Centre makes a difference EMERSONS Green has been the site of a unique activity centre for children with disabilities this summer. Gympanzees is a social enterprise created by Stephanie Wheen, a physiotherapist who supports disabled children in Bristol. After being regularly told by parents how little there is for their children to do outside of school as a result of their disabilities, she came up with the idea of building and running the UK’s first dedicated centre

e for families with disabled children inclusive activity centre and to give the community a taste of what’s to come, Gympanzees set up a crowd funding campaign earlier this year to run a
temporary activity centre over the summer holidays. They needed to raise £60,000 to buy the specialist play equipment that was required, and thanks to a huge amount of support they were able to beat their fundraising target and raise £85,000 in total. As a result, Gympanzees’ first pop-up was held at Emersons Green Primary School in August. The school was chosen as it has a resource base, which means that it has provision to integrate disabled children within the school and has disabled parking facilities, disabled access and specialised toilet facilities with changing beds and hoists. As part of the pop-up, there were five indoor play areas including soft play, an indoor playground, music room, sensory room and gym, as well as an outside trampoline and playground. There was also a marquee for refreshments and a space for families to relax. Stephanie was delighted by
how many families had visited. She said: “At Gympanzees we want to give every child the chance to play and have fun. “As well as Bristol, we’ve had people travel for sessions from Tewkesbury, Bridgwater and Exeter and the feedback has been absolutely amazing. “We’ve had lots of happy tears, and so many parents have said how they normally dread the summer holidays but that this has made such a difference this year, which makes me feel really proud.” Stephanie told The Voice that Gympanzees plan to have a dedicated leisure centre for disabled children and young people built in Bristol within four years. The organisation’s next steps are to apply to become a charity in September, and they will continue to run pop-up activity centres until the leisure centre has been built. Work under way on homes at school site WORK is now under way to build homes on the site of a former primary school. The Victorian Mangotsfield Church of England Primary School in Richmond Road was demolished several months ago to pave the way for 21 homes. The school closed nearly two decades ago when teachers and children moved to new premises in Emersons Green. Since then the building has been used by South Gloucestershire Council's education department but was put up for sale when the authority declared it surplus to requirements. Rodway councillor Michael Bell had hoped the building could be saved for community use but the cost of repairing the building meant this plan never got off the ground. Planning permission was granted in April despite more than 20 letters of objection.
Work starts on the site of the former primary school Residents said the Victorian facade should be retained in order to respect local history. Others said there was already too much traffic thundering through the village and the development would just add to it. The scheme, called Richmond Grove, has been designed
by Yate-based housebuilder Cotswold Homes and includes 15 houses, six flats and 43 parking spaces. The company says it has been designed to "echo the external appearance of the oldestablished villas in Richmond Road and as a homage to the previous school building".
The company says the area – mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as Manegodesfelle – is popular with Bristol commuters keen to swap the city for a home location which, with its open green spaces and mature trees, still retains a village feel. A marketing suite is expected to open this month.

September, 2018 THE m3 metrobus between Lyde Green and the city centre will soon run seven days a week after it was revealed 120,000 passengers have travelled on the service since it launched. First Bristol, which started operating the m3 at the end of May, is expanding the Monday to Saturday timetable to include a Sunday service running halfhourly between 9am and 7pm. The new timetable starts from Sunday September 16. From the same date, the m3 will also provide evening and night journeys between 9pm and 4am on Mondays to Saturdays between the Centre and the University of the West of England (UWE). To provide extra bus capacity for students and people working at UWE, the company has also registered a new interim 'U3' university service between the city centre and UWE's Frenchay campus. The U3 service, which also starts on September 16, will be a buy-before-you-board service which will operate up to six times an hour during peak time, Mondays to Fridays, between 7.40am and 9pm. It is expected that the U3 service will be replaced by the m1 metrobus service when that starts operating in early 2019. First Bristol managing director James Freeman said: "We are pleased to announce that we are now ready to start operating the m3 metrobus service seven days a week from September 16 onwards. We’ve been rolling out this initial metrobus service very carefully and in a measured way, monitoring performance while the service has been bedding in over the past two months. “With the new timetable we’ve taken the opportunity to

"We’ve always said that we would introduce a sevendays-a-week m3 service in September once we had a better understanding of the way the route works. “We are really delighted that already, after just two months, an impressive 120,000 passengers have already used the service, exceeding our expectations in every way and we are pleased to see signs of healthy growth. The m2 service will run between Long Ashton Park and Ride and the city centre serving Ashton Gate Stadium, SS Great Britain, Wapping Wharf, Temple Meads Station and Cabot Circus. It is set to replace the current 903 service between Long Ashton Park and Ride and the city centre, which is operated under contract to Bristol City Council. The m2 will use a guided busway for part of its route which will allow services to avoid the often congested Brunel Way and Cumberland Basin.

Meningitis alert as Jake’s winning idea to h university beckons PARENTS of children off to university this autumn are being urged to help keep them safe from deadly meningitis. UK charity Meningitis Now is urging families to ensure their children have been vaccinated against Men ACWY and that they know the signs of the disease and what to do if they suspect it. First-year students up to the age of 25 can obtain a free vaccination for Men ACWY from their GP, although many will have received this while at school. But this does not protect them against all strains of the disease and they are unlikely to have been vaccinated against Men B, leaving them at risk from this strain. The charity’s campaign is being supported by Bristol mother Michelle Bresnahan, who lost her 16-year-old son Ryan to Men B in 2010. Since then she has campaigned alongside her universitystudent daughter Charlotte to raise awareness so that more young people can be protected, raising thousands through the Life for a Cure charity set up in Ryan’s memory. Meningitis Now offers a free information pack for parents and students, including leaflets, signs and symptoms cards, fridge magnets and year planners – all of which contain lifesaving information. These are available free of charge from www. meningitisnow.org/unis • Customers and staff at Emersons Green in Sainsbury’s have raised more than £10,000 for Meningitis Now in the last year after one of their colleagues, Izzy Gentry, died from the illness in 2016.
WHEN eight-year-old Jake Wilcox wanted to raise money for Children's Hospice South West, he knew he had plenty of family members to turn to for advice. For Jake's relations have raised thousands of pounds for the hospice over the years, taking part in gruelling cycle rides, 10K

The Mangotsfield Primary School pupil, decided he would run a tombola stall outside his grandparents' house in Emersons Green. Mum Louise advertised the event on social media which ensured Jake had a steady stream of customers on the day, raising a whopping £261. The family have been raising money for the hospice after staff there cared for Louise's brother Jack, who was profoundly deaf with Down's Syndrome and cerebral palsy. Jack was permanently fostered by Louise's parents, Sandie and Jim, after coming to the family when he was two. He died at the hospice in 2013 at the age of eight. Jake, who has two brothers, Dylan, 10, and Olly, 12, took months collecting items, carefully stuck all the labels on, made a colourful sign and baked cakes for the day. Louise, a teacher at Lyde Green Primary School, said: "Jake had been building up to it for ages and couldn't wait to do things. He literally did everything. When the day came he was so excited to run the stall and count the money up knowing he was giving it to the hospice. "Jake was three when Jack died so Jack had always been there since the day he was born. Jake remembers the hospice being involved and has always been around a lot of people from his family who have raised money for the hospice. £65m boost for Emersons Green research centre announcement: "I am delighted to see this substantial investment coming to the NCC at a time when the council is supporting several critical initiatives at the Bristol and Bath Science Park. "We believe that South Gloucestershire can lead the country in the future of advanced manufacturing and high-value design and see these as key components for the West of England Local Industrial Strategy. "We will continue to work with partners across the region to coordinate the skills and digital offer to match the outstanding facilities we can now boast across the north fringe, from the Science Park at Emersons Green, to the Bristol Robotics Laboratory at UWE, to the new Wing Integration Centre at Filton, we are extremely proud of our track record in innovation, research and development." The £65m for the NCC is included in a £780m package announced as part of the government’s strategy to expand the catapult centres.
A WORLD-leading research centre in Emersons Green has received a £65m boost, ensuring the region remains at the forefront of innovation. The government funding, announced on August 10, will go to the National Composites Centre (NCC), an institution for composites research and development which works with leading manufacturers on research into future industrial materials. Its backers read like a who’s-who of engineering excellence and include locallybased aerospace giants such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce and GKN – which are using the centre to develop new stronger and lighter materials for aircraft and engines – along with international groups such as 3M, Shell and Siemens. A prime example is the NCC’s role in delivering the Airbus ‘Wing of Tomorrow’ programme, which will ensure that South Gloucestershire’s world-leading aerospace cluster continues to be at the forefront of aerospace technology. n NEWS A MAN who received lifesaving cancer treatment has gone on to win a gold medal at the British Transplant Games. Nathan Rogers, from Emersons Green, was given a stem cell transplant after he was diagnosed with leukaemia. Now, just two years later, the 45-year-old has taken gold in the scratch golf event at the prestigious games, which took place in Birmingham from August 2-5. The British Transplant Games is an annual event in which people who have received lifesaving organ or stem cell transplants take part in a series of Olympic-style events. The games demonstrate the benefits of transplantation whilst increasing awareness of the need for more people to join the Anthony Nolan register and the NHS organ donation register, along with discussing their wishes with their families. It has recently been announced that the government in England intends to change the law on consent for organ donation. This will take some time and will not apply to stem cell donation, so people are still needed to join the registers. In March 2016, Nathan was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells. Nathan was told that he’d need to have a stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor. Fortunately, Anthony Nolan was able to find a match for Nathan – a donor from Germany. In August 2016, Nathan had a stem cell transplant and was cured of his leukaemia.
Nathan wins golfing gold after lifesaving transplant Nathan said: "I can't believe it was two years ago, where I am now and where I was then seems like night and day." Representing Team Antony Nolan, Nathan competed against almost eighty other transplant recipients from teams from all over the UK and won the medal along with the Seaun Orpen Cup. Nathan, a member of the Kendleshire Golf Club where he regularly plays, said: "Being part of Team Anthony Nolan is a real privilege and we were proud to wave the flag for this first-class organisation and look forward to doing so again when the games take place in Newport next year." Nathan competed at the games for the first time in North Lanarkshire, Scotland last year; at that time, he was not quite a year post-transplant but still came away with a silver medal. Peer support and encouragement is a huge part of the games and is highly valued by transplant recipients, their families and the families of donors. Nathan’s wife, Fiona, who caddied for him, said: "For me, being able to participate in the games is reward enough after the rollercoaster ride of the past couple of years. When I heard the announcement that Nathan had won the gold medal I was overflowing with pride for all he has fought and overcome. None of this would have been possible without the selflessness of his donor
and the phenomenal team at Bristol Haematology & Oncology Centre." Fiona, along with Nathan, is now encouraging as many people as possible to join the donor register. She said: "Prior to Nathan being told he would need a transplant, we were not fully aware of the need for stem
cell donors. The gift of life is the most precious gift of all, and even more precious when you are given a second chance." To find out more about Anthony Nolan, or to join the stem cell register, visit www. anthonynolan.org. To join the NHS organ donor register visit www.organdonation.nhs.uk
What is a stem cell transplant? A STEM cell transplant aims to try and cure some types of blood cancer such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. It is also called a peripheral blood stem cell transplant. You have very high doses of chemotherapy, sometimes with whole body radiotherapy. This has a good chance of killing the cancer cells but also kills the stem cells in the bone marrow. Stem cells are very early blood cells in the bone marrow that develop into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. We need stem cells in order to survive. Doctors can collect stem cells from your blood or a donor's. After high dose treatment, you have the stem cells into a vein through a drip to replace those that the cancer treatment has killed. Stem cell transplant means that you can have higher doses of treatment. So there may be more chance of curing the cancer than with standard chemotherapy. *Information courtesy of Cancer Research UK

It's that time of year again ... hundreds of students from our area and across the country have been picking up their exam results and preparing to take the next steps towards adult life. In the next few pages, we showcase some of the A-level success stories. GCSE results came too late for our publication date but you can find some coverage on our website and social media. Congratulations to all young people on their hard work and to families and teachers who supported them! Connie Foster, Macy Kendall and Lydia Jefferies are all smiles after picking up their A-level results at Downend Sixth Form
It's A for amazing as students shine DOWNEND Sixth Form is celebrating after it achieved a 100 per cent pass rate for its A-level results. Every university applicant got their first-choice place, and 50 per cent of candidates achieved A*-Bs – up almost ten percentage points from 2017. Headteacher Lisa Howell said: “Not only were our A-level results good, but every young person achieved the results that they needed to allow them to take the exciting next steps they had planned and hoped for. For some this will be university in September/October, for some an apprenticeship or job and for some the security of a place for next year, allowing them to fully enjoy gap year adventures! “We are very proud of our students who worked so hard and of our teachers and support staff for their dedication; the staff know and care about each student and provide tailored
support. It was wonderful to see so many happy young people and their families. We wish them all the very best as they begin their next exciting chapter.” Among the successful students were: Connie Forster: off to study philosophy at UWE. She was just hoping to pass her exams and so is delighted to have received two As for psychology and sociology, and B for law. Macy Kendall: has been offered a place to study geography at Cardiff University. She said: “I was hoping for three Bs and I got As for geography and psychology, and A* for sociology so I’m over the moon! I can’t wait to start my degree and I’m looking forward to meeting some new people too.” Lydia Jefferies: A*s for Eng lit and psychology and A for biology and heading for Exeter university. “I couldn’t believe it when I got my results! A summer of change Layla Dockerty, 16, from Downend, says it's only natural that teenagers feel a range of emotions post GCSEs SIXTEEN-year-olds across the country are soon to mourn the end of the 11-week summer in which we have indulged post-GCSEs. For many, this period has been one of relaxation, for others, adventure, but I think almost all of the recent GCSE cohort have experienced a summer of reflection. With the new term looming, a lot of young people look forward to new opportunities, new friends, and a new environment as many of us enter into A-level studies, apprenticeships, or employment. But for all of the excitement that September brings, there is the nostalgia and fondness for memories of old friendships, environments and achievements at secondary school. I don't think I'm alone in the feeling that it can be difficult at times to decide whether or not this is a positive change; and the apprehension felt by many of my peers, when faced with the concept of this new beginning, is presumably widespread. However, a lot of people see Post 16 education or employment as a blessing. It's easy to understand the attraction towards the independence that the next few years will offer, and for those who maybe didn't get all that they wanted out of secondary school, the opportunity for a fresh start is undeniably an exciting one. Regardless of difference in opinion over these upcoming changes, this summer has seen a particularly confusing and eventful time for 16-yearolds up and down the country, as melancholy meets with excitement and apprehension for what's to come. I hope results day hasn’t left anyone in low spirits, and I hope everyone benefits from the upcoming changes, and continues to do so in the years to come.

n EDUCATION
Mangotsfield sixth-formers ready to fly BEN Palmer had a rocky start to his A-level career but he managed to come out of it with an impressive two As and a C and is heading to Bristol University. The 18-year-old, from Kingswood, started off at Welbeck, a military boarding sixth form college in Loughborough, as he wanted to be an engineer with the MoD. After a few weeks, Ben had a change of heart and returned to Mangotsfield School's sixth form to study A-levels in maths, physics and chemistry. The school had already served him well after he bagged 10 GCSEs and a BTEC so he knew he was in safe hands. "I decided I wanted to go into physics or maths so I came back to Mangotsfield School. There was the added bonus that it was familiar and I had friends there." When you ask Ben if his results were down to hard work, he hesitates. "I could have worked harder," he admits. "I wasn't too great at independent study and needed a kick to get me motivated but the teachers were really good at doing that!" Ben started revising for maths at Christmas but didn't embark on the other two subjects until two weeks before the exams - not

a technique he recommends for others but it appears to work for him. "Revision doesn't seem to help the sort of learner I am but I'm pretty happy with what I got. I was predicted a B in chemistry but I'm not disappointed as I find chemistry harder than my other subjects." Ben said he was looking forward to starting at Bristol Uni: "I've lived here all my life and the university buildings, especially the one next to the museum, always appealed to me. It's a really good university as well. I plan to go on and get a PHD in mathematics and then work in research mathematics for the university." Ben's mum Louise said: "He didn't revise much, he just seems to have a photographic memory. Maths is his first love. When he was in Year 2 at Deerswood primary (now Kings Forest) he was going to Year 4 to study maths. Then, when he was in Year 4, he was going into Year 6 lessons. I'm very proud of Ben and wish him the best of luck at Bristol." AN unconditional university offer didn't lead to Jasmine Woodfield-White taking her foot off the accelerator. Despite knowing before her exams she'd secured a place at the University of Gloucester, Jasmine worked as hard as ever and emerged victorious on results day with A grades in psychology, law and English language. She had done well in her GCSEs at Mangotsfield School, gaining seven As and three Bs so was happy to continue her studies there. At sixth form she took the subjects she really had a passion for but admits she worked relentlessly. "I just got my head down and worked really hard," she said. "I had been revising really hard since January because I really wanted to go to university

but when I got an unconditional offer, I just kept going. I don't like failure!" Jasmine, who lives in Emersons Green, definitely made the most of her time at sixth form, even taking driving lessons and passing her test alongside her studies. But even though Jasmine was well prepared for her exams, she wasn't entirely confident of how she would do. "I'm in shock," Jasmine said on results day. "I didn't think the exams went that well but luckily I got what I wanted." Her hard work now means Jasmine can study criminology, a subject that fascinates her. Alongside that she will take psychology, paving the way for a career in the police. "It's the forensic and crime scene side of the police which really interests me," she said. Jo Woodfield, Jasmine's
Jasmine Woodfield-White mum, who was with her daughter when she collected her results, said: "She's done nothing but study for the last couple of years. Her bedroom was covered in revision notes! She absolutely deserves this - she is very focused and hardworking and is always sat at her desk."

n MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER
Fostering a love of learning
S
Julian and Jenifer Capper Silverhill School and Day Nursery
ILVERHILL School offers an education to children from 0 – 11. The aim of the school is to foster a love of learning and provide an opportunity for children to grow into wellrounded and empathetic young people who have an understanding of the world they live in and confidence and self-reliance. Our beautiful grounds provide a wonderful opportunity for the children to take their learning into the outdoor world and discover how their education has relevance to the world they live in. The basis of their core education is guided by the National Curriculum, but we choose to use this in conjunction with a cross-curricular approach, based on a termly theme. This gives the children the opportunity to develop their thinking and problem-solving skills and for their emotional maturity to grow as they consider in greater depth what each subject is offering.
The inclusion of French, Spanish, Latin, Forest School, Sport, Music, Debate, Dance and Drama gives the children an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the emotional world as well as providing opportunities for them to work together and develop their social and leadership skills. Their awareness of and gratitude towards the community in which they live is enhanced by visits to local homes for the elderly and running projects in school to support the elderly. Beyond this and with the full support of their parents the children are also actively supportive of an orphanage in India called Haven Home, with fund-raising and by sending out school items, such as Silverhill uniforms and classroom items. We look forward to welcoming you to our Open Morning. Julian and Jenifer Capper

n NEWS
Hopes rise for new youth activities A PROJECT has been launched to increase provision for young people in Emersons Green and Lyde Green. In March, Emersons Green Town Council decided to investigate what provision is available for young people within their boundary, which includes Lyde Green. As part of this project, youth work providers within South Gloucestershire were contacted, and it became clear that most services have been cut for financial reasons. The town council has now appointed local group Youth in Sodbury to provide some detached work and undertake a project to identify what services the young people of Emersons Green and Lyde Green would be interested in using. Two youth workers, Emily Crane and Christian Stefanczyk started working in the area at the end of July, and they are keen to engage with young people of all ages to find out what activities they
Emily Crane enjoy and how these could be best provided. Emily said: “Detached youth work is different to the work done in a youth centre. It means working with young people in their environment, wherever that may be, but usually on the street, at local parks or anywhere young people tend to gather. “The aim of the work is
to develop communication channels with young people, provide accessible and relevant information and encourage them to make safe choices. Raising young people’s awareness of the effect they have on their community and encouraging them to participate in services are some of the benefits of detached work. “Through detached work youth workers gain a comprehensive understanding of the local community and what the community might need. Workers can then take action to help improve services in the area.” If any residents or young people would like to make a suggestion about youth activities within the area, please complete the following survey: https:// www.surveymonkey.com/r/ JP22ZHR or contact the clerk of Emersons Green Town Council by emailing cate@ emersonsgreen-tc.gov.uk.
Art goes on show STUDENTS from Pathways Learning Centre in Downend have staged an art exhibition on the theme of Identity. Their work has been on show at Easton Community Centre and Fishponds Library during August. Pathways is for children aged five to 16 who are unable to attend mainstream school for various reasons. Art teacher Anita Gardner said: “We feel public art exhibitions are an essential element of celebrating achievement of the young people we work with. Many of the young people at PLC have not experienced a feeling of success or recognition within mainstream school and art is fantastic medium to provide an opportunity to be acknowledged in a positive way.”

Safety works at council tip
Planters brighten School Square SUMMER brightness was brought to Lyde Green thanks to the efforts of volunteers. The Lyde Green Open Space committee filled the planters in School Square with blooms donated by residents and were able to show them off to an assessor from the RHS South West in Bloom. The group has been fundraising to buy specialist watering equipment to help make it easier to water the planters and are pleased to have already passed the £200 target.
Equipment will be purchased shortly. More volunteers to help with watering woud also be welcomed. If you could help with this, please sign up here: https://goo. gl/forms/9HS2lFhfFnwn7cbV2 Annual sponsorship opportunities for each of the planters is available at
£100 per planter for the year. This will cover planting, soil improvements, and plaques for the planters. If your business or organisation is interested in sponsorship, please get in touch with LGopenspace@gmail.com. You can find out what else the Lyde Green Open Space group is up to via their Facebook page.
FIRE prevention works are taking place at the waste transfer station and Sort It centre in Mangotsfield but public access is not affected. The works, which started on August 16, will last until Friday October 5 with a minor interruption to the facility from Friday September 21 until Saturday October 6. During this time the area for recycling hard/rigid plastics will not be available and anyone bringing hard/rigid plastics will be redirected one of the other three sites at Thornbury, Yate or Little Stoke or advised to bring it to Mangotsfield once the area is reinstalled. The work is being carried out because the old concrete barriers that are used to separate different waste and recyclable materials in the shed are no longer fit for purpose. They will be replaced with new blocks that will improve fire prevention at the site.

Success plus! Pageant boost for Emma-Jay A MUM from Lyde Green is celebrating success at the Miss British Beauty Curve pageant. Emma-Jay Jones, who has lived in the estate with her two children for two and a half years, became Mrs Bristol Curve in December and followed up with the England title. The aim of the Curve beauty pageants is to celebrate larger-sized women and boost body confidence. The British finals were held on August 4 in Kent. Emma-Jay represented Bristol against women from other parts of the UK, and was placed first runner-up. She took part in three rounds: a ‘glitz and glamour round’ where she wore a Union Jack dress that her friend Jane helped her make, a swimwear round, and an evening wear round, in which she wore a floor length dress and was judged on her poise and elegance. Overall, Emma-Jay came in second place in the Mrs British Beauty Curve category and also won Best Publicity for her charity and campaign work. She also won Best in Glitz & Glamour round.
Next, Emma-Jay has her sights set on the Miss International Beauty Curve finals in Kent on October 20. She said: “I'm still trying to take it all in, I can't quite believe that this happening to me. I've had many battles with body image, self esteem, and confidence over the years and I have overcome the challenges to become a very proud plus size girl! “I want to take this experience and use it to empower women to embrace their beautiful bodies, every lump, bump, wobbly bit and scar – it’s beautiful! Every women deserves to feel amazing in their own skin and it’s about time society recognises we are all different and all unique, and all beautiful in our own way. “I would also like to say a massive thank you to my sponsors Just For You Bridal, Ludicrous Lengths Salon, and The Showgirl Academy - without them I could not have done it!” To keep up to date with Emma-Jay’s progress in the International finals, visit her Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ MissBritishBeautyCurve2018

£1.76m barn restoration project gets under way A PROJECT to redevelop Winterbourne Medieval Barn is making good progress now that formal permission to start has been received from the project’s main funder, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The £1.76million project will repair and conserve the 14th
century barn and its associated buildings to create a rural heritage venue. The Cart Shed has already been renovated with some activities continuing to run while the majority of the building work takes place during 2019. The redeveloped site is set to re-open in 2020. The Cart Shed provides an educational hub. Avon Wildlife Trust has delivered workshops for a school and a care home has been treated to one of a series of tours which includes afternoon tea. The AWT Go Wild days in the summer holidays were a big success, as were the first Archaeology Summer School workshops, which proved very popular with budding palaeontologists. The sessions were run by archaeologist and teacher Jenny Hopkins. The barn will be open on
The archaeology sessions proved very popular September 8 and 9 from noon until 5 for Heritage Open Days. Entry is free. Sunday October 7 will be the Orchard Harvest Day, which is the barn’s biggest annual event. Other upcoming events include an Owl Prowl in October with Avon Wildlife Trust and the Hawk and Owl Trust and
the launch of a monthly evening lecture series in November. Workshops being held in the coming months will enable people to learn how to make beeswax candles, herbal gifts, Christmas wreaths, and felt. Details of the programme can be found at www. winterbournebarn.org.uk/

Are you waking up to the symptoms of an enlarged prostate? CONVERSATIONS about a man’s prostate are usually very embarrassing or uncomfortable for anyone. However, Consultant Urologists Professor Raj Persad and Mr Anthony Koupparis of Spire Bristol Hospital are promoting the awareness of symptoms and treatments surrounding this topic to get men talking. Despite thousands of men suffering from it on a daily basis, an enlarged prostate isn’t exactly the usual choice of conversation over a pint at your local. The condition known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) does not occur because of the presence of cancer, but due to the fact the prostate continues to grow throughout most of a man’s adult life. The condition itself is not a threat to a man’s health, but it can have dramatic impacts on the quality of life for an individual. BPH puts pressure on the bladder causing a variety of symptoms including; having difficulty when starting to urinate; a weak urine flow (stopping and starting); a sensation of not fully emptying your bladder and even having to urinate more frequently (especially at night), subsequently disrupting your sleeping patterns and likewise that of your partner. A midnight trip to the bathroom is never warmly welcomed
by anyone. We asked Consultants Professor Persad and Mr Koupparis of Spire Bristol Hospital, what can be done if diagnosed with an enlarged prostate? “Sometimes presentation of prostate cancer can mimic the symptoms of BPH, so I advise you to consult your GP at the earliest opportunity to be sure. As for treatment for BPH, the mainstream therapy to date has been tablets for milder forms of prostatic obstruction or surgery for the more severe. Surgery can be fraught with side-effects excessive bleeding, incontinence and sexual problems - whilst tablets may be ineffective or cause sexual function problems.” said Consultant Urologist, Mr Koupparis.
There is, however, a revolutionary technique available which is suitable for most men, bringing relief, improved quality of life and minimal side-effects. “A new treatment called UroLift avoids the invasiveness of surgery and the unwanted side effects of tablets. It involves no blood loss or ‘cutting’ and takes 10-15 minutes for implants to be inserted into the prostate, prising open the prostatic urethra, restoring urinary flow and satisfactory bladder function.” explained Professor Persad “‘It is being hailed the new minimally invasive treatment of the future for the majority of those with troublesome symptoms due to BPH - only in rare cases with atypical prostate anatomy is Urolift unsuitable” He continued. UroLift is available at Spire Bristol Hospital and patients can usually be in and out of hospital within the same day. The treatment is increasing in popularity as men can be put off by traditional surgical methods for fear of becoming impotent. For more information on the procedure or to book an appointment to see a Consultant Urologist, contact Spire Bristol today on 0117 980 4080 or email info@spirebristol.com.

DO you enjoy singing, even if it’s only in the shower or car? Have you thought about singing in a choir but never plucked up the courage because you think you’d need some level of musical knowledge? Or maybe you already sing in a mixed choir and fancy giving the male version a try. If the answer to any of these is yes, Frampton Cotterell Male Voice Choir would like to hear from you. It rehearses on Friday evenings from 7.30 to 9pm in Zion United Church, Frampton Cotterell BS36 2HY. It invites potential recruits to an open rehearsal on Friday September 21. You can just turn up on the night, or contact Steve Jaques at sec.fcmvc@gmail.com or 0117 909 2510 if you have any questions. The choir sings four part harmonies, singing new material as well as classic Male Voice Choir favourites. There is no audition to join and no previous experience is required.

n PETER'S VISION IT’S been an interesting summer, so far we’ve had more sun that I’ve known in years and I’ve even managed to get a sun tan! Quite an achievement really considering the amount of time I usually spend working indoors. It’s got me thinking though, reflecting back even, how I’d often spend the early part of my summer - sitting outdoors year after year pretending to be studying while watching the cricket! These days I’m happy out in the garden, at the park or on the beach. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy my work and seeing so many of you, it’s just nice to be able to balance work (indoors) with family time out and about. I do have a question to pose - many of us are in the thick of back-to-school preparations. New shoes, backpacks, lunch boxes, books, pens and the like. I wonder how many of us have an eye exam for the younger eyes in our families on the to do list? Probably just a few of us; if that’s you then well done I’m impressed! You’re members of an exclusive
Look sharp - it's back to school club. Mind you, there’s probably never a bad time of year to book an eye exam, so no worries if you’re adding an eye exam to the to do list today! One of the eye conditions that seems to be affecting more of our younger patients is myopia or short sight. This is where your mid to distance vision is blurred and clearer with glasses. If you’re short sighted you can often though read up close quite well without glasses - which does have its benefits I can tell you! Time in daylight really does seem to benefit our eyes & help normal visual development, as well as help reduce myopia. We advise around two hours a day outdoors time; which can be spent walking to school, playing or enjoying team sports. I’m often asked how much screen time is too much screen time. Well, to be honest, and for all

we do know, I’m not sure we have a definitive answer on this one. No doubt each of us has an opinion, but in terms of hard evidence we’re still waiting for the concrete answer. I usually advise that 20 minute blocks of screen time with a good break in between, say a 20:20 split of screen time and non screen time is a good balance. If you combine this with two hours outdoors you are probably onto a winning formula. If you'd like to know what to look out for with young eyes that may need to see their Optometrist then here’s a few; reluctant readers are regular attendees in my child vision clinics, as well as those with difficulty copying from the school board, eye rubbing / blinking more than normal, using a finger to guide their reading or even sitting too close to the TV! Lyde Green residents get chance to learn about Neighbourhood Watch RESIDENTS of Lyde Green have the chance to find out more about their local Neighbourhood Watch scheme and its progress over the last year at a drop-in session on Monday September 3. The Lyde Green Neighbourhood Watch (LGNHW), which is run by volunteers, was formed in 2017 with the hope of tackling crime by encouraging residents to communicate with each other as well as the police. Every resident is automatically a member of the Neighbourhood Watch, which involves individuals simply looking out for their neighbours and the community, and reporting any issues or suspicious activity. In Lyde Green, the Watch is split into 13 zones, which will be adjusted over time as the area develops. Each zone is managed by a dedicated zone coordinator, who acts as a focal point for the NHW for issues and concerns arising within their zone. The drop in session will be at Lyde Green Community Centre. Refreshments will be available to purchase from Coffee at Lyde,
and residents are invited to pop by for a drink and a chat and to find out more about the aims of the scheme. Following this, the Watch’s Annual General Meeting will take place at 7.30pm, which residents are also encouraged to attend. As part of the meeting, an update on crime and policing within the area will be given from the local beat team, and an

election will also take place to establish key roles for the LGNHW committee. These include the role of chair, secretary, treasurer, public relations officer, webmaster, newsletter editor, social media administrator, events coordinator and residential zone coordinators for each zone. Current chair of LGNHW James Blackwood said: “Currently the Watch doesn’t have a secretary and only has an interim treasurer. Unless both of these roles are filled at our upcoming AGM, we can’t form a committee and the future existence of LGNHW is in doubt, so we would really encourage local residents to come along, get involved and support their community.” Any resident of Lyde Green is able to stand for a role within LGNHW’s committee. To express your interest or to find out more about the scheme, email info@ lydegreennhw.com or visit the Watch’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ LydeGreenNHW/

Children's success in quest to solve mystery of the Mighty GodSword
SIXTY primary school children descended on St James Church Hall in search of the Mighty GodSword. As the week progressed the children eventually discovered that they should have been searching for God’s Mighty Word, which can be found in The Bible. The church hall had been decked out in keeping with the desert theme and during their travels the children enjoyed craft activities and games every day and sang and
danced along with a band of musicians. To help keep fit the children participated in Desert Aerobics each morning, including learning to ‘Walk like a Camel’. This action-packed week was made possible by a large team of volunteers from St James Church in Mangotsfield, some of whom had given up a week of their holiday to ensure this activity was well staffed and the children had fun. Several teenagers, who had
previously attended such holiday clubs, gave up time to support the younger children. At the end of the week all children were invited to attend a celebration service on the Sunday morning. This was followed by a buffet lunch that was provided by members of the Desert Detectives Holiday Club Team. “There was a real buzz in the hall as everyone then relaxed together and started to discuss ideas for next year!” a spokesman said.

Park yoga session raises £200
MUMS have raised more than £200 for a charity which helps women who suffer from perinatal and postnatal depression. More than 50 mums - and their babies - flocked to the sensory garden in Page Park for a special yoga session. The money will go to Mothers for Mothers, a local charity which support families affected by depression and anxiety during pregnancy, following birth and up until their child reaches school age. Maria Viner, CEO of Mothers for Mothers, came along and shared information about the work and services that the charity offers. The session was led by Clair McGill, from Lush Tums Bristol, who runs termtime mum and baby yoga sessions in the park.

The natural wonders of Cyprus
WE stepped off the airplane in Paphos and were instantly hit by the sweltering 36 degree heat. We had arrived in Cyprus and were itching to see what this tiny little island had to behold. Our first stop was to hire the car that would be our closest companion over the next seven days; it was a small Ford Focus that was calling our names. During our week in Cyprus, we tried to strike a good balance between relaxing on the island’s many beaches and visiting all of the sites that told the stories of the Greek Gods and Goddesses, particularly those related to Aphrodite, Goddess of Love. We searched for the beaches of Paphos itself, and found tiny stretches of beach where all the tourists were eating their seaside lunches. We tried jet skis in Coral Bay, we snorkeled in the water by Aphrodite’s Beach near Latsi, and we watched the beautiful sunset over at Faros Beach. Other than all of these coastal retreats, we also learned all about how Aphrodite and Adonis met each other at the Baths of Aphrodite, we saw the legendary place where it’s believed Aphrodite was born (on the coast of Petra tou Romiou), we walked in the paths of kings in the ancient part of Paphos and we marvelled at intricate
The sea caves in Ayia Napa mosaics depicting yet more stories of the Gods. But aside from all of these wonders, there are a couple of other memories I want to share with you that really made this trip special. The first was venturing as far north as Ayia Napa in order to snorkel in the sea caves there. Not only were the views from the cliffs stunning, but the water was crystal clear and full of marine life. If you too are set on snorkeling or swimming here, then you should know that there is a bit of a steep climb down to the water. Some
choose to jump from the cliffs, while others wear sensible shoes and follow the grooves in the rocks in order to make it down. But once you do, you’ll feel so blessed to have made the effort! The other incredible memory from the trip was of our final day. Our flight wasn’t until the late afternoon and we were searching for a relaxing way to spend our final morning. That was when we discovered the beauties of Eleouthkia Botanical Park, which was actually just 5 minutes from the airport by car. Eleouthkia is free to enter and has over 55,000 different types of flowers, trees and
plants to admire, as well as cute little bridges and quaint wooden huts. We walked, we talked, we laughed, and felt like this was Cyprus’s charming way of saying “Goodbye, please come again!” to us. Don’t worry Cyprus, I’m sure we will be back, and we hope some of our friends and readers will also visit in the future too. Kalo taksidi (Bon voyage)! Advice on preparing for benefits changes
Don’t dump pet waste
PEOPLE with disabilities and their families and carers will be able to find out more about Universal Credit at an event in Downend. South Gloucestershire Disability Equality Network (SGDEN) are hosting the event on Friday October 5, at Badminton Road Methodist Church, Badminton Road, Downend, Bristol BS16
I HAVE a six-month-old son who absolutely loves trees and being outside so given the nice weather we aim to go for a walk every day. But in a couple of places now I have spotted that someone is dumping big piles of used wood chippings/saw dust near footpaths. I think it's from someone's rabbit hutch or guinea pig cage and it smells unpleasant. I have guinea pigs and pay for a green bin to take away the used bedding. My guess is that people used to put used bedding in their black bin rather than recycle it but now that the black bins have got smaller they don't have the space to do that and so rather than pay for a green bin they are just dumping it in public places. It is rather unpleasant because obviously there is animal waste mixed in but there may also be uneaten food mixed in there which could attract mice or rats. Given that one of the places this stuff has been dumped is in the park, the person who is doing this is extremely inconsiderate. Please could residents be considerate of the place where they live and not dump animal waste in our parks and on our footpaths? The two places I have found so far are the footpath from Bishop Road leading towards the Village Hall and the footpath at the entrance to Emersons park which you can access via Beck Close or Church Farm Road. n AROUND THE WIs DOWNEND WI JULY'S meeting was all about Downend! We were joined by Roger from Downend Local History Society who gave a very interesting talk together with photographs about the origins of Downend and lots of interesting facts. Did you know the name Downend stems from being an area of sheep farming, where the sheep were kept at the end of the Down! We aim to have a wide and varied programme and still to come this year we have the charity One25, how to get the best from
participated in some thai chi from Harmony Arts Association, plus the committee got to work with planning a jam-packed 2019 calendar, which is now well under way with some brilliant and fresh ideas. In September we have a highly anticipated talk coming from an ex-member of the Queen’s Body Guard, which we are sure will be a hit with our members. We still have some upcoming trips in our social calendar for this year including a trip to the theatre to watch Swan Lake, and creative trip to Paint Potts in Thornbury plus our most attended event of the year, the Christmas meal! Our programme planners have arranged for Judi Wray-Bliss to speak to us about the Seasons in Bath. What are the Seasons in Bath? I hear you say. Well, Judi will be talking about how women used to dress and conduct themselves through time. We will find out about the bloomers and things they were wearing in the period and she bring items for us to see too. Manor Cup will be linked to the talk and the theme is a fan. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors for the first two visits. We have a broad range of ways to contact us - mangotsfieldwi@ gmail.com to email the team directly. their long term commitment to both recycling and sourcing new renewable packaging. For a small charge their friendly community team put on a mini wine testing session, provided yummy nibbles and persuaded their ‘wine guru’ to give us an educational, entertaining and interactive talk about wine. The following morning I awoke thinking that their supermarket was built on an old quarry with primary foundation support being provided by a redundant North Sea oil rig. Later I was relieved to discover that I hadn’t either dreamt or imagined this scenario and that the history of this site is well-known to Waitrose staff and local people. Our thanks to the community team for making us so welcome. Last month at Heathfest our members enjoyed a rewarding day out running our tombola stall to raise money for Jessie May. A big thank you to everyone who bought tickets – we hope you were lucky enough to win a prize. It will be business as usual on the second Thursday of September when we will all be learning something about wildlife gardening. Mini bunting With Liz Freke of Hattie’s Hooray’s With the Summer holidays now over and thoughts turning to spending more time indoors, why not create some beautiful doublesided mini bunting to brighten your inside spaces. You will need: Oddment of fabric 1 metre of bias binding Cotton to match the shade of bias binding Cotton to match the shade of your fabric Sewing machine Fabric scissors Pencil/pen Sewing needle Ruler Iron Knitting needle/chopstick
1. These instructions will create a string of bunting with seven double sided flags – using your ruler and pen/pencil, draw 14 triangles on the reverse of your fabric measuring 7cms width x 10cms length.
2. Now cut out your triangles. Take two of your triangles and, with right sides together, pin and sew each angled side, leaving the top straight edge open.
3. Repeat with all remaining triangles – you will now have 7 bunting flags. Turn them all right side out, using a chopstick or knitting needle or similar to push the bottom of the triangle to a point.
4. Take your iron and press each flag on both sides so it makes the shape as flat as possible. Now take your length of bias binding and fold it in half along the length – iron this in place. Next, trim any excess fabric at the top of each flag so that the top of each flag looks straight
5. Take your binding and sew it closed along the length for 20cms (this will be the length you use to secure your bunting to your hanging surface). Now take a flag and insert it into the folded bunting, pushing it right to the ironed crease in the bias binding. Sew across the binding which will enclose the flag as you go. Now continue to sew along the binding for 1 inch and then insert your next flag and repeat for each bunting flag.
6. Repeat until all of your bunting flags are enclosed and equally spaced along the bias binding. Finish off by sewing a 20cm strip of binding (like you did at the other end). Secure any loose threads and you are now ready to hang your beautiful bunting! Why not decorate it with letters or buttons or simply hang it in your favourite place – the perfect way to brighten up any summer space!

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE
Best career in the world (almost) A-LEVEL results day! What an exciting day, I remember it well. I had applied to chiropractic university in Bournemouth as I knew what I wanted to be from the age of 15 after watching my Dad have treatment on his ‘old man neck’. My mum, ever the pragmatist, made me apply to physiotherapy as well, as a ‘back up’, but I knew I would be OK to go down to the university with the best beaches in the UK. I remember that UCAS weren’t very happy with me waiting until the end of the day to turn down my offer from Manchester for their physio course. “Well somebody else will be pleased with the last-minute offer then”, the 18 year old me said. Honestly, I could kick my own backside for the cheek I had back then… It’s great to see that five or six locals, after experiencing chiropractic care at Cleve Chiropractic, have been inspired
to become the next generation of chiropractors as they start their training in September. They are now on the first step on their journey to becoming a member of the greatest profession on earth (apart from a dolphin trainer, nothing can compete with that). It makes me very proud to see youngsters from here following the same path that I took and I know that the next students aren’t far behind as they complete their GCSEs. So have you thought about becoming a chiropractor or advising a family member to become one? Did you know that there are only 3400 chiropractors in the whole of the UK compared to 50,000 physios? This means that we are in high demand. The universities have reflected that we need more than 10,000 chiropractors to keep up with demand. Chiropractic clinics are struggling to find new chiropractic

I am always happy when I meet patients and their families when I’m out walking around here. I truly have that magnificent sense of being part of a respectable profession. Fifteen years in and I love my job even more than the day I started. It’s not often that I hear people say that. If you are interested in a career in chiropractic look up more on the BCA website https://chiropracticuk.co.uk/become-a-chiropractor/. Or maybe go to an open day at one of the universities. Good luck to all with their A-Levels, GCSEs and future careers, whatever they may be.

associates to fill their clinics. The oldest mature student in my year was 48 when it started. There is 100 per cent employment within the profession and a good starting salary, so not a silly place to start! Also of interest is that chiropractic is recommended by the NHS for low back pain and it is recommended within the NICE guidelines for the treatment of low back pain. You can receive chiropractic care on the NHS in certain areas of the country but sadly not in Bristol, the postcode lottery and all that. There are three universities currently. One in Glamorgan in Wales, one in Bournemouth and a new one in London. You leave with a Masters of Science level degree and it takes four to five years to graduate. When you get past all the stats, which really do add up, it really is a wonderful vocation. I truly believe that chiropractic is a career that calls to you when you have experienced it. All we do all day is help people, often when nobody else can. We are highly qualified to diagnose conditions, we can use X-rays and read their MRI scans if needed. We create wonderful treatment programmes for them that include hands-on treatment, exercise, nutritional and lifestyle advice. We routinely get to work alongside our wonderful GP, physiotherapy and sports therapy colleagues. We get to work in elite or amateur sport like the Olympics, premier league football and rugby or even at my happy place Cleve Rugby Club! We can help with babies or the elderly. Our days are so varied, no two being the same.

Healthy holidays
What an innings for George! GEORGE Williams walloped the first double century this season in the Martin Berrill Bristol & District League, finishing on a remarkable 269 to break a long list of records. The opener, whose previous best score for Downend-based Churchways was just 73, survived several chances to clout 34 fours and 16 sixes off 118 balls in a Division Eight clash away to Bristol Malayalee. Williams’ knock was the highest in Churchways’ 36-year history, and he helped the club to a 40-over declared total of 465-3 – another club landmark. Williams and Hanzlah Malik (77 not) shared a third wicket stand of 222 – the highest partnership ever recorded by Churchways who completed a 311run win which is another record. Rod Penney then went on to capture 5-21 from five but he was left in the shade as Williams rounded off a perfect day by taking the final two Malayalee wickets to fall – including a dismissal off

his first ball – for a return of 2-11. Williams’ first 50 came off 39 deliveries while his 100 was from 63 and it was then 150 off 77, 200 from 97 and 250 off 113 as he overhauled Churchway’s previous highest individual score of 256 not out, by Will Purcell back in 2003. Spare a thought, though, for Jayakumar Menon who was left high and dry on 90 as win-less Malayalee were bowled out for 154.

FIT and Fed, a programme to provide healthy food and activities for children during the school holidays, has expanded this summer. It has taken place at Tyndale Primary School in Yate and Parkwall Primary School in Cadbury Heath. Integra Catering staff worked with suppliers John Sheppard’s, A. David, Brakes and Charles Saunders to serve the meals, while sports and activities for the children and young people aged eight to 16 were organised by Juice Community Project and Community Sport and included football, cricket, circuits and playground games. South Gloucestershire Council leader Toby Savage said: “We are happy to be supporting such a worthwhile scheme during the school holidays."
