You won’t beat us BOSSES of a football club attacked by arsonists have sent out a defiant message to the culprits - we will not be beaten. The fire, at Blackhorse Sports and Community Association’s pavilion in Dibden Lane, tore through a disused wooden water tower and damaged the roof, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage. Club secretary Pete Brown said he has been inundated with support from members of Mangotsfield Junior FC and AFC Mangotsfield with everyone willing to give time and money to get the club back on its feet as soon as possible. “The next day we had a dozen volunteers down at the site clearing away the debris,” Pete said. “All our senior managers and players wanted to come up to the club to lend a hand instead of training. They were all willing to have a go. My phone didn’t stop ringing. The response from parents and everyone involved with the club has been fantastic and they are doing everything they can to push us on. Continued on page 2

Arsonists won’t stop us playing football From page 1 “We’re hoping to get everything ready to play on Saturday. We’re very determined people here at the club and this certainly won’t stop us.” A total of six teams from the juniors and five from the senior club, with many members from Emersons Green, are based at the ground in Dibden Lane, with around 20 other teams playing at Pomphrey Hill and Badminton Road. Pete, who has been secretary for 20 years, said the latest attack on the pavilion is just one in a long string of incidents at the teams’ 1960s base. “We’ve had the lease for three years, in which time we’ve had loads of trouble with vandalism, graffiti, drugs and people getting on to the flat roof to break the water tower. I’ve had my car vandalised in the car
park after confronting a couple of teenagers. It’s an ongoing problem but this latest incident is serious - it could have burned the whole building down.” The fire broke out around 6pm on Monday October 22. One of the team managers alerted Pete, who dashed down from his home in Staple Hill. “It only took me a few minutes but by the time I got there, the place was well alight. There were about three fire engines there,” he said. “I thought the whole place was going to go up, as there were a lot of flames coming from it. “I realised it was just the housing around the old water tower but there was still a massive danger of the whole flat roof, which is on top of all the changing rooms and showers, being burned down. It was only

n NEWS thanks to the fire brigade for being so quick that this didn’t happen.” Pete said he was waiting for repair quotes to come in: “About half the flat roof needs to be repaired and there’s smoke and water damage but just guessing I would estimate it to cost around £5-6,000.” Club chairman Colin Sutton immediately set up a Crowdfunding page in a bid to raise £5,000 to help with the repair bill. “This act of malicious criminal damage could potentially ruin the football environment of 100s of boys, girls, seniors and volunteers at the club. It is also used for vital community groups during the week,” he said on the page. Donations, along with messages of support, have already been flooding in. “This is a tragedy for the youngsters who go there every week and an act of small mindedness from the person(s) who did this,” wrote one supporter who donated £50.
“Best of luck in raising your target and more. As a parent of a Mini Mango our little boy was distraught to hear of this,” another said. One woman said: “As a football fan I can only imagine how devastating this is to everyone involved with the club.” Planned fundraising quiz and race nights have been cancelled because of the strong smell of smoke but will be rescheduled as soon as possible. “A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue said two crews from Temple and Kingswood fire stations were called in shortly after 6.15pm to tackle the fire, which was being treated as a suspected arson attack. The spokesperson said: “Two firefighters in breathing apparatus used two high pressure hose reels and one 45mm jet to extinguish the fire. “The cause is thought to be deliberate.” An Avon and Somerset police spokesperson appealed for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

n NEWS LYDE Green residents are getting into the spirit of Halloween again by signing up to a spooky trail for trick-or-treaters. The trail was first staged last year, when more than one in every ten households across the development took part. As the Voice went to print more than 60 homes had already signed up to get involved in the event.
Lyde Green children set for a spooktacular time This year’s trail was organised by Lyde Green resident Cate Biggs and her partner, Mark. For the first time, this year’s trail also includes a “blue pumpkin” route indicating homes where people are prepared to provide alternative, non-food treats for children with allergies and other special needs. The alternative treats can include a small toy, stickers, a pencil, or bubbles. The Halloween trail was set to take place from 4.30pm until 8.30pm on October 31, with residents set to decorate their houses with pumpkins and themed decorations, such as cobwebs and skulls, in order to let families and trick-or-treaters know that it is OK for them to knock. The idea is to ensure that

88 new homes planned for Lyde Green TWO housebuilders have submitted a planning application for 88 new homes in the next phase of development at Lyde Green. Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon Homes have submitted a planning application to South Gloucestershire Council to demolish the buildings around the Grade II-listed White House Farm farmhouse on Howsmoor Lane and build a selection of houses. These will range from one-bedroom apartments to five-bedroom homes, as well as 24 affordable homes and 200 parking spaces. The Lyde Green consortium has plans to build more than 2,000 homes across the development, and the application is the next phase at the 2.6-hectare site. Steve Roche, managing director of Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, said: “The landscape of Emersons Green is changing as we bring muchneeded homes, including
apartments and first-time buyer homes through to large family homes. “South Gloucestershire Council’s Local Plan identifies the housing need as 28,550 dwellings up to the year 2027. The development at Lyde Green is integral in delivering enough new homes to meet the needs of the growing number of people looking to buy, providing a range of market and affordable housing. “Demand for homes at Lyde Green has been high since the day we launched. This next phase will form part of the larger community being created, where as a part of the consortium, Persimmon Homes has built one primary school, with future plans for a second primary school, secondary school and local centre.” A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey Bristol said: “The jointapplication proposal for 88 new dwellings at Lyde Green will meet the continued demand for

Museum's look at life on home front
FRENCHAY Village Museum is staging an exhibition to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War. The temporary exhibition, called Ministering Angels: VAD Nurses from Frenchay, tells the story of local women who devoted their time to aiding recovering servicemen at Cleve Hill Hospital in Downend. It promises to explore the relationships formed between patients and nurses, their lives and motivations, as well as how war affected people in Frenchay, commemorating the men who fought in it what people at home did to help with the war effort. A uniform, autograph book and other items which belonged to Frenchay women who worked as Voluntary Aid Detachment nurses will be on display at the museum in Begbrook Park. Photos from the period, including portraits of nurses and
Nurses of the Voluntary Aid Detachment and wounded soldiers at Cleve Hill Hospital in Downend during the First World War servicemen and images which capture the interiors of the hospital, day to day activities and the camaraderie which existed, are included in the exhibition, along with letters home from soldiers at the front. The changing role of women in society, as they became more
active in the workforce and leaders in the war effort at home, will also be explored in the exhibition. As a part of the exhibition, which runs from October 31 until January 30, there will be a new children’s activity in the museum for visiting families.

Call for community to support Lyde Green pupils A GROUP of parents are calling on the community to support them as they try to benefit pupils at Lyde Green Primary School. The primary school started running in temporary buildings in September 2015. Following the opening of the school’s building in September 2016, a group of parents, carers and teachers got chatting and decided to get together to organise some extra activities for pupils. After forming a committee with four elected members, the Friends of Lyde Green Primary School started organising events for the children at the school. Since March 2017, when the school only had two classes initially, they have held a cake sale which raised £100, several movie nights, discos, and they also organised an ice lolly sale at the end of the school year. More recently, the Friends held a quiz night at the school on Saturday October 13. For £10 per head, teams could come along with their own drinks, enjoy a curry courtesy of local Indian caterers Bojan, and answer eight rounds of questions with the chance of winning a cash prize. 54 people attended the event overall, including a mixture of parents, teachers and local residents, and a range of sweet treats were also donated by local bakers The Green Bakery, which raised £55 for the group. Vicki Woods is the Chair of The Friends of Lyde Green
Friends of Lyde Green quiz night Primary School, and has lived in the estate since June 2015 with her husband and two daughters, who attend the school in years 1 and 2. Speaking about the work of the group and the reasons why the local community should support them, Vicki said: “The overall aim of our group is to benefit the children of Lyde Green Primary School – it’s at the heart of everything that we do. “With all of the events that we organise, we’re always very aware of costs and the potential impact on parents’ pockets, as well as the need to run things that children would like to do. As the school has grown in size, we’ve seen our movie nights
and discos get more and more popular, and we’re really grateful to all of our volunteer parents and teachers, as well as K&M’s Disco for helping to make them so successful. “We want the school to be
the best school it can be, and would love the local community to support us and our upcoming events. In 2019 or 2020 we are also hoping to run a really big event for the community where everyone will be welcome - more details to follow soon!” In terms of future events, the Friends have organised a Halloween disco for years one, two and three, a “Halloween happy hour” craft session for the reception children, and they are also looking forward to their second Christmas tree sale in School Square on Saturday December 8 from 10am to 5pm. The group want to build up Lyde Green Primary School’s library and are currently looking for donations of books that are interesting and relevant for children. To find out more about The Friends of Lyde Green Primary School and their upcoming events, visit the Friends of Lyde Green Primary School Facebook page.

Removal man dumped rubbish in lane A RUBBISH removal man who dumped waste in a lane in Pucklechurch has been ordered to pay more than £1,000 in fines and costs. South Gloucestershire Council prosecuted Liam Budds, 24, of Wick High Street, after fly-tipped waste at Redford Lane was traced back to one of his customers. Paperwork from an address in Kingswood was found at the Pucklechurch site and another fly tip in Ham Lane, Wick. The council said it environmental protection officers visited the Kingswood householder, who had paid Budds to remove it. They then interviewed Budds, who claimed that he was in an informal business arrangement with another man and that they jointly owned the vehicle used to take the rubbish away from Kingswood. He admitted driving the
vehicle on the day and loading the waste onto the vehicle, with the householder’s help. He was paid £70 to dispose of it. The council said in a statement: “Budds accepted that he was part-owner of the vehicle, was paid to remove the waste and had a duty of care regarding the proper disposal of the waste, but claimed that he had not fly tipped it.” Budds claimed the co-owner of the van was no longer in the UK. At Bristol Magistrates’ Court on October 10 Budds admitted that he did not have the correct paperwork for transporting waste. He was found guilty of a failure in his duty of care for not having a waste transfer note and was fined £200, along with a £30 Victim Surcharge and costs of £930, totalling £1,160. A spokesperson said: “Do not be tempted to use people offering
cheap waste clearance on sites such as Facebook and Gumtree unless you have confirmed that they are registered with the Environment Agency.” Check whether the waste carrier is registered by calling the Environment Agency on 08708 506506 or visiting bit. ly/2hxp5EQ online. Ask for a registered trading address and contact telephone
number for the trader and get a receipt. Unwanted goods and household or garden waste can all be disposed of at no cost via the council’s Sort It centres, which are open from 8.30am to 4.30pm, seven days a week. You can report fly tipping to the council at southglos.gov.uk/ flytipping

n NEWS A NURSERY set up a year ago by three sisters from Pucklechurch has been praised by the education watchdog. Ofsted visited Buckingham Gardens Day Nursery in Downend in September and its report rated the nursery, which has 17 staff and more than 120 children on its roll, good in all areas. It was the first ever inspection since the nursery was registered in October last year by Georgina, Harrie and Billie Bristow, who grew up in Pucklechurch. Nurseries are assessed in four areas: leadership and management; quality of teaching, learning and assessment; personal development, behaviour and welfare, and outcomes for children. Inspector Dominique Allotey said standards in all four areas were good. She said: "Staff plan a stimulating range of outdoor opportunities for children in the attractive and inviting garden. This motivates children of all ages in their learning, particularly those who prefer to learn outdoors."

Proud day for young nursery The inspector said maths teaching was “strong”, as were partnerships with parents. She added: “Staff keep parents well informed about their child's progress and work with them to meet children's individual care needs.” Ms Allotey said all children at the nursery, including those with special educational needs or disabilities, made good progress in all areas of learning. She said: “They have good opportunities to be independent learners. Staff are consistent in their expectations and use positive teaching techniques to promote good behaviour.” Nursery manager Georgina Bristow said: “We are really happy with our Ofsted report and very proud of how far our nursery has come in its first year. “My sisters and I were so pleased that the inspector could see the homely and caring environment that we try so hard to create for the children, as well as the strong bonds between the

n NEWS A TEACHER at Ashfield prison has won an award for his “undying positive energy” in helping inmates to learn. Andrew Morris is head of student services at the Category C jail in Pucklechurch, which holds up to 400 sex offenders. His work – from teaching inmates to read up to supporting them through Open University degrees – has been recognised by the Prisoner Learning Alliance, which has given him a national award. Andrew has taught at HMP Ashfield, which is managed on behalf of the Ministry of Justice by Serco, for 12 years. He started as a PE teacher, and then went into information advice and guidance services. Andrew works with learners on every level: he runs a literacy programme with charity Shannon Trust to give prisoners one-on-one support in learning to read, and has also developed his own beginners’ Maths programme. He is also supporting 35 learners through Open University degrees.

Andrew’s award for positive effect on prisoners He said: “The highlight of my job is seeing students actually achieve when they didn’t think they could. You get them started on learning to read, and work up from there. “People get passionate after a while, and take control of it themselves. Orderlies who work for me, my passion rubs off on them. Then they’re always coming up with new ideas, and talking to the rest of the learners about how to make education better.” Andrew’s nomination came from fellow members of staff at the prison. It read: “He is approachable, has a persistent smile and is the epitome of happiness. He has undying positive energy and has undoubtedly turned many prisoners’ dark days into positive
ones.” Andrew was handed the award at the PLA’s fourth annual awards ceremony, recently held at Manchester Metropolitan University as part of the its annual conference. The awards are unique, with all nominations coming from people in prison for staff and mentors making a real difference in prison education. This year the PLA received a record 1,300 nominations, over three times more than last year. There were 15 winners across five categories, including outstanding teachers and education staff, officers, peer mentors, individuals, and staff working in the young people’s estate. Crimes going under the radar in Rodway ward POLICE are not getting a true picture of crime and anti-social behaviour in Staple Hill and Mangotsfield because many incidents are not being reported. A meeting held to discuss residents’ concerns, held days after a vandal attack on a playground in Page Park, was told that recorded crime in the area was down 11 per cent on last year. But it also heard about problems police and council anti-social behaviour teams were unaware of. They included several incidents involving a gang of youths on bikes, riding dangerously on the streets and intimidating pedestrians, which had not been reported. About 30 residents from across Staple Hill and Mangotsfield came to the meeting at the Salvation Army in Broad Street. Councillors from South Gloucestershire’s Staple Hill and Rodway wards attended, along with representatives from groups including Friends of Page Park and youth group the You Foundation. They raised a wide variety of concerns over issues including speeding, graffiti, vandalism, intimidation, flyposting and thefts from gardens by scrap metal collectors. The meeting was chaired by Staple Hill ward councillor Ian Boulton. Joining him on the panel were Staple Hill police beat manager PC Huw Williams and Mark Pullin, stronger safer communities manager for South Gloucestershire Council, who is in charge of a council team
tackling anti-social behaviour. Mr Boulton said the area did not have the scale of problems that had led to dispersal orders being introduced to move on potential troublemakers in previous years. There was a definite perception of problems, which had probably been “amplified” by social media, said the councillor. But he added: “People just aren’t reporting it - if it’s a concern to you, then report it.” Residents complained of problems getting through on the police 101 non-emergency line, and several said they believed cuts to police budgets meant officers had their “hands full” already. One resident said: “I report less because nothing happens when I do.” PC Williams acknowledged that there were sometimes delays getting through on the phone but urged residents to persevere, adding: “Putting it on Facebook
isn’t reporting it to the police.” Mr Pullin said the council’s anti-social behaviour team looked at and responded to every
report it received but said it had had no reports of problems from Page Park logged on its system since April.
Who you should contact, and when ONE of the main issues at the meeting was confusion over which kind incident should be reported to police and which to the ASB team, when to use the 999 emergency number and when to use 101. 999: If you see a crime taking place, can see a suspect nearby or there is a danger to life or threat of violence, call 999 for an emergency response. 101: If you are reporting a crime after it has happened and do not need an emergency response, call 101. Crime can also be reported on the avonandsomerset.police.uk website. Anti-social behaviour team: If you want to report graffiti or have concerns over anti-social behaviour in your area, call South Gloucestershire Council on 01454 868582 or email asbreporting@southglos.gov.uk Police beat team: The Staple Hill beat team holds Angels vDance's Guardian community beat surgeries every Wednesday. Theafter next qualifying ones are at are pictured the Bean Tree cafe in Page Park on October November 7 and for next31, year's European 21, and Staple Hill Community Hub championships on November 14 and 28.

n NEWS FROM OUR MP
I
Chris Skidmore writes for
Emersons Green Voice
N politics there are often instances where local issues and campaigns become so significant that they succeed in gaining national attention, providing a platform to help local campaigners spread important messages to Government and policymakers. As local residents know, this was the case with the ‘Justice 4 Ross & Clare’ Campaign, which received overwhelming support locally at first, and then nationally, leading to a government commitment to change to the law on dangerous driving. We are now seeing this happen again with the campaign for mandatory autism and learning disability training for healthcare professionals. This campaign is the result of a remarkable effort on the part of a local resident and mother, Paula McGowan. Paula has tirelessly been working to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with learning disabilities ever since the tragic death of her son Oliver McGowan, who tragically died in Southmead in November 2016, aged just 18. Paula’s petition, started in Oliver’s memory, has now reached more than fifty thousand signatures and was recently debated in Parliament at the end of October. I was honoured to take part in that crucial debate and to pay tribute to the work Paula and other local families are doing on the issue. As a local man and the local MP, I was keen to make sure Paula’s voice was clearly heard. I was very pleased to be able to represent the hundreds of Kingswood residents who signed Paula’s petition and to call for change and improvement in the care people with autism and learning disabilities receive in a healthcare environment. I firmly believe it
Chris Skidmore MP speaking on Oliver McGowan’s death, watched by Oliver’s mother, Paula, second from left in front row of seats” is unacceptable that one in four doctors and nurses has never had any type of training on learning disability, and have asked the Government to ensure this will be a turning point in how we treat those with autism and learning disabilities in the NHS. I also called on the Minister to meet with Paula to discuss Oliver’s campaign as soon as possible and will continue to offer any support I can. I was proud to speak in Parliament as Paula’s representative, and I know what she was able to accomplish so far is truly remarkable. However, my hope is that we will now be able to build on this success and continue the fight to help prevent further avoidable deaths such as Oliver’s. I will continue to work to support this vital campaign and remain fully committed to supporting Paula and other local residents and families in calling for changes to the law so that what happened to Oliver never happens again.

Film buffs pick international festival winner
FILM buffs from Downend School were given the tough job of picking a winner at an international short film festival. Five members of the school’s Into Film Club were invited to the Encounters Short Film Festival at Bristol’s Watershed centre, to become judges choosing the winner of the festival’s Children’s Jury Award. The Year 9, 11 and 12 students were given VIP treatment as they attended a screening of films that had been shortlisted by Fairfield School in Bristol before the event. The Downend club had shortlisted the previous year’s festival entries. After watching the ten shortlisted entries, by filmmakers from across Europe, America, Iran and Japan, the jury held a discussion before awarding an overall winner. Jane Coulter, of Into Film, said: “Competition was tough but the eventual first place went to Departure, by Aiofe Doyle, an Irish animation that captured the story of an older lady’s departure from loneliness.” An animated comedy about Mexico’s Day of the Dead, Los Dias De Los Muertos, came a very close

Tim who? We profile the Metro Mayor for the West of England, who cut his political teeth in South Gloucestershire WHAT is the point of the Metro Mayor? Tim Bowles may have been a South Gloucestershire councillor but he is now in charge of the regional West of England Combined Authority, or WECA. Mr Bowles accepts that WECA’s name, and his own, may not be on the tip of everyone’s tongue. But with some big announcements expected before the end of the year from WECA on transport and housing across the West of England, there are many reasons for all of us to pay more attention to this 18-monthold authority. In fact, in the past few days he has flexed his muscles in the area of transport, by announcing he will call in the managing director of First Bus, James Freeman, to discuss “cancelled services and unacceptable delays” facing bus commuters across the region.
He is promising to discuss the shortage of drivers, current levels of congestion and the need to continue to work on a regional bus strategy. He has also staged a summit of England’s Metro Mayors, running at the same time as Bristol hosts a Global Parliament of Mayors, at which the regional leaders have called for more devolution and funding. Among those attending the summit are higher-profile national politicians-turned regional mayors, such as Greater Manchester’s Andy Burnham and Dan Jarvis, from Sheffield City Region. He’s not here to do the work done by the three councils that WECA covers – South Gloucestershire, Bristol and Bath & North East Somerset. That means he won’t get involved in the three existing (or almost
existing) Metrobus routes, which were planned by the three councils before WECA came along. Nor will he influence planning applications or dictate exactly how major projects should work. Instead, WECA brings all three council leaders together to make plans for the big issues that affect the region; housing, transport and skills training. Mr Bowles seeks consensus and then goes to Whitehall seeking government approval and funding. He hints that, finally, we may be about to see the fruits of discussions that started since he took office 18 months ago (when incidentally, WECA was a tiny body, with just seven staff. Compared to most public authorities, it’s still small, with just 40 staff which will eventually expand to become 72.) We can expect public
consultation this winter on both the transport and the housing and infrastructure plans. WECA’s Joint Transport Strategy calls for four new Metrobus routes by 2036. One possibility is an orbital route around the city. Mr Bowles will not be drawn on the specifics. “But it’s really important for your readers to know that we are working together on this,” he says. WECA, he insists, has already drawn the promise of hundreds of millions in funding from Whitehall, for plans which the three councils couldn’t have secured individually. “But we aim to find other ways of ribbing more investment,” he says. Mr Bowles is also talking to potential private investors – including, intriguingly, a Japanese rail company he has met the very morning of our

November, 2018 interview. Again, he won’t reveal the project under discussion. But the East Japan Railway Company (EJRC) is one of the biggest rail firms in Japan, operating several of the famous high-speed bullet lines, or Shinkansen, which travel at up to 200mph. We’re unlikely to get one of those – but EJRC also operates the futuristic Tokyo Monorail, to Tokyo’s Haneda airport. And high on the wishlist for transport in the West is a better route to Bristol Airport. WECA’s Joint Transport Study says rail is the preferred option. EJRC has form in the UK, too: it has a 15 per cent stake in West Midlands Trains. “The route to the airport is vital, and the people I was talking to are interested in that,” says Mr Bowles, adding that his visitors were impressed with the speedy rail link from London. “It can help us bring more visitors in to our World Heritage city of Bath, as well as those coming here to work in the aerospace industry on the Northern Fringe, as well as making it easier for South Bristol
folk to get to the new jobs that will be created as the airport expands.” WECA is in talks with the airport and with North Somerset Council, which isn’t part of it but does cooperate. Will the Japanese investors be interested in Marvin Rees’s idea of an underground network that could form part of a rail link to the airport? “That’s not clear, but Marvin and I work very closely, on this and other projects,” says Mr Bowles. One of the metro mayor’s messages to investors is that they will be investing in success, not subsidising a region that needs a handout. “We are the only city region that pays money back to the Treasury,” he says. “Other regions cannot show that level of return. We are not looking for handouts, and we must keep driving that message.” So will Mr Bowles and his new authority soon gain widespread recognition from the public? His critics say he’s failed to make a mark in his first year and a half. A former South

Gloucestershire councillor and ex-chair of Winterbourne parish council, he hasn’t sought the limelight so far in his career. His low visibility is partly a measure of his limited powers and the fact that, so far, WECA has had little direct contact with the public. That’s about to change with the consultation expected to start soon. November and December will see the public consulted on the Joint Spatial Plan, the regional plan for creating 10,000 homes, 82,000 jobs and infrastructure that involves (among other things) using a “modest” 0.65 per cent of the Green Belt around Bristol and Bath. In the New Year there will be a separate consultation on the Joint Transport Strategy, which will also have a big impact on the region. The advantage of having a mayor leading a local authority is that they can be an attentiongrabbing figurehead who can stir debate and get things done. The downside, as Marvin Rees is finding with the Bristol arena, is that the attention can become uncomfortably hot.

Tim Bowles Tim Bowles is about to become the figurehead for the biggest changes to the West region’s landscape and travel facilities for decades. It will take a shrewd operator to steer these changes – many of which are undoubtedly needed – without taking the flak for the less popular plans. Life is about to get very interesting for him.

Recycling surges after black bin cuts REDUCING the size of black bins has led to a 17 per cent cut in the amount of rubbish being thrown away for landfill - and big increases in recycling. Figures for the first five months since South Gloucestershire Council replaced the old 240-litre bins with 140-litre bins show a 3,325-tonne reduction in waste left at the kerbside by households. At the same time the amount of cans and plastic put out for recycling has gone up by 725 tonnes: an increase of 42 per cent. Food waste left out for weekly collections has increased by more than a third, with an extra 903 tonnes picked up since April. The amount of cardboard, textiles and glass being recycled in kerbside collections has also gone up since April, the council says, by 174 tonnes (8%), 2 tonnes (5%) and 132 tonnes (5%) respectively. But the amount of paper being recycled fell by 158 tonnes (8%), part of a long-term trend which is seeing people use less paper for letters and reading fewer newspapers. Overall, an extra 1,779 tonnes of recycling has been collected through weekly kerbside collections in the first five months since the bin change: a 16 per cent increase on the same period the previous year.
The area’s overall recycling rate is predicted to be around 51.6 per cent this year, just above the EU recycling target of 50 per cent. Council cabinet member for communities Paul Hughes said: “These are great results and I would like to thank South Gloucestershire residents who have contributed to this success. “It’s particularly good to hear that we have managed to exceed the EU’s target. We have made some great progress with our waste strategy and are working to promote a culture of positive attitudes towards recycling, through the actions and policies that have been undertaken. “The significant reductions in landfill waste being thrown away and the substantial increase in recyclables collected not only provides better value for money for the community, but means we are doing our part to reduce our environmental footprint for our growing population.” The council also distributed more than 3,700 nappy sacks to families with young children and sold 219 reusable nappy kits over the five months covered by the figures. However there have been some reports of people stuffing household waste into on-
Paul Hughes street litter bins since the new domestic bins were introduced. The council has advised anyone who is struggling to with the new collections regime to visit southglos.gov.uk/sortit online or call the council on 01454 868000 for help and advice.

n NEWS FROM THE WI’s BEECHMERE BELLES WI WE all arrived in our comfy clothes for our August meeting of the Beechmere Belles. This was the one we had all been looking forward to: Tai Chi. After an informative introduction, we all took our places and began to follow the smooth flowing movements. Never have we made less noise, mainly because most of us were holding our breath while trying to follow the instructor and not to lose our balance on the turns. We were assured that this is a common thing beginners do, as they are so focused on getting it right. With breathing now being encouraged, we began to relax, the movements felt more comfortable and a rhythm was beginning to form. It was fair to say everybody enjoyed the evening and, as usual, we finished off with tea, coffee and cake - what was not to like? At this point I would like to say that we have had fantastic cakes made by our members this year: gin and tonic, apple crumble loaf
and chocolate fudge tray bake, to name just a few. September was another muchawaited meeting. We were visited by Sean McCormack, one of the Queen’s Body Guard of the Yeomen of the Guard. Along with the history of its beginnings, Sean told us how he stood guard in Westminster Hall within Westminster Palace where the Queen Mother laid in state, how he attends the opening of Parliament, where to this day they still search the cellars - thanks to Guy Fawkes - and many other state occasions. Along with his uniform, photographs and a letter of thanks from the Queen, we were treated to an entertaining insight into the life of a body guard: who knew that under all that smart red uniform was a man wearing stockings and suspenders? As we all turned our calendars to October, there was still plenty to look forward to. The Wills Memorial Building tour was a great success. We got to see the beautiful Great Hall, and were able to sit in Winston Churchill’s chair,
before climbing 345 steps to the top of the Wills tower, stopping on the way to hear the history of Great George, the building’s bell. Standing beside it as it struck 2 o’clock, and feeling the bell vibrate for so long afterwards, was a great experience. We finished the day with refreshments; after all that exercise, we needed to replace our fluids. Thank goodness Park Street has such a good selection of bars, coffee shops and restaurants. The middle of October took us for an evening at Paintpotts in Thornbury, where we spent our time designing and painting our various choices of pottery. A creative bunch we were, in between chatting, drinking coffee and eating cake. Our monthly meeting saw us celebrate the 4th Birthday of The Beechmere Belles. After re-electing senior posts and committee, we got down to the serious business of the fun quiz each team determined to win. The most beautiful cake was made by our very talented secretary, which we all enjoyed with a drink. The November meeting will see us making various Christmas crafts. If anybody would like to come and spend the evening with the friendly and fun Beechmere Belles, we meet every fourth Thursday at Emerson’s Green Village Hall.
was to elect our committee for the coming year. Catherine, our president, reluctantly resigned after doing a magnificent job both forming our group initially and presiding over proceedings for the last eleven years. In that time we have had many hours of education from inspirational speakers, trips to various places of interest and hours of fun within the group at our monthly meetings, including popular and infamous quizzes run by Caroline and Lewina. The nomination and voting process was carried out and rounded off with the mandatory tea and birthday cake, followed by a quiz to get the grey matter working! Jo updated us on our plans for events to take place in 2019, as we are the host group in our area. The November meeting is a talk from Tim Lewis, called Around the World in 80 Days. We meet on the second Thursday of the month, so our next meeting is November 8 and we would love to welcome new members. Our meeting place is behind the chapel in Shortwood, which is on the main road running through our village.

We supported local community events such as St James’ Church Summer, Christmas Fairs and Mangotsfield Festival. In December our chosen charity was the Salvation Army; we donated Christmas gifts. We shared social activities with a number of neighbouring WI’s and supported some of their events. n PETER'S VISION
T
HIS month I am pleased to say I’ve been enjoying the fine morning and evening rides to and from work. It’s sometimes a tad chilly in the morning, I agree, and with the low sun avoiding the glare’s the obvious challenge, but riding home with the sun on your back is such a treat and more than makes up for the early chill. It’s also a visual delight as I have a shiny new pair of Ray-Ban prescription graduated polaroid sunnies to wear while I ride. Yes it’s true! Not only are they Ray-Ban’s but they’re also in my prescription so I can see and (try to) look cool as well. The joy does not stop there though. They’re also glare reducing polaroid and wait there’s more. They are also discretely graduated - meaning that the top of the lens offers full sun protection and the lower part of the lens is a little less tinted so you can also see where you’re going. Win, win win. Obviously I’m chuffed to have glare reducing optical correction that ticks every box and you can too. Just call in for a look and
see what you’ve been missing: Prescription polaroid cuts out the glare when driving, walking out & about and particularly when out on the water. If you’ve been experiencing glare yourself and if you’re around retirement age or in retirement then it could be a sign of cataracts - please don’t worry about this, just book in to see us. It’s a normal part of the changes the human body goes through, and a sure sign of life experience. Otherwise you may experience glare if your vision is out of focus from uncorrected astigmatism or near or far sightedness - obviously we can help you here with glasses. These polaroid sunnies are not much good for computer screens mind, but don’t worry we’ve much clearer lenses to help with indoor glare problems or driving at night. If you’ve ever asked me about these problems I’m sure to have mentioned our contrast enhancer - a lens custom engineered to our specification to significantly improve your vision. Just call in to see for yourself. I’m a huge fan of

Men urged to talk about women’s cancers
OVER 21,000 women in the UK are diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer every year* but awareness of symptoms is still very poor according to leading cancer charities. Now, as a follow on of Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, which ran throughout September, campaigners are calling on people to open up and discuss the subject – and they mean men as well as women. “Cancer doesn’t just affect the person with the disease – it affects everyone connected to that person - that means it is much more than just a ‘woman’s problem’,” according to Mr Amit Patel, a Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynae-oncologist at Spire Hospital in Bristol. “Women and men need to be more aware of what is normal because this is the only way they will be able to tell when something is wrong. As with all cases of cancer the quicker it is detected the better the treatment outcomes,” he added. Mr Patel said: “The lack of basic
knowledge about the female body or conversations around how the female anatomy works, is very worrying – how can we expect what to look out for if we don’t know what is normal and what could be cancer. “A vast medical knowledge is not required to remain healthy. Being aware of and simply taking time to address any symptoms that could be associated with possibility of cancer can prevent or detect cancer at early stages.” The five cancers categorised as gynaecological in order of how common they are: Endometrial Cancer or cancer of the womb: Abnormal vaginal bleeding is the most common symptom. If you have been through the menopause any vaginal bleeding is considered abnormal. If not then ‘unusual bleeding’ may include bleeding between your periods. About 8,475 new cases are diagnosed in the UK every year - most in women aged 40 to 74 who have been through the menopause. Ovarian cancer: The fifth most

common cancer amongst women in the UK with more than 7,000 women diagnosed each year. Because symptoms are not well known or often mistaken for as ‘tummy troubles’ or period pains, it is usually discovered in the late stages when successful treatment is much more difficult. Symptoms that may require assessment include weight loss, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, bloating, and bowel or bladder problems. Women should seek help if any of these symptoms are noticed particularly if they are persistent or progressive. Cervical cancer: Cancer of the cervix (the entrance to the womb from the vagina) often has no symptoms in its early stages. If you do have symptoms, the most common is unusual vaginal bleeding, which can occur after sex, in between periods or after the menopause. Abnormal bleeding doesn't mean that you definitely have cervical cancer, but it should be investigated by your GP as soon as possible. Also taking part in the

cervical screening programme is very effective way of preventing cervical cancer. Cancer of the vulva: The vulva is a woman's external genitals including the lips surrounding the vagina (labia minora and labia majora), the clitoris, and the Bartholin's glands (two small glands each side of the vagina). Symptoms can include a persistent itch, pain, soreness or tenderness in the vulva. You should also look out for ulcer, raised and thickened patches of skin that can be red, white or dark or any lumps or wart-like growths. Vaginal cancer: A rare form of cancer with around 260 new cases diagnosed in the UK each year. The most common symptom of vaginal cancer is abnormal vaginal bleeding although smelly or bloody vaginal discharge, pain during sex or pain when urinating can also be indicators, as can irregular or heavier periods. *Figures from Cancer Research UK

Raid on store
Bags of help from Tesco
BURGLARS damaged the shutters of a Staple Hill supermarket as they tried to force them open in the middle of the night. Police were called after the alarm went off at Iceland in Fountain Court shortly before 2am on October 13. The shutters were damaged and the shop had to delay opening while they were repaired. Avon and Somerset police said there was no sign that the burglars managed to get into the store and nothing was stolen. Police are now appealing for witnesses and information to the incident. Anyone who can help should call 101, quoting crime reference number 5218 229 181, or report information via the Avon and Somerset police website.

More Metrobus woes BRING back the bus passenger's right to purchase a ticket from the driver. When purchasing a ticket from the new Metrobus ticket-machine, if only one small mistake is made the entire purchasing sequence must be repeated. Unfamiliarity with the new system and slow ticketmachines together create far more delays than could ever be caused by passengers paying the driver. Countless newcomers to the area are bewildered, although helpful drivers do mostly come to their rescue. But helping visitors to our area means the driver leaving the bus - causing even more delays. The touch screens are difficult to read in bright sunlight, so why install an electronic system that was never designed for use in such
exposed conditions as those found on the ring-road. What will happen when we get another 'Beast from the East' and layers of snow and ice obscure the screens? Was the public consulted about the new ticketing system? Probably not. Was the public consulted about the long-feared withdrawal of the X48? Probably not. Were local councillors and council officers given an elaborate presentation about the supposed merits and value-for-money of the Metrobus scheme? Probably yes. Michael Ocock Emersons Green BS16 7DG

BMX rider Jensen takes on the older kids A YOUNG BMX rider from Emersons Green is celebrating after his latest achievements in the South West Championship. Ten-year-old Jensen Egan came third in the competition after he competed in an age group above his category, and is now ranked second in the region and third in the south west. Jensen, who is a pupil at Barley Close Community Primary in Mangotsfield, attends weekly training and racing in Patchway from April to September, and monthly in winter. He competes as part of Team Egan with his dad, Jason, and the father and son duo travel throughout the year competing in regional, national and club level races. In 2017 Jensen was crowned South West Champion for the second year in a row, despite competing just weeks after witnessing his dad suffer serious injuries. Jason competed in the 30 and over masters category of the British BMX Championships, and was in podium position when another rider hit his wheel, causing him to fall off and break his hip and leg. Following his accident Jason has spent this year recovering, but has his sights set on getting back to racing in 2019. Outside of his BMX commitments Jensen is interested in football and plays
for his school team, and he also enjoys crazy golf too. Speaking to Emersons Green Voice about his latest achievements, Jensen’s mum Kiri said: “This year Jensen should have been racing in the 11 year old category as he is 11 at the end of year, but he decided to push himself and take part in the 12 year old category instead. Thanks to lots of training and hard work, he came second for the region at the end of season, which is absolutely incredible – he really pulled it out the bag on the day. “I find watching his races nerve-racking at times, as his dad’s accident has had a big impact on all of us, but I’m just so proud of him. He’s also had a bit of an injury this year as he came off his scooter at the skate park and was out of action for a few weeks, so despite not having as many races this year he’s still done amazingly well. “Jensen’s future aim is to take his riding to the European championships and he would also love to take part in the Olympics one day. He will go to senior school next year so things may be a bit different then, but he’s been riding bikes before he could walk so we shall see!” To find out more about Team Egan and to keep up with Jensen’s progress, visit the Team Egan BMX Facebook page.

n TEENAGE VIEW
As the weather gets colder, think of those on the streets This month Layla Dockerty, from Downend, looks at the bleak future for people who will be sleeping rough this winter AS the "coldest winter for 10 years" approaches the UK, many are already preparing to escape the predicted snow and frost with warm clothes and homes, complete with fireplaces and central heating. A lot of people are also looking forward to the possibility of a white Christmas. However, for Bristol's homeless population, this is a very daunting and frightening time. Figures published by the Bristol Post in March 2018 show that council workers found 86 people sleeping rough in the city, a number with which the mayor, Marvin Rees, was "disappointed". However, this is not counting the majority of Bristol's homeless
population who are "sofa surfing" - a temporary solution which isn't always able to keep them off the streets until they get back on their feet, leaving them still very vulnerable. The Guardian reported that at least 78 homeless people died last winter in temporary accommodation and on the streets in the UK, and an even colder winter, predicted this year, would pose an even larger threat. It seems unfair that a country like the UK, which offers free healthcare on the principle that your financial situation shouldn't cost you your life, isn't doing more to protect the well-being of those who are struggling. On the bright side, plans to
open a new overnight homeless shelter in St Anne's for the winter have been approved, despite objections from local residents. Mayor Marvin Rees said: "We are going to have a 24-7 place for people to go that's off the cold streets of Bristol this winter and that should be celebrated. This is a huge relief to those who are at risk of illness from the cold this winter, however there will only be 30 emergency beds in the shelter, which, in addition to the 18 beds provided in the Julian Trust shelter and the 12 beds from the Spring of Hope shelter, makes a total of 60 beds for Bristol's homeless population of around 86, meaning some will still be on the streets.
Whilst it seems obvious, it's really worth taking the time to do whatever we can to help these rough sleepers. Things that we might take for granted can be a huge help for someone facing homelessness this winter. The Julian trust also accepts clothing or food donations, as well as monetary donations, which are also accepted by the Spring of Hope women's' shelter, which is something to consider if you're cleaning out your wardrobe or grocery shopping in preparation for Christmas later this year.

n SPORT AN ASPIRING racing driver from Emersons Green has achieved his goal of a podium finish in the 2018 Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship. As previously reported in the Voice, Matt Parr, who works as a mechanic for Dick Lovett in Cribbs Causeway, started racing two-stroke go-karts when he was 18. After four years, he then moved into sprint racing, where the aim is to drive a road car around a track or circuit in the quickest time possible. In 2017, Matt was offered the chance to do a test in a race car by Grant Motorsport, a team based in Warmley. Following this, he joined the team and was then entered into the 2018 Saloon Car Championship at Castle Combe circuit, which is split into four classes from A to D (depending on the power of the vehicle). Matt races in a specially-modified Citroen Saxo in class D, which he pays to rent and have maintained for him by the team. After testing in February and March of this year, he

Racing driver Matt’s ‘incredible’ rookie season was then put through to race twice in April and May, where he finished second and first in class D, and also achieved the fastest overall lap time in both races. The second half of the 2018 Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship season was a challenging one, with Matt’s team leading their class and the overall championship by just one point. They were in a strong position until round six, when Matt took a hit off the start and broke a driveshaft, which caused the team to lose their overall championship lead and finish third, with the lead in their class. Speaking of the championship and his future ambitions, Matt said: “I finished third overall out of 35 entrants, with six class poles, six class wins and five class fastest laps! I had an incredible
Matt Parr rookie season, and it’s all thanks to my sponsors and team Grant Motorsport for getting me into the grid to show what I could do. “In 2019 I hope to continue racing in the Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship but in a higher class. We have a potentially very good higher class-winning car, and we are currently in discussion with the team and my sponsors to put a budget together for the season.” Matt says his goal for next five years is to get to the Clio Cup for Renault Clios, and he would also like to have more sponsors,
which he can promote on his ‘Matt Parr Racing’ Facebook page. Since it launched, he has had a lot of support from the public with over 700 people following him within just six months, and he hopes to grow this in 2019 and beyond. In addition, his long-term dream is to enter the British Touring Cars Championship, which is the biggest saloon car competition in the country. To keep up to date with Matt’s progress, visit the Matt Parr Racing Facebook page.
New kit for Emersons Green girls A GIRLS’ football team has some new kits for its growing squad thanks to a sponsorship deal. Emersons Green Junior Football Club Under-10’s Girls currently have 23 players over two teams, the Lions and the Tigers. With their old kit now being handed down to the younger teams, James Cullen, the current manager, was looking for a sponsor for their new match kit. He found one in Matthews Estate Agents, whose employees include one of the team’s assistant coaches, James Sheedy, based in Knowle. Mr Sheedy, whose youngest daughter Halle plays for the team, said “It’s important to encourage and support youth football, especially girls’ football, which has grown significantly over the last few years. “New kits are vital as the kids grow and I’m happy to continue to sponsor a growing club, having sponsored two girls’ teams with Emerson Green JFC in the last two years.” Mr Cullen was also looking to get a new training kit for the girls and, after negotiations with Ian Lloyd local sports and workwear

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE
Birthdays and knee pain SO I have just celebrated the biggest birthday of my life…39 years ago my poor mum was put through the mill for another time. After realising that she had finally reached perfection at the second attempt she quit having any more of us and my brother and I started planning how we were going to rule the world. 39? Why is that a big birthday? For me it’s the last year of my 30’s and despite the grey receding hairline I am refusing to acknowledge that I am getting any older! A couple of weeks after a quick break to the Lake District for my big day was the weekend that sits high as the biggest weekend of the year for all chiropractors. The British Chiropractic Association Conference and Award Ceremony. Huge numbers of chiropractors were nominated for the various awards and my associate Jack had made it to the final 3 of Associate of the Year! Alas, under
stiff competition from other keen chiropractors Jack didn’t get the top spot this year but did incredibly well as his story inspired a huge round of applause from his peers. A number of people have asked me if I won anything but sadly I think it could look a bit badly if I was nominated to win an award that I helped to create and then hosted…maybe in the future if I stop some of my dad jokes. I was telling a patient today all about how pleased I was with the ice sculpture I had ordered for the ceremony when she politely put me back on track saying “Yes Tim, that sounds wonderful… about my knee pain”. Ah yes. The patient was a early twenties female personal trainer and class instructor. Unsurprisingly, I treat many fitness trainers as they put their bodies through their paces every day. They are fit and strong but sometimes they just need a little bit of hands on help to take

check by eating healthily but I must do better with exercise. I started playing squash but the people I played with were too busy and it’s no good on your own. Maybe I will join the gym…or even start using the cross trainer that I have at home! So lets all try and stay fit and active for our minds and bodies this winter. Feel free to ask me how my exercise is going when you see me - maybe it will help motivate me to do more!

their pain away. This patient had a common complaint of pain around the front of her knee. She told me that her clients in her spin class noticed that her right knee was bending inwards and she wondered if it was related. It is very likely related to her symptoms. The common misconception in cases like this is that the patient has a weakness. But this doesn’t make sense as she trains everyday. What is more likely is that she has a problem that inhibits her muscles from working properly and allows her knee to bend inwards. We identified a number of inhibited muscles in her back, hip and leg and got to work with some great hands on techniques. After a short time we were able to make those muscles activate again and her one leg squat became pain free. Now a few exercises from our physiotherapists in combination with a couple more treatments to reinforce the work I have done and she will be ok to carry on keeping the rest of the world fit! Not all patients with this pain are this simple but many are. It’s amazing what you can do when you really start looking for the root cause of patient’s pain. Personally I still need to conquer fitness. I am much better at helping people with their injuries than I am at going to the gym myself. I keep myself in

Downend youngsters put up a good fight FIVE boxers from Downend Boxing Club took to the ring when the Harry Crook Centre in Fishponds played host to the Novice National Championships 1st round, and a Somerset and Bristol v Gloucester and Wiltshire mini team match. First up at the event on September 23 was Ashley Banks, boxing in his first contest for two years. In the 69 to 75 kilo class, he drew experienced Frome boxer Jordan Giles. A class contest followed, with both boxers exhibiting a high level of skills and after three rounds, a split decision went the way of the Frome man. Next up was 14-year-old Ollie Clancey, from Emersons Green. In his third contest, he faced the Weston Warriors boxer Jenson Lock. Lock, significantly taller than the local lad, used his height and reach to great effect, while the fearless Clancey stuck doggedly to his opponent. After an action-packed contest the Weston boxer took a points win, which left a happy Ollie pleased with this performance. Sixteen-year-old Jack Oram was up next, representing
Somerset & Bristol as he faced the Gloucester and Wiltshire representative Louis Bacon, of Cheltenham. Bacon began well, behind a long reach, but the better shots came from the evasive Oram, who took a unanimous decision. Taylor Andrews, also 16 and from Downend, was up next, against tough Trowbridge boxer Harry Glover. A nervous first round saw honours even, but in the second and third Taylor adjusted his tactics to long-range boxing, earning him a unanimous points decision. Shea Cantillon, 17, followed in a nervous first contest against Cheltenham's Ashley Stanton. Shea's inexperience showed with a good start, but Ashley knew that bit more, which led to a scrappy contest as the Downend boxer tried to counter his skilful opponent. Shea lost the decision, but said afterwards he is certain to be better as a result of it. A good sporting audience enjoyed fourteen bouts of quality boxing in the centre, which now buzzes with young people's activities.
