Strawberry fields forever? SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Susie Scaife was so upset at the thought that a new motorway link road might be built through the fields near her home that she took it upon herself to write to her MP. Susie, who lives in Parkfield, on the outskirts of Pucklechurch, told Luke Hall, the MP for Thornbury and Yate, that a road would affect people’s homes, destroy fields and nature, drive away birds and “the noise would be deafening”. She and her friend wrote the letter without help and Susie’s mum Hannah Scaife sent it to Mr Hall, senior members and officers at South Gloucestershire Council and Pucklechurch Parish Council along with her own objections. Mr Hall has already replied, reassuring Susie that he is backing Pucklechurch residents in opposing the proposed route from a new junction 18a on the M4 to the ring road. He and Kingswood’s MP Chris Skidmore support the junction and link to ease congestion, but want to see it built at Emersons Green. Consultation has now opened on South Gloucestershire Council’s feasibility study into Junction 18a, which suggests three route options, two around Pucklechurch and one at Emersons Green. It reveals that a third Pucklechurch route and a central one via Lyde Green were dropped. Full story: Pages 6 and 7

the motorway; hence the suggestion that the M4 needs to be realigned - using Green Belt land - for the western option. Meanwhile, communities in Pucklechurch, Parkfield, Siston and Shortwood fear devastating consesquences if the eastern option is chosen. The benefits of creating a junction need to be weighed against the impact. Please take time to read the extensive consultation materials, attend the information meetings and put forward your views. You can have a chance to influence the future! Young citizens are already doing so, as our stories this month about Susie Scaife and young Lanie show. Voice papers are all about community and we applaud people of any age who get involved. If you have a story to share, email us at news@ emersonsgreenvoice.co.uk or give us a call. WE make no apologies for turning the spotlight on M4 Junction 18a this month, as these proposals affect all our readers, as well as people across a much wider area. Many of us, especially those who live or work in Emersons Green, would welcome the opportunity to get on and off the motorway network without having to sit in a traffic jam on the ring road. Councillor Colin Hunt, who has been campaigning on the issue for 25 years, says it has got to the stage where something has to be done, because the A4174 is virtually a car park. However, it’s not as simple as it might have been quarter of a century ago to create the junction, because of all the development around

Park and ride is ready and waiting ... THE new park and ride site at Lyde Green opened for use ahead of schedule in an effort to minimise the impact of the Bromley Heath viaduct works. Four bus routes (X48, 18, 462 and 86) serve the park and ride, which has been created as part of the MetroBus project. These services go to the centre of Bristol, Temple Meads station, Southmead Hospital, Kingswood and Yate. As yet, there are no dedicated park and ride services as there are at other sites. Despite the Lyde Green facility having 102 spaces, 16 disabled bays, 24 cycle spaces and one motorcycle bay, since it opened on Monday July 24 the Voice has observed it being empty on several occasions. Comments posted on the Bromley Heath Viaduct and Lyde Green Local Facebook pages point out a lack of adequate service to the park and ride in the evenings and Sundays, buses being cancelled and the
expensive cost of tickets, with several people referring to the site as a “derelict car park.” Some residents have also complained of parking there to use the facility and having buses drive pass them without stopping. In response, a spokesman from South Gloucestershire Council said: “The recently opened Lyde Green park and ride is on the route of four bus services - the 18, 86, 462 and X48, providing access to Bristol, Southmead, Kingswood and Yate. These services currently operate Monday to Saturday and are predominantly commuter services. The 18 stops every 20 minutes during peak times reducing to hourly, the X48 stops half-hourly and the 86 and 462 stops hourly. “We are working closely with the bus operators to ensure the new stop is serviced and we will further remind bus companies to ensure the stops are not missed.”
The council has also said that it will continue to promote the new park and ride facility while the Bromley Heath Viaduct work is taking place. In addition, it states that the ticket cost is in line with the other charging structures for bus routes in the area, and that it will investigate
the potential to also run a Sunday service. The park and ride is on Willowherb Road in Lyde Green, off the Rosary roundabout on the A4174 ring road. n NEWS A FATHER of two young children has launched an ambitious plan to raise £25,000 for charity despite undergoing treatment for cancer. Tom Bird, 31, was diagnosed with high grade Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in April and has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment ever since. Despite his ordeal, he says he wants to "give something back" in recognition of the support he has been given by his family, friends, employer and hospital staff. Tom, who lives with wife Janie, daughter Sophia, three, and son Reuben, one, is planning three charity events in a bid to reach his target - a family fun day at Pomphrey Hill, a mass headshave at Cleve Rugby Club and an internet auction of shirts from all 92 football league clubs. Proceeds from the three events will be split between Macmillan and The Forever Friends Appeal, which is raising money for a new cancer centre at Bath RUH, where Tom is being treated. Tom, who lives in Cadbury

‘Cancer won’t stop me raising £25,000 for charity’ Heath, is being helped by his parents Alan and Sandra, from Downend, and his sister Johanna Noble, 33, who lives in Fishponds, who have been visiting local businesses to get their support for the fundraising campaign. Tom, a dispatcher for Avon and Somerset Police, discovered a lump under his right arm while he was showering. His GP thought it was just fatty tissue but decided to send him for a scan at Southmead Hospital just to double check. The scan was inconclusive so doctors gave Tom an MRI scan which revealed the lump could be cancerous. More tests were carried out and Tom was told the heartbreaking news that he had high grade Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph
system around the blood. "It was a massive shock," said Tom. "No one thinks it's going to happen to them, especially at my age as this type of disease mainly affects people over the age of 65." To date Tom has received six rounds of chemotherapy and will start 15 sessions of radiotherapy around mid September. At the end of September he will be given a scan which will tell him how well the treatment has worked. Tom, a Bristol Rovers supporter, heard about a campaign to build a cancer centre while he was undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Bath RUH and thought it might be something he could get involved in. Although he hasn't used the services offered by cancer charity
Macmillan, he was impressed with the work it does so decided he would try to raise as much as he could and split proceeds between the two charities. Tom said: "It was a bit of a distraction for me, really. I wanted to keep my mind active as well. I don't want to sit around feeling sorry for myself I want to do something I can get my teeth into.” Tom is optimistic about his future: "The lump was massive but now I can't feel anything there, and neither can doctors, but until I have the scan, I won't know for sure. "I'm a very optimistic person. When I found out I had a little cry and my daughter came up to me and said 'It's going to be all right, daddy'. I made a decision there and then that I

n NEWS wasn't going to cry in front of the kids again - I was going to be strong for everyone. I've got such amazing family and friends and that's half the battle. They keep me positive." Tom's first fundraising event, the family fun day, takes place at Pomphrey Hill, Mangotsfield, on Saturday September 30 from 11am-5.30pm and Tom hopes to raise around £5,000. It will feature live entertainment with a magician and singers, barbecue, bouncy castle, tombola, raffle and hairbraiding. Tom said: “I wanted to organise a family fun day to say thanks to all the people who have supported me through this.” Tom will follow that with an attempt to break the world record for highest the number of simultaneous headshaves on November 18 at Cleve Rugby Club in Mangotsfield. The record is 329, set by a Canadian cancer charity, but Tom is aiming to get at least 350 people on board. The last event is the auction of football shirts. Tom has been in touch with
the 92 Premiership and English Football League Clubs to ask for signed shirts. “ I've already got well over 80 pledges of shirts from clubs so haven't got too many left. I'm now waiting for the transfer window to close so the shirts can be up to date. I'm looking to get the shirts in by the end of September so I can auction them off at the start of October. I don't think it's ever been done before; the closest seems to be some police officers in Cambridge who managed to get 72 so it will be quite a challenge. "My aim is to raise a total of £25,000, which is quite a big whack. If we can get 350 people involved in the headshave and they each raise £100 each then we should be able to exceed the target. "Cancer is one of the biggest battles in life and if I can remain positive in the face of that, then there's nothing that's not achievable."
Tom Bird with wife Janie and daughter Sophia. The couple also have a son, Reuben

M4 Junction 18a: official route NOW is the time for you to make your views known on proposals for a new junction on the M4 between Tormarton and the M32. South Gloucestershire Council believes a Junction18a is needed to ease congestion on the ring road and other parts of the transport network. Working with Highways England, it commissioned consultants to produce a report, which has now been released for consultation. It shows the two routes that became public earlier this summer: a western option at Emersons Green and two possible eastern options (A and B) between Pucklechurch and Parkfield. The report reveals that a third eastern option, directly over the Pucklechurch ridge to the Dramway roundabout, and a central option at Lyde Green were both considered but ruled out, as were other variations on the routes. It further states that the eastern option B, closest to historic buildings in Pucklechurch, “has a number of constraints and would be difficult to deliver without severe adverse impacts on the local community”. The relative costs are given as £446 million for the western option, £348 million for eastern option A and £328 million for eastern option B. The western option is the most expensive because it includes realigning the M4, which the report says is needed to avoid impact on properties at
Lyde Green and to enable much of the work to be done without having the close the motorway. All the options encroach on the Green Belt. The junction cannot be sited near the Wick Wick roundabout, where the M4 and A4174 ring road are closest, because it is too close to the Hambrook junction. Motorway exits have to be at least two kilometres apart. The earliest the road could be

open is 2027. The council has organised a series of meetings to explain the findings of the study so far and people have until October 16 to submit comments to the council. These will be analysed so that the council's cabinet can decide in March whether there is a case to go forward to the Department for Transport for the junction and link road. Pucklechurch Parish Council
has called a public meeting for September 12 in the community centre at 7.30pm. Residents in Siston have formed an action group to fight the proposals. Both Pucklechurch and Siston Parish Councils have resolved to oppose all eastern options. Emersons Green Town Council will also discuss the proposals before the end of the consultation period.

The story so far ... and what happens next CALLS for a junction 18a have continued for more than 30 years because of the pressure on the road network caused by housing and employment development north and east of Bristol. A proposal to pursue the idea was voted out by South Gloucestershire Council in 2005 but in recent years the cause
was taken up by Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore, who secured £500,000 for a feasibility study. The current consultation is a part of this study and will help councillors decide whether the junction and link roads would be value for money, affordable, achievable and deliverable. If the council were to decide

to go ahead, it would develop a business case to put to the Government. A final decision would be made by Ministers because of the scale of the project. At the moment, the council is keen to stress that the project is at a very early stage and no decisions have been made.

HUNDREDS of jobs will be created over the next few years thanks to a massive investment in a research centre in Emersons Green. Work will begin next year on the £60m Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) at the Bristol and Bath Science Park. It is due to open in 2020 and will pioneer the development of ultra-low emission vehicles. The aim is to use the engineering expertise of the University of Bath for the benefit of the UK’s car industry, creating a global centre of excellence. The project has received funding of £28.9 million from the Higher Education Funding Council for England and is expected to get another £10 million from the Local Growth Fund through the West of England Combined Authority and Local Enterprise Partntership. IAAPS is set to create an additional £800 million turnover for the UK automotive sector and nearly 1,900 new jobs. Global companies such as McLaren, Ford, Jaguar Land

n ON THE BEAT with PC JAMES ROCHFORD
Take care as the nights draw in THE darker autumn nights mean we should all take more care on our roads. This is especially true as it’s a new school term and some children will be walking to school with their friends for the first time. Please remind your children how to cross the road safely – ideally using a pedestrian crossing, making sure they can see clearly in each direction and always looking both ways. They should be aware of their
surroundings, so not staring at their phone or listening to music so they can’t hear approaching traffic. Make sure they wear appropriate reflective clothing, and if they cycle they should wear a helmet and have lights and reflectors on their bike. Those rules apply to adults as well! We all have responsibility as road users to help to keep them safe, whether we walk, drive, cycle or ride a motorbike. One of the important things
Emily before her haircut
motorists must do is obey speed and parking restrictions which are put in place to protect other road users. We’d like to remind anyone dropping children off at school or collecting them: • slow down • never park on the yellow zigzags • r espect the crossing attendant, if there is one •p ark with consideration for residents We work with South Gloucestershire Council to enforce parking restrictions outside schools – they’re there to help keep our children safe. If you park on a double yellow line or a yellow zig zag, council enforcement officers can issue you with a fine of £60 or £100 respectively. Parking on the white zig zag at a zebra crossing, or causing any unnecessary obstruction could mean a police ticket with a penalty of an £100 fine.
National Award winners of the Good Garage Scheme
We’d prefer it if everyone just allowed a little more time for the school run and parked with more care! Finally – we’re really proud of our PCSO Emily Marshall, who has donated nine inches of hair to the Princess Trust to be made into wigs for children with cancer. She also raised more than £500 in sponsorship for the charity.

Lanie, 6, sells cakes to help children with malaria SIX-year-old Lanie has raised more than £500 for Malaria No More UK by holding a cake, sweets and drink sale at her house in Lyde Green. The fundraising event took place on Saturday August 5, and was entirely organised by Lanie herself, after she was inspired by a video she saw on Comic Relief earlier this year. As well as baking some of the cakes herself and making sweet bags, contributions were also received from Lanie’s friends and members of the local community, as well as Avenue Café in Emersons Green, Blackhorse Garage, Costa, Tesco and Budgens. Her mum Katie Rakoczi said: “Lanie saw a video about children in Africa with malaria on TV earlier this year, and was quite upset by it. She asked me whether it’s possible to get malaria in this country, and I explained we’re very lucky and that’s why they show the video to raise awareness and raise money

Ellen is going to take a gap year before going to study fashion promotion at South Wales.
Eloise gained A for religious studies, B for psychology and B for sociology.
Emily Shingfield
Max Clark
Emily has aspirations to become a teacher and is off to study primary education at Plymouth University. She is delighted to have received BB for double health and social care, and C for geography.
Max Clark has been offered places to study maths by both Exeter and Royal Holloway. He achieved an A for maths, C for further maths and D for physics.
Oliver Thompson and Megan Harris at Mangotsfield School
Mighty Mangotsfield STUDENTS from Mangotsfield School and Downend School are off to university or starting apprenticeships this month after successfully completing their A-level courses. The two schools merged their sixth forms in 2015 so the 2017 leavers were the first to benefit from the increased range of subjects and staff expertise on offer. Sarah Witts, head of the sixth form at Mangotsfield, said it had been a challenging time because of the changes in many A-levels to linear courses with exams at the end rather than modular, with ASlevels halfway through. "What is most important is that the students have got the qualifications they need to go where they want to go and do what they want to do. To see all these happy faces is a delight," she said. Students are heading for universities across the land, from Plymouth to Newcastle. Others are taking up higher-level apprenticeships, and one is joining the Army. The A-level pass rate was 100 per cent with A*-C grades at 64 per cent. Some students also achieved university places after getting high marks in BTECs. Megan Harris got an A in English Literature and Bs in history and law and will study law at the University of Bristol while Dan Thorne earned an A* A and B and will read maths in Southampton. Other high performers were Richard Wathen and Emily Silverthorn. Top performers at Downend School sixth form were Ridwan Axmed A, A, A; Barbara Vanotti A, A, A; vAlessandro Ruggiero A*, A, B; Stephanie Hacker Distinction*, A, B; Wiilliam Packwood A, A, B and William Plummer A, A, B.

New school year brings a new start SEPTEMBER is the perfect time to get started with additional support for your child’s education. After the long summer break, many of you will be reminded of your child’s summer exam results or school report. The children I tutor in English and Maths at Kip McGrath Bristol North in Downend require tutoring for a variety of reasons: some are struggling to keep up to year level, due to time out from school or the pressures of the school system; others are there because their parents want to make sure that their children are ‘on track’ and well supported in their learning; some parents would like their children to be extended beyond their year level, or are aiming to get their child in to one of Bristol’s best private schools. And of course, there are those who are preparing for exams, from SATs right through
to GCSEs. Whatever you and your child’s needs, the tutoring at Kip McGrath’s tuition centres is based on the simple ethos that ‘all children can progress if given the correct
All Kip McGrath tutors are qualified and resources are mapped to the school curriculum. A free assessment will establish where your child is in relation to his or her school year level expectations. Based on this, your dedicated tutor will devise a starting point and personalised learning plan to enable your child to reach his or her individual learning goals. Each session lasts 80 minutes and students are taught in classes of 3-5, ensuring individual attention. Since I opened the Downend branch of the internationally renowned franchise in January, I have been delighted to see my students improve their grade levels, as well as grow in confidence, motivation and self-esteem. n EDUCATION Students with Interim Principal Peter Smart
Hard work rewarded MORE than 100 students from Winterbourne International Academy students are off to university after achieving excellent A-level results. More than half of grades in 2017 were A*-B and 26 per cent A*-A. The following students all achieved three or more A*/A grades: Ben Chandler 4A*, Oliver Green 3A* 1A, Isobel Wilkins 3A*, Jennifer Babb 2A* 1A, Avin Litt 2A* 1A, Emily Wilkins 2A* 1A, James Concannon 2A* 1A 1B, Sarah Bradbury 1A* 2A , Jo Rees 1A* 2A, Thomas Edgecumbe 3A 1B , Robert Porteous 3A , Maya Prowse-Hall 3A , Alex Stenner 3A. Two students have been accepted to Oxbridge. Isobel Wilkins will be going to Cambrige to study Modern and Medieval Languages and Emily Wilkins will be going to Oxford to study Geography. Director of Sixth Form, Danielle Jolosa said: “Words cannot describe how proud we are of all our students and the grades they have achieved. Their hard work and determination has certainly paid off and I wish them all the best as they embark on their next chapter.”
Winning formula THE departing head girl and boy from Colston’s School are both set to study chemical engineering. Francesca James achieved four A* grades in chemistry, physics, mathematics and further mathematics and is headed to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge while Harvey Morgan is going to the University of Nottingham. Most Colston’s students have secured places on their first or second choice degree courses, many with Russell Group universities. Meanwhile a number of high-performing students have secured higher level apprenticeships. The school is delighted that Colstonians will be joining Rolls-Royce, Dyson and Grant Thornton. It is also confident that Colston’s School’s innovative Future Leaders employability programme and sixthformers’ study for Extended Project Qualifications has put students in strong positions to make the most of their next steps. The 2017 A-level and BTEC results were impressive: 38 per cent of A levels were awarded at grades A*/A, 71 per cent at grades A*/B and the pass rate was 100 per cent. Twenty two per cent of students achieved AAA or better and 42 per cent ABB or better.

n VETS’ ADVICE EVERY year, many pets of all ages become seriously ill or die from infectious diseases which could have been prevented by vaccination. Vaccines stimulate the body’s immune system to produce antibodies, which protect against specific diseases. All unvaccinated pets are at risk because there is no specific treatment for viruses.
Common Questions Regarding Vaccination When do we start vaccinating our pets? Puppies and kittens are highly susceptible to infectious diseases, particularly as the natural immunity provided in their

1 year. However, there are others that run out after 12 months. This means that your pet should receive a vaccination every 12 months, but it may contain different components each time.
How many injections will my puppy/kitten need?
I have an adult pet that hasn’t had a vaccine in years. What should I do?
When starting a vaccination course, all cats and dogs initially require 2 or 3 doses of vaccine, usually a few weeks apart. This primes their immune system to protect against infection, but to maintain that protection, they will require a “booster” injection once a year thereafter.
If a pet has gone longer than 12 months without a vaccine booster, their protection has probably lapsed. We recommend re-starting the vaccine course of 2 injections as soon as possible in order to reestablish their valuable immunity, especially in the older pet.
Are boosters really needed every year? Yes! It is true that the vaccines against some diseases produce immunity in the animal that lasts longer than
What about Rabbit Vaccines? Rabbits need to be vaccinated against two fatal diseases, Mxyomatosis and the less well known Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD). Vaccines can be started from 6 weeks of age. A
variant of RHD, known as RHD2 has recently emerged in the UK. This requires a different vaccine to protect against it, so talk to your vet about whether this would be necessary for your rabbit. For more information about animal vaccinations, please contact us pop in for a chat with one of our friendly team.

How to make a pencil case With the start of a new school year, many of us think of getting more organised - so why not create your own roomy pencil case to start you off on the right foot! You will need: 4. Ensure that the zip is open and fold the piece over, with the zip running along one long edge and the fabric lined up along the other three edges. Pin in place (approx. 1cm from the edge of the fabric) all around the three fabric edges
2 pieces of fabric each measuring 28cms x 17cms 25cm zip Thread Scissors Iron Ruler Pen/pencil Embellishments
2. Now take your zip and on a flat surface, place the ironed edge of the fabric against the length of the zip, leaving a gap of approx.. 0.5cms between the edge of the fabric and the zip. Pin in place along the zip and repeat with the other piece of fabric on the other side of the zip.
1. Find a long edge of one piece of material (this will be the top edge of your pencil case), fold 0.5cms over onto the wrong side and iron in place. Repeat with the other piece of fabric.
3. Machine stitch or hand sew a neat line of stitching following your pins as guides. You have now sewn your zip in place in between both pieces of material.
6. For extra strength, sew around the three edges again, leaving a slight gap in between the first line of stitching. Now snip the two bottom corners off the spare fabric (taking care not to cut your stitching!) and turn the pencil case right side out
5. Now sew the three edges in place following your pins as guides and making sure that you start and begin your stitching at the zipped edges - taking care not to create any stitches inside the zip.

n IT HOME HELP
Russell Isaac offers IT support
21
Russell Isaac owns Easy PC, a friendly personal, one-toone computer coaching service in clients’ homes in the Downend, Mangotsfield, Staple Hill and Kingswood areas. With over 20 years IT experience in a wealth of different areas, he helps users, particularly older people, get what they want from from their PCs, tablets and smartphones. He is also a web designer/builder, photographer, father of two and keen sportsman.
I
HAVE touched before on how technology, despite feeling like it left many of us miles down the road, is, paradoxically, often easier to use now than at any other time. Probably the best example of this is the 'tablet', a device which I am seeing more and more of my older clients turn to with great success. This go-between device, larger than a smartphone and smaller than a laptop, is turning out to be the perfect solution for those that want to reap the benefits of being ‘connected’, but worry that they aren’t ‘technically minded’ enough. So why are they becoming so popular with with older people?
To advertise, contact Gary on 07799 461169
Firstly, they are so simple forget computer boxes, monitors, keyboards, cables etc - their simple, lightweight, portable design, immediately ‘feels’ a much simpler proposition. Wirelessly connected to the internet, they can be used anywhere, anytime. Switch it on and even the most ardent technophobe is forced to admit that a tablet is very intuitive to use, thanks to its simple touchscreen. Suddenly, communication opens up. Keeping in touch via email/text, sharing photos, or even sharing free, live video calls with friends/relatives around the planet, can all be achieved with ease. Access to information becomes easy as surfing the web becomes
Email: sales@emersonsgreenvoice.co.uk
painless and hassle-free. And research reports other benefits for those with ageing conditions - tablets are helping those with eyesight problems read books more easily, and are proving to assist with memory, social and mobility skills in a number of ways. For many, tablets are certainly proving a real cure!

n LYDE GREEN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION n NEWS Working together to bring our community results Alongside organising events to bring the community together, the Lyde Green Community Association also works collaboratively with various local partners to make Lyde Green a great place to live. Our partners include representatives from local authorities, the Consortium of Developers, Housing Associations and others. In July we held the quarterly partnerships meeting, for the LGCA and its partners to come together and discuss issues in Lyde Green. There have been lots of unresolved issues in Lyde Green so we agreed to write a joint letter to South Gloucestershire Council’s chief executive to request some extra help with issues such as School Square and the delays with the opening of Lyde Green Park. The LGCA and its partners have since received a reply and we’re happy that the issues we raised are not only being dealt with, but a representative from South Gloucestershire Council’s Major Sites team will also now be joining our partnerships meetings to help speed things up in future. We’ve also had news that... Lyde Green Park is open! We’re very excited that since our letter, the park has now officially opened! Thank you very much to all our partners who helped us to push this forward and get it opened as quickly as possible for everyone to enjoy! Are you a member? All residents in Lyde Green can become a member of the Lyde Green Community Association. Members receive updates first so it’s worth joining! We’re working on an online membership form to make it easier to join, but until then, email us with the subject line “Become a Member”. Can you help us? We’re a very small group of volunteers so please get in touch with any skills or experience you can offer. We’ll be looking for a secretary to cover maternity from December. We’re also busy developing the new Lyde Green Community Hall, planning events, fundraising, and more, so we need you! Mood-boosting cafe at library DO you feel a bit lonely? Do you think you would benefit from a little exercise or learning something new to get you out of a rut? Are you due a little ‘me’ time? If the answer to any of these is ‘yes’ and you are free on Friday mornings, then you could try the new Moodboosting Café at Emersons Green Library. It will run once a month, on the last Friday of each month, from 11am-12 . It will give you the chance to chat with other people, learn new things, have a go at ‘mindfulness’, and hear about easy ways to get more active. Each month there will be a different idea to help you improve the way you feel. It will be a very relaxed drop-in session, with
refreshments available. The idea has the support of Community Connectors and Public Health. The first session is Friday September 29, 11am. For more information contact: Emersons Green Library Emerson Way BS16 7AP 01454 868006 Emersonsgreen.library@ southglos.gov.uk

Huge accolade for diddi dance’s Emily A YOUNG woman from Lyde Green who runs pre-school dance classes has scooped an award for her growing number of recruits. Emily Norman runs diddi dance Bristol, part of a national franchise which offers funky dance classes for boys and girls. During a conference for more than 40 franchisees throughout the UK, Emily was honoured in the category for the biggest growth. Emily, who is one of the youngest franchisees at 25, said: "I am so happy to win this award, it is an honour for your work to be recognised by your head office. I have worked really hard this last year to build my business and will continue next year." Diddi dance classes are designed to build confidence, coordination, rhythm, fitness, gross motor skills and social skills in tots from the age of 16 months up to five years. The sessions cover a variety of styles, from hip hop to country through to salsa and rock and roll. Emily started as a teacher for diddi dance Bristol and when the chance came up to take over the franchise she took it. Since then she has gone from running a few classes to 20 all over Bristol including sessions in Emersons Green, Bromley Heath and Yate. Emily said: "I used to teach after-school dance and musical theatre to children and stumbled across diddi dance by chance.I became a teacher for diddi dance and three years ago decided I would take over a franchise. I started off with no business knowledge so it's been hard a new learning experience but I love working with pre-school children. No matter how hard it's been, working with children makes up for it." Emily has also won an EWIF (Encouraging Women Into Franchising) award in the Young Woman in Franchising of the Year category in May 2017. She has also recently achieved her gold accreditation with the Children's Activity Association. For more information, visit www.diddidance.com

Mangos’ Tom to tackle half marathon manager in memory of son Oliver quits MANGOTSFIELD United have had a rocky start to the 2017-18 season - and it’s led to manager David Mehew quitting the club. The resignation was announced on Twitter on Sunday August 20, the day after the Field lost in the FA Cup preliminary round to Odd Down FC of the Toolstation league. Mangotsfield suffered a 5-0 home defeat to Salisbury in their opening match in the Southern League Division One and also lost their second game at Taunton 1-0. A statement on Mangotsfield United’s Twitter account said: “The club can confirm this morning, and it is with regret, that manager David Mehew resigned after yesterday’s defeat to Odd Down FC. “Everyone at the club would like to thank David for all his incredible efforts and wish him well & good luck for the future.” The following day, another social media statement said that the club skipper, goalkeeping legend Steve Phillips, was taking temporary charge of the first team while a new boss was sought. Mehew, nicknamed Boris, is a former professional striker with Bristol Rovers, Leeds and Walsall and had been manager at Gloucester City before taking charge at Cossham Street two years ago.
A DAD from Emersons Green is preparing to tackle the Great Bristol Half Marathon in memory of his son Oliver, a talented sportsman who died last year at the age of 18. Tom McGowan will join forces with daughter Heather for the 13.1-mile run to raise money for the charity Epilepsy Action. Oliver developed cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism after suffering from E. coli meningitis when he was a baby. But his disability did not stop him from living life to the full and achieving sporting success. Oliver played football for Cerebral Palsy England Development Squad and was the third fastest 200m runner in the UK in the Under 16s T37 Paralympic Team. He died last November at Southmead Hospital of complications after being admitted following an epileptic fit, just as he had taken up a place at the National Star College in Stroud. Now his dad Tom, aged 49, and sister Heather, 22, a languages student at Bristol University, are going to fulfil one of Oliver’s long held ambitions to run the Great Bristol Half Marathon on September 17. Tom and Heather are now in full training for the run and have included the weekly Pomphrey Hill Park Run as part of their preparation. The pair are being supported by staff at Longwell Green Active

The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (also known as Children of the 90s) is an internationally renowned research study, following the health and development of more than 14,000 families with a child born in Bristol and the surrounding area between April 1991 and December 1992. Researchers have used the data collected over the last 25 years to help answer important questions on key health issues, including asthma, childhood obesity, and dementia. Holly from Staple Hill (featured) is one
of almost 4,000 young people who have already attended the most recent data collection clinic, Focus@24+, and taken part in a series of cutting-edge tests, including blood pressure, liver and lung function checks. Now, with the Focus@24+ clinics drawing to a close this autumn, the Children of the 90s team is keen to hear from anyone living in the Emersons Green Voice area who was born in or around the city in 1991/2 and would like to play their part in building an even more detailed picture of the health of their generation. To find out more, please call 0117 331 0010, email info@childrenofthe90s.ac.uk or visit the website: childrenofthe90s.ac.uk.
Questions and Answers from Holly Name: Holly Age: 26 Lives: Staple Hill Why are you proud to be a Child of the 90s? We are helping with not only ground-breaking research, but also advances in medical science. I'm also happy that, due to the study's success, funding for other studies has been extended, and my daughter now gets to be part of Children of the Children of the 90s (COCO90s). It's a lovely thing to share across generations! What is your favourite childhood memory of taking part in the study? I only started taking part during my 20s as my mum didn't originally sign me up. Several of my school friends were part of the study, and were always so excited after coming back from clinics that it made me want to take part - they sounded interesting and fun! I signed up later because I saw the potential in the study. I signed my daughter up to COCO90s as I wanted her to be part of it as early as possible and hope she finds the studies as interesting as I do. Why did you choose to attend a Focus@24+ clinic? This was my first clinic so I was excited to finally be taking part! What was your experience of the clinic?
It was a great day, from having different types of scans to learn more about the body, getting breakfast and snacks throughout the day, and taking the memory tests - which really do test your mind! What have you enjoyed most about being part of Children of the 90s? Just generally taking part and learning about yourself and others. It's great to know you are helping. I also know that someday my information might help save lives and that makes me very proud to be included. What research discovery are you most proud of? The study has led to so many amazing discoveries which I'm sure many people do not realise have been because of Children of the 90s. These include putting babies to sleep on their backs to prevent cot death, and how using peanut oil in baby creams can cause allergies - this now has to be included as a warning on the label. Both of these are huge discoveries that are now given as standard advice to parents. What advice would you give someone thinking about taking part? Do it! It is a great day (or few hours) - everybody is so lovely and friendly, you find out lots of interesting information and you only have to do what you feel comfortable with!

n PETER'S VISION
Every day's a school day for us WELL I trust you have had a fine summer, we certainly have. This new school term is an exciting one for us - our youngest starts school. There has been a lot of fun had trying on new uniforms, findings trousers that fitted in June and will still fit in December and perhaps even next June, (or am I just being a bit optimistic hoping they will last that long?). The first day at school photos we have are amongst my favourite; the proud beaming smile worn with a look of excitement and joy and also notable as perhaps the last time we will see the uniform looking so clean and well presented! Are we ever too old to learn,

well I hope not. I went to a talk by Sir Clive Woodward this year, who has not only played rugby for England, had a career as an amazing sports coach but is also a successful business coach. He describes the best people he works with as sponges - always willing to learn more about doing what they do better. I think this culture of willingness to learn is good for us all. If you agree, well how about a few things to ponder? Many, many more parents take their children for a dental check up than take their children for an eye sight test. Both are NHS funded for under 16’s - if you are in the minority who take your children for an eye sight test then well done. The rest of you, ready? Here we can teach you a thing or two. Learning is thought to be around 80% visual for young children, so even a small defect in your child's vision can have a notable impact on their learning. The signs of a child having trouble with their vision include; excessive eye rubbing, watery eyes, sitting close to the TV or electronic device, clumsiness or unexplained headaches. If a child complains of blurred vision then they definitely should be visiting an Opticians! If your child has reading or learning difficulties then our

extended eye exam for children is a great place to start. This thorough & in-depth assessment goes above and beyond the NHS sight test and can reveal signs of visual stress which may need a coloured tint /overlay to improve reading performance. We also offer Vision Therapy assessments, (sometimes called Behavioural Optometry), where we spend extra time assessing the intricacies of your child or youngster’s visual system. Following detailed assessment, a personal visual improvement treatment plan is established for your child, the results of which can be truly amazing. To book an extended eye exam, for yourself or your children, or to discuss other specialist services we offer, please call 0117 962 2474 or 0117 965 4434, book via our website, or you are very welcome to pop in to our practices in Henleaze or Fishponds and say Hi! We look forward to seeing you soon!

AS always we had an enjoyable August meeting. It was great fun trying to play Picture This whilst Answering That! Looking forward to September, we are delving into a hard hitting topic when Nick Gazzard will be coming to talk with us about bullying and abuse. Immediately this may make some ladies recoil, it isn’t the usual easy going meeting we tend to be used to. Nick is the father of Hollie, a 20-year-old hairdresser who was killed when her ex-partner stabbed her at the hair salon in Gloucester she worked at. You may remember the story. Understandably, this isn’t going to be a regular social evening, however, if as a result of Nick’s talk we can help just one person it will be worthwhile. We are fast approaching the last
quarter of 2017, what a diverse and productive year so far. We welcome women of all ages and from any area, you don’t have to live in or around Mangotsfield to join us. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors. You can find out more by emailing mangotsfieldwi@gmail. com or looking at our website: www.mangotsfieldwi.org.ukYou can also follow us on Twitter @ mangotsfieldwi or check out our Facebook page.

BEECHMERE BELLES WI WE have been making the most of the summer months, enjoying an enlightening talk by Whitehall
Garden Centre experts in July who demonstrated some perennial planting ideas and answered the many questions posed by members. In August we were due to find out more about Nordic walking and we will begin to turn our thoughts towards our autumn programme and our approaching third birthday celebrations, when we will be announcing our plans for meetings in 2018. As ever, we are keen to welcome new faces to our meetings which are held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7.30pm at Emersons Green Village Hall. Please do come along to say hello.

Help for teenagers SCHOOL staff in South Gloucestershire are to take part in workshops this term to help them support children and young people’s mental health. The NHS and council in the district are working with the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families to provide the two-day training programme for school mental health leads. The aim is to build links between schools and the local CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) and to ensure that school staff know what help is available locally for young people. The training is due to be delivered to schools in the north and south of South Gloucestershire. If you would like any further information or have any questions, please contact Kate Archibald using katearchibald@ nhs.net.

IF you are lucky in your job then there can be times in your life when momentous vocational events happen. August 2017 provided another such time for me when out of the entire world I was fortunately selected to be one of six chiropractors to work at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in London. To be one of the final few that make it to these types of events takes a mixture of post-graduate education, experience and the type of personality that gets on with people. I have lots of extra training and experience behind me but if you listen to my wife it’s the personality that still needs some work … well that’s her opinion! The World Championships also gave me a chance to stay with one of my oldest and best friends, Stefan Prince, for the week. Stef
and I went travelling together around Southern Europe when we were 18 and I had forgotten his weird ability to be able to get up, shower, dress and leave the house with his teeth clean within 10 minutes … it’s truly incredible to witness and made me revaluate my whole wake-up routine! The day before I started I picked up my ‘Runners’ kit' which was high quality Asics gear, although the tops were a very bright pink. After getting used to the shirts we were required to wear, I have come to quite like them and have even worn them in the clinic at work since! Day one started at 8am and I was thankful to see that everybody just goes straight to the canteen for a bacon roll and a coffee. The hot food supplied for breakfast and lunch was actually very good and varied each day which really helped as I got further through the week. So after a quick bit of fuel we made it back to the poly clinic
for a bit of orientation. The poly clinic was well stocked with open plan treatment beds, taping, an ice bath and leg recovery room (the latest in tech - air pump massage leg sleeves), private consultation room and a diagnostic ultrasound room for soft tissue injury scanning. We had physiotherapy, sports massage, chiropractic and osteopathy available for the physical therapies team. There was also a full pharmacy, GP, ultrasonography, sports medicine and nursing facility. The clinic was about 6 inches from the warm up track and when you weren’t working it was impossible not to see all the stars of the track and field. It was quite an experience just to watch them train, let alone treat them. Soon enough the first athlete came through the doors. Now I cannot say who they were or where they were from but I can say that we were very unlikely to treat the huge and highly funded countries

like the USA, GB and Jamaica teams etc as they brought a lot of staff with them but we did still treat some real stars from the athletics world. Luckily for me, the first athlete came in asking for a chiropractor. It was a nice simple case of a female 100m runner asking for a check over after a long flight and a bit of a manipulation. After we completed her history and examination I noticed that she had significantly reduced power through her left hip flexion and right hip extension which is quite a common pattern. The coach who was observing was quite concerned and I could see that he didn’t want to upset the confidence of his athlete at this late stage. I explained it was OK and that we could easily fix it. Sure enough after a quick chiropractic treatment we had her at full power all over and she and the coach were delighted. They were so happy that they proceeded to send every athlete from their country in one after the other and before too long the word spread and I was flat out with work from enthusiastic athletes from all corners of the world. Now the advantage of working at a poly clinic such as this is that I could work (like we do at Cleve Chiropractic and Next Step) as a team, so once I had done my work I could refer to a top physiotherapist for some physio work and taping and then on to the sports therapist for excellent massage treatments. I must say that as a
health professional, the working environment was as good as it gets and wonderfully enjoyable. As for the athlete, it was the perfect experience that they expected at such a big event. After the initial rush of the first few days and as more and more events passed, the poly clinic became less frantic and we settled into a steady flow. If I wasn’t busy I would help putting ice in the ice baths or helping people into the recovery pumps. As the week went on I made lots of friends but nonetheless eventually my time had to end and I had to pass the baton of chiropractic on to another colleague to cover the 7am-3pm shift. I was sad to go but to be honest when I finished I was tired all the way to my bones. You don’t realise how much effort and mental energy it takes to do such events. It was amazing and one of the best if not the best work week of my life but I was looking forward to getting home and seeing my family. Now it is back to reality with a jam-packed clinic life, Bristol Rovers matches, the world’s strongest disabled man competition, writing this blog, organising a ski trip for the whole of the chiropractic profession in the UK, being secretary of the Royal College of Chiropractors Sports Faculty, British Chiropractic Association meetings and of course playing ‘which child can wake Daddy first’ each day… but you know what? I wouldn’t change it for the world…
