It’s just not good enough! Petition calls for improvements at play park RESIDENTS have launched a petition demanding improvements to the children’s play park in Lyde Green. Concerns have been raised about the quality of the park, off Howsmoor Lane and Forgetmenot Way, since it was finished in July 2017. Now the Lyde Green Open Space group and a group of residents are calling on South Gloucestershire Council and Green Square Estates to invest in new, safer surfacing, install better fencing, gates, and lighting, reassess drainage and improve the play equipment. In support of the petition, Lyde Green residents and volunteers Lea Korologou Linden and Renée Blackwood organised a Park Action Day event on Wednesday May 16 to encourage residents to come along, talk about their experiences and the issues at the park and give their signature. As well as a group of

From Page 1 spokesman for South Gloucestershire Council said: “As previously mentioned, our community spaces team inspected the play area in July last year and signed off the landscaping as being acceptable from the developer (Emersons Green Urban Village Ltd). Following this, the management company (GreenSquare) has taken over full responsibility for the site.” A spokesman for GreenSquare Estates said: “I recently attended site to inspect the play area and spoke with the consortium of developers with whom we have some outstanding associated works. “With the exception of two particular areas which I will go on to discuss in a

moment, I felt the play area was in a good state and is fit for purpose. I would also add that we have routine safety inspections of the play areas and there are currently no outstanding points that require remedial work. “As you may know, there is one particular piece of equipment (the swing roundabout) which has suffered waterlogging around its matting base. We flagged this up to the consortium of developers prior to handover to us as something that a) needs replacing and b) needs a suitable longer term solution. Having spoken with them I can confirm that they are due to install land drainage from this piece of equipment to the brook, and works are due to start on this in the coming few weeks. “Works are also due to start to connect

can visit, be involved with, play for and hopefully support - it’s the start of a new chapter.” The club has already had lots of interest from Lyde Green residents before a ball has even been kicked on the new site, including Craig Pellow who has set up a veterans’ team that play matches on Sundays and will be playing at Howsmoor Lane from next season. Community club manager

Fundraisers' dismay as vital defibrillator is stolen LIVES have been put at risk after a machine to revive cardiac arrest victims vanished from Mangotsfield. Police suspect that the lifesaving defibrillator has been stolen, leaving organisers of a £3,000 fundraising campaign to buy it “gutted”. The machine was kept in a locked metal cabinet on the side of the Grapevine Brasserie in St James Place, Mangotsfield, ready for use in an emergency. Charnfield Neighbourhood Watch committee member Julie Oliver found the defibrillator was missing when she went to do a regular check-up on May 14. Ambulance service operators have a code which can be used to unlock the cabinet. Neighbourhood watch joint chairman Sue Jefferies has been told that the code was given out

at around noon on May 8, to someone apparently calling from Bath police station and claiming to be a police officer who needed to use the machine. But the police have no record of an officer using the defibrillator - and no ambulance was sent to the scene. Now Avon and Somerset police say they suspect the machine was stolen and are appealing for anyone with information to call them. Sue said: “We’re absolutely gutted. It took us quite a long time to raise the money. We did all sorts of fundraising for it and now some moron has decided to steal it. The police think they probably stripped it out to take the parts. “At first we thought it might have been used but we can’t trace anything.

“It was there to serve the community and save a life if needed, and it can’t do that now.” Sue hopes CCTV in the area has captured the disappearance of the defibrillator on video. Mangotsfield School pupils, Mangotsfield Festival organisers, 67th Mangotsfield Scouts, Emersons Green Town Council and Chipping Sodbury Lions were among the groups which helped the neighbourhood watch raise the £3,000 to buy the defibrillator. After it was installed last year, training sessions were held so that local shopkeepers knew how to use it in an emergency. South Gloucestershire Rodway ward Labour councillor Michael Bell said: “We’re just astounded anyone could do this. We want to make Mangotsfield

Tip traffic traps us in our homes, say residents PEOPLE living near the Mangotsfield recycling centre say traffic queuing to enter the tip keeps them stuck on their estate for hours at a time. Roads around the Carsons Road Sort It centre are regularly jammed, both with people in cars waiting for a place and recycling lorries queuing to unload. Demands for action were made at the South Gloucestershire Council meeting on May 16, where a 173-signature petition calling for action was handed in. Stewart Hadley-Clarke, who lives on the Siston Hill estate nearby, shared pictures of the queuing traffic with the Downend Voice after telling councillors the surrounding roads could no longer cope. He told the council: “There have been occasions where residents have been stuck in the estate and couldn’t move for up to four or five hours. They are not isolated incidents. The reduction in size of black bins

from 240 to 140 litres seems to have added to the problem. Previously I have only ever needed to go to the tip two or three times a year. Now I have to go to the recycling centre every other week, as I’m sure other council residents have as well. have witnessed fly-tipping, road rage and near-misses as a result of the way the site is managed.” Presenting the petition, Siston ward Conservative councillor Ian Adams said: “It’s not just a seasonal thing, it’s happening during the week when we have the recycling centre

lorries queuing up trying to access the weighbridge at about 2.30 most weekdays, which coincides with the school pickup. At weekends residents are trying to access the site as well as trying to access their homes, in a queue which stretches down to the ring road.” Mr Adams said a slip road was needed to take tip traffic off the road and a number plate recognition machine checking that cars were registered needed to be moved, as it currently scans vehicles only when they are already on the site.

National Award winners of the Good Garage Scheme

Rodway ward Labour councillor Michael Bell said a webcam designed to show people how long queues were at the centre had not been working for two years. Cabinet member for communities Paul Hughes said: “The Mangotsfield Sort It centre has experienced a number of busy periods recently and we apologise for any traffic disruption. We are working to reduce the issues of queuing and are encouraging residents to make use of the other three sites when Mangotsfield is busy. Mr Hughes said extra parking had been installed last year and the council was working with contractor Suez to get the webcams working. He added: “There is no evidence that the introduction of smaller bins is contributing to the queues at Mangotsfield. There has not been any significant increase in black bag waste being deposited at the Sort It Centres. ”

New head of Lyde Green Primary gets to work THE new permanent headteacher of Lyde Green Primary School has told Emersons Green Voice that he is looking forward to developing a school for the benefit of children, parents, and the local community. Mark Jackson has been in his role since April 9, having taken over the position from interim headteacher Wendy Westwood, who is staying on at the school as deputy head. Mr Jackson taught at the former Hareclive Primary in Hartcliffe for eight years, where he worked as a Year 6 teacher and deputy head, before leaving to work as a teaching and learning adviser for CAT (Collaborative Academies Trust) in 2013, where he also worked as the head of a school in Somerset for three years. Speaking about his new role and what he hopes to achieve, Mr Jackson told Emersons Green Voice: “I’m very lucky to have a full time deputy, and Wendy and I are a great team. “We have a blank canvas here, a chance to grow with the community around us. We also want the school to be known for reading, and part of our plan involves creating a library in our mezzanine in order to encourage a love of reading among our pupils. The first thing that I noticed when I came here was how well behaved and articulate the pupils were – they are very eager to learn.” Mr Jackson said the school had recently introduced a new curriculum at the school which recognises that children need to learn how to think and develop the best learning process for them. It will teach them how to work well in a team, instil independence, help them to think creatively and critically and develop empathy. Since Mr Jackson has been in post, the School Square

area to the front of the school has opened after a long delay, meaning that staff, parents, pupils and visitors are able to access the building from the front entrance. However, bollards remain in place which means that parents are still unable to park outside. Mr Jackson said: “It’s lovely to be able to access the school from the front entrance now, and we now feel much more welcoming - I have really enjoyed meeting parents at the gate in the morning. “I want residents and parents to know that we have no jurisdiction over the access to School Square, but we are doing our best to speed things up and sort things out. Now that it has been adopted by the council, we are going to meet with the various local groups to talk about the importance of getting signage and a system for vehicular access in place, and we are looking forward to making use of the space for events with the local community once it is fully open.” A highlight of Mr Jackson’s first month in post has been the election of the first Lyde Green School Council, which allows the pupils to have their voices heard and suggest how they would like to make their school a better place. As part of this, local MP Chris Skidmore visited the school to talk to pupils about his work and also give elected members their School Council badges. “It has been really great to see how seriously the pupils have taken their School Council responsibilities. They are very passionate about getting involved and making a difference, and see it as much more than just a badge which is fantastic,” Mr Jackson said. He is also keen for the community to get involved with the school and is looking at setting up an entitlement

Council sees a 'changing of the guard' SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has a new leader, after a change at the top of the ruling Conservative group. Toby Savage has stepped up from being deputy leader of the council and Tory group to take over from Matthew Riddle. Longwell Green ward councillor Mr Savage, 35, will continue to hold the cabinet portfolio for schools, skills and employment, alongside overall leadership of the authority. Mr Riddle, who represents Severn ward, told the council’s annual meeting: “It’s time to move on and make way for someone new.” Mr Savage said: “It’s a great honour to be elected as council leader and I am looking forward to leading the authority through the challenges which lie ahead. “I’d also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Matthew’s leadership over these past few years and thank him for

Rachael Hunt

Toby Savage the dedication and commitment he has shown in carrying out this role.” Downend ward councillor Jon Hunt has been elected deputy leader of the council. He also holds the cabinet portfolio for children and young people. There were two other changes to the ruling cabinet, with

Chipping Sodbury councillor Rob Creer taking charge of corporate resources, replacing John Goddard, and Oldland Common councillor Paul Hughes appointed as member for communities and tourism, replacing Heather Goddard. The annual meeting on Wednesday, May 16 also saw

a new Chairman and Vice Chairman of the council elected for the coming year. The position represents the ceremonial leadership of the council, equivalent to Bristol’s Lord Mayor. Emersons Green Conservative councillor Rachael Hunt was elected to serve as Chairman and named two charities she will be supporting during her year in office: domestic abuse charity Next Link and Freewheelers Blood Bikes, which provides a free out-of-hours motorcycle courier service to hospitals in the South West of England. Stoke Gifford Tory councillor Brian Allinson was elected to serve as Vice Chairman. Outgoing Chairman Ian Blair, a Liberal Democrat councillor for Yate North, raised just over £1,630, to be divided between his two chosen charities, Borderlands and Off the Record, during his year in office.

n NEWS AN unexplained smell thought to be coming from a landfill site is causing concern among the residents of Lyde Green. The smell, which is described as having an egg or sulphur odour, is thought to be coming from the Shortwood Quarry site on Cattybrook Road. It is reported to be most commonly experienced early in the morning and during the evening, and sometimes it only lingers for a short period of time. Robert Howard has lived in Lyde Green since December 2014 with his wife and two-year-old son, told the Voice: “The smell has only become an issue in the last six months or so, but is getting to the point that it will wake you up in the middle of the night. “It only seems to be present at certain times, but when it is it's truly awful. I think the authorities have a responsibility to consult with local communities when sites like the landfill at Shortwood become operational.” Mr Howard sought views of residents via Facebook, where residents reported that the smell has caused headaches and made them feel sick, and that even with their windows shut they can still smell it inside their houses. Helen Masey, who has lived in Lyde Green with her partner since December 2014, said: “It’s such a shame, as ‘the smell’ is the only downside to living in Lyde Green. We all hope it gets resolved as soon as possible!” A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: “We have received some complaints about an odour and these have been referred to the Environment Agency as they are the regulatory body who would be responsible for any further

11

What’s that smell? Call for action over evening odour

investigation into this matter.” An Environment Agency said: “The landfill at Shortwood Quarry is an operational nonhazardous waste landfill and has an environmental permit, issued by the Environment Agency, for the disposal of non-hazardous waste. “The Environment Agency has received a number of reports of odour from the landfill and officers have visited the site in and out of office hours. To date the Environment Agency has not traced the source of the odour, but is continuing to investigate. “The operator Enovert South Limited has been made aware of the complaints. The operator has work planned over the next few weeks to extend the current landfill gas collection system and the Environment Agency will be monitoring the work.” Commenting on behalf of Enovert, managing director Alistair Holl said: “Landfill

sites generate landfill gas, and at Enovert we harness this gas in order to generate electricity from a renewable source. We put significant resource into extracting gas in order to counteract odour problems and whilst we have recently received a few complaints regarding

possible odours coming from the Shortwood landfill site, our investigations have shown that there are no changes and no alterations to our extraction system. “If any members of our local community feel at any time that there is an odour, then the sooner we hear the details, then the sooner we can investigate the matter fully. June, 2018

n NEWS THE first South Gloucestershire Food and Drink Festival has been declared a stunning success after more than 20,000 people attended the event in Emersons Green. Over 100 exhibitors of food drink and crafts benefited from the sunny weather at the Bristol and Bath Science Park with 4,000 people attended the VIP preview night for local businesses and residents alone. Metrobus was on hand to show its new bus and was handing out timetables. The Science Park is one of the stops on the new service. Local bands Rock Choir, The Bad Dads & Richard Friend kept the crowds entertained and the royal wedding was screened live on the Saturday. Sarah Williams, one of the organisers said: “We wanted to encourage the community to come together to enjoy great weekend. We were really pleased with the number of people who came to the event and we’re already planning next year’s event”.

n NEWS

Here comes the Metrobus

Ken McCormick joins the VIPs on the maiden voyage of the long-awaited new service from Emersons Green IT has cost £230 million and been 12 years in the making - now the first Metrobus has finally taken to the road. The m3 route from Emersons Green to Bristol city centre uses a combination of main roads, bus lanes, bus-only routes and prepaid tickets to promise a faster, more reliable service. But will the new route be a better way to travel for people living in Downend, Staple Hill, Mangotsfield and Emersons Green? Downend Voice took a ride on the inaugural journey to see how it shapes up against the X48 - which will be stopped when the m3 starts scheduled services on May 29 - as well as the 48 and 49. The maiden Metrobus voyage had the atmosphere of a

school trip, as a group of invited politicians, business leaders and journalists travelled the route on one of the new £10 million fleet, with James Freeman, the managing director of operator First West of England, acting as

But the route is far more convenient for people living or working near the Avon Ring Road than for anyone living near the middle of Downend, for example. Starting near Sainsbury’s at Emersons Green, it stops at Lyde Green Park & Ride, the Bristol & Bath Science Park, on the A4174 near the Beefeater and Willy Wicket pubs, then near the Hambrook traffic lights before crossing the M32 and heading towards UWE. From there it stops at Stoke Park and Begbrook, before using the new bus-only interchange to join the M32 and stopping at Cabot Circus, Broadmead and the Centre. The inaugural journey, made during light, mid-morning traffic, took 34 minutes from Emersons

host. The buses themselves are brand new, comfortable, have USB ports on seat backs to charge your smartphone and speakers for stop announcements.

s - at last The new buses have USB points on the seat backs to charge mobile devices Green to the Centre the same amount of time the X48 is timetabled to take between the same two places at the same time of day. It is a good 15 minutes quicker than the 48 and 49 from Emersons Green - but the journey times for the 48 from the Horseshoe and the 49 from Hill House Road are similar. The leg from Hambrook to the M32 via UWE adds about nine minutes to the Metrobus journey. But stopping at the university will be key to the route’s success, as it will offer students a 15-minute journey to and from the Centre. The easier connections to growing employment areas such as the science park are also being welcomed by business leaders. Asked about the possibility of connecting other services to Metrobus to allow people who don’t live near a stop to use it, Mr Freeman said First was “waiting to see what develops” after the m3 starts to run. He said: “It’s a bus-based system so we can do anything.” Anyone who wants to try Metrobus out can ride on the m3 free of charge between May 29 and June 9. After that, fares will cost between £1.50 for a onezone single to £4 for an all-day, all-zone ticket.

Tickets must be bought in advance, either using First’s mobile m-ticket app, a smartcard or at new iPoint machines at Metrobus stops. Existing First paper tickets from Paypoint shops, Avonfare tickets and concessionary passes can also be used. Mr Freeman said: “Metrobus combines low emissions, new customer-facing technologies and infrastructure on a massive scale. It will revolutionise public transport with faster journeys and a much higher standard in passenger experience.” The m2 route from Long Ashton to the city centre is due to start in the autumn, with the m1 from Cribbs Causeway to Hengrove Park following in early 2019.

Dignitaries at the Metrobus launch at the Bristol and Bath Science Park in Emersons Green, above, travelled to the city centre, entering the M32 via the new bus only junction, below left

Lyde Green goes wild for bats RESIDENTS had the chance to get up close to one of nature’s most mysterious creatures during a recent wildlife walk. Led by Bristol naturalist and conservationalist Steve England, the free bat hunt took place along the Dramway footpath during the evening of Saturday May 5. Setting off from the Lyde Green park and ride car park, the group of 15 adults and four children explored the fields near Lyde Green, with Steve taking the opportunity to educate them about foraging as they went. Examples of wild foods that the group found during the walk included wild peas, pignut, common sorrel (which tasted like apple peel), hedge mustard and wild garlic. Steve gave the youngest members of the group the chance to identify the skulls of

a badger, roe deer and fox that he had brought with him. He then explained about the most common bats that the group were likely to see after the sun had set – the noctule and the common pipistrelle, the largest and smallest bats in Britain, capable of hunting up to 3000 insects in one night. During the three-hour walk, the group had the opportunity to spot rabbits, a female roe deer, and several noctule and common pipistrelle bats using the special detectors that Steve said: “This is a great place to live as there’s so much to see here – there’s so much wildlife.” South Gloucestershire Cabinet Councillor Colin Hunt, said: “Events such as the bat walk with Steve England are great community builders, as they get everyone together and

n NEWS AN aspiring racing driver from Emersons Green has set his sights on winning the 2018 Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship. Matt Parr, who works as a mechanic for Dick Lovett in Cribbs Causeway, started racing two-stroke go-karts when he was 18. After four years, he then moved into sprint racing, where the aim is to drive a road car around a track or circuit in the quickest time possible. In 2017, Matt was offered the chance to do a test in a race car by Grant Motorsport, who are based in Warmley. Following this, he joined the team and was then entered into the 2018 Saloon Car Championship at Castle Combe circuit, which is based on four classes from A to D (depending on the power of the vehicle). Matt races in a specially modified Citroen Saxo in class D, which he pays to rent and have maintained for him by the team. After testing in February and March, he was then put through to race twice in April and May,

It’s full speed ahead for Matt

where he finished second and first in class D, and also achieved the fastest overall lap time in both races. Speaking of the championship and his ambitions, Matt said: “The final of the championship

is on September 15, and each month leading up to then I will race at Castle Combe to try and pick up more points. At the moment I am second overall in the championship and lead in class D, and if I can get enough

points to win class D, or even the championship, that would be amazing. “My aim is to progress into one of the other classes of the championship for next year. I’m really competitive, and I love the driving and the build up to each race. It’s a lot of fun, and cars and motorsport are big hobbies of mine.” Matt says his goal for next five years is to get to the Clio Cup for Renault Clios, and would also like to have more sponsors. In addition, his long-term dream is to enter the British Touring Cars Championship, which is the biggest saloon car competition in the country. n MOTOR RACING WITH ANDY LAURENCE ROUND 3 of the Vincenzo & Sons Bristol MX5 Challenge took place at Llandow Circuit to the West of Cardiff. Andy Laurence of Downend was lying in 2nd place in the championship after a win in Round 2, followed closely by Downend residents James Hurford and Garry Hendy. All three travelled to Llandow with father and son team, Paul and Curtis St George from Staple Hill. Garry was keen to go fast out of the blocks and set down a marker in first practice with Andy just 0.34 seconds behind in third place, both under the class record. James was 1.2 seconds off the pace, which was surprising given he'd spent the previous day practising at the venue with Curtis and Paul! Curtis was in 8th with Paul having a battle for 9th with 4 drivers separated by 0.35 seconds. Given that the event was run over 1.75 laps, that's only 0.2 seconds per lap! In second practice, Garry went faster, whilst Andy knocked even more time off to place 0.06 seconds behind going into the lunch break. James was struggling, as was Curtis in the uncharacteristically hot

weather. Paul played a blinder to jump into 4th place! Welsh cakes were the order of the day at the cafe. Llandow circuit has a great cafe! The afternoon was when it all counted and Andy managed to go faster still, resetting the class record in the process. Garry had a moment at the chicane and lost several seconds, dropping out of the top 6 behind James who was going slower on each run. Curtis was following suit with his slowest of the day, whilst Paul couldn't match his earlier time. Into the last run of the day, Andy was confident of going faster and Garry was certainly going to improve. Andy went faster still, but it wasn't enough as Nick Lear,

who had been chasing in third place most of the day improved to take the win, class record and a rather nice trophy. Andy finished second with Garry a few tenths behind. James found his mojo and slotted into 5th place behind the first round winner, Tom Caldecourt. Curtis hooked it up in the last run to finish 10th, whilst his dad, Paul, followed him home in 11th place. Andy now leads the

championship with Garry in 4th and James in 5th. All 3 are serious contenders for this year's championship. Round 4 is at Westonzoyland Airfield in May. If you want to watch them in action, they'll be part of a 155 car field at Castle Combe Circuit on Saturday 28th July. The event and championship are organised by Bristol Motor Club and spectating is free.

n COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION LGCA Trustees and staff met for their away day recently, and explored the ideas behind asset based community development. This approach encourages the talents, knowledge and energy that exist within the community as the starting point for working. As an association that was set up from within the community, this is very much in keeping with how we see our work unfolding. If you’re interested in this form of community development contact Alv, our Centre and Community Development Manager. We reflected on the work that has been done since we formed. It’s been a huge journey, with exciting achievements along the way. If you’re interested in getting involved or finding out more, get in touch! We’re also on the lookout for more stallholders for our Summer Sizzler event on July 7. Eagle-eyed residents will have noticed an increase in activity around the community centre. Things have been moving behind the scenes, and the work that was outstanding has been agreed and is being undertaken. This finally

Splatt the teacher!

moves us in the right direction, and we’re looking forward to putting our plans into action. When we gain access, we’ll need some time to get to know the building, furnish it, and prepare to open. We’re very grateful to all the groups and people interested in hiring the centre for their patience during the unexpected delays. We’ll be in touch with them as soon as we have some definite information. We’d like to thank everyone who renewed their membership ahead of the General Data Protection Regulations. Your membership will continue, and it will be even easier to make choices around how we communicate with you. If you’re not a member, sign up at our website. It’s easy and free! n PETER'S VISION

Winning ways WELL it’s been an interesting month in the eye world. The sun’s finally been out on consecutive days which brings joy to so many - particularly us outdoor types. Our big news, it’s official - you can now choose award winning lenses from your local eye and vision care specialists. Yes, our premier all vision lens has only gone and won an award for being well, just amazing. I’ve said this a few times myself, but then I would. To have the quality and design of the lens nationally recognised is, I’ll say it again - amazing! So what’s the fuss about, a lens is just a lens right? Well no not at all actually. Let me tell you about our lens design philosophy. Having accurately checked your spectacle prescription, we’ll listen to your individual eye and vision needs. We can then craft a pair of lenses that work in harmony with your eyes to deliver on our aim of letting you experience the most natural, comfortable and widest areas of clear vision. On top of this we also personalise the lens to suit your unique eye and vision needs. Sounds good right? Well I’ll let others speak for once. In this case our patients, who have

chosen clear natural vision have commented: ‘I can see, they’re brilliant’, ‘they’re really clear’ and ‘thank you, I can see again, clearly’. So whats the catch? Well, as our lenses can be made thin & light, as sunglasses (polaroid’s also an option naturally) and transitions (so they react & darken in the sun) as well as in ultra tough (so your rimless glasses survive like never before) I’m not sure there is a catch! Of course when you wear an amazing lens design it’s also important you look great and feel amazing! You can now chose a bespoke British designed spectacle frame from our TD collection - available in the finest materials including light and strong Japanese titanium or comfortable & light cotton acetate from Italy. We’ll make the frames to fit you and even discretely engrave your name on the inside for the ultimate personal touch! I’d best not forget our eye care - after all a key focus of our practices is providing you peace of mind about your eye health and vision. Our extended eye exam is designed for just this; in-depth and thorough eye care for all. We’d love to chat to you about choosing

Help for low-paid workers PEOPLE on low-paid, low-skilled jobs are being offered help to a brighter future through a new scheme. Up to 750 people in South Gloucestershire and a further 2,250 in Bristol and B&NES are being offered tailored personal and professional development help from careers progression coaches to improve their skills and job opportunities. Known as Future Bright, the scheme is costing £4 million to run. It is open to residents of South Gloucestershire, Bristol and B&NES, 19 or over, in work but receiving either working tax credit, child tax credit, housing benefit or a council tax reduction. It is not open to people on jobseeker’s allowance, employment and support allowance, income support or universal credit. The three councils, who together make up the West of England Combined Authority, will run the scheme, which is particularly aimed at social housing tenants, in cooperation with housing association and registered social landlords. West of England Mayor Tim Bowles said: “Future Bright will help people already in work who are on in-work benefits into secure, more meaningful and better-paid careers. We will also be encouraging employers to get involved in Future Bright. Investing in employees is good for individuals’ health and wellbeing, and good for business, so we will be providing free support to help businesses develop employee engagement schemes.” Anyone who wants to find out if they can be helped by the Future Bright scheme should call South Gloucestershire Council on 01454 866008 or email future.bright@southglos.gov.uk. Employers should email FutureBright@westofengland-ca.gov. uk. More information is also available at www.futurebright.org.uk.

You’ve got the skills to foster… you may not know it yet

“We love fostering, it’s the best thing We’ve ever done” Sue, Foster Carer

Become a foster carer with South Gloucestershire Council and make a real difference. We’re looking for foster carers for children of all age groups. If you have a spare room, childcare experience and the time, we’d love to hear from you.

FLY tipping continues to blight the Mangotsfield landscape. These photos show the extent of the problem in the area despite the council's Sort It recycling centre being close by. The first was taken in a lane by bungalows in Albion Close, the second in Hillside and the third at top of Long Road. All sites are within a 100 yard radius. Rodway councillor Michael Bell said: "The advice to the public is not to confront the culprits for fear of reprisals, but if possible to take vehicle registrations and contact South Gloucestershire Council." Members of the public are also asked to make a note of the date and time of the incident, a description of the people seen fly tipping and the materials being tipped, and to obtain photographic evidence if safe to do so. The council, which has a zero tolerance approach to fly tipping, says it can be dangerous, pollutes land and costs significant amounts of tax payers money to clear away. Members of the public are also advised never to touch waste as it could be hazardous. Fly tipping carries a fine of up to £5,000.

School promises 'sharper focus' after Ofsted

MANGOTSFIELD School has been told by the education watchdog Ofsted to up the pace of improvements. Inspectors visited the 1,147-pupil secondary school in March and their report concluded that the school requires improvement in five key areas, including leadership and management, teaching quality, pupil behaviour and achievement. Among their findings, the inspectors said school leaders had been slow to bring in improvements in the quality of teaching, particularly in science, and that work set did not always match the different abilities of pupils. They found a large minority of parents were not satisfied, saying: “Nearly one in three parents would not recommend the school.” Governors were found to have not done a good enough job in holding school leaders to account over pupils’ progress, while issues were also raised over how well disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs are taught and monitored. Inspectors identified 11 areas where they believe the school’s leaders, teachers and pupils need to improve. The school received the same overall rating from Ofsted in 2013 and 2015, before it became an academy as part of the Castle School Education Trust. The watchdog said: “Although partnerships with other schools in the trust have promoted greater sharing of best practice, this work has not led to a rise in

pupils’ achievement.” The inspectors did praise pupils’ progress in humanities and languages, which they said was down to “high-quality teaching and consistent practice”, and pointed to improvements in English teaching. The inspectors also highlighted better behaviour, with a fall in disruption to lessons and exclusions, thanks to the school’s ‘Ready to Learn’ rules. They said attendance had also improved, although too many disadvantaged youngsters were “persistently absent”. They said: “Leaders take an honest, accurate view of the school’s strengths and weaknesses. They know what needs to be done and are confronting underperformance.” Responding to the report, Mangotsfield School head teacher David Spence said

he was pleased Ofsted had noted the school’s strengths in humanities and languages and improvements in English, as well as improved behaviour. He said: “There for us are no surprises in the report.

“Inspectors have recognised that the school is improving but have asked that we accelerate the pace of change, especially to improve teaching. “We know that the quality of what is happening in every classroom is our priority moving forward, to ensure progress for all, particularly feedback and that work is even more closely tailored to student needs. “Inspectors said our students are well looked after and, having spoken to our students at length, described our school culture as ‘welcoming, tolerant and caring’. “Much has been done since 2015 but we know we can do more. “We need to have an even sharper focus on the classroom. The report is a really clear indication of where we need to focus our work to give all of our students the best possible education.”

n NEWS A ‘BEATING the Bounds’ procession and picnic took place on Lyde Green Common over the first May Bank Holiday weekend,. Organised by the Lyde Green Open Space group, on Sunday May 6 a group of 16 adults and children walked around the complete boundary of the Howsmoor Lane Common as part of Rogationtide. This is a traditional event that involves beating the boundaries of common land with willow sticks, as well as the making of prayers and blessings. During the event, the procession was led by the Rev Teresa Taylor from St James Church in Mangotsfield. Although the common land actually falls into the ecclesiastical parish of Pucklechurch, the vicar of Pucklechurch was unable to attend so granted Teresa permission to lead the walk instead. Also in attendance was Lyde Green resident and Emersons Green Town Councillor Sadik Al-Hassan and his family,

June, 2018

Keeping up tradition on common nature expert Rachel Tomlinson who put together a nature trail for children, and some representatives from South Gloucestershire Council’s TravelWest team who were promoting walking for health. Although the sun was shining and the event was well attended, there were some issues with motor bikers on one of the Common’s fields. Motor vehicles are not permitted on the Common land and the council installed some signs to promote this; however these have since been removed and the bikers have caused a lot of the land to be churned up and endangered walkers and dogs. Cate Biggs, chairwoman of Lyde Green Open Space group, said: “The police visited the common to ask the bikers to leave just before the walk started, but unfortunately they continued. Councillor Sadik AlHassan and other residents got lots of photo and video evidence,

Rev Teresa Taylor blessing the boundaries

which has now been passed on, and we hope that we’ll be able to stop this soon.” The Lyde Green Open Space group are urging residents to call 101 with as much information as possible every time bikers are seen or heard on the common. They would also like to remind dog walkers of the need to pick

up dog mess, and inform users that they are no longer able to bale hay from the common (one of their rights) due to the toxic waste and harmful bacteria that is present as a result of contaminated flood water flowing on to the space from developer land nearby.

The many sides of magical Morocco

ANY traveller will tell you that there are many different sides to Morocco. There’s the crazy bedlam that is Marrakech, relaxing beach side resorts in Agadir, desert landscapes high up in the Atlas Mountains and the picturesque views of Paradise Valley. The myriad of landscapes is harmonised with the diversity of the language too. Did you know that you’ll hear Arabic, Berber and French when exploring Morocco? It’s these unique qualities that help make Morocco as magical as it is today. During our Moroccan adventure, we explored the top attractions that Agadir had to offer, got lost in the souks of Marrakech and marvelled at the beauties of Paradise Valley. And now I’m here to clue you in on a little piece of our trip. Despite Agadir being destroyed by an earthquake in 1960, the rebuilt city is now a thriving hub of seaside resorts and vacationing tourists, with glimpses of Agadir’s past shining through all of that. The Oufella Ruins, a medieval kasbah, which looks down on the city from atop a mountain wasn’t rebuilt after the earthquake, showcasing what ancient Agadir may once have looked like and also how bad the earthquake really was. And not too far from Agadir is

Views across Paradise Valley the outstanding Paradise Valley. We boats knewCanal we’d stumbled on something special as soon as we saw acres of palm trees, colourful roadside cafes and the most incredible views across the Moroccan landscape. This was when we understood that Paradise Valley really is exactly that – paradise. You can explore the valley on foot or by car, and you will find winding rivers, cavernous gorges, tropical palm trees and many impressive viewpoints. If you want to follow in my footsteps, I’d highly recommend coming here with several hours to spare as you’ll find it very difficult to leave. I can also recommend a couple of rest stops within the valley: Cafe Tropic,

where you can chill out by the river, and the Panoramic Cafe, which offers traditional Moroccan mint tea and views across the valley from its terrace. Many visitors to Morocco also recommend popular Marrakech, mostly for the souks, but there is so much more to this popular destination than just that. You’ll also find the mesmerising Bahia Palace, which was built for a Sultan; the ancient Islamic college of Ben Youssef Madrasa, and endless riads perfect for whiling away a few hours in. My only slight hesitation in all that I saw within Morocco was how booming the animal tourism trade is. Riding camels and taking

photos with snakes and monkeys are very popular things to do in Morocco, but sadly these animals are often mistreated, and with each sale, more money is pumped into this trade. But if you can look beyond that and see Morocco for the vibrant and diverse place that it is, then you’re in for a very memorable trip. Will I see you there? n AROUND THE WIs SHORTWOOD VILLAGE WI HELLO again! We opened our meeting in May by welcoming two guests and hopefully, after a fun evening, we will see them again soon. Our social team member Jo, talked to us about her ambitious plans for our Host Events next year. With an overall vote of approval the wheels are in motion and we are all on board to showcase these events to the Group in 2019. A request was made for help and donations of scones for the ‘Tea on the Lawns’ event on 2 June in aid of the Wallace and Gromit Appeal. The resolution about ‘mental health issues’was discussed and debated then followed by a vote being taken by the members. After the serious stuff, we had a welcome cuppa with homemade ginger parkin and chocolates supplied by a lady who celebrated a ‘big birthday’ in May. To finish the evening we had a Beetle Drive which is always fast, furious and hilarious and gets the old grey matter working. At the June meeting, we are looking forward to having a talk by a spiritualist. We would love you to join us for a free taster and our next meeting is 14 June at 7.30 in a room through Shortwood Chapel in the middle of Shortwood Village. For more details please contact charles@ccce. demon.co.uk. Lynne

MANGOTSFIELD WI OUR May meeting was emotive, as always we discussed the campaign in question. This year there is a large emphasis on ‘Mental Health Matters’ as mental health matters as much as physical health. The NFWI urges all WI members to recognise the importance of parity between mental health and physical health, and take action to make it as acceptable to talk about mental health issues as much as physical health issues and to lobby government for better support for mental illness. The WI have been instrumental in campaigns over the years. June brings our birthday celebrations and all members are invited to the party on Monday June 25. We will be celebrating with a cream tea and this year we will be welcoming a string quartet. How very civilised this will be with the theme coinciding with the suffragette colours – green, purple and white. The ‘Manor Cup’ is a fancy cup and saucer. For details about Craft Club, Supper Club , Luncheon Club and any other club, details will be

emailed to members shortly. We welcome women of all ages and from any area, you don’t have to live in or around Mangotsfield to join us. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors for the first 2 visits. Contact us via email at mangotsfieldwi@gmail.com Our website is www.mangotsfieldwi. org.uk You can also follow us on Twitter @mangotsfieldwi or you can Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ Mangotsfield/ Kate Tarr

BROMLEY HEATH WI WHERE do I start with all the different things at our May meeting? Serious stuff first: 1. Our members overwhelmingly voted to support the NFWI Resolution

for 2018 to promote the cause Mental Health Matters. 2. Each year Bromley Heath WI select a charity. Three members Fiona, Mel and Julie nominated and gave short presentations about the excellent work being undertaken locally by Kinergy, Headway and One26 respectively. The winner by a small margin was Headway – a charity providing support to people suffering brain injuries. We look forward to raising funds on their behalf from September onwards. We are all so proud of Mel Scragg who has just completed the Three Peaks Challenge in under 24 hours and Cheryl presented her with a certificate. On to the fun but fattening bits! Our May meeting theme was Pimms and Puds. We had 20 delicious desserts in the competition. First prize went to Irene Chester for her lemon and raspberry brioche pudding and second prize was shared by Marian for her ice cream and Deb’s fruit jelly loaf tureen. Members then sampled all the puddings – diets were put on hold for a few hours! Margaret Hanwell

n NEWS

This shop can't close - we'll have to buy it! A SHOP that has been a fixture of Downend’s main shopping street for years has been saved from closure, thanks to customers who couldn’t bear to see it shut. Earlier this year the Downend Voice reported that Fabrics Plus owner Brigitte Parker was preparing to close the shop in Badminton Road, after 30 years in business. But it has now been bought by Robin and Sarah Honeywill, who have been customers since before the shop moved to Downend from Keynsham, six years ago. Sarah is a keen seamstress, who has been sewing since she was five years old and already runs her own sewing and crafts business online. She makes everything from quilts and curtains to children’s clothes. Sarah said: “The shop is where I’ve bought all my supplies for my sewing. I thought ‘it can’t shut - we need to buy it’, so we did.We couldn’t bear to see it close. “I feel a bit like Victor Kiam,

who liked his shaver so much he bought the company.” Robin and Sarah, from Keynsham, plan to continue to employ the eight part-time staff who currently work at Fabrics Plus. Sarah paid tribute to the staff’s knowledge, saying: “You can come in here and say ‘I want to make a quilt’ and they will tell you what to buy - people here will know the answers. You don’t need to go on Google, you can come here and chat.”

Robin has worked in sales for 25 years and was looking for a new challenge after years on the road as a rep. He is also a trained upholsterer, having developed an interest through his parents’ business, Honeywill Antiques, which traded in Clifton in the 1970s and 80s. Robin said: “Sarah was a regular customer, and where else in the Bristol area would she be able to go to get the fabric she needed? The only way to do it was to take over. “There’s so much in the press about the high street struggling, it’s hugely important that small independent businesses are supported. This is a success story - this business is a good business

and we want to see the high street continue to boom.” The changeover between owners was set to take place over the Spring Bank Holiday, with Mrs Parker’s last day on Saturday May 26 and the Honeywills opening for business for the first time on Tuesday, May 29. Sarah and Robin intend to keep things as they are at first but, after they have settled in, they have plans to start running sewing classes, possibly in the evenings. If those are a success, more could follow, including classes for children. Mrs Parker told the Voice: "I am very happy that Robin and Sarah are taking over the business, they are lovely people and I am sure they will continue to grow 'Fabrics Plus' as they have lots of ideas for taking it forward. I have no doubt that with their enthusiasm and public support Fabrics Plus will be in Downend high street for many years to come.

Tie Card Holder With Liz Freke of Hattie’s Hooray’s With Father’s Day just around the corner, why not turn one of Dad’s old ties into a handy card holder! Personal and creative – the perfect gift and so easy to make!

You will need:

Old Tie Sewing machine Sewing needle Contrasting colour thread Scissors Ruler Pins Velcro

4. Either machine or hand stitch across the straight edge to create a neat edge

Taking action in war on plastic 5. Now bring the neat, straight edge up towards the pointed end, folding where your pins are (at 11cms) and secure with pins at each side. As the tie is tapered, make sure you centre the folded edge so it looks symmetrical.

CHILDREN in Banksy Hub (Year 3 and 4) at Pucklechurch Primary School have been listening to the news about plastic pollution and wanted to do something to make a difference. Learning the facts and statistics about “Our Blue Planet” and the effects that pollution have been having on it inspired them to take to the village streets every Tuesday afternoon to pick up litter. They have also been raising awareness of the issues with family and friends. Assistant head Alex Capel said: “We are very proud of how seriously the children have got involved in this. They know that this not only affects their generation but generations to come. At Pucklechurch Primary, by allowing the children to drive their learning agenda, we feel that this has brought their learning to life in a meaningful way. We want them to continue making a difference.”

1. Measure 34cms from the point of the tie downwards and mark with pins. Cut straight across the tie at this point.

n SPORT A JUNIOR football team from Mangotsfield is on a mission to help provide kit and equipment for a community in The Gambia, West Africa. The players, coaches and parents of Mangotsfield United Juniors Under 10 Colts have been collecting donations of old kit to send to the children of Ganjur, a small fishing village on the West coast of the African nation. Their coach, Lee Selway, explained how the opportunity arose. “A colleague from the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) team in the office was telling me about a project they’ve been supporting to help renovate the community centre. "He told me how the local children were all football-crazy but that they had very little kit or equipment.” But it was Lee’s son, the team’s goalie, who was behind the idea to help. “We’re lucky to have new kits and all the right equipment for training”, said Ethan, nine.

Colts collect footie kit for Africa

Members of the Colts with some of the kit to be sent to Africa, and some of the children who will benefit “My idea was to give them all of our old kit.” The players and parents of the Colts have been rooting through cupboards and trawling through wardrobes to track down donations for the children in Gambia. The haul is impressive.

“We’ve got old kits, football boots, shinpads, goalie gloves and trainers to pass on,” said Lee. All of the donations are being taken over in the next few weeks, when the next group of volunteers head out to Ganjur

to help. “This is a fantastic gesture,” said Alex Davies, head of CSR at St James’s Place Wealth Management. “The kit will be put to great use and I know that the children will be really grateful.”

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

Top tips for driving SOMEHOW, a couple of months ago I was approached to give advice for Citroen car customers about how to avoid back pain on long journeys and now I am suddenly the “Citroen ergonomic Consultant! And never one to miss an opportunity I thought it would be good to share the advice as we go into the season of long car journeys and traffic jams on the M5 to Cornwall. You might love going on road trips and feel quite comfortable sitting in your car seat for hours on end but be aware that you may be setting yourself up for future spinal problems. With back pain being the number 2 reason why we visit our GPs and costing the NHS £1.3Million per day, it is not surprising to see that over 60% of drivers in this survey agreed with the statement ‘my car seat can make my back ache worse after a long trip’ and maybe more importantly, over 40% of drivers said that the car seat was the main cause of their backache. According to a recent survey commissioned by AutoExpress magazine, a poor seating position in your car can lead to both back in neck problems while a slouched position can also compromise your safety. A slouched position can alter

the way you wear the seat belt, reducing its effectiveness while an uncomfortable car seat can also lead to driver distraction and loss of concentration. Here are some tips that I have created to help. 1. M ake sure that your car seat is not too far away from the pedals. When you fully depress the clutch your legs should remain slightly bent. 2. M ake sure that your backrest is not tilted back too far. Your elbows should be slightly bent when you position your hands correctly on the steering wheel in the ‘10 to 2 position’. 3. M ake sure that you increase the lumbar support as much as possible to support the natural arch in your back to avoid slouching. If you do not have a lumbar support built-in, you can use a portable, dedicated lumbar support cushion or roll up a towel and put it behind your back. 4. M ake sure that the top of your headrest is above the top of your ears. If it is too low it can increase the risk of neck injuries in case of an accident. 5. N ow, stretch yourself up and make your spine as tall as possible sitting in an ideal posture. Set the rearview mirror so you can just about see the

traffic behind you. This will help to correct your posture every time you look in your rearview mirror, because if you slouch you will not be able to use the rearview mirror. 6. Make sure that your seatbelt is correctly positioned. If possible, adjust the height so it is not sitting on your neck and according to the Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), the belt should be worn as tight as possible, with no slack and the lap belt should go over the pelvic region, not the stomach. 7. On long journeys take regular breaks. We advise every 1 to 2 hours. 8. Why not call in to the clinic and speak to a chiropractor if you are concerned about your spinal health and get your car seat checked as part of our service. So when you are planning your next camping trip to Devon or royal wedding picnic please follow my (with now super Citroen credentials) top tips to help avoid the chance of getting back pain behind the wheel. Of course if you need any more help you know where we are! As its Molly’s last year before school in September we are taking advantage of the last cheap holiday for years and going to the

south of France for our Annual Summer vacation with my Mum and Dad in toe. I you think that I am too old to still go on holiday with my parents then you would be very wrong. They have an exquisite knowledge of the local wines and are not bad baby sitters too, honestly we are lucky they want to come! Enjoy the sunshine, I can’t wait to tell you all about it
