‘ Young people have been let down over skate park’ A FATHER who helped raise £100,000 for a skate park in Emersons Green has accused South Gloucestershire Council of failing to keep promises over its upkeep. Gordon Clapp, from Mangotsfield, wanted a lasting memorial to his son Jamie, who was only 13 when he was killed in a plane crash in 2007. Mangotsfield School pupil Jamie and his friends loved skateboarding and BMX riding, and Gordon campaigned to help secure money from local councillors, South Gloucestershire Council and the Big Lottery Fund's Peoples Millions partnership, won after a public vote. The concrete skate park opened in 2011 with a memorial garden, bench and a print of Jamie’s shoes. The council agreed to inspect and maintain the park, which Gordon regularly visits. But the BMX track next to it is now unusable, as the ramps Turn to Page 11

Convoy sets off to test mpg figures A CONVOY of vehicles set off from ALD Automotive’s Lyde Green head office to test motor manufacturers’ published miles per gallon and and emissions figures. Twenty petrol, diesel, electric and hydrogen powered cars took a 250-mile circular route past the RAC control centre on the M6. The aim was to test the vehicles in real conditions to prove their Worldwide harmonised Light vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) figures. The WLTP Challenge is a company car industry event hosted by Fleet World magazine and ALD Automotive. Matt Dale, of ALD Automotive, said: “Government policy is pushing companies to adopt more sustainable travel policies, and alternatively fuelled vehicles such as electric or hydrogen powered will become increasingly popular. It is therefore vital that we have all the information necessary about their performance and total running costs, and the WLTP Challenge is a great way to identify which vehicles will work for private motorists and company car drivers alike.” To find out more about the WTLP Challenge, visit: wltpchallenge. com

Petition of 6,218 names handed to council in bid to save resource base PARENTS marched and a petition has topped 6,000 signatures in the campaign to save a school's centre for disabled children. The resource base at Emersons Green Primary School enables children with physical disabilities or visual impairment to learn alongside mainstream pupils. But a review of special educational needs and disabilities provision by South Gloucestershire Council's schools forum recommended that the resource base closes after the children who currently use it have moved on. The petition calling for the resource base to be saved, which was signed by 6,218 people, was handed in to a council meeting on October 16. Nigel Varley, of the National Education Union, told councillors: “We recognise there is a need to reorganise and improve SEND provision in South Gloucestershire, however we do not accept that improving SEND provision necessitates the closure of an excellent facility. “The only motive for doing this must be financial and it will be to the detriment of the service. “LEA officers have emphasised their belief that inclusion means as far as possible including children with special needs in mainstream schools. “To dump children with complex needs into mainstream without the resources to address those needs is sheer cruelty

Campaigners say the ‘excellent facility’ at Emersons Green Primary for disabled children must be saved amounting to abuse. “It also has a serious consequence for the other children in mainstream schools and the teaching and support staff already driven to breaking point by intolerable workload and punitive performance management." The council has held meetings and online consultations with parents over its proposed changes. Almost 50 parents, pupils, staff and supporters marched through driving rain from Emersons Green Primary School to one of the meetings, held at

Blackhorse Primary School on September 30. The council is due to announce on November 4 whether the schools forum's proposals have been revised and whether they will be taken forward to public consultation. A council spokesperson said: “It was certainly helpful for officers to hear personal stories that underline the complexity of providing the right level of support locally for young people

who need extra help. "They underlined some of the challenges that we know we face in making true inclusion for all young people a reality in all our schools, not just those who already embrace it. "We have committed to continue these discussions with parents and schools as we take on board what they have said in developing new options with a view to a full public consultation.”

Council’s pledge on second primary school SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has confirmed it wants to see a second primary school built for Lyde Green. The area was dealt a blow last month when SGS Academy Trust, which last year put forward an unsuccessful proposal for an all-age school for children aged four to 16, said it was now interested only in developing a secondary school. Asked by the Voice about providing additional primary school places for the growing development, a spokesman said: “We remain committed to bringing new primary and secondary provision to Lyde Green. It is important that we are prepared for any expansion in the local population caused by new housing development and the increased demand this will have on school places. “We will be carrying out a

feasibility study for the design of separate primary and secondary phase school buildings which could be organised as separate schools, or as one all-through school if required. This approach will provide flexibility and enable us to adapt as required, depending on the outcome of any bids submitted to the Department for Education.” The spokesman said that expanding Lyde Green Primary School, which when full will accommodate up to 420 children, was not an option. “The first primary school site is not of sufficient size for expansion. We have secured land and a contribution towards the second new primary school and this will provide the additional capacity needed,” he said. “Our number one priority is raising educational standards in South Gloucestershire, and

ST. ALDAMS FARM NURSERY EST. 1973

making sure we have the best possible school facilities in place for our children and young people will help us to achieve that goal.” Meanwhile, SGS Academy Trust is continuing a consultation about its plans for a secondary school, which, as reported in the Voice last month, would have a curriculum focused on digital and engineering technology and would also allow children with autism to be educated in a mainstream setting. The proposed school would be called SGS Parkfield, after the colliery that was nearby, and if the bid to the DfE were successful, it would open in 2022. SGS held an informal community meeting at the Bristol and Bath Science Park on August 30 to outline its plans.

Afterwards, Kevin Hamblin, SGS CEO and Executive Principal at South Gloucestershire & Stroud College, told the Voice: “We have had some excellent feedback from the survey and open event evening at the Bristol and Bath Science Park. “Contributions and ideas from those events will be fed into the application and we believe it will make for a very strong, compelling case for the Government to consider. “The process is difficult and time consuming; however, we will present the best argument we can for the investment of about £20m into the education for 900 children and young people in the area.” To find out more about the plans for SGS Parkfield, visit: academytrust.sgscol.ac.uk/ parkfield/

Helping raise money for the Tommy’s charity BABIES and children in Emersons Green have helped raise money for the Tommy’s charity. The Jo Jingles music, singing and movement classes at the village hall took part in the Tracy Bees

annual Jinglethon, which aims to raise £100,000. This year the little Jinglers aged from three months to five years were sponsored to dress up as a favourite toy. Their efforts will help Tommy’s, which funds research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth. Tracy Bees, franchisee of Jo Jingles Bristol, said that 180 children and their families took part, raising more than £1,500. “It’s an amazing achievement. The boys and girls had a really fun class while also raising funds to save other babies’ lives”. n NEWS LYDE Green Community Centre (LGCC) held an official opening ceremony to mark its first birthday. More than 150 residents came along to join the fun, as demonstrations of Zumba, free face-painting, massages and mini catapault-making sessions took place in the hall, all organised by the Lyde Green Community Association (LGCA). Visitors also had the chance to enjoy some birthday bubbles too. A ribbon-cutting ceremony, led by Councillor Brian Allinson, Chair of South Gloucestershire Council opened proceedings, celebrating the success of the centre. Councillor Allinson said: “It was a pleasure to cut the ribbon to mark the community centre’s first year. It is really great to see the local community embrace their new hub and make use of its impressive facilities. Thanks to the notable efforts of the Lyde Green Community Association, we now have a thriving hub of activity that offers something for everyone.” Other guests at the event included the Rotary Club, Scouts and St James Church. Sovereign invested £25,000 in the establishment of the LGCA in 2018, funding the organisation to officially register as a charity, to produce a business plan for effective running of the centre, and to recruit a centre manager. Sovereign’s community development officer, Scott Jacobs-Lange, said: “In a new community like Lyde Green it’s vital that community facilities are run by community members. It’s a big ask though, especially as most of the work done is voluntary. But members of the Lyde Green community stepped

forward and worked hard to develop a business plan, secure funding and create a space that’s truly there for everyone. “It’s more than a place to hire; it’s a space that connects people together and helps to make positive things happen. Sovereign has been happy to support LGCA to help them reach this important milestone.” Aymie Elkins-Green, LGCC centre manager, said: “We are all so overwhelmed by the turnout for our opening event. It was great to see so many people there who have all supported our first year in different ways. The community in Lyde Green really is thriving and it’s so exciting to now look towards the future and what we can all achieve

Footballer Jennifer gets England call-up SHE started by kicking a ball about in the garden with her dad – now Jennifer Smith is celebrating an England call-up. The Mangotsfield School pupil has already played at Wembley and won cups with her girls' club side. But now she has been put

Jennifer in England training kit on the road to representing her country by being invited to an England talent camp. Year 8 pupil Jennifer, who turns 13 in November, can play as a striker, winger or in centre midfield and hopes to play professionally when she is older. She has been coached by the Gloucestershire FA Advance Coaching Centre and picked for the county under-14s side, where she is playing alongside girls a year older than she is. Her talent has now been spotted by England and she is attending the FA Girls' National Performance Camp as one of 48 girls in her age group on the

England Talent Pathway for players with elite potential. England girls' sides start at under-15 level, so the performance camp is seen as a precursor to representing the nation on the pitch. Jennifer, who lives in Kingswood with mum Louise and dad Andy, said: "I hope to play for England team one day. I watched the World Cup this year and when I went to Wembley I met (England international) Jordan Nobbs – that was good. "I used to play in the garden with my dad when I was younger and it went from there. "I love PE and playing for local club sides." Louise said Jennifer, a former Park Primary School pupil, plays for Longwell Green Juniors' girls under-14s side, and has won the Gloucestershire FA County Cup two years in a row. She also coaches younger players. She was part of the Mangotsfield School team which represented Bristol Rovers in a national tournament earlier this year, earning a Wembley final. Jennifer also plays in a mixed under-13s team for Bitton. Louise said: "There are about three other girls who are part of the team. Sometimes they play all-boy teams who rock up, see some girls and think 'this will be easy' - but it's not always the case!" Mangotsfield School head teacher David Spence said: "As a school, we are incredibly proud of Jenny's call-up to the England squad. "It's a fantastic achievement

Remembrance service A REMEMBRANCE Sunday event will be held at Lyde Green Community Centre this month. The event on November 10 will start at 9.15am with a breakfast and craft activities for children. At 11am people will assemble in School Square for an act of remembrance, two minutes' silence and prayer, followed by sowing poppy seeds donated by Lyde Green Open Space. All are welcome at the event, organised by Inspire Lyde Green, a Christian community linked to St James Church in Mangotsfield.

Lee leads 24-hr CrossFit challenge

A GROUP from a CrossFIT gym in Warmley are set to take on a 24 hour challenge to raise funds for a cause that is close to their hearts. Lee Berry lives on Siston Hill and lost his three-year-old nephew to sepsis. He has been raising money for the Sepsis Trust since then, and has now decided to take on his biggest challenge yet to raise funds for the cause. On Saturday and Sunday November 9 and 10, Lee and up to 40 members from CrossFit BS East will be taking part in a 24hour WOD (workout of the day). Hundreds of exercises will be performed during the challenge, from deadlifts to rope climbs, all against the clock as the group try to complete as many repetitions as possible. To mark Remembrance Sunday (CrossFit gyms often perform a hero workout to commemorate this day) they will be finishing with the tough ‘Murph’ hero WOD, which involves a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats and another one-mile run. Sepsis starts with an infection

that can come as a result of cuts, bites or other infections, and occurs when the immune system does not kick in to fight the infection and stop it spreading quickly round the body. Eventually the immune system response can have catastrophic effects on the body, leading to septic shock, organ failure and all too often death.

In the UK, there are 52,000 deaths from the condition each year. Lee joined CrossFit two years ago as a way to get fit, and has lost 26kg since then. He said: “Sepsis is a hidden killer but it’s very treatable if spotted early. The problem is a lack of awareness, and my nephew was sent away from the GP many

times because of this. “Almost every time I talk to people about sepsis they know someone who has been affected by it - in fact one of the ladies who is taking part in the challenge almost died of it herself - and yet it’s not at the forefront of the medical professions’ thoughts when diagnosing patients, which has to change. We lost Max because his doctors didn’t know enough about the condition, but if caught early you just need antibiotics to treat it. “I’m really nervous about the challenge as it’s going to be quite hard and we’ll be going at it at full pace too, but I’m hoping we can raise lots of money and awareness as a result Lee and the CrossFit group are aiming to raise £2000 for the Sepsis Trust. Apology over ring road traffic hell LONG delays for commuters from Emersons Green, especially during the morning rush hour, may ease this month. South Gloucestershire Council has acknowledged that a combination of road works and efforts to cut air pollution, as well as some exceptional weather, have made for miserable conditions for drivers on the A4174 Avon Ring Road and surrounding routes this autumn. As well as repairs and improvements by the council, Highways England work on a bridge over the M4 that led to the closure of the B4465 near Pucklechurch for seven weeks caused additional traffic on the ring road. That work has now finished and the road has reopened but Highways England has plans to do similar work on the bridge at Westerleigh Road soon and

the air quality experiment at Hambrook lights is continuing. A spokesman said: “We are aware of the difficulties experienced on the A4174 ring road and the surrounding areas in the past few weeks that have resulted in long delays, particularly during some morning peak periods. “There are currently a number of roadworks being carried out in and around the area, some of which are the responsibility of South Gloucestershire Council and some which are being carried out by third parties. There have also been a number of incidents including collisions, heavy rain and obstructions in the road, which collectively resulted in significant disruption. “We are aware that the recent congestion has caused major inconvenience and we apologise for this. We are doing everything

we can to ensure roadworks are finished on time and are carried out with minimal disruption to traffic. “Many of our essential road improvement and maintenance projects are due to end over the coming weeks and this will help to relieve congestion.” The Voice contacted the council after residents on social media complained of 50-minute journeys taking two hours and schoolchildren regularly being late for lessons. Michelle Sims, who commutes to work in Bristol city centre by bus, said: “I’ve had to get two buses earlier just to get to work, as it stopped taking the usual 20-30 minutes and is now 60-90 minutes instead. It has meant that I’ve needed to take just half an hour for lunch instead of my full hour to make up the time when I’ve been getting in late. It is

totally messing up my day and I shouldn’t have to leave my house at 7:30am to start work for 9am!” As previously reported, the council has been told to cut levels of toxic nitrogen dioxide at the junction of the ring road and the B4058 Bristol Road, which are above the legal air pollution limit. Under an experimental traffic order, it has stopped vehicles coming from the Bromley Heath roundabout from turning right towards Winterbourne and made access from Frenchay left-turn only, banning traffic from right turns. To comment on the Hambrook experiment, visit: bit.ly/2KIeO58 between now and February 11 2020. Anyone not online should call: 01454 863503. 'Wear your helmet or face a bike ban' A SCHOOL is banning children who refuse to wear a helmet from cycling to and from the site. Mangotsfield School will introduce the new mandatory bike helmet rule from the start of November, when pupils return from the half-term holidays. The school says it has always challenged any pupil who chooses not to wear a helmet but making it compulsory "sets an equal playing field for all". Around 100 children cycle to and from the school each day. Associate assistant head teacher Joe Bently, who is leading the initiative, said: “At Mangotsfield we encourage our students to cycle to and from school when possible. It’s a great way for them to exercise their independence and contribute towards an all-important healthy lifestyle. "That said, we are going to enforce this – if students do not follow this rule, they will

be asked to no longer cycle to school." The safety aspects of helmets, being cautious on the road and aware of possible risks from other road users have featured in recent assemblies and mentoring sessions. Mr Bently said the school felt a responsibility to ensure its students travelled as safely as possible as more of them took to

the road amid increasing traffic. He added: “Mandatory bike helmets are already an official law in certain countries and Australian research has found that helmets reduce the risk of serious head injury by 70%. "Feedback so far has been really favourable, with students understanding the risks of not wearing one and preferring to keep their independence, as

opposed to worrying too much about the interest of fashion. "One of our students even said it would be cooler to wear a helmet to school than a neck brace!” To help ease in the rule, the school is selling helmets at a discounted rate of £10, or £5 for Pupil Premium children. Mr Bently said: “We definitely feel more comfortable knowing this rule is in place and would like to thank everyone that’s been in support of the initiative so far”. The new helmet rule follows other changes to rules for the end of the school day, with all children who cross Rodway Hill after leaving the site being asked to use the toucan pedestrian crossing by the junction with Manor Road, cycling banned in the visitor car park and cyclists asked to join road traffic only when directed by a member of staff.

n NEWS From Page 1 and berms have now been overgrown by brambles. Gordon says he was told by officers that the area would be cleared but nothing has happened. He said: “There was supposed to be false grass all the way round the side of the skateboard park. There was also talk of a path through the middle and lighting, to use it in the winter. “I’ve spent years waiting for the council to keep their promise, their end of the deal.” Emersons Green Town Council is in discussions about taking over the park and nearby land on a lease but is waiting for South Gloucestershire to provide more information about the new path. Gordon said: “Whether it’s the town council or the local council, someone needs to sort it out.” South Gloucestershire Council says the BMX track was part of the government’s Cycle City project, started in 2009, but funding was pulled during

He said: “The promises made and still outstanding, for whatever reason, should be fulfilled by now. This is so important to Gordon and all Jamie’s friends, and to the youngsters who use the park.”

Slip road to ease queues at tip approved

MANGOTSFIELD'S recycling centre will be expanded, with a new slip road built to tackle queues. The tip will become the new home of South Gloucestershire's waste collection vehicle fleet as the council shuts the base in Warmley following years of complaints over smells, fumes and noise. People living near the Mangotsfield Sort It Centre in Carsons Road have regularly reported long queues on the approaches to the entrance, with traffic regularly backed up through nearby junctions and some motorists driving dangerously on the wrong side of the road to get around it. Last year residents of Siston Hill presented a petition to the council demanding action. Now the council’s cabinet has approved a £6 million revamp of waste collection services, which includes spending £600,000 to build a separate slip road to take queuing traffic off Carsons Road.

After 24 years Fabio Barbers will be refurbishing 613 Fishponds Road. Starting from the 28th October and relaunching for our Grand Opening on 25th November. During this refurb Fabio and Tom will be working from Giacomo and Sons 252 Church Road, St George, BS5 8AF with Fabio’s Brothers Roberto and Marco. This will keep an option open for clients to see Fabio and Tom whilst the refurb is happening.

Opposition councillors raised concerns that the land for the slip road was being bought “above market value”, which officers admitted in their report to cabinet. But council leader Toby Savage insisted the changes provided overall “value for money”. They also include a new Sort It Centre and Re-Use Shop in Filton, replacing a smaller site in Little Stoke. The report to cabinet said traffic queuing to enter

the Mangotsfield dump was “impacting the quality of life of residents” and trapping local motorists in their streets. It said: “The site has also struggled to cope with the demand for use by residents during certain times of the year, most notably spring and summer bank holidays. Over the Easter weekend 2019, there was a continual queue from 8am to 12pm every morning.” The report said a slip road could not be built without buying

a plot of privately-owned land nearby. It said: “The approved waste services capital scheme includes £600,000 for the creation of a separate slip road at the Mangotsfield waste facility. “The report is proposing to purchase land above market value.” A nearby field will also be bought to relocate the vehicle depot from Warmley. Labour councillor Kim Scudamore (Lab, New Cheltenham) said: “I am concerned about value for money. It is odd that we are intending to purchase land above market value. That seems like a very, very odd negotiating position." But Cllr Savage said: “I am very clear this is value for money when you consider the strategy in its entirety." Deputy leader Jon Hunt added: “Anything that can alleviate those problems should be welcomed.”

Good causes are winner at football match

SUNSHINE and happy faces shone through after a week of torrential downpours for the second annual Mango Reds v Mango Blues football match. The game between City and Rovers fans at Mangotsfield United FC's Cossham Street ground attracted a big crowd and raised more than £4,500 for charities St Peters Hospice and Special Friends Autistic Club. Organised by fundraising group the Mangotsfield

Community Association, the event on October 6 raised cash through bucket collections, food sales and after-match festivities including local DJs, a quality prize raffle and auction. Gerrian Baker, from the MCA, said: "The match itself was not one for the faint hearted. From the very first whistle both sides were eager and committed to win, cheered on by Mangotsfield’s finest, who maintained a wonderful

atmosphere throughout the whole game "The Reds came away with a 1-0 half time lead through an unfortunate own goal and the second half was just as combative as the first, with the eventual winners Mango Reds squeezing out the Blue half 5-2. "Someone casually mentioned that the ref was the busiest chap on the pitch – can’t possibly think why!" The money raised from the

event brings the total raised by the Mangotsfield Community Association this year to more than £8,000. Gerrian added: "We would like to thank everyone who made the whole day, and the whole year, possible. "It's been a hard and worthwhile journey, and Mangotsfield’s wonderful community has again collectively proved that we all stick together and people really do matter."

n NEWS RESIDENTS could soon be permitted to air their views when councillors visit planning application sites in South Gloucestershire. This follows a vote at a full council meeting last month, which saw the ruling Conservatives defeated on the issue. under a shake-up of planning processes. Emersons Green councillor Colin Hunt, who was cabinet member for planning from 2016 until May this year, said the ban on people speaking had caused problems. “I have been attacked, abused, told I am a fascist and undemocratic and been reported to the standards board because people do not understand,” he said. “Sites inspection is simply there for members to view the

site, not for members of the public to have an anticipation that we will make a decision. We are not making a decision, we are not allowed to speak to them, we have to keep our distance.” But Labour group deputy leader Ian Boulton said residents’ comments were useful. “This is not something to be afraid of, it’s embracing democracy,” he said. “I understand sometimes the public comes with an expectation that we will make a decision there and then and that’s upsetting, however it’s more upsetting when they know we are on site and they are not allowed to speak.” Lib Dem Cllr James Arrowsmith said: “I have learned so much from residents, that ability to have a resident talk you through it, explain something that is not always obvious or we don’t always appreciate as members from different wards. “Helping residents feel like they have a say and that they can reach out to their council will improve their overall satisfaction.” Oposition councillors suggested changing the order, so that site visits happened before planning applications went to committee. This was rejected as a “piecemeal” solution by the Conservatives, who proposed a full review of the new planning policies introduced last November. In a surprise result because of several Tory abstentions, members voted in favour of Lib Dem leader Claire Young’s suggestion to add a line to the Tories’ motion that could now see the reinstatement of householders speaking at planning sites. “If your real concern is residents being able to point out things that should be looked at at a site visit, then the appropriate way to fix that is for them to be allowed to speak at site visits again,” she said. Council leader Toby Savage said the administration changed its planning procedures 12 months ago so locals could engage with members earlier. However, he conceded that "there are areas to improve around public participation".

‘We’re so proud of work to preserve open spaces - do come and join us’ A COMMUNITY group that aims to protect and improve the green spaces in Lyde Green has announced their events schedule for the next 12 months. Lyde Green Open Space was set up in 2017 by residents who saw that not all open spaces were the best they could be. The group is run by volunteers and their focus includes preserving parks and Common Land for the benefit of local residents, wildlife, and all green space users. Since its formation Lyde Green Open Space has run numerous events including litter picks, gardening events, walks on Lyde Green Common, and more. Over 40 bags of litter have been collected and lots of colourful flowers have been planted in public spaces. The group has also worked with the local council and maintenance companies to achieve open space improvements, such as petitioning for better surfacing under play equipment at the park, more efficient bin emptying, and requesting that planters (instead of bollards) be installed on School Square. One of the group’s biggest aims is to improve the Common Land, which is quickly becoming surrounded by housing development. Lyde Green Common has suffered from threats of deregistration, pollution, and misuse over the past few years, which has badly affected the quality of the site. In 2018, local ward councillors provided funding to commission an Ecological Survey which gave recommendations to help improve the area. This helped to shape the group’s Annual Plan for 2019/2020, which features lots of wildlife and environment focused events for the community to get involved with: • Saturday November 9 from 10:30-12:30: Gardening around the Community Centre and on School Square, making the area

look great for Winter. • Sunday November 10 • Monday November 11: Poppy Planting as part of the St. James Mangotsfield Church Remembrance Day commemorations in Lyde Green • Throughout December: Encouraging residents to help wildlife in winter by feeding birds and more. • January 2020 (Date TBC): All about Bats – Giving the community the chance to learn about bats, plus building and installing bat boxes at Lyde Green Common. • March 2020 (Date TBC): Hedgerow Planting - 420 hedging trees are arriving from The Woodland Trust, ready for the community to plant at Lyde Green Common. The hedge plants will be planted to fill gaps and thicken the hedge, providing more native species and habitats for wildlife. • Spring 2020 (Date TBC): Big Spring Clean in Lyde Green Lyde Green’s fourth Community Litter Pick Other events planned for 2020 include Hedgehog Awareness Week in May, Beating the Bounds Walk and Picnic on May 19 and Gardening in June. Speaking about the work of Lyde Green Open Spaces, chair Cate Biggs said: “We’re really proud of what we’ve achieved so far, particularly with very limited volunteer time. The group now has a plan for the next year, including lots of gardening, wildlife and environment focused events, and we’re excited to have already made some fantastic links with local organisations. Our plan is entirely dependent on funding, volunteer time, and community support so we welcome any offers that could help. We need your support to make it happen. Please help us!” To find out more about Lyde Green Open Spaces and their plans, visit: www.facebook. com/LydeGreenOpenSpace

Drinking fountains and segregated lanes mooted for cycle track MEETINGS to gather ideas for improving the Bristol and Bath Railway Path are being held this month. Transport charity Sustrans has been given £1.1 million to improve the path, which runs through Mangotsfield, Staple Hill and Fishponds, on its final stretch from Clay Bottom towards the city centre. The path is used by thousands of people each day and is a popular route for commuting to the city centre by bike. Sustrans is calling its project a 'community-led redesign'. It wants to hear ideas from anyone who walks, jogs or cycles on the path – and from anyone who would like to use it but feels that they can't in its current state. Consultations started with

Sustrans talking to people on the path in mid-October, followed by the first set of community workshops, where people were asked what they like about the path, what needs to be changed and what must be protected. A web page has also been set up for people to contribute ideas. Key problems identified at a 'community inception meeting', attended by more than 30 people at Easton Community Centre, included safety, speed, fear of crime and anti-social behaviour, and conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists. Suggestions for improving the path included everything from signs, segregated lanes, lighting and CCTV to new drinking fountains and publishing data on cyclists' speed.

Alex Bottrill, of Sustrans, addressing the Easton meeting about the railway path's future

Sustrans project manager Alex Bottrill said there had been a steady flow of people to the first consultation meetings. He said: "Our key message is that we want as many people involved as possible and get the community involved in solving these issues. "We want to stop people feeling intimidated on the path – we have heard stories of people driving their kids to school because they are too scared to cross the path." Sustrans South of England director James Cleeton said 98% of the all complaints he received were about the Bristol and Bath path. The redesign needed to create a "safe and inclusive space for everybody", defusing conflicts and making it safe for everyone,

including disabled and visually impaired people. The next phase of the project will be design workshops consultation meetings are at Hannah More Primary School in New Kingsley Rd, St Philip's, from 5-7pm on Nov 7, at Easton Community Centre in Kilburn Street from 5.15-7pm on Nov 11 and at the Rose Green Centre in Gordon Road, Whitehall, from 3.30-7pm on Nov 12. To contribute ideas online, visit qrco.de/Onepath or join the Bristol & Bath Railway Path – OnePath group on Facebook. The design phase of the project will last between now and next March, with building work to bring in the changes taking place between October of next year and March 2021.

Seven years of work on scout hall completed A SCOUT hall used by more than 100 youngsters every week has been refurbished and extended after seven years of planning and raising £60,000. The 1st Mangotsfield Scout Group has been based in the former chapel in Northcote Road since buying it in the 1970s. The hall provides a space for around 125 young people to enjoy scouting every week, a number that has remained steady for more than 10 years, thanks to the commitment and enthusiasm of volunteers who run the group and its sections. However, the group outgrew the hall and needed a number of temporary buildings to store its equipment. Group Scout Leader Simon Budd said: “In 2012 the group leadership team decided that they should build an extension to their hall to provide additional scout meeting and storage space and that it should be permanent,

n MANGOTSFIELD RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Our community comes together and helps others

L

AST month we said that the fortnightly Coffee and Cakes at the Red Lion was going well but we’d love to see more people there. Well, it’s been pretty much “standing room only” at the last couple – long may it continue. Thanks to Clive, our chair, Mary of the Red Lion and David Blackmore for all their hard work in making it happen. The next one is on Wednesday November 6, from 10am. The harvest festival, again at the Red Lion, was a great success: £300 was raised from a cake auction and I think these words from Shirley Potts, chair of the Staple Hill Community Hub, say it all: "I would like to express our thanks for the donations of food you have made for our emergency food parcels which will meet the urgent needs of people who are in crisis. We would also be grateful if our thanks could be passed on to your patrons, who gave so generously." You may have noticed that the Dame School site is minus a couple of trees. This is all part of the bigger plan to open up the park as more of a community space. We have to admit that the overall plan is frustratingly slow going, but small steps and all that. A couple of us accompanied one of South Glos Council's arboricultural technicians around

the village, looking at locations for some 20 more trees to be planted. This is all part of the council’s plan to plant 14,000 new trees over the coming three years. Did you know that this year is the centenary of our war memorial? We plan to make mention of it at the annual parade and service on Sunday November 10. The parade will leave the Scout Hall at noon and the service will be at the memorial, at 12.30pm. There will also be an act of remembrance at the Red Lion at 11am, for those who would prefer something less formal.

We are still raising money for our Christmas nativity and lights. We mentioned this last month, and the response has been positive, but the more the better. Any money left over will be used next year to improve the local area. Speaking of next year, we are thinking of adding planters around the village and maybe our own “history plaques”, so that important places aren’t forgotten as continued housing development gradually swallows them up. But what else? We’d love to hear ideas so please get in touch. Our next meeting will take place on Friday November 1 at 7.30pm in the Scout Hall. If you are interested in getting involved then please get in touch via mangotsfieldourvillage@gmail. com or via the ever popular Mangotsfield Matters Facebook page. And finally, a recent local social media post, thanking everyone involved in charity work and volunteering, sums up what I think we all want to see: “It's so easy to forget how our community comes together and helps others. Mangotsfield is a full of kind-hearted people who will go out of their way and pull together for a cause they believe in.” Long may it continue. Chris Amos

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Chris Skidmore writes for

Emersons Green Voice

IT’S been a remarkable and unsettling time in politics recently. My daughter turned five in August, but she has already lived under three Prime Ministers. I was 16 before that happened to me. Obviously there has been one constant theme in politics over these past three years: Brexit. I know that people feel passionately on all sides about leaving the EU, but as the Member of Parliament for Kingswood, I am committed to honouring the referendum result. We asked the people to vote and said that we would honour the result. In a democracy, politicians shouldn’t get to choose which votes they think they should listen to. As a constituency, Kingswood voted to leave - and it is my duty enact this result. Since then, both Conservative and Labour MPs voted to trigger Article 50 to leave the EU. We had a General Election in which both parties said they would respect the result and vote to leave. Since then, I’ve voted three

times for a deal which would have seen us leave the EU on 29 March this year. Labour, along with other opposition parties voted that deal down repeatedly, turning against the democratic result of the referendum. Now we have asked for a General Election twice to resolve the deadlock- to take the issue once again to the people. But Labour MPs have voted it down. Of course, this isn’t the same Labour Party that has previously represented Kingswood. Jo McCarron, the Labour candidate I fought in 2015 has long quit the party to join Change UK, claiming that Corbyn’s Labour Party is an extreme left wing organisation. Putting party politics aside, we just need to get Brexit done. To deliver on what people in Kingswood voted for. That’s why, even though I hope we can get a deal with the EU. We need to leave, deal or no deal. I hope we can finally get a General Election soon - and I can confirm that I will be standing again to be Kingswood’s MP. Let’s

break this deadlock in Parliament that is holding the government to ransom and not delivering on the will of the people. Then finally we can get back to the issues that matter to people. The Government wants to increase schools spending by £14bn over the next three years - the largest ever increase in schools funding. Locally this would mean that in South Glos we would benefit this year from a 5% increase in the budget, with the promise of much more to come as we ensure every primary school gets £4,000 per pupil and every secondary £5,000 per pupil. For eight weeks I had the honour of being Health Minister - during which time I announced millions for new NHS funding for nurse training and also scanners. We also announced £1.8bn for new hospital upgrades. These are the issues that matter - but we need to get Brexit done, and get a General Election, so the people once again can decide on the future of their country.

Row over £1m councillors' fees SOUTH Gloucestershire Council spent just over £1 million on councillors allowances and expenses last year. Between them, the authority’s 72 councillors received a total of £1.027m in 2018/19, according to the council’s annual report. The top earner was Toby Savage, the leader of the Conservative-led council, who took home a total of £36,169 – the basic allowance of £11,637 for carrying out his ward duties in Longwell Green as well as a special responsibility allowance of £24,531 for being both the leader of the council and the cabinet member for schools, skills and employment. But Mr Savage's allowances sparked a row as Labour argued that two other paid roles – a £13,000 allowance for one day a week as deputy West of England Mayor and an undisclosed amount for working part-time for Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore – meant he was "regularly and often absent from his fully paid elected role without offering to reduce his Council pay accordingly". Labour group leader Pat Rooney said: "Our residents are being short changed as he is obviously not committed to ensuring that his top priority is our valued residents and communities.” The council's Conservative group hit back, saying being council leader took up a

“considerable” amount of time beyond traditional working hours. A spokesman said: “The role is required to oversee all aspects of the council’s activities and is traditionally given a higher allowance as a result. Despite this, it is still a considerably lower allowance paid than to council leaders and mayors in other parts of the region.” Bristol’s elected mayor Marvin Rees receives just over £70,600 per year, a salary which will rise to £79,500 after mayoral elections in May 2020. As well as Cllr Savage, who gave up a full-time career to focus on leading the council, 29 other members of South Gloucestershire Council also received a special responsibility allowance last year. These included Jon Hunt, who got £11,831 on top of his basic allowance for taking the cabinet portfolio of children and young people. The leaders of the minority political groups, Labour’s Pat Rooney and Claire Young for the Liberal Democrats, each received £8,146 in special allowances. Only 29 councillors made expense claims in the 2018/19 year. These ranged from £3.60 to under £1,000 in most cases and came to a total of £12,000. n PETER'S VISION

Time for lights

W

ELL we’re definitely in autumn now! I can understand the Danish Hygge I was reading about this summer. Okay I may be a year late on this trend, but as a lifestyle choice it seems like a good idea to me, what with the cold & wet weather we’re having! When we get inside, heating on, warm soups to eat and relaxing with family it does feel like the right place to be after a fun day at work and school. It’s perhaps no surprise that the thing that struck me was the importance of the lights we choose for our homes. Soft candle light is great for relaxing, chatting with friends or family, but not for homework or reading those important letters we’ve been sent that day; these need a brighter

option. I definitely see an increase this time of year in requests for help with reading vision. Often one of the first questions I ask is about the light you read with at home. Even a bright bulb in a lamp shade isn’t enough for some of us to read by, so maybe it's time to reach for the classic anglepoise light again! I read recently that you can even buy a Paul Smith designed anglepoise lamp - if you’ve not seen one, as you’d expect, it’s certainly adds a touch of colour to your room. I painted my own as a school DT project just a few years ago (okay over twenty years ago!). I’m pleased to say that energy saving LED bulb aside it’s still the same lamp as it was all those years ago!

Driving at night is another topic I’m discussing more these days. Glare from oncoming headlights is not going away, so it’s best to prepare yourself. We’ve a choice of options, our most popular remains our contrast enhancer - a lens that reduces the glare and sharpens your vision, both day and night, all in one lens. Another favourite are our clear lenses - these are made to be clearer from the inside out, and let you see up to 10% more clearly. And why not give your eyes the comfort and clarity they deserve? The technology is quite affordable these days, and with both of these lens options we add a years accidental damage cover as well! Whether you & your family have questions about lighting, glare protection or other eye health

& vision questions you are most welcome to come and see us for your eye care, glasses & advice. To arrange an extended eye exam or clearer vision consultation for yourself or those you love, please call 0117 962 2474 or 0117 965 4434. Appointments can also be booked via our website, or just pop in to our practices in Henleaze or Fishponds and say Hi! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Awards recognise young science talent SOME of the area's brightest young talents in maths, science, technology, engineering and maths were recognised at an awards ceremony at the home of Concorde. The South Gloucestershire Education Awards 2019 took place at Aerospace Bristol on October 11 to celebrate the outstanding educational achievements of more than 120 secondary, primary and special school pupils. The awards focused on those who had been high achievers in key stage 2 - the end of primary school - and key stage 4, leading up to GCSE, in the STEM subjects, which the council has made a priority area. Those receiving awards were nominated directly by heads and teachers of their schools. The award winners came from 60 different schools across South Gloucestershire. Winners from the Downend and Emersons Green area were: Thomas Bowen and Lily Dacey from Barley Close Community Primary; Leo George and Martha Honeywill from Bromley Heath Juniors; Ben Brain and Vivian Mageed from Christ Church Juniors; Duncan McCormick and Mel Poole from Downend School; Ethan Gibson-Stubbs and

Edie Mortlock from Hambrook Primary; George de Candole and Paige Nurse from Mangotsfield Primary; Rowley Downs and Megan Bush from Mangotsfield School; Ellis Denoon and Poppy Robb from Pucklechurch Primary; Nick Hughes and Eliana Basdeo Cravo from St Augustine of Canterbury Primary; Jason Tse and Nabila Alasow from Staple Hill Primary. The winners were presented with certificates, a £25 shopping voucher and a commemorative mug in front of an audience including parents and carers at the event, sponsored by YTL, UWE and Taylor Wimpey.

Guest speakers Tim Harrison of Bristol University ChemLabS and Rob Eastaway, an author who writes popular maths books including Why Do Buses Come in Threes? and Maths for Mums and Dads. Council cabinet member for schools Erica Williams said: “These students, their teachers and school staff have clearly worked really hard and deserve this recognition for their positive efforts. “Well done to all of our winners, who are a testament to the fact that, whatever level of study you are in, having the right attitude and putting in hard work always pays off.”

Play to boost church funds A NEW fundraising event has been announced for St James Church in Mangotsfield. The church is undergoing renovation work and to help fund the project, people have been holding events, including an afternoon cream tea in October which raised more than £1,000. Now local actor John Sibley will be staging a play called The Joseph Story (Jesus My Boy) at St James Church Hall in Richmond Road. The play will be staged on November 9 and 16 at 7.30pm each day. Tickets cost £10, the play is suitable for everyone aged 12 and over. For more information and tickets contact Sally on 0779 941 6142 or email sallysibley4@hotmail.com. The church still needs to raise £160,000 for the project, which includes flexible seating, flooring, heating, kitchen and toilets. The Grapevine, Lamb and Red Lion pubs and Mangotsfield Pre-School have all held recent fund raising events to support the cause.

Lipbalm holder keychain

Pedalling ‘to Paris’

With Liz Freke of Hattie’s Hooray’s With the days getting colder what better way to keep your lips hydrated on the go with this handy lipbalm holder keychain. They are so quick and easy to make and will fit all standard sized lipbalms, and they would also make great stocking fillers! You will need: 2 pieces of fabric each measuring 8.5cms x 10cms A piece of fabric that won’t fray, eg. Felt or oilcloth measuring 8cms x 7cms Fabric scissors Pen/pencil Pins Needle Complementing colour of thread Sewing machine Iron Piece of felt measuring 2cms x 8cms Keychain ring

1. Take your two pieces of fabric measuring 8.5cms x 10cms and, taking your iron on the reverse of each piece of fabric, fold over 0.5cms all of the way around each piece and iron in place.

2. Bring your two pieces of fabric with reverse sides facing each other and pin the top edge in place. Now loop your piece of felt over the keychain ring and sandwich both edges of the piece of felt in between the central part of your two pieces of fabric.

3. Pin in place and machine stitch across this top edge to secure the piece of felt in place.

4. Now take your piece of felt or oilcloth measuring 8cms x 7cms and place it on top of the ‘front’ of the keychain, lining it up with the bottom of the folded up hems and the sides. Pin in place.

5. Machine around these three sides which will secure the felt or oilcloth in place and also enclose the seams of the two pieces of fabric. Neaten off all loose threads by pulling them through to the back of your fabric, knotting together and using fastening off.

6. You are now ready to fasten your lipbalm keychain to your keys and pop your favourite lipbalm inside! Why not create one for each member of your family and as always, feel free to embellish in any way that you wish! See you next month for a special festive monthly make!

CYCLISTS have pedalled their way to raising £1,600 for charity at a Mangotsfield pub. A total of 83 people each took turns at a stint on stationary bikes at the Red Lion in St James Street during a weekend marathon that aimed to cover the distance to Paris. The event was organised by Mangotsfield Community Association. Member Sarah Proud said: “The cyclists got from Mangotsfield to Paris at 1am on Sunday morning so took it upon themselves to get back. Come 12pm Sunday they were 100km out and no one wanted to give up so the ride ended up going on until 1.50pm when they arrived back. We had a total of 83 different people doing a stint throughout the 24 hours. It was wonderful effort from all those involved; it really brought the village together.”

n AROUND THE WIs BEECHMERE BELLES: EMERSONS & LYDE WI SEPTEMBER was our Sewing Bee, and busy little bees we were. For a lot of us we haven’t picked up a needle to make something for a long time. Sewing buttons back on is a necessity, not a pleasure. We were extremely lucky to have Emma from the Bristol School of Sewing and Textiles, in Staple Hill, take our meeting. Everybody made lovely handsewn flowers with a button middle: who knew that button sewing was a pleasure? To be honest, some of us could have done with some plasters - needles are sharp - but we did have fun and more than a few giggles. I for one am keeping my fingers crossed that we are able to persuade Emma to come back again at some point next year. We have continued with our themed raffle prizes over the year; this month was “here’s one I made earlier”. Our members are a very talented bunch: we had gloves that had been knitted, jams, cakes and plenty of other things. A previous month we had “things I can’t live without”. I didn’t know where to start: books, chocolate, coffee, toilet rolls, my best friend (let’s not tell her she came after toilet rolls). This year has seen the Beechmere Belles being particularly crafty, only in a good way, I might add. We had an extra craft evening at short notice due to a speaker we had planned being unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances. Thank goodness we have a very organised committee, who sprang into action and managed to give us a good evening at short notice. On the theme of craft, we have a class booked for a Sunday morning in late November where a number of us will be learning wet felting - no idea either, in case you’re wondering, but I am looking forward to it. Another thing learnt, more giggles plus tea, coffee and cake, what’s not to like? Beechmere Belles have a break over the Christmas period but we do have our festive meal to look forward to. We are supporting local eateries as usual: it’s important to support businesses that make our high streets. Feed the Homeless Bristol has a special place in the heart of the Beechmere Belles and we are helping to support their Winter Warmer this year. We have plenty of bakers signed up to bake cakes for this event. Please feel free to pop in and see us, every fourth

Thursday of the month at 7.30pm at Emersons Green Village Hall. If you can’t make it this year then maybe sneak it on to your New Year resolution list. 2020 is going to be a good and varied programme. Beechmere Belles

SHORTWOOD VILLAGE WI So our October meeting was our 12th AGM which seems unbelievable. On a personal level it only seems like yesterday when I went to the very first meeting thinking, is this really for me? Well it was for me and I have to say I have not missed many meetings and I now have a group of good friends, which I would not have found if it wasn’t for our WI group. Back to our meeting, where we sang a rendition of Jerusalem, to start, accompanied by Jo on the piano. Jo then took the opportunity for us to rehearse one of our songs which will be performed at our Christmas Group Event in December. After this we went on to nominate and vote for our committee and thankfully they all agreed to stand again for another year. A round of thanks was given to our committee who work so hard to make sure our group run smoothly with exciting speakers, quizzes, events and much, much more. After the mandatory cuppa, cake and raffle, we enjoyed two quizzes, one set by Jo about our local community and the other set by Caroline was called Scattergories. We all love a good quiz!!! Our next meeting will be on Thursday, 14 November at 7.30 where we will be making Christmas decorations and also rehearsing the songs and ‘things’ for our Christmas event. There is always a warm welcome for new members and the first taster session is free. We meet on the second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm in the Shortwood Chapel which is at Main Road, Shortwood. For any further information you can contact me on millhousejoinery@aol.com with the subject heading Shortwood Village WI. Lynne Miller

MANGOTSFIELD WI THANK you to all the members who attended the October annual meeting. We have a great committee to take us into 2020, thank you to everyone who participated and made the evening

possible. I am very excited to see Mangotsfield WI celebrate 44 years. Since our inception in 1976 we have nurtured the organisation into the present and wonder what the next 44 years may bring. The programme is in the capable hands of Mary and Paula and a huge thank you to Mary for 2019. We head in to November for our penultimate meeting of 2019. James Hayden who works with the Chernobyl Children’s Life Line charity will talk to us about the charity, the children and what Chernobyl is like today. He’s recently been back there and has some up to date photos to share with us. While this will prove to be an emotive meeting, we look forward to meeting James. The Manor cup is “make a Christmas decoration”, let your imaginations run wild! If you would like to come along to one of our monthly meetings, you do not need to know anyone. We will welcome you and assign a WI member to guide you through the evening. You will be able to enjoy cake and a cuppa and start making new friends. I guarantee that you will be offered the best cake ever, you may learn a new skill too. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors for the first two visits. We have a broad range of ways to contact us, email mangotsfieldwi@gmail.com to contact the team directly. Our website gives details about meetings and upcoming events for members www. mangotsfieldwi. org.uk or you can like our Facebook page https://www. facebook.com/ Mangotsfield/ Kate Tarr

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday October 29 at 7.30pm in Christ Church Hall, North Road, Downend. If you want to come along and see what we are about, please feel free to join us and you can have tea, coffee and cake together with the chance to win a lovely prize in our raffle. In November we have a really interesting speaker, who will give us a talk on the Lives and Loves of Queen Victoria. If you would like more information feel free to contact me by email at downendwi@yahoo.co.uk. Julie, Secretary

BROMLEY HEATH WI OUR October meeting began with a warm welcome from Cheryl but sadly this would be for the last time. She’s been our president for the last three years and has done an exemplary job – no crass comments on Twitter, no awkward undiplomatic antics and certainly no threats of impeachment from our members! A fine example for others to follow. At last it was time for the identity of our new president to be revealed! Tumultuous applause rang out when Liza Smith’s name was announced – congratulations Liza. Our next meeting was due to be held on Thursday November 14 when we will be Christmas crafting and hearing from our friends at the Resound Foodbank. Would you like to experience BHWI (ladies only I’m afraid guys)? Kindly contact us on bromleyheathwi@gmail.com as visitors are most welcome to enjoy their first meeting free of charge. Margaret Hanwell

DOWNEND WI FOR our next meeting we will have a session to learn some tips on public speaking. This isn’t about standing in front of hundreds of people, it’s just about how you can remove the anxiety of this and appear confident, even when you are shaking inside! There is no role play or forced participation on this either. It’s also our AGM, where we will review our accounts and activities of the last 21 months and the committee will be voted in (hopefully).

n NEWS

Anna shares her pictures around the world A PHOTOGRAPHER from Downend has travelled nearly 60,000 miles in one year to share her pictures with people across the world – including the Pope. Anna Jastrzebska started snapping as a hobby in 2004 and decided to celebrate 15 years of taking pictures by travelling to six continents and visiting numerous countries. She wanted to connect with people from all walks of life by showing them her work, visiting large and small cities and meeting both rich and poor. Her project was called '15 countries for 15 anniversaries', although Anna managed to get to a total of 17 countries including Australia, Africa, Greece, Romania, Poland, Canada and Paraguay. The photos even reached the Vatican city, where, after a presentation of Anna's photographs to Pope Francis, they were donated to charity. Anna, who was born in Koszalin, Poland but has lived in Downend for 11 years, is by profession a business management economist but is passionate about photography, specialising in landscapes, architecture and people. The 42-year-old had to overcome numerous obstacles during her travels including a tsunami in Indonesia and street fighting in Ecuador, as well as extremes of weather. Anna packed photographs of Polish and English landscapes,

Villagers in Kenya were amazed at the luscious green Anna is pictured with Indonesian dancers who are landscapes featured in Anna's photographs holding her work hoping her project would show the world how beautiful the two countries are. Her work was exhibited in different ways depending on her location – on the beach in St Michael, Barbados; on a street pier in Brooklyn, New York; in a monastery in Romania; during a spectacular dance performance in Bali and even at a sheikh's office in Saudi Arabia. Anna, whose images have been published in numerous newspapers, magazines and calendars, said: “My goal was to reach people from different social strata; people in high positions but also those who do not always have the possibility of contact with civilization. “In Kenya, the Maasai people looked at the diversity of the Polish and English landscape with an amazing interest as they are in a country where there is only savanna-forest vegetation.

The chief of the village especially loved my picture of green meadows. He asked if it would be possible to hang it in his hut. Thus, a green landscape picture is now hanging under the thatched roof of the most important person in the Kenyan settlement.” Anna added: “My dream was

for my photographs to reach places where I would like to go but have never been. I wanted to prove to myself and to other people that there are no limits and if we want something, we can achieve anything. My project was possible thanks to the helpfulness of family, friends and strangers.”

n VETS’ ADVICE

Why do I need pet insurance?

OUR pets are a big part of our lives, so when they fall ill or are injured, providing the best health care for them is important.

Veterinary practices have access to much more sophisticated equipment than they did in the past, making it possible to detect and diagnose problems that would once have gone untreated. These types of treatments and diagnostics come at a price, leaving some owners faced with a difficult choice.

placed on that condition, after which no further payouts will be made, that particular condition will then be excluded from the policy. Maximum benefit - covers conditions up to a maximum amount - £2000 could be an example - but there’s no time limit placed on how long you can claim. Lifetime - provides a set amount of cover for veterinary fees, which renews each year in line with the renewal of the policy.

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

You think it's cold in Downend? Blog 68 IT'S going to be cold when I jet off to Lake Placid this December – but there’s no need for you to start feeling sorry for me. Anyone of a certain age might remember that the picturesque resort in New York state was the venue for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. And who could forget that was the magical time for Bristol’s Robin Cousins to write his own page or two of Olympic history, winning a precious gold medal in the men’s figure skating competition? I wouldn’t say that I’ll be following in Robin’s footsteps – noone wants to see me on a skating rink – but I will be visiting with a similar goal in mind, helping elite athletes on their path to possible Olympic glory. I’m so looking forward to offering my chiropractic skills to two European skeleton stars in Kimberley Bos, from The Netherlands, and Norway’s Alex Hansen. Both are competing at the World Championships and I’ll be on hand to help out with their training

and competition needs as they continue their countdown to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Yes, it’s a long way from Mangotsfield to Lake Placid, so how did I land this particular ‘gig’? Well, since 2011 I have worked with Great Britain skeleton ace Dom Parsons, who was training with the national squad at Bath University. Dom came over to Cleve Chiropractic seeking help for the unusual problems that skeleton athletes suffer with. He was pretty impressed with the set-up and even used our Alter-G anti-gravity treadmill to help get back on the road to recovery. I’m pleased to say that Dom went on to win a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, becoming the first British male skeleton athlete to win a medal in 70 years. I like to think we played a small part in that triumph and it was Dom who recommended my services to Kimberley and Alex – I’ll let you know how it all goes. A little closer to home, I’ve been heavily involved with the British

Chiropractic Association’s annual conference in Birmingham. This is the chiropractic world’s own version of the Oscars where a host of top awards were handed out and there was plenty of healthy discussion in the ‘script’. I have to say that we did bring a little slice of Hollywood glam and glitz to the West Midlands and it was deemed to be the best and most successful conference in the association’s 94-year history. A great cast of speakers brought us a fantastic list of subjects, ranging from serious neurological treatments to animal chiropractic methods! There certainly was something for everyone and all the chiropractors went away with some fresh and innovative ideas to share with their patients. Back in Mangotsfield, we can’t wait to open the doors on our new clinic, just across the road from our existing premises. We’re now looking to open the brand spanking new Cleve Chiropractic clinic next month, a little later than first planned. But I can promise you it will be worth

n MANGOTSFIELD UNITED MANGOTSFIELD United’s strong start to the season has evaporated somewhat in recent weeks, as several defeats have sent the club sliding down from a lofty position a month ago to 9th in the league table, as well as being eliminated from all the remaining cup competitions. The end of September saw a 2-1 home defeat to Slimbridge in the FA Trophy. Three nights later, under the Cossham

Street floodlights, the Mangos were held 1-1 at home by bottom club Basingstoke Town. The following Saturday saw the Mangos heavily beaten 4-0 away at highly-fancied Evesham United, with three of the goals coming before half time. Once again, an opposition player was red-carded for a foul and Evesham played the whole second half with only 10 men but, even then, were still able to add a fourth goal.
