Council accused over skatepark 'promise' A FATHER who raised money for a skatepark in memory of his son who was killed in an aircraft accident says the council has reneged on a promise to offer further facilities for young people. Gordon Clapp, 74, is facing the tenth anniversary of his son Jamie’s death this year after the light aircraft he was travelling in crashed into a field and burst into flames. After Jamie’s death on July 8, 2007, Mr Clapp threw his might into fundraising £100,000 for a skatepark in his son’s memory. His dream was finally realised in April 2011 when the Jamie Clapp Memorial Skatepark in Emersons Green was opened. But Mr Clapp, who lives in Mangotsfield, claims South Gloucestershire Council had promised to add a picnic area, BMX ramps and artificial grass verges around the site. “We said we would raise £100,000 for a skateboard park Continued on Page 3

Ten years on, let’s finish Jamie’s memorial Grieving Dad’s plea to council From Page 1 and we have done that,” Mr Clapp said. “The council said they would put artificial grass around the outside, put a picnic area behind, BMX ramps on the other side and install automatic lighting but all they’ve done is put in one piece of false grass near the front. At one point they even said they would probably put a little cafe in. “It’s now been 10 years since Jamie died and six years since we opened the park, and it’s not been done.” Pilot Robert Gunter, 34, from Downend, invited Jamie for a ride in a light aircraft from a farm airfield near Clutton as a treat for his 14th birthday. The plane, which took off at a very steep angle, stalled between 200 and 250ft before it nosedived, bursting into flames and killing both Gunter and Jamie. It was later revealed Gunter was an inexperienced pilot and had taken high levels of the drug ecstasy. Mr Clapp was told the insurance company would not pay out because Gunter was under the influence of drugs and this had invalidated any claim. Jamie, a student at Mangotsfield School, was passionate about skateboarding and his family and friends felt the park would be a fitting tribute. Their campaign was boosted after Mr Clapp won just over £40,000 in the ITV Big Lottery Fund’s People’s Millions contest. Mr Clapp said: “It will soon be 10 years since Jamie died and I miss him every day. I have a photo of him beside my bed and I kiss it every morning and every night. here wasn’t a person who didn’t like Jamie. He was well thought of by his school and by his mates. I was a single parent for about four years and he was helpful to me all the time. We used to do car boot sales to raise money and were always together. “I’m 74 now and not in the best of health so I want to get

things sorted now so it is done properly in memory of Jamie. “It’s a nice skateboard park but it’s being let go. I’ve contacted the council many, many times. Everything has been said verbally over the phone so I’ve not got anything in writing. I was also in touch with the MP Chris Skidmore.“Every year, the council tells me ‘We haven’t got the funds, we’ll do it next year’. But next year never comes. We kept our side of the deal now they need to keep their side of the bargain and do what they promised.” A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: “We have been in dialogue with Mr Clapp since the skatepark was originally constructed and have explained that we are unable to carry out any further improvements unless additional funding is secured. However, we are always looking to identify new funding opportunities to help improve community spaces in South Gloucestershire. “Following discussions with Mr Clapp, we trialled installing artificial grass on one of the stone embankments, however as it was purely aesthetic and did not offer any safety enhancements, this did not prove to be cost effective.”

Council has failed vulnerable children - Ofsted

DOWNEND councillor Jon Hunt has apologised following a damning Ofsted report which revealed "critical weaknesses" in South Gloucestershire Council's services to vulnerable children. Councillor Hunt, the chairman of the authority's Children, Adults and Health Committee, spoke following a shock report published by the Government watchdog which rated the council's services to children in need of help and protection as "inadequate". The 47-page report has led to calls from Unison for an inquiry into how the authority's children's services have been allowed to reach this point. Inspectors published the report following a four-week inspection last November and December for children in need of help and protection, children looked after and care leavers. While adoption services were rated good, it concludes that overall services in South Gloucestershire are inadequate. A total of 973 children have been identified as needing the council's children's services. Councillor Hunt said: “I share the disappointment in the outcome and I feel it is only right to apologise to those children and their families who have not received help and support quickly enough. The needs of children, especially vulnerable children and their families must always come first." Ofsted highlighted a requirement to urgently review all cases currently or recently allocated to managers within its 0 to 25 disability service. The report says "too many

vulnerable children with disabilities have been left without adequate help or protection. As a result, children have been left in situations of unmet need and unassessed risk". Peter Murphy, director of Children, Adults and Health at the council said: "Naturally we are deeply disappointed with the outcome but we are determined to improve services for children and young people. What I can assure you of is that we are already taking steps to bring about rapid improvement, which is acknowledged by Ofsted in the report. We have set up an improvement board specifically looking at our 0 to 25 disability service to ensure the needs of our most vulnerable children and young people are being met. This remains a top priority for the council and a robust improvement plan is being developed to address all the recommendations in the report. "We are reviewing how we identify children who may be at risk of sexual exploitation and strengthening the child protection arrangements we have in place within the council and together with partner organisations. "And we are also looking at how care plans for looked after children should adapt to better meet a child’s changing needs or circumstances. "We are also reviewing social work practice across the service and reviewing the training needs of support staff, social workers and managers to ensure they are fully equipped with the right skills to help children to the best of their ability.

In a statement to the full council meeting, she outlined cases where families had waited years for diagnoses, Education, Health and Care Plans , social workers and other services, and had suffered extreme personal stress as a result. “It is your job to ensure that services are good. It is your responsibility to know what is happening and if you don’t have enough information you should ask,” Mrs Davis told councillors. The report did highlight a number of strengths. It said: ● Social workers know children well. Children’s views are heard and those who are in need receive appropriate support ● Adoption performance is rated as good. Children who cannot live with their birth families are routinely considered for adoption and are found caring homes quickly ● Children whose needs are clear are referred to the access and response team and social workers and managers swiftly refer them to the right service ● Staff feel well supported and cared for by visible and approachable managers.

"As well as adoption performance being rated good, Ofsted recognises that the work of the turnaround board, set up in 2014, has driven a number of positive and much-needed changes in children’s services. However we accept these have not been quick enough for some families." Councillor Hunt added: “I am very clear that our aspiration is to see services for children and young people move to a good rating at the earliest opportunity. “To bring about the necessary improvements, the council must act swiftly and decisively but I have every confidence that we have the right people in place to drive the changes forward.” Labour’s Councillor Gareth Manson criticised the immediate response to the report from senior officers and councillors. “This defensive attitude and culture really needs to change if there is to be any meaningful and sustainable turn around in the council’s performance,” he said. Foster mum Sandie Davis, from from Emersons Green, described the Ofsted report as dire and called on the council to do better.

Facing personal challenges in memory of James, 18 JUST over a year ago Downend teenager James Hedge tragically lost his life to diabetic ketoacidosis, a complication of diabetes caused by lack of insulin in the body. The 18-year-old, who was in his first year at university, had lived with Type 1 diabetes from the age of three. Now, in James’s memory, members of St Augustine’s Catholic Church in Downend are rallying round to raise money for research into the disorder, which claims thousands of lives every year. There are currently 400,000 people in the UK with Type 1 diabetes and more than 29,000 of them are children. The St Augustine’s community are dedicating 2017 to raising money for the charity

JDRF which works to cure, treat and prevent Type 1 diabetes. To kick-start fundraising, Downend's 45-year-old Liz Knight, a close friend of the Hedge family, is running the London Marathon on April 23. Liz only started running in 2015 and this will be her first marathon. Then on Saturday June 24 a fundraising family walk from Frenchay to Eastville Park and back will take place. Finally, in August, four cyclists will use pedal power to trek more than 100 miles in one day. Matthew Condon, 44, from Mangotsfield, Andrew Serle, 42, from Bromley Heath, Jonathan Davis, 45, and 14-year-old Josie Davis, both from Longwell Green, will head to Somerset for

the cycle ride. James’s parents, Maeve and Bob, said: “We are so touched to have the support of the St Augustine community, with friends taking on immense personal challenges in memory of James. "James was kind, gentle, patient, quietly strong and determined and a good and loving son, brother and friend. His life was tragically cut short as he started his first year at university. We hope his legacy will be helping to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes so other families don’t have to suffer as we have." There will be further fundraising events throughout the year including a ladies pamper night on March 24 at St Augustine’s School, a quiz night on April 2 in the parish hall,

James lost his life in January 2016 after living with Type 1 diabetes since he was three years old cake sales in the parish hall on Sundays after church and a car wash in the parish car park, also after church. n NEWS SPORTY siblings from Emersons Green are celebrating success after bringing home a cache of trophies and medals. Leanne Baker, 13, has won numerous medals for synchronised swimming at a national level despite only taking up the sport four years ago. Meanwhile brother Matthew, 15, has honed his karting skills over the past decade to win first place in his final season. Dad Mike said both children, who attend Winterbourne International Academy, have been keen on sport from a young age. He said: “Their mum is a swimming instructor so sport is in the family. “We first noticed that Matthew was good at driving when he was five. He went on a ride at Legoland where you drive a car around a course. All the other children were crashing but he just sailed right through. “So when he was about seven I started taking him karting in Gloucester and he loved that.” Matthew has now reached the top of the age bracket for junior karting, but has finished in first place in his final competition season. He scored a near-record 137 race points, beating around 40 young drivers from across the South West over 10 rounds in the Castle Combe junior karting championship. Despite only six drivers being selected from heats for each final, Matthew made it through to all 10 finals, and was on the podium eight times during the season including three first places and first place overall for the season. He now plans to go on to study motorsport engineering at college, which could lead into careers working with or

Brother and sister are sporting champions designing F1 cars. Sister Leanne first saw synchronised swimming at the London 2012 Olympics, when she went with mum Liz, twin brother Andrew, and Matthew. She was immediately hooked and joined a Bristol club weeks later to start learning the discipline. Mike said: “She was actually quite old to start it. Most people start when they’re eight, and she was 10 when she got into it. “But she’s worked really hard and it’s paid off. She trains five times a week after school, mainly in Hengrove. “The best thing about it is the friends she’s made doing it. They have lots of fun together and she really enjoys being part of a team.” She has just represented City of Bristol Synchro Club at the national team event for her age, where she brought home a silver medal. Other recent medals came from the South of England regional championships, and the Scottish Open national championships. Mike said: “There aren’t that many clubs for synchronised swimming, but we are lucky to have one of the best ones here in Bristol.” Matthew is holding the Castle Combe karting junior championship cup Leanne has three silver synchronised swimming team medals for the 12-14 age group

n NEWS EVERYBODY has an opinion about development in their local area. South Gloucestershire Council faces increasing pressure to provide enough housing to meet demand, so more development is inevitable. Pucklechurch Parish Council has decided that the best way to influence the scale and nature of this development within the parish is to develop a neighbourhood plan. The government gave communities the right to have a say in local development through the Localism Act 2011. A neighbourhood plan is a document that sets out planning policies – policies that are developed by local people rather than the local planning authority. Once the plan is drafted, the whole community decides via a referendum vote whether the local authority should bring the plan into force. Thus the legislation gives real legal weight to the policies developed by people who live and work in the community. For the Pucklechurch Parish Neighbourhood Plan, a call

March, 2017

Why Pucklechurch Parish Council has decided to have a neighbourhood plan

for volunteers was made last June and a group was formed in October to take the project forward. This group will act as an advisory committee to the Pucklechurch Parish Council. The volunteers who stepped forward bring a good range of skills to the table and represent all three major areas in the

parish – Pucklechurch, Parkfield, and Shortwood. The committee chose Rick Dunning as chair and Lesley Putt as secretary. You may contact the committee via email at ppnp@pucklechurch.org if you have questions or comments. Neighbourhood Plan Area Approved The Pucklechurch Parish Neighbourhood Plan Committee has already cleared the first hurdle in this two-year project. South Gloucestershire Council approved the application to designate the Pucklechurch Parish as a neighbourhood plan area. This approval means that South Gloucestershire now has a duty to assist in developing the plan. The next step will be to

determine the scope of the plan, and for that the committee will need input from the residents of Pucklechurch Parish. Look out for events and activities that will allow you to have input into the future of your community. Neighbourhood Plan Website A website has been set up for the Pucklechurch Parish Neighbourhood Plan. This should be your go-to place for information and updates on the plan’s progress. All aboard fun bus Masters degree hat trick for Helen

A FREE soft play party bus is coming to Lyde Green for young residents to use. The fun bus will be outside the Taylor Wimpey showhomes on Monday March 20 from 11am-1pm. It is suitable for children aged two to eight. Parents, as well as residents without children, will be able to visit the tea tent alongside the bus for free cuppas and cake. The event is being arranged by community officer Marie Burke, who is employed by Knightstone but is working to help build community groups and events for all. She said: “I’d love as many Lyde Green residents as possible to come along, whether or not they have children.I’d like to hear what ideas people have for future events and groups in Lyde

Green.“One thing we’ve heard from some residents we’ve spoken to is that they feel isolated because it’s a new community and they haven’t got to know people yet, especially if they’re a stay at home parent. Hopefully this event will bring people together and help people to get to know neighbours who are also at home during the week.” One idea Marie is already exploring is having a community gardening group. A trained horticulturalist and former park keeper, she hopes to share her knowledge with Lyde Green residents. She said: ““If enough people are interested, we could look at gardening in shared spaces or having a ‘Lyde Green in Bloom’ event.” Call Marie on 01943 526385 or email marie.burke@ knightstone.co.uk

EMERSONS Green resident Helen Rana is celebrating gaining a hat-trick of Master’s degrees. The mother of two has been awarded a Master of Science (MSc) degree with Merit from Bristol University, to add to her Master of Arts (MA) degree from Westminster University and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree from Cambridge University. Her MSc was in Strategy, Change and Leadership, and her thesis examined how storytelling can be used to create and sustain a business. Her earlier MA was in Film & Television Studies, focusing on screenwriting, and her History MPhil analysed Kenneth Kaunda’s 27-year term as president of Zambia. Helen, who is a senior research and business development manager at the University of the West of England, said: “I am always keen to learn new things, meet new people and work in stimulating and challenging environments. Whenever I see something that makes me curious, I tend to look into it further and see if I can get involved.”

Residents launch online petition in bid to speed up viaduct repairs HUNDREDS of residents, including many from Emersons Green, have joined a campaign for funding to speed up repair works on the ring road. The essential maintenance to the Bromley Heath viaduct over the river Frome, which is due to start in June, will reduce traffic on the busy A4174 from four lanes to two and is expected to cause long delays and have severe impact on people living in surrounding areas. The £5.9 million programme is set to take a year to complete but could be finished in less than half that time if another £3.7 million were found to pay for extended working hours. Resident Adam Jaufurally has launched an online petition urging Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti and the House

of Commons to put pressure on the Department for Transport to find the additional money to accelerate the works. The petition points out: “Closing the road for such a long period of time will be detrimental to the local economy, increase pollution (due to increased congestion) and cause up to three-mile tailbacks along the A4174, M32 and M4 – all key strategic roads. “The works will improve the viaduct for road, cycle and pedestrian users and the sooner it is completed the sooner it can be a positive contribution to the local economy as well as improve the lives of local residents.” South Gloucestershire Council has pledged to get the work done as quickly as it can and to work with residents to

tackle any problems that arise. Information can be found at www.southglos.gov.uk/bhviaduct As Voice went to print, 903 people had signed the petition. Other residents have lobbied Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore and Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall. Mr Lopresti told Voice: “I have been working for some time on the campaign to secure extra money to enable the works on Bromley Heath viaduct to be reduced from the currently planned 52 weeks. “I have had a number of meetings with the Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP, the Secretary of State for Transport, to request more support from the Department for Transport. I have also written formally to the Department to put pressure

on them to do everything they can to help. In his reply, Andrew Jones MP, the Minister with responsibility for roads, highlighted the fact that the Government have provided £13.95 million of the £15.5 million total cost of the scheme. “In addition, I have met councillors, including Councillor Colin Hunt, to encourage them to explore ways of finding funds to help reduce the length of time the works are taking. "Of course I agree with the residents who have contacted me to express their concerns about the delays that will inevitably result from the works to the viaduct, and I am also working closely with Councillor Tim Bowles, the Conservative candidate for Metro Mayor, to find a solution to this problem.”

Mum paralysed in riding accident is going for gold Sallyanne Haigh, 43, a community nurse manager at Frome Valley Medical Centre, was paralysed in a riding accident in 2015. Now Sallyanne, who has two children, Harry, 15, and Stella, 13, explains how she has set her sights on the Paralympics MY life changed forever on October 10, 2015. I was riding my horse at a Severn Vale Riding Club event at Hollister’s in Chipping Sodbury when the unthinkable happened. We approached a cross country fence and didn’t get it quite right, resulting in the horse I was riding rearing up and going over backwards on top of me and crushing me. Thank goodness for the Great Western Air Ambulance team, who after the initial assessment airlifted me to Southmead Hospital. I underwent a ninehour emergency operation to fix my broken vertebrae but I had been left with irreparable spinal cord damage. I spent the next three months in Southmead and a further three months in the Salisbury spinal unit. I was paralysed from the waist down and had to learn to live life in a wheelchair. These injuries are complicated and let’s just say after being a nurse for 22 years I did not make a good patient. I have been home 10 months

Sallyanne in her wheelchair

now and through the support from family and special friends, plus grit and determination I am living independently back at home with my children. This is an amazing achievement. As soon as I was able to think clearly after my accident I decided I wanted to ride again. This isn’t as easy as it sounds when you can’t sit up. I am working towards getting back on top and riding for the British para dressage team. With the help from my personal trainer Seona Bleakman from Frampton Fitness, we are strengthening my core and balance. I have sponsorship from Pearce Brothers Mobility in Yate. James and the team have been amazing in providing me with essential equipment to assist with everyday living, and without their support and equipment life would be much more difficult for me, even impossible. Pearce Brothers are helping to fund the hoist to be fitted on to the back of the horse lorry which will get me back up on top and able to attend competitions. My trainer Beth Hobbs from Loan Oak Stables has sponsored a horse for me to ride and compete on (which is the best bit so far). We have been offered a monthly blog by Your Horse magazine, as they want to follow my journey. I have also started a blog about my antics and this can be followed at myparajourney. blogspot.co.uk. I have attended two para training days on the ground, and am going to Hartpury Equine Therapy Centre on a ‘fit to ride’ British para training day. This is really exciting and such an opportunity for me. I am looking for local sponsors to support me through the provision of products, services or finances to assist in achieving my goal of one day riding at the Paralympics. n NEWS FAMILY and friends of a young doctor who died from skin cancer have paid tribute to him. Mark Sims died on January 19 at the age of 28 following a two-year battle with malignant melanoma. In that time he raised well over £100,000 for Cancer Research UK by galvanising more than 3,000 friends and strangers to contribute. During his illness he kept a brutally honest blog, wrestlingmelanoma.com, sharing the realities of dealing with cancer treatment. It led to other doctors commenting it had changed the way they dealt with cancer patients. Parents Chris and Sue, who live in Longwell Green, said they were proud of what their son had achieved in his tragically short life. Chris said: “The fundraising was typical of his attitude. He would always try and find a positive out of a negative situation. “He wanted to do everything he could to raise awareness and to do something for good for

Tributes paid to doctor, 28, who raised £100k for charity other people. He has passed on his body for medical research so that further study can be done into melanoma. “He was a healthy boy who had a full life with so much promise for the future. Continuing with the fundraising helps give us a focus, but it is tinged with sadness. He would have gone on to have a career as a brilliant doctor, and he planned to train as an oncologist if he’d recovered.” Mark grew up in Longwell Green with twin brother Dave, an A&E doctor, and older brothers Matthew, 32, and Paul, 30. He attended Cadbury Heath and John Cabot schools, and played on a range of local sports teams including Stanbridge Rangers football, Barton Hill rugby and Kingswood squash

team. Before starting his medical degree and qualifying as a doctor, Mark and Dave spent six months working as healthcare assistants at Frenchay Hospital. Mark fought off skin cancer age 15, caused by a genetic defect, and had been healthy for 11 years afterwards until a sudden stomach pain one morning led to the discovery of tumours in his liver, lung and spleen. Sue said: “He set up his JustGiving page within five days of being admitted hospital in 2015 when he discovered the malignant melanoma had come back. It helped him to be doing something, and to make sense of it all. “Once the fundraising started it took on a life of its own. It

got to £50k quickly, then slowed down. When Mark was told he only had a few weeks left, he told everyone his goal was to get to over £100k before he died. The fund passed that in less than 24 hours.” Sue is now looking to publish a book of Mark’s blog later this year through her publishing company, Poetry Space, to raise further funds for Cancer Research UK. Mark’s family and fiancée, Georgie Latcham, held a private service for Mark. This was followed by a memorial service open to the public on Saturday February 18 at Leicester University, where Mark studied. Bakers Coaches in Bristol donated a coach to take people from Bristol to and from the memorial.

Sam proves he's the cat's whiskers

MORE than 100 children from Emersons Green Primary School were captivated by a storytelling session from author Sam Gayton. It took place at Emersons Green Library, which had been transformed into a scene from his last book, His Royal Whiskers. Sam entertained the pupils with extracts from the tale before signing copies of the book for the children. He said: “It’s a pleasure and a privilege to be here. Growing up, my own library was a constant source of fuel for my imagination.” Children from Emersons Green Primary said: “It was cool! He was very funny. He explained how to write stories and how he got his ideas.” Their teacher, Miss Hazard, said: “Sam was absolutely amazing and the children were wildly engaged throughout. A real modern, funny story teller!” Sam also visited Yate Library for a sessions with children from St Paul’s Catholic Primary School, Wellesley Primary School and Tyndale Primary School for more magical stories.

AN EMERSONS Green mum has grown an international textiles business from her kitchen table. Liz Freke, 35, from Bissex Mead, started sewing personalised bunting for children soon after her youngest child was born. What started out with friends asking her to make bunting for their own children, soon snowballed into requests from across Bristol. Liz set up Hattie’s Hoorays – named after daughter Harriet – 18 months ago and is now fulfilling orders from across the UK and beyond. She said: “I’ve always been creative, and trained as an illustrator. But I ended up working in office jobs and as a team leader for an insurance broker. “I still felt the need to do something creative so after I had children I started making bunting. I wasn’t expecting there to be so much demand for it. A lot of children now have unusual names or spellings, so their parents can’t find their names on things from shops and want to order personalised items.” Now Liz is so busy she deals with up to 15 orders each week via her Facebook page, and in August gave up her office job at Emersons village hall to run the business full time. Once children Harriet, four, and Billy, two, are in bed, the kitchen table is cleared and the sewing machine comes out ready for Liz to start work. She said: “There are a lot of late nights and early mornings to

fit it in, but I really enjoy doing it. “The run up to Christmas was the busiest I’ve ever been. My husband, Richard, looked after the children while I worked to get everything done.” “It’s great when a parent gets in touch to say their child really loves something I’ve made for them. I like the idea that my work will be something they’ll treasure.” The offering from Hattie’s Hoorays has now expanded to personalised tepees, cushions, tote bags, party bags and keepsake bears made from children’s baby clothes. Liz, who has lived in Emersons Green for 10 years, sources materials locally, including from Fabrics Plus in Downend. Later this year she hopes to start local workshops to teach beginners’ sewing, and also wants to set up a workroom to cope with the ever-growing pile of fabric taking over her kitchen. She said: “I think people are really into craft and making things at the moment. It’s helped by things like the Great British Bake Off and Great British Sewing Bee. “When I was growing up I was into knitting and sewing. I started my own business selling knitted dolls when I was 12, so I’ve always been a bit of an entrepreneur. “But it wasn’t fashionable then. Now, when I tell people what I do, people are really interested and want to know more.”

Metro Mayor battle begins PEOPLE in South Gloucestershire will go to the polls in May to elect a ‘Metro Mayor’. The election will take place on May 4 and the candidates will include Tim Bowles, a South Gloucestershire councillor, for the Conservatives and former Bristol West MP Stephen Williams for the Liberal Democrats. Darren Hall is the Green candidate. Lesley Mansell will contest the post for Labour and Aaron Foot for UKIP.

Work begins to save Blackhorse pond WORK has begun to try and restore Blackhorse Pond before it disappears completely. The 130-year-old pond in the open space opposite Blackhorse Primary School has dried up over the years, leaving little water left for wildlife to live in. Now a campaign by residents has successfully resulted in South Gloucestershire Council starting pond management work. The current work is focusing on felling or pruning the willow trees in and around the pond. The trees could be one of the reasons the pond has dried up. The council is also widening the footpaths around the pond, which have narrowed over the years, back to their original width. Later in the year, the council plans to desilt the pond if funding is secured. The campaign to save the pond is being organised by Liz Foster-Hall, whose daughter attends Blackhorse primary school. She said: “I’m really pleased that work has started. It made me so sad to see the state the pond had got into and I’m sure I wasn’t the only person to complain to the council. “Last year the ducklings were dying because they only had a patch of mud to sit on, where they were an easy target for other wildlife. “All the other ducks left, so families couldn’t bring their children to feed the ducks any more. “I would like to see the pond restored so this can be a green space that everyone in the community can use.” Now she is working with Blackhorse Primary School to try to organise a meeting for local

Blackhorse pond - reeds need clearing people who’d like to get involved in maintaining the pond. She said: “We can get little ones out litter picking, and adults can be involved in work with the pond.” Once a date is set, details of the meeting will be published on the Facebook group “Protect Our Pond – Blackhorse Open Space.” A spokesman for South Gloucestershire Council said: “Over the years the pond has dried up, leaving little water in the pond for wildlife. “There are likely to be a number of reasons why this pond, which is over 130 years old, no longer gets the same amount of water it once did. “One reason could be because of the amount of vegetation growing in the pond.”

n CRAFT COLUMN With Mothers’ Day just around the corner, why not make Mum a beautiful notebook cover? This make, ideal for beginners to sewing, will make a lovely personalised gift for Mum. Enjoy! You will need: A5 notebook A piece of your chosen fabric (fabric size should be at least 37cms x 18cms) Thread to match/contrast to your material Fabric scissors Fabric glue Ruler Pencil Iron Sewing needle Embellishments (optional) 1. The measurements we have used here cover a standard A5 notebook (when both covers are flattened, the measurements are approximately 20.5cms x 15cms). If your notebook size differs slightly, alter the length and width of the rectangle in the following

step accordingly – as a guide, the rectangle should be 14cms wider than the width of the flattened book and 3cms longer than the length of the book. 2. On the reverse of your material, measure out and cut a rectangle which is 37cms x 18cms 3. With the reverse of the fabric facing you, turn over 1cm of fabric from one of the edges and iron in place. Repeat on all 4 sides of the rectangle – these will be your hem and will make your cover look nice and neat! 4. Now sew a ‘turned under’ hem all around the rectangle, using the ironed lines as a guide. To sew a turned under hem, take one of the raw edges and tuck it underneath itself to your ironed crease, as you sew the hem in place. You could

hand sew this stage too if you would prefer

with Liz Knowles

5. Tie off the ends of your cotton, either by sewing the threads into the seam to neaten or simply by tying the bundle of threads into a neat knot and cutting. 6. With the reverse of the fabric still facing you, take one of the sides of the rectangle and fold it over by 5.5cms. Glue a very thin line of fabric glue onto the top and bottom edges and clamp in place – this has created a pocket at one end of the rectangle. Leave to dry. 7. Next, take your notebook and slip the front cover into the pocket you have created. With the notebook still in place and with the front and back covers flattened, fold 5.5cms of fabric over at the opposite side of

the rectangle, to enclose the other cover. 8. Again, pop a thin layer of fabric glue at the top and bottom edges on the pocket you have created and clamp in place. You now have your covered notebook! You can choose to decorate the front if you’d like – we made simple letter stencils from card and transferred and cut these out from felt to spell ‘Mum’. Be as creative as you like or even just leave the cover as it is! Either way Mum is sure to love her beautiful handmade gift!

Potholes funding approved NEARLY 7,000 potholes in South Gloucestershire will be filled in over the next 12 months. The Government has allocated £362,000 for local roads from its Pothole Action Fund. Money is also coming our way from the new National Productivity Investment Fund to improve roads in the district aimed at cutting congestion and improving journey times. Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore welcomed the funding, which he said would benefit local families and businesses. ‘The state of our roads is consistently being raised with me on the doorstep by local residents, so I know how popular this government funding will be,” he said.

Village gets lifesaving device RESIDENTS have raised £3,000 to install a defibrillator in Mangotsfield village. The initiative was organised by members of the Charnfield Neighbourhood Watch who decided the device was needed after hearing a talk about how a speedy response to cardiac arrest was vital. Members secured grants from local organisations including Mangotsfield Festival, Emersons Green Town Council and the Lions Club

as well as raising funds themselves. “We have had a superb response,” said chairman Sue Jefferies. “Mangotsfield School held a nonuniform day for us and raised a fantastic £600. It has taken us a while but we have achieved it - the defibrillator is permanently in place at the Salutation. Now we are going to undertake training to make sure we are not frightened to use it if the need should ever arise.”

MP Chris is guest speaker at Rotary Club

Charity receives boost after shirt auction A CHARITY which helps underprivileged children has been given a boost thanks to a signed Bristol Rovers shirt. The blue and white top, from 2007, was raffled at the Kingswood branch of Swinton Insurance in aid of Variety. Manager and Emersons Green resident Andy Hunt has been supporting a campaign to buy a mini-bus to take disabled and underprivileged children on day trips. Many of the charity's fundraisers live in Downend, including Variety Ambassador Dave Hook and his wife Tracy. Andy said: "The amount raised was only £156 but every little helps. The winner was a Swinton customer, Mrs Hudson from Redfield, who gave the shirt to her son as a present. He was over the moon with it."

MP Chris Skidmore will be the guest speaker at a supper event hosted by Kingswood Rotary Club. The Kingswood MP and Minister for the Constitution will talk about balancing Parliament with family life as well as revealing the latest government news. It takes place at the BAWA Club, Southmead Road, Filton on Friday March 3 at 7pm for a 7.30pm two course meal with tea or coffee. Tickets cost £18.50 and dress is lounge suit. For more information and booking please contact Paul Strover on 0117 967 3224 or paul.strover11@yahoo. com

n PETER'S VISION

I

AM often asked if we see NHS patients, well the answer is yes, most definitely. In our family practices we have always seen NHS patients. I firmly believe in the NHS, and have been a part time NHS employee at the Bristol Eye Hospital for over 10 years. The quantification comes when I go on to explain that the NHS sight test was first envisaged in the 1940’s. In some ways I think the view of the NHS sight test has not progressed much at all since then. In essence when asked to perform an NHS sight test the statute book requires a checking of the need for an optical appliance (glasses to you and I), check the health of the patients eyes and refer if indicated. There is no mention of detecting, diagnosing and managing conditions such as dry eye, risks of glaucoma and risks of macula degeneration. Neither is there

The team at Turners

mention of thoroughly assessing and treating those with reading difficulties among other things, all of which are all seen day to day in our Turners Opticians Eye Clinics. So, perhaps the question to ask could be “as well as the basic NHS sight test, can you at Turners Opticians better look after our eye health and vision?” The answer,

most definitely yes. Our core ethos over three generations has been to care for each of you as an individual in the most thorough way we can. As a further question - how do you manage this with the limited available NHS funds? May I present you the Turners Opticians Extended Eye Exam, which is available to both NHS and private patients. You may rightly be asking why an Extended Eye Exam is not standard on just about every high street? To be honest I am not sure I know the answer. For our practices it is simply my passion and desire to provide the best for each of you that led me to launch our extended eye exam. It is no secret that I am a huge advocate of ‘if a job needs doing, then do it well’! Our extended eye exam is more thorough and in-depth than a standard (NHS) sight test. This longer appointment allows extra time for your Optometrist to listen to any eye or vision concerns you may have, as well as thoroughly check the health

The team at Turners of your eyes, and provide you with a personal recommendation for your eye health and vision. Whilst answering questions, another is what about children’s eye and vision health? Well as you may expect from parents of young children, at Turners Opticians we provide thorough eye care for children under the NHS. We also give your child two free pairs of glasses when they are entitled to an NHS optical voucher. To book an extended eye exam or NHS sight test for yourself and your children, or for advice about glasses or contact lenses; please visit our website, telephone our Fishponds or Henleaze practices or even pop in to say Hi! We look forward to seeing you soon!

n VET’S ADVICE

Bad breath - is your pet affected?

D

ID you know that dental problems are probably the most common issue our pets suffer from? And yet they are also one of the most underdiagnosed, mainly because it’s difficult to look properly in their mouths and also bad breath is often considered “normal”! Poor dental health is painful, causes tooth decay, and infections can spread throughout the body, potentially causing significant organ damage. So, it’s very important for us to regularly check your pet’s mouth and recommend a care regime at home to ensure

their teeth and gums stay in good condition. A healthy mouth usually has bright white teeth with pink (or pigmented) gums. However, over time, accumulation of plaque bacteria on the surface of the teeth leads to inflammation of the gums called gingivitis. At this stage you might notice reddened gums, bad breath and some accumulation of plaque on the tooth surface. If the condition is allowed to continue untreated, bacteria will penetrate below the gum line, destroying the tooth supporting structures leading to a condition

(neck lesions) (see picture). In this condition the tooth is progressively destroy, leading to exposure of the nerve which is very painful. What can be done? The good news is that if gum problems are identified at an early stage, a combination of scale and polish and ongoing home care can make a real difference to your our pets oral health. Please contact the practice today for a free dental check with one of our nurses!

called periodontitis which will lead to tooth loosening and eventual tooth loss. Cats may also be affected by gingivitis, but as well as this they may also suffer from a condition called tooth resorptive lesions

Kate Tarr

The very first meeting of Pucklechurch WI was held in the Miner’s Institute on January 20th 1937 at 7.00 with thirty three people present. A formation meeting was then held on 2nd February when a Mrs. E.E. Pratt chaired the meeting. At the meeting it was decided that ‘all refreshments be paid for out of institute funds and that 1 per cup and 1 per cake be charged’ At the next meeting on 17th February it was decided that there should be a notice board ‘to be hung on the wall near Mr Hitchings shop and to have programmes similar to Yate ones’. By March they had seventy two members and they opened the meeting with the singing of Jerusalem. At a later meeting however they asked a Miss Lewis to conduct them in the singing of Jerusalem. At this meeting Mrs Pratt spoke about the district nurse and ‘ a very appreciated talk and demonstration on thrift rugs was given’. The social club subcommittee was set up to arrange games and singing meetings finished with the national anthem. We continue to sing Jersualem at certain events and enjoy a wide range of speakers and activities. On January 18th this year we held our 80th birthday party in the school hall. Our usual venue is the Homefield Centre but on this occasion we needed a bigger venue. At our party Pauline Alway the present President read a few lines from the minutes of the first meeting before we dealt with the business part of the evening. We then had a kurling competition playing in teams of four and this was organised by WI members from Stockwood. Kurling can be played by all ages and all abilities. Some

teams were very competitive while others just enjoyed the games and there was much laughter. Medals were presented to the winning team. We all enjoyed a wonderful buffet and a piece of birthday cake. Elaine Stone

A polar adventure

We felt excited and privileged to welcome polar explorer Victoria Riches to our February meeting. It somehow seemed appropriate that we had braved freezing temperatures on our way to listen to her! Victoria certainly didn’t disappoint us. She is a fascinating speaker and as usual we soaked up all sorts of interesting facts as we listened, enthralled by her story. Victoria never set out to be an explorer. One day, whilst reading the newspaper on her tube journey to work, she spotted an advertisement for women to join an expedition to the North Pole and decided to apply. Somewhere in the course of a phone-call to her parents to tell them of her plan, Victoria’s mother decided to gate-crash! After a long and gruelling recruitment process that saw Victoria and her mum (Sue), along with an ever-decreasing number of hopefuls, wading through rivers in winter fully clothed and carrying telegraph poles across Dartmoor in the pouring rain, they were both

accepted for the polar challenge. Most of us had images of them skiing along, pulling their sledges of supplies smoothly behind them, but Victoria explained that the ice is far from smooth, it is very rough with hillocks and huge ridges. It was amazingly hard work and never dull. We were surprised to learn that the ice in the Arctic is constantly moving like a gigantic frozen lilo, so that you could pitch your tent facing south one evening, and wake in the morning with it facing north. On one day, although they had physically walked 30 miles north, the ice they were on had been drifting south and so they had not actually moved nearer to the North Pole at all! Imagine that! In spite of setbacks and, at one point, disaster when a team member fell into freezing water as the ice separated, the mission was successful and Victoria and her mum were part of the first women’s expedition to reach the North Pole. If you would like to know more about Victoria and Sue’s exploits in the Arctic, you could read their book Frigid Women. The title sounds a bit racy but was, Victoria told us, inspired by her father (a vicar!) who suggested the book would sell better if it had a “racy” title! For a more detailed account of Victoria’s talk (including who fell into the icy water) or any other activities at Bromley Heath WI please see our website: www. bromleyheathwi.org.uk/ Keep smiling – Spring is on the way! Festival benefits from grant

Patrick scoops four awards A FINANCIAL adviser from Emersons Green has scooped four industry honours. Patrick Connolly took the glory at the Unbiased awards ceremony, which recognises professional advisers and journalists who promote the value of independent advice. Patrick, who works at Chase de Vere in Bath, was named Financial Adviser of the Year, Investment Adviser of the Year, At Retirement Adviser of the Year and Value of Advice Ambassador. All categories were judged by a panel of industry experts and product providers, led by Karen Barrett, chief executive of Unbiased. Patrick said he was proud to receive the titles. He said:“These awards are a reflection of the time and effort we put in to working with financial journalists to ensure their readers have accurate and

n ON THE BEAT with PC JAMES ROCHFORD

Quizzers raise £30,000

Let’s help young people stay safe and show respect WE’RE starting to see problems with anti-social behaviour (ASB) involving teenagers in Downend and Mangotsfield. So far this year we’ve had around half a dozen reports of problems including teenagers knocking on doors and running away, pulling up plants from gardens and throwing food at passing cars. Thankfully no damage was caused to the vehicles, but of course throwing anything at into the road could cause an accident. Other incidents of nuisance include young people congregating outside local shops. We’re targeting patrols in the areas affected and will be calling out parents or carers to collect young people, or taking them home, if they’re found somewhere we’ve had a report of ASB. We hope our increased presence will help to nip these issues in the bud, but if problems continue, we’ll work with

the community, local schools and the council to take further action. It’s really important for parents and carers to know where their children are, who they’re with and what they’re up to. Knowing where they are and who they’re with is part of keeping them safe – and checking what they’re up to helps them to learn what is and what is not acceptable behaviour. We all want our children to be able to meet up with their friends, but they need to know how to stay safe and show respect for their community. Remember most groups of teenagers are just ‘hanging out’ and don’t mean to be intimidating to other people. They often don’t realise the impact a noisy group can have. However, no one should be left feeling harassed, alarmed or distressed by anti-social behaviour. If you’re affected, it’s important to get in touch with us or South

Gloucestershire Council. Visit our website, www.avonandsomerset. police.uk, or www.southglos.gov.uk

QUIZZERS across Bristol and South Gloucestershire have used their general knowledge to raise £30,000 for their local air ambulance charity. They know what the capital of Russia is, the date that John F Kennedy was assassinated, and what is the only man made object that is visible from space. But more importantly they also know that by taking part in a quiz run by Finish First they are raising money for Great Western Air Ambulance Charity. Ann and Andrew Newbury, from Downend, run Finish First Quizzes, and hold events in venues in aid of GWAAC. The couple write their own quizzes, with rounds including general knowledge, geography and music. They held their first quiz in the summer of 2012. Last year GWAAC crews attended 1,735 jobs, and of those 39.7 per cent were in Bristol and 11.5 per cent were in South Gloucestershire.

n NEWS PARALYMPICS gold medal winner Will Bayley proved inspirational when he visited Mangotsfield School to launch the new table tennis centre. Will, who was awarded the MBE in the New Year’s Honours following his success at the Rio Games, motivated students with an assembly that included a world record attempt. This was followed by a masterclass for selected players and an extremely competitive house competition. Wendy O’Donnell, leader of the CSET Sports Partnership, which is based at Mangotsfield, said students had thoroughly enjoyed a memorable visit. “Will is a true role model for our students,” she said. In the afternoon, Will and the school’s table tennis coach Dan Ives held a coaching sessions and festival for children from ten local primary schools. Adam Rider, deputy head at Emersons Green Primary School, said: “It was a brilliant experience for the kids.” A parent commented: “What an amazing event for our children, well run and a great experience to meet Will and hold the gold medal!”

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

with Tim Button, Doctor of Chiropractic at Cleve Chiropractic and Next step in Mangotsfield

Blog 38 –

Headaches ACCORDING to the NHS, 10 million people in the UK get headaches regularly. There are many types of headaches including migraines, tension headaches, cluster headaches and hormonal headaches. Before I start talking about headaches it is important to say that some can be a sign of something very serious, so if you are not sure please read the NHS website for red flags. Now many of these headaches are minor. They can be treated with rest, drinking more water and may only last half an hour or so but some headaches can be debilitating and last days. These more serious headaches affect people’s quality of life drastically and will inevitably lead patients to seek help from their doctor. There are many prescription and over the counter drugs for headaches that help patients but a large number of people want to reduce their headaches using less or no medication at all. So how can we as chiropractors help? Firstly I can give you some simple advice right now, drink more water! It’s fair to say that many of us do not drink enough fluid and I don’t mean hundreds of cups of tea a day, just plain water will do. Try going to bed an hour earlier, read if you can before sleep to calm your mind. Extra sleep has been shown to reduce stress and headaches and we are beginning to find out, unsurprisingly, that it has lots of other reviving benefits. From a chiropractic point of view there is much we can do to help without medication.

Chiropractic has been shown to be able to help both migraines and tension headaches using spinal manipulation/mobilisation in multiple studies over many years. My own experience is that in nearly all case we can reduce or practically resolve patient’s headache complaints assuming they don’t fit into the very serious category. The only problem is that people just don’t know that we can help. So here I am shouting it from the rooftops to all of you wonderful local people, if you or somebody you know suffers from headaches and want some helpful treatment please tell them that a reputable and fully qualified chiropractor can help. Your chiropractor should be able to perform a thorough examination and diagnose the type and likely cause of the headache. At Cleve Chiropractic we combine the traditional techniques with massage of the neck and shoulders (and dry needling which is westernised acupuncture, if patients don’t mind needles of course!). During this time, we will help train your muscles and skeleton to improve your posture which can have a huge effect on the tension in your neck leading to headaches. Posture is such a common problem within the clinic that we run an eight-week posture training course to help people conquer a lifetime of poor habits. The course is designed to measure your posture, then strengthen some muscles and lengthen others to regain a proper stature without having to constantly think ‘am I standing straight’? Your body should hold itself naturally and this class teaches you how to do that. If you are ever not sure about your headache or your headache is new and severe in nature then please consult your GP or call 111 or 999.

Puckle hockey needs YOU PUCKLECHURCH has officially had a hockey team since 1974 when Dyrham and Doynton changed their name to reflect that they were playing in the village. We have been a one team club for many years, struggling for players, occasionally playing for a season without a goalie. We now play at Winterbourne International Academy as it’s played on an artificial pitch now. We field a “team” in Berkeley division 1 which is a major achievement as a one team club. We are eighth in the table and fighting to stay in the division, as r we have struggled to field a full team each week this year. Relocations, pregnancies and injuries have led to a lack of players. We are a friendly bunch who even playing seven against eleven top of the table team still manage to have a laugh. It’s not all about hockey though; we regularly hold socials throughout winter and summer league and have an annual weekend to Center Parcs. So if you’re looking for a new hobby or used to enjoy playing and are thinking about getting back into it please get in touch. Whatever ability we always welcome new players.
