Double yellows and 20mph limit for main estate roads TRAFFIC curbs and a ban on parking are planned for the main route through Lyde Green to make the estate safer. South Gloucestershire Council has unveiled proposals for a 20mph speed limit on Jenner Boulevard and Willowherb Road. It will also apply to Honeysuckle Road, Acorn Drive and Newlands Lane as well as to the first 10 metres of side roads including Apple Grove, Cherry Banbks, Daisy Walk, Gentian Close, Hawthorn Way, Lilac Drive, Lupin Close, Marigold Close, Pear Tree Way, Pennycress Close, Sunflower Road, Thistle Close and Valerian Street. Residents have been consulted by the council about the plans, which are said to be “to ensure the unimpeded movement of vehicles on those roads and in so doing improve road safety for all road users”. Some people living on the estate have expressed concerns that without parked cars on the route drivers will go even faster.

Meet marvellous milkman Matt - he’s in line for a national prize UNLIKE the 1970s character Ernie, milkman Matt Hudd might not drive the fastest milk cart in the west but it seems he's nevertheless captured the hearts of his customers. So much so that their votes have secured him a coveted place in the semi-finals of Milkman of the Year 2017. Matt, from Mangotsfield, has been recognised for going above and beyond the call of duty, even reuniting lost mobile phones and handbags to their rightful owners. The 49-year-old is one of only six milkmen to reach this stage of the competition, run by his employer milk&more. A milkman for 20 years, Matt beat off stiff competition from just under 1,200 others due to his caring nature, reliability and friendly service. And any day now it will be revealed which one of the six finalists has been crowned the winner. When most people are sound asleep, the dad-of-two leaves the depot in Keynsham ready to drop off 400 deliveries, dishing out not just milk but a range of 200 everyday grocery items. Currently serving an area of around 65 miles, including Pucklechurch, Kingswood, Staple Hill, Mangotsfield, Bitton and Warmley, Matt says his favourite part of the job is meeting customers and the relationships
he’s built with them throughout his career. Matt believes milkmen play an important part in the local community and feels it is part and parcel of his daily job to go one step further than merely delivering produce. In addition to returning lost mobile phones and handbags to their owners, Matt has also helped a customer rearrange their house to meet their needs after they had been taken ill. Matt said he was honoured to receive a place in the semi-finals: “I am over the moon. Not only do I do a job I love, but it’s amazing to be recognised for it from people I consider friends. "We’re a team at milk&more, and we are all really focused on the service we provide and our role within the local community. It’s my goal to make sure that my customers have everything they need, when they need it, so to be nominated by them means the world to me.” Around 10,000 customers across England and south Wales voted in the competition, proving just how much milkmen are valued by their customers. Milk&more spokesman Chris Munn said the competition highlights the role each and every milkman and woman plays within the local community. The winner is expected to be announced on May 4.

Evelyn, 92, Get ready for two-hour jams steps out EVELYN Hillier, 92 years young from Mangotsfield, is raising money for the Bristol-based Penny Brohn cancer charity. She was due to join her daughter Debra and close family friend Pete on their last leg of the 102-mile Cotswold Way. Debra and Pete have been raising funds annually by doing long distance walks that have included the Three Peaks, Hadrian's Wall and South Downs Way. These walks have been in memory of Andy Boulton, Debra's husband, who died in 2011 with oesophageal cancer. Evelyn said Penny Brohn were very supportive during Andy's illness. “While I am still able I will do what I can in raising much-needed money so that other cancer sufferers can benefit.” www.justgiving.com/ cotswold102
WORK is continuing to try to minimise the predicted drastic impact of reducing traffic on the ring road at Bromley Heath from four lanes to two this summer. The closure of the southern viaduct over the river Frome for up to a year for essential repairs is expected to cause delays of up to two hours at peak times and affect many roads in the surrounding area. South Gloucestershire Council is finalising its traffic management plan after consulting widely and says it will outline its proposals at a series of public meetings next month. The latest information can also be found on the viaduct page of the council’s website www.southglos.gov.uk/ bhviaduct and the next planned presentation will be at the Staple Hill and Rodway Community Engagement Forum at the Salvation Army Citadel in Broad Street on May 16 at 7pm. The proposals to deal with
the effects are likely to include some road closures, to prevent ‘rat running’ on alternative routes, but will be kept flexible so changes can be made in response to traffic patterns. Construction of the site compound is under way and the council is preparing to open a 220-space park and ride car park at Lyde Green earlier than planned. The council has applied to the Department of Transport and the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership for an additional £3.7 million, which could speed up the works programme from 52 weeks to 33 and local MPs and councillors have met Transport Secretary Chris Grayling to press the case for acceleration of the project because of the impact of the traffic delays on the economy of the area. A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: “The latest information is available on the dedicated Bromley Heath Viaduct webpage www.southglos. gov.uk/bhviaduct. Combined action deters teen troublemakers
THE recent spate of antisocial behaviour in Downend, Bromley Heath and Emersons Green is reducing - thanks to the combined efforts of police, residents, retailers, schools, parents and council officers. Beat bobby PC James Rochford told Downend and Bromley Heath Parish Council that the action had eliminated “hangers on”, leaving only a hardcore of teenage troublemakers. He outlined the wide range of measures that were being taken to deal with the young people and stressed that the main aim was to prevent them causing problems in the first place. Letters to parents, sometimes followed up by visits, had proved an effective deterrent for many, he said. Four young people had been issued with Acceptable Behaviour Contracts, with a fifth imminent, and five had been arrested. Police had visited schools and given hard-hitting talks, he added, and in Emersons Green
dispersal orders had been used. “The majority of kids are good, decent kids,” he said. Avon and Somerset Chief Constable Andy Marsh, who was at the meeting to give an overview of how policing has changed greatly over the past 30 years, appealed to the community to be understanding of young people “testing the boundaries” and to continue to contribute to the combined
efforts to combat difficulties. “Strong communities don’t allow crime to flourish,” he said. The Chief Constable said that nationally the number of young people entering the criminal justice system had plummeted, partly because of lighter touch approaches and earlier interventions, but also because the internet and social media was keeping youngsters off the streets,
Asked what people should do if they saw crime being committed in their area, PC Rochford urged them to report it immediately and not to take matters into their own hands. This has been echoed on social media by the chairman of Bromley Heath Neighbourhood Watch, Bill Crocker, who asked people to ring 101 if they saw anything suspicious or heard anti-social shouting and swearing and to call 999 if they saw a crime in progress. Evidence was vital to enable the police to take action, he said, Meanwhile, in Emersons Green, a CCTV camera has been installed in between the village hall and the shops and the police are working with retailers and organisations in the area. A recent visit by the beat team to Sainsburys to meet members of the community proved successful in reassuring the public about the actions being taken. The team will be there again on Tuesday May 2 at 2.30pm.

Volunteers step forward to launch Neighbourhood Watch LYDE Green residents are one step closer to having a Neighbourhood Watch on the estate. A number of volunteers have come forward to get involved in the scheme and more are still needed. A start-up meeting was organised by Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Cate Biggs at Emersons Green Village Hall, where residents had a chance to meet police beat team manager PC Paul Fortune Neighbourhood Watch administratorTrevor Wilmot, and local councillor Rachael Hunt. They answered questions and explained some of the benefits of running the scheme. Neighbourhood Watch Scheme (NHW) has been part of Avon and Somerset police since its introduction in 1982. Its main aims are to inform people about what is going on in the area, improve communication links with police and lower the risk of crime in the community. Lyde Green Neighbourhood Watch will be structured into several areas. Ms Biggs, a Lyde Green resident whose role is funded by Knightstone Housing Association’s community officer Marie Burke, explained: “There are currently 10 areas in Lyde Green that are covered by 1-3 area aoordinators, as the areas are quite large and it means
that the coordinators have more support. “We have 18 area coordinators and we are still looking for more volunteers to join the team. The plan is to split the areas up again in the future so they are smaller and more manageable, as they become more established and more people get involved. “We also have a residential committee made up of 10 volunteers. The committee will help support the area coordinators and set up new areas as they are developed, as well as running events and other promotions in Lyde Green.” The next stage will see area coordinators introducing themselves to people living on the estate over the coming months and getting residents signed up as members. “We are also working on getting the Neighbourhood Watch signage at the moment, through either sponsorship from local businesses, fundraising, or local collections,” Ms Biggs added. “Most areas are technically set up already and we're just trying to get it running smoothly and working as it should be. We are hoping to have the scheme officially running by June/July.” You can find more information about the scheme on the Lyde Green Neighbourhood Watch Facebook page.

School children join pond restoration team PROGRESS is being made on the restoration plans for Blackhorse Pond in Emersons Green. The pond area, behind Blackhorse Primary School, has had a major spring clean thanks to local volunteers and South Gloucestershire Council and a meeting has taken place to discuss ways to improve the area. Liz Foster-Hall, organiser of the Protect Our Pond campaign said: “All paths and the steps to the pond have been cleared and widened, giving the area a fresh feel. In addition, the removal of some of the trees and saplings that were draining the water from the pond has improved water retention and spread to the flat areas, where increased plants and insects can be seen already. “John Morris from the South Gloucestershire Environment and Community and Partnerships Team has engaged with the school and local councillors to bring us all together.” The meeting at the school, hosted by headteacher Simon Botten, invited residents and pupil representatives from the School Council to share ideas. “We all felt a mutual interest in protecting and maintaining the local area around the pond and surrounding open spaces, so the
scope of the work we will be looking to do has widened from just being the pond,” said Liz. Some of the proposals at the meeting were: improving access to the pond, desilting the pond, adding stepping stones around the water, introducing bird boxes and a wildflower area. Benches, more dog waste bins and a notice board were also suggested. The event was also an opportunity to discuss ways to raise the £40,000 needed for desilting the 130-year-old pond. Liz said: “The next steps for us are to form a committee with a chair, treasurer and secretary as a minimum to enable us to access public funding to help us move forward on the plans and ideas put forward. We will also be seeking support from the local councillors to attend meetings and help make decisions as well as the primary school. “We are very excited about the progress already made and look forward to building our team of committee members, who will enable us to develop Emersons Green Open Spaces into an amazing space for everyone to enjoy.” The next step will be another meeting, to focus on forming a committee and deciding which ideas will be looked after by each group – school, residents and the council.

Hop, skip and paint RECYCLED bottles were turned into colourful flowers at an Easter Bunny Picnic in Lyde Green. The community event in the grounds of Lyde Green Primary School attracted dozens of people for an afternoon of art, games and Easter crafts within the grounds of Lyde Green Primary School. More than 40 children took pleasure in following the Easter egg trail, making Easter cards and trying their hand at circus skills. In addition, the Litterarti stand showed children how to transform the plastic bottles into flowers to take home. Organised by the Lyde Green Community Association (LGCA), the event was supported financially by Knightstone and Sovereign Housing. The team of resident volunteers and LGCA members worked closely with Marie Burke, community empowerment officer for Knightstone Housing, Sally Sibley, school-community link worker, and members of St James Parish Church Mangotsfield to make the free event possible. Sally Sibley said: “Both children and the wider community benefit greatly from having
events such as the Easter Bunny Picnic as it presents an opportunity for everyone to come together and get a true sense of what it means to be a ‘community’; learn who your neighbour is and also find out more about how they can become involved in shaping their emerging community.” As the LGCA has grown over the past two years and received more support from partner organisations, there is now a dedicated events committee that works on providing events for its residents. The new committee is led by Kelly Adams, who is also chair of LGCA.

Kelly said: “The community is what makes our events so valuable. Without the community supporting our events by coming along, we wouldn’t be able to have the success that we’ve had so far. “It was great to see around 80 residents come together as a community and feeling that sense of pride. Also seeing children happy and smiling because you’ve worked hard to organise something for them shows that it was all worth it.” LGCA hopes to provide more events for the community this year, including the annual Summer Sizzler, scheduled for July 8.

Crisis in South Glos schools as funds squeezed Education in South Gloucestershire is facing a double challenge. Secondary schools are underperforming and must make rapid improvements - while at the same time managing the huge budget pressures affecting schools at all levels. Leaders, teachers, parents and councillors are rising up to tackle the crisis, which is sure to be a big issue in the general election campaign. Linda Tanner reports MORE than 300 people turned out for a public meeting to launch the Fair Funding for all Schools - South Glos campaign and hundreds more have signed a petition calling for action. So what’s it all about? Doesn’t the Government keep telling us that it is spending more on education than ever? Yes, Kevin Courtney, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, told the meeting at the Holiday Inn in Hambrook on April 6, that’s true - but only because there are more schools and more children than before. Individually, almost all schools are facing a squeeze
on their budgets that is going to get worse, even before the introduction of the proposed new National Funding Formula in April 2018. Increased National Insurance and pension contributions, wage rises and the apprenticeship levy mean that in real terms schools are set to have about eight per cent less money, according to the National Audit Office. These constraints will force them to make tough choices: cutting jobs, reducing the curriculum and stopping trips and after-school clubs. Head teachers say they are torn between wanting parents to
be aware of the financial realities yet trying to reassure them that schools will do their very best for the children with the money they have available. A website set up by the NUT and other unions - schoolcuts. org - gives predictions for every school in England and the budget crisis each could face by 2020 based on Department for
Education figures. It is these forecasts that have provoked anger around the country, Feelings are running particularly high in South Gloucestershire, which has historically been one of the worst funded local authorities in the country. Schools in the district receive per-pupil funding that is several hundred pounds below
You can win this battle, parents are told PARENTS will this month step up their campaign for more money for South Gloucestershire schools after what they describe as a phenomenal start. The organisers of Fair Funding for all Schools - South Glos were overwhelmed when 300 people turned up for their meeting at the Holiday Inn on April 6. And they were encouraged by the message from Kevin Courtney, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, who said he believed they could win their battle. The meeting heard from a number of speakers, including Angela Athay-Hunt, who read out anonymous quotes from
school staff including one that said: “This has to be led by parents. ‘They’ won’t listen to teachers.” Mr Courtney said the power of the campaign was that it could be supported by parents across the country, no matter which political party they voted for or which way they cast their ballot in the referendum. No parent had voted for the increased class sizes, reduced opportunities for dance, drama and PE and cuts in individual support that would come about if, as expected, schools across England had £3bn less a year to spend. “If you think education’s expensive, try ignorance,” he said.

Sixth former George Angus said it was heart-breaking that children just starting out in education would get a less good deal than those who were about to leave school. Schools were reducing their curriculum offer at a time when they should be increasing it to meet 21st century needs, he said. George also voiced concerns about cuts to special educational needs funding and the impact on young people’s mental health. Speakers from the panel and the floor spoke of the workload pressures that were driving teachers out of their jobs, prompting a recruitment and retention crisis. A university student said teaching was

becoming a taboo profession, with young people reluctant to go into training because of the stress levels. Parents, governors, teachers and students voiced their concerns and vowed to take further action to highlight the crisis. Nigel Varley, from the National Union of Teachers, urged people to demand that the management of their local schools issued impact assessments on the cuts. Parent Rish Shellard, who has children at schools in Bromley Heath and Winterbourne, who started the local campaign, said protesters should “shout loud” and spread the word.

Decision delay 'is causing distress and uncertainty' THE delay over selecting a new permanent sponsor for Winterbourne International Academy came under fire from parents and councillors. Parent Debbie Porteous and Lib Dem Councillor Claire Young, who has a child due to start at the academy this year, said the hold-up was having an impact on students, families, staff and school leaders. It was causing uncertainty and distress, especially for those children due to make the critical transition from primary school in the summer, Ms Porteous told the South Glos CAH meeting. Ms Young said parents and children were concerned after being told the decision about which trust should take over from The Ridings Federation would be after the start of the 2017-18 academic year. Nigel Varley, from the National Union of Teachers, said: “The whole Ridings saga is an absolute tragedy.” Jo Thomas, deputy director of the office of the Regional Schools Commissioner (RSC), said the RSC needed to see the exam results for WIA and for the schools in the two trusts providing support, CSET and Olympus, first. “We need to see the outcomes and impact. Winterbourne presents many challenges. We don’t want to undermine the strength or capacity of those two trusts by approving a sponsor match without being assured they are able to deliver,” she said.

Ofsted chief: Urgent action needed to COUNCILLORS from all parties have agreed that all 70 members of South Gloucestershire Council share a “moral imperative’ to seek rapid improvements to secondary education in the district. Sixteen of the area’s 17 schools were below the national average for GCSE results for disadvantaged students last year - a situation described as “dire” and “unacceptable”. The issue was in the spotlight at a meeting of the council’s Children, Adults and Health Committee on April 5, attended by the regional director of Ofsted Bradley Simmons and Jo Thomas, the deputy director of the office of the Regional Schools Commissioner (RSC). Mr Simmons said South Gloucestershire’s educational underperformance was his biggest concern in the whole of the South West and he had the area under “special supervision”. He said he felt that school
leaders and council officers had finally “grasped the nettle of accountability” and understood the scale of the problem, but he was waiting to see the impact of the measures put in place before deciding if he needed to write a warning letter. Mr Simmons said that the fact that 15 of the 17 secondaries were academies, having opted out of the local authority, did not mean the council had no responsibility for them. It was part of the authority’s general duty to monitor the schools, hold them to account and intervene if necessary, he said. “It is absolutely your place to challenge schools you don’t think are doing well enough,” he said. Ms Thomas said the RSC Rebecca Clark, who has ultimate responsibility for overseeing all academies in the region, was absolutely clear that schools and multi academy trusts must work in partnership with local
authorities. She was reassured by the renewed ambition and said the 2017 outcomes would be incredibly important for South Gloucestershire. Conservative councillor Ben Stokes said members had often felt frustrated and powerless to intervene in schools. “We have a responsibility to monitor and commengt but feel very remote from direct involvement,” he said. “We do have a lot of wisdom to offer.” Liberal Democrat Councillor Ian Blair said this had been a problem even before academisation. “It has been very difficult to get them [schools] to cooperate with one another in an effective way.” he said. Will Roberts, chief executive of CSET, a multi academy trust that runs four secondaries and three primaries, and leader of the South Gloucestershire Education Partnership, which involves all
National Award winners of the Good Garage Scheme
schools, admitted that while there had been “a veneer of collaboration” in the past it had not been deep seated or focused on standards. Now, he said, with many new headteachers in place and the multi academy trusts becoming established, a cultural change was taking place. Trusts, schools and individuals were working together to drive improvements with greater pace and intensity and tackle the legacy of underperformance. Checks were being carried out with a “timescale of weeks rather than years” and leaders were holding one another to account. Labour Councillor Gareth Manson and Pat Rooney said school leaders had been saying for two years that things would start to get better and it was time to see some new initiatives and a strategy that would bring results. improve schools also came under discussion. Debbie Porteous, from the Fair Funding for all Schools - South Glos said children in school now were the victims of poor political decisions and a lack of funding. Nigel Varley, from the National Union of Teachers, called on councillors to support the parents’ campaign and put pressure on Ministers, who he said were “wobbling under mounting national pressure”. Committee chairman Jon Hunt (Conservative) said the
council had made it clear to Government that it believed South Gloucestershire schools needed additional funding and had asked Ministers for a meeting, so far to no avail. Labour’s Councillor Adam Monk said councillors should not underestimate the strength of public anger about the underfunding of schools, which was outlined in a letter to all parents by Dave Baker, the chief executive of Olympus Academy Trust.
Mangotsfield 'is on the up' MANGOTSFIELD School is an example of the underperformance of South Gloucestershire schools over time, councillors were told. Will Roberts, chief executive of CSET, which now runs the secondary, told councillors Mangotsfield had had six consecutive grade 3 inspections (the second lowest) from Ofsted over 20 years. “It is not a bad place,” he said. “But it has not performed as well as it should have done over two decades.” He said the academy was now making good progress and was confident that inspectors would see improvements when they visit.
Students are aiming high WINTERBOURNE International Academy has a strategy for improvement after being placed in special measures by Ofsted. It recently invited parents of Year 7 students into the school to watch a PE lesson in an effort to demonstrate that it was ‘business as usual’ at the academy in spite of fjnding issues and restructuring. They watched a PE lesson, where students were playing handball. A spokesman said: “The PE department’s rationale for this venture was to build relationships between the academy and the parents, while showcasing their fantastic students. These students have been learning handball since February. Their teacher, Chris Jackson has been trying to develop and encourage attributes such as resilience, self-worth and confidence. These students are now taking responsibility for their own learning, supporting one another, have high expectations and are desperate to move on in their learning. They have developed a ‘can do’ attitude and are working together to achieve the very best they can be.”

n MESSAGE FROM OUR MP
What’s happening next ... I WANT to start by thanking local residents for giving me the opportunity to represent you as your local MP over the past seven years. Putting party politics aside, I don’t think there is any greater honour as a MP than getting the chance to serve the area that you were born and grew up in, where your family has always lived. Now I’ve had the opportunity to raise my own family here - at the last election, my daughter Clemmie had just turned eight months, and now, my son Henry has only just turned one. Preparing for an election with a busy family life is certainly a very different experience compared to when I first stood in 2010! But seriously, I could not do my job as an MP without the loving support of my family, and I am especially grateful to my wife Lydia for all the support she has given me, and the sacrifices she has made.
While I will be standing again to ask local people to give me the opportunity to serve you again, I wanted to make sure that local residents were aware about what happens when Parliament is dissolved. From May 3, this current Parliament will finish, and I will officially cease to be
your MP. The next Parliament will then return after the General Election. This means that by law my constituency office will have to be closed for the General Election period and my Parliamentary email address which many constituents contact me on, will be also closed by Parliamentary authorities. I am still keen to help constituents with any issues or problems that they might want to raise with me. Please however get in touch with me via email at chris@chrisskidmore.com rather than my parliamentary email. My telephone number, 0117 9081524 will be monitored, and we will return any calls asap. It’s been a real honour serving my local area - once again, thank you, and do get in touch if I can help with anything.

Save our toddler group, begs Ruth, 81 VOLUNTEERS are needed to help run a toddler group to save it from closing after nearly 30 years of supporting parents and children. Edds and Tales toddler group runs at Christchurch hall on North Street on term time Mondays from 10-11.30am, with around 20 families attending every week. But the current team who help run it need to move on as their children are older. Founder Ruth Iles Spencer, who set up the group in Fishponds in 1990 before it moved to its current Downend home in 1997, is also taking a back seat. She said: “I’m 81 now, and I used to be up at 6am every Monday morning to bake the cakes for the toddler group. “I set up the group with my husband, Eddy, and the Edds and Tales name came from him.
He was marvellous with the children and knew them all by name and of course, because he was a man running it, it meant that more dads felt comfortable to come along.” Eddy died just as the group moved to Downend when the chapel that housed it closed down, and running the group
helped keep Ruth going during the difficult time. She said: “I just love being around children, they’re such a joy. I was lucky that my husband had three children when we married, then we had two more, so I’ve always been around children.I worked as a midwife, like the Call the Midwife days when I went around on a bicycle, and have just met the very first baby I delivered by myself – she’s 57 now!” While she’ll still come along to Edds and Tales occasionally, Ruth has other plans to keep her busy, including a trip to help orphaned children in Uganda. Debbie Westbury volunteers at the group, but needs to step down because son Bertie, three, is now at preschool. She said: “The group is so important to people. So many mothers are lonely, and even taking the step to come along to
a toddler group can be daunting. “But then they arrive, and they’re met with a cup of tea and cake and other parents who are in the same boat. And the group becomes a lifeline. “It’s particularly important to keep it going because the other playgroup that ran in the hall on Thursdays closed down last year, so we’re the only one left. “We can provide a lot of support to anyone interested in taking over running the group. It would suit someone who is retired or who works part time.” As well as drinks and cakes, the toddlers attending can enjoy music time, games and crafts, for a weekly cost of £2.50 a family. The group also welcomes donations of toys such as Duplo, cars and fancy dress outfits. Anyone able to help out can contact Edds and Tales via its Facebook page or come along on a Monday morning.

New M Shed exhibition reveals how Bristolians lived thousands of years ago Skeletons: Our Buried Bones 8 April – 3 September 2017 M Shed Six skeletons discovered in Bristol will go on display at M Shed this April alongside six skeletons from the Museum of London’s 20,000-strong collection. Collectively they bring to life stories that have long been hidden beneath the ground. The touring exhibition from the Wellcome Collection and the Museum of London will open at M Shed on 8 April 2017. Excavations in Bristol have uncovered numerous burial sites over the years, including Medieval monasteries, a hospital burial ground and a convent. The six Bristol skeletons were found in Clifton, Filton, Mangotsfield, Tormarton and the city centre. The individuals on display – from a Bronze Age man with a spear-head lodged in his spine, to a decapitated Roman woman, and children with conditions linked to poor nutrition – provide a unique and personal insight into the human history of both cities. Laura Pye, Head of Culture at Bristol City Council said:
“Each skeleton has its own tale to tell, and collectively they uncover 2,000 years of history, increasing our understanding of how people once lived, and providing insights into the health, diet, diseases and lifestyles of the deceased. It’s a totally unique insight into Bristol’s history.” Alongside the exhibition, M Shed and the University of Bristol have developed ‘The Bone Lab’, a space where children can reveal some of the science behind the stories. Children will discover how to distinguish between a male and female skeleton and how to identify what diseases and injuries the people had by searching for hidden clues and hearing from experts of the excavation site, lab and museum. Schools will have an opportunity to visit Skeletons: Our Buried Bones during a special Science Study Week, between 9-12 May. Teachers can bring their Year 5-7 classes to delve deeper into the science of bones with a new workshop, run with experts from
the University of Bristol. Activities include measuring replica human bones, comparing animal bones, handling teeth and learning about archaeological excavation. Skeletons: Our Buried Bones is a collaboration between Wellcome Collection and Museum of London, touring to Glasgow, Bristol and Leeds over 2016-2018. It is based on Skeletons: London’s Buried Bones, originally shown at Wellcome Collection in 2008.

n ON THE BEAT with PC JAMES ROCHFORD
How you can help curb doorstep crime WE often have an increase in reports of so-called ‘doorstep crime’ at this time of year. This is when unscrupulous people call door-to-door aiming to con householders into having work done, often unnecessarily or at excessive cost, sell overpriced goods or talk their way inside in order to steal. Often older people are unduly affected by this as they are more likely to be at home during the day. We work with South Gloucestershire Trading Standards Officers to raise awareness of these scams. The good news is that these crooks can be deterred, and we can all help to keep them off our streets. One way of doing this is to set up a ‘No Cold Calling Zone’, which has signage saying cold callers aren’t welcome. We know that people who live alone and feel isolated can be more
likely to fall for this sort of scam, so regularly popping round or ringing up for a chat really can make a difference. If you have elderly or vulnerable family, neighbours or friends, you can help just by saying “hello”, offering to help to get maintenance work done and reminding them of our home security tips: • Remember, it’s ok to say no! • Always use the safety chain and ask to see ID when you have an unexpected caller • Check ID by calling the organisation using a number from the phone book or your bill • Don’t be rushed – if they’re genuine they won’t mind coming back another time, when you can have someone with you • You’re legally entitled to a ‘cooling
off’ period before work starts – and failure to provide a notice of cancellation rights is a criminal offence • If you need work done, get three quotes from reputable local tradespeople – ask for recommendations from family or friends • Never give cash upfront • Keep your money in the bank, not at home It’s important to tell us straight away if you have a suspicious caller. You might be happy to send them away, but others could be more vulnerable. Give us a call on 101 with a description of them and any vehicle. If you feel intimidated or alarmed, call 999 immediately. There’s more information about rogue trading and doorstep crime

Walk for Glo brings in £14,000 A BRISTOL Rovers fan has smashed a £10,000 fundraising target in memory of his wife Gloria who died following complications during brain surgery. Mark Brimson raised an incredible £14,000 - which included on and offline donations - for Headway Bristol, a charity that helps people with brain injuries live as independently as possible. It follows a number of fundraisers, the most notable being a recent 'Walk for Glo" sponsored trek with eight friends from the home of Plymouth Argyle FC to Bristol Rovers' base at the Memorial Stadium. His sterling efforts have not gone unnoticed and now Mark
has been asked to become an ambassador for the charity. "It's a massive privilege for me," Mark said. "It means I can carry on doing things for the charity and raising money. We will probably do another event with the team that did the walk as they are all really keen." The walk took place from March 20-24 and involved the team of nine walking around eight hours a day and covering a total of 127 miles. Mark, 42, said: "The first sense was that of relief! I'm really proud of the whole team.
21
Everyone was fantastic" For Mark, pictured left punching the air as he crosses tbe finish line, the campaign was a positive way to mark the 10th anniversary of his wife Gloria's death. Gloria, who was 33 when she died, was diagnosed with an AVM - Arteriovenous Malformation - a cluster of abnormal blood vessels in the brain. She underwent a 15-hour operation to remove the vessels but sadly died on June 7, 2007 from complications. He said: "I set out with the aim that the fundraising would help me move forward and get on with my life and I feel like I've been able to achieve that." Mark, who runs a business providing till systems and credit and debit card machines, said the walk had cemented great friendships.
"We all kept each other going. There were some tough moments because 26 miles a day is one hell of a trek. Everyone brought something different to the mix and it was a fantastic experience. Gloria's sister walked the last couple of miles with us, which was great. "Everything changed for us on the Friday afternoon when Headway Bristol brought along the people who use their services to meet us. We realised what this was all about - helping others and that was a big moment for us. Having come out of the worst experience of my life, it was quite nice to experience one of the best. I think Gloria would have been really proud." Mark is organising a dinner and dance at the Holiday Inn, Filton on Friday June 9 and tickets cost £39. To book email markbrimson@gmail.com To donate to the Gloria Brimson Foundation for Headway Bristol visit https:// www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Mark-Brimson1

Work out your bookmark design and cut out a square of felt, measuring 8cms x 8cms, in your chosen background colour. Next, fold the square in half and place a line of fabric glue along one open end and in the centre of the square, where the fold line will be

Personal trainer Elliot puts his stamina to test A PERSONAL trainer from Downend will put his stamina to the test when he embarks on a gruelling five-day cycle ride to Paris. Elliot Cooke is taking a team of seven on his journey to raise money for two charities - the British Heart Foundation and Off the Record Bristol, which helps young adults with mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. The 20-year-old, who is based at Impact Gym in Staple Hill, got the bug for charity work after setting up a gym challenge back in November which raised £800 for Macmillan Cancer Support. But he decided he would up the ante by pushing himself even further. "The planning has been quite similar but the gym challenge wasn't as intense as what we're doing this time," he said. "It will be a real challenge for all of us which is the whole point
Team member Louise Towler with Elliot during one of their training sessions
as we didn't want it to be easy. We will be averaging 80-90 miles a day so that will be quite tough."
Elliot's team mates are Chuck Knight and Andy Li, both from Emersons Green, Louise Towler,

Elliot said: "I put the team together straight after my other challenge had finished. I knew everyone on the team before apart from Andy but not many of the others knew each other. I put a post out on Facebook and asked people to email me saying why they wanted to take part. "We've got a real mix of people. Chuck and Andy are very keen cyclists and cycle most days. Louise is training for Ironman so she's a keen cyclist but we're all pretty fit. "I do most of my cycling training at weekends and so far have been doing about 40 miles at a time. I also box and do a lot of training for that. It's a nightmare getting us all together to train so we do a lot of separate rides however we have some set

n NEWS dates coming up where we will all meet up as a big group." Elliot said it was a group decision to support the British Heart Foundation but he had a personal reason for wanting to raise money for Off the Record Bristol. "I've struggled with mental health and had to use the charity several years ago when I attended cognitive behaviour therapy sessions run by them. I can confidently say the work they do is amazing. It's a small charity but they do a lot of work and offer a lot of services, which is great." The team will leave Impact Gym on June 19 at 7am and will travel down to Dover, covering 215 miles and taking two and a half days. They will then relax for the 90 minute ferry ride before starting day three where they will pedal to Berck. After an overnight stay, day four will see the group covering 85 miles to Beauvais before the final stint on day five where they will cycle into Paris, heading for
the Eiffel Tower which will serve as their finishing line. After a well-earned two days in the French capital, the team will make their way back via bus and Eurotunnel with their bikes carried by their support vehicle. Elliot has set up an internet funding page for donations but is also organising a series of events, including raffles and pub quizzes, which will pay for the team's expenses. Elliot said: "I'm also running bootcamps at the gym every Sunday from 10-11am and the money raised will go towards our accommodation. We didn't want to ask people for money which will cover our expenses as we want it all to go to charity." To find out more about Elliot's bootcamps search for Pursuit Fitness Bristol on Facebook. Rare chance to become a firefighter PEOPLE in the Downend area have the chance this month to take the first step towards becoming fulltime firefighters. Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) is recruiting for the first time in eight years. Application forms will be available for aspiring firefighters to download for one week only from Tuesday May 2 as the service looks for the brightest and best to take part in a training school this October. AF&RS employs 455 fulltime or ‘wholetime’ firefighters - a number that has been falling since 2010. Firefighters leaving or retiring have not been replaced. As further reductions in the operational headcount would take the service below its minimum crewing levels, Avon Fire Authority recently approved 16 recruitment places. Under the campaign slogan ‘Yes you can’ AF&RS is now working to attract

applications from across South Gloucestershire, Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, and North Somerset. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Simon Shilton said: “This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join a fantastic organisation
YES YOU CAN be a firefighter
and begin a wonderful career. As well as the role played at emergencies, firefighters now have a much broader job, in particular working with people in our communities to reduce the risk of emergencies happening in the first place."
The service will encourage applications from groups currently under-represented within the workforce, particularly women and people from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) backgrounds. ACFO Shilton added: “We think it’s really important that our workforce is representative of the communities we serve. At the moment only 4.9% or our wholetime firefighters are women and 4.4% from BME backgrounds – both well below the averages in our area. “Fully qualified firefighters earn £29,000, have the opportunity to learn and be promoted, have amazing variety in their jobs and have the satisfaction of knowing they make a difference every day.” Visit www.yesyoucan.careers or watch the recruitment video at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ed_-N6T748U

Now it;s words and music! EMERSONS Green librarian Gill Clayton is visiting the Frampton Cotterell Singalong on May 4 to hand out free books. It’s all part of World Book Night, a celebration of reading. Gill has chosen the Frampton Cotterell Singalong, set up by Hilary Jay in September 2016 as part of her work with Curo Community Connectors with the support of Frampton Cotterell and District Community Centre. The aim of FC Singalong is to provide a relaxed and uplifting singing experience where people can enjoy the love of singing, feel part of a community and where ‘having a voice’ is secondary. The Singalong takes place at Crossbow House in School Road on the first Thursday in the month from 2 -3.30pm. Songsheets provide words to favourites, including songs from the shows.

ON OW ON THE St Augustine’s community in Downend has raised £5000 for two charities at a Ladies Pamper Night. Nearly 500 people turned out for the event last month, raising money for JDRF, a charity which works to cure, treat and prevent Type 1 diabetes and Brain Tumour Support, a local charity founded by Tina Mitchell Skinner whose husband died suddenly of a brain tumour. More than 60 stalls were selling everything from pizza, to shellac nails, spray tans, sports massages and retro gifts. The night was organised in memory of Downend teenager and former St Augustine’s primary school pupil James Hedge, who died in January 2016 from Diabetic Ketoacidosis. The 18-year-old had lived with Type 1 diabetes from the age of three. 400,000 people in the UK
are living with Type 1 diabetes and more than 29,000 of them are children. Organiser Clare Davis said: “I cannot thank everybody involved enough.” The St Augustine’s community is also holding a JDRF fundraising family walk from Frenchay to Eastville Park and back on SaturdayJune 24. n PETER'S VISION
Clarity and comfort SPRING is most definitely here. It's my favourite season, well joint favourite with summer, autumn and well winter really - but clearly all are favourites for different reasons. This spring, as well as the delight of longer days to enjoy with our three children and the warmer, lighter cycles to work I have been amazed by my new sunglasses. After 25 years or so of wearing glasses I was wondering if I had seen it all. Just a few weeks ago Ray-Ban launched their first ever genuine Ray-Ban prescription lenses clearly identifiable by the Ray-Ban engraving on the prescription lens. Now many of you who can see clearly with your natural eyes may not fully share my delight. For years you have been able to pick up a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses,
The team at Turners choose the colour you love & off you go. For those of us needing glasses or sunglasses for driving, reading etc we have had to choose either Ray-Ban sunglasses and then add our tinted prescription lenses or wear contact lenses just so we can pose in our Ray-Ban’s, ahem yes whether we choose to admit it or not we most probably do all pose in our designer sunglasses whatever the brand! So why am I so delighted? Well I

am now the proud (clearly very proud...) owner of a pair of genuine Ray-Ban prescription sunglasses complete with Ray-Ban logos engraved on the lenses. The choice you have is spectacular really. Classic aviator grey green, through brown into a myriad of choice of blue, green, gold, silver, lilac… the choice is almost endless. With my current renewed passion for sports I chose a blue mirror lens over a brown tint for optimum clarity and comfort. I was blessed to be the beneficiary of a rare hiccup in the ordering process - a kind soul in the lab has gifted me a free Polaroid upgrade. These are now truly the all conquering sunglasses I have desired for years. Apart from the million dollar look we give you with your new designer sunglasses, the key part from a technical perspective is your vision. I am pleased to report that my visual experience has been a highly rewarding one. Driving my vision is sharp & glare free, cycling or running & out walking my vision is super comfortable. Skiing in the sun was a dream, beautifully clear mountain scenery and defined
snow contours, and even in a brief snow storm I could still confidently see to get down the slope safely. So my recommendation - you should all get a pair! All you have to do is choose the Ray-Ban sunglass frame & lens colour you look fabulous in and trust us to complete your dream with clear vision! Our extended eye exam is more than just a sight test. Your thorough & in-depth extended eye exam includes time for your Optometrist to listen to any eye or vision concerns you may have as well as accurately checking your glasses prescription and providing you peace of mind about your eye health & vision. n AROUND THE WIs
BROMLEY HEATH WI I MUST admit that I didn’t make it to April’s meeting, but I am reliably informed by many who attended that it was a brilliant night of chatter and crafting. Our very own committee member Caroline King, gave a skilled demonstration of how to Décopatch a wooden coat-hanger and then it was over to those attending to have a go. It was described as being “very therapeutic and rewarding” and “simple but very effective” and several ladies couldn’t wait to order supplies and do some more at home! So, what is Décopatch? It is, I am told, a modern version of decoupage. Decoupage involves sticking paper pictures to hard surfaces, such as furniture or boxes and then adding several layers of varnish until it is smooth. However, Décopatch (invented by a French company) involves using special papers and PVA type glue that acts as glue and varnish to cover an object in a design of the crafters making. When describing the evening, Cheryl explained that the whole room was “buzzing with members talking, laughing, drinking tea and eating cake”. Jane said that she enjoyed meeting members she hadn't had chance to speak to before and “being able to natter to everyone on the table”. All this while they transformed plain wooden coat-hangers into objects of artistic beauty! Next month we have Almondsbury Garden Centre
coming to show us how to plant up hanging baskets. For more information ee our website: www.bromley heathwi.org.uk Diane Flower
BEECHMERE BELLES WI
THE Beechmere Belles have had a busy few months since the new year. We have renewed membership, got to know each other with wine and cheese evenings and had a number of truly fascinating speakers. Highlights include Mrs Shrimanker who brought her extensive sari collection to our meeting and gave us an insightful explanation of the garment's history and fashion influences. Some of us were lucky enough to act as models for the night! Our April meeting saw us making some pamper products that we were able to take home with us for a treat at a later date. We are a friendly WI with a broad mix of ages and we are always pleased to see new faces. Why not come along to our next meeting on May 25 at Emersons Green Village Hall at 7.30pm? Details via Facebook or email beechmere belles@gmail. com

We do love a bit of variety and the WI is all about ‘Inspiring’, I was certainly inspired. Moving on to our 22 May ‘Resolutions’ meeting. For over 90 years the WI has been instrumental in lobbying government to tackle social and environmental issues. This year we will be discussing 2 resolutions: 1) Alleviating loneliness 2) Keeping Microplastics out of our oceans. This is one of our most important meetings of the year, so our discussions will be followed by wine & cheese and hopefully some cake! Supper club, lunch club and craft club details will be discussed at the meeting. We welcome women of all ages and from any area; you don’t have to live in or around Mangotsfield to join us.Our meetings start at 7.30 and we do not charge for our visitors. DOWNEND businessmen Ian and Andrew Simmonds are staging Bristol’s first Leasehold Roadshow next month. Their aim is to help both landlords and homeowners understand the way leases work. Experts, including solicitors, insurance professionals, health and safety experts, the fire service and energy suppliers are taking part in the free event at The Bristol Pavilion at Gloucestershire’s Cricket Ground on June 1. As well as being on hand to give advice, they will also be giving talks every hour about particular topics followed by a question and answer session. Andrew and Ian are the managing and operation directors respectively from BNS Property Management. Andrew Simmonds said: “Over four million people in the UK own a home with a lease and leaseholders pay on average £1800 a year in service charge to a management company who in turn are responsible for services including arranging building insurance, upkeep of communal areas, repairs on the building, accountancy, health and safety etc.“The roadshow has been organised to help dispel the myths around leaseholds.” Register for the free, dropin event at: www.bns.co.uk/ leaseholdroadshow or call 0117 957 0809

Easter eggs for foodbanks
Look out for Bible Yarns
DOZENS of Easter eggs were handed to foodbanks by Circadian Trust, which operates South Gloucestershire’s leisure centres. The 139 eggs were donated by potential new members at the centres, including those in Kingswood, Yate, Longwell Green and Bradley Stoke in return for a reduced joining fee. They were distributed to charities including North Bristol foodbank, Resound foodbank, The Juice Community Project, Thornbury Baptist Church foodbank and Yate and Chipping Sodbury foodbank in time for the Easter weekend. Erica Cross, Marketing Manager at Circadian Trust said:“Food banks rely on donations to help local people in crisis and at Easter time it’s nice to be able to give a little something to families who wouldn’t normally have the pleasure of an Easter egg. We are delighted to be able to support other local charities and at the same time encourage more people to start a healthier, active lifestyle by joining our leisure centres.”
DOZENS of Bible characters have been created by local knitters in preparation for an event this autumn. The knitted people will be used to create scenes from Bible stories in four parish churches: St Anne, Syston, St Barnabas Warmley, St James Mangotsfield and St Mary’s over the weekend of October 14 and 15. By then there should be about 400 wool characters. Some of the scenes and backgrounds will also be knitted. In 2018 the Bible Yarns project will move to Bristol cathedral. There will be the chance during the entire month of August to see all of the stories brought together in one place in the Nave Aisles.

n BUSINESS OF THE MONTH Tell us about your company SURECAR has been running for over 25 years and I started off here about 20 years ago. Having trained to be a mechanic through a YTS scheme, I followed that with a few mechanical jobs in my late teens. Mainly looking at new cars, lorries and working for small recovery company. It was the latter that inadvertently sent me on to my Surecar adventure. The recovery company was taken over and I was surplus to requirements. The government at that time had a return to work programme. For an additional £10 per week, I went to my local garage (Surecar) to keep my hand in. They liked me and I liked them so it was fantastic news when they took me on as a mechanic. Over the next few years, I moved on to supervisor and manager of Surecar. When the owners wanted to sell the garage, I used all of my savings to pay for it. I recognised the potential. Since then, with a lot of support from my team, it’s gone from strength to strength. We purchased the property (previously leased) and I’ve extended the offering to Car Sales with the introduction of Surecar Direct. That coupled with leasing out the unit next door to a talented family member, who is great at body repairs – we have an improved offering. An award winning garage, locality of a body shop and a full end to end sales office. Our ethos is simple. Customer focused, friendly, courteous, value for money service. Treat customers how you want to be treated in
Focus on Surecar return. My recruitment policy is also simple - we only employee colleagues who can deliver in line with our ethos. Typically I run with 10 permanent staff and top that up from time to time with temporary resource.
What service do you provide to the people locally? We are a local service, we aim to be friendly, open, honest and trustworthy. We do have a lot of customers from Fishponds, but increasingly we attract customers from further afield. As part of our offering, we provide collection and delivery and loan cars free of charge. We also support (kit sponsor) Bromley Heath local community and football teams.
What is the best part of running your business and working in the area? My team are a great asset and I enjoy seeing the passion they have in customer service. Fishponds,Downend,Kingswood and surrounding are great areas, we have been here for over 25 years and have great relationships with customers. We frequently serve different generations of the same family.
What makes your service different from other companies? We are truly customer centric. We recognise that customers need a reliable, stable garage in the local
community. Here at Surecar we provide that.
What are your plans for the future of the business? To keep supporting customers and ensure our offering remains fit for purpose. We plan to remain local and build on the reputation we have built up. As national winners of the Good Garage Scheme 2016, Surecar would like to thank all of our loyal customers old and new for their continued custom and kind feedback. Finally thank you and well done to my team. They play such an important role in what we do, they live our values and support our customers. Jessie May is charity of year for GCCC
JESSIE May, the Kingswoodbased charity that provides hospice at home services to children with terminal illnesses in Bristol and surrounding areas, has been appointed as Gloucestershire County Cricket Club’s “charity of the year”. The partnership will run for the whole of the 2017 season, with players wearing the Jessie May logo on players’ shirts at the first match on 28 March. The charity will have the opportunity to fundraise on match days and hospitality tickets will be given to the charity’s beneficiaries. The sponsorship initiative is also being supported by Bristol financial management business
Ovation Finance. Will Brown, Chief Executive of Gloucestershire Cricket, said: “Jessie May is an unbelievable local charity and one hopefully well known to many of our supporters. This is the first time that the iconic Gloucestershire County Championship ‘Whites’
will bear the name of a charity and we are really excited to be playing a part in making that happen. Many thanks to Ovation Finance and all the business and personal supporters who have made this possible in what we hope will be a great year for Jessie May.”
Jessie May cares for children with terminal illness in Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Wiltshire. It costs about £1,200,000 to provide this care annually and the charity is almost entirely dependent on public support.

There’s only one Lewis Powell … LEWIS Powell is a hero for Mangotsfield United after scoring more than 100 goals for the club but now he has a rival Lewis Powell. The Field signed Lewis G Powell on loan from Westonsuper-Mare just before the transfer embargo and in the
Easter Monday match at Bishop’s Cleeve Lewis G Powell scored with a lay-on from Lewis Powell. “I doubt that has happened too many times in the Southern League!” said Martin Preedy, from the club, who added that the player confusion was eased because Lewis G is known as Lew
Powell. The original Lewis Powell was the toast of the Mangos when he notched up his century in the match against Bridgwater Town and went on to get a hattrick in the 6-0 win. Mangotsfield ended their 65th season with a creditable 70+ points, compared with 48
last time. The end of season awards event is at the clubhouse on May 5. Plans are already under way for the 2017-18 season, which starts on Saturday August 12. Keep an eye on the website for details of pre-season fixtures and other club news..

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE
with Tim Button, Doctor of Chiropractic at Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step in Mangotsfield
Blog 39 – Michael Jordan Joins Cleve Chiropractic! FIRSTLY, I must apologise for missing last month’s blog deadline. I hate to use excuses but what could go wrong, went wrong. I like to write my blog in the last week so I can capture the full month’s events but in the last week last month we made the ridiculous decision to transfer our internet at Cleve Chiropractic from BT to Virgin. Wow, who knew how much damage could be done in such a short space of time? Within minutes of starting the process, everything broke. Trying not to be too boring but everything in the clinic runs through a network and everything connected to the network broke. So, by the time the Virgin engineers left saying that everything was ok, I had no Internet, no clinic software, no email, no online booking, no access to the server, no telephones, no card machine, no alarm system, no CCTV and no X-rays. I had to call
in some serious favours from my IT friends and after about 8 hours work we managed to get the clinic software and internet working. Over the next week we managed to get each piece back up and running, one by one. Each thing needing to be specially configured. I have been a long believer that computers run on the power of magic and the magic I had been using thought I was taking it for granted and it left me along with the relaxed Virgin engineers. On the plus side, I have taken on a new local great IT engineer called Gary Cole from Planet Data Networks who is in the process of updating all my IT so that this won’t happen again. So Iain and Hannah my married Chiropractic couple have made the inevitable decision to move back closer to their families in Devon and Cornwall and are setting up a small clinic in Exeter. As they build the practice they will still be here over the next few months. As sad as it is to lose our old friends to Devon, it’s also exciting to welcome our new Chiropractor
Michael Jordan! Where he may be a handsome man, he is not the 54 year old 6’6” NBA superstar. I can confirm that he is a far superior chiropractor than the famous Basketball player who when asked about his links to Cleve Chiropractic said “he has never heard of them” and he “has never clicked a back in his life”. We are waiting for his response to our invitation for a free treatment from our own Michael Jordan ‘Chiropractic’ superstar… Mike joined me in April on a trip to Milton Keynes to treat some real heroes, the British Disability Strongman athletes. These guys were truly inspirational proving that so often a disability is no disability at all. It makes me emotional just thinking back to the day of a group of Chiropractors treating the strongman team on a training day. Amputee? Cerebral Palsy? Sight loss? Spinal injury? Lifting a 100kg stone ball onto metal drum? Pulling a truck? Not a problem…life’s true inspiratory figures. Not as famous as a film stars but normal? Definitely not. Superhero? Defiantly yes. I love my job and working in disability
sport is the most rewarding thing that I do. We are looking forward to helping the athletes in May at the British Strongest Disabled Man event. Keep an eye on our facebook page and twitter accounts for photos and videos for acts of seemingly impossible strength from people who have overcome tremendous difficulty. Oh and lastly did you know that the IAAF World Athletics and World Para Athletics Championships are being held in London this summer? I just received an email asking me to join them as an official Chiropractor for both of the championships treating the best athletes in the world. A great honour within another great year for Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step.
