Jobs joy as National Composites Centre expansion gets go-ahead A MAJOR expansion of the National Composites Centre at the Bristol and Bath Science Park in Emersons Green has been given the go-ahead. The centre develops the next generation of materials for industry and councillors were told the extension was crucial to the development of new aircraft wings and would affect thousands of other jobs in the wider area.

Councillors voted unanimously to approve the plans after being told that the area could lose jobs to France if the scheme did not go ahead. The council’s strategic sites delivery committee was told concerns about the impact of the new building on the landscape and a nearby farm were outweighed by the benefits to the public. Convenience store wins approval A LONG-awaited convenience store in Lyde Green has been given the go-ahead. Sainsbury’s submitted plans for a single-storey convenience store with 374sq m of floorspace and 254sq m of retail space, associated service yard, ATM cash machine and 15 car parking spaces (including one disabled space) for customers in September last year. It will be located on Willowherb Road, in the vacant land next to the Lyde Green Community Centre at the top of Thistle Close, and the store will also have a corner entrance with stepped access and a raised walkway from the car park. During the consultation period, comments from residents were largely positive, with many stating it was a much needed amenity in the local area. However, concerns were

also raised by different groups, including Emersons Green Town Council, in regards to the creation of an alleyway between the community centre and the convenience store, which they believed could be subject to antisocial behaviour. In response to these concerns, Sainsburys has proposed the installation of CCTV to cover the alleyway, as well as the entrance area of the store and the proposed cycle parking area. The planning application was approved by South Gloucestershire Council on January 11, with conditions which included no deliveries apart from newspapers being taken at the site outside the hours of 6am to 11pm. A Sainsburys spokesman said the company hoped to open the store later this year.

Beauty queen to stage charity pageant for children A LYDE Green resident is organising a charity pageant for children in order to raise funds for a charity that is close to her heart. Jasmine Jade Lines has been modelling locally for four and a half years, and decided to submit her application to take part in the Miss Diamond United Kingdom beauty pageant last year. She was named Miss Bristol Diamond for 2019 in November. The Miss Diamond pageant is now in its fourth year, and one person represents each city in the different categories: Classic, Mrs/Ms, Miss, Teen, Junior and Mini. The winner of each category at the UK finals in April will go on to the Miss Regency International finals in Las Vegas in June. Alongside Jasmine, eight year old Seren Gibbs, from Lyde Green, is also competing in the pageant as Miss Bristol Junior Diamond. After hearing of Jasmine’s success, Seren’s mum Cody contacted her as Seren wanted to get involved with modelling, and Jasmine suggested that she should submit an application too. As part of their fundraising duties before the finals, Jasmine and Seren have organised a Disney themed quiz, and Jasmine has also decided to hold a local fundraising pageant for children aged between two and 12 at Lyde Green Community Centre, on Saturday February 16. All proceeds apart from the hall hire fee will be donated to

SANDS, a local miscarriage, stillbirth and infant loss charity Jasmine is passionate about supporting. The pageant will be split into four categories: Tiny Miss aged two to four, Little Miss aged five to eight and Junior Miss aged eight to 12, plus a special category for boys. There will be two rounds – fashion and evening wear – and Jasmine is keen to reinforce to parents that they do not have to go out and buy anything special. Suggested outfits include a princess dress or whatever the children fancy, along with a day outfit and any props. The children will need to be dropped off at the Community Centre at 9am on the day where they will be taught all they need to know for the event. The pageant will start at 5pm, and parents are welcome to stay for the whole day or just come for the show at the end. Food and drinks will also be provided for the children on the day. There is only space available for 10 children in each category, and each category will have one winner who will receive a sash, crown and small toy prize. Jasmine, who works as a member of Easyjet’s cabin crew flying from Gatwick Airport, said: “I’m feeling confident ahead of the UK finals, but at the moment I’m focused on raising as much money and awareness for SANDS as possible. They are not a cause that you know of until you need them, and that needs to change, because

Jasmine and Seren

they rely on donations to keep running.” Entry costs £10 per child, and parents will be allowed to attend the show for free, while siblings or grandparents will need to pay £5 for a ticket. A professional photographer will produce a

video of the pageant that can be bought on the day. To find out more about Jasmine’s fundraising pageant for children and the Miss Diamond United Kingdom pageant, email missbristoldiamond@gmail.com

Westminster sex assault charge A FORMER political researcher for an MP has appeared in court accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a Parliamentary building. Parents learn vital lesson A PARAMEDIC couple from Lyde Green have held life saving skills sessions for parents in their community. Harriet Jones and her partner Martin Davis have lived in the area for four years. Harriet has been a paramedic for five years and Martin for seven, and both work in local GP surgeries within South Gloucestershire. As part of her job, Harriet trains other medical staff on basic life support skills once a year including CPR, mouth-tomouth resuscitation and how to use defibrillators. She said: “I thought it would be great to do something for parents at the community centre. Martin and I both have an interest in basic life support, and the more people that are trained how to do it, the better.” Harriet and Martin ran two sessions for parents last month, publicising the event on the Lyde Green Local Facebook group. In total, 25 people booked places on

one of two sessions. They were taught adult and child basic life support, which included how to assess if someone is in cardiac arrest, how to do CPR on adults, children and babies, how to breathe for them, how to resuscitate, and what to do in the event of choking. The group had the chance to use Annie dummies during the sessions, as well as learn how to use a defibrillator. Harriet said: “Attendees included parents with young children, young mums and

grandparents from Lyde Green and Emersons Green who wanted to know what to do if something happened at home. We even had a new set of parents with their seven-day-old baby. “I don’t think anyone there had actually seen a defibrillator before or knew had to turn one on, and we also talked about where the local ones are and discussed the possibility of fundraising for one at the Community Centre too. “We think it’s really important that people have this training, because as of 2020 it will be part of curriculum in schools, so it makes sense for adults to know it too.” Harriet and Martin have also organised a second adult and child basic life support training session at Lyde Green Community Centre on Saturday February 9, at 9am. The cost is £15 per person, and to find out more and book your place, email harrietj@hotmail.co.uk

n NEWS MORE than 100,000 jobs have been secured by the approval of a huge new factory, it has been claimed. South Gloucestershire councillors have unanimously approved the expansion of the National Composites Centre at the Bristol and Bath Science Park in Emersons Green, after being told that the area could lose jobs to France if the scheme did not go ahead. The centre develops the next generation of materials for industry and councillors were told the extension was crucial to the development of new aircraft wings and would affect thousands of other jobs in the wider area. The council’s strategic sites delivery committee was told concerns about the impact of the new building on the landscape and a nearby farm were outweighed by the benefits to the public. Planing consultant Matthew Halstead, who represented applicant Bristol University, said: “The National Composites

Centre is a fantastic success. It’s a global leader in composite technology and has created over 340 high-skilled jobs. “It is the largest composite centre outside China and is critical to the local and national economy. The new workshop is the next chapter. It will facilitate the Wings of Tomorrow programme developing the next generation of aircraft wing. “Many, many jobs will be at risk if this doesn’t proceed in South Gloucestershire. “Everything should be done

to insulate the region from the risk of downturn.” Mr Halstead said the development should not be at the expense of proper planning but warned: “If planning is refused, Wings of Tomorrow will be lost overseas. It will likely go to France. I sincerely hope that doesn’t happen.” There were concerns about the impact on the listed Newlands Farm, which had been protected from the National Composites Centre by a green buffer, and on the landscape.

But a planning officer told councillors that was outweighed by the “kudos” of the development, which a report to the meeting said will secure more than 100,000 jobs. The extension will be built on the car park, and a replacement car park will be created on area described as scrubland. The officer added: “If this was to be refused the potential impact on jobs is significant – they could be lost abroad. The benefits far outweigh the disadvantages.” Proposing approval, Cllr Ian Boulton said the development would improve the look of the “scrubby” site. It was unanimously approved. The extension will provide 4,823.5sq m – more than one acre – of workshop space and 1,334.5m2 of office space. The Bristol and Bath Science Park is owned by South Glos Council and Bath University.

including Cyprus, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. The Bristol Military Wives Choir was set up in January 2014, and is rare in being a tri-service choir with partners of Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force personnel. Many of its members live within military housing in Emersons Green, including those currently serving, veterans, mothers, sisters and daughters, as well as Ministry of Defence support workers from Abbey Wood and the surrounding military communities. The group rehearses at the United Reformed Church in Mangotsfield. For the birthday celebration members invited representatives from organisations which have supported them to a rehearsal and party on January 15. During the evening they performed a number of songs from their repertoire, including tracks from the 2018 Military Wives Choir Album Remember, which was recorded to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War One, as well as Wherever You Are which was released by the original Military Wives Choir in December 2011 and became that year’s Christmas number one. As part of their birthday celebrations the group also featured as BBC Radio Bristol’s Band of the Week, where they

recorded 10 tracks at the BBC Radio Bristol Studios, and appeared on BBC Points West. Treasurer Sarah Fowkes said: “We have 35-45 members, depending on postings in and out of the area, and we are used as a support network by many of the ladies. Singing is extremely uplifting and good for morale, and we are a very tight knit group. “Every new posting for a military wife is as daunting as it is exciting, but knowing that you have a choir to go to in your new location, thanks to the MWC network, where you know the songs and even some of the people, can be a real lifeline.” Later this year, the choir will be performing at the Mid Somerset Choral Festival in Bath in March, at Clevedon Pier later in the summer, and will also be taking part in Armed Forces Day in June. To find out more about the choir and to keep up to date with their upcoming performances, visit the Bristol Military Wives Choir Facebook page.

Mayor's vow on park and ride CAMPAIGNERS appear to have won their fight to save a community farm near Frenchay from being turned into a park and ride car park. Sims Hill Shared Harvest’s home west of the M32, between the Metrobus junction and the Avon Ring Road, had been earmarked as the only viable option for the project in the West of England spatial plan, a blueprint for development. But after a plea for support from the farm, Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees has promised it will not be bulldozed. He said: “We’re not building on that land. That’s vital land.If we have a park and ride, it needs to be out by the M4. “It doesn’t make sense to bring it so close in. Park and ride needs to service the city. We have no intention of putting it so close to the city.”

Vandals start fire on bus BUS operator First is working with police to try to identify vandals who set fire to a number 49 bus on its way to Emersons Green. Flames were seen on the back seat of the bus as it passed through Staple Hill on the evening of January 16. It has been reported that a passenger on the bus used their steel toe-capped boots to smash open the glass case containing the vehicle’s fire extinguisher before using it to put out the flames. A First West of England spokesman said: “We can confirm there was an incident on the number 49 from the city centre to Emersons Green on Wednesday 16th in the early evening. At this time we believe a small fire started as a result of vandalism and we are working with the police to try to identify the culprits. “All our vehicles are fitted with fire extinguishers for incidents of this kind. Our drivers are trained in their use and we are investigating the specific details of the incident concerned.”

We’re good drivers in South Glos - official SOUTH Gloucestershire’s only driving test centre has a higher-than-average pass rate. Figures from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency show 49 per cent of all learners passed their practical test at the Kingswood centre, in Station Road, between April and September last year. The average pass rate for test centres across Great Britain was 46 per cent. Kingswood test centre conducted 2,360 tests over the six-month period and 1,152 people passed. Men had a higher success rate at the centre, with 50.5 per cent passing compared to 47 per cent of women. Just over a year ago, the driving test was changed, with many observers saying the new test is tougher than the old one. Learners now must navigate for 20 minutes using a sat-nav, and explain how to test the brakes, clean the windscreen and demist their windows while driving. But at Kingswood test centre the pass rate has risen: it was 43.7 per cent in the last available figures for the old test. The centre with the lowest pass rate in

the area was in Brislington, where 43 per cent of candidates passed the practical test. At Southmead test centre, 48 per cent of candidates passed, while Avonmouth was the only centre where more than half of candidates were successful, at 53 per cent. Overall, built-up urban areas tend to have lower pass rates than rural test centres. Data from the year to March 2018 shows the number of first-time passes. At Kingswood, 46.7 per cent of people taking their test for the first time passed, with 27 learners succeeding first time, with no minor faults. Drivers taking the test can pass with up to 15 minor faults, such as not checking their mirrors at the right time. DVSA chief driving examiner, Mark Winn, said: "All candidates are assessed to the same level and the result of their test is entirely dependent on their performance on the day.We constantly monitor our examiners’ performance so they conduct and assess driving tests in accordance with the standards set. This includes the supervision of live tests."

NHS England to review Oliver’s death NHS England is to review the events leading up to the death of teenager Oliver McGowan, after a report failed to answer a key question. Oliver, who was 18, died at Southmead Hospital from the side effects of an anti-psychotic drug, which he was given despite warnings of a previous adverse reaction. Since his death his parents Paula and Tom, from Emersons Green, have been trying to ensure lessons are learned and no one else has to go through what has happened to their family. Oliver had epilepsy, a mild learning disability and highfunctioning autism. He was fit and healthy but after a partial seizure in October 2016 he was given the anti-psychotic drug olanzapine, despite both Oliver and his parents telling doctors he had

Oliver McGowan previously had an adverse reaction to such medication. The drug caused massive, irreparable brain damage and he died 20 days later. A report was ordered under the Learning Disabilities Mortality Review (LeDeR) to find out if there were mistakes in

Oliver’s treatment that the NHS could learn from. But Paula and Tom were left in “shock, horror and disgust” when they found that, between drafts, the answer to a vital question – was Oliver’s death potentially avoidable – had been removed from the report, which was produced by the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group. Paula said: “Our initial reaction was of absolute horror – how they could fail to answer that vital question? We were absolutely shocked to find what we did. “The first draft of the report, the language was quite strong. But by draft three the language had changed. There was no explanation – it was disgraceful.” Paula, who had already been invited to discuss Oliver’s case with ministers, MPs and

senior NHS leaders to inform future training, contacted NHS England, which has launched a review. She said: “The most important thing for us is to get Oliver’s report done properly – it must be done independently of the local trusts.” A spokesman for Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group said: “The process of preparing the review report is iterative and the independent panel responsible for the review refined their responses over time following an initial multi-agency meeting. “The drafts shared with Oliver’s family reflect this, including the panel’s ultimate conclusion, having considered the complexities of Oliver’s case, that they were not able to say categorically whether his death was avoidable or not.”

n NEWS AN award of £1.2million in extra government funding to South Gloucestershire Council for children with special needs has had a mixed reception. Over two years, funding split into equal instalments of £616,630 has been allocated to South Gloucestershire by Education Secretary Damian Hinds to help alleviate the financial pressures on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The Conservatives who run the council have welcomed the money, saying their leader Toby Savage and Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall had met Ministers, including Mr Hinds and Schools Minister Lord Agnew to help secure it. But opponents said the money fell far short of what was needed to address the underfunding. South Gloucestershire has been named as the lowest funded authority in the county per pupil but through the introduction

February, 2019

School special needs funding ‘welcome - but not enough’ of the government’s National Funding Formula (NFF), the gap between the highest funded and lowest funded has diminished, South Gloucestershire receiving an additional £8 million over two years – the 13th largest in the country, out of 157 areas. Councillor Savage said: “We are grateful to the government for seeing the need to invest further in our most vulnerable young people and are delighted that South Gloucestershire is seeing the benefits. “But while this is very good news, there is much more work to do, and my fellow Conservatives and I will continue to press the government for

further funding and ensure our children are given the best possible start.” But Labour said the money came against a backdrop of years of falling funding. Labour's education lead Councillor Gareth Manson said: “The Tory government has failed to invest in our young people. The Independent Institute for Fiscal Studies states that, in real terms, per pupil funding has fallen by 8% since 2010. South Glos has been one of those authorities which has received the smallest proportion of this shrinking funding for a number of years. Now, after the intervention of South Glos Tories, it is the worst. “We have a £3 million annual shortfall in the SEND budget, and we welcome £0.6million a year to make up a small part of this shortfall, but to hear Luke Hall MP describe this as a ‘funding win’ beggars belief.” A spokesman for the Fair Funding for all Schools South Glos campaign group said: “The government has been rattled by the fierce campaign being waged by SEND parents and Fair Funding groups like ours. As a result it has given a small

Email: sales@emersonsgreenvoice.co.uk

and inadequate grant to all local education authorities including South Glos. “It is well known, and came out in shocking detail in the recent BBC School programme which covered some South Glos academies, that SEND provision is grossly inadequate and it is an area where needs are growing whilst real term funding is decreasing. Additionally, since many children with special needs go unidentified, adequate funding for the main budget is equally a priority for children with and without special needs. “We are dismayed that South Glos Council sees this as something to be welcomed when it falls so far short of the sum that is needed for basic requirements and when we know the extent that children, parents and teachers are struggling.” Fair Funding for All Schools South Glos is an informal campaign group and it is holding its next public meeting on Thursday February 7 at Shireway Community Centre in Yate at 7pm. Everyone is welcome. To find out more information, join the Fair Funding for All Schools South Glos Facebook group or email fffassglos@gmail.com.

Cheers! Cleve brings back cider festival CLEVE Rugby Club is bringing back its annual cider festival to replace a dance music event which sparked complaints from neighbours. The club has announced that West Country music legends The Wurzels will headline the festival at its Hayfields ground in Cossham Street this year. The event will take place on August 24, taking up the late summer slot which had been taken by the South West Dance Festival for the past two years. Last year’s dance festival brought a series of complaints from people living in neighbouring streets, who complained about noise, rubbish and anti-social behaviour from people attending it. A group of Mangotsfield residents raised a petition of 150 signatures opposing the dance festival and a group attended a meeting of Emersons Green Town Council to complain, with one councillor advising them to oppose the licence application for any future dance festival.

The club, which also hosts the annual Mangotsfield Festival, has issued a statement explaining its decision to turn down the dance event, which was organised by an independent operator, for this year. The statement said: “This decision has been made primarily due to the disruption the (dance) festival caused within the community. “Cleve RFC is a community sports facility but also a business and one that has seen a decline in members and an increase in

costs in recent years. It is therefore imperative that we hold events to raise funds to support the club.” The club said the cider festival “proved very popular in previous years and caused no disruption to local residents”. The cider festival will run from 2pm, with support acts and timings to be confirmed closer to the event. Tickets are already on sale, with an early bird offer running through February. The club has published a behaviour policy including restrictions on unaccompanied children, a ban on glass bottles, legal highs and food and drink brought onto the site. For more details and tickets, visit clevefestivals.co.uk online. The club is calling for volunteers to help out on the day of the festival. Anyone who is interested in lending a hand or who wants more information should email info@ cleverugby.co.uk.

n NEWS A TEENAGE member of Downend’s Air Cadet unit has won a top award. Cadet Warrant Officer Charlotte Moss, from Emersons Green, won the Mike Kendall Trophy for the best cadet in the organisation’s Bristol & Gloucestershire and Devon & Somerset Wings. The 19-year-old first won an award as the best female cadet in the Bristol & Gloucestershire Wing before going on to take the regional trophy. Flying Officer Emma Henderson RAFAC, Officer in Charge of 2152 (Downend) Detached Flight, said Charlotte had been recognised for her continued commitment to the Air Cadet Organisation. Over her time in cadets she has attended the Royal International Air Tattoo, various wing camps, gained qualifications in first aid and BTECs in Aviation Studies and Public Services. Last summer she represented the Air Cadet Organisation on an international exchange to Australia. “On top of all of this she

Also in attendance was Wing Commander Dave Cox, Wing Commander of the Bristol & Gloucestershire Wing and the Central Sector Commander, Squadron Leader Jim Brimble. The Downend DF meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings and cadets take part in a variety of activities from flying, gliding, shooting and fieldcraft to sports, music, community assistance and social events. It has around 30 cadets from the local area and new recruits are always welcome. The organisation is open to 12 to 17-year-olds, although those who are 12 must be in Year 8 at school. For more details email 2152df@aircadets.org.

The Air Cadets of 2152 Downend Detached Flight with Cadet Warrant Officer Charlotte Moss front centre and Group Captain Eddie Cole has been an example to all the cadets that she has encountered and been a role model to lots of cadets over the years,” said Fg Off Henderson. “I am so proud that CWO

Two tonnes of goodwill from foodbank donors ORGANISERS of a foodbank have thanked people from the area for their generosity in helping to brighten Christmas for almost 200 people in need. Resound FoodBank in Blackhorse Road collected almost two and a half tonnes of food from dozens of groups and hundreds of individual donors. Among them were Emersons Green teenager Billy Neale, who was featured in January’s Voice after deciding to spend the £100 his mum had put aside for his birthday on a donation, and young pupils of Stanbridge Primary School, who collected donations after a visit from a foodbank volunteer who told them about its work. The total amount donated by the community during December was 2,437kg: 1,621kg was given directly to the foodbank, based at the Resound church, and 816

kg came via the collection box in Sainsburys’ Emersons Green superstore. People are referred to foodbanks when emergencies mean they are unable to afford to buy food, for example because of being made homeless or unemployed. Families can be referred to the foodbank up to three times every six months, although for most it is a one-off. At Christmas the foodbank collected and distributed extras such as cake, chocolates and presents to brighten the festive season for people who needed its services. Shopping list • 1 litre UHT milk • Tinned green/broad beans • Tinned mushrooms • Tinned chicken in sauce (not curried) • 1 litre fruit juice (UHT not chilled)

Steve Riches and Claire Collins, joint coordinators of Resound Foodbank, with donated food supplies In total the foodbank provided for 198 people – 97 adults and 101 children – during December. The last Friday before Christmas saw 26 vouchers being presented, to help 106 people, including 56 children. Joint coordinator Steve Riches said: “As ever, we are • Twin microwavable sponge Puddings • Brown/tomato sauce • Deodorant – male/female/unisex • Children's toothbrushes/ toothpaste • Shaving foam • Toilet rolls • Squash

indebted to the generosity of the community which provides us with the food necessary to provide this service.” This month the foodbank has a new shopping list of requests for donations, which can be made at the foodbank between 9.30am and 12.30pm every Friday or at the permanent collection point at Sainsburys in Emersons Green. The Resound foodbank is a branch of the Yate and Chipping Sodbury Foodbank. For info call 0117 305 0969 or email info@ resoundbristol.co.uk.

'Strong case' for new motorway junction

Out of this world!

MOTORISTS will have to wait until the end of the year to hear whether a new junction for the M4 will finally be built. Campaigners have been pushing for a new link to connect the motorway to the Avon Ring Road at Emersons Green for more than 20 years. South Gloucestershire Council formally backed a link at Westerleigh Road – known as the “western option” last year, after people living near Pucklechurch protested against alternative routes which would carve through green belt land near their homes. If the scheme gets the go-ahead the new Junction 18a would cost around £428million and be built by 2025. But a council spokesman said an announcement was now expected in “late 2019”. That means it is likely residents will have to wait until the government’s next budget for a decision. The council’s cabinet member for highways Colin Hunt has said the authority had made a strong case for Junction 18a and it is now being considered by Highways England in its next “route investment strategy”, which covers 2020 to 2025. The spokesman added: “When undertaking the study work, it was estimated that construction may take place between 2025 and 2026, although this would be subject to confirmation by Highways England and the DfT during further scheme development work.” It has been claimed that the junction would help 5,700 jobs and generate £449m for the economy.

THE first masterclass at IKB Academy gave invited Year 11 students from other schools the chance to investigate the world of particle physics. IKB’s principal Debbie Gibbs, a passionate physics teacher, led the day, which included a series of activities and presentations, culminating in the group making their own cloud chamber to see the tracks made by cosmic rays from space. Mrs Gibbs said: “Even though the tracks were quite elusive, the students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to see how inspiring A-level physics can be.” Participants’ comments included: “ It was lots of fun and I enjoyed the dry ice”; “It was relaxed and fun and I also learnt interesting stuff”; “It was very informative and interactive”. IKB, which has a science and engineering specialism, is holding a series of masterclasses on

Saturday mornings to showcase its range of A-level and Btec Post-16 options, in which students are achieving great success. A product design session has already taken place, in which participants had to design a crazy golf course. Other classes are planned in maths, engineering and biochemistry to enable young people to find out more about studying these subjects at a higher level. If you are in Year 11 at any school and would like to attend a masterclass, please contact IKB Academy for an invitation.

Scouts tell MP their plans for the future A SCOUT group has outlined its future plans for expansion to the local MP. Chris Skidmore, whose Kingswood constituency includes Mangotsfield Scout Group’s base in Northcote Road, was told about its plans for a major refurbishment and extension. The scout building is a former Methodist chapel and is more than 150 years old. It is currently used by 150 young people every week and in need of updating. The project will include a new kitchen and toilets, as well as an extension, which will enable the group to store camping kit and hold meetings. The group has thanked a number of sponsors who have helped to fund the project: Aviva, Emersons Green Town Council, Gloucestershire Masonic charity, Lloyds Banking Group, South Gloucestershire council and waste contractor SUEZ.

Chris Skidmore MP meets Mangotsfield Scout Group leaders Chris Amos (centre) and Simon Bud

As it plans for the future the group is also looking for additional leaders.

Anyone who would like to help should contact group scout leader Simon Budd on email at

n REFLEXOLOGY WITH RACHAEL The health benefits of de-cluttering (and reflexology!) THE start of a new year is a great time to de-clutter and clear out things we don’t need anymore. It can feel incredibly cleansing and satisfying to let go of unneeded items and begin afresh in a more organised and tidy environment. I have been inspired to have a 2019 de-clutter myself after watching a TV program called ‘Tidying Up’. Marie Kondo, the presenter, is a Japanese lady who helps people tidy up and organise their homes. You might be thinking, “Isn’t that all a little bit over the top making a TV show about tidying up?”. Well, maybe not. Did you know that clutter can actually cause our bodies to experience stress? Studies have shown that when we (and women in particular) walk into a cluttered environment our cortisol levels (that’s the stress hormone) skyrocket! So, even if you are not consciously aware of it, clutter could be making you feel very tense and uneasy. Clutter also drains your sense of wellbeing. When you look at your messy belongings it can cause you to feel less energetic and emotionally overwhelmed. There is even a study that indicates that clutter results in us having an unhealthier diet, because the stress it generates can lead to comfort eating – the last thing any of us need after the Christmas break! I certainly feel much happier after saying goodbye to my unwanted items. I feel calmer, more energetic and very positive – ready to embrace 2019 with renewed enthusiasm! After all, less ‘stuff’ also means less tidying up and therefore more ‘me time’, which was my single goal for the New Year. Just as our homes benefit from a de-clutter, so do our bodies. Reflexology has been shown to help cleanse the body of toxins, balancing our energy and also calming our minds. This positive impact on energy flow is surprisingly similar to the effect of tidying our homes. Maybe 2019 is the year you could try both? n MANGOTSFIELD RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION ABOUT a year ago a few Mangotsfield residents, concerned that the village was losing its identity, asked a question: Are there enough local people who care enough to make forming a residents, friends or community association worthwhile? The answer was “yes” and with that, the Mangotsfield Residents Association was formed, with some 20 residents attending the first meeting. Its aims are: • To provide a focal point to enhance the social, cultural and educational needs of the community of Mangotsfield. • To raise funds for the benefit of

the community of Mangotsfield. • To work with other local statutory bodies and volunteer organisations for the benefit of the community of Mangotsfield. It is a voluntary group which looks to promote the identity of the local community, identify specific needs and attempt to address them through voluntary work or through money raised via local fundraising, donations, sponsorship, and grants. So the acorn has been planted and, whilst there is a long, long way to go before it becomes a mighty oak, it has sprouted and has a few leaves. Examples include tidying up the Dame School site by removing shrubs and planting bulbs sand, with a longer term plan with South Glos Council to renovate the site to make it a usable public space for the village. A local history exhibit at Mangotsfield Festival and a new Neighbourhood Watch for the Burley Grove area have been set up. In the coming year the association hope to do more, a lot more, whether through specific projects such as more planters, a Mangotsfield Christmas tree, updating the war memorial with missing names, updating the

n PETER'S VISION IT was an exciting day this one, I and half our team took to the road to visit a frame buyers emporium. It was an early start mind, we left our fine city before dawn and headed east as far as I’ve been in a long time - London Docklands. On arrival, and with coffees, we quickly set about the task in hand. Divided into two teams, aiming to see as many glasses as we could, off we set. A WhatsApp group helped the process as images of the fine, the fancy, the superb and of course the downright ridiculous started whizzing around. After a few hours of enthusiastic searching, networking and discussion we had our shortlist. There were great British designs (we’ve got several of these already), the fantastic Tom Davies made to order from London (got lots of these too!) and some truly whacky designs (er no, we do not have these!). The new collections we have chosen for you will be landing and on display by the time you are reading this. Just call in to either practice to have a look for yourself! Now whilst we didn’t achieve anything as incredible as growing seeds on the far side of the moon, we did secure an exclusive launch of a vibrant new collection coming soon to this Opticians near you - look out for more details

later in the year! On our return journey I felt like quite the tourist. My trusty phone navigation system sent us on a sight seeing tour past many of the London sights. It was a super end to the day driving past The Tower of London, through Trafalgar Square, up the Mall, right in front of Buckingham Palace and along Constitution Hill. You may have noticed that this blog brings up a half century, it has certainly come around rather quickly. It really does seem like just a few months ago that I first put pen to paper - well okay, in a computer sense; I can type faster than I can write & it’s legible too this way! I’ve had quite a few kind comments about the blog so thanks to all of you for taking the time to read

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Chris Skidmore writes for

Emersons Green Voice

AS THE local MP and Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation, I am very proud our local area is strengthening its role at the forefront of aerospace and advanced engineering. I am delighted to see the Bristol & Bath Science Park in our constituency go from strength to strength, thanks to a major expansion which was announced last month. The planned developments will see the National Composites Centre at the Science Park being expanded to facilitate the ‘Wing of Tomorrow’ programme, in collaboration with leading industry partners such as Airbus, which will ensure faster and cheaper wings manufacturing and assembling. This comes as our local area recently celebrated how funding boost from the Government’s Local Growth Fund has helped South Gloucestershire Council and the University of Bath to purchase our Science Park, securing its

long-term future as a world-class centre of excellence for research and development in our region. The recent approval of the Science Park’s extension is also great news for our local community as it will ensure our area will continue to lead the world in future aerospace development. Great local investment plans are also moving forward for Kingswood, and I’m delighted to see almost £500,000 of funding from the Love our High Streets initiative has already been released to support Kingswood High Street, named as a priority location for local regeneration plans. I am pleased that £248,000 released from this fund has now been matched with £215,000 of funding from our Conservative-run South Gloucestershire Council. This investment will be used to provide our High Street with a new Green Machine street sweeper, 30 new litter bins, and extra money for street cleaning, responding to local

residents’ demands for a tidier and cleaner High Street. I am also delighted to hear about plans to develop a Heritage Lottery Fund submission for investment in our treasured Kingswood Park, as replicating our recent success with the multimillion-pound transformation of Page Park in Staple Hill would lead to a similar transformation of what is a vital and prominent part of the High Street. As your local MP, I was also encouraged to hear about the workshop that has been recently held with local businesses and groups to progress plans to improve access to digital skills training for residents, and look forward to funding eventually being released to support the Tabernacle’s restoration. These improvement and regeneration schemes will help address some of the issues that the community has regularly raised with me as the local MP.

n AROUND THE WIs BEECHMERE BELLES WI IT WAS lovely to see returning members of Beechmere Belles and new members in our January meeting. We all caught up about our Christmas and New Year parties, get togethers and general festive fun. Thank goodness there where more than a few of us that over indulged, I always feel it’s just me. We had a brilliant and informative talk about colour analysis, so those of us that can’t quite squeeze into anything at the moment can happily head off to the shops to top up our wardrobes confident of what suits us the best. In honour of the colour theme, our raffle this month was anything red, our February raffle is books, everybody loves a good book. Motown the Musical was our planned outing and everybody that went had a great evening, voices were a little hoarse after all the singing, even though we had ensured they were well lubricated in the bar before it started. Our brilliant committee has

organised a great year of talks and outings, Gary Barlow’s Calendar Girls has proved very popular and we have already sold nearly all of the tickets for the July performance at the Bristol Hippodrome. May sees us taking a leisurely stroll to Warmley Tea Rooms for tea and cake. Let’s break this down - walking, good for you, fresh air, good for you, cake, well that can be walk We have a self defence talk planned for our February meeting, I’m looking forward to learning how to be more aware of my surroundings and not be intimidated by situations. April sees us learning a new skill for our craft event which is decoupage. Last year I learnt how to needle felt and made decorative eggs to hang around the house at Easter. Christmas saw me making Christmas baubles to hang around the house on anything that that stood still long enough, literally. This year I can already feel that all my family and friends are looking forward to my new found hobby. If this is the year that you have

decided to get out more, meet new people and have some fun please come and join us on the fourth Thursday of the month at Emersons Green Village Hall, everybody is welcome. Hope to see you there. Beechmere Belles Emersons and Lyde Green SHORTWOOD WI OUR January meeting was a sombre occasion as we remembered Catherine, who sadly passed away just after Christmas. Catherine was a founder member of our group back in 2007 and has been our President since the beginning. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her in the WI and community, and we send our condolences to her family and friends. On a lighter note, we had prebooked Philamena, who came to demonstrate armchair Zumba. We took part in a vigorous 45-minute armchair workout, which was not only very physical but also tested

our mental ability, as we tried to keep up with the routine. The evening was finished with a rendition of Happy Birthday for the birthday girls and a cuppa. We welcome new members; you don’t have to live in Shortwood to be part of our friendly group. We meet on the second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm in the room behind the chapel on Main Road. Racing ace Jake wins championship MOST youngsters dream of becoming a famous footballer when they grow up. Not Jake Davis - he's decided on a much more dangerous sport. The 11-year-old motor racing fanatic has put all fears aside and is dreaming of becoming the next Lewis Hamilton. After receiving his first kart for Christmas in 2016, Jake joined the Llandow karting academy near Cardiff and took part in his first race in June 2017. The karting ace has just finished a great 2018 racing season which saw him become the 2018 South Wales Honda Cadet Champion as well as winning the Celtic Champion Trophy. He also made his MSA racing debut in November at the Clay Pigeon circuit in Yeovil where he finished as top novice. Jake has been attending the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone for the last six years

with both his grandfather and dad Paul, who are both huge motor racing fans. Jake, who splits his time between his dad in Downend and mum in South Wales, will now move up to a more powerful class, Rotax Minimax, as he prepares for this year's Nigel Mansell MSA Kart Club Championship and the South Wales IKR Club and Celtic Championship. Paul said: "Jake has always been a keen sports person, playing for Mangotsfield junior teams and many other sports at school but his ultimate ambition is to go as far in motorsport as he can. "He's a massive fan of Formula 1 and watches all the races, supporting his hero Lewis Hamilton. He would love to drive for the McLaren Formula 1 team." It seems sporting prowess runs in the family - Jake's nine-year-old brother Finley is

Call for cricketers CARSONS and Mangotsfield Cricket Club is launching winter training for under-9s at Mangotsfield School on Friday evenings, starting on February 1. The club, which is based at Pomphrey Hill playing fields during the season, also has under 11, 13, 15 and 17 sides along with its adult sides. The under-9s sessions are open to any child in year 3 or 4 at school and cost £20 for the eight-week course. Pre-season training for the club’s other age groups is now under way, . goalkeeper for both Cardiff City FC development U10 squad and Coalpit Heath. Paul said: "I'm extremely proud of Jake and his younger brother Finley. We all love sport, with all its highs and lows, and all regularly attend and support Bristol City and Bristol Rugby. "They both are so ambitious and driven at a young age. It's brilliant to see that they are prepared to work so hard to try and achieve their dreams and you never know with hard work and a bit of luck, they might come true." Paul, who acts as his son's mechanic, said Jake is now looking for sponsorship to help him achieve his ambition. "Although Jake would love to be a Formula 1 driver, it is an expensive sport and is a struggle with no sponsors. With more financial support he could achieve greater success." Valentine’s Heart sweet bag

Could you be a snow buddy?

With Liz Freke of Hattie’s Hooray’s With Valentine’s Day approaching, why not surprise your valentine with a handmade bag of chocolates or sweets? You will need: piece of fabric measuring 15cms x 20cms piece of felt measuring 15cms x 20cms Small oddment of fabric to contrast Thread to complement the fabric Fabric scissors Sewing machine Dressmakers pins Safety pin 50cm Piece of ribbon Ruler Sewing needle

8 Taking your safety pin and ribbon, pin the end of the ribbon and thread through one hole you have just created, all the way around the channel and out of the other snipped hole. 4 Take both pieces of fabric and pin together with right sides facing each other. Machine stitch around one long edge, across the bottom edge and up the other side leaving a 0.5cms seam allowance.

9 You can now fill your lovely bag with chocolates, gather and tie the top and treat your valentine to a handmade gift this Valentine’s Day. 1 Take your piece of felt and fold in half lengthways, then pin the open edge in place. Either freehand or by drawing directly onto the felt, cut a half heart shape on the crease of the fabric, starting approximately 3cms from the bottom edge of the fabric.

5 Still working on the reverse of the fabric, fold over a hem of 3cms from the top edge and pin in place. Now machine stitch this edge in place and neaten off loose ends. You have now created a channel for the ribbon to be thread through.

AN SOS has been put out to help vulnerable people this winter. Sirona Care and Health is looking for snow buddies who own 4x4 vehicles to help staff reach people in bad weather. The not-for-profit organisation is setting up a team of volunteers to make sure no one is left at risk should it snow. Bev Mason, Sirona’s locality manager for Severnside, said: "We had a fabulous response from people last February and March when the area was blanketed with heavy snow. It worked so well we are setting up a team of volunteer drivers for 2019. We need assistance to help staff get to work or to undertake visits to vulnerable people in our care." Sirona will be offering financial support for business use insurance/mileage and a DBS check will be required. If you can help please email askSirona@sirona-cic.org.uk

n SPORT

AFC Mangotsfield defeat local rivals AFC Mangotsfield finished 2018 in fine style by beating local rivals Mangotsfield Sports 2-1 at Blackhorse Road playing field. In a game which was mainly dominated by AFC, they found themselves trailing 0-1 at half time, a combination of missed chances and a great finish by Samuels of Sports made all the difference. However in the second half, AFC gradually took control and fine finishes from Bamford and Hocking earned the three points and bragging rights for The Colliers. At the time Downend Voice went to print, the New Year has seen just one game so far and another win away to Ashton, goals from HamiltonDunn 2 and Stalley gave the Colliers a 3-1 victory which has seen AFC climb to fifth position and in touch with the leading pack In fact all five AFC sides are doing quite well, in their respective leagues. Any one looking to break into adults football, change of club or maybe looking to manage a side? AFC Mangotsfield offer senior football for varying abilities, come and join the Yellow and Black army. Mangotsfield Juniors, ages five to16, are also looking to take on more players. For both junior and senior contact Pete Brown on 07916 339918 or email petebrwn@yahoo.co.uk Pete Brown

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE IT is always interesting to hear from my patients about what it is that motivates them to keep fit and exercise. One patient has been extolling the benefits of CrossFit to me and encouraging me to give it a go! She told me that she has noticed that that many ‘more mature’ people (ie over 50/55) seem to stop or reduce the amount of exercise that they do at precisely the time when exercise becomes more important to maintain strength, mobility, flexibility and general health and wellbeing for as long as possible! My patient is now in her 60s (though in complete denial about it!) and has always done some form of exercise but has only been involved in CrossFit for the last three years. She was beginning to find a conventional gym rather dull and tedious and she was then encouraged to join Valesco CrossFit

in Bristol. Initially she felt that it would be far too demanding and everyone would be younger, fitter and stronger but was quickly proved wrong! She is really excited about the difference it has made to her – keen to explain how she CrossFit is different. It is all about strength and conditioning and built around functional movement. There is a range of classes all of which are coached and are all scaleable to suit every ability level and the intensity and the difficulty increase with improvements in performance. She was keen to promote Valesco CrossFit where she says “The coaches are fantastic – they are highly skilled and knowledgeable and extremely encouraging and motivating! I really enjoy being part of a class and working hard together in such a supportive environment. It is hard work but it really is great fun

and I always feel the benefit…… it has made me realise that I didn’t really push myself before! I have now been doing CrossFit for nearly three years and can honestly say that I am now fitter and stronger than I was 10 years ago! It is exciting to see how much I have improved and to continue to challenge myself. I can strongly recommend a visit to Valesco CrossFit to find out more….as it says on their website….’ Valesco CrossFit is passionate about its members and the community and the coaching team are committed to helping individuals achieve their goals in a fun and supportive environment.’ Why not give it a go and try a taster session?” She sounds so enthusiastic, I might even try it myself! www.valescocrossfit.com Valesco CrossFit, Unit 1, 40-46 Albert Road, Bristol BS2 0XA
