Mum: Why I posted video of my daughter being attacked online A MUM says she hopes other parents will tell their children not to stand by and watch someone being bullied after video of an attack on her daughter went viral. Kim Nicholl saw the video, which had been filmed by a bystander, on social media network Snapchat after 14-yearold Chloe was dragged to the ground, punched and kicked
near the Bristol and Bath Science Park. She posted the footage on her own Facebook page as she tried to identify the other girls involved in the incident. But after being inundated with messages, Kim hopes other people can learn lessons from the shocking footage. She wants parents who have seen it to talk to their children about bullying
and anti-social behaviour. Kim said: “I hope that someone will watch it and sit down with their child and explain that if they saw something like this happen, they should not stand back and watch but go and get some help instead.” Full story, page 4

Area is rated the best place to live SOUTH Gloucestershire has been rated the best place to live in England. Property consultants CACI and industry magazine Property Week put the area third in the UK - behind Edinburgh and Aberdeen - and just ahead of Devizes, Harrogate and Bath in their national “hot housing index”. Locations were ranked according to affordability, employment levels, internet connectivity, school provision, public transport access, crime, local amenities and people’s propensity to move from an area. And while South Gloucestershire rated low on affordability and crime, it was given top ratings in three of the other six areas. Bath was sixth, while Bristol was not in the top 50 places to live, because it was found to be an even less affordable place to buy a home. The affordability score is calculated by comparing average house price and average income in an area, and this is then combined with the other “quality of life” data. CACI said South Gloucestershire’s higher rating than Bristol showed living here was a “viable alternative to city-centre living”. Director John Platt said: “Much has been said in the press over recent months about declining house prices. This, coupled with a slight increase in average wages, should see the gulf between income and house price come down, but a large proportion of districts in our ranking still score low on overall affordability.”

New convenience store planned for Lyde Green LYDE Green is set to get its own convenience store, if a new plan is allowed to go ahead. Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has submitted a plan for a single-storey convenience store with a cash machine and 15 customer car parking spaces. It will be located on Willowherb Road, in the vacant land next to the newly opened Lyde Green Community Centre at the top of Thistle Close. The shop floor will be 254 sq m - about the size of a tennis court - with steps and a raised walkway from the car park, where there will be a disabled parking space. Under the plans, deliveries
to the store’s service yard would be undertaken outside peak periods, in order to reduce any impact on customer use of the car park. The planning application is open on South Gloucestershire Council’s website for public comments until November 2. All comments published so far have supported the plan. Resident Joanna Baggs commented: “Let’s hope this gets approved, as this will be a vital resource to Lyde Green. “There are no shops this side of the ring road and to have a shop in walking distance to pick up a few supplies will be invaluable and hopefully cut down on number of car
journeys over to the Emersons Green shopping centre for small purchases.” Elizabeth Davies said: “I hope the planning goes through, to have a convenience store of some sort for the sake of the community members who can’t get about so easily.” Jasmine Woodfield-White A spokesman for Sainsbury’s told the Voice that they would have more information to share about the convenience store soon. To make a comment on the plans visit the council’s website at developments.southglos. gov.uk/online-applications/ and search for application PK18/3739/RM.

n NEWS A MUM has explained why she posted videos online of her teenage daughter being dragged to the ground and attacked. Kim Nicoll says she wants to make other parents more aware of anti-social behaviour after her daughter Chloe was punched and kicked by two other girls near the Bristol and Bath Science Park. Kim said she had received heartbreaking messages from bullying victims after sharing the videos on Facebook. Chloe, 14, was visiting Lyde Green with a friend when the incident happened. Kim says Chloe and her friend had met another girl at the park when she attracted the unwanted attention of a larger group of youths. She said Chloe was attacked and, despite trying to get away from the area, she was followed and attacked again on a path near the Science Park. Chloe suffered two large scratches on her face and was left bleeding after the incident. Both attacks were filmed on a mobile phone and uploaded to the social media network Snapchat. As Chloe did not

Kim, who lives in Yate, hopes that parents who have seen the video on Facebook will use it as an opportunity to speak to their children about bullying and antisocial behaviour. She said: “I don’t think a lot of parents realise what their kids are doing when they are out and about. I hope that someone will watch it and sit down with their child and explain that if they saw something like this happen, they should not stand back and watch but go and get some help instead. “There was a massive crowd of about 15 kids watching when Chloe was attacked and not one of them stepped in to help, which breaks my heart.” A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “We’ve been investigating a report that a 14-year-old girl was assaulted in the Dirac Crescent area of Emersons Green at about 7.45pm on 28 August. “The victim sustained cuts and bruises in the incident. Two 13-year-old girls have voluntarily attended a police station for interview and enquiries are ongoing.” Anyone concerned over anti-social behaviour in the Lyde Green and Emersons Green area should report it to the police by calling 101.

When she got home I took one look at her and knew that something bad had happened. “After Chloe told me what had happened and had shown me the video footage, I rang the police. However, Chloe didn’t know the names of the two girls who had attacked her, and so I made the decision to upload the footage to Facebook to see if anyone recognised them so we at least had some more information to give them. I only have a few friends on Facebook so I didn’t think many people would see it, but as soon as I made it public it went viral.” Kim said she was inundated with messages, with some people saying they were in tears watching the video. Police took a statement from Chloe and have also questioned two 13-year-old girls about the incident. Kim said that despite her injuries, Chipping Sodbury School pupil Chloe is doing well after the incident. She said: “It has definitely made her a stronger person. She was nervous about going back to school but it was fine, as she’s made of strong stuff. Chloe has also started attending self-defence classes at

Official investigation into source of egg-like smell plaguing residents A NUMBER of sites are being investigated as authorities try to track down the source of an unexplained smell causing concern among residents of Lyde Green and Emersons Green. As previously reported in the Voice, the smell is most commonly experienced early in the morning and during the evening. Residents who have continued to share experiences on social media say it has an egg-like or sulphuric odour, and although it was initially thought to be coming from the Shortwood Quarry landfill site on Cattybrook Road, the Environment Agency says it is currently investigating other potential sources, including the abattoir at Westerleigh. A spokesman for the agency said: “The landfill at Shortwood Quarry is an operational non-
hazardous waste landfill and has an environmental permit, issued by the Environment Agency, for the disposal of non-hazardous waste. “In May this year, we required the operator Enovert to upgrade its landfill gas extraction system at Shortwood landfill. The gas extraction system consists of a series of wells drilled into the landfill, which collect the flammable and odorous gases produced by the landfill and burns them to produce electricity.” The spokesman said Enovert had added 17 new gas extraction wells to the 60 already installed in the site, to remove gas from the area of the site currently being worked on. Once extracted, the gas is burnt to generate 1.3 MW of electricity, which is exported to the National Grid.
To advertise, contact Gary on 07799 461169
Enovert has been told to check the gas generation plant and to ensure it is operating correctly and not causing further smells, the agency spokesman said, adding: “Ongoing investigations are taking place to identify other measures that can be taken to further reduce frequency and intensity of smells released from the landfill site.” Work at the quarry site is due to be finished by this time next year. The spokesman said the agency had been investigating other potential sources of the smell. He said: “As part of these investigations we have required the abattoir located just north of the M4 motorway at Westerleigh to make improvements to their ventilation system, which should reduce the release of odour from their operation.”
Email: sales@emersonsgreenvoice.co.uk
A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said the authority had “received a number of odour complaints” in the area and was monitoring them for any possible links, while also liaising with the Environment Agency, Bristol City Council and Bath & North East Somerset Council over complaints made to them. The council spokesperson said: “Because they cover such a widespread area, it suggests that just one site is not responsible for the smell and we think that the most likely cause is spreading on farms in the local area. It is not uncommon for us to receive these types of calls at this time of year, with colder nights and warm days.” Anyone who has concerns about smells in the area should contact the Environment Agency by calling 0800 80 70 60.

Government agrees to act on mum's ca
Paula McGowan and Caroline Dinenage is new and was taken at meeting mentioned in story - Paula is on the left.
A MOTHER’S campaign to change the way people with learning disabilities are treated by doctors and nurses has taken a giant leap forward, after the Government agreed to take action. Paula McGowan’s teenage son Oliver died at Southmead Hospital from the side effects of an anti-psychotic drug he was given, despite staff being warned he had previously had an adverse reaction. Determined to ensure lessons were learned, Paula, from Emersons Green, set up a Parliamentary petition calling for all healthcare professionals to be given mandatory training in making adjustments for patients, like Oliver, with autism and learning disabilities. Around 50,000 people have supported the online petition and the Government has now launched a consultation with the aim of improving training for NHS staff.
Its response is also in the light of an official report which found that on average, men with learning disabilities died 23 years and women 29 years before their counterparts in the general population, often for “entirely avoidable” reasons. Paula met with care minister Caroline Dinenage and senior NHS England leaders in Westminster just before the Government announced its new consultation, while Health Secretary Matt Hancock also sent her a personal message. She described the development as “very promising” but says she is waiting “with bated breath” to see what the basic training will look like and how effective it will be. Paula said she was particularly keen to ensure doctors and nurses were given face-to-face training from student level onwards, before they started to make daily lifeand-death decisions.

ampaign to change autism treatment She said: “I came away from that meeting incredibly positive and reassured that Caroline Dinenage is passionate about people who have got autism and learning disabilities, and will make effective changes. “I achieved what I set out to achieve. I’ve managed to get to the people I needed to get to.” Paula has asked that Oliver’s story be used as a case study in any training programme resulting from the consultation. Announcing the consultation, Ms Dinenage said: “Every person with a learning disability must receive the same high-quality care you and I would expect. "For too long many people with learning disabilities have had their lives tragically cut short, in part because of a lack of understanding about their needs. This must end. “We will consult on expanding learning disability awareness training so that
health and care staff are better equipped to provide compassionate and informed care. "Support will be improved to help enhance the lives of people with learning disabilities across
the country – anything less is unacceptable.” Paula’s petition can be found at petition.parliament.uk/ petitions/221033. Earlier this year North Bristol NHS Trust, which runs
Southmead Hospital, launched a new autism awareness training programme for clinical staff. The trust insists its staff acted in Oliver’s best interests and could not have predicted the side effect he suffered.
OLIVER, who was 18, had epilepsy, a mild learning disability and high-functioning autism after contracting meningitis as a baby. He was fit and healthy but a partial seizure in October 2016 saw him taken to Southmead, starting a chain of events that led to his death 20 days later. After being sedated and restrained, he was given the antipsychotic drug olanzapine, despite both Oliver and his parents telling doctors he had previously had an adverse reaction to such medication. The drug caused massive, irreparable brain damage and his life support machine was turned off after doctors told the family there was no hope of recovery. Oliver’s family believe he would not have died if their warnings over the medication had been heeded and that he may not even have needed to be restrained or sedated had staff had the training to effectively communicate with someone with autism.

n NEWS LYDE Green Primary School is celebrating a ‘good’ rating after its first ever Ofsted inspection. The academy school in Willowherb Road was visited by the education watchdog at the end of last term and its report has just been published. Inspectors highlighted “highquality teaching”, pupils’ good behaviour and progress, and the school’s “strong culture of reading”. They rated the school ‘good’ in all areas of inspection leadership, teaching quality, pupil behaviour and welfare, academic outcomes and early years provision - after observing classes, speaking to teachers, governors and pupils, assessing paperwork and taking account of the 63 responses from parents to an online questionnaire. The school opened in 2015 and at the time of the inspection had 124 pupils in reception, Year 1 and Year 2. But with the oldest children now in Year 3 and a new reception intake in September, the school has now grown to 184 pupils. It is run by the Castle School Education Trust

Watchdog says Lyde Green school is good all round in first ever report and started life on the site of one of the trust’s other schools, Downend School, before moving to its new home in 2016. The inspectors said: “Leaders have a clear vision of how the school serves its community. They have been successful in making that vision a reality. “The recently-appointed head teacher has set out clear expectations for teaching, learning and assessment practice in the school. Teachers rise to these expectations, so that pupils enjoy high-quality teaching.” As well as praising how children listened in lessons and worked together, the inspectors said: “Pupils behave well around the school. The playground is a harmonious place, where pupils play together well. “They are polite and show good manners.” Head teacher Mark Jackson said the school was “delighted”
Head teacher Mark Jackson and deputy head Wendy Westwood with pupils. with the Ofsted report. He said: “The report recognises the hard work and dedication of school staff, governors and CSET. As a result of this collaboration, Lyde Green is flourishing and providing a solidly good education for its pupils. “I am particularly pleased that the Ofsted team recognised the
importance we have placed on building a school where reading and a love of books is paramount. Our assessment results were recognised as very good, too, but it was also clear to the Ofsted team that we are about much more than tests and results. “We are so excited about the future, as we grow.”

Big crowd braves the rain for official opening of Lyde Green Sports Ground MORE than 200 people braved a downpour to take part in the official opening of Lyde Green Sports Ground. Exhibition matches by junior teams and a match between Longwell Green Veterans and Lyde Green Veterans were the highlights of the event to open the pitches and pavilion in Howsmoor Lane, which will be managed by Longwell Green Sports Football Club. The official opening was by South Gloucestershire Council leader Toby Savage, who said there was a “real need” for them across the local area. He added: “With Longwell Green Sports AFC you couldn’t have a better communityfocussed club taking on the management of the pitches and changing rooms. “As the ward councillor for Longwell Green, I’ve seen their great work locally in opening up football to all ages, genders and now for the first time a new team for children with disabilities – one of the new clubs in the region to do this. I’m in no doubt that the club will go from strength to strength and that Lyde Green will have a thriving new sports scene.” John Gibbs, chairman of Longwell Green Sports AFC, said the club was looking forward to linking with the community in Lyde Green. More than 40 people living in the development have already joined the football club and more, including juniors, expressed interest at the opening event. Lyde Green Veterans will now be using the facility for their home matches. Manager and Lyde Green resident Craig Pellowe said the team had won its first two home games at its “wonderful” new ground in Bristol Corinthian League Division 3. He said: “We have had a few
local spectators in these opening matches, including friends and family of players and other local residents and we are really grateful of the support. All match scheduling is shared via the Lyde Green Local Facebook group, so we encourage anyone and everyone to come along and get behind your local team. “The squad is now at capacity, so we are no longer looking to recruit further players, however we welcome anyone who would like to meet people in the local area to come along, introduce yourself and get involved with following us.” Also at the launch day were Emersons Green town councillors Rachael Hunt, Colin Hunt and Judy Adams. Rachael said: “I’m so pleased to see these facilities now in use. John and his team are working hard to bring it to life and it’s great to see both the teams having fun. I look forward to seeing activities here develop alongside the growing local community of Lyde Green.”

New health and fitness club gets green light A BIG new health and fitness club is set to be built next to Lyde Green after winning planning permission. The new David Lloyd centre will be built on the opposite side of the Rosary roundabout to the Emersons Green retail park, between the Avon Ring Road and Folly Brook, and should be open before the end of next year. As reported in previous editions of the Voice, the centre is set to include three weatherprotected tennis courts and a show court, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a sauna and steam room, a multi-purpose sports hall, gym facilities, 245 car parking spaces and facilities to park 20 bicycles. The application has been approved by South Gloucestershire Council’s planning committee, subject to certain conditions being met, such as ensuring that there are
no permanent external lights at the site other than those shown on the plans. Following the announcement that the application had been conditionally approved, residents

n NEWS BRISTOL Rovers players went back to school to help put the excitement of football into learning. Midfielder Liam Sercombe and defenders Tom Broadbent and Michael Kelly were surprise guests at Emersons Green Primary School to help Year 6 pupils as they took part in an interactive geometry lesson. Their visit was part of the Super Movers project, a partnership between the Premier League and BBC which aims to inspire primary school children to get active and learn in a fun and engaging environment. The lesson was streamed live from Manchester City’s Etihad Campus, home to the champions’ stadium and football academy. Liam, Tom and Michael helped the 60 Emersons Green pupils with the hands-on part of the football-themed lesson, estimating, measuring and calculating as they were introduced to key geometric concepts. Head teacher Karl Hemmings said: “The players were amazing. They were so patient and friendly

Rovers players bring the excitement of football to the school classroom with our children, and I could see how excited the students were to have them as surprise guests at our school. “I know how important the community trust is and the work that they do in Bristol, especially with young people, and I’m really proud to be working with a real community club like Bristol Rovers.” The community trust visits over 13 schools and engages with nearly 400 children every week in a variety of academic, physical and health and dietary activities. The Super Movers project brings stars from the worlds of football and television together to help deliver routines that focus on key literacy and numeracy skills, ranging from fractions and times tables to punctuation. Bristol Rovers Community
Tom Broadbent helps Emersons Green Primary pupils with their work Trust Primary Stars Lead Abbie Jones said: “These live, online lessons produced by the BBC are a great way of engaging with primary students. The
academic exercises are designed to be delivered using a football theme and the physical activities are a perfect way to encourage students to keep active.”

Council teams up with uni to buy science park SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has teamed up with a nearby university to buy the Bristol & Bath Science Park for £18 million. The 36-acre park, on Dirac Crescent, Emersons Green, includes the National Composites Centre and Forum exhibition and conference facility and has been open since 2011 - but still has large areas yet to be developed. South Gloucestershire has bought the site jointly with Bath University, which has already been awarded £38.9m towards the £60m cost of building a new hi-tech development, the Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems, at the park. The IAAPS is expected to eventually create 1,900 new jobs. A council spokesperson said that, of the authority’s £14.2m share of the cost, almost £5.8m was coming from the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership’s Economic Development Fund. The £8.4m balance, he said, would come from “prudential borrowing”, with the repayments expected to be met from income generated by the park. The park was previously owned by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Since it was first
proposed in 1986, £300m is believed to have been spent on it. Council leader Toby Savage said the park was already a “world-class centre for science and technology businesses." He added: “Having purchased we will give it a new lease of life and ensure that
Event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 AN EVENT to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War is to be held at Pomphrey Hill Sports Ground. Organised by Emersons Green Town Council and the Royal British Legion, the event will be held in front of the pavilion at 6.30pm on Sunday November 11. As part of a national tribute called Battle’s Over, a beacon will be lit at the start of the commemoration, one of more than 1,000 around the country that will symbolise the light of hope that emerged from the darkness of war. Following this, at 6.45 pm the names of the fallen on the Mangotsfield War Memorial will be read, followed by the sounding of the Last Post, and it is also hoped that church bells will be rung in celebration of peace. In addition, the Bristol Military Wives choir will also perform, and during the evening the bar at the pavilion will be open where refreshments, including soup and a roll, can be purchased. As it is an outdoor event, attendees are advised to consider wearing suitable clothing and footwear. To find out more about the commemoration, contact Richard Hull by emailing clerk@ emersonsgreen-tc.gov.uk or calling 0117 302 6989.

Angels need your help to reach Holland YOUNG street dancers have made it to a European final - but need to raise £10,000 to get there. The Guardian Angels, a group of 18 boys and girls aged 10-15 who are part of Emersons Green and Mangotsfield-based vDance, have launched a fundraising
campaign after qualifying for the UDO European Championships in Holland next May. The crew originally qualified for this year's world championships in Germany after qualifying at a competition in Newport but sadly a lack of funds meant they couldn't attend.
They put a huge effort into this year's qualifiers, which took place in Reading in June, so are determined not to miss out again. Mum Katie Hooper, whose daughter Lilly is a member, said: "The Guardian Angels compete in competitions up and down the country and have had a very successful season resulting in them qualifying for the UDO European Championships. This competition is massive for them but obviously we have to get them there. "They are frantically fundraising to make this dream become a reality. We have several fundraising ideas, one being a black tie auction event
where we are kindly requesting donations from friends, family and the general public that we can auction on the night. "They are a fabulous bunch of kids who are working so hard to achieve this and we are desperately looking for local companies to perhaps sponsor them and help fulfil their dream." If you would like to support the dancers' mission, please contact Katie Hooper on 0787 9693341 or email katiehooper1@ sky.com You can also donate via an online fundraising page. Street dance crew are jumping for joy WHEN street dance crew Dance Addix entered recent world championships, they didn't expect to get beyond the first heats. But the youngsters are now jumping for joy after securing an impressive fourth place. The dancers, aged 12-14 and all members of vDance based at Emersons Green and Mangotsfield, flew to Glasgow for the United Dance Organisation World Street Dance Championships. vDance director and proprietor Vicky Moody said: "Dance Addix competed against the highest calibre of street dance competition groups from all over the world and were thrilled just to qualify for the worlds. "When they saw the levels of dance skills they were up against, they didn’t expect to get beyond the first heats. Never in their wildest dreams did they expect to get awarded a fourth place." Choreographers Aaron Hatherall, Lewis Boomerlew
Norman and Tesleem Adeyemi had been relentless in ensuring the group was well-prepared to do their very best, helping them hone their skills in multiple styles such as krumping, popping, locking and break dance. "Dance Addix's routine was unusual, highly imaginative and required a high degree of skill and split-second timing," said Vicky. "The team has worked together tirelessly to make this happen. I am incredibly proud to have them represent our dance school and fly the British flag at the world championships." Vicky, who lives in Emersons Green, said it took a lot of dedication from both the dancers and their parents to ensure they even got to the championships. "The costs associated with getting 14 children plus accompanying parents to such an event are not inconsiderable and, in addition to their gruelling practice sessions, the children themselves got
Dance Addix impressed judges with their 'highly imaginative' performance involved with many different fundraising activities to pay their way including supermarket bag packing, tombolas at local events, cake baking, and a hugely successful afternoon cream tea event held at the Hilton hotel in Bristol, which raised £2,800
alone. "I’ve been absolutely blown away by the efforts and lengths our 'Dance Mums' have gone to in making it possible for their children to realise their dreams of competing in a world championship event."

n LYDE GREEN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
Latest from Lyde Green Community Centre A big thank you to everyone for your support with our new community centre so far! Several classes have now started, events and parties have been held, and Coffee at Lyde is set to open full time this month too! Make sure you’re keeping up to date with progress by following “Lyde Green Community Centre” on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and find out what’s on at www. lydegreenca.org/centre/whats-on. If you’d like to find out more about hiring the centre, get in touch with Alv Hirst (Centre Manager) via email at info@ lydegreenca.org or 07809 750545. Partnerships The Lyde Green Partnership meetings happen every quarter, bringing together representatives from local community groups like LGCA and Neighbourhood Watch,
as well as the council, consortium and other organisations that provide services or facilities to Lyde Green. LGCA seeks to get information for residents and local concerns get fed into these meetings. Our last meeting was held in September. We were pleased South Glos Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Team came along to discuss recent issues and want to remind residents to report any incidents of anti-social behaviour to asbreporting@southglos.gov.uk or telephone 01454 868582 (office hours). We also discussed other local issues: We’re looking forward to seeing parking signs and line marking on School Square shortly. Issues with speed tables and traffic calming measures were also raised, and we’re hoping to see some progress to make the roads
safer for residents shortly. Sainsburys have recently submitted a planning application for the retail site next to the community centre – do have a look at the application and submit comments. We asked partners for their support in getting action for the problems with the smell. Please keep reporting to the Environment Agency via the 24/7 number: 0800 807060 If you have any questions or concerns about the area that you’d like us to raise at future meetings, you can let us know by sending our Partnerships team an email at LGCApartnership@gmail.com. Events It’s almost time to start getting prepared for Christmas! Make sure you save the date for a multigroup Christmas Extravaganza on Saturday December 8 in Lyde

Emersons Green woman among 133 arrested in drink-drive crackdown AN Emersons Green woman was one of more than 130 motorists arrested for drink or drug driving during a police crackdown over the summer. The Avon and Somerset force breathalysed more than 370 people in roadside tests over a month-long campaign. Of the 133 people arrested, 74 were charged and a further 30 released under investigation. Police said that one of those charged was Alison Fisher, aged 45, of Emersons Green, who was disqualified for three-and-a-half years. Officers said the highest reading recorded of any driver during the campaign was 147 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath - more than four times the legal limit of 35. Police received around 370 tip-offs from members of the
public, after asking people to call or text with information about people they believed were driving under the influence of drink or drugs. The force said that half of the tip-offs attended by officers led to an arrest. As well as targeting suspected drink-drivers on the roads, police also carried awarenessraising activity, including a leaflet campaign involving neighbourhood teams and cadets. The constabulary’s head of road safety, Superintendent Andy Williams, said: “Our approach to Operation Tonic promotes education over prosecution where possible, with the ultimate aim to reduce deaths, serious injuries and crime related to drink and drug driving. “I’d like to thank the public
Did you see crash
for their support with this campaign and for sharing vital information with us. The reports received from local communities are an important part of identifying and tackling drink driving and our dedicated reporting line is always open. “I’d like to remind members of the public that there is never an excuse for driving whilst intoxicated. Anyone who chooses to do so not only risks arrest but more importantly, their own lives and the lives of others.” Although the summer campaign is over, people are still being encouraged to report drink drivers, by calling 999 if the suspect is behind the wheel at that moment or by texting 07400 279101 with the word ‘drunk’ and details of the car, location and driver at other times.
POLICE are appealing for commuters who use the M5 to contact them if they saw a crash in which a woman was injured. She was a passenger in a blue Skoda Fabia car which was hit from behind on the northbound carriageway between the Cribbs Causeway and Aztec West junctions. After being hit the car span into a lorry and ended up in the central reservation. The injured woman suffered a suspected broken wrist. Police are now calling on anyone who saw the incident to come forward, particularly keen anyone who believes they may have dashcam footage. An Avon and Somerset police spokesperson said: “The motorway was very busy heading into the Friday rush hour but no witnesses have come forward.” Anyone with information should call 101 and give the reference number 691 of Friday September 14. The incident happened at about 4.45pm.

Call for return of X48 after Metrobus 'shambles' PASSENGERS are calling for bus operator First to bring back the axed X48 after branding the replacement Metrobus service a “shambles”. People using the Metrobus m3 service from the Avon Ring Road to Bristol city centre say rush-hour buses are frequently late, overcrowded and take longer than the service they replaced. One mum is even thinking of removing her daughter from her new sixth form college because the Metrobus is taking so long to get her into Bristol, while other passengers say having to use Metrobus stops on the Avon Ring Road is dangerous. Bromley Heath mum Lorraine Passco says her daughter Charlotte has to be at the nearest Metrobus stop at 6.45am to be sure of making a connection to get her to college in Brislington by 9am. Lorraine said: “The whole situation is ridiculous. My son and daughter both need to get into town but my son now drives and my daughter potentially is going to change from St
Brendan’s, which she loves, to the Ridings, where she was before. If she stays, I will have to change my working hours and drive her. “The X48 was perfect and well-utilised. "I assumed the Metrobus was going to be a faster, more economic, efficient system. It’s unreliable and it’s slow - it’s ludicrous. “The suggested bus times are inaccurate. It takes 50 to 55 minutes to get into town, which is ludicrous when you consider how far we are from the motorway. It takes two hours in total to get to St Brendan’s. Lorraine blames the diversion via UWE for the extra time the Metrobus takes and says the area needs a direct service along the M32. She said: “Just give us back the X48 - that’s what we need. They have got rid of a very efficient, well-used bus for a shambles.” Bob Howison said the loss of the X48 was made worse by a cut in services from Yate passing through Downend.

He said: “Yate have got three express buses and a railway station. “If they put back the X48 it would be something. What they could also do is take the Metrobus and instead of going down the ring road have it turn left and bring it through Quakers Road. “It’s a nightmare having a bus stop on a dual carriageway; Bob Howison says bus users are someone’s going to 'having the mickey taken out of us' get killed there. “We’re having Valley) or Emersons Green it is the mickey taken out now a two-bus trip or a long walk of us.” and if I need to get to Southmead Elizabeth Branch said the that is a grand total of three journey from Bromley Heath to buses each way. Is your pet slowing down? vet
Old age and how to give them their bounce back!
AS we all age things aren’t as easy as they used to be, whether that’s walking long distances, climbing a flight of stairs, or bending over to pick something up. The same is true for your pet! Is my pet old? Due to breed variations there is no true fixed age that a pet is ‘old’. Your pet is considered to be entering ‘old age’ if they are over 7 years old for dogs and 10 years old Your Vet and for cats. It can be difficult to notice signs of age-related arthritis in our furry companions as it is a slow progressive condition. Due to the gradual nature it is not always something we recognise, so here are some things to look out for! Some signs of arthritis are more obvious: • Difficulty going up or down stairs or jumping onto beds (or surfaces for cats) • Slowing down on walks and reluctance to do longer walks • An obvious limp or abnormal gait • Vocalisation/whining when getting up or moving • Weight gain (due to inactivity) Some more subtle signs of arthritis include:
• Sleeping more or spending more time in a sedentary state • Behavioural changes, such as being more irritable or grumpy and less sociable/more withdrawn • Muscle loss, particularly in the back legs • Long nails where they are not worn down (particularly in cats these can become ingrown) • Difficulty going to the toilet • Licking or chewing over areas of arthritic pain • Lying on cold floors, pacing, restlessness and unable to settle into a comfortable position What can be done? Don’t worry, with advances in Veterinary medicines and technology there are lots of ways
to ease your pets arthritic pain and manage the condition. Such as; • Medications (anti-inflammatories and pain relief ) • Joint supplements • Weight loss (keeping your pet slim puts less stress on their joints) • Regular routine exercise (20-30 minutes maximum a day, try not to have rest days) • Massage, hydrotherapy or laser therapy

This is Mangotsfield, not Glastonbury NEIGHBOURS say a dance music festival brought noise, traffic jams and drunken behaviour onto their doorsteps. A group of Mangotsfield residents raised a petition of 150 signatures opposing the South West Dance Festival, staged at Cleve Rugby Football Club. They say the club in Cossham Street is not a suitable venue for the 5,000-capacity event, held in early August. But the club says the money it receives from the organisers to host the event is vital to its finances, and it is doing what it can to minimise the impact on neighbours. Around a dozen residents attended the September meeting of Emersons Green Town Council to complain about the all-day festival. A spokeswoman for the residents, who asked not to be named, said some people spent the night away from their homes
Cleve RFC in Mangotsfield hosts the South West Dance Festival to avoid it. The spokeswoman said: “There were people urinating in our gardens, we had taxis parked on our driveways so we couldn’t get out and people in cars dealing drugs openly. “There was rubbish everywhere - we had to go out
and clean it up afterwards. “The road system was completely jammed to a halt you couldn’t get out and we were being threatened when we tried to.” The meeting was told that the noise of the bass from the festival was “shaking people’s houses” and that people had been seen lying on pavements and in the road outside the ground. Another resident said: “This is Mangotsfield, not Glastonbury.” Cleve RFC vice-chairman David Partington told councillors that the meeting had been told “lies” and a “misrepresentation of the truth” about the event prompting an angry reaction from the residents present. Mr Partington said that there had been no arrests at the festival, that people were searched for drugs on entry and that the club had employed its own security team to move
people away from Cossham Street after it finished at 10pm. The maximum noise level had been lowered and monitored and there had been a total of six complaints to the club, he added. He said: “We’re not doing this to spite the community, we’re doing it because we need the funds. Outside of the Wurzels festival it’s the single biggest money-making event.” Town council chair Rich Nichols said the council had received five formal complaints about the event, while South Gloucestershire had received eight. Town councillor Colin Hunt, who is also a member of South Gloucestershire Council, advised residents to challenge the event’s licence when an application is made next year. But he said protesters should remember that Cleve was a “community club” and they should not try to “destroy” it.

appealing for anyone who thinks they recognise any of the items to call them on 101 and quote the crime reference number 5218 081 961. The force is recommending that people take photos and write down descriptions of jewellery and other items of sentimental value, and also consider marking it using “asset marking” liquid, which can only be seen under ultra-violet light. Time for me to lose some weight I’VE been helping people reach their goals in the fitness & nutrition industry for 15 years but I’ve never had to lose weight myself until recently. Since giving up breast feeding after 7 months of having my first baby I'd gained almost a stone. The worrying thing was that I never even really noticed, I just thought my clothes weren’t fitting me because I was bloated all the time! After deciding to join my customers in a 12 day weight loss challenge I was running I was extremely pleased with reaching my initial goal of 7lbs loss! Since then I continued with healthy eating (with the help of Herbalife Nutrition products) & training at my vibration plate studio in Dowend. After months of yoyo-ing with the last few lbs I finally reached my long term goal of 1 stone, 3% body fat plus a lot of abdominal fat loss! During this time I found out I had an underactive thyroid which could have been contributing to my difficulty in losing weight amongst other symptoms but with the right medication this is now controlled. I've finally realised that I don't have to feel full all the AFTER time, which isn’t an easy mind set to change after so many years of eating what I wanted. I learnt that I can live without foods that make me feel bloated, most of the time! Now for the challenge of keeping it off! I run weight loss talks & challenges alongside my vibration plate studio which anyone is able to come along to. You can find me at vibrocisestudios.co.uk if you’d like more information.

Vote for Ali's new book AN AUTHOR from Emersons Green is hoping to get the community behind her after her latest book was nominated for an award. Ali Bacon's In the Blink of an Eye has been longlisted for The People’s Book Prize, but she needs your online vote to get through to the next round. Although Ali is delighted, she admits to being a bit puzzled that her tome, published earlier this year by Linen Press, had been listed as non-fiction. Ali said: "I can see why there might be some confusion, because the book is based on a true story and most of the people in it are real historical figures. But I most definitely made the rest of it up!" Despite her surprise, Ali is still thrilled to be in the competition, which was developed as an alternative to existing prizes, where winners are decided by a small committee of ‘experts’. Ali said: "In The People’s
Book Prize, prizes are decided by readers– any member of the public can vote online." To vote for Ali, visit peoplesbookprize.com and remember her book is in the non-fiction section. The votes received by the 36 finalists are carried forward and the public vote again from April 1-30 next year. Winners are announced at a special black tie awards ceremony at the historic Stationers' Hall in London next May. In the Blink of an Eye, set in Victorian Edinburgh, recreates the life of a Victorian artist and photographer and has been described as "elegant, fascinating and profoundly moving". After obtaining degree in classics from St Andrews University, Ali worked in Oxford’s Bodleian Library, where her life-long interest in early photography began. After a career as an academic librarian, her first novel, Kettle of

The book is available from Linen Press but you can avoid postal charges by contacting Ali on 0780 0760624. If you would like a taster there is an extract on Ali’s website, alibacon.com/ The closing date for the first round of voting is October 15.

n PETER'S VISION
I
MUST share with you a statement from a visitor to our practice many years ago, that I still remember as if it was said only yesterday. It’s in part what has motivated my persistence in communicating often a similar message of just why people of all ages should have regular and thorough specialist eye care. This patient came in to ask our advice about a blurred red eye they had been experiencing. At the time we had NHS funding for many but not all patients. Without NHS funding, the cost of examining the patient was estimated at between £5 and £10, depending on just how many tests were needed to determine the cause for their concern. The statement shouted back at us as they stormed out was: "I’d rather go blind than pay to have my eyes looked at." I have from time to time wondered what became of that patient’s vision. I hope it turned out well for them but sometimes have my doubts. Now we're fully back in the swing of a new school term, it’s a good time to remind ourselves that
You’ve only one pair of eyes please look after them around 80% of our learning comes through our eyes. It’s startling when you think that around 25% of our children have some sort of difficulty seeing. What can you look out for? Well, it’s not always obvious, so watch for eye rubbing, excessive blinking, sitting close to the TV and a reluctance to read. Of course the last can just be a reluctance to read, but in my clinic often the patients reluctance to read is because of a treatable eye or vision difficulty. For us adults I would stress that regular thorough eye care should be an essential part of our routine checks every year or two. One eye condition we spot is glaucoma, sometimes called the thief in the night. This is because often it

goes unnoticed by the patient for many years; sadly this can be past the point that treatment should be started and occasionally to the point of no return - significant sight loss and no driving licence. This brings me onto the news at the end of the summer that some police forces are stepping up their driver's vision testing and applying severe penalties to those found to be driving with defective vision. What ever your personal opinion on this matter, the fact is that driving with poor vision is just not acceptable. I’m perhaps fortunate that in the last few weeks everybody who has asked, usually a little apprehensively, if they would pass the driving standard gets a big thumbs up from me

Volunteers clean up Bristol to Bath path TEAMS of volunteers gave up a day to make the Bristol and Bath Railway Path a better place for everyone who uses it. The clean-up was organised by Bristol-based cycling charity Sustrans, which helped create the route nearly 40 years ago. Around 50 volunteers, some local and others from as far afield as Wales and the Midlands, picked up litter, cut back overhanging branches, repainted mileposts and reclaimed the edges of the path where grass and undergrowth had narrowed it by growing over the surface. They worked at several sites on the path, including Staple Hill and Mangotsfield stations, Fishponds and St Philip’s. Among the volunteers were Laura Williams and Sarah Ladkani, both from Staple Hill.
Sarah said: “I use the path all the time and it’s nice to be able to tidy it up.” Laura said: “I cycle into work on the path every day. Me and my colleagues were going to a beach clean day but decided to do something local.” Sustrans employees including south of England director James Cleeton, who lives in Fishponds, also took part in the clear-up. James said work was being done to improve the path ahead of a redesign to mark its 40th anniversary next year. The charity is inviting people who use the path, from leisure cyclists and commuters to dog walkers and pedestrians, to get involved with the One Path Project, along with people who currently feel they are unable to use it. He added: “We want to find Laura Williams (top) and Sarah Ladkani with baby Noula (bottom)
(L-R) James Cleeton, Ray Evans and Roger Bartlett out about issues, challenges and solutions, working with all the communities that use the path, as well as people who are not using it. If the most vulnerable are not able to use it, people who would most benefit from it, that’s

BUS users staged a demonstration in Mangotsfield to call for the return of the axed number 10 service. The route, which linked Lyde Green, Mangotsfield and Downend to Frenchay, UWE, Bristol Parkway station and Southmead Hospital, stopped running at the start of September after operator Wessex withdrew from the Bristol area. Stagecoach, which took over most of Wessex’s services, has not taken on the 10 and South Gloucestershire Council, which previously subsidised the service, has not found an alternative operator. Instead, passengers needing to reach Southmead Hospital by bus are being told they must travel to either Staple Hill, Fishponds, UWE or Bristol Parkway station and change on to the 17, 77 or 82. Passengers have spoken out against the loss of the 10, and South Gloucestershire councillor Michael Bell has presented 400-name petitions to the council and the West of England Combined Authority, which has responsibilities for the region’s

Give us back our 'lifeline' bus
Protesters in Mangotsfield call for the return of the Number 10 bus transport system, calling for the service to be reinstated. To step up the pressure, a demonstration by passengers and other residents was staged in Cossham Street in September. Rodway Ward councillor Mr Bell said the 10 was a vital service for hospital staff, outpatients and visitors alike. Urging WECA members to intervene to save the 10, Mr Bell told them: “I do not know how
many of you regularly use buses and have direct experience of their reliability. Very few who do will be confident about relying on two buses to reach hospitals in a timely fashion. This comes at a time when the NHS is complaining about the cost of missed appointments. “Even if the 10 is not very widely used, as is claimed, it provides a lifeline to those living in Mangotsfield who rely on
public transport to hospital.” WECA referred enquiries on the service to South Gloucestershire Council. A council spokesperson said: “We have worked closely with WECA to explore alternative solutions following the announcement that Wessex has decided to leave the local bus market, leading to the 10 service ceasing to run as of September 2. “When we explored the option of retendering the service, the lowest cost would have seen the subsidy almost double on what we were previously paying, rising from £150,000 to £287,000. “Alternative routes are available for those who use the service and community transport is also an option.” The council is advising passengers to visit the Traveline website, www.traveline.info, or call Traveline’s 12p-per-minute information line, 0871 200 22 33, for further information on travel options.

Volunteers transform school’s garden of reflection A SCHOOL’S outdoor space has been given a new lease of life after workers at a nearby housing development gave up some time to transform it. The reflection garden at Pucklechurch Primary School is somewhere pupils can spend some quiet time to themselves. But it had become overgrown and unkempt - until volunteers from social housing provider Liverty and contractor United Living stepped in to clean it up. During a community action day they weeded the garden, painted fencing, repaired benches and planters in time for the start of the new term. The school’s new head teacher, Alex Capel, said: “We are so grateful to the team for all of their hard work. “They didn’t stop all day, to give us a much more attractive garden of reflection. “The children can now spend time in there and class collective worship sessions can take place in an outdoor setting. “We are really pleased with how successful it’s been.” The school has now started a gardening club to maintain the garden, helped by donations from the two companies and St Aldams Nursery.
Volunteers in Pucklechurch Primary School’s reflection garden Liverty and United Living are building 58 affordable homes at two sites in the village: Cable Close and The Moorings. They are planning further community events in the future. Liverty community empowerment officer Marie Burke said: “It was great to see so many volunteers mucking in to help improve a reflective garden at a primary school which
is at the heart of the community.” United Living community benefits coordinator Paula Lunnon said: “We had a brilliant day working with our partners at Liverty to bring the school’s garden back to life and are so pleased that this garden is now going to be used again by the children to support their learning and development.”

Votes at 16: Everyone who contributes should have a say This month 16-year-old Layla Dockerty, from Downend, discusses whether 16-yearolds should have the right to vote RECENT movements to lower the voting age by two years have been met with much controversy across the UK. Many established politicians have given their sides of the debate: Theresa May saying that it's not necessary to vote in order to participate in politics, and Jeremy Corbyn arguing that if 16-year-olds can join the Army, get married or work full-time, it seems unfair not to give them the vote. However, it's more rare to find the opinions of 16 and 17-year-olds being properly reported amidst this controversy. It seems to me that, seeing as the decision will affect us directly, young people should have more of a say in the discussion. That's not even to say that young people are necessarily
going to support British citizens being enfranchised at 16, as young people are more divided over the topic than one might think. However, historically, a lot of the time when a decision impacts a certain group, they are tactically silenced in order to amplify the voices of those who will be negatively affected if they get their way. On a much larger scale, when the first women were given the vote in 1918, working class women weren't amongst the newly expanded electorate. The government at the time instead opted to only enfranchise women over thirty who owned land of ÂŁ5 or over, or whose husbands did. This benefited the Conservative government at the time, as most
of these women were sure to be voting to support them. Many argue that similar behaviour is being shown by today's Conservative government, knowing that the youth vote tends to go to Labour. A lot of people are forced to question whether the government would take the idea more seriously if the youth vote were more right-leaning. The most popular argument from those who oppose the youth vote is that 16-year-olds are too uneducated or immature to make a fair vote, or that they just don't care. To this I would argue that the government has 16-year-olds in a prime position to educate us about politics - through school. If the curriculum included
regulated, non-biased lessons about today's political climate, I'm sure many 16-year-olds would be better educated than some members of the older generations. And, as for those who still don't care, they aren't being forced to vote. Of course there will always be some apathy towards politics from all age groups - but why should a few people who aren't bothered be used as ammunition to silence those who are? Overall, I think that it's time the government started to listen to everyone who contributes to British society, even if it isn't good news for them.

Cyclists needed for charity challenge A CHARITY which supports local hospitals is looking for people to join the Bristol to Paris Cycle Challenge next year. Above & Beyond, the official charity for UH Bristol hospitals, will hold the flagship event from September 11-15, 2019. The fifth annual event will see 80 cyclists taking a new 470km route from the centre of Bristol to the French capital, where they will finish by the Eiffel Tower. The event is open to all cycling abilities, with nutrition and bike maintenance support, group training rides and fundraising tips and advice all included. With people travelling to the hospitals from Swindon, Gloucester and even Cornwall there is no limit to who can join the ride – either as a team with colleagues, friends or family, or as individuals. Catherine Harris, who took part in last year’s event, said: "The atmosphere on the ride was amazing and I made lots of new friends. It’s great to know that the all money raised is staying right here in Bristol to help our hospitals." Previous participants have included a cystic fibrosis patient from Swindon, the dad of a baby who had surgery while still in the womb and a heart attack patient – all treated at Bristol city centre hospitals. Edd Smith, corporate partnerships and community fundraising manager for Above & Beyond, said: "This year cyclists can choose to fundraise for whichever of the nine UH Bristol
hospitals that means the most to them. "Taking part is a fantastic way to say thank you to the incredibly hardworking NHS staff and
we expect there to be a mix of staff, patients, companies and individuals looking for a new challenge. "Places on the ride are limited

Police warning over doorstep conmen POLICE are warning people to be on the alert for doorstep conmen after a Staple Hill resident was targeted in a distraction burglary. Officers released an e-fit picture, below right, of a man who called at a house claiming to be from the “gas board”. After talking his way in, he kept the householder in the living room of the house for about 20 minutes, continually asking if there was anyone else at home. Avon and Somerset police said that about an hour later, the householder realised someone else had come into the house and searched it, making off with an unspecified amount of cash. The technique used by the criminals is known as a distraction burglary, where one person keeps the victim occupied while another steals valuables. Police have called on anyone who thinks they recognise the man in the e-fit picture to call them on 101, quoting crime
reference number 5218 176 929. Infornation can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. The suspect is described as being white and about 5ft 8in tall, with blue eyes and short black hair. He was aged in his late 20s or early 30s and wore a black glove on his right hand.
The incident happened at about 3pm on August 7. Police say they are also aware of social media post about another doorstep con involving people charging an elderly woman in Mangotsfield £400 to carry out some gardening work, then fleeing with her money. However they that the incident has not been reported to
them and South Gloucestershire Council has no record of a trading standards complaint over the alleged incident on September 5. They are urging the victim of the Mangotsfield incident to call them on 101 or call Citizens’ Advice on 03453 04 05 06 to make a trading standards complaint.
Advice for dealing with doorstep crime Never open the door to an unexpected caller until you’ve checked their identification – use a door chain, viewer or window. If you’re not sure, don’t open the door. If you are suspicious of a caller tell the polce straight away – ring 999 if you feel threatened or intimidated, otherwise call 101. Keep your cash in the bank, not at home. Keep windows and doors locked if you’re not in the room. If you see someone calling door-to-door, but only on frail or elderly neighbours, call 999 straight away. Join Neighbourhood Watch. Set up a 'No Cold Calling Zone'. Nominate a neighbour to help you deal with unexpected callers.

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE
Awards and Injections at Cleve Chiropractic and Physiotherapy Centre JACK Withey has just celebrated his first year as an associate chiropractor for Cleve Chiropractic after leaving with distinctions at university. The accolades just keep on coming for Jack, as he has been nominated, as one of only 3 people, for national chiropractic associate of the year, by the British Chiropractic Association. The awards ceremony will be in October, so I look forward to letting everybody know how he gets on. To be nominated in competition with thousands is a huge honour and well-deserved. Jack was nominated for excellence for chiropractic service. He spotted a catastrophic injury to a patient who had a fall 6 weeks prior. After seeing all the relevant health professionals, the patient came in to see us on the bus that day. Jack spotted the problem, took an X-ray and he then called an ambulance to take them straight to A and E
with their X-rays on CD, where they were cared for appropriately. It would also be appropriate to talk about our other supremo chiropractic associate Michael (I’m not a basketballer) Jordan, who recently represented his country working as a chiropractor in the GB Masters Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Next year he has been selected to work at the World Masters Championships in Poland. If that’s not enough then also Keith Graham (Head of medical for Bristol Rovers and our head Physio) has recently completed his prescribing training. Keith used to work in Rheumatology within the NHS and has huge experience with injections. Now, however, he can provide the full service for private patients. He can prescribe medications where appropriate and administer any necessary injections. This month has seen a number of sub acromial (shoulder)

and for all! 22 and counting. For all of those who have been with me from the beginning then you will remember the journey began with Blog 1 – A Babymoon to Cuba, when Jen was pregnant with Molly. Well now, over 4 years on and she has started primary school in reception class. It’s frightening how quickly time passes but I am pleased to say that she is settling well and making lots of new friends. I have to admit to my heart breaking a little bit as I watched her skip off and turn to smile and wave at me just before she went in this morning. She is such a little treasure. Now we have a couple more years of Harry at home. I hope that time doesn’t pass as quickly!

injections that can provide huge pain relief very quickly. If you think you may need this service, then please enquire with reception to see if it appropriate. If it is, Keith can take care of it easily and quickly for you. As healthcare professionals at Cleve Chiropractic and Physiotherapy Clinic, we are all very conscious of the environment. After constantly being bombarded with anti-plastic media I started to notice how many plastic bottles were in my shower at home. Admittedly there are two of us who use that shower but 24 plastic bottles?! Wow, who knew? They build up, you know. There are the day to day ones, the blonde ones, the face ones, the special exfoliator ones, the ones that came with you from the hotel and of course the special ones that your mum buys for you at Christmas that you don’t use because they are too expensive to waste. Anyway, the point is that 24 is too many. So I started to look up alternatives. Now there are plenty of nice organic bars of body soap that you can buy so that’s easy, but I wondered what people used to do to wash their hair in the days before shampoo bottles? The answer is Shampoo Bars! I ordered a nice organic shampoo bar from Amazon and got started! They are great, they leave your hair with a slight squeaky cleanness, I admit but surely it’s better that buying tons of plastic? And they are cheap too, as they last a long time. So now I am working my way though the left overs and slowly reducing the plastic in my shower, once

Thom presented with award on pitch at Test match IT was enough to be named Gloucestershire's Cricket Coach of the Year. But for Downend Cricket Club's Thom Manning, collecting the award on the pitch during an England’s Test match was the icing on the cake. Thom won the English Cricket Board award for running the county’s biggest All Stars Cricket programme and for his work with cricket development and HIV/AIDS awareness charity Cricket Without Boundaries. He was presented with the award by Chris Silverwood, England’s bowling coach, on Day 2 of the fourth Test between England and India at The Agas Bowl in Southampton. Thom said: "I was very surprised and delighted when notified of the award. It was personally very humbling to be nominated for both the All Stars Cricket I organise and deliver at Downend Cricket Club and for my volunteering and management of charitable
