of my spares and maybe help a few people out." The new page, called Free
Facebook 'fairy godmother' aids quest for Lego cards Lego Card Swaps for BS16, was at first just made up from the handful of mums from the original group but very quickly another 100 mums had joined. Word quickly spread and Jo found herself dealing with more than 350 people all eager to get their hands on the elusive cards. "People just kept joining. It's worked really well. Everyone has been really wonderful helping each other out. I get spares dropped to me all the time." A set of four 'Create the World' Lego trading cards was given away by Sainsbury's from May 3 to June 13 with every £10 worth of shopping. The chain also sold £2 collectors' albums for children to stick their cards in and monitor which cards were needed to complete their collection.

Jo has lost track of the number of cards she has dealt with but says it must be thousands and thousands. Such is Jo's dedication, she even dashed to a Sainsbury's store in Gloucester Road because she'd heard they had collectors books available which had sold out in stores closer to home. After buying up the books, she immediately put them on the Facebook page to sell at face value. Jo said: "I rang the shop at 9.45pm on a Saturday night to find out if they had any books left and was told they did so I jumped in the car in the pouring

The cards caught the imaginations of young people everywhere, all desperate to swap cards with their friends so they could fill their albums. Parents started to drop their spares to Jo's house so she could match them up with people's requests and before Jo knew it she was spending 12 to 14 hours every day administering her scheme. One child came into school crying because they couldn't complete their book but Jo was able to unite them with their missing cards. Jo, who lives with husband Dave, 16-year-old son Jack and daughter Lucy, 14, said: "I've become a one-stop shop!" The scheme finished on June 13, so things should start to slow down for Jo at some point but at the moment she's still busy. "Out of the 350 members there must be more than 300 who have finished their books as a result of the Facebook page. "So many cards were given away that people ended up with spares they didn't know what to do with. " I thought it would be a shame to throw them away when I knew there would be kids that did want them." It seems Jo's efforts haven't gone unnoticed. "I've had flowers, boxes of chocolates and thank you cards from the children I've helped. One child was so delighted that he star-jumped all the way up my drive to pick up the last card he needed. " It's just lovely to see the kids so happy."

Vital bus link under threat

THE bus service linking Emersons Green and Lyde Green with the north and north west of Bristol is at risk. First West of England, which runs the 18 and 18A, has given notice that it is withdrawing from the route from September 2, 2017, because it is not commercially viable. Bristol and South Gloucestershire Councils are seeking another operator for the service, which links Emersons Green with Parkway station, Bristol UWE, SGS College and Southmead Hospital. A spokesman said: “South Gloucestershire Council is working towards a replacement service for the Number 18 from September 2017 and hope to be able to announce details of this soon.”

Concerns over music festival Yes to housing estate PLANS for a development of 58 homes in Pucklechurch have been given the go-ahead in spite of local opposition.. Knightstone Housing Association wants to build affordable properties for rent and shared ownership on two sites off Oaktree Avenue. The estate will include one and two-bedroom flats and two and three-bedroom houses. The area was originally a barrage balloon centre and later housed RAF Pucklechurch. Part of the overall site towards Back Lane has been designated a village green and will not be developed. Residents objected to the loss of green space and expressed concerns that a threestorey block of flats would be out of keeping with the historic village. Neighbours were also worried about the loss of onstreet parking and the increased traffic the homes will bring. South Gloucestershire Council's Development Control (East) Committee approved the plans at a meeting on June 15, having visited the site earlier in the month. A number of conditions are attached to the planning permission. Knightstone held a number of consultation events in the village over its plans.
ORGANISERS have moved to reassure residents about a music festival in Mangotsfield this month. South West Dance Festival, which will take place at Cleve Rugby Club on July 15, is billed as an event with 6,000 ravers in four arenas. It will have stages for drum and bass, garage and house music, featuring more than 100 artists, and the festival will include bars, food and fairground rides. One resident contacted the Voice to express fears that the rave would cause serious inconvenience and congestion to the residents of Mangotsfield, Emersons Green and Pomphrey Hill. He claimed local people had been “kept in the dark” about the
planned event, run by Innovation Events. Emersons Green Town Council was consulted earlier in the year about the possibility of using Rodway Common as a park and ride for the festival. It declined, and said that if it were approached about a licence application it would object on the grounds of noise, nuisance and traffic in a built-up, residential area. Kimberley Park, manager at Cleve RFC, said coaches would be parked at the club and at Mangotsfield United FC. She said the event would be run under the club’s existing licence. “We are going over and above our licence conditions,” she said.
World champions TWO 12-year-olds have returned triumphant from the United States after the cheerleading world championships. Lacey Sheldon, from Downend, and Kasia McNally, from Kingswood, are members of the Crimson Heat Tigers, who beat teams from all over the world, including the US, to become world champions. The team of 25 girls, aged nine to 15, is the first nonAmerican team to win the Summit world title. Lacey, a student at Mangotsfield School, and Kasia, have been cheerleading for five years. “The music will stop at 10pm and the site will close at 11pm. The numbers will be capped at 4,000. There will be a heavy security presence. “ We are mindful of the impact on people living nearby and we will be sending out lettters out of courtesy to advise them of this event.” Ms Park said it was unfortunate that the organisers, Innovation Events, had given the impression it would be a huge rave, as it is a dance music festival, and the numbers will be no more than for Mangotsfield Festival. A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman confirmed that no additional licence was required for the festival.

Wait for estate nursery goes on FAMILIES with toddlers in Lyde Green will still have to travel to access nursery facilities for the foreseeable future. A proposed nursery for the estate was due to be completed and ready to run by September 2018, but no planning application has yet been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council. A council spokesman told the Voice: “It is anticipated that a planning application for the nursery will be submitted in the near future and the developers are in discussion with the council’s children, adults and health (CAH) department regarding a potential opening date.” A meeting between the providers, school and council explored the option of setting a nursery within Lyde Green Primary School for a year from September this year but this idea has been dropped. Lyde Green Community Association said: “The council had expected a planning application several months ago but this has still not happened. The school have now confirmed that they are unable to host until the [nursery] building is complete, as previously hoped, as they have been asked to take additional pupils sooner than
planned.” Local resident Vicky Denning said: “I am so excited to be a mum with a little boy who will hopefully attend Lyde Green Primary School next year. “It is, however, disappointing that we are yet to have a nursery or pre-school. My little boy attends a fantastic pre-school, however it is a 10-minute drive for us. I would have loved to have a nursery or preschool attached to our primary allowing us to walk to pre-school and for him to start making the school friendships which would hopefully last a lifetime.”

It’s nearly playtime Repairs under way after vandals strike From Page 1
Although the play equipment was fully installed a few months back, one of the main delays in opening the park was the poor quality of the grass. The soil had to be re-dug and sprinkled with new grass seeds, which took a long time to grow and was weather dependent. The park was also a target for vandals. Kelly Adams, chair of the Lyde Green Community Association, said: “The LGCA have been working in partnership with the Consortium (builders), South Gloucestershire Council and Councillor Rachael Hunt to ensure the facilities are open as soon as possible and have made certain that everyone involved understands the importance of the open space to the community.” Residents watched with interest as the park took shape – at first with excitement, later on with disappointment when
delays happened. Tracey Britton, a Lyde Green resident and parent, said: “When moving to the area, it was very welcoming to hear that the community would be having a new park built within walking distance. The park will be such a lovely place for children and parents to get together to play and socialise outside. It will be great for children to meet other local children that they may be going to school with and meet new neighbours. “The park will also give parents an opportunity to meet other parents in the area and make new friends. Lyde Green has such a great community spirit and the opening of the park will only add to that spirit. “Although the build of the park has been delayed and hence the original opening date delayed, as a resident I feel incredibly lucky to have a newlybuilt park on my doorstep and continuous investment in the Lyde Green area.”
REPAIRS have been promised soon following vandal attacks at the Walker Playing Fields on Blackhorse Lane. Two separate fires on May 15 and 19 wrecked play equipment. Neighbourhood PC Paul Fortune said: “These fires have caused significant damage to the swing sets and safety surface and it will cost several thousand pounds to repair the damage. In the meantime, the children of our community have lost their playground. “I’d urge anyone with any information about who is responsible for this to get in touch. Anyone who starts a fire is putting themselves and others at risk and by tying up the fire and rescue service could be diverting resources from a real emergency.” South Gloucestershire Council representatives have inspected the area and made it safe, and are now looking to replace the damaged equipment. A council spokesman said: “As soon as the arson was reported to us, our community spaces officers attended the play area and made the site safe. The swing seats and chains have been removed whilst we obtain quotes to repair the extensive damage caused to the surfacing and swing frames. We are working to get the repairs completed as soon as possible.” Police are asking people who saw anything suspicious in the area, or has any other information to contact officers through the police website, www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact, or by calling 101, quoting reference 5217111601. Alternatively, you can ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Lopresti, Skidmore and Hall voted back in SOUTH Gloucestershire has retained its three Conservative MPs following the snap general election. Jack Lopresti, Chris Skidmore and Luke Hall are all back at Westminster as part of Theresa May's depleted Tory party. Mr Lopresti, whose constituency of Filton and Bradley Stoke includes Downend, saw his majority halved as he beagt Labour's Naomi Rylatt by 4,182 votes. Mr Skidmore, whose closest challenger in the Kingswood seat was Bristol Labour councillor Mhairi Threlfall, also had a reduced majority - down from 9,000 in 2015 to 7,500. Mr Hall, who had a surprise victory over longserving Lib Dem MP Steve Webb two years ago, had a comfortable majority of
10,000 over Councillor Claire Young, who fought the seat for the Lib Dems this time around. All four Bristol constituencies returned Labour MPs. Bristol East's Kerry McCarthy increased her majority and Darren Jones had a surprise result in Bristol North West, taking the seat from Conservative Charlotte Leslie. In Bristol West, which had been targeted by the Greens, Thangam Debbonaire had a 37,336 majority - one of the biggest in the country - while in Bristol South Karen Smith held the seat, gaining an extra 13,000 votes. Conservative Jacob RessMogg kept his seat of Bath and North East Somerset but the Liberal Democracts were successful in taking Bath from the Tories.

Charity rabbits on about bunny car! MEET Chewy. With his long whiskers, pink shiny nose and grey fur, he certainly looks like a rabbit, albeit an extremely large one. But in fact Chewy is a fully working car. He certainly is one of the more unusual adoptions for rabbit and guinea pig charity The Littlest Rescue and will act as a mascot, appearing at events, fairs and fetes. Chewy, a Ford Ka, was purchased by the Staple Hillbased charity from eBay but needed lots of work to pass his MOT and become roadworthy. Littlest Rescue founder Bev Taylor said it was love it first sight, but it was a complete fluke the charity ended up with the four-wheeled friend. "It was on eBay for sale and we thought 'We've got to get that!' We bid on it after watching it daily but someone outbid us
at the very last second. Luckily the person with the winning bid pulled out and we got to get the bunny car." The car was in Surrey and had no MOT but the charity managed to organise for someone to pick him up on a low loader trailer. Bev said: "It failed its MOT terribly to the point someone told us we'd have to scrap it but we thought it meant too much to us to do that. We found a mechanic who was able to repair it and get it through the MOT. "We named him Chewy after one of my own rabbits that passed away. He's got teeth, eyes, whiskers, tail and massive ears. He's definitely going to be quite a celebrity and has already got his own Facebook page." Chewy has to be garaged at night and in inclement weather because his body-work is coated with imitation fur and can't get
Littlest Rescue founder Bev Taylor with Chewy the bunny car wet. On the few occasions Chewy has been out so far, he has proved a huge hit. "He will be used as an educational resource at shows and events to show how special these animals are," said Bev. "I've only driven Chewy to one show so far but the attention that he brings is unbelievable.
People have been waving and flashing us as we drive along. We've even noticed that people have been posting photos on Facebook saying 'Look what we spotted today!'" If you'd like to book Chewy for your event, please contact Littlest Rescue events coordinator Sue O'Reilly on 07855 751692.
Plea for volunteers
A CHARITY that supports struggling families wth small children in Bristol and South Gloucestershire is looking for more volunteers. n MANGOTSFIELD FESTIVAL
Mangotsfield Festival celebrates 25 years
MANGOTSFIELD Festival marked its 25th anniversary in style with a community event that drew more than 4,000 people. Festivities were declared open by the mayor, Rich Nicholls, and the town crier Madeleine Bills, then crowds followed the procession through the village to Cleve Rugby Club. This year’s key attractions included woodcarvers, circus skills, morris dancers, and a dog show. While the Punch and Judy show and the graffiti artist were popular with both children and adults, the arena was buzzing with music and dance performances from local groups of children and young people. In line with tradition, a new king and queen were chosen to perform royal duties. These were Toby and Mabel from Emersons Green Primary School, who were joined on the day by several former kings and queens and received a special memento. Chis Amos, a member of the
festival committee, explained: “The overall impression of this year’s festival was that the atmosphere was far more relaxed and it had much more of a family feel to the event, in keeping with its original aims. This is a big
positive for us and something we will strive to maintain going forward.” Mangotsfield Festival has been held annually since 1992 and this year’s event on June 10 attracted 4,300 people.

n FEATURE EIGHT-month-old Faith was sitting in her high-chair tucking into porridge when her head dropped and fell into her feeding bowl. Mum Jenny Rawling wasn't alarmed, in fact she thought it was cute. But when this happened on several occasions, she grew concerned. On the advice of her father, a retired medic, Jenny and husband Tim took their daughter to Bristol Children's Hospital. Doctors tested the tot for infantile spasms, a form of epilepsy so rare that only 400 children a year in the UK are diagnosed with it. Faith received treatment straight away, however other parents have not been so lucky - the condition is so rare it is frequently misdiagnosed, with sometimes "catastrophic" consequences. The Rawlings, who live in Downend, embarked upon a steep learning curve about the condition and didn't like what they discovered, namely that an incorrect diagnosis can lead to a child losing all the skills they have learnt, including the ability to swallow. Now Jenny has set up a charity - UK Infantile Spasms Trust - to raise awareness amongst parents and medical professionals. Jenny, 42, a vet, said: "It started really subtlely and we didn't realise when Faith showed the first few signs. "She was sitting in her high-chair and would suddenly bend forward and get a facefull of porridge or whatever she happened to be eating. We laughed to start with. I feel

Mum sets up trust after tot suffers rare form of epilepsy awful now but we didn't realise anything was wrong. "Faith then started to have clusters of spasms so her arms would come forward and her head would drop down. It looked like the startle reflex that newborns have, which is one of the things it can be misdiagnosed as. "As soon as it started to cluster we realised something was wrong. We filmed it and sent it to my dad who is a retired paediatrician. He said we should go straight to A&E as he recognised how potentially

serious it was. If my dad hadn't have told us to do that, we would have probably have gone to the GP." Staff at Bristol Children's Hospital gave Faith an EEG, putting electrodes on her head to measure her brainwaves. "We were really lucky because a lot of research into infantile spasms has been carried out at Bristol's Children's Hospital and they were able to diagnose her. However, we later found out that a lot of children have been misdiagnosed by their GP or health visitor, or even by a hospital. Jenny, who also has two sons, Daniel, 10, and Matthew, seven, said Faith was diagnosed the same day as she was admitted. "Within 12 hours of taking her into A&E, Faith started her treatment and was on very high dose steroids for 10 weeks. She

was lucky because that worked for her and she didn't need to go on any maintenance medication. This can vary with the child though and some children need treatment for the rest of their lives." The most common age for infantile spasms to start is between four and eight months, but it can occur as early as four weeks and as late as two years. "If children aren't diagnosed within a month of it starting, the outcomes are much poorer longterm," said Jenny. "A lot of children are misdiagnosed for a long time because it looks quite like reflux and Sandifer Syndrome, a severe form of reflux. If it isn't diagnosed and treated really quickly, it's completely catastrophic for the child's development and children can lose all their skills they have developed. "Part of the condition means

they have hypsarrhythmia which is where the brain becomes completely chaotic and without treatment, they can regress right back to newborn, losing their ability to swallow, to sit and to roll." Faith is now three and a typical healthy toddler, although Jenny is reluctant to say her daughter is "cured". "I'd have to touch a lot of wood if I said that - about 60 per cent of children have other seizures later in life. She's now three and has been seizure-free for two years, which is brilliant but I wouldn't say she's cured." Jenny was surprised to find there was no UK support group for families. "We eventually found an international group on Facebook, which is mostly based in America," she said. "I met a few British people on that group, including a lady who lives Winterbourne, funnily

enough. Eight of us have got together and started a UK charity called UK Infantile Spasms Trust. We just wanted there to be something here in the UK because it's such a devastating diagnosis and people just feel so alone. It's so helpful to have the support of other people who have gone through the same thing." As well as putting parents in touch with each other, raising awareness is also a high priority for the fledgling charity. The first thing the group did was to put together a film made up of videos of members' children. It's already been viewed on YouTube more than 33,000 times. "We know of several children who have been diagnosed more swiftly as a direct result of our efforts so far," said Jenny. Future plans include working with the medical community to raise awareness of the condition. This year, the charity's founders are undertaking a huge

Anyone who would like donate can do so online by visiting https:// mydonate.bt.com/charities/ ukinfantilespasmstrust You can find out more about the charity at https:// ukinfantilespasmstrust.org/ and can visit their public Facebook page at https://www.facebook. com/UKInfantileSpasmsTrust/ There is also a closed Facebook support group for affected families.
INFANTILE spasms (IS) often have a very subtle appearance so it is difficult for parents to recognise that it is a serious problem. The typical pattern is a sudden bending forward and stiffening of the body, arms and legs. Sometimes, the episodes are different, with the arms and legs being flung outwards. Usually, they affect both sides of the body equally. Typically, each episode lasts just one or two seconds, there is then a pause for a few seconds followed by a further spasm. A child having IS may just have little head drops that do not appear to be anything serious. Infantile spasms often look similar to common disorders such as a normal startle reflex, colic, or reflux. IS are in fact much more serious than the type of generalised seizure that most people would recognise, because a child has a chaotic brainwave pattern that may cause loss of skills and brain damage. It is very important to recognise that a child has infantile spasms as soon as it begins because there are medications that may control the spasms. The longer the spasms last before they are treated and controlled, the poorer the child may do developmentally. If you suspect your child might have IS then getting an EEG done straight away is a priority. In the UK, take your child to an A&E department at the nearest big children’s hospital that has a paediatric neurology department.

n CRAFT COLUMN
Sunglasses pouch WITH Summer (hopefully!) here to stay why not create this simple yet so useful pouch to keep your sunglasses looking lovely over the summer months. No more having to search for them at the bottom of your bag! You will need: Piece of fabric measuring 23cms x 23cms Fabric scissors Complementing colour cotton Piece of thick cord approximately 50cms long Ruler Pen/pencil Pins Safety Pin
1. Take your piece of material and fold over and iron a crease 0.5cms from the top of the fabric.
2. Now fold over a further 2cms above the first crease and iron this second crease in place. You have created a folded over flap.
3. Pin the folded over crease in place so that you have created a channel at the top of the fabric.
4. Now either machine or hand stitch the pinned channel in place – both where the pins are located and a line of stitching across the very top of the fabric to create a firm channel.
5. Next, fold the piece of fabric in half with the wrong side of fabric facing out, and machine or hand stitch across the bottom edge and up the side of the fabric, ensuring that your stitching is 0.5cms away from the raw edges of the fabric. Break the thread once you reach the first line of ‘channel’ stitching, then re-join the thread and stitch 2/3 stitches at the very top end of the fabric.
6. Either finish the raw edges of material with pinking shears or machine stitch a line of zigzag stitching along the raw edges, to ensure that the fabric does not fray. Tie off and trim all loose thread ends and turn the pouch you have created right side out and iron flat.
7. Now take your cord and attach a safety pin at one end. Insert this into the entrance of one of the channel you have created and, using the safety pin to guide you, feed the cord through the channel until it has reached the other end.
8. Pull the cord through the channel (ensuring that you hold onto the other end to make sure that it doesn’t disappear into the channel!) and tie both ends together. You now have your completed sunglasses pouch!

The robots are coming
Super success story at Barley Close Barley Close Community Primary School in Mangotsfield has been given the seal of approval by education watchdog Ofsted. Inspectors visited and found it to be Good in each of the six categories used to judge how effective a school is. They said the headteacher, Jo Williams, has brought about "rapid improvements". The last time inspectors visited was in December 2015 and inspectors concluded the school requires improvement. But in less than two years, a different picture has emerged. The report states: "The headteacher provides effective and determined leadership. Leaders have raised expectations...and have brought about significant improvement since the previous inspection." The quality of teaching, learning and assessment is also Good with the teaching of reading particularly effective and the teaching of maths improving "significantly" since the last inspection. Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are given "highquality" support to make sure they make good progress. The behaviour of pupils is good and they are keen to learn and concentrate on tasks set. The report reveals that 93 per cent of parents who responded
to an online survey said their children were happy at the school. The outcomes for pupils is also Good with the majority of pupils working at the expected standards in reading, writing and maths and an increasing number working at, or working towards, higher standards. Barley Close's early years provision was judged by inspectors to also be Good. Inspectors told the school it can improve even further by continuing to strengthen the quality of teaching and ensuring that initiatives for disadvantaged pupils lead to them achieving as well as other pupils nationally. Headteacher Jo Williams said: "The school has been on an amazing journey over the last 23 months. We have focused on the needs of the children and ensured they have received the absolute best care and education at Barley Close. "The support, hard work and dedication of all the staff, families and wider community have led to the rapid improvement and to the school now being rated Good by Ofsted. The school has so much to offer and this report really showcases that. I look forward to continuing the good work at Barley Close and ensuring that our pupils get the very best start that all children truly deserve."

PEOPLE in Bristol have the chance to see robots designed to help with care-related tasks in the home. The Bristol Robotics Laboratory is hosting the first European Robotics League contest for service robots to be held in the UK. Teams from the lab at Bristol UWE at Frenchay and a lab in Birmingham will pitch their robots against each other in a series of events during UK Robotics Week from June 24-30. The assisted-living robots of the competing teams will face various challenges, including understanding natural speech, recognising visitors and deciding who to let in, and finding and retrieving objects for the user. The lessons learned during the competition will contribute to how robots in the future help people to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Associate Professor Praminda Caleb-Solly, Theme Leader for Assistive Robotics at the BRL said: “The lessons learned during the competition will contribute to how robots in the future help people, such as those with ageing-related impairments and those with other disabilities, live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. This is particularly significant with the growing shortage of carers available to provide support for an ageing population.” The BRL is a joint initiative of the University of the West of England and the University of Bristol. The many research areas include unmanned aerial vehicles, driverless cars, medical robotics and robotic sensing for touch and vision. The Bristol event is open for public viewing on the afternoon of June 29 (bookable via EventBrite), and will include tours of the assisted living studio.

n IT HOME HELP Russell Isaacs owns Easy PC, a friendly personal, one-toone computer coaching service in clients’ homes in the Emersons Green, Downend, Mangotsfield, Staple Hill and Kingswood areas. With over 20 years’ IT experience in a wealth of different areas, he helps users, particularly older people, get what they want from from their PC’s tablets, and smartphones. He is also a web designer/builder, photographer, father of two and keen sportsman.
Just how fast is technology moving?
Russell Isaacs offers IT support
Consider this. If car technology had evolved at the same speed as the microprocessor, then the modern version of the 1971 Volkswagen Beetle would travel at 300,000 miles per hour, cost 3p to buy and use one tank of petrol in a lifetime... Like it or not we live in an age of technology and it's not one that's slowing down. In fact it's getting faster and faster. Unlike a few years ago people could choose whether to use this technology but these days we have little choice. It has become almost impossible to access services, get information or communicate without being 'online' in some shape or other. Many of the clients I teach, particularly the older ones,

are initially very reluctant users, getting to grips with tablets and smartphones and pc's because they have to, not because they want to. But almost all of them have realised just how simple many of these devices are to use now . No longer do you have to be some kind of 'computer whizz' to use these things - much recent design has focussed on making devices really intuitive to use and quick to pick up. And these days, they are way more 'idiot-proof" - you can explore away with very little risk of pressing the wrong button and deleting the contents of your device. My message is - don't be afraid ! If you've been the recipient of a tablet or smartphone recently -

dive in and have fun with it. With a little guidance, most inexperienced new users can get online, set up an email address, surf the web and start checking out what their device has to offer within an hour - all with no prior experience. From there it’s a short hop to sharing photos, listening to music - even making video calls to relatives around the world. We may be forced into this technological era, but the good news is it's genuinely never been easier to use! Russell Isaac can be contacted on 0774 775 3764 or at russell@ easypcbristol.co.uk

Hunt for more groups to get SOUP funding
Pigs bring home the bacon at the ‘Ham National’ Organisers at the South Gloucestershire Show are putting on a race with a difference. Pigs might not fly, but they will certainly be going at a fair lick as they trot through the main arena at the show. The pig race is raising money for the show’s nominated charity, Meningitis Now. The pigs are the family pets of Joseph Fossett, who also owns camels, and have been trained to race.
The commentary will be supplied by Joel Dommett, the comedian who appeared on ITV’s I’m A Celebrity over the winter. Darren Hawkins, the organiser of the show at the showground near Westerleigh on August 5 and 6, said: ”Animals are always a core part of the show so this year it is exciting to announce the Ham National.”
AFTER a successful launch in March, organisers of Downend SOUP are now on the hunt for more groups that can be helped by this innovative form of funding. The concept, called community micro-funding, involves people gathering together to hear three ideas that will make the community a better place. They enjoy homemade soup and usually some sweet treats too and vote for their favourite idea. The winning idea walks away with a donation from the community to bring their idea to life. The next Downend SOUP event is on Tuesday October 3 and is again hosted by Christ Church Downend. Ideas can be pitched at www. downendsoup.com.

n VETS’ ADVICE SUMMER is nearly upon us and we can (hopefully!) wave goodbye to the cold, wet winter months. Here are some summer-friendly tips to keep your pets healthy and safe during the summer: • HEAT STROKE: Avoid walking your dogs in the heat of the day, especially if it is a very hot day! Although it might seem nice to be out and about, heat stroke can be fatal in dogs so please beware! Take extra care if your
Summer hazards for pets dog is very fluffy or has a short nose dog (such a Bulldog, French Bulldogs and Pugs) as these dogs find it harder to keep cool in the heat. Signs of heat stroke include: collapse, fainting, very dark urine, and extreme panting. • ADDER BITES: Adders are the only venomous snakes in the UK.
They commonly live in grassy areas and woodlands. When bitten, pets (usually dogs) can develop severe swelling and pain to the area (usually the legs), which can lead to tissue death! If you suspect or see an adder bite please let us know ASAP as there is an antidote - but it must be given quickly. • BLUE-GREEN ALGAE: Most commonly encountered in stagnant water sources (ponds, lakes etc) this algae is very toxic to dogs and cats. Signs include: vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive salivation, anaemia, jaundice, seizures, and even coma! Please avoid letting your dogs swim in or drink from open water sources that look very green with lots of algae. Areas like this are usually signposted so please look out! • SLUG BAIT & RAT POISON: These can cause a variety of signs including bleeding, bruising, vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors, seizures and coma. If
you suspect or see your pet has eaten these, you must let us know immediately! • LILIES: These flowers are very toxic to cats and can cause irreversible kidney failure – NEVER keep lilies if you have a cat! If you suspect your pet has eaten anything poisonous please call us immediately on 0117 910 9352.

Kate Tarr WHAT a superb 41st birthday party! As always we certainly know how to celebrate in style. We were entertained by Naomi this year and the ploughman’s and puds seemed to be perfect for the occasion. Our committee always decorate the room and tables beautifully and the finer details are not lost. Thank you to the ladies who joined the parade for Mangotsfield Festival and the ladies who volunteered on the stand. The stall was well equipped with beautiful crafts and cakes. We handed out leaflets and bookmarks during the day to prospective members. Looking ahead to our July meeting, we will be having a talk about ‘How to Save a Life’ with paramedic Gary. Although we enjoy light hearted meetings, this is one not to be missed. Craft club started bead work in their most recent meeting, it is never too late to join and learn something new Supper club, lunch club and craft club details will be discussed at the meeting. We welcome women of all ages and from any area, you don’t have to live in or around Mangotsfield to join us. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors, you can find out more out our meetings by contacting: mangotsfieldwi@gmail.com or
BROMLEY HEATH WI THIS month our committee had a well-earned break, as the meeting was organised by a group of noncommittee members led by Zoe James. The evening began with voting for our nominated charity for the coming year. The Jessie May Trust was the winning charity and so we are looking forward to raising funds for this very worthwhile charity in the coming year. After this we held a minute’s silence to honour the victims of the recent terror attacks. Then it was over to Zoe, who introduced her daughter Ellie who gave a presentation about her recent experiences in Uganda with ICS, an organisation for young people making positive changes around the world. Ellie was in Uganda from February to May this year, working to improve the business structure, work which will have an impact on the rest of society. Ellie’s experience was in marketing and she told us of her work at the weekly farmers’ market and of life in Kampala, the capital. It turns out that rural Ugandan
people hate getting wet in the rain, so they stay indoors on rainy days and the markets just stay closed! Good job that doesn’t happen here, isn’t it! After Ellie’s excellent presentation, we settled down to a quiz compiled by Zoe and friends. It was good fun and of course we had drinks and tasty nibbles to help our grey matter! Many thanks to Zoe, Ellie and helpers for a great meeting. Next month we will hanging out with the bikers from Freewheelers who deliver urgent medical supplies across Bristol and South Gloucestershire. n PETER'S VISION
Quality time with patients HAVING recently had a fun half term which culminated in a family party, I then had time alone while my darling Jo had a few days away with her University friends. The time apart really did make me value the time we have together all the more. Quality time with our patients, is something that I came to realise as important and valuable, a good few years ago now. Giving each patient our undivided attention means that we can listen and understand their eye or vision concerns. This builds trust as well as meaning we can better care for the things that really matter to our patients in their day to day lives. One such area of personal interest to me as well any so many of our patients is reading. I am regularly told “I can read just fine thanks, all I need to do is hold the book a bit further away now.” Whether or not you feel the need for longer arms (it’s just the birthdays don’t you know), this is very easy to help with. Our tailormade reading glasses or contact lenses are a great solution! Our younger patients often have more fundamental reading problems. Many come to see us reporting words that move, jumble, or even hop skip and jump! The specialist assessment we carry out for our young readers shows up the underlying cause which we can

usually treat very successfully. My love of gadgets and tech has led me to investigate more advanced options for diagnosing the cause of reading difficulties - many patients are referred to our clinic with tracking problems. Diagnosing why, is the key to successful treatment. Our latest bit of kit is an eye tracker which we discreetly attach to the computer and then ask the patient to read a passage of text from the screen. The technology is similar to that used by gamers and web designers. A harmless infra-red tracking bar watches the reflex from each eye as the patient reads. The software then displays this data as charts and images and can also replay

a slow-mo video showing each eye movement that the patient made while reading. This really helps our patients understand better how they use their eyes and once treated, lets us show the improvements they have made! This process all takes time, the initial visit can be a good three quarters of an hour (much like our extended eye exam) and then another few appointments for eye and reading training. The results though are most definitely worth the time investment. To be told by parents that their child has gone from a reluctant reader to choosing a book to read by themselves is hugely rewarding all round. Appointments for reading
vision assessments, including eye tracking, or extended eye exams can be booked by calling 0117 965 4434, via our website or you are very welcome to pop into our Fishponds practice and say Hi! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Bandstand fire warning
n ON THE BEAT with PC PAUL FORTUNE
Take care of your keys THIEVES are continuing to try to steal keys in order to take cars. In South Gloucestershire we’ve seen incidents in which they’ve fished through letterboxes for keys. There have also been cases where thieves have broken into homes in order to get car keys. Often these incidents happen overnight, while the household is asleep. One such thief was disturbed by the householder having gained access to a property in Downend at about 3.15am on Monday, June 12. The suspect made off with the keys and a wallet, but it’s believed the car was not taken because the family had been woken. Please don’t leave your keys in the back of the door, or within sight of a window or the letterbox. It’s also a good idea to fit a cage or box behind the letterbox. Always lock up and set the alarm, if you have one, at night as well as when you go out. You
PC Paul Fortune can find more home security advice, and information on joining Neighbourhood Watch, on our website, www.avonandsomerset. police.uk We’re also asking parents and carers to make sure their children know the dangers after fires
were started in playing areas in Downend and Bromley Heath, and in a bin in Mangotsfield, in May. The swings were destroyed and the safety surface damaged in two fires in the Walker playing fields on Blackhorse Lane, while thankfully no damage was caused in a similar incident in the play area off Queensholm Crescent, Bromley Heath. It will cost several thousand pounds to repair the damage at the Walker playing fields. Several cars were damaged in the incident in Mangotsfield. Three teenage boys who were arrested were released under investigation and our enquiries into the incident continue. Obviously anyone who starts a fire is putting themselves and others at risk, and by tying up the fire and rescue service could be diverting resources from a real emergency, not to mention facing prosecution for a serious offence.
VISITORS to Page Park are being urged to be extra vigilant after a fire was started near the bandstand the evening before the Big Lunch family day. Staple Hill councillor Ian Boulton noticed the remnants of a fire at the base of the steps to the bandstand when he arrived to help set up for the Big Lunch at 7am on June 4. He said: "It was largely melted plastic which turned out to be a wheelie bin that had been set alight. We were able to move the debris and tidy up just in time to able to start the event on schedule. I expect most people would have had no idea what we arrived to." Councillor Boulton said police have been working with the community to tackle a number of incidents in the park recently.he Friends of Page Park recently raised £90,000 to restore the bandstand and to see how close this fire was to damaging it doesn’t bear thinking about."

There’s no catching Blackhorse - again!
July, 2017
BLACKHORSE Primary School's cross-country running team has won the Boys, Girls and Overall CSET league for the sixth year in a row. The league, organised by the CSET Sports Partnership in conjunction with Bristol and West Athletics Club, pits eight to 12 schools against each other over a three-race series. The position of every runner in the team is added together to calculate the team positions. With a win at the Colston’s Inter-county competition and winning two shields at the South Gloucestershire cross-country championship, as well more than 30 individual race medals, the school is once again ranked as the highest performing school for endurance running in the county. The youngest runner, Fred, seven, can run a mile in under six and a half minutes - faster than most adults - and the oldest runner, Harry, in five minutes 40 seconds. At this year's league, both the boys and girls teams finished their respective competitions several hundred points ahead of the second placed schools and the girls B team (made up of younger runners) also came third overall. Headteacher and club coach, Simon Botten, who recently came 13th in a 52-mile Ultra-marathon, said: "The school's Track Team has become something which the children aspire to take part in. We currently have over 50 children turn up for training each week all year round to train in all weathers. The ethos of the team is that success is nothing to do with some natural talent but just persistent practice." Superb individual performances by runners from Barrs Court, Mangotsfield and Beacon Rise denied the team gold medals in the individual boys’ and girls’ competition. Mr Botten added: "The nicest thing about the sport is that it's all about individual effort and working for the team, so we see the children supporting each other. One highlight this year was a letter we received from a parent from another school who wanted to thank our girls team who, having finished their race, ran with a struggling competitor from another school to encourage them to the finish line." It appears that the Blackhorse runners' enthusiasm for endurance running lasts well beyond primary school, with many pupils going on to run for local running clubs and with six ex-pupils going on to represent the South West region.

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE
with Tim Button, Doctor of Chiropractic at Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step in Mangotsfield
Blog 40 – ART and the IAAF World Championships! IT’S 6.34am on a sunny Saturday and I’m sitting on a desolate train, on my way to London to attend a training event for the IAAF World Championships that are being held this summer in London. It reminds me of the training and build-up to the London 2012 Olympics. There will be lots of people and excitement and a group of people, most of whom don’t know each other, all getting together for a common goal, to help at and enjoy this massive world event. I will be joined by the other chiropractors that have be selected for the honour of working at such a prestigious event. Selection for the Championships was tough and only seven or eight chiropractors made it to cover both the World Paraathletic Championships and the IAAF World Champs. I’ve been selected to do the IAAF Championships in August after the Paras. I’m pleased that the Paras are on first this time, before the IAAFs. The UK supports its Para athletes
as well as anywhere in the world and putting on the event first before the able-bodied event is a testament to the UK’s commitment to disability sport. As many of you who have read my previous blogs know, I have done a lot of work in disability sports and worked with the GB Paralympic teams for both London and Rio. I wish all my friends and patients in the Paras luck this summer. I also work for athletes that will be competing in the IAAFs so I am looking forward to being involved and working behind the scenes as a chiropractor in this one-off UK event. I am sure in a couple of months’ time I will be writing all about it! It’s now 7am exactly and we have just stopped at the beautiful city of roundabouts, Swindon, and the train is getting a little bit busier including a very interesting looking couple carrying their folded bicycles down the train still wearing their helmets, hi-vis and looking far too hot and bothered for this time of the morning. Earlier in the month, before I found myself on this journey to London, I managed a few quiet nights away in Dubai to help
29
celebrate my friend and Bristol Rovers player, Lee Brown, marry his childhood sweetheart, Sophie. It was a lovely time, if not a little hot, hitting 42 degrees Celsius at times. The locals say that it’s on its way to 55! Only a week after I arrived home from Dubai, I went on a four-day course held in Bristol to increase my skillset. The course was excitingly called “Active Release Techniques (ART) of the Lower Limb” and is the final of three courses (Upper Limb and Spine) that has taken me round the world and four years to complete making me full bodied certified. ART is the gold standard of soft tissue techniques and adds so much to any practioners skillset. You cannot work on the PGA pro tour without being ART qualified. The standards to pass are formidable as you need to re-qualify every year and I had the joy of taking an exam on the final day. This exam made slightly tougher by, instead of studying for the exam all Saturday night like everybody else was, I went to my wife’s best friend’s wedding at the Bristol Lido, which was lovely but I couldn’t help thinking about how
to treat achilles, knees and ankle sprains! Anyway, I still passed with flying colours and am now proud to be the only ART practioner in the south west of England and the whole of Wales. I plan on helping my new chiropractic Associates become qualified in ART as well helping us maintain our status as world class sports injury clinic. After stopping in Reading at 7:24am the train is finally beginning to fill up as we approach London Paddington. I can almost feel the great City waking up ready to welcome more guests of all varieties and I wonder what the day has in store for me as I head towards the Olympic Stadium for our training day. I am sure I will meet some fun people with interesting stories of their own. I’ve said it before but I can’t help saying it again…I love my job.
