Junior football club aims for victory over arsonists LEADERS of Emersons Green Junior Football Club have vowed to make sure the club rises from the ashes following a devastating fire at their headquarters. Arsonists are thought to have started the blaze at the clubhouse on the club’s ground in Blackhorse Lane, which destroyed the boiler room and damaged electrics, water supply and pipework in the building. Club chairman Paul Thomas said it appeared the culprits had planned the attack, disabling the CCTV cameras outside the building and breaking a kitchen window. Mr Thomas said: “The boiler room inside the Emersons Green JFC club house was broken into and set on fire. This building is attached to the side of the club house, but luckily the fire was put out by the fire brigade before it could spread further. “In the last few months, there have been constant problems around the playing fields, with fires being set on the pitches and Turn to Page 4

Super! Scarecrow trail proves popular SCORES of people enjoyed the second Scarecrow Trail organised by Emersons Green Village Hall. Twenty-eight local businesses and residents made scarecrows one more than in 2016 - and with 160 trail sheets sold, the event proved a popular attraction. Over the course of May 20 and 21, children and parents followed the trail in search of their favourite scarecrows. Some of the scarecrows were scattered around the Emersons Green Retail Park and Library, while others were displayed further across the estate, on residents’ front gardens. Viv Roberts, manager at Emersons Green Village Hall, said: “The standard of the scarecrows was very high this year.” The theme for 2017 was Films, which gave the scarecrow makers the freedom to create some of their favourite characters. From Pinocchio and Peter Pan to Spiderman and The Smurfs, the scarecrows covered a range of popular family movies.
Maps with the location of the scarecrows and trail sheets were available to purchase for £2 from the Village Hall. The trail sheets featured a puzzle or riddle that could be solved by using the answers displayed with the scarecrows. There were several cash prizes up for grabs – The Best Community Scarecrow and The Most Correct Answers in the Trail. This year’s winning scarecrow was Fantastic Mr Fox, with second prize going to The Lego Movie and third prize to Spiderman. The winner with the most correct answers was the Etter family from Emersons Green. Ms Roberts said: “Our local businesses and regular hirers of the Village Hall sponsored the event, which enabled us to issue cash prizes to the winners. Emersons Green Village Hall would like to thank those who followed the trail and special thanks go to those who displayed a scarecrow.”

n NEWS from Page 1 vandalism and graffiti around the grounds. Our large sign at the entrance of the ground welcoming people to the club was also smashed down.” Police have told Mr Thomas they do not have enough evidence to press charges over the fire but have asked local people to report any suspicious or anti-social behaviour by calling 101. Parents and coaches rallied round to clean up after the fire on April 30 and local businesses helped with repairing the lights
and restoring the CCTV. Major repairs are needed, which will mainly be funded by insurance, but the latest incident has encouraged the club to consider a more extensive refurbishment of the old clubhouse, which was inherited from Cadbury Heath FC. Mr Thomas said: “The club is looking at raising money to firstly update and decorate the existing facilities, that haven’t been changed for a long time, and possibly extend the clubhouse. This would create a hall space so we can do more for the community by creating a possible

youth club, where we can help get children off the streets into a safe environment.” James Cullen, a parent and coach, has already set up a crowdfunding page with the aim of raising £10,000. He explained: “We are a growing grassroots club and do not get any outside funding. All the money we make comes from the kids’ subs, holding events and the bar revenue, but this isn’t enough to rebuild the clubhouse due to having to pay bills, maintain the grounds and pay for the groundsman.” Meanwhile, the leaders are
determined that the 200 or so children aged four to 15 who belong to the club will not suffer because of the fire. They are continuing with their weekly training sessions and activities. Emersons Green JFC which is affiliated to the Gloucestershire FA, was founded in 2014, and has grown rapidly from three teams to 11 – six boys’ and five girls’ teams. There are plans for two more next season. Mr Thomas said: “The club offers local children a safe, friendly and fun place to enjoy football.”

Drugs stolen from treatment centre A MAN has been convicted of stealing prescription drugs from an NHS Treatment Centre in Emersons Green. David Bamford, 47, of Quakers Road, Downend, was found guilty following a trial of the theft of Fentanyl and Diamorphine from the centre, where he worked as a lead operating department practitioner – a role which involved assisting the anaesthetist during operations. He was also convicted of causing a public nuisance, which relates to the contents of ampoules being tampered with and changed. He appeared before Bristol Crown Court last month where he was sentenced to two years in prison. In June 2015, staff at the centre, which is run by Care UK, discovered that a quantity of ampoules had been tampered with.
The ampoules had been broken off at one end, emptied and then filled back up with other substances, including a less potent painkilling drug and what is believed to have been water. Further enquiries revealed that in the months leading up to this discovery, there was a spike in instances of these drugs being damaged and consequently destroyed. DC John Shanahan said: “David Bamford was stealing prescription drugs from his workplace for his own use. Tests showed he had both of these drugs in his system and he admitted in court he was taking small doses as a painkiller for a bad back. “Our investigation discovered he was frequently accessing areas where these controlled drugs were kept outside of normal working hours; he was involved in an unfeasibly large proportion of the breakages which were
recorded and he appeared to involve himself unnecessarily in clearing up after operations. “An audit of controlled drugs held at the centre also found that on 20 May 2015, Bamford ordered 20 ampoules of Diamorphine from the pharmacy at the premises and three days later he collected the order from there. Only 10 of the Diamorphine ampoules were put into the centre’s stock. “On one occasion a member of staff asked Bamford for advice after finding broken Diamorphine ampoules among the stock and he advised them not to bother reporting the incident. “Bamford’s actions had the potential to put the public at risk but thankfully it’s not believed anyone was harmed as a result of medication being tampered with. “We’ve worked closely with Care UK throughout this lengthy and complex inquiry and I’d
David Bamford
like to thank them for all their support and assistance in this matter.”

Red-letter day as Phyllis, 95, gets Civil Defence medal at last DESPITE serving as a civilian telephone operator and firewatcher during the Second World War, Phyllis Green thought she would never be awarded the Civil Defence Medal she so richly deserved. Her service records were lost when the fire station she served at was bombed and this meant Phyllis was unable to claim her medal following the war. But thanks to some painstaking detective work by her family, Phyllis was finally
Phyllis on fire duty in London with Red Watch during the Second World War
presented with her medal during celebrations to mark her 95th birthday. It came as a complete surprise to Phyllis, with her family saying she was "overwhelmed" with emotion. Phyllis, who lives in Woodlands Court, was born and bred in South London and had qualified for the award by serving as a civilian telephone operator and fire-watcher with the Auxiliary Fire Service in Battersea from 1941 to 1944, including during the London Blitz. Her son Chris Green said it was a case of providing evidence to prove Phyllis had indeed served, which was tricky as her records were lost. Chris, who looks after Bromley Heath Scout and Guide HQ, said: "I had to do a bit of detective work! First of all I went to the War Office but they only deal with war medals so they pointed me to the Cabinet Office. I went to them and discovered my brother Cliff had already tried to claim her medal some years ago but was unable to provide sufficient information so he didn't get anywhere. "I think I was very lucky because the guy who was in charge of civil medals at the Cabinet Office was so helpful and encouraging. I kept saying I didn't have anything else to show him but he said 'Come on, let's not give up!'"
The civil servant asked Chris if he could provide any photographs of his mother during her years of service and Chris then came up trumps. "I went off and in mum's collection of old stuff I found some old photos and there was mum in her uniform!" But there were still gaps to fill so Chris quietly recruited his son Robert to casually ask his grandmother questions about her time in the war. Her answers were mentally recorded and the official forms completed. Chris said: "The man in the Cabinet Office then told me the information we had provided was sufficient and Phyllis was justified in having the medal. He sent it to me with a very nice letter congratulating her and wishing her a very happy 95th birthday." Phyllis was still in the dark until her recent birthday bash where her great-granddaughter Eloise presented the medal to her, surrounded by 23 other family members, including her three sons Chris, Cliff, and Colin, seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. There was even a special visit from her niece all the way from Australia. "She was absolutely delighted and overwhelmed," said Chris. "After the war lots of things were lost or had been disposed of and she thought she'd missed the opportunity. We just pieced

everything together from stories she told us but what clinched it were the photographs we found. I wouldn't have got the medal though without the Cabinet Office being so helpful." Phyllis married Maurice on April 26, 1941, her 19th birthday. Maurice served in the British Expeditionary Force, taking a week's leave to marry his sweetheart. Phyllis moved from South London to Wimborne in Dorset in the early 1980s. She moved to Downend after her husband died nine years ago so she could be closer to son Chris, who moved to the area when his company relocated to the South West in the 1970s.

n NEWS HUNDREDS of South Gloucestershire parents, including many from the Emersons Green area, have been taking action in protest against cuts to education funding. The Fair Funding For All Schools campaign began in the spring as it became clear that a proposed new national funding formula, designed to reduce inequality in the way education budgets were allocated, was not going to benefit 98 per cent of schools, including those most in need. As reported in last month’s Voice, more than 300 people attended the first South Glos meeting in Hambrook on April 6, the day after campaigners had urged councillors to back their concerns. Theresa May’s decision to call a snap general election brought the matter into sharper focus, with supporters being encouraged to question candidates about their views on school funding and a number of hustings meetings being organised. South Gloucestershire
June, 2017
Parents rise up to battle school funding cuts receives some of the lowest per-pupil funding in the country so head teachers, school staff, parents and students are angry that they will face more realterms cuts in the coming years. Some schools are warning parents that the pressure on their budgets - including increased pension and National Insurance contributions and rising bills will mean some tough decisions. Staple Hill Primary governors have written to families saying the school faces a £100,000 cut in the 2018-19 financial year - equivalent to a monthly contribution of £33 per child. “The school needs to take drastic action,” they say. “We will be looking at options such as: * reducing staffing levels * changes to school hours * increasing class sizes * reducing provision such as
breakfast clubs, after-school clubs and school trips." Eric Mutch, a parent governor at the school, told Emersons Green Voice: "These cuts will affect every parent, regardless of their political persuasion." About 100 parents and teachers attended an Education Question Time at Abbeywood School chaired by Dr Lisa Harrison of UWE Bristol. The four candidates contesting the Filton & Bradley Stoke seat agreed that schools had received more money but increases in student numbers and other costs meant head teachers faced a real-terms funding gap. Jack Lopresti, who was MP for the area from 2010-17, was consistently booed when he argued that the Conservatives had put more funding into schools, with audience members
saying it did not reflect the actual needs. Concerns were expressed about the threat to the jobs of teachers and teaching assistants and the impact on children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. South Glos and Bristol parents, teachers and many children joined a Fair Funding for Schools march in Bristol on May 20, with an estimated turnout of 5,000. Councillors of all parties on South Gloucestershire Council, at its annual meeting on May 17, welcomed the actions of the Fair Funding for all Schools campaigners. They unanimously passed a motion praising and endorsing the group's aims and vowing to write to the Government immediately after the election on June 8 calling for increased funding for all schools.

After the Voice went to print, the team were due to play at Ashton Gate in the final of the Woodcock Shield, after again beating Bedminster Down 2-0 in a tight semi-final. Head of PE Tristan Hawkins said everyone at the school was incredibly proud of the team. "We realised early on that they were a special group - and they just keep getting better and better. They are unbeaten in all of Bristol and Gloucestershire and they are role models for younger students," he said. Two of the boys are already on the books of Bristol Rovers and one's at Bristol City.

Lyde Green tackles Big Spring Clean Sat 5th & Sun 6th August - Gates open 10:30am
VOLUNTEERS turned out to support a Big Spring Clean organised by Lyde Green Community Organisation. Two sessions were held on Saturday May 20, involving the team of trustees, Marie Burke from Knightstone Housing, and 10 residents. The teams used equipment loaned by South Gloucestershire Council. Charlotte Dixon, a resident who attended the event with her family, said: “The event was really well organised and a great effort by everyone involved. It showed a great community spirit and it was lovely to meet more Lyde Green residents. While there weren’t too many of us on this occasion, we hope that more people will get involved next time.” The route included Willowherb Road, Jenner Boulevard, the footpath past the new BMX track and park, Howsmoor Lane and the green space behind Lyde Green Primary School. During the threehour session, the team collected approximately 20 bags of rubbish and recycling, leaving behind cleaner streets, pavements and green spaces for everyone to enjoy. Kelly Adams, chair of LGCA, said: “We took part in the Big Spring Clean to encourage a sense of pride in Lyde Green. It was something proactive that the community could do to make a real difference. We feel it went really well, especially considering how bad the weather was on the day.” Looking to further improve the communal space in the area, the LGCA team is encouraging residents to get involved in the Big Spring Clean initiative after the event. Ideas include organising litter picking sessions on individual roads, weeding and tidying up the plants outside homes, etc. Ms Adams added: “Following the event we will speak to the developers and consortium to ask them to clean up after themselves and we would encourage all residents to do the same.”

A warm welcome to vistors from Pringy PUCKLECHURCH played host to a party of 22 visitors from its twin village of Pringy in France. The four-day trip included trips to Dartmouth, Bristol, the Royal Mint at Llantrisant and Cardiff Bay. The twinning link between the two communities started in 1988 with the signing of charters and annual visits taking place. A spokesman said the latest visit, which included a supper and skittles competition in the Village Hall Social Club, had been a great success. “In the evenings families ate together where the food and wine was plentiful. Old friendships were renewed and memories shared; there was much laughter. Pucklechurch Twinning Association is planning its usual summer events: a race afternoon, a barbecue and of course the Cafe du Pringy at Revel.

n GENERAL ELECTION SPECIAL
Hitting the campaign trail again after just two years VOTERS are going to the polls this month for the second general election in two years. Most readers of Emersons Green Voice live within the boundaries of the Kingswood constituency while parts of Lyde Green lie in Thornbury & Yate and Downend comes under Filton & Bradley Stoke. Four candidates Conservative, Labour, Lib Dem and Green - are contesting each of the three seats. If the polls are correct, the defending Tories - Chris Skidmore in Kingswood, Luke Hall in Thornbury & Yate and Jack Lopresti in F&BS, - will hold on to them. Kingswood has in the past been regarded as a marginal and in 2015 a host of big names visited the area in support of Mr Skidmore, who has been the MP since 2010. Few Ministers have been spotted this time, although the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson did drop in briefly. In Thornbury & Yate, where MrHall won a surprise victory over long-serving Liberal Democrat Steve Webb in 2015, the Lib Dems' Claire Young hopes to take it back for the party this time, but the decline of UKIP might scupper her chances. Bristol East, which Kerry McCarthy has held for Labour since 2005, is being targeted by the Conservatives' Theodora Clarke, who also contested the seat in 2015. Bristol West is the Green Party's number one target, with Euro MP Molly Scott Cato aiming to take the seat from Labour's Thangam Debbonaire.

We’re not scared! Families turn out for annual Pucklechurch Scarecrow Trail CROWDS turned out in force for the Pucklechurch Scarecrow Competition and Trail. The event over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend was organised by St Thomas a Becket church and featured 43 scarecrows. The theme for the contest was “someone beginning with S” and participants voted for their favourite scarecrow - Squirtle, made by the Phillips family. The winners
of the trail were the Hawkins family. The vicar, the Rev Stuart Young, said: “The two days were full of fun and it was lovely seeing so many families out and about in Pucklechurch, talking, Googling and walking. We hope the trail also benefited our local businesses as many people come from outside the village to do the trail each year. “The Scarecrow Trail helps St Thomas a Becket to maintain the church building and services to the community. It enables us to connect with Pucklechurch and it provides a celebration for and of our community which we trust is a reflection of God in community with His people.”

Festival prepares Book in - and help out for its 25th birthday DO you love reading? Would you like to connect with others in your community and share your love of reading with them? South Gloucestershire Library Service is taking part in an innovative community project - called South West: Region of Readers - with six South West library services. With support from Arts Council England, the project is being developed with The Reader, an award-winning charitable social enterprise working to connect people with great literature through shared reading. As part of the project the library service is looking for Reader Leaders for Staple Hill Library. Reader Leaders would facilitate a weekly shared reading group at the library. They would receive full training from the Reader and on-going support from the Reader and the library. A meeting will take place at Staple Hill Library on Tuesday June 27 from 2pm to 3.30pm to introduce the project and explain more about the volunteering opportunities available. The meeting will give an introduction to The Reader and Shared Reading with a special shared reading taster session to see what it’s all about. If you are interested in attending, please email the library at staplehill.library@southglos.gov.uk or call 01454 868006. If you are interested in volunteering but are unable to make the meetings, please call Samantha Weaver from the Reader on 07812 238 532 for an informal conversation about becoming a Reader Leader.
I’m a Celebrity star to visit South Glos Show A COMEDIAN who came close to winning the ITV show I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here last year is to be special guest at the South Gloucestershire Show. Joel Dommett will be at the Henfield showground during the weekend of August 5 and 6. The performer is currently on a UK tour, but is taking time out of his schedule to come to the show. Joel isn’t the only attraction at the show, which last year saw 27,000 visitors come through the gates. There will be stunts from a top motorbike trials rider, the Rockwood dog display team as well as a special country arena. Organisers are also raising money for the charity Meningitis Now with a ‘Ham National’ pig race.

MANGOTSFIELD Festival celebrates its silver jubilee this month as the event continues to go from strength to strength. As always, the festival on June 10 will start with a parade through the village followed by the formal opening. There will be lots of stalls, music, song and dance in the arena, a dog show, lots of activities for all ages - some traditional, some newer - and it all finishes with live music on the main stage. Organisers expect to attract at least 5,000 people. They hope these will include some of those who have attended previous festivals, since the first one in 1992, and can share memories from when it used to be held on the green in front of the Lamb pub.
They have also invited former festival kings and queens, some of whom probably have their own children by now, to make a nostalgic return. Mangotsfield Festival is run by a team of volunteers and money raised is given in grants to voluntary and community organisations. In 2016 it helped fund the Mangotsfield village defibrillator and made awards to four local groups, The Kingswood Bus Project, Mini Mangos, St James Church Hall and Stanbridge Fliers. You can contact the organisers by email at committee@mangotsfieldfestival. co.uk To find out more about Mangotsfield Festival visit http://www.mangotsfieldfestival. co.uk/

Grand efforts give Jack's Fund a boost THE Downend charity Jack Banks Star Tribute Fund is within sight of its latest fundraising target for Bristol Children's Hospital. Paula Banks and her family are aiming to pay for a £70,000 refurbishment of the bone marrow transplant area on the children's cancer ward. This follows their feat of raising more than £100,000 for the hospital following the death of Jack from leukaemia in 2008 after four years of treatment there. The money raised has paid for a conservatory and playroom at the hospital as well as providing a jukebox, emergency palliative care bags, Wii fits and the popular Captain Jack's treasure chests, which contain toys and treats for young patients. Paula said they were now about £10,000 away from the target for the isolation rooms upgrade. A third 'Pop Go the Legals' night at The Tunnels organised by her employers Osborne Clarke brought in £2,850. Staff and customers at Porto Lounge in Fishponds have also been backing Jack's Fund, which is part of the Wallace and Gromit Grand Appeal. They have held bake sales, craft days and quizzes and smashed their £500 target. Paula said she was delighted by all the support the fund continues to receive from local people. “We are looking forward to this refurb,” she said. “ It will make the rooms more welcoming for children by bringing in the same theme as the playroom and oncology areas of the unit as well as making the rooms more functional for the patients, their families and the medical team.”

Downend's gift of pencils to African pupils NEARLY 1,000 pencils have been sent from Downend to a school in an extremely poor area of east Africa. The next step is to raise money for desks for some of the pupils at the school in Kumi, Uganda. The link with the Bazaar School (named because it is in the bazaar area of Kumi) has come about through the charity Mission Direct, whose staff members Richard and Jan Bacon attend Christ Church Downend when they are in the UK. Both the church and Christ Church Infant School are keen to develop a partnership with the eastern Ugandan school, which has more than 150 children in each year group. Richard and Jan have described how some pupils are crammed on to the few desks while the rest sit on the floor at the front of the class and have to strain their necks to see the blackboard. Sunday school children at Christ Church have raised money for the pencils by saving
5p coins in spice jars. Now the infant school head teachers, Anna Martin and Sarah Helm, are helping their pupils build links with Bazaar School. They have sent drawings and photos via Richard and Jan so children start to learn about the differing school experiences

between UK and Uganda. Bazaar School is due to have two new classrooms this year and CCI hopes to raise funds to buy desks for those classrooms. The cost is ÂŁ30 a desk for three children. If you would like to donate, please contact the school.

n VETS’ ADVICE SUMMER is nearly upon us and we can (hopefully!) wave goodbye to the cold, wet winter months. Here are some summer-friendly tips to keep your pets healthy and safe during the summer: • HEAT STROKE: Avoid walking your dogs in the heat of the day, especially if it is a very hot day! Although it might seem nice to be out and about heat stroke can be fatal in dogs so please
Summer hazards for pets beware! Take extra care if your dog is very fluffy or a shorter nosed dog (like a Bulldog, Frenchie or Pug for example) as these dogs find it harder to keep cool in the heat. Symptoms of heat stroke include: Collapse, fainting, very dark urine, extreme panting and unresponsiveness.
• ADDER BITES: Adders are the only venomous snakes in the UK. They live in grassy areas and woodlands commonly. When bitten animals can develop severe swelling and pain to the area (commonly the legs), which can lead to tissue death! If you suspect or see an adder bite please let us know ASAP as there is an antidote but it must be given quickly! • BLUE-GREEN ALGAE: Most commonly encountered in stagnant water sources (ponds, lakes etc) this algae is very toxic to dogs and cats; signs include vomiting/diarrhoea, salivation, anaemia, jaundice, seizures, and coma! Please avoid letting your dogs swim or lick open water sources that look very green with lots of algae. Areas with lots of algae are usually signposted as well so please look out! • SLUG BAIT & RAT POISON: These can cause a variety of signs including bleeding, bruising, vomiting/diarrhoea, tremors,

Disposable nappy Tim Bowles becomes scheme is on its way our first Metro Mayor A DISPOSABLE nappy collection scheme should be under way across South Gloucestershire later this year. The council trialled a free service in January, then extended it to more families, including some in Emersons Green, in the spring. The scheme offers separate nappy bags for disposing of baby nappies, wipes, nappy sacks and cotton wool. Families were each given a supply of 60 nappy collection bags, which were collected every two weeks with the black bin. A council spokesman said: “There are currently about 300 households using the nappy collection service, and the response has been very positive. We plan to have the nappy collection service available to all households with children aged five and under very soon. The bags will be available to order online via our website: www. southglos.gov.uk/nappies.” With babies going through approximately 50 nappies a week, disposing of nappies in a separate bag makes it easier for families to manage waste. The service will be even more important from the autumn, when the council plans to roll out smaller black bins to most households. However one issue raised by some people who trialled the service was the use of plastic bags, which can be easily ripped out by scavengers. Local resident and user of the scheme Marcie Thomson said: “The nappy bins prevent
my waste bin from filling up and it frees up much needed space. Even though I recycle everything, I find the black bin isn’t big enough for a family of six when you have a baby in nappies.” In addition to this free service, South Gloucestershire Council also introduced Happy Nappies – a reusable nappy scheme aiming to encourage parents to change to environmentally-friendly nappies. The spokesman said: “The scheme, which is available to all households, has been promoted through social media and roadshows, and a wider campaign is planned at the same time as the full rollout for the nappy bag collection service. The service is part of a West of England partnership scheme called Nappy Change for Good to promote real nappy use across the region.” South Gloucestershire residents can buy a reusable nappy kit from the council website for a discounted price of £128. The kits are provided by Bambino Mio and delivered for free to council residents. Each kit contains: 15 Miosolo all-in-one nappies, 50 Mioliners (biodegradable nappy liners),1 Miofresh (nappy cleanser), 1 nappy bucket and 2 laundry bags.

CONSERVATIVE Tim Bowles has been chosen as the first regional mayor for the West of England. He triumphed in the “metro mayor’ elections which took place last month in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset. Mr Bowles, a councillor in Winterbourne, narrowly defeated Labour’s Lesley Mansell in the second stage of the contest. The other four candidates, Lib Dem Stephen Williams, independent John Savage, Green Darren Hall and UKIP’s Aaron Foot were eliminated after the first round of voting. The post has been created to allow devolution of some powers, funding and
responsibilities from central Government to the regions. Mr Bowles will work with the leaders of the three local authorities, Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, Matthew Riddle, leader of South Gloucestershire Council and Tim Warren, leader of B&NES.

n HEALTH
Listen to your heart – it could be beating out a serious warning IN June it is National Heart Rhythm Awareness Week (5 - 11 June) and a consultant at Spire Bristol Hospital warns a heart beating faster than usual might be a sign of much more than just a flutter! Palpitations – the speeding up or changing of your heart beat – can be caused by a variety of things and the excitement of seeing a loved one can be one of them. But in some cases they can be associated with much more serious conditions. Dr Ashley Nisbet, a consultant cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist at Spire Bristol Hospital, explained: “You may feel your heart pounding or beating irregularly – often for just a few seconds or maybe minutes – or sometimes it seems like your heart missed a beat. “These symptoms may seem alarming but, the truth is, in most cases they are quite harmless. However, they can also be a sign of more serious problems involving heart valves or heart muscle function. “Some heart rhythm abnormalities, namely atrial fibrillation, can increase the risk of a stroke in some susceptible individuals so it is important to detect this to allow us to treat patients to reduce their risk.” Dr Nisbet has extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of palpitations
and heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). She has particular expertise in ablation of complex atrial arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation and arrhythmias in adults with congenital heart disease, as well as expertise in the assessment and treatment of patients and families affected by inherited arrhythmia syndromes such as long QT syndrome and

Brugada syndrome. She also has many years of experience of general cardiology including the assessment of chest pain, breathlessness, and syncope (fainting). “It is wise to be aware of palpitations and how long they last and how often they occur. For many patients simply eliminating caffeine and reducing stress is all that is required to settle symptoms down. “If the episodes of palpitation last a long time or occur frequently, or if they make you feel light headed or faint I’d recommend you see your GP. They can then refer you to my clinic for assessment which will involve an ECG (electrocardiogram) and sometimes further tests to help clarify whether the palpitations are caused by an abnormality of the heart rhythm.
Email: sales@emersonsgreenvoice.co.uk
When we understand what is causing the symptoms, we can then explore the treatment options.” she said. “If you are worried about palpitations then the worst thing you can do is to keep it to yourself. Most palpitations are not due to a life threatening rhythm problem and some simple investigations can provide great reassurance. However, some arrhythmias do require more specialised treatment and, as with so many health problems, the sooner we detect the problem, the better your treatment outcomes will be,” she added. If you are looking for more information about abnormal heart rhythms, the causes, symptoms and treatments then you can book onto Spire Bristol Hospital’s patient information evening. On Thursday 29th June at 7.00pm Spire Bristol would like to invite you to listen to a discussion by Dr Nisbet, who will talk to an open group about this topic. She will even be providing free pulse checks for those interested. You can book a place on this event by calling Spire Bristol Hospital’s patient treatment advisers on 0117 980 4080 or email info@spirebristol.com

Band strikes up in park
Police appeal after assault in park
STAPLE Hill Salvation Army are taking their evening service to Page Park once a month during the summer months. The events, called Page Park Praise, take place on the second Sunday of each month at 3.30pm following the successful launch on May 14. Between 200 and 300 people enjoyed the experience which featured the band The Songsters as well as junior musicians. A shower of rain interrupted proceedings for a short period but no one seemed to mind. A craft tent, which gave children a chance to make badges, have their faces painted and complete many other games and puzzles, was packed to capacity for the duration of the event. Future dates for Page Park Praise are June 11, July 9, August 13 and September 10.

POLICE are trying to trace a dog walker after a man was assaulted at Emersons Green Park. A 20-year-old man was walking home from an evening out when he was knocked to the ground, kicked and punched by two young men who demanded money and his phone. It happened just before 11.30pm on Thursday, May 11. The victim said he passed a group of four young men sitting on a bench on Emersons Green Lane and that they followed him before assaulting him near the playground at the park. He described seeing an “elderly” man walking what he said was a German Shepherd dog and officers are keen to speak to this man. Military veteran inspires writers A FORMER Commander of British Forces in Afghanistan visited Mangotsfield School to hold a series of writing workshops. Colonel Richard Kemp, who completed 14 tours of duty around the globe, became an author and campaigner after he retired from the army.
He co-wrote a book called Attack State Red, which aimed to put readers into the boots of a fighting soldier. Col Kemp spoke to Year 11
boys about his career and his views on issues relating to war and conflict before supporting the students in some extended writing practice for
their GCSE English language exams. Head teacher David Spence said the visit had been inspirational for the students.

The children, from Sunbeams Day Nursery, sang songs with people living in Badminton Gardens, an extra care housing scheme run by Hanover Housing Association. The 24 children, ranging in age from nine months to four years, shared the actions to songs such as Wheels on the Bus and Chick Chick Chicken whilst showing off the hats they had made as part of their Easter celebrations. n AROUND THE WIs
BEECHMERE BELLES WI At our most recent meeting we enjoyed getting crafty with a ‘DIY Pamper night’. Members worked in small groups to make their own beauty products from scratch, including lipbalm, sugar scrub and soap. It was lovely evening, not only because everyone was able to take something unique home to treat themselves with, but because we had so much fun making it! It was a great opportunity to have a chat and be social. May’s meeting will see us enjoying a picnic in the park (weather permitting) and there are lots more fun activities planned for the rest of the year. Why not come along to one of our meetings to say hi? We meet on the fourth Thursday of every month at 7.30pm at Emersons Green Village Hall. We are a friendly and diverse bunch of all ages and we would make you very welcome!
who participated in the May ‘Resolutions’ meeting. As always it was emotive and thought provoking. If any members felt inspired to submit a resolution for 2018, let the committee know. It is the chance to have your voice heard about what needs to change with the backing of over 208,000 members. Looking ahead to our 41st birthday party on Monday 26 June, we will be entertained by Naomi this year and there will be ploughman’s and puds. I am sure there will be some drinks but members or visitors can BYO (within reason ladies). There is no dress code or theme this year but those of you with an inner ‘rock chick’ feel free to express it. Supper club, lunch club and craft club details will be discussed at the meeting. We welcome women of all ages and from any area, you don’t have to live in or around Mangotsfield to join us. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors, you can find out more about our meetings by contacting: mangotsfieldwi@gmail.com or looking at our website: www. mangotsfieldwi.org.uk

Each year WI branches nationwide vote for the resolutions it would like the WI to campaign on nationally so we discussed the impact of chronic loneliness on health and wellbeing. We also learnt about how tiny fibres shed from synthetic clothing contribute to microplastic contamination of the oceans. We felt the WI could make an impact on both these issues so voted for both campaigns to go forward to the National WI conference. system! You just drive in and they load in the compost and you pay them - simple! There was a bit of discussion about the best way to get rid of those pesky slugs – will we ever find the perfect way to stop them eating our prize plants? John talked to us about different types of compost for different purposes and gave us tips on planting up a hanging basket, with the opportunity for members to join him at the front to help demonstrate how to do it. John had also brought along a couple of pre-planted hanging baskets and those, and the demonstration one, were raffled raising £90 for our charity Survive. After the talk and demonstration, members rushed to the front to buy some of the plants and other garden items that Adam and John had brought with them. That saved a trip to the garden centre this weekend! Feedback was excellent from both gardeners and non-gardeners and many of us were inspired to get out there and work on our gardens at the weekend. There was also the chance for members to sign up to our Afternoon Tea Party on the 25th June, which promises to be a fun-filled, cake-consuming opportunity! We love cake! n NEWS AN exciting £1million plan has been unveiled to bring one of Downend’s oldest buildings into the 21st century, providing a community hub for young and old alike. Church leaders have finally revealed their ambitious project for Christ Church Downend following years of consultation. Although they have already raised half the money, they are hoping for community support as they face the challenge of funding the other £500,000. While the plans are very much about modernising the church and making it relevant to today’s society, part of the scheme is steeped in the area’s rich past. A new ‘Grace Room’ will overlook Downend Cricket Ground as a tribute to the area’s most famous son - the legendary cricketer WG Grace. A state-of-the-art sound system will mean the church can put on more concerts and gigs as well as hosting conferences. Christ Church vicar, the Reverend Jo Vickery, said: “Exciting times are ahead for Christ Church and for all of us who live locally. “The vision to make one of the oldest and most significant buildings in the area ready and relevant for the 21st century is about to become a reality. “The changes in 2017 are part of a story of constant change since the original church was built in 1831 as each generation sought to adapt the building for the needs of the time. “Following extensive consultations over many years, plans are now in place to radically improve the potential of Christ Church Downend as a place where community is built, creativity is celebrated and Christian spirituality can be explored and deepened.” The main changes include: n Creation of an adaptable central space by laying a beautiful stone floor and replacing pews with high quality seating
£1m vision of hope for church and community n New underfloor heating, lighting and AV systems will extend the church’s capacity to host concerts and conferences as well as enhance the range of styles that worship can be offered throughout the week n The whole of the lower floor will be on one level, all pathways around the church upgraded and external lighting significantly improved n A simple prayer chapel will offer space to find stillness and time to reflect and connect with God n An enlarged kitchen will enable the church’s ministry of hospitality to grow n A different side entrance will be made at the end of the path from the car park and the new Grace Room will overlook the cricket ground n The CAP office (Christians Against Poverty) will be part of extended office space for staff n The Garden Room, formerly a choir vestry, will be a light and airy space,

making it ideal for the various community and church groups such as parent and toddlers, the gardening group, craft group and the bereavement group that already use other parts of the church. Work is expected to start in the autumn and last nine months. During that time Christ Church will be closed, but the life of the church will continue and the Parish Office and the Hall will be open as normal. The church’s 10.30am service, with groups for children and young people on Sundays, will take place at Christ Church C of E Junior School in Pendennis Road thanks to the backing and support of headteacher Pippa Osborne and governors. Rev Vickery said: “As a church we see this initiative as a once-ina-generation investment in the future and we are committed to paying for this project by giving sacrificially. “We are trusting that God will continue to be faithful as he always has been. The work will cost in the order of £1 million. Over half of this has already been given or raised in other ways. We

have also tithed our giving so that we have been able to pay for the building of a brand new church in Moldova, the poorest country in eastern Europe, in partnership with the Charity Transform Europe Now (TEN). This has made a massive impact in the tiny village of Ursoaia as Pastor Misa and the small Christian community there express God’s love in acts of kindness and compassion among the poor and marginalised.” Rev Vickery added: “The challenge now is to find the remaining £500,000.” Anyone interested in helping the church meet its target can donate or pledge money up until September. The church’s Building4Life team will look at additional ways of raising the money, including applying for grant funding. If any individuals or businesses would like to know more about the project and how to play a part, please visit www. christchurchdownend.com or get in touch with Maggie Nichols and the Building4Life Team by emailing building4life@ christchurchdownend.co.uk

An update from the Lyde Green Neighbourhood Watch THE Neighbourhood Watch scheme is now up and running in Lyde Green. There is a team of nearly 25 volunteers who have various roles including Coordinators that cover the 10 zones in Lyde Green and others who are working to get the scheme formally set up. We are already close to having 100 residents on our mailing list and Facebook group and hope to continue to grow this. Neighbourhood Watch Signs Many people know about the Neighbourhood Watch because of the signs, and it is important to have signs in place to alert potential criminals as this actually helps to reduce crime. The signage costs £12.50 for 2 small street signs for lamppost placement and we are also looking into having larger signs at the main entrances into Lyde Green too. We’re hoping to receive
donations to cover the Neighbourhood Watch signs but to cover such a large area, it will cost a significant amount. We’re hoping to receive donations from businesses to cover costs for most of these signs but we’re still looking for some additional funding and have therefore set up a crowdfunding page: https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/lydegreenNHW We are hoping to receive the funding we need over the upcoming weeks and that we will be able to purchase these signs and start putting them up throughout June and July. In the meantime, we are able to provide window stickers to residents which can be placed in
car and home windows. Please get in touch if you’d like window stickers. Meet us at the Summer Sizzler Event We’re also looking forward to having a stand at the LGCA’s Summer Sizzler on Saturday July 8 in Lyde Green where we hope to meet residents and promote the new Neighbourhood Watch scheme in the area. n ON THE BEAT with PC PAUL FORTUNE I’M delighted to tell you that my colleague PC James Rochford has been named Avon and Somerset’s Neighbourhood Officer of the Year. He was presented with the award last month after being nominated by a member of the community who described him as “my rock”. We’re really proud of him. We’ve been working to tackle problems with nuisance motorcycles on Siston Common. We do have powers to seize vehicles which are being used in an anti-social way and recently one of our PCSOs was able to do just that thanks to a prompt call from a member of the public. The owner will now have to pay more than £100 to get the motorbike back. We hope this will
serve as a warning to others, but if there are further problems please call straight away on 101. As we’re heading into summer a quick reminder about keeping your home secure. An open window or door can let in more than a breeze. It only takes a burglar a moment to walk away with your phone, handbag or wallet while you’re in the garden or another room. Always secure windows and doors if you’re not in the same room, and lock up and set the alarm at night as well as when you go out. There’s more home security advice on our website, www. avonandsomerset.police. uk, where you’ll also find information about joining or setting up a Neighbourhood Watch. Remember, if you see
someone acting suspiciously around a neighbour’s property, call the police straight away. If they’re obviously breaking in, ring 999. Otherwise, call the non-emergency number 101: our operators are on hand 24/7. Finally, we’ve relaunched our Safe Places service, with a new 24/7 number to help people with communication difficulties stay safe when they are out and about. Once registered, an individual can call the Safe Places number if they find themselves in a crisis situation, such as if they are lost, feel scared or upset and don’t know what to do, or if they have been a victim of crime. Register at www.avonandsomerset. police.uk/safeplaces or by filling in a form at a police enquiry office.

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE
with Tim Button, Doctor of Chiropractic at Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step in Mangotsfield
Blog 40 – Hard work pays off MAY was a month that was so busy inside and outside of the wonderful world of chiropractic for me. It started with a patient of mine who is a landscape gardener with a bad back called Andy. He has been coming in to see me for the last couple of months with a low back disc injury and is now well on the mend through a combination of traction, gentle alignment, soft tissue work and exercises. We managed to get him better despite not taking time off the heavy manual work that he does each day from putting fence posts in, to laying patios and planting trees. Instead we discussed many ways in which he could adapt his work to make his life easier and reduced the repetitive stress on his back. There are many lessons in Andy’s work adaptions that could spark ideas for everybody’s lives. Firstly and with a word of caution we decided on a getting a low support only to be used for short periods of high low back stress
like loading his truck with patio slabs. Low back supports should not be worn for long periods as they can weaken the back. Next we discussed the importance of doing any heavy lifting with a second person like a labourer, halving the stress and making jobs much quicker. When I asked him about the other common major stresses that hurt his low back he described hammering in fence posts. When I pushed Andy for a solution he explained that there was an electric drill that can bore the hole for the fence post taking out the huge amount of force needed to hammer it home but it was expensive. When we compared how much money he would lose for a day’s work, let alone a week or month’s work due to back pain the expense seemed far less for a tool that could help install thousands of posts in double quick time! Finally and with undoubtedly a large price tag, Andy suggested to me that he could get his truck converted to a ‘tipper’ truck saving him hours of back breaking shovelling of material with just a satisfying push of a button. Like I said over the last couple of months of helping Andy
37
with his back I have come to know him very well and when we are not laughing about stories from rugby tours he showed me photos of some of the work he has done and needless to say that he has just finished laying a rather lovely limestone patio out the back of my house! Thank goodness his back was fine. I would never have lived it down if he hurt it again doing my patio! So if anybody needs some landscaping or a new patio then please let me know! After completing a training event for the strongest disabled man a couple of months ago it was now time for the real thing. I met a chiropractic colleague from London and together we travelled to east Kent for the event. Britain’s Strongest Disabled Man is an event like no other. It is very similar to Strongman competitions held around the world except the athletes have also had to overcome a disability like losing a leg in an accident or military operation, having cerebral palsy or being visually impaired. The events are obviously adapted for disability but the core elements are still there like lifting stones and cars
to pulling trucks. The strength, physical adaption and will power that these guys have is humbling to watch. It is an honour to have worked alongside them helping them achieve a level of greatness that surpasses anything that I have seen in football, rugby or athletics. It was fitting that the 4 times world champion Magnús Ver Magnússon was the referee and presented the winners medal to former soldier Mark Smith who lost his leg after being shot seven times in a live training exercise. Mark deservedly won but there were heroes and real stories everywhere. On a sad note this month our family lost its patriarch when my Grandad, my mum's father, passed away peacefully in his bed aged 90. You were a wonderful Father of 3, Grandfather of 7 and Great Grandfather of 8. A true Officer and a Gentleman…you will be missed x
