Community centre opens at last

AFTER nearly six months of delays, Lyde Green Community Centre has finally been handed over to South Gloucestershire Council from the building consortium. The centre, which is the result of a partnership between South Gloucestershire Council, building consortium Emerson Green Urban Village Ltd, Sovereign Housing Association and Lyde Green Community Association, was initially set to open back in January, but a series of snags held things up. little girl with a big heart seven, who attends St Stephen’s school in Kingswood, and Zach aged three. Speaking of the work that Paul did and her family’s plans for fundraising, Amy said: “When Paul was still alive, he decided that he wanted to set up some funding for the charity Brain Tumour Research. There’s a lack of research into brain tumours at the moment, and the more you talk to people, you realise most people know someone who has died from a brain tumour. “When Paul was diagnosed, we set up a Just Giving page to fund 15 days of brain tumour research at a cost of £41,000. So far we have raised £21,000, and this inspired my seven-year-old daughter Olive to get involved too. She’d been nagging me to help her organise a cake sale ever since Paul died, and now that I’ve finished my masters studying for the summer we decided to go ahead and set one up. “I started by posting about the cake sale on the Lyde Green Local Facebook page, and had a great response – loads of local people and businesses including Budgens and Sainsbury’s in Emersons Green and Hannah’s Cheesecakery in Lyde Green said they would donate cakes, which is

fantastic.” Olive’s cake sale took place outside of her house on Willowherb Road on Saturday July 21. In total, £500 was raised on the day, with £433 coming directly from the sale of cupcakes, cookies, cheesecakes, lemon drizzle cake, banana loaf, brownies, caramel popcorn cake and lots more. Speaking of the success of the cake sale, Amy added: “The community were amazing and most people gave extra money – we had people posting money through the door all weekend too!” In addition to Olive’s fundraising, Paul’s widow Julie also completed the Three Peaks Challenge during the same weekend with six others and two drivers, and has also organised spinathons to raise funds at Easton and Horfield Leisure Centres. Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, but just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this disease. August, 2018 BLACKHORSE Primary School in Emersons Green has been making quite a name for itself in the world of cross-country running over the last few years. Now it wants to go further – by installing its own running track around the edge of the school field. Nine former Blackhorse pupils run at a national level and Ethan Gill is the best long jumper in the South West. Blackhorse’s 60-strong Track Team has won the CSET cross-country league for seven years in a row and the school boasts five out of the top 10 ranked girls in South Gloucestershire and one of the top ten boys. It’s not all about competition though as there are more than 30 children who run the daily mile every lunchtime, led by headetacher Simon Botten, who is a keen runner and is due to take on the Green Man 45-mile Ultramarathon around Bristol in September. Mr Botten explained: “The good thing about running is that all our pupils – fast and slow, young and old – can all have a go. Some of the children who

Lyde Green sizzles in the sun LYDE Green’s third annual Summer Sizzler saw families come out in their droves to make the most of the sunshine. Taking place on Saturday July 7, the event was organised by Lyde Green Community Association (LGCA) and took over the space outside the Bristol and Bath Science Park on Dirac Crescent from 11am to 4pm. As part of the stalls on offer, visitors had the opportunity to meet LGCA, find out more information about the newly handed over Lyde Green Community Centre and support them by buying a raffle ticket for the chance to win prizes such as clubhouse vouchers from The Kendleshire golf club, adult colouring books and wine glasses. In addition, there was also the chance to find out more about local travel services from travelwest and meet local community groups such as Lyde Green Neighbourhood Watch. For the little ones, playgroup providers Little Play at Lyde

Green also offered biscuit decorating, and there was also an inflatable fun fair, face painting and glitter tattoos. Performances included a demonstration from BMX freestyler Matti Hemmings, music from Rat Pack Singer Danny Guest, Mangotsfield Primary School choir and Sounds Delighted community choir, as well as an energetic routine from Dance Station. The Fun Charity Dog Show supporting StreetVet by Vets4Pets Bristol Emersons Green had to be cancelled due to the hot weather. Refreshments includeda

barbecue provided by Emersons Green Scouts, Coffee at Lyde serving iced drinks and cakes and Vintage Box Catering offering gin, Pimms and craft beers. In addition, Pizza Adorare, Crust & Crumbs and Complete Waffle also had stalls. Kelly Adams, chair of LGCA said: “We’re really proud to see the Summer Sizzler growing and we were thrilled by the support from performers, stall holders and businesses who donated some great raffle prizes. “It was brilliant to see such a good turnout in spite of the blistering heat and the competition with the football! The Sizzler is all about bringing the community together and providing some summer family fun so we hope everyone enjoyed it. We’ve also been really lucky that as a charity made up of volunteers so many people gave up their time for free to help with

the preparations or on the day thank you all! “The event is still really new and we’re still finding our feet so any feedback, positive or negative, would be gratefully received and will help us make sure that next year’s event is bigger and better!” Councillor Rachael Hunt added: “I was so excited to see the growth of the Lyde Green Summer Sizzler this year – with additional stalls, live entertainment and fun activities for children. Hats off to the organising committee for an event open to and enjoyed by our local community once again.” If you’d like to join Lyde Green Community Association’s events team and get involved in helping to organise next year’s Summer Sizzler on Saturday July 6, email lydegreenca@hotmail. com.

Community centre opens at last From Page 1 The handover from Emerson Green Urban Village Ltd took place at the end of June, and the operator, Lyde Green Community Association, has now moved in. The team have been busy getting the centre ready to open its doors over the summer, and jobs have included ordering furniture, getting contracts for waste management in place and ensuring that the building is ready for hirers and the community to use. The community centre features two function rooms: one with a hard floor, sink and enclosed outdoor space which will make it especially suitable for children’s groups and birthday parties, and one that is more formal and could be used by local organisations and groups as a meeting space. In addition, the facility also has a large hall for sports such as five-a-side football, badminton and fitness groups, an office, male and female changing facilities, toilets and a baby changing room, as well as a smaller room that could be used for activities such as therapy sessions and other clinics. One of the highlights of the facility is a café area, managed by Coffee at Lyde, who plan to serve a range of hot drinks, cakes and snacks. The space will have tables and chairs,

Alv Hirst and Kelly Adams, of LGCA as well as WIFI, and it is hoped it will provide the perfect place for residents to meet and chat. Alv Hirst, community development and centre manager, said: “We are delighted to have finally moved into Lyde Green Community Centre. We are starting completely from scratch and want it to be a place that any resident feels that they can use. “As Lyde Green is growing community, we think it’s important to have a social space where people can connect and come together, and we want to create a facility that is friendly and open to all.”

National Award winners of the Good Garage Scheme

South Gloucestershire’s cabinet member for communities Councillor Paul Hughes said: “It is fantastic to see this great new community facility, which will serve residents of the Lyde Green area, completed and ready for use. The community centre is a large, modern landmark building with a café, large multi-function hall, meeting/function rooms, treatment room, changing facilities and will be a great asset to the local area. “We look forward to working with the Lyde Green Community Association, who will be running the building and managing the day to day bookings and events at the venue, to deliver a wide range of activities to benefit all ages.” Councillor Rachael Hunt added: “I’m so looking forward to seeing the community centre buzzing full of activities for the local community. The LGCA have worked so hard with South Gloucestershire Council to get to this point and I’ve heard their many exciting plans for the coming months that will enable local residents to get in and start using this new asset in the area. It’s a real symbol of what the community can achieve.” To keep up to date with the opening plans for Lyde Green Community Centre, visit their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/

‘Cars of the future’ centre plans unveiled A PLANNING application for a new research centre in Emersons Green has been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council, with the aim of creating hundreds of jobs in the area. Work is set to begin next year on the Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) at the Bristol and Bath Science Park. It is due to open in 2020 and will pioneer the development of ultra-low emission vehicles. The aim of the development, which is going to be built next to the National Composites Centre, is to use the engineering expertise of the University of Bath for the benefit of the UK’s car industry. £28.9 million worth of funding for the project has been received from the Higher Education Funding Council for England, and IAAPS is set to create an additional £800 million turnover for the UK automotive sector and nearly 1,900 new jobs.

In addition, the centre will help to address the engineering skills shortage facing the UK automotive sector, supporting new apprenticeships, honours degrees, masters and doctoral courses. It is also hoped that by 2023, it will be one of the top three sites in the world for automotive powertrain research. The planning application (reference PK18/2422/RM) includes plans for a 13,250

square metre building (which is the size of 1.8 football pitches), as well as parking for cars and bicycles. Regarding the impact of the construction on residents, the planning application states: “The application proposals will not give rise to any significant adverse impacts for local residents. The nearest residential properties are located some distance to the east of the

application site and are separated by an undeveloped plot of land also within the Science Park boundary. A Noise Assessment accompanies the application and demonstrates that no significant impacts will occur.” The University of Bath have also submitted two additional applications for planning permission and listed building consent (references PK18/1864/F and PK18/1865/ LB) for the proposed refurbishment and restoration of the listed Newlands Farmhouse which is located on the site, in order to allow it to be used as meeting and office space within the IAAPS development. The planning application can be viewed on South Glos Council’s planning website: http://developments.southglos. gov.uk/online-applications/ The application is open to receive comments from residents and the decision deadline is Wednesday August 22.

n INTRODUCING OUR NEW TOWN COUNCILLOR URSULA Shepherd was elected to represent the Emersons Green Ward on Emersons Green Town Council following a narrow victory in a by-election on Thursday July 12. Representing the Conservative Party, she polled 203 votes against Labour’s Sandie Davis’s 198. Emersons Green Voice caught up with Ursula to find out about her plans for her new role

Town councillor Ursula Shepherd with district councillors Colin Hunt and Judy Adams

Tell us a bit more about you Living locally in Lyde Green with my two daughters, I have firsthand experience of the problems we face as well as the needs of our community. It is extremely exciting to be the first elected Town Councillor who lives in Lyde Green and represents the area. It is an honour to represent our growing community for all issues that concern our local residents. If it’s important to my neighbours then it’s important to me, as we are equally affected.

We have also have a fantastic Neighbourhood Watch committee and team in Lyde Green who work tirelessly to keep us informed and safe. Please get involved with this if you can. It’s very rewarding.

Why did you want to become a councillor?

What do you hope to achieve in your role?

I am passionate about my local community and have campaigned for youth activities in the area and continue to attend community meetings about ways to reduce anti-social behaviour. Already we have funding for a youth worker team to get involved and be out there engaging the children weekly where they congregate. We were advised at the Community Engagement Forum last month that anti social behaviour has reduced so this initiative seems to be working already.

I have wasted no time in trying to make a difference, having picked up on a few things on social media, for example the use of the playing fields which Longwell Green Football Club are managing (on behalf of Green Square). After a very positive conversation with John Gibbs, Chairman of LGFC, I am delighted to hear that the fields will be accessible by locals for playing football or other games and anyone wanting to make arrangements should contact LGFC directly. They will be opening a cafe too which invites

spectators. This should be a wonderful boost for children and adults to get involved in sport in our neighbourhood and will go far in terms of giving our young people something fun to do and be involved in. Having somewhere fun and safe for our children to play and grow up is of primary importance and I will continue to fight to

protect our green spaces such as Lyde Green Common as well as to support accessible local facilities for Emersons Green and Lyde Green. It is my privilege to serve my community. Residents can contact Ursula by emailing ursula@ childprotectionacademy.co.uk or calling 07862 849033

n NEWS A BUS service linking Emersons Green, Mangotsfield and Downend with Southmead Hospital is being axed as the operator pulls out of the area. The number 10 has been run by Wessex Bristol buses under a contract from South Gloucestershire Council since First’s number 18 was abandoned as commercially unviable a year ago. Running from 5.45am to 8.50pm each day, it links Lyde Green, Emersons Green, Mangotsfield, Downend and Frenchay with UWE’s Frenchay campus, Bristol Parkway station and Southmead. But after the end of August the service will no longer run and passengers say it will leave them without a direct route to the hospital on public transport. As rumours emerged that the service was being axed, Wessex at first said only that its contract with South Gloucestershire Council had not been renewed. Then on July 20, owner Rotala announced that it had sold the business to transport giant Stagecoach and said the 10

11

Anger as bus link to hospital, station and college is axed would not be transferred to the new operator. Passengers are angry at the loss of the service, saying it is vital for people travelling to the hospital, Parkway station and the SGS College Filton campus. Many believe it has been hit by the introduction of the Metrobus route, which currently links Emersons Green only with UWE and the city centre. Writing on public forum Stoke Lane Action Group, Kim Cleave said: “Local people totally rely on this service to get to Southmead Hospital and Parkway station. It is unacceptable to withdraw our only direct bus service to access health care.” Ruth Pailing said: “Only bus I can get to Southmead for an 8am start. Back to the car and parking on the streets again.”

Janice Malschuk said: “Not good for the students going to SGS College. It’s the only public bus from Emersons to the college.” Action group members are urging passengers to write to the council to demand it finds another operator for the service. A Rotala spokeswoman said 65 staff and 9 vehicles were being transferred to Stagecoach from September 2 - less than half the company’s estimated workforce of 200 in the Bristol area. She said: “The 10 service to Southmead Hospital will be withdrawn, as the local authority has decided it cannot provide the subsidy necessary to make this service viable.” A council spokesman said: “Following the Wessex decision to withdraw from the local bus market, South Gloucestershire

Council are unable to extend the contract for the 10 service, which was awarded to Wessex on an emergency basis for one year following the withdrawal of the 18 service at the end of Aug 2017. “Wherever possible, SGC will seek to provide an alternative solution.” The council is advising people who used the 10 for Southmead Hospital to travel to Fishponds or Staple Hill and change onto the 17, change for the 77 at UWE or take the 77 or 82 from Bristol Parkway. • Changes have also been announced to First services. The 49A, introduced at the end of April, is withdrawn and will return in September. The 49 leaving Emersons Green at 7.20am on weekdays and the return service leaving the Centre at 6.05pm have ceased.

Sue Mountstevens visited the store on July 24 and is pictured with Ben Langford Young and Tracy Cannard. was very well received by our customers, with a fantastic response. Sue was very nice and we had a lovely chat over a coffee and is always welcome in our store.” Ms Mountstevens said following a forum in Yate in June: “Being able to have meaningful discussions about policing is vital in ensuring that we are doing everything we can to keep the residents of Avon and Somerset safe and feeling safe.”

Downend School is full of Pride IT has been a familiar sight to students at Downend School for the last four years. So when the time came for Victor Minkov to have his pony tail chopped off it was a big event - and more than 200 people paid to see it. Mr Minkov’s charity haircut was just one of a series of special events and activities at Downend School’s first Pride Day. The event celebrated achievements and brought the school together as a community at the end of the academic year. Students paid £1 to ditch school uniform for the day and played music, ran stalls and took part in quizzes. There was a picnic lunch, ice cream van, candy floss machine and a photo booth, while special activities included an inflatable assault course, sponge the teacher and a stage make-up workshop. There were also sporting events, including basketball and rowing machine challenges and table tennis. The Pride Day - named after the school’s values - has replaced

the annual Activities Days in an effort to help the school cope with funding pressures. Head teacher Lisa Howell told the Voice she was proud that curriculum cuts and class size rises had been avoided for next year but said Downend, like all other schools, was having to be creative to “do more with less.” “We are also proud that in difficult times we have increased lunchtime provision, expanded our extra-curricular activities and started a school newspaper. All this is down to the hard work and commitment of our excellent staff,” she said. Mr Minkov, a mathematics higher level teaching assistant and the school’s Duke of

Edinburgh Awards manager, raised £145 in donations on the day to add to £640 already pledged online with his charity haircut. The money - and the 17” (43cm) pony tail - will be donated to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which provides free wigs made from real hair to children and young adults aged up to 24 who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment or other illnesses. The charity also funds research projects into childhood cancers. Mr Minkov said: “I didn’t grow it initially with the charity in mind but once I decided to cut it, people said the hair was nice, I shouldn’t let it go to waste.

“A lot of students wanted me to shave everything and go bald!” The charity haircut was carried out by Yate barber Ben Lea, a friend of Mr Minkov’s from Sodbury Vale Musical Comedy Club. Anyone who wants to donate to Mr Minkov’s charity can do so online by visiting www. justgiving.com/fundraising/ victor-minkov The Downend Pride Day also saw the launch of the Downend School Community History wedding 1993 & ArtsSilver Project, a partnership between the school, Historic England and the community to explore the area’s hidden past. Organised by the school’s Innovation Centre manager, Nick Smith, the project will bring together history, geography, art and music students with artist Mary Flower and filmmaker Matt Pelly, using archive material to create new work interpreting the area’s past. Mr Smith is keen for anyone who has old pictures, film, video or stories from Downend’s history to contact him by email at Nick.Smith@CSET.co.uk.

Emersons Green vet Martin is top dog A VET from Emersons Green has been named as the Vet of the Year at an awards ceremony. Martin Brice, who owns the Emersons Green Veterinary Surgery on Emerson Way, was given the award after he received nominations from his clients and staff. Martin qualified as a vet in South Africa in 1995, and spent the start of his career working in Shropshire, Johannesburg, Australia and New Zealand before finally deciding to settle in the UK permanently. He worked in Birmingham and London for a short time, where he became aware of the Emersons Green development being built in Bristol. After passing by with a friend who lived in the city, he decided that the area would be the perfect place to open a veterinary practice. After Martin joined forces with a fellow vet, the surgery opened its doors in 2000, and the team were delighted to win an award for UK Vet Practice

of the Year at the 2011 Petplan Veterinary Awards. The judging process for the 2018 Petplan Veterinary Awards started in October 2017 with over 22,000 nominations received from across the country, of which 6,000 were for vets. The awards honour the UK’s most outstanding vets, veterinary nurses, practices, practice managers and support staff and are known as ‘The Oscars’ of the

veterinary world. Martin, who lives in Tytherington with his wife Louise and two daughters, was praised at the awards ceremony in Birmingham for his leadership skills and compassion. He said afterwards: “I got a call back in March to say that I was in the final three for the Vet of the Year category and I couldn’t believe it! I certainly never thought I’d win the award

and it’s extremely humbling. I am so grateful for the support of my wonderful staff at Emersons Green Vets – this award is testament to the hard work of the whole team. “During the time that we have been open we have seen the local community grow and flourish. We’re also one of the very few independent veterinary practices left in Bristol, and after being in business for 18 years it’s so lovely to have validation from my clients too.” Speaking about Martin’s win, veterinary nurse Rachel Chilcott said: “Everyone at Emersons Green Veterinary Surgery is very proud of Martin and we are over the moon that we now have an award winning boss! “He thoroughly deserves this award as he goes above and beyond on a daily basis for his clients, patients and employees. The pet owners of Emersons Green are very lucky to have such an excellent, award winning vet on their door step.”

Olympiad proves a record breaker

Welcome news for cyclists

WORK to make cycling safer between Downend and Yate is set to be carried out in the next six months. South Gloucestershire Council has proposed a series of improvements to the Yate Spur, a route linking the Bristol and Bath Railway Path to Yate. The plans include providing new marked cycle lanes and warning signs on roads in the Westerleigh area to make cycling safer on sections of the route which do not run on off-road paths. At present cyclists who leave the Bristol to Bath path at Mangotsfield station can travel from Emersons Green to just south of Westerleigh on off-road paths. But the route then moves on to busy Westerleigh Road, before moving onto Broad Lane and then back onto Westerleigh Road in the middle of the village. The council is planning to put bike warning signs at the roadside and further markings on the road in Westerleigh, as well as adding bike lanes and removing the centre lines from Shire Way in Yate, which is linked to the route via Besom Lane. The plans were put out to consultation during July and, subject to any modifications as a result of public comments, the council intends to make the changes by March next year. It is also looking at a possible future spur route which would link to the Rodford Way/Westerleigh Road roundabout in Yate, from where cyclists could use the town’s “road to nowhere” to reach the

railway station. A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: “We want to provide and improve cycling infrastructure in South Gloucestershire, so that individuals and families can enjoy the health and environmental benefits. “The next phase of work we want to do is add to the Yate Spur of the Bristol and Bath Railway Path cycle route, particularly in some places where the route takes cyclists close to traffic on the roads, because feeling and being safe is vital to make cycling enjoyable, but also a real alternative to taking the car for some journeys. “We have been listening to local residents and users of the path through consultation and we have plans to improve signage and safety for cyclists at points of Westerleigh Road in Westerleigh and Shire Way in Dodington.”

A RECORD 868 children from 14 Mangotsfield and Downend primary schools took part in the 2018 MaD Olympiad. The event, run by the CSET Sports Partnership at Mangotsfield School, involved multi skills and athletics for Year 2 in the morning and a hugely competitive KS2 athletics event in the afternoon. Organiser Wendy O'Donnell said the event's success was largely down to the 41 Year 7/ 8 students who supported the day as Sports Leaders. Esmee Chard, one of the Year 8 Leaders, said "I really enjoyed The Olympiad because I got the chance to encourage the children throughout the event. They were determined and excited to improve" The CSET Sports Partnership will be recruiting more sports leaders in September and would welcome applications from anyone keen to get involved.

n PETER'S VISION

Optometrists look on the bright side A PATIENT of mine came to see me this week for an extended eye exam clearly with a question in mind. After exchanging our pleasantries they said boldly ‘you’re an optimist aren't you’. Well I thought, you know me well! Perhaps it’s the positive approach & enjoyment I bring to caring for our patients I wondered, or is it the investments and advancements we are making with our practices at a time when some are sadly taking the opposite view of life on the high street. Actually what they had meant to ask was you’re an Optometrist aren’t you? Ah well I thought as we laughed about the name confusion. Perhaps if I just used the job title Ophthalmic Optician life would be more straightforward,

after all when my family started out in the 1930s we were among the first opticians to become Ophthalmic Opticians - qualified specialists. It set me thinking, names are so much more than just a way to refer to a person or an object. Take our spectacle lenses for example, I considered the names for our lens range for perhaps longer than one ought to. At the end I think you can see what I’m trying to achieve straight forward communication of just what the lens will do for you. Take for example our Horizon lens - a single focus lens that lets you see further and more clearly than regular single vision lenses. Or you can choose a Brunel All Vision lens (no prizes for guessing who this is named after). These

spectacle lenses are bespoke engineered to give you the most natural clear vision across a range of distances from far to close, try a pair and you’ll see what I mean. I have also considered the names of our eye appointments; an extended eye exam is just that - thorough & in-depth eye care. If you have a sore, dry, watery, red or itchy eye then it’s the Front of the Eye Clinic for you. If you have flashes, floaters, blur or distortion in your vision then its the Back of the Eye Clinic. I will admit though that as I can see such a wide range of unusual conditions I also have a Specialist Clinic which stops the list becoming just a little too long to be manageable! Whether you consider yourself an optimist or not, you’re most

welcome to come and see us for your eye care & glasses. To arrange an extended eye exam for yourself or those you love, please call 0117 962 2474 or 0117 965 4434. Appointments can also be booked via our website, or just pop in to our practices in Henleaze or Fishponds and say Hi!

The changing nature of school exams

T

David Spence, headteacher of Mangotsfield School, explains the new GCSEs

HIS summer Year 11 students will receive mainly new, numbered grades when they open their envelopes. It is part of a move to make the exams more challenging. The change has merged from the government’s drive to improve schools’, pupils’ and employers’ confidence in the qualifications, ensuring that young people have the knowledge and skills needed to go on to work and further study. This could be very confusing for parents and employers, so I have had a go at explaining the essential changes below. There’s a lot to think about! For my school, it has meant that we have very deliberately focused on giving our students as many opportunities as possible to test themselves under the right conditions. We have had two sets of mock exams, although frequently using part-sections identified as more problematic, and have revisited content in

lessons all the time. What this meant for our school was a need to collaborate more closely with colleagues in our Trust to agree an approach together to determining work at different grades to help when assessing work. Essentially, there is more content, there are more papers (three in maths, for example), no coursework to speak of, and they tend to be longer. It is a real step-up in terms of challenge. The content of the new exams was taught from September 2015, and then examined in Summer 2017, for maths and English Language and Literature only. So, what do the grades mean? GCSEs are now graded on a new ‘reformed’ scale of 9 to 1, with 9 the highest grade (rather than A* to G for the ‘unreformed’ GCSEs), to distinguish clearly between the reformed (new) and unreformed (old-style) qualifications. English and maths were graded 9 to 1 in

2017, and this year the following 17 subjects will have numbered grading: Art, the Sciences, Computer Science, Drama, Food preparation and nutrition, Geography, History, Languages, Music, PE and RS. Most others follow in 2019, so we’re still not fully there yet! Will grades be lower? Ofqual, who regulate exams, has made it clear that students sitting these examinations for the first time will not be at a disadvantage. While students may come out of exams feeling they have done less well, as we saw in 2017 with the new maths and English roughly the same proportion of students who achieved a C and above in each of the old qualifications will achieve a grade 4 and above in the new GCSEs. The exam boards will base standards on results of 16-year-olds who took the older GCSE qualifications, so that it does

August, 2018 not disadvantage this year’s Year 11 students. Will that really be the case, given everything is so new? Agreed, it takes a few years for teachers and students to get used to new qualifications and there are fewer past exam papers for students to practise on. However, the exam regulator Ofqual recognises that teachers are not as familiar with the new qualifications as they were with the old ones. In theory then, it would not be fair to penalise students for this, so the exam boards use statistics to help set grade boundaries. For example, a student who would have previously achieved a grade C or above would be expected to get a grade 4 or above in the new GCSEs. While the content and assessment have changed, Ofqual says it will make sure that grades are awarded fairly and your child will not be disadvantaged by the changes. Why has this new grading system been introduced? The introduction of the 9-1 system increases the number of higher

grades than the previous A*- G system. It should push the very brightest students at the top end even more. By using 9-1, there are now six different grades from 4 to 9, rather than four in the old system (A*, A, B, C), which means individual students can be more accurately recognised in terms of their results. How does the new grading system match the old one? The new grade scale will not be directly equivalent to the existing one. However, to be fair to the students and to give meaning to the new grades, Ofqual has decided there will be some comparable points between the old grades, and the approach to awarding will ensure that, in the first year of a new qualification, broadly the same proportion of pupils will: • achieve a grade 7 and above, as currently achieve a grade A and above • will achieve a grade 4 and above, as currently achieve a grade C and above

23

• will achieve a grade 1 and above, as currently achieve a grade G and above It is important to realise the new GCSEs have more grades. While it is true to say that the same proportion of candidates will achieve a 4 and above as currently get a C and above, it is not true to say a grade 4 is directly equivalent to a grade C. Actually, a grade 4 represents the bottom two thirds of a grade C, while a grade 5 is equivalent to the top third of grade C and the bottom third of grade B. As the top grade is grade 9, will there be similar numbers of 9s awarded to A*s currently? There is more differentiation in the reformed/new qualifications, as there are three top grades (7, 8 and 9), compared to two in the legacy/ old system. I want my child to aim for the equivalent of a grade C across all subjects but I am confused as to whether they should be aiming for a 4 or a 5? Because the same proportion of candidates will get a 4 and above as currently get a C and above, aiming for 4 and above is

equivalent to aiming for C and above. This is, and will remain, the level that pupils must achieve so they are not required to continue studying English and maths after secondary school. The government has defined a grade 4 as a ‘standard’ pass. Where employers, FE providers and universities currently accept a grade C, the government expects them to continue recognising a grade 4. But I have heard there will be a ‘standard’ pass and a ‘strong pass’; what does this mean? The government will publish schools’ results, not just at the ‘standard pass’ (grade 4 and above), but also at the ‘strong pass’ (at grade 5 and above) in school performance tables only. The number of pupils achieving a ‘strong pass’ will be one of the measures by which schools are judged. It is a bit of a minefield and there will be a few butterflies on the evening before Results Day on August 23, but fingers-crossed to students and parents alike for the big day!

A cultured day out in Bath

DESPITE travelling the world any chance I get, I’m also a firm believer in making the most of all the special places we have right here in the UK. And certainly one of my favourite things about living in Bristol is just how close the stunning city of Bath is. As can be expected, I’ve had many day trips to Bath over the years. So now I want to pass on my tips for how to have a cultured day out in Bath. No trip to Bath would be complete without visiting the thermal springs that helped to give the city its name. When Romans settled here all those years ago, they built a reservoir to help control the natural hot water flowing through the city. They also believed the baths to be sacred, resulting in them throwing coins and jewellery into the springs as offerings to the Gods; some of which are on display today in the accompanying museum. Another historic marvel within Bath is the abbey, which is located next to the baths. This abbey is over four hundred years old, and is captivating both from the outside and inside, with its intricate stonework, stained glass windows and large size. Bath is also famously entwined with Jane Austen and her books as Bath was her home between

The intricate ceiling of Bath

the years of 1801 and 1806. The Royal Crescent parade is an iconic symbol of Bath and is often home to period drama film sets, while The Jane Austen Centre nearby is worth a visit if you enjoy her books and want to learn more about the author herself. Another must for both history and Jane Austen lovers would be The Assembly Rooms. Opened in 1771, and hugely popular with the middle and upper classes, this is your chance to see how an 18th century ballroom or walkabout room looked. It’s here that large gatherings of people would meet, dance, drink tea, play cards and attend musical performances. Equally, they would also come here during the day to “walk about”. Within Jane Austen’s novels, multiple walkabout rooms

have been described, with many suggesting that The Assembly Rooms in Bath were her main inspiration. Aside from all of the culture and history that Bath is famous for, it’s also a fantastic shopping destination. Many stores are housed within beautiful Georgian buildings, and during the run-up to Christmas, one of the largest markets in the country appears and dazzles everyone. Bath is also great for outdoors lovers. The Botanical Gardens, for instance, are stunning in the warmer months, and you would

be wise to always look out for the ‘tongue in cheek’ garden displays that the Women’s Institute often get involved in. Personally, I think that being just 15 minutes from Bath by train is one of the many things there is to love about living in Bristol. But what do you think? Justine Cross is a travel writer and business blogger based in Emersons Green. You can read more of her travel stories at www. wandereroftheworld.co.uk. n AROUND THE WIs DOWNEND WI JUNE'S meeting was all about drumming. Our member Pippa kindly ran a session teaching us different techniques to get different sounds from the same drum. This was a fun and interactive session where we all made music together! Myself and our president Sam attended the Avon Federation lunch at Bristol Golf Club at the end of June. It is an opportunity for all the WIs in the area to get together to meet up and was fascinating to talk to some ladies from Blaise WI who set up their WI in 1972 and are still members and

on the committee! The speaker for the lunch was Emma Britton, the breakfast presenter on BBC Radio Bristol. She is an interesting and funny speaker, so if you ever get chance to go to an event where she is – do it! At our next meeting on July 31 we will be joined by Roger from the Avon Local History Association who will be talking about the history of Downend. I’m looking forward to learning some interesting facts about the area we live in. We meet at 7.30pm in Christchurch Hall, North Road on the last Tuesday of the month. For a small donation you can have tea, coffee and cake together with a raffle to win some lovely prizes. So if you want to know what we are about, please join us either as a guest or a paid up member. If you would like more information feel free to contact me by email at downendwi@ yahoo.co.uk Julie Secretary MANGOTSFIELD WI

WOW, I really enjoyed our ‘Chocolate Night’. We really do enjoy a good talk, demo and

samples. It is not difficult to please this WI! It is great that our planners manage to provide such a diverse and varied programme each year. On August 20 we will be enjoying our annual summer meeting. We will NOT be meeting in the hall on this occasion, but instead will meet at the Lamb Inn in Mangotsfield. Weather permitting we hope to enjoy a summer evening walk. Then there will be a quiz in the pub and some food and drinks if people wish. We are aiming for a slightly less formal evening with lots of social thrown in! Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors for the first two visits. We have a broad range of ways to contact us, email mangotsfieldwi@gmail.com to contact the team directly. Our website gives details about meetings and upcoming events for members - www.mangotsfieldwi. org.uk You can also follow us on Twitter @mangotsfieldwi or you can Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ Mangotsfield/

and informative presentation on SS Great Britain’s eventful history along with details of recent developments – now you can climb the rigging or relax in the Dockyard Café bar. Guess which one our ladies will be heading for?! As a fun fundraiser, our charity girl Maureen led us all in a game of Heads and Tails - always a good way to mess up your hair or fear that your backside is getting bigger. Congratulations to our lucky winner who received a £10 voucher to the Bromley Tea Room. We all enjoyed the display of fresh vegetables from our allotment team which our members could acquire for a small donation to our charity - Jessie May. Sadly by the time you read this article Heathfest 2018 will be over but our thanks to everyone who supported our tombola stall – we hope you won a prize. Pat closed the meeting with thanks to Ian and congratulated him on the Trust’s fantastic work. They have not only saved SS Great Britain from the breakers yard but brought her back into the heart of Bristol and its residents where she belongs. We are so proud of your achievement - well done to all concerned. Finally she wished everyone a great summer and reminded us that as we take a break in August we would reconvene on Thursday September 13 to learn about wildlife gardening. BEECHMERE BELLES

BROMLEY HEATH WI DESPITE the sad fact that “football would not be coming home” our members still had our July meeting to look forward to. Ian Gaskin from Bristol’s SS Great Britain Trust was to be our guest speaker for the evening. Most of us had visited her many times and a few vintage members could remember the happy day in 1970 when Brunel’s beauty had “come home” to Bristol much in need of TLC. In Cheryl’s absence, Pat Cottrell kicked off BHWI’s July fixture with a smile – we’d enjoyed our trip to Bletchley Park, a visit to see Concorde was fast approaching, plus our autumn fundraising disco. Ian gave us an entertaining

BEECHMERE Belles have had a busy few months. In April we were so lucky to have two of our own members on hand to share their cake decorating expertise. All our members and visitors went home with beautiful cupcakes, decorated with hand-made roses. May was women’s health month for us, when we welcomed breast cancer care nurses Naomi and Lorraine, who gave an informative talk on selfexamination and their work at Southmead Hospital. In June we had a fascinating talk from Debbie of Bath Harvest Oils, learning about and tasting the rapeseed oil they produce and trying samples of banana bread cake made with their oil. In July we marked one of the WI’s national campaigns to combat loneliness with a talk from the local charity, The Marmalade Trust, which works to raise awareness of and tackle

loneliness across society. We’re looking forward to learning tai chi at our August meeting. Beechmere Belles have a busy social calendar too, with recent trips including a Mexican meal, afternoon tea at Bath races ladies day and several films at the cinema. We meet on the fourth Thursday of each month, at 7.30pm in Emerson’s Green Village Hall. New members are welcome at any point throughout the year, and can visit us for free for a trial evening.

SHORTWOOD VILLAGE W.I. At our June meeting our good friend Carol Coombs from Mangotsfield WI stood in at short notice as the spiritualist had to postpone her visit. Carol is an ambassador for Denman College in Oxfordshire, and she told us the history of Denman. It was bought by the WI for the members to take part in day and short stay courses, covering a huge variety of interests to suit everyone. We were all inspired to visit Denmans in the future. Our next trip to Chavenage House in Tetbury is in July and the details were discussed. Our July meeting saw a visit from a ukulele band called The Wick Strummers. They are made up mainly of WI members who attended a ukulele workshop and then decided to meet up regularly to practice and perform. During the performance Jo told us the history of the ukulele and how to play it. Due to by-election voting our venue was in Shortwood Chapel, which came alive with the rousing sound of ukuleles and us singing along to the likes of “Summer Holiday” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo”. The evening was concluded with hilarious comedy sketches by our own members including The Old Bazaar in Cairo. What a fun evening!! The August meeting is a talk about “Backpacking at 65” and the spiritualist will visit us in September, all being well. We meet on the second Thursday in the month at 7.30 behind the chapel in Shortwood and would welcome new members. Lynne

Sporting Thom named Coach of the Year success MANGOTSFIELD School has seen some spectacular athletics success this summer. Five teams qualified for the Level 3 summer games: Year 7,8,9 Girls and Year 8,9 Boys as did the Year 8 Girls rounders team. They competed against students from South Glos, Banes, North Somerset and Wiltshire and therewere some fantastic individual performances. Lily Bailey won the 300m by 100m; Dani Sinclair won the 1500m by 200m; and Kacey Banks won the shotput. Lily Bailey was selected for the English Schools Athletics meet.

DOWNEND Cricket Club’s Thom Manning has been named Gloucestershire’s Coach of the Year for 2018. Thom won the ECB award for running the county’s biggest All Stars Cricket programme and for his work with cricket development and HIV/AIDS awareness charity Cricket Without Boundaries. Nominating him, Gloucestershire Cricket Board (GCB) community coach Pete Lamb said: "Thom is someone with a real passion for coaching and sharing his love of the game. His positive manner and enthusiasm is infectious and he ensures every new player to the game leaves wanting more.” As lead-activator of Downend’s All Stars programme, Thom has played a part in every aspect of the scheme from promotion and administration to coaching and supporting fellow activators. The club had about 100 children sign up in 2017 and a similar number this year ,making it one of the best attended All Stars sessions in the country. Thom has also helped support the transition of junior members into adult cricket while playing in Downend’s 4th XI. Thom went on his first CWB trip to Cameroon in 2014 and has now been on four projects in total. During those trips teams of volunteers from the UK coach in schools and use cricket as a tool to

Thom in Rwanda

promote HIV/AIDS awareness, gender equality and social cohesion. Thom said: "I was absolutely stunned to win the award, it was a huge surprise. I love cricket, watching, playing but particularly coaching and how a simple set of skills can bring people together and be used to break down social barriers. Whether I am on a CWB project or running an All Stars session at Downend I just try to share my enthusiasm and hope to spark the same passion that I have in others." Thom will receive his award on the pitch during England’s Test match with India at the Ageas Bowl at the end of August when he will be a guest of the ECB.

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

Crepe expectations I AM delighted to say that I am writing this month’s edition sitting in the sunshine, waiting for a wonderful Caesar Salad in my new favourite place! Recently the slightly rundown old pub, ‘The Salutation Inn’ has been fully refurbished and is now called the Grapevine and is a lovely new British food style brasserie. Fortunately for me it is around 10 yards from Cleve Chiropractic in Mangotsfield. It has lots of parking, a sunny beer garden and most importantly great food and drink served by polite and efficient waiters. I regularly pop in for lunch, a drink after work or even just a coffee. Happiness is being well fed and watered in my book! Another interesting twist in the life of family Button is the introduction of a French au pair for two weeks at home called Maëlle. It’s a bit different having somebody live with you but she is a great help with the kids and I have even persuaded her to help water the garden. She can’t make croissants though - I checked - but she can cook a mean crȇpe… After a hard day’s work being ordered around by Molly and Harry I noticed her rubbing her

back between her shoulder blades. I thought that this was the perfect opportunity to try and impress the young French lady with my Chiropractic knowledge so I asked if I could help, only to find out that she suffers with a scoliosis. Scoliosis is not uncommon, I see this condition in the clinic quite regularly and it seems to affect teenage girls the most. It can result in rib crowding causing regular back ache between the shoulders. At their very worst, two metal rods are surgically inserted into the spine with screws to straighten the spine and prevent organs being squashed. Before or after any surgery I have found that a combination of exercises, physio therapy, massage and chiropractic can really help. When scoliosis becomes structural like this it cannot be fully straightened with chiropractic etc but the symptoms of back ache can really be helped. This can have an excellent effect on the patients quality of life which is another reason I get great satisfaction from my job. This month I went on an advanced shockwave course with Keith, our famous physio and head of medical at Bristol Rovers.

It’s true to say that we learned a few new tricks with shockwave and I’m now even treating myself with the powerful machine. It turns out that Shockwave has been found to be affective with certain forms of osteoarthritis. After 15 years of working I have wear and tear in my thumbs and they are starting to ache. After one treatment with shockwave I would say that they feel 30 per cent better and I got some real immediate relief. I have to say that I have been getting worried about wearing my joints out as I have worked an awful lot of hours in my career varying between 50 and 80 hour/week, seeing thousands of patients. Never before have I found a reliable treatment for arthritis in the hands so I can tell you I feel a bit relieved to have find a solution. Incidentally research has all found it useful for osteoarthritis in the medial knee. The head salesman of the shockwave machine just happens to be a Bristol Rovers fan so after the great success with the machine Keith and I persuaded him to lend us another machine to use at Rovers for the players and so far so good. The players love it! We may have to slip him a ticket

or two! Anyway, keep enjoying the hot weather and if you really hate the heat remember that Cleve Chiropractic in Mangotsfield is fully air conditioned, so if you don’t have a treatment booked then please pop in for a cuppa and cool down.
