Relief on the ring road as viaduct reopens THE Avon Ring Road at Bromley Heath should be back to four lanes by the time you read this edition of Emersons Green Voice. The contraflow introduced on the A4174 while work to repair the Bromley Heath Viaduct was carried out was set to be removed during the last weekend of April. But some of the roads which have been shut during the roadworks could now stay closed - a move which has brought protests from motorists and residents (see page 4). The southern viaduct over the river Frome shut in July last year so that vital structural work could be carried out. As well
as the structural work the viaduct has been resurfaced, new railings have been installed and the shared bike and footpath upgraded, with safety barriers to divide pedestrians and cyclists from road traffic. Council cabinet member for transport Colin Hunt said: “We’re pleased that this major engineering project is coming to an end and that the viaduct has been made fit for the future and now features a greatly improved shared footpath for cyclists and pedestrians. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank residents and businesses for their

‘Her mum would have been so proud’ AN exceptionally brave girl has been raising funds for the cancer centre that cared for her mum. Alexandra Couston (known as Alex) was diagnosed with leukaemia in December 2015. During Alex’s treatment on ward 703 at The Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC), her partner Conrad Hutton often spent the night at her side, trying to sleep on a chair, making a bed by pushing two chairs together or lying on the bench seating in the patient lounge, as unfortunately the ward wasn’t equipped with sleeper chairs. Following a long and brave battle, Alex died in July 2017. Wanting to do something positive in her memory, Conrad and their three daughters Scarlett, Mabel and Iris decided to collect donations in lieu of flowers at her celebration of life service, in line with her wishes. The idea was to help fund the purchase of a Readybed Sleeper Chair for ward 703 as part of a campaign by Above & Beyond, a charity that raises funds to support Bristol’s city centre hospitals. These chairs easily convert from a chair into a bed, allowing loved ones to stay with patients during their time in hospital and is something that would have helped Alex’s family during her treatment. As part of the fundraising appeal, Iris, who is a Year 4 pupil at Emersons Green Primary School, also decided to organise a second hand toy and cake sale at her school with two of her friends on Friday March 16. Conrad said: “One day Iris came home from school to say that she, and her friends Evie-
Iris, 9, raises money for hospital Bea and Megan, had decided to hold a toy and cake sale to raise funds for Above & Beyond. They had a meeting with their headteacher Mr Hemmings to discuss it and decide on a date, and Iris wrote a short article for the school newsletter to publicise it and also spoke to the whole school in assembly too. “I am so proud of her for so many reasons; for wanting to help others; for being so brave; for her determination to do it; for her focus on making it successful; for raising around £600. Most of all I am so proud, and I know her mum Alex would be too, that she has been able to, at the age of nine, make such a positive contribution. Alex always thought of others before herself and I can see so many of her qualities in Iris.” As part of their fundraising Alex’s family have been able to raise £2000, helping Above & Beyond to purchase four Readybed Sleeper Chairs for BHOC’s Haematology Department. Lydia McGivern, community fundraising officer for Above & Beyond said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to Iris, Megan and Evie-Bea who did an amazing job fundraising for Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre.” To find out more about Above & Beyond, visit https://www. aboveandbeyond.org.uk

Should we keep 'temporary' road closures? ROAD closures brought in to stop drivers using rat runs during work on the Bromley Heath viaduct could be made permanent. South Gloucestershire Council is set to keep five roads, closed during the road works, shut after the Avon Ring Road fully reopens while it runs a consultation on their future. It has also closed an extra two roads north of the ring road, with a view to shutting them permanently. The council has used what are known experimental traffic orders to keep the roads closed while it decides on their future. On the Downend side of the A4174, the Bromley Heath Road service road between Quakers Drive and Bromley Drive will stay shut. The section of Bromley Heath Road north of the ring road, along with Moorend Road, Cuckoo Lane and Bury Hill, which link it to the B4058 Bristol Road and A432 Badminton Road, are also set to close. And the council also wants to shut Ruffet Road and Coalsack Lane, near the Kendleshire Golf Club. Neither road has been closed during the ring road works. The proposed closures have brought a flood of complaints on the Facebook page the council set up to inform the public of the
Bromley Heath Viaduct works. Writing on the page, Trefor Southwell said: “What a load of bull, these roads are meant to reopen and should do until any consultation has taken place.” The decision to close Ruffet Road and Coalsack Lane has brought a strong response from the Kendleshire Golf Club, which has set up a petition on its website against the closures. On its petition page the club said: “We have been as alarmed at this as local residents, both the complete closure and the failure to even discuss with local stakeholders ideas or options first. “This will inevitably impact those users of the golf club that travel along Ruffet Road/Coalsack Lane when getting to the Clubhouse, not to mention the potential
for increased fly-tipping, etc on the newly created redundant stretches of road, and we have filed a strongly-worded response to the Council regarding our business concerns over the closures.” South Gloucestershire cabinet councillor for transport Colin Hunt told the Voice the Bromley Heath Viaduct work had disrupted traffic patterns. Experimental orders would allow for testing and alteration of the restrictions before any permanent measures are put in place. Once the viaduct work is complete, the closures associated with it would otherwise have to be removed, he said. “As the dual carriageway on the A4174 at Bromley Heath Viaduct returns to full capacity, this provides an opportunity to see how stopping the route from the Kendleshire crossroad through to Westerleigh Road at Henfield interacts with other closures that were put in place during the viaduct work. “With these road closures in place we can accurately assess how they work and their impact on communities and road users.” Comments on the proposed closures can be made at https://consultations.southglos. gov.uk/consult.ti The Kendleshire’s petition can be found at: https://ig.kendleshire.com/ruffetroad

n NEWS From Page 1 Buses will run every 20 minutes from 6am until 7pm, then every half an hour until 9pm on Mondays to Saturdays during the summer. A more comprehensive winter timetable is due to be introduced by the operator in September. Some other bus routes are changing as a result of the introduction - and because the A4174 viaduct has reopened - so check your timetables before you travel. Although Metrobus recently unveiled a grey, black and red double-decker in Bristol, it says the m3 route buses will be green. They will have USB charging points at every seat and free wifi. First has spent more than £1.5 million on the m3 route vehicles, which use lower-emission Euro VI technology. Councillor Colin Hunt, lead member for planning, transport and strategic environment at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “This is good news for everyone who uses the roads – a reliable bus service, direct to the city centre, avoiding congestion hot spots, will encourage people

And, crucially, it will provide a fast, reliable, direct route from the south of the City to the north, with the first route running from the centre to UWE and business centres at Emerald Park and the Bristol & Bath Science Park. I for one will use it and I hope many more people will join me to give it a try. The bus-only junction will also noticeably speed up the journey.” First West of England managing director James Freeman said: “We are very

excited about the launch of this new Metrobus service. Metrobus promises to revolutionise bus transport in Bristol and South Gloucestershire by offering a premium service, faster getting on and off, and speedier travel by virtue of the dedicated road infrastructure and off bus ticketing.” The other two main Metrobus routes are the m1, which will link Hengrove Park in South Bristol to Cribbs Causeway, via Bedminster and the city centre, while the m2 will link the Long Ashton park and ride to the city centre and Temple Meads. Both are behind schedule, as is the m3 link to Cribbs Causeway. First will operate the m3 and m2, with Bristol Community Transport, HCT Group, operating the m1.

Barn's lottery boost Nicola is Labour’s choice for Kingswood A PROJECT to help secure the future of Winterbourne’s Medieval Barn has taken a major step forward thanks to a £936,600 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). South Gloucestershire Council has been working with the Winterbourne Medieval Barn Trust (WMBT) to develop a £1.76 million project that will conserve and refurbish the 14th century barn and its adjacent buildings. A heritage education centre will be created to demonstrate the history of the barn and its architecture. The restoration will enable the trust to offer many more events and activities throughout the year, including heritage and craft-themed events, craft workshops, guided tours, more musical and theatrical performances, and a schools’ programme. There will be new rentable workshops for creating
traditional crafts and more space will be available for public and commercial hire. A trust spokesman said: "As a bunch of volunteers, we’ve come a long way in 15 years towards saving the Medieval Barn, but we still have some way to go. The trust has raised a huge amount of money in the last year, but still has the final £50,000 or so to raise before this major restoration work can begin. " Any individuals or businesses who would like to make a donation to help save this unique heritage building for the community, can contact the trust chairman at suep@ winterbournebarn.org.uk or donate via the website (‘support us’ button). New volunteers would be very welcome to help with this community project. Visit the website http://www. winterbournebarn.org.uk/ volunteering/

Nicola, an NHS mental health specialist and Bristol City Councillor, secured a landslide victory among party members in the constituency. More than 130 people packed the community centre in Longwell Green for the announcement of the vote. Nicola said “I feel very honoured to have the overwhelming backing of Labour members in Kingswood. We have a strong and effective team to ensure we make Kingswood Labour again and elect an MP who works for the many and not the few”“My priorities will include
providing a fair settlement for local schools, defending our NHS from cuts and privatisation and highlighting the plight of children with special educational needs.”

n NEWS THE planning blueprint which will set out the future of house building and transport in the region has been submitted to the Government for approval. South Gloucestershire Council has worked together with Bristol, B&NES and North Somerset to produce the plan, which includes the places where new housing and business developments will be built between now and 2036. Known as the West of England Joint Spatial Plan, the blueprint has been produced alongside a transport plan, laying out how the region can meet the increasing infrastructure demands that growth will bring, as well as the projects needed to tackle existing pressure on roads and public transport. The plan includes provision for the building of 105,500 new homes, 32,500 of which will be in South Gloucestershire. In the Downend area, most new homes will be built near Emersons Green. There is also provision to maximise the use of so-called “brownfield sites”, which have previously been

Councils agree to aim for 105,000 more homes developed but are now vacant, for residential and employment developments in urban areas. Elsewhere in South Gloucestershire, thousands of new homes will be built on sites already under development, such as the former Filton Airfield between Patchway and Cribbs Causeway, and Harry Stoke. More controversially, five “Strategic Development Sites” have been earmarked in Coalpit Heath, Charfield, Thornbury, Yate and Buckover - an area between Thornbury and the M5 where a new “garden village” is planned, despite fierce opposition from neighbours. Now that the plan has been sent to the Government, Communities Secretary Sajid Javid is expected to appoint an independent planning inspector to carry out a public
examination, which is likely to take place in the autumn. The inspector will then report back to the councils and may propose amendments. After that the councils must again ensure the plan meets the relevant laws and decide whether or not to adopt it. A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: “The West of England JSP is the first such joint planning approach in the UK, which sees councils working together to agree the number of new homes and jobs that are needed; the most appropriate locations where that growth should be located; and the infrastructure needed to support that growth.” South Gloucestershire Council is also preparing its own local plan, which will provide a guide to planning in the area for residents and developers,

within the confines of the West of England Joint Spatial Plan. A consultation on the local plan was launched earlier this year and was set to run until April 30. More details can be found at www.southglos.gov. uk/newlocalplanfeb2018 and comments can be made by e-mail to PlanningPolicy@southglos. gov.uk or by post to: Strategic Planning Policy & Specialist Advice Team, Department for Environment and Community Services, PO Box 1954, Bristol BS37 0DD. • Extra money to speed up the building of homes in Bristol, South Glos, B&NES and North Somerset was agreed by the Government last month. The four councils believe that the commitment in the Joint Spatial Plan to the housing targets is the reason for the funding.

New Emersons Green town hall opens AFTER four years of waiting, Emersons Green Town Council’s new town hall has finally opened on Westerleigh Road. Planning permission was initially granted for the project in 2014, but construction progress came to a stop when asbestos was discovered in the ground where the town hall was to be built. However thanks to a joint agreement with Whitbread, owners of the Premier Inn next door, the building was finally able to be constructed. As a result, the town council and tax payers have saved an estimated £130k in the process and the hotel is also benefiting from a two-storey expansion, adding an extra 24 rooms as well as creating four new jobs and an additional 28 parking spaces. The building, which has been built on the town council’s land, officially opened on Thursday April 12 at a ceremony attended by staff, current and previous councillors, as well as South Gloucestershire Council’s Chair of Council, Ian Blair. Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Mayor of Emersons Green Councillor Rich Nichols said: “This is a monumental occasion that has been four years in the planning. A lot of work has gone into getting us to this stage, and I’d like to thank all of our current staff and councillors old and present for their support. “This building is not only easily accessible and provides a great place for us to meet visitors, but it has saved parishioners money too, and I think you’ll all agree that we have a fantastic facility here.”
Councillors and guests at the official opening of the new Emersons Green Town Hall The town council will now run its administrative operations from the new facility, therefore freeing up the space that it uses at the existing village hall. In addition, the new town hall includes space for an office, meeting room, kitchen and toilets, as well as one disabled and eight standard parking spaces. Visitors are welcome to visit the Emerson Green Town Council’s new offices from Monday – Friday between 9am and 4pm. Blackhorse Primary is still riding high BLACKHORSE Primary in Emersons Green has been given another glowing report by Ofsted. It has retained its good rating after a one-day visit in February. Head teacher Simon Botten and staff were disappointed that the inspector, Sandra Woodman, would not put the school forward for a full inspection that could give it the chance to earn a judgement of outstanding. In a statement on the school website, they say: “This was what we were aiming for and what we, our school improvement officer and the governors felt was what Blackhorse deserved given its current high performance. “Whilst this is disappointing for us as a staff (we aim for excellence and anything less isn’t what we aspire to) the report does highlight lots of the things which we know make Blackhorse a great school to work in and go
to. More importantly, it won’t change our desire to be the best school in the world and we will continue to work extremely hard
with this aim in mind.” The inspector, in her letter to Mr Botten, said that Blackhorse provided a happy and exciting
place for children to learn, enabling them to leave the school well equipped for the next phase of their learning. "You, your leadership team and governors share a clear vision that every child should reach his or her full potential. You work closely with your capable leaders to drive forward improvements to promote effective teaching and a stimulating curriculum," she said. Ms Woodman noted that parents and pupils appreciated the diverse range of enrichment activities and extra-curricular clubs on offer to pupils. She also highlighted the school's "unwavering focus on improving the education of disadvantaged pupils" and its culture of continually looking for ways to improve the quality of the education, such as a new way of teaching reading skills.

Scarecrows everywhere!
Head teacher Karl Hemmings and pupils celebrate
DOWNEND, Staple Hill and Bromley Heath came alive with 74 movie themed scarecrows. What started as a fundraiser for Christ Church Infants School turned into a brilliant fun, family event, with lots of people out hunting for scarecrows. Families from the school were given the opportunity to purchase a character to make, and some of the businesses along Downend High Street, Lincombe Barn Pre-school, The Bromley Tea Rooms, Christ Church and Pendennis Good News Church also joined the fun. Organiser Jodie Godfrey, chair of CCI parent-teacher association, said: “The event which had an amazing community feel" The event raised £750 , which will go towards projects that benefit all the children, and will pay for items which are outside the school’s budget.
Ofsted thumbs-up for primary school EMERSONS Green Primary School is celebrating after it retained its ‘Good’ Ofsted rating. An inspector visited the school on Guest Avenue in March, almost four years to the day for a short inspection to take place. Writing to the school following the one-day visit, inspector Richard Lucas praised leaders for maintaining the good quality of education and their constant effort sto improve the school. He also commented on their strong commitment to safeguarding and the school’s overall inclusiveness, stating that it is “warm and welcoming to all its pupils” and that pupils are “polite and courteous to adults and each other.” Karl Hemmings, headteacher of Emersons Green Primary School has been in post since January 2016. He had been deputy head of the school, before moving on to teach at schools in Hanham and Yate. Speaking of the latest short inspection report, he said: “Our school is quite unique in different ways, as we have a dedicated resource base for pupils with special educational needs and physical or visually impaired disabilities, and so we have lots of pride about our inclusiveness. “We were excited about Ofsted visiting as we’ve had lots of changes in the school, and the element of the report that made us particularly proud was that it was so positive - it really validated the work that has been done to raise standards here. “The inspectors completely recognised what was special about the school, the behaviour of children and the things that are so important to us and parents which is fantastic.” To read Emerson Green Primary School’s latest Ofsted report, visit: https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/inspection-reports/find-inspectionreport/provider/ELS/131767

What can we do to keep our children safe?
A MUM from Lyde Green is taking action after her daughter was the victim of an anti-social behaviour incident. Ursula Shepherd has lived in Lyde Green for nearly two years with her two daughters aged 14 and 12. She works full time in child protection, and runs her own business called Child Protection Academy. Following one of her daughters experiencing an incident of antisocial behaviour earlier this year, she decided to speak out. Ursula said: “My daughter went to the park in Lyde Green to meet a friend during February half term, and there was a mixture of teenage girls and boys there on bikes, making lots of noise. While my daughter was there, she heard some of the group talking about her and she started to feel uncomfortable. Her and her friend decided to leave, but unfortunately they were followed and she had water thrown at her. “She came home and told me what happened, and I phoned 101 to get some advice. I was told to report the incident to the police, which I did. My daughter has been Ursula Shepherd really traumatised by the situation and she doesn’t want to go to the park any more. After sharing the incident on the Lyde Green Local Facebook page, I received comments from neighbours regarding similar anti-social behaviour incidents in the area, and I decided that something needed to be done about it.” After Ursula mentioned the incident on Facebook, Emersons Green town councillor Sadik Al-Hassan got in touch with her to say that he would raise the issue at the next council meeting, and Ursula agreed to go along and put her point across during a five-minute talk. During the meeting, councillors said that
funding is being found to channel young people’s energy and keep them occupied through various activities such as boxing. In addition, Ursula has also decided that once the new Lyde Green community centre is open that she would like to start running training sessions for parents and children on child protection and how to stay safe. Speaking about her plans, she added: “I’m a child protection advocate and I think educating children and parents is an important thing to do. I have spoken to Lyde Green Community Association about running workshops once the community centre is open, so that parents have access to knowledge, and children have the power to protect themselves if they are put in similar situation to my daughter. “I’m passionate about the issue and I am willing to try and make a difference and change things as I care about my community and the children that live here. No one should feel threatened where they live. It would be wonderful to have sense of community, and to have somewhere that other children can go to, as well as get the community together to let people know they are not alone and that we all support each other too.” Commenting on the recent spate of incidents, Councillor Rachael Hunt said: “Anti-social behaviour is a big concern in Lyde Green and Emersons Green, and the town council wants to help residents in any way that we can. “Things are moving in the right direction at the moment, and we are looking to increase activities for young people in the area as an ongoing solution to the problem.” If you are interested in finding out more about courses and workshops that Child Protection Academy will run at Lyde Green community centre, contact Ursula by emailing ursula@ childprotectionacademy.co.uk or call 07861 749033.

Bandit the dog joins police drugs raid A TEENAGER has been arrested on suspicion of dealing cannabis after a raid on a house in Emersons Green. A police dog was used to sniff out a suspected stash of the Class B drug as officers searched a house in Colliers Break on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 18. Cash and drug-related equipment were also seized by police, who arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of possessing cannabis with intent to supply. He was later released but remains under investigation. Avon and Somerset police said the operation involved neighbourhood and response officers, volunteer special constables and specialist search dog Bandit, pictured. On the same afternoon an address in nearby Lyde Green was also searched. Another man is due to attend a police station
voluntarily after being found in possession of a small amount of cannabis during the operation. Neighbourhood PC James Rochford said: "The community has been reporting issues with people coming and going at all hours. We're grateful for the information they have been giving us.It can sometimes take us a while to build the evidence we need to get a warrant from the court but I hope this activity will show that we’re listening and acting on their information about criminal activity." Anyone with information about crime can contact the neighbourhood team by calling 101 or online

There's more to Amsterdam than first meets the eye
A
MSTERDAM is a place everyone seems to have heard of. It’s synonymous with the sixties culture; living free and being free, yet there is so much more to this vibrant and diverse of European cities. Yes, you can head to Amsterdam to take part in their more frivolous, uninhibited side. But this shouldn’t be the only reason you visit. It's where infamous child author, Anne Frank, lived in hiding with her family for 2 years during WWII until they were found out. It’s where two bars battle out for the crown of “oldest pub in Amsterdam”. It’s where exquisite masterpieces can be found including ‘Sunflowers’ by Van Gogh, and Vermeer’s ‘The Milkmaid’. And it’s where you can walk alongside 165 canals. One of the first activities on your Amsterdam wishlist should be to scout out the Anne Frank House. There’s still so much about this annex that remains untouched, while other parts have been lovingly reimagined to help bring the whole experience to life. This includes a free audio tour, which walks you on a path through the family’s life in the annex. Although you can buy tickets on the door, it’s recommended you book in advance online, otherwise you’ll likely find yourself waiting for hours without any confirmed entry. Amsterdam is also renowned for its art museums and galleries, with two of the most famous of all being the Van Gogh Museum
Canal boats and Rijksmuseum. While the Van Gogh Museum houses works of art throughout Van Gogh’s life, the Rijksmuseum focuses on a wide range of art including historic pieces between the years of 1200 to 2000, as well as more modern pieces from the Dutch Golden Age. During our visit, we also embarked on a walking tour with an Amsterdam local who uncovered many hidden gems for us - both historic and modern. One of my favourite discoveries was the story he told us about the two pubs that claim to be the oldest in
Amsterdam. Cafe Karpershoek was built in 1606, while In ‘t Aepjen (‘In the Monkeys’) was built in 1519. Clearly one of them is lying about being the oldest pub. But which one? No-one can seem to find a liquor license for In ‘t Aepjen before it was reopened in 1990, yet there’s proof that the pub dates back to 1519. Could this be the unofficial oldest pub in Amsterdam? But when you also want a break from history and art, Amsterdam’s natural beauties open their arms to you. Walks along the canals, picnics in Vondelpark, relaxing bike
rides along the 250 miles of cycle paths… and when you’re finished with all of that? Just hop on a canal cruise for as little as €11 per adult. So next time you think all there is to Amsterdam is partying and sin… think again. Justine Cross is a travel writer and business blogger based in Emersons Green. Toys galore - thanks! A MUM has been overwhelmed with toy donations for the play group she is starting in Lyde Green. Lindsay Wheeler has lived in Lyde Green for three years with her husband, six-year-old daughter and two-year-old son. She works part time as a hairdresser, but a few months ago decided that she’d like to do something that she could bring her son along to as well, and she realised that although there are toddler groups in Emersons Green, nothing is available for parents in Lyde Green at the moment. After talking to her sister-in-law Hugrūn Dunn from Mangotsfield and friend Micaela Williams from Kingswood, they decided to get together and set up one themselves, called “Little Play @ Lyde Green”. Lindsay said: “There are lots of young families here in Lyde Green, and although I have met lots of mums whose children go to school with my daughter at Lyde Green Primary, there hasn’t been an opportunity for me to meet parents with children my son’s age. “I got talking to Hugrūn and Micaela, and we decided to contact Lyde Green Community Association. We met with the manager of the hall about six weeks ago, where we talked about the ideas that we had.” The plan is for the playgroup to run on a Tuesday or Friday morning from 10-11.45am, with tea and coffee provided for free. It will be run on a voluntary basis, and parents will just be asked to pay a couple of pounds charge to cover the cost of the hall hire. They are also going to be open during the first week of the Christmas, Easter and summer holidays, and plan to run disco events for siblings and photography sessions too. Lindsay has said that as parents will be present with their children, the organisers don’t require any specific qualifications to run the playgroup, but they will be completing first aid training for their peace of mind.
Vintage venture
Lindsey with Hugrūn and Micaela and some of the donated toys Lindsay said: “Toys are expensive and as we are running the playgroup on a voluntary basis, we thought we would put out a message on Facebook to say what we’re doing and see if anyone had any toys to donate. “We’ve had loads of donations so far. Lots have come from the Lyde Green Local Facebook group, and my house looks like a toy shop at the moment! “We are going to have lots of toys there, and every week we will have a different craft, as well as a break halfway through for story time. Not only will this give the kids a break from playing, but we hope that the parents will sit down in a circle together and get to know each other too.” Lindsay says that once Lyde Green Community Association have been handed the keys for the community centre, it will take a few weeks for them to get things sorted internally, and they are hoping that the playgroup will be up and running by the time the summer holidays start. Lindsay is still looking for donations of baby play mats for the playgroup. If you have one, contact the Little Play @ Lyde Green Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ littleplaylyde/

Over 20 stall holders will be selling clothing, decorative china and glassware, kitchenalia, collectibles and much more, and there will be a vintage tearoom. Tristan Darby will explain why, from sherry in Shakespeare to fine wines in modern classics, drinks have always had a place in literature. People attending the event on June 21 at the Hamptons Deli in Chipping Sodbury High Street will be able to taste the wines and other drinks that Tristan highlights. Tristan is drinks columnist for The Bath Magazine and the Bristol Magazine, and is a judge for both the Bristol and Bath Good Food Awards. Burglars jailed after raid on village hall TWO burglars have been jailed after being convicted of offences in Emersons Green including a break-in at the village hall. Craig Walters, 35, of Ashley Road, Bristol, and Lee Hucker, 32, of The Hawthornes, Staple Hill, were both sentenced to four years and six months at Bristol Crown Court. Walters admitted five counts of burglary and one count of aggravated vehicle taking while Hucker admitted two counts of burglary and was found guilty of a third count following a trial. All the offences happened in the Emersons Green area between January 22 and 23. Walters committed one of the offences at The Mill House pub following which he stole an Audi A4 – but he was spotted by a member of staff who later picked

him out at an ID procedure. Walters and Hucker committed offences together, including a break-in at Emersons Green Village Hall in which they were caught on CCTV and identified by a PCSO from the
neighbourhood team. The pair also broke into a home where they stole jewellery but were seen to leave the property by a member of the public, who was also able to identify them at an ID procedure.
Investigating officer Carl Spicer said: “ “We know burglaries have a devastating impact on victim’s lives so identifying offenders and bringing them to justice is a priority for us. “Offences are often a challenge to investigate with offenders becoming more aware of how to avoid detection – but in this case a combination of hard work from neighbourhood officers, vigilant members of the community and forensic/CCTV evidence have helped catch these two serial burglars. “Both Walters and Hucker are ‘third strike’ domestic burglars so I hope these sentences will help rehabilitate them and act as a warning to others that offences like this can attract jail terms.”

Nature haven is springing back to life
A GROUP set up to protect Blackhorse Pond has continued to make progress. Neighbours began to raise concerns that the pond, near Blackhorse Primary School, was drying up in late 2016. The ‘Protect Our Pond’ campaign was started by resident Liz Foster-Hall, with the aim of restoring the pond, helping wildlife to thrive and providing a place for families to feed the ducks. Two public meetings took place, and South Gloucestershire Council pledged support. However, despite the council carrying out works to cut down trees around the pond during spring 2017, the pond dried up completely. The group arranged for work such as foliage management, wildflower sowing, and bulb and orchard tree planting to take place in the Blackhorse open space before Christmas, with the aim of attracting wildlife back
to the area and reinstating the pond. As a result of this work, fresh water mussels were found in the pond bed, kingfishers have also been spotted and a safe
haven was also created for the nesting birds. Since then, a chair, treasurer and secretary have also been appointed to the campaign
group’s committee, and they are planning to meet with Helen Black from CVS South Gloucestershire, a group set up to support the area’s voluntary and community sector. They have also secured support and funding from the council’s employment support team for 12 hours to help them find out where they can put in applications for grants, and a new viewing barrier has been installed by the pond too. In addition, the pond has had some further work undertaken by the council, including the trimming back of trees. Campaign founder Liz Foster-Hall told the Voice: “As the months move on, the group is looking forward to seeing the wild flowers area and orchard trees that were planted in the winter spring into life.” Blackhorse Pond, above left, pictured last month, and the tree-planting, right

n ON THE BEAT
Layers of security are key to peace of mind BIKES, tools, sports kit, gardening equipment and even food are among the items we’ve had reported from sheds and garages. We don’t always make sure they’re as secure as they should be. It might be better to have any lock rather than none: but think how much it would cost to replace all the items in your shed or garage. It’s worth investing in the best quality lock and door fittings that you can afford – check out www. soldsecure.com for ratings on security products independently tested by locksmiths. Thieves don’t like to draw attention and are generally looking for the easiest option. Install motion-sensing lights (solarpowered products are available) and fit a ‘shed alarm’ to make breaking in noisy and conspicuous. If you’ve got an ‘up and over’ garage door, secure it with a padlock or bolt through the
runners, or a custom lock. “Layered” security is a good idea – secure your boundaries using thorny plants, trellis-topped fences and locked gates, make it difficult to get into your shed or garage, and then lock items such as bikes and ladders to a ground anchor and keep tools in a secure box bolted to the ground. Joining Neighbourhood Watch deters thieves because they know neighbours are looking out for one another and will report suspicious incidents. If you hear sounds of intruders in a garden, or a shed alarm, look outside, if it’s safe to do so. If you see someone call 999 straight away. If you can see damage or other obvious signs of a break-in, ring 101 immediately. There’s more advice on our website, www.avonandsomerset. police.uk PC James Rochford

n COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION We’ve relaunched our website Since we launched our website last October, there’s been a lot of work going on behind the scenes to make it even better. We’re very excited to announce that our website has now been fully upgraded and has lots of swanky new features including an improved News page, and better information about LGCA. We’re also working on improving the information we have about the Community Centre ahead of its opening in the coming months. A big thank you to our volunteers who have made this happen – especially Mark, who has spent many hours working on the new design and getting it all up and running! You can find our website here: www. lydegreenca.org School Square is open! We’re really pleased that after months of hard work and regular discussions, School Square is finally open! Beating the bounds PEOPLE in Lyde Green are being invited to learn more about the common land by walking its boundaries. A “Beating the Bounds” walk is taking place on Sunday May 6 to mark Rogationtide, a tradition that dates back more than a thousand years in which communities literally beat their boundaries with willow sticks. (They used to use children’s heads too, but this custom will not be followed!) Organisers hope to have clerics and dignitaries leading the procession and local commons and nature experts. The fun will start at 2.30pm at the Lyde Green Common entrance off Howsmoor Lane, Lyde Green. The walk will set off at 3pm - it will be a fairly slow walk of around 1.5 miles, and will be followed by a picnic at about 4-4.30pm.

n PETER'S VISION PERSPECTIVE - it’s one of the many great words in the English language. I will, though, be careful writing about the English language. It’s something I respect, but often view with an air of suspicious awe and usually from a safe distance - say two or three pages of abbreviated clinical notes! If I were to ask your perspective on eye care & vision, you may think it an odd choice of words. However, I’m not one to be easily put off. So let me tell you ours; our way of looking at eye care which my family has honed over almost eighty years of caring for the eyes & vision of our patients. It’s simple really, we believe each of you deserves thorough & in-depth eye care as well as having your questions or concerns both listened to and where ever possible, answered! When it comes to vision, again simple really. We just want you to have the clearest vision that you can. We now regularly design our patients’ bespoke spectacle lenses, which are lenses as unique
Perspective: a way of looking as your fingerprint. After carefully listening to you, we design the lens around your individual visual needs. Why? Well not only just because we can, but because having a lens designed to suit your individual visual needs actually does give you clearer, more natural vision. If this sounds like the spectacle lens for you, then you can have a bespoke lens whether you use single vision glasses, varifocals or many of our other lens choices. You can also have bespoke lenses that darken with the sun, designed specifically for driving or for viewing things near to you such as a tablet, computer or hobbies & crafts. Nice idea you may think but gosh that all sounds expensive - well we’ve covered this too. A bespoke lens can be yours for the price of a standard lens from another supplier, yes it really can! You can also have a second pair half price.

From our perspective, it’s important to give you the time you need when we help you choose glasses that not only make you look & feel great but also fit comfortably. I have seen people take longer to choose their pizza toppings than their glasses! This surprises me when you think that we often wear our glasses for at least one to two years, where as a pizza often does not last even the 15 minutes it takes some people to choose one! (Admittedly choosing a pizza topping is an an important decision, but 15 minutes, surely that’s just indecisive?). We’d love to hear your
perspective on your eyes & vision so come on in. What’s stopping you? To book an extended eye exam for yourself or those you love, please call 0117 962 2474 or 0117 965 4434. Appointments can also be booked via our website, or you are very welcome to pop in to our practices in Henleaze or Fishponds and say Hi! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Court tells owner to complete work
A DOWNEND man has been ordered to pay more than £2,000 and told to complete work on an empty property in Winterbourne. Keith Bannerman, 61, of Blackhorse Road in Downend, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice (CPN) under the anti-social behaviour crime and policing act 2014. He was prosecuted by South Gloucestershire Council for failing to comply with the notice, connected to a property in Sandstone Rise. A Remedial Order was issued by the court, stating that Bannerman must complete the work, as scheduled in the CPN, by 28 May 2018. Any breach would be considered under contempt of court. He was also handed a conditional discharge
for 12 months. The prosecution at Bristol Magistrates' Court related to an unfinished new build house (where work had started by 1996). The property had been abandoned and left empty since before 2012, with prominent and unsightly scaffolding left in place, plus overgrown untidy gardens, that were causing detriment to the local community. A CPN was served on Mr Bannerman, requiring him to complete the external works, tidy the land and remove the scaffolding by 20 September 2017. None of the work, aimed to improve the external appearance, was ever started and the condition is still deteriorating. The notice also provided for ongoing maintenance of the property and the land, to prevent further recurrences.
Cricket coach Andrew King, from Emersons Green, raised £2,500 for the charity Get Kids Going, which provides sports wheelchairs for disabled children and young people by completing the London Marathon. The sum was matched by St James’s Place for the St James’s Place Charitable Foundation. Andrew finished the run in 4 hrs 1 min and 32 secs. He said: “I see children who are fortunate to be able to play the wonderful game of cricket , but I really wanted to raise some money to help disabled children and young people to get going.”

Tadpole rescue mission success RESIDENTS came to the rescue after frogspawn was discovered in a large muddy puddle in Lyde Green. Twenty volunteers, including many children, scooped up hundreds of tadpoles and transferred them to the shallows of the Folly tributary lake, just off Jenner Boulevard. The mercy mission was organised by Lyde Green Open Space, a new group that aims to protect and improve the green spaces in the area. Cate Biggs, from the group, said: “We’re looking forward to seeing our froggy friends hopping about when they’re bigger! She explained that the rescue had to be set up at short notice before the puddle, on Howsmoor Lane next to the entrance to Lyde
Green Park, dried up. “We couldn’t get all the tadpoles as there were so many, but we hope we’ve managed to rescue a good proportion of them to improve their chances of survival. A big thank you to everyone who came along to help. It was wonderful to see so many people come out to support wildlife conservation.” Lyde Green Open Space group will also be working on promoting gardening activities, improving play areas, and protecting the common land. Members are taking part in the Royal Horticultural Society’s “It’s Your Neighbourhood” scheme and have assessments in July.

WILD AT HEART NOT only do you get to have adventures weekly and in the dark at winter nights (AWESOME!!!!!!!) yet you also learn stuff without knowing you are e.g making a wood cookie, build a campfire, make a den. You get first-hand experience with Mother Nature. So, say you were abandoned in a forest, you would be able to identify which tree (hazel) could be used to make a bow or which fungi (King Alfred's cakes) is flammable. Forest School, in my opinion, is better than video games because why be there on Minecraft breaking wood, building swords and bows when you could actually be in the woods doing it. In my years of Infants (Y1 and Y2) I used to come home grumpy as hell. When I came back from forest school I was a totally different boy. I would be smiling, I would be

SHORTWOOD VILLAGE WI
Saturday 19th May Sunday 20th May
HELLO, I am introducing Shortwood Village WI to you all. We are a friendly bunch of ladies and we meet on the second Thursday of the month behind Shortwood Chapel, which is easy to find in the middle of the village on Main Road. This month we had a very interesting and inspiring talk by Lewina, who is one of our members. She spoke all about her
very colourful early life singing and dancing and also many years in amateur dramatics as an actor, choreographer and producer. Most of us did not realise we had a talented thespian in our midst. As always, this was followed with the usual cuppa, biccy and a catch up chat and also a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” for the members with birthdays in April and May. The May meeting will be a discussion about the ‘Resolutions’ followed by a quiz. This always brings out our competitive side and is great fun. Our next social event is “Tea on the Lawn” at the beginning of June and the chosen charity this year is the Wallace and Gromit Appeal. If you would like to join us for a free taster our next meeting is 10 May at 7.30pm. and we would love to see you. For more details please contact charles@ccce.demon.co.uk. Lynne

1. Create two identical shapes from your outer and lining fabrics. First measure and draw on your fabric an oblong measuring 3.5 x 8 inches, marking every 3 inches with a pencil/tailors chalk up each long side of fabric, leaving 2 inches of length left. Using a glass or bowl as a circular template, round off the top 2 inches of the oblong using your pen/tailors chalk. Cut out your shapes, as well as a small piece of fabric measuring 1 inch x 2 inches.
5. Take your small piece of fabric and sew the long edges together creating a tube. Turn right side out. Now, with the lining fabric facing you and ensuring that the folded over edge is facing inwards, fold the front of the purse up and pin in place on one side. Place your keyring fob ring onto the small tube of fabric created, fold over and place in between the layers on the opposite sides of the purse. Pin in place.

n SPORT AFC Mangotsfield came out on top of this hard fought GFA Junior Cup Final against local rivals Yate Ath at Oaklands Park, Almondsbury winning 2-0. On a blustery evening, not conducive to playing good football AFC Mangos found themselves defending for much of the game but a great defensive play led by goalkeeper Jordan Ridd kept Yate at bay, in fact it was much of a stalemate until mid way through the second half when substitute Liam Bamford hit a terrific ball across the goal for top scorer Dan Coles to smash in from eight yards. Mangotsfield dug in deep as Yate piled on the pressure and ten minutes from time scored a second, Sam Futcher chased a great through ball by Ben Russell and a mix up between defender and keeper was able to slot the ball home and a complete a well deserved win for The Mighty Mangos. n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE
Don't let sunshine trip you up Blog 51 – The perils of flip flops THE sunshine has finally hit the UK!!! Bring on the vitamin D! The memory of the long dismal winter that we had is soon a thing of the past after a couple of hot days. Ok I don’t want to be a flip flop hater but a couple of years ago when Harry was only just born I was jogging back into a holiday apartment in Lanzarote to get another soft drink (beer) when I caught the tip of my flip flop on the step and broke my toe. Who knew that a broken toe is more painful than child birth…admittedly childbirth is still beyond me but it hurt so much that it must be true… When it’s warmer, it’s normal that you ditch the shoes and boots in favour of lighter options. Flip flops are always a firm favourite, but are you aware of the damage that they can cause to your feet? Women especially are guilty of thinking that flip flops are a safer alternative to heels, but this is unfortunately not the case, as flip-
flops can cause your foot to strain in order to keep them in place. Gripping with your toes to keep flip flops on, causes a lot of tension and pressure through your toes and arches. This can lead to straining of tendons and ligaments and cause conditions such as plantar fasciitis; inflammation of the tendons that stretch from the ball of your foot to your heel. Research has also shown that, as a flip flop wearer, you probably do not bring your toes up as much during your leg’s swing phase, resulting in a larger ankle angle and shorter stride length. This repeated motion can result in problems from your feet up into your hips. If you’re a flip flop wearer, you may also experience shin splints – an acute pain in the front of the lower leg. Due to thin soles and a lack of arch support, you may find that you suffer with an excessive rolling in of your foot, otherwise known as over-pronation. This leads to increased pressure on your shins and an increased risk of ankle sprains.
CARSONS & Mangotsfield CC are looking forward to the season starting this month and have moved their training sessons to Pomphrey Hill having completed indoor nets at Mangotsfield School. The club will again run three Saturday teams in the Bristol & District League and one Sunday team in the North Somerset League. Training sessions will be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights for Seniors and all new players are welcome.
The most foot-friendly type of shoe for women would be those with a small heel, preferably oneand-a-half inches high. For men, look for a slightly wedge-shaped sole. This helps to avoid straining your calf, which can occur in shoes that are too flat. Wearing shoes with more secure straps is also good idea. Flip flops can easily fold under your foot or get caught in the ground, creating a trip hazard. For these reasons, it’s considered dangerous to drive wearing this flimsy style of shoe. If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms that we’ve described, don’t hesitate to book an appointment so that we can help you correct the issue. If you know any other flip flop wearers, share this article so they can avoid the experience of childbirth- like pain in your toe. For the Mollyettes I am pleased to say that through perseverance and sheer luck at times, we have managed to help her reach her fourth birthday this month. I can’t believe where the time has gone!

Molly shares her birthday with my late Granny (whom she was named after) and the Queen, so she will be in good company on the 21st April. I wonder if the Queen is having a Fairy AND a Pony party?
