How the new Lyde Green nursery will look

Nursery: THE long-awaited planning application for a nursery in Lyde Green has finally gone in to South Gloucestershire Council. The nursery should have been built by Easter this year, ready for children to start in September, but now looks likely to be up to a year late. The provider, Happy Days Nurseries, says the facility should be ready “by September 2019 at the latest”. The delays have been caused by concerns over listed buildings

hopes high for Sep 2019 opening nearby and ground levels. A single storey nursery is planned, with 13 car parking spaces, including three for dropoffs, and an outdoor play area. It will have places for 81 children, with two rooms for children aged nought to two and two rooms for three to four-year-olds. The nursery will have its own kitchen so meals can be cooked onsite, and when it’s full they expect to have up to 40 employed staff, with 27 in at any one time. Development director Kevin Higgs said: “All contracts have been exchanged subject to planning, and the planning application was submitted on Friday June 8. At the moment it is going through South Gloucestershire Council’s checks, but we are not expecting a delay between the application being registered and the clock starting to tick. “We’d like to think that during August or September

The site of the proposed nursery this year we will have planning consent in place, and the builder is currently in the process of being formally appointed. The build time is the ultimate question but we would like to think that we will be open by September 2019 at the latest.

“Everyone is delighted to have got to a position where we can start to get on with things, and we’re all really excited to share an update with the local community. As a regional business with three nurseries already in South Gloucestershire,

we’re excited to be involved. We are also looking forward to having the opportunity to get involved in local community events to introduce ourselves to our neighbours soon.” Speaking on behalf of Lyde Green Community Association, Laura O’Brien said: “We’re really pleased to see the nursery progressing and look forward to working closely with them in future. We’ll be looking at the planning application and making any comments we feel are necessary with the aim of making the scheme the best it can be, and would encourage residents and anyone interested to do the same.” Happy Day Nurseries have also confirmed that they will be looking to recruit for staff locally at the start of 2019. ‘I can’t fight for Oliver any m A MOTHER from Emersons Green whose teenage son died at Southmead Hospital has launched a campaign to change the way people with learning disabilities are treated. Paula McGowan has set up a Parliamentary petition calling for all healthcare professionals to be given mandatory training in making adjustments for patients with autism and learning disabilities. Her son Oliver had a bright future ahead of him. After contracting meningitis as a baby he had epilepsy, a mild learning disability and high-functioning autism but had flourished first at Culverhill School in Yate and then at the National Star College in Gloucestershire, where he was taking a BTEC course to become a ski instructor. The 18-year-old was also a registered paralympic athlete with Team Bath and had played football for the England development squad. But a partial seizure in

Oliver McGowan and his mum Paula October 2016 saw Oliver taken to Southmead, starting a chain of events that led to his death 20 days later. After being sedated and restrained, he was given the anti-psychotic drug olanzapine, despite both Oliver and his parents telling doctors he had previously had an adverse

reaction to such medication. The drug caused Oliver’s brain to swell, causing massive, irreparable damage and his life support machine was turned off after doctors told the family there was no hope of recovery. An inquest found his death had been caused by neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a known

more - but I can fight for other people’ side effect of olanzapine. Although the assistant coroner ruled that the drug had been correctly prescribed and the NMS could not have been foreseen, Oliver’s family were very disappointed by the conclusion. They believe Oliver would not have died if their warnings over the medication had been heeded and that he may not even have needed to be restrained or sedated had staff had the training to effectively communicate with someone with autism. Paula, who has worked as a teaching assistant at Blackhorse Primary School, said: “There was no reason for this to have happened. “We were appalled to learn that so many doctors and nurses have never had training on learning and/or autism disability. We firmly believe this is contributing to avoidable deaths and we are not alone in this thinking; many doctors and nurses are supporting Oliver’s

petition. “Oliver was healthy; he was down the gym every night. “Nothing held him back. He never complained and he always saw the good in everyone. “I can’t fight for Oliver anymore but I can fight for other people like Oliver.” As the Voice went to press the number of supporters for Paula’s petition had passed 15,500. A government response is required after 10,000 signatures but Paula was still waiting for one. A spokesman for North Bristol NHS Trust, which runs Southmead Hospital, said: “Oliver’s death was incredibly tragic and was difficult for everyone involved. “As the Coroner concluded, our staff properly prescribed medication in Oliver’s best interests and could not have predicted the side effect he suffered. “However, autism awareness training is very important and this month we are launching

an autism awareness training package for the clinical staff in our Trust.” Learning disability charity Mencap is backing Paula’s campaign. Chief executive Jan Tregelles said almost a quarter of healthcare professionals had never received training on learning disability. She said: “Oliver’s family have been through unimaginable pain, yet continue to fight to improve the healthcare people with a learning disability receive. We urge people to read Oliver’s story and sign their important petition.” Oliver’s death is being investigated as part of the Learning Disabilities Mortality Review Programme, an NHS England project managed by Bristol University looking at inequalities in healthcare. ‘Where are visitors supposed to park?’ PARKING restrictions have come into force in Lyde Green, with some residents expressing concerns. Following several recent sightings of parking wardens along Willowherb Road in Lyde Green, where double yellow lines were painted earlier this year, residents have complained on the Lyde Green Local Facebook page about not being able to park easily outside of their properties. The parking restriction order was published with reasons in Lyde Green between 3/4/17 and 27/4/17, both on site and on South Gloucestershire Council’s consultation website, with the response and decision published on 30/10/17. The double yellow lines were also shown on the planning application drawings (PK13/2372/RM) for the infrastructure works, and the council says that they should have been anticipated by prospective purchasers

Double yellow lines on Willowherb Road along with the on-plot parking provision. Laura Heath, who moved into her home on Willowherb Road with her partner a few months ago, has concerns about visitor parking . She told the Voice: “We

are reasonably lucky in that we have one car and a motorbike so parking for us is no issue. What does concern me is when we have visitors and where we tell them to park. If I was a visitor I’d try and park down the nearest side road. I’m sure that before long, the residents of said side road will complain at the lack of parking for themselves though and it’s then just a vicious cycle as neighbours will fall out with each other. “It’s very frustrating and I’m sure most residents of Willowherb Road feel the same. I understand the encouragements of using public transport and cycling, but both myself and partner need vehicles as it is near impossible getting to our places of work without our own vehicle.” Responding to concerns from residents on Willowherb Road, a spokesman for South Gloucestershire Council said: “The traffic regulation order for

Lyde Green is now in operation and, from week commencing 28 May, our civil enforcement officers have been enforcing the waiting restrictions in place. “The waiting restrictions in Lyde Green are highlighted by markings on the road such as yellow lines and waiting restriction signs where appropriate. This follows national guidance. If there are breaches of these restrictions then this will result in a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) being issued. “The double yellow lines prohibit parking up to the edge of the highway boundary, which in this case is the boundary with the properties. Where there are yellow lines on the road they normally apply to the pavement as well, meaning that any vehicle parking on the footway/cycleway or verge will run the risk of receiving a PCN. Again, this is in line with national legislation/ practice.

n INTRODUCING THE CHAIR OF SGC Keri Beckingham caught up with Emersons Green councillor Rachael Hunt, who is the new Chair of South Gloucestershire Council COUNCILLOR Rachael Hunt was elected to the role of Chair of the Council at South Gloucestershire Council’s annual meeting in May. This is a civic role rather than a political one, and as such she will attend civic events and represent as the first citizen of South Gloucestershire Council. Background Councillor Hunt lives in Emersons Green and has been a councillor for three years, during which time her particular focus has been towards helping local residents with any difficulties they encounter and to connect with the council services and community activities in the area. Dates for the diary Highlights of the role that Councillor Hunt is looking forward to are the Community Awards in early 2019, where there will be a chance to say thank you to local volunteers for the commitment they have shown to South Gloucestershire. In addition, during the first few weeks of her role she will also attend the National Refugee Week big lunch event in Coalpit Heath and the Armed Forces Day celebrations in Thornbury.

Charities Each year the new Chair of Council also chooses the charity or charities that he or she wishes to support. This year, Councillor Hunt has chosen the

National Award winners of the Good Garage Scheme

local domestic abuse charity Next Link and Freewheelers Blood Bikes as the charities she will be supporting. Speaking about her choice of charities, Councillor Hunt said: “I picked Next Link because domestic abuse is an issue that can affect people from all walks of life and this charity does some fantastic work in South Gloucestershire to help support those affected. “Equally, Freewheelers Blood Bikes are a valuable asset to our county, helping important supplies such as blood and breast milk get to our local hospitals. I’m looking forward to working with both charities during my year in office and hope my support will help raise the profile of the invaluable services they provide to people. “I am also looking forward to getting out and about in South Gloucestershire and to meeting people involved in the huge variety of voluntary and charitable activities and events that bring our communities together.” Councillor Hunt is keen to assist both charities and would therefore be very grateful for any support you can give. If you would therefore like to assist in any way or make a donation, further details may be obtained from South Gloucestershire Council’s Member Services by emailing: member. services@southglos.gov.uk or calling: 01454 863019

n NEWS A SCHEME to allow people to use libraries using a smart card is “in danger of hitting the rocks,” it has been claimed. South Gloucestershire Council introduced the Open Access scheme in October last year as it cut staff hours by 30 per cent, to save £500,000 from its library budget. People who have signed up for a smart card can use it to access libraries when there are no staff on site. The council says it means people can access libraries for longer. Downend, Staple Hill and Emersons Green libraries can be accessed by card holders between 8.30am and 7.30pm, seven days per week, even though each library is unstaffed for three days each week. But in the first six months of the scheme just one in every seven eligible library users 3,655 in total - had signed up across the authority area. The council says that numbers are continuing to rise - by the middle of June, 330

9

Library smart card scheme ‘in danger of hitting the rocks’ people had signed up to use Downend as their main library, with 387 registering at Emersons Green and 214 at Staple Hill. But figures for the number of times people have actually visited the libraries outside the reduced staffed opening times are not available. Opposition councillors say they are concerned at the “low level” of take-up for the scheme. The leader of South Gloucestershire’s Labour councillors, Pat Rooney, says the technology can play a part in improving services but should not be used as “a cover to cut the much-valued library staff”. She said the numbers signing up represented around 13 per cent of all eligible library users, adding: “It is surely a false

REGISTERED USERS Downend - 330 Staple Hill - 214 Emersons Green - 387 economy if cost-cutting changes result in very few residents actually using the new service. “The Open Access swipecard system has been in place for several months now, so the low registration levels cannot be casually dismissed as teething problems. Unless the Tories improve the take-up of the scheme, their flagship policy is in danger of hitting the rocks.” But the Conservative-run council’s cabinet member responsible for libraries, Paul

Hughes, said the scheme had been successful and enabled libraries to be open to users for “longer than ever”. He said: “The libraries are still open with our excellent, qualified staff, who can support people with reading, accessing digital services and encouraging children to read through the many activities on offer, but Open Access gives people a choice of service and the ability to use a library when it suits them.” The council says it has been monitoring usage and feedback and plans to extend earlymorning opening to 8am from July. For more information on the Open Access scheme, call 01454 868006.

Bristol Morris Men

SUNSHINE drew the crowds to make this year's Mangotsfield Festival one of the most successful yet. These photos show why the festival attracts thousands of people every year, as young and old alike flocked to Cleve Rugby Club to enjoy entertainment, music, activities and games. The annual event kicked off at 10.30am with its parade from the village green Simon Budd, festival chairman, said: "It all went very well with about 4,000 people turning up. The weather was much

better than was forecast so we were really pleased to have sun all day long. We had plenty of entertainment for children and Beatles and Madness tribute bands in the evening which were well received. All the local community groups had a good day including the new Mangotsfield residents group which had an area in the marquee where they were able to talk about the history of the area." Fewer injured on roads - but death toll rises THE number of people injured on the roads in Downend and the surrounding area has fallen to its lowest level for more than 20 years. But the number of fatalities on South Gloucestershire roads rose to eight last year, from five in 2016. The council says the total casualty figure of 447 was the lowest since the authority was created in 1996. It was down by almost a quarter on the 2016 figure of 571. The number of people seriously injured in 2017 was 34, down from 43 the previous year, while the number of people with less serious injuries was 405, more than 100 fewer than the 523 recorded by police in 2016. Improvements to junctions identified as black spots have helped to drive down the overall casualty figures, says the council. It cites the example of the junction of Bromley Heath Road, Cleeve Hill and Cleeve Wood Road, where the number of

Changes to the traffic lights have led to a reduction in accidents at the Cleeve Hill, Bromley Heath Road and Cleeve Wood Road junction injury accidents fell from five to two in the three years either side of changes made to the traffic lights. Traffic calming and pedestrian crossing improvements on St James Street and Cossham Street in Mangotsfield also cut the number of accidents where someone was

hurt, from nine to three over the same period. The council says its officers continually monitor police reports to identify where people are being injured on its road network. Spending on improvements is targeted at areas where injury accidents occur most often and

involve “vulnerable” road users most likely to be injured in an accident, such as children, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorbike riders. Council cabinet member for transport Colin Hunt said: “It’s great to see that casualty rates have reduced, making South Gloucestershire’s roads some of the safest in the country. “The council takes road safety extremely seriously and we work closely with our partners in the police, with schools and with other agencies to identify where and why road accidents happen and what can be done to prevent them. “However, we cannot afford to become complacent. Eight fatalities is eight fatalities too many, and the council will continue to make every effort to deliver road safety training to raise awareness about this issue.” A council team provides road safety training sessions to thousands of people each year in South Gloucestershire.

Leaders needed for cub pack THE 85th Kingswood Scout Group who meet in their HQ in Quakers Road, Downend, is in need of leaders, particularly for its cub pack. Cubs are aged eight and ten and a half. Leaders must be over 18. Sally Green, from the group, said: “If any Downend Voice reader would be interested in becoming a Cub Scout leader we would be very interested to hear from you. Ideally we would like a person, male or female to undertake training to become a qualified leader. All training is paid for by the Scout Group; much of this is modular and can be completed online. No experience is necessary; however, any person whose work is involved with children may well automatically tick the right boxes for part of the Scout training.” You can contact Sally on 0117 956 2478.

Deal reached for more affordable homes in Lyde

LOCAL housing association Merlin has finalised a contract with national developer Taylor Wimpey for affordable homes at Lyde Green. Merlin is acquiring 34 new homes at Lyde Green, of which 27 will be rented out, with seven available to buy through shared ownership. The homes will be a mixture of two, three, four and five bedroom flats and homes which will be completed in phases over the next three years. Head of development Amanda Swann said: “We’re delighted to be working with Taylor Wimpey once again to bring these new homes to Lyde Green. There’s no shortage of demand for quality, affordable homes across all areas, and by offering a proportion of the homes for shared ownership we’ll also be helping people realise their home ownership dream.

Lucy Carson and Gary Wedge, of Taylor Wimpey, and Amanda Swann, from Merlin, at the construction site in Lyde Green Charlie Joseph, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey Bristol, added: “It’s important that new-build properties are accessible to every buyer on the property ladder and we’re delighted to work with

Merlin to make this so.” Last year Merlin completed 186 new homes, its highest figure to date, but aims to build more than 300 over the next 12 months.

A YOUNGSTER from Downend is taking on the challenging Beacon to Beach run in Minehead in support of his little sister. Daniel, a Year 6 pupil at Staple Hill Primary school, will be attempting the 7 mile run on Sunday July 8 and raising money for the UK Infantile Spasms Trust, a charity started in 2017 by a group of parents including his mum Jenny. His little sister Faith was diagnosed with the rare form of epilepsy in 2015 and at the time no support was available. The charity aims to support families. JEAN and Brian Flynn have celebrated 60 years of marriage after meeting as pen pals in 1955. Brian was born in Cheltenham in 1933 and Jean was born in Bristol in 1937. Jean grew up in Filton and through St Andrew’s Methodist Church, she started writing to Brian who was serving his national service with the Gloucestershire Regiment in Kenya. Jean and Brian wrote to each other for 18 months before Brian travelled from Cheltenham to Filton to visit her at her parents’ house for the first time, and love blossomed. After a nine-month courtship, Brian told Jean that they should go and choose an engagement ring. When the day of the proposal arrived, things didn’t entirely go to plan as Brian’s train arrived at Stapleton Road station instead of Temple Meads, leaving Jean thinking that she had been stood up. As there was no way for them to contact each other in those days, Jean went home and was comforted by her mum, but after getting a bus from the centre of town to Filton, Brian finally arrived and popped the question. The couple decided they would settle in Bristol, with Brian working for a small builder in Bedminster and Jean working at the Co-op’s offices. They got married in 1958 at St Peter’s Church in Filton, and moved to a garden flat in Burlington Road in Redland. For their honeymoon, the newlyweds went to Torquay for

a week, which Jean says was the place to go in those days. They stayed at The Devonshire Hotel, where they met John and Shirley and Pat and Vic, two couples from London who were also on honeymoon. The couples swapped addresses and agreed to

stay in touch. Jean and Brian had two daughters, Caroline and Jacqueline, who were born in 1964 and 1965, and the family moved to Blackhorse Road in Mangotsfield. At the same time, John and Shirley also had two daughters, and they decided to go and live in America where John set up his own company. Over the years the couples used to write each and send Christmas cards, and John and Shirley also travelled back to visit Jean and Brian on several occasions. Jean and Brian lived in

Mangotsfield for 43 years, where their daughters attended Barley Close and Downend schools. Brian started doing exhibition work for Rolls Royce, and Jean had a varied career as a training manager for Tupperware (the first in Bristol and the second in the whole country), the first lady car salesman for Cathedral Cars on Hotwells Road, and she was also the governor of a beauty therapy college. Brian and Jean moved

to their house in Emersons Green in 2004 and all three couples celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries together in Cheltenham in 2008. Unfortunately, Brian was forced to retire after a heart attack at age 60 and was diagnosed with dementia in 2012, and Vic died in 2013. Fast forward to today and in a joint diamond anniversary celebration, John and Shirley travelled from America to have

lunch at Jean and Brian’s house. Speaking about their 60 years of marriage, Jean told the Voice: “On our actual anniversary we went to the Priory Hotel in Bath for dinner with our daughters and our grandsons. In the evening, we had 24 friends and colleagues over to the house We also had a card from the Queen arrive on the day,. “We’ve been very fortunate to be married for as long as we have. We’ve always supported our family and they’ve always supported us. We don’t have rows, if you want to have an argument you just go and talk to yourself for a while! We’ve also had a very sociable life, and we’re very privileged to have good friends and be part of a very happy family.”

n COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION School Square We’ve been working in partnership with Lyde Green Primary School, and the council, to bring urgent improvements to School Square. When the fences came down at Eastertime, the space had no signage, and ineffective barriers for vehicles. This meant that drivers were able to enter the square, but the confusion caused by the lack of signage and markings was posing a risk to the safety of pedestrians, many of them children. At the time of writing we have jointly arrived at a short-term solution to make it safer and are looking at the longerterm management of the square as a community space. Keep a check on our website and Facebook page. You’ll be able to see the latest updates on this, and more.

Summer Sizzler It’s almost Summer Sizzler time – This Saturday 7th from 11am-4pm on Blackwell Common at Bristol & Bath Science Park. The Sizzler will feature a range of activities, music, stalls, food and drink as well as entertainment and children’s activities. We’ll have firm favourite, the dog show from Vets4Pets, as well as some new things, including a craft beer and gin bar! There’s loads to see and do, and it’s FREE to come along! We’re extremely grateful to all

the volunteers who have helped to get this event off the ground again, as well as other individuals and organisations that have supported us in other ways to make this event happen. There’s a lot of organisation involved, but it’s worth it to feel the buzz of excitement in the community when everyone gets together. We hope you’ll be able to join us on the green next to the Science Park to help get the summer off to a sizzling start! See you there – have a fantastic day!

n PETER'S VISION

T

HE well known saying ‘you can’t have your cake and eat it’ is perhaps not something we like to hear. Particularly as I’m a self confessed cake lover - well why not! My dear wife does cook such exquisite delights it would be rude not to eat a slice or two, or three… Now I know that this saying is not actually talking about eating cake (although again that’s a tempting thought) but the fact that we can’t have things both ways, or perhaps that we cannot have the best of both worlds. Well, in the spectacle sense this could be a bit like saying you cannot have a pair of specs that look amazing and fit beautifully. Well can’t you? Often yes, but not always. I’ve had a pair of specs for over a year now - yes, believe it or not I actually don’t change mine every few months! They still fit beautifully and are super comfortable. The style aspect we all take for granted, specs just have to look good on you and make you feel amazing. But how about the fit

and therefore the comfort? Well as our British designed TD collection have such a spectrum of styles, colours and designs there’s surely a spectacle frame here for each of you. Well why compromise? Perhaps to re-phrase the saying ‘you can have your cake and eat it!’ You can choose specs that you’ll love, you’ll feel amazing wearing, look great and they’ll fit you beautifully. While I’m still thinking about cake, a question that comes up quite often is what can I eat to help my eyes & vision? Well, cake is probably not top of this list, unless of course you have a cake containing vitamin C rich ingredients (kiwi, citrus fruits, strawberries), lutein rich foods (kale, leafy vegetables), zinc (chickpeas), and omega-3 (salmon). A better option would be a Jamie Oliver recipe for salmon & roast vegetable couscous (chickpea, leafy greens & squashes) followed by a layered citrus & soft fruit cocktail. I can just see this on our table at the weekend! Mmm, tasty. Of course, now I’ve

mentioned this I will no doubt get the pleasure of cooking as well. No complaints from me though, giving our chief cake baker a break also allows time for creative thoughts to develop which means more cakes to try! So now you have the eye health healthy eating tips you’ll be able to see clearly just how amazing you look in a new pair of TD specs! Library turns into a theatre EMERSONS Green Library will be transformed into a theatre for the Bristol Shakespeare Festival this summer. Librarian Theatre, a Bristolbased company which specialises in turning libraries into temporary theatres for their regional tours, will showcase a brand new 'rapid retelling' of Henry V, Shakespeare's epic take on the Battle of Agincourt. Librarian Theatre works alongside the library sector to deliver accessible and affordable theatre to local communities, whilst promoting public library services, reading and literacy. The company will also perform at Fishponds Library, Bradley Stoke, Junction 3, The Old Library Eastville, Shirehampton, Southmead, Bedminster, Whitchurch, and Bristol Central Library. Though not specifically aimed at children, their shows are all family friendly, and this will be no exception, with several schools also hosting private showings for their students as part of the tour. Their interactive version of Henry V has been adapted to be performed in the round by just two actors, accompanied by an original score from a live musician. The play has been condensed into an hour. To make tickets affordable (prices range from £5-£8), Arts Council England is heavily subsidising the project. The show will visit ten libraries in ten days and will be at Emersons Green Library on Tuesday July 10. Tickets for each are limited and can be purchased online via www.librariantheatre.com or www. bristolshakespearefestival.org.uk

n NEWS The future of health services at the site of Frenchay Hospital is now in the hands of South Gloucestershire Council. The authority will become lead commissioner at the site of the former acute hospital, which means it will take charge of plans to provide joint health and social care facilities there. Up to 55 rehabilitation beds, for patients who are well enough to leave Southmead or another acute hospital, are now planned at Frenchay, along with care home beds and an extra care housing scheme with up to 80 homes. But the announcement does not refer to the Frenchay project as a community hospital: a disappointment for campaigners who have fought for years to see one built. In a statement announcing it was taking the lead of the Frenchay scheme and another at Thornbury, South Gloucestershire Council said the move would enable it to deliver the facilities “as quickly as possible and bring this work to a faster conclusion”.

29

13 years after hospital closure decision, healthcare wait goes on The planned Frenchay facilities would include: • 45 to 55 ‘step-down’ rehabilitation beds, for people who no longer need acute hospital care but need further medical care before returning home. • A share of at least 72 care home beds - the rest would be in Thornbury - including social care beds for dementia nursing. • An extra care housing scheme of between 50 and 80 homes. • Social care facilities for private customers. It is more than four years since acute services closed at Frenchay Hospital and part of the site is now being redeveloped for housing. Campaigners who fought the closure have been pushing for a community hospital since the decision to move acute services was made in 2005.

Save Frenchay Community Hospital Group spokeswoman Barbara Harris said plans for a community hospital with 68 beds at Frenchay were formally approved but scrapped after the 2010 General Election. Mrs Harris said: “The Save Frenchay Community Hospital Group welcomes the decision of South Gloucestershire Council to be the lead commissioner for the healthcare facilities on the Frenchay site. The public is aware that we have been waiting 13 years for a decision on implementation on the Frenchay site and the provision is long overdue. At present, there is little firm detail on the plans for the Frenchay facility. What is absolutely clear is that it will not be the community hospital we were expecting.” Mrs Harris said the group was

concerned over how NHS beds would be differentiated from nursing home beds in the new facility and how much land will be reserved both for the building and car parking. The council will work with North Bristol NHS Trust, which owns the site, and the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, which is in charge of buying healthcare provision in the area. The three organisations have set up a joint team to work on the plans. Council leader Toby Savage said: 0 “This is a welcome step in bringing this sorry and longrunning saga to an end and working together across the NHS and local government to get in place the 21st century health and social care services and facilities that our residents deserve.”

Cover up to keep safe this summer

T

HERE may be clouds in the sky but that doesn’t mean your skin is safe! That’s the message skin experts are hoping to get across as summer approaches and people start shedding their shirts in an attempt to get their annual sun tan. With Sun Awareness week taking place last May 14 to 20, dermatologists are taking the opportunity to highlight the dangers of spending too much time in the sun. And they are keen to point out that it doesn’t have to be ‘a scorcher’ before people should start taking protective action. “When the sun is blasting down everyone should know the drill by now,” explained Dr Shalini Narayan a consultant dermatologist at Spire Bristol Hospital. “The danger is when there is cloud cover or a breeze that is making everything appear cooler. Clouds reduce the amount of ultraviolet A and B radiation that reaches the earth's surface and our skin, but don’t stop the damaging rays. Clouds block more visible light than ultraviolet radiation,” he explained. “Admittedly there will be ‘summer days’ when it is pouring it down with rain and the

approximately 2,500 people deaths. Dr Narayan added: “In the case of young children if it is warm enough for them to be playing out in shorts and tee shirts then the sun is usually strong enough to merit covering them in a protective cream or lotion. “I would also advise that, particularly between 11am and 3pm when the sun rays are at their strongest, you actually put kids in long sleeved tee-shirts and light, long trousers. “It is always better to be safe than sorry and my advice would be that if you are outdoors in summer take care. Just because you can’t feel the burn doesn’t mean you aren’t burning!”

Top tips for looking after your skin in the sun clouds are so thick and grey that your umbrella and raincoat should give all the cover you need but, basically, if the sun is shining then your skin is in danger.” Government figures show skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK and rates continue to rise with at least 100,000 new cases diagnosed each year resulting in

n TRAVEL

Visiting ‘the city that never sleeps’

NEW York City seems to always wind its way onto bucket lists, and having ventured there earlier this year with my fiancé, it’s easy to understand why. This month, I’d like to share a few thoughts on visiting NYC for the first time. For us, New York was a spontaneous trip as we’d spotted some great flight deals via the mailing list, Scott’s Cheap Flights. And it’s a trip I’m glad we took the time to do. On our first day, we jumped at the chance to wander through Central Park, which saw us find Bethesda Terrace and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When walking beneath Bethesda Terrace, we looked up and were amazed by the art deco tiled ceiling! As for the MET, we knew it was a very large museum and impossible to see in one day, so we scouted out the exhibits we were most interested in seeing. My top recommendations are the Egyptian and Asian exhibits. Over the next couple of days, we walked the length of Brooklyn Bridge and found a talented local artist selling prints for as little as $10, we took the free Staten Island Ferry in order to catch a closer glimpse of The Statue of Liberty, we paid our respects at the 9/11 Memorial, and ventured to the ‘Top

White roses at the 9_11 Memorial

of the Rock’ in order to see the city lights from above. The 9/11 Memorial was a very humbling experience. When we visited, the rain was pouring down, and we spotted single white roses next to some of the names. We later found out that these are placed there to signify a victim’s birthday. When there, we completely forgot our surroundings, tuned out the noises of traffic and sirens, and simply spent a few minutes deep in thought. Following that, we felt like we needed to spend a bit of time seeing New York’s “lighter” side, by which I mean the bright lights of Times Square and the Gulliver’s Gate museum, which allowed us to “travel the world in one day” via its

miniature models. We walked the length of the High Line within these few days as well. If you’ve not heard of it, it’s basically an old railway that was used to transport goods throughout the city, but it’s now a charming public park suspended 30 feet off the ground. It was at the end of this walkway that we spotted the most incredible New York sunset, silhouetting the skyline and reflecting everything in the Hudson River. It seems strange to think that a city that is so busy, so famed for being ‘the city that never sleeps’, is

one that can offer lots of moments of quiet contemplation and space to think. So if there’s just one thing I can takeaway from this trip, it would be this: New York City might be ‘the city that never sleeps’, yet it is also ‘the city that keeps you thinking’. n AROUND THE WIs DOWNEND WI MAY'S meeting was all about mental health and relaxation. The National Federation has a resolution each year to campaign on a national level about a different topic. This year’s resolution was for “Mental Health Matters” - members vote for or against their support and this then goes to the annual general meeting, which was held in Cardiff on the June 6. Our members voted overwhelmingly to support this resolution and so did all the WI’s across the country. So in coming months look out for publicity regarding this. Following this we had a session on relaxation and Mindcalm by Melanie Gillespie, who talked through the body’s reaction to stress and techniques to counteract this. To put this into practice we had a session led down with pillows and blankets to relax and de-stress us all. We all went away a little more sleepy that when we started! Our June 26 session will be an interactive drumming session, led by one of our lovely members Pippa, so we will await and see how tuneful we can become.

As the school summer holidays are fast approaching we will also be taking donations for the foodbank that Christchurch collect, so if you come along as a member or guest, please bring some dried/ tinned goods with you. We meet at 7:30pm in Christchurch Hall, North Road on the last Tuesday of the month, for a small donation you can have tea, coffee and cake together with a raffle to win some lovely prizes. So if you want to know what we are about, please join us either as a guest or a paid up member. If you would like more information feel free to contact me by email at downendwi@yahoo. co.uk

BROMLEY HEATH WI

MANGOTSFIELD WI IN June we celebrated our birthday, our 42nd birthday to be precise. We are very lucky to have such a great committee who put on such fabulous events. The room was beautifully decorated and the refreshments and cream tea were divine. A big thank you to everyone who made the night possible and the string quartet were superb. I'm looking forward to July 23 for our next meeting. I can’t wait, it's chocolate night! A whole night dedicated to chocolate. There will be a talk about chocolate, a demo and hopefully lots of samples of chocolate. Did I mention it's chocolate night? The Manor Cup (the prize for an house competition) will be awarded to the best chocolate creation. I was speaking to a lovely young lady recently who was thinking of coming along in July with her mum (Stacey – you know who you are). I do hope she reads this and decides to come, we a have a couple of mother daughter pairings. We have many ladies who come with friends but we also have a large number of ladies who came as an individual initially. These individual ladies are now part of Mangotsfield WI and they have more than 60 friends with whom they can choose to sit with or attend outings with. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge our visitors for the first two visits. We have a broad range of ways to contact us including emailing the team directly mangotsfieldwi@gmail.com Our website gives details about meetings and upcoming events for members - www.mangotsfieldwi. org.uk You can also follow us on Twitter @mangotsfieldwi or you can Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ Mangotsfield/

THURSDAY June 14 was a beautiful evening and our members strolled in smiling, chatting and looking glamorous in their summer attire. Many of them had brought donations for Foodbank as well as prizes for our Heathfest tombola. Cheryl welcomed new and existing members and promptly dealt with the formal announcements. She mentioned trips including our “back stage” visit to Waitrose Chipping Sodbury the tickets for which sold out quicker than Ed Sheeran’s!! Next we listened to our inspirational speaker - Dr Tracy Johnson of Brainbox Fitness. Tracy had been a clever but not particularly “sporty” child and her school’s career system had channelled her into a successful and initially rewarding academic career. As years went by her work became more stressful, less rewarding and a sedentary lifestyle made her feel unhealthy and lack lustre. Many people recognise this scenario but how many have the desire, drive and determination to

make a complete lifestyle change? Well Tracy did. She now enjoys working as a Lifestyle coach, is training for a Triathlon and is a picture of health. Her message: Nobody enjoys drastic crash diets, unappetising food or unpleasant exercise. Eating a healthy balanced diet, controlling portion sizes and undertaking regular and enjoyable exercise will have a positive and long lasting effect on your physical and mental wellbeing. “A little of what you fancy does you good”. On Saturday July 14 our Tremendous Tombola Team will be running a stall at Heathfest in aid of The Jessie May Trust. Loads of lovely prizes are waiting to be won from both our Adult and Children’s tombola. Please come over for a chat and spend a “few quid” to support a deserving cause and maybe win a prize? Our tombola team look forward to meeting you. Don’t miss the Heathfest performance of Bromley Heath WI Community Choir live on stage from 2.20pm – 2.40pm. They get my “Golden Buzzer” every time. On July 12 we will be learning more about ss Great Britain. Margaret Hanwell

surrounding areas. Administrator Theresa van der Merwe said: "We have a number of groups around the UK who have successfully raised thousands of pounds for the charity over the years. We need at least six to 10 people to set up a successful card making group. "We sell all cards for £1 each which goes a long way to cover the cost of 85p to keep a child at a Goodwill Home for one day. We rely on the supply of used greeting cards and, of course, their sale when re-made. "The children we work with come from very poor backgrounds and are often orphaned at a young age. Many have no one to look after them and the support provided by Goodwill allows them the opportunity for a brighter future. "If you like the idea of using greeting cards to make money for orphan children and can persuade companies to donate paper, card, glue and envelopes, then this group is for you. "This is an opportunity to meet local like-minded people for a chat, coffee and card making session. It's great fun and you will be so pleased with what you will achieve." No experience is needed as training and mentoring to kick start the group will be provided. The group will meet once a week in the morning for two hours. Waterproof Smartphone Case

Project is honoured

With Liz Freke of Hattie’s Hoorays 6. Either machine or hand stitch the sides of the phone case in place. Neaten off all thread edges.

With summer here it’s almost time to start thinking about those beach bag essentials! Why not create your own waterproof case to keep your smartphone safe from water damage - you can even accessorise it to the colour of your swimwear! You will need: Small piece of oilcloth (approximately 50cms x 20cms) Contrasting colour thread Sewing machine/sewing needle Scissors Pen/pencil Ruler

1. Measure the length of your smartphone. Double this figure and add 10 - this will give you the length of oilcloth needed - make a note of this length. Now measure the width of your smartphone and add 4. You can now draw and cut out this rectangular shape from your oilcloth.

3. Place the smartphone on your oilcloth and fold the fabric up over the smartphone so that the front piece of fabric covers the phone, make a mark where the fold is on the oilcloth as this will be your fold line.

4. Fold the fabric at this point and pin in place, with right sides of fabric together.

7. Now turn right side out - your waterproof phone case is ready to use! Once your phone is inside, slip the top flap underneath the little flap to secure in place - you could even use your phone case as a handy place to store holiday money! Have fun creating and happy holidays!

VOLUNTEERS have received royal recognition for helping families with babies. The Barnardo’s South Gloucestershire Breastfeeding Peer Support Project will receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2018 – the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK, and described as the equivalent of an MBE. The project has up to 40 trained volunteer ‘peer supporters’ who help mothers. Weekly groups are held at children’s centres, schools, and hospitals Kingswood, Downend, Cadbury Heath, Yate, Patchway, Thornbury and Bradley Stoke. More than 400 families use the service every year, and more than 1,000 mothers have been helped since it was first commissioned by South Gloucestershire Council in 2011. More than 2,000 hours were volunteered last year alone.

2. Take one end and at each corner, measure 4cms down and 2cms across. Draw a line between these points and trim along these lines - this has snipped off the corners.

5. Now cut another piece of oilcloth, the same width as the larger piece and 2cms high, this will be a strap to secure the flap of your phone case. You may need to remove a couple of the side pins to position this - place the piece you have just cut onto what will be the front of the oilcloth, approximately 2cms down from the top edge. SportsPound takes over A GROUP of couch-to-5k runners have graduated from the SportsPound project by running a parkrun at Pomphrey Hill. SportsPound is a South Gloucestershire Council and Sport England funded project aiming to get 3,000 people more active by providing eight activity sessions free of charge. As part of this, couch-to-5k courses are designed to help inexperienced runners improve their fitness and build up from running for 60 seconds in week one, to running continuously for 30 minutes by week nine. The 'SportsPound parkrun takeover' took place at Pomphrey Hill Playing Fields in Mangotsfield on Saturday June 9 at 9am. Councillor Rachael Hunt, Chair of South Gloucestershire Council was in attendance at the event, and said: “The event was the second anniversary of our first SportsPound couch-to-5K graduation, with over forty SportsPound graduates volunteering as marshals, timekeepers, other officials and run director on the day. There was a superb attendance with 435 runners taking part and ages spanning from six to 66, some with pushchairs and even some running with their dogs. A number of runners also achieved parkrun landmarks that day,. Adrian Grimshaw, run director, said: “There is a great synergy between parkrun and SportsPound, in trying to promote an active lifestyle - especially to those who find it the hardest. Whatever circumstances may form a barrier to participation, both organisations look to break those down and encourage everyone.” To find out more, visit www.southglos.gov.uk/sportspound

Camping and Danny Dyer

S

o May/June has been fantastic so far. The Button family has had our annual summer holiday down to the south of France with Nanny and Grandad Button early to take advantage of the last holiday out of high season for years, as Molly starts school in September. My parents may be well into their 60s and 70s but they are full of life and love a good holiday! We stayed in a villa on a campsite in Ramatuelle. Mum and Dad still do enjoy a good camping trip which is great as I have just bought a wonderful trailer tent, second hand, from wonderful patients for next summer. I love camping and I’m trying to slowly convince Jenny and the kids that they do too, so I thought a trailer tent was a good start…and if they like it after a few years then maybe I can invest into my dream campervan. Don’t get me wrong I love a nice hotel like the next person but I grew up camping with my Mum, Dad and brother and it taught me untold lessons growing up and I would like to pass that on to Molly and Harry…and Jenny. Speaking of how well Mum and Dad are getting on, over the last year my seventy something Dad

broke down with low back pain on a cruise. Low back pain is not something he has suffered with before and I haven’t treated him for it. However when he came in, he could barely walk with the pain and I recognised it as a pretty serious case of biomechanical back pain and I took an X-ray in the clinic straight away. We have a great digital X-ray machine that gives me results instantly (the benefits of having a chiropractor as a son!). Sure enough his lumbar spine was starting to twist. The X-rays are so useful when treating a condition like this. On the surface the twist is barely visible but on the X-ray it is really clear. This helps me when treating the spine to make sure that all of the gentle manipulation is in exactly the right direction. To be clear, without putting metal rods into the spine (something most people would prefer to avoid) we cannot make the spine perfectly straight again but we can restore function to a point where the patient is mainly out of pain and their quality of life is restored. Indeed after a few months work with Dad, working alongside the sports therapist, I managed to not just get him out of pain but back playing competitive squash again

for Colston’s Squash Club. So there is life in the old dog yet and he can still come on holiday with us to help chase the toddlers in and out of the sea, so you can ascertain that my motivations were not entirely selfless. Without wishing to tempt fate, Mum will be jealous that I have a talked about Dad so much this month so no doubt she will pop in with something for me to treat soon. So touch wood, hey mum?! Before I went away on holiday I managed to sneak in some voluntary sports work in aid of ‘Run Ronnie Run’. Ronnie is a three year old boy with Cerebral Palsy (CP). I have a lot of time to help people with CP and a lot of experience working with disabled athletes with CP from working with the GB Paralympic athletes to working at the CP world games for England. Ronnie however is my cousin’s son so I jumped at the opportunity to help raise money for him to have an operation to help him walk more easily. My cousin’s side of the family are all from Herts and Essex and are mad West Ham fans so they put on a charity football match at Bishops Stortford Football Club who played a celebrity side that included Danny Dyer,

half of the EastEnders cast and a load of people from a programme called Towie…I had no idea! Before the game and at half time I had to help Danny Dyer a bit and each time after I treated him I also had the honour of lighting his cigarette before he had to ‘get out there and play’. Life doesn’t get any more A-list that that for me!
