Save our resource centre! PARENTS are calling on South Gloucestershire Council to save a school's specialist centre which enables disabled children to learn alongside mainstream pupils. The resource base at Emersons Green Primary School caters for 12 children aged from 4 to 11 with physical disabilities or visual impairment, giving them extra support and facilities while

they have lessons and play with other children. Parents were told at the end of last term that under a council review of special needs and disability provision in the area the resource base faced being "phased out", closing after its final intake of pupils had moved on to secondary school. They immediately launched

a campaign to save it, staging a demonstration outside. More than 5,900 people have signed a petition on the Change. uk website calling on South Gloucestershire Council not to close the site. A report to the council's schools forum said that, while the Emersons Green resource base Turn to Page 3

Lyde Green gets six extra buses an hour PUBLIC transport links to Lyde Green will be hugely increased when First connects the new estate to two of its major routes. The Bristol area's biggest bus operator has announced that, from September 15, both the 48 and 49 services will be extended from Emersons Green to Lyde Green and the Bristol & Bath Science Park. Lyde Green is already served by the metrobus m3 and m3x, Stagecoach's 86 Kingswood to Yate service and the peak-time South Gloucestershire Bus & Coach 462 to the city centre via Mangotsfield and Bromley Heath. But a spokesperson for First said the extension of the 48 and 49 would mean an extra six buses per hour serving Lyde Green and the science park. Buses would use Willowherb Road to reach the science park from the existing terminus at Sainsbury's in Emersons Green. The spokesperson said: "As the number of occupied houses in Lyde Green has increased and we have reviewed requests and feedback from customers, we now feel it is the right time to extend Service 48/49 to Lyde Green. "There is not expected to be any negative impact on reliability

and punctuality, as added resource will be used to allow for this extension." The extension will mean some changes to timetables but the frequency of services on the routes will be the same. The 48 goes to the city centre via Blackhorse Lane, Downend, Fishponds, Eastville, Easton and Old Market, while the 49 travels through Mangotsfield and Staple Hill before taking the same route as the 48 from the top of Fishponds Road. Once the changes are introduced, the first bus from the science park to the city centre will be a 48 leaving at 4.10am on weekdays, with the first service in the opposite direction a 49 leaving the centre at 4.30am. The final bus back from the city centre will leave at 12.30am and is timetabled to arrive at the science park at 1.16am, with the last bus from the science park leaving for the centre at 12.37am. From the same date there will also be some timetable changes to the metrobus m3x, although frequencies will remain the same, and the bus may divert via Stoke Lane, Coldharbour Lane and the bus gate when the M32 is congested, although it will not make any stops on the diversion route.

A demonstration at the start of the holidays drew a big turnout

From Page 1 had the most local catchment of pupils, with children travelling two miles on average to use it, it also had the second-highest cost per pupil in the area, at just under £37,000 per pupil per year compared with an average of around £25,000. The report also said that, as pupils at Emersons Green accessed mainstream lessons for most of the day, their needs "could be equally met by their local school". Parents of children currently attending the school disagreed. Joanna Cooper moved to Emersons Green from Keynsham after her 10-year-old daughter Imogen, who has complex needs, was given a place at the school. Joanna said: "Imogen did go to a mainstream school but after a short time it became apparent it wasn't going to work. "I genuinely don't know where she would have gone to school without the resource base. "This is a purpose-built

Resource centre battle building for people with physical disability and visual impairment, with not one step, corridors which are wide for wheelchair users and extra roof lights. "It would be a total waste and a shame for all these families if it were to close. Where are these children going to go?" Helen Saukuru's son Matthew, 10, has been attending the school since the age of four. Helen, who lives in Emersons Green, said: "At that point he couldn't eat on his own, he couldn't walk and he couldn't talk very much. There's absolutely no way he could have gone to a mainstream school – he needed that special provision. "In February he had an operation on his back and he had to learn to walk again. Without the support of the speciallytrained TAs, there's no way he could have done it. They have made a massive difference.

"Matthew would have to go to a special school, there would be no other option. Socially he needs the interaction with his mainstream peers and he wouldn't get that there." Riven Vincent's daughter Celyn, 15, of Staple Hill, attended the resource base. Riven said: "There's nothing at secondary level like this. While they might be physically impaired, they could get GCSEs and go on to uni with the right help. My daughter has to go to a special school now and she's not going to reach her full potential." A council spokesman said the review, which will go out to public consultation in October, would increase places for children with special educational needs and disabilities across the district by about 18. Provision for children with severe learning difficulties and autism spectrum disorder would be increased at

Lyde Green and other places would be moved closer to where families that need them live. The spokesman added: “Following the initial discussions with the Schools Forum and in particular with Emersons Green Primary School, we acknowledge that there has been some anxiety caused on hearing about some elements of the report. While we stress that none of the current proposals will impact children who currently use the Emersons Green Resource Base, nor those who are due to start in September, we are now going to allow a number of weeks to engage with those families to make sure that people understand the rationale for change; that the process is open and as detailed as possible; and importantly to allow alternative options to be put forward and considered." A final decision on the future of the resource base is expected to be made by the council's Conservative cabinet early next year.

n LYDE GREEN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION WITH the summer holidays in full swing the LGCA Food bank have been busy with all sorts of activities, as we recover from a very successful fourth annual collection Summer Sizzler. A NEW food bank collection point has been installed in Lyde Green Community Centre. Emersons Green Town Councillor Matt Palmer decided to set up the collection point after posting on the Lyde Green Local Facebook page to ask residents if they would be interested in using one. After checking whether the community centre would be able to host one, he bought the cage, which was installed on Tuesday July 30. Matt said: “The local food bank is located at Resound on Blackhorse Road, and is open on Fridays from 10am-12pm. They collect food from Sainsbury’s in Emersons Green on a Friday, and are happy to tie in these collections with one in Lyde Green. Since I got elected I’ve been trying to to organise things for the community that don’t cost a lot of money and get people working together. After seeing Resound send out their

food shopping list on Facebook, I thought it would be great to have a way to make it easier than ever for people in Lyde Green to donate. I am looking at a way to get local kids to design some signage to go around the cage to make it look more eye-catching and colourful – more details to follow soon!” For food bank details: www. resoundbristol.co.uk/foodbank

Our community centre has been lucky enough host a full programme of free events for children provided by Emersons Green Town Council. From circus skills and musical workshops to visits from the creatures of Bristol Zoo, there really has been something for everyone. We also enjoyed holding our very first Daytime Disco, which saw little ones and grown-ups alike throwing shapes to our new sound and lighting equipment. We hope to put on more of these special sessions so do keep an eye on our Facebook page for announcements. Back in May, the LGCA Many Hands group held their first C.H.A.T (Creating Happiness all Together) event, as part of mental health awareness week. The great news is that this is set to become a regular feature at the centre. Check out the display boards in the centre for all of Many Hands’ activities so far and future updates. With the end of the summer holidays looming, we look forward to what we have coming up. Make a date in your diaries for the LGCA’s annual Halloween celebrations, due to be taking place Thursday October 31, with plenty in the pipeline – keep an eye out for posters at the centre or on our Facebook page. We would also like to give a mention to the hard work of local resident Paul Flower, Lyde Green Open Space and the Eco Team from Lyde Green Primary School, who together have installed and been maintaining the beautiful flowers in the planters around School Square – we think everyone will agree that these are looking wonderful. This, and all of the work and events that the LGCA carry out, couldn’t be possible without our staff trustees and hard-working volunteers; if you’re interested in getting involved then we’d be happy to hear from you at info@lydegreenca.org (or via Facebook). Putting a bit more green into Lyde ... A COMMUNITY group has again entered a scheme that helps gardening groups clean up and green up their local area. Lyde Green Open Space, which is run by volunteers,

have entered the RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood (IYN) Scheme which assesses community participation, environmental responsibility and gardening achievement. A spokesman for Lyde Green Open Space said: “It’s a great way to introduce new groups into the RHS awards, and hopefully is a preamble for groups to enter Britain in Bloom one day. “Last year we received Level 3 - Advancing, and were thrilled. Over the past year, the group has been busy working on a range of projects from improving access and awareness of Lyde Green Common, weeding and gardening, cleaning the streets with litter picks, planting poppies for Remembrance Day 2018, and more.” In July, volunteers turned out to litter pick and weed ahead of the assessments, and 10 bags of litter and two bags of weeds were collected over the two sessions. Resident Paul Flower has also

been working hard to maintain the planters on School Square and help get the group some extra donations from local businesses. Signs have now been installed giving thanks to all of Lyde Green Open Space’s supporters: Downend Round Table, Kitto Group, GreenSquare, and Elmwood Nurseries. The spokesman added: “In particular, the group thanks Elmwood Nurseries who not only gave a generous donation to support gardening activities, but also have offered discounts and help with the plants that are giving such wonderful colour to School Square. The planters look fantastic and will continue to shine for the next few months! “Lyde Green was assessed in July by the South West in Bloom judges, and the group think it went really well! The judges told us it was uplifting to hear about the hard work happening in the community. Lyde Green Open

n NEWS A FAMILY from Lyde Green have succeeded in their fundraising campaign to buy their son a piece of equipment that is changing his life. Toni-Louise Worthington and Stephen Hardwell received £14,000 from strangers as well as family and friends towards the device to help their son, Oliver, aged three, to walk. A family fun day at Brislington Junior Football Club in July brought in another £2,500, meaning that within six weeks they had enough to buy the Innowalk for Oliver, who has a degnerative brain condition. Toni-Louise said they had been amazed at the response. “I can’t believe the amount of support that we’ve had,” she said. “I thought it would take us a long time to raise the funds and wasn’t sure whether we would be able to do it, but we’ve been completely overwhelmed by people’s generosity. “When The Innowalk arrived everyone cried, and the look on Oliver’s face told you how happy and lucky he felt. We always knew the potential of it, and initially he spent 15 minutes a day on it five days a week, and he’s now moved up to 25 minutes. He’s definitely getting stronger, and becoming more confident too, which is great to see.” The family discovered the Innowalk when Oliver attended the Gympanzees pop-up, a playscheme for children with disabilities, in April. The machine allowed Oliver to move his legs, and during one session he was able to walk 500m, something which was unheard of. The family were told that The Innowalk would

Despite everything he has gone through he is always smiling.” Stephen added: “Friends and family really got behind us. Not a lot of people knew about our situation, even our close friends because as a family we tend to just get on with things and do what we need to do. We’ve had so many lovely messages on Facebook and the Just Giving page, we were all in tears reading them. Oliver’s story has really touched so many people’s hearts – he really is one of a kind. “The support we’ve had makes you feel so humbled, and that there’s a bit of humanity still left in world. As a parent you do whatever you can for your child, and if there’s a chance it will help him, we will do it. Things can change so much, especially with the condition that Oliver has, and so we don’t know exactly what the future holds, but we will continue to do whatever we can for him.” To find out more about Oliver and his story, visit the family’s Just Giving page: www. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ myneurohero.

Community spirit helps retrieve stolen bicycle A TEENAGER who had her bike stolen as she was delivering Emersons Green Voice has been reunited with her cycle thanks to social media and a kindhearted resident. Maddie Barnett was cycling on her round on Friday August 2 and locked her bike to a lamppost at around 4pm whilst she put copies of the publication through letterboxes. But when she returned 40 minutes later she discovered her bike was gone and all that was left was the lock cable which had been cut to take the bike. The 15-year-old rang 101 to report the theft while mum Helen Buick posted a photo of the stolen bike on the community Facebook group Emersons Green Mums. The post was shared online by Adam Harrison who leads Lyde Green's Neighbourhood Watch. Maddie's mum Helen Buick said: “An hour later I had a Facebook

messenger “phone call” from local resident Angela Beard who had found Maddie’s bike abandoned between Boots and Lyde Green. Angela stayed with the bike until we could collect it. “It was good to have local residents showing such community spirit and helping to reunite Maddie with her bike.” Maddie, a student at St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School, was was also helped by her pals, brothers Tim and Rhys Harris, who helped deliver the rest of her papers. Helen said: “Having read the recent arrest of teen lads I don’t think Maddie’s bike was taken by these as they abandoned it fairly soon afterwards, although it was missing the lights and a mud guard. “I’d like to say a big thank you to all those who helped find the bike and who supported Maddie in her hour of need.”

Mining legacy: ‘no need to worry’ RESIDENTS have been invited to meet the Coal Authority to learn more about the old bell pits close to their homes in Lyde Green. The government authority responsible for managing the effects of coal mining, including subsidence damage claims, sent about 270 letters to people living in Lyde Green in July. Thirty five of those contacted have mining features within 1m of the boundary of their property while others have mining features within 20m of their home or have a number of neighbours affected. Residents were also invited to meet the authority at a series of drop-in meetings on Saturday August 3 at Emersons Green Village Hall, where they could pick up a copy of a mining report for the area and listen to a short presentation. Emersons Green town councillors Matt Palmer and Sadik Al-Hassan also attended

Matt Palmer and Sadik Al-Hassan with Simon Leeming, from the Coal Authority

the meeting. Writing on Facebook afterwards, Sadik Al-Hassan said: “The first thing to note is this that the Coal Authority consider that the works were completed properly and they say the area is safe.” Speaking to the Voice, Mr Palmer said: “Homeowners have

nothing to worry about, which is good news. The meeting was held to reassure people, and to let them know that if anything happens with their property in relation to coal mines, the Coal Authority would take action to resolve it at no cost to the homeowner, and it won’t affect

house prices either. “They also told residents that the developers have done everything that’s needed to make sure their homes and foundations are safe, so there is no danger of collapse, but that they should contact them if they have any concerns in the future.” Simon Leeming, from the Coal Authority’s mining information team, said: “It was great that we had the opportunity to meet with local residents to explain our information and what we do. “The Emersons Green area has a rich mining heritage and if a resident has any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.” Any residents who still have concerns about bell pits in Lyde Green are advised to contact the Coal Authority by calling: 01623 637 144 or emailing: MIMWorkTray@coal.gov.uk

Hambrook lights: chance to have a say

PEOPLE are being invited to have their say on changes to the Hambrook traffic lights. South Gloucestershire Council has been told to cut levels of toxic nitrogen dioxide at the junction of the A4174 Avon Ring Road and the B4058 Bristol Road, which are above the legal air pollution limit. Under powers known as an experimental traffic order, it has stopped vehicles coming from the Bromley Heath roundabout from turning right towards Winterbourne and made access from Frenchay left-turn only, banning traffic from right turns or going straight ahead. Comments can be made at bit.ly/2KIeO58 between now and February 11 next year. Anyone not online should call 01454 863503. Winterbourne Parish council’s Frenchay ward councillors – Adrian Collins, Paul Kembery, Charlie Watkins and Hugh Whatley – said the impact the changes would have on Frenchay and the surrounding area would only become clear after the school holidays, when peaktime traffic increased to its usual level, but similar changes during the Bromley Heath viaduct works, which finished last year, caused gridlock on some days and added up to 30 minutes to journey times. In a joint statement the councillors said: "This stationary traffic causes added pollution and somewhat defeats South Glos Council’s implementation of the scheme to reduce vehicle emissions at the ring road." They also said parents had concerns that the school bus to the Winterbourne Academy would be made continually late and collection times might need to be made earlier. The councillors added: "We need the junction to be redesigned, which we've asked South Glos Council to do on numerous occasions.”

New review into teenager's death AN independent review is to be held into the death of teenager Oliver McGowan. NHS England announced the new review into Oliver's death at Southmead Hospital after a finding that it was “avoidable” was removed from a previous report. Oliver, 18, of Emersons Green, died in 2016 after a reaction to an antipsychotic drug, which he was given against his own and his parents’ requests and despite medical records showing he had an intolerance to such medication. Oliver’s parents Paula and Thomas believe their son would still be alive had he not been given the drug, Olanzapine, which an inquest found had caused his brain to swell. Industry publication the Health Service Journal reported that emails obtained under freedom of information rules

Email: sales@emersonsgreenvoice.co.uk

showed the Learning Disabilities Mortality Review into Oliver's death had been changed between its first and final versions, removing a conclusion that the death was avoidable. The Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, which is responsible for funding NHS care in the region, has denied altering the report, saying that the panel producing the report was "not able to say categorically" whether Oliver’s death was avoidable. Oliver's parents welcomed the NHS England decision for a review by independent expert Fiona Ritchie and overseen by Dr Celia Clark. They said: “We very much hope that we will be listened to throughout this process and that the causes of Oliver’s death will, at last, be fully investigated."

Fuel tanks ‘meet safety requirements’ RESIDENTS were invited to meet with developers for an update on the construction of a new fuel research institute in Lyde Green. As previously reported, the University of Bath is building the world-class advanced propulsions systems facility at the Bristol & Bath Science Park, which will create 80 jobs, support 1,900 others and stimulate £70 million by 2025. In March, a group of residents contacted the Voice over concerns about the fuel storage tanks at the Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS). They said they were not told of the plans when they bought their homes, despite outline consent being granted 20 years ago. This led to a meeting between residents and IAAPS, after which Gavin Edwards, IAAPS programme manager, wrote to Pat Bere, one of the founders of Lyde Green Action Group, to tell her that the fuel tanks would be sited inside the secure compound away from public access and met safety requirements. “The types of fuel to be stored in the

tanks at IAAPS are identical to those used in conventional filling stations and the volumes are considerably lower, typically a quarter of that typically found in a filling station such as the supermarket or Shell station which are already operating close by,” he said. A second community meeting was held at the Science Park on Wednesday July 24, involving Lyde Green Action Group, other residents and representatives representatives from IAAPS and construction company Rydon. Rydon said it will aim to recruit locally for the base trades as part of its commitment to the University of Bath on local employment and apprenticeships. The firm also plans to run a series of community engagement events throughout project such as open days and visits for local schools. Rydon confirmed that the frame will be finished in mid October, before the building is made watertight in March 2020 and landscaping takes places in July 2020, and said residents will also be kept up to date with a monthly newsletter. Residents expressed concerns that work

is starting on site at 7.10am, to which Rydon assured that action would be taken to ensure that no work would start before 7.30am. Furthermore, residents raised queries in regard to the site's operating hours on a Saturday, which are from 7.30am – 6pm, as it was suggested that these are outside of normal permitted hours for construction sites such as this. Addressing this concern after the meeting, a spokesman from South Gloucestershire Council said: “The working hours restrictions for the IAAPS development are a continuation of the original planning restrictions set for the Bristol & Bath Science Park dating back to before 2013. This includes Saturday working between 7am to 6pm.If anyone has specific concerns relating to the development such as noise, then they can be raised with our Environmental Health team to investigate.” The next IAAPS community meeting will be held at the Science Park on Tuesday November 12 at 7pm. n NEWS RESIDENTS of Lyde Green are being urged to get involved with their local neighbourhood watch scheme, which needs new volunteers to keep it going. Lyde Green Neighbourhood Watch was formed in 2017 to tackle crime in the area by encouraging residents to communicate with each other, as well as the police. Every resident is automatically a member of the watch, which involves individuals simply looking out for their neighbours and the community, and reporting any issues or suspicious activity. But it needs people to step up and fill three key roles if it is to continue. In Lyde Green the watch is split into 14 zones, which can be adjusted over time as the area develops. Each zone is managed by a dedicated zone coordinator, who acts as a focal point for issues and concerns arising within their zone. On Thursday September 26 at 7pm, the neighbourhood watch

will hold a drop-in session at Lyde Green Community Centre for residents to pop by for a chat and find out more about the scheme, followed by the watch’s annual general meeting at 7.30pm. As part of the meeting, an update on crime and policing within the area will be given

from the local police beat team and the Lyde Green road safety team have also been invited to give an update. Elections will also take place for key roles for the LGNHW committee. These include the roles of chair, secretary, treasurer, public relations officer, webmaster, newsletter editor, social media administrator, events coordinator and residential zone coordinators. LGNHW founder and committee member Cate Biggs said: “Currently the watch doesn’t have a chairperson, our secretary will be stepping down in September and we only have an interim treasurer. Unless our neighbours step forward to fill these three roles at our upcoming AGM, we can’t form a committee and it is likely the

activities of the LGNHW will need to cease. "It would be such a shame, after nearly three years, to have to close the watch. We’ve made great links with the local police, road safety team and others, and have already seen improvements in safety and security from the community working together. Several other roles are also vacant, so we would really encourage local residents to come along, get involved and support their community.” Any resident of Lyde Green is able to stand for a role within LGNHW’s committee. To express your interest or to find out more about the scheme, email info@ lydegreennhw.com or search for Lyde Green Neighbourhood Watch on Facebook.

DO you know anyone who has lost a mountain bike? A 'Tornado' cycle has been found propped up against a fence off Emersons Way. A resident discovered the cycle near his home on Monday August 5 and is hoping to reunite it with its rightful owner. He said: “We tried the police and the local council but they can't help so we're at a bit of a loss. If it's someone's precious bicycle I don't want to chuck it in the tip but I can't find any way of finding out who it belongs to. “It looks a like a nice bicycle and has lots of gears. It's twothirds size; it would be too small for me but too big for a small child.” To claim the bike please call 07836 746287, giving a full description.

Poignant reason for Himalayas trek A DENTAL practice manager is heading to the Himalayas on a fundraising expedition. Kirsty White, who works at Bupa Dental Care Downend, is trekking to Everest Base Camp to raise money and awareness for Kidney Cancer UK. Kirsty, her partner Richard and brother Chris, will head off on the 12-day journey in October and are preparing for the physical demand of the mountain range's extreme weather and 17,600ft altitude of the camp. Richard’s father, Frank, was set to join the trio on their expedition before he was diagnosed with kidney cancer in November last year. The 55-year-old died six weeks after discovering the illness. Kidney cancer, also known as renal cancer, is one of the most common types of cancer in the UK and can be beaten if caught early but once it has spread beyond the kidney, there is no cure. There are no obvious symptoms of kidney cancer and they are usually ignored, although they include blood in urine or persistent pain in the lower back or side. Kirsty is aiming to raise £1,000 for charity Kidney Cancer UK, which raises awareness and helps support people living with the disease, through sponsorship of her trek and

raffles that will take place at the her practice in Badminton Road. She and her team have covered the costs of their trip and equipment, so every penny donated will go directly to Kidney Cancer UK. Each year, Kirsty completes a challenge for a charity close to her heart and Everest is set to be the toughest yet. She said: “Our trek up Everest is going to be physically and emotionally challenging for us all. "We lost someone we love too soon to

Excellent year for Winterbourne Academy WINTERBOURNE Academy students have notched up some impressive A-level results. Headteacher Jason Beardmore said: “The staff and governors at Winterbourne Academy are thrilled to share our provisional A-level results in this, the first year of the brand new specifications. The added level of rigour and difficulty of the new specifications has not daunted Winterbourne students, for whom the average point score remains strong and in line with last year. “We are extremely pleased to announce an improvement in the overall pass rate from 2018, with the 2019 pass rate now sitting at 98 per cent for A-level. “Since 2018 results, we have seen rises in achievement in multiple pass rate measures including A*-B, A*-C and A*-E. Additionally, this year’s pass rate

is sitting higher than the national for 2018, which was in itself based on the old (and arguably easier) specifications. “Many of our students achieved very highly this year, with a number scoring top grades in academic and vocational courses, and overall Winterbourne Academy students met or exceeded national expectations for value-added.” The following students all achieved 3 or more A/A*s in their clutch of results: Shona Buckley 3A Eleanor Child 3A Georgie Locke 3A Thomas Rosenberg 4A* Dilan Ruparell 3A*, 1A, 1B Katie Stevens 3A, 1B Holly Weaving 3A, 1A* Emily Ashworth 1A*, 2As Cabinet Member for

A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY

A wonderful opportunity

S

Julian and Jenifer Capper Silverhill School and Day Nursery

ILVERHILL School offers an education to children from 0 – 11. The aim of the school is to foster a love of learning and provide an opportunity for children to grow into wellrounded and empathetic young people who have an understanding of the world they live in and confidence and self-reliance. Our beautiful grounds provide a wonderful opportunity for the children to take their learning into the outdoor world and discover how their education has relevance to the world they live in. The basis of their core education is guided by the National Curriculum, but we choose to use this in conjunction with a cross-curricular approach, based on a termly theme. This gives the children the opportunity to develop their thinking and problem-solving skills and for their emotional maturity to grow as they consider in greater depth what each subject is offering.

The inclusion of French, Spanish, Latin, Forest School, Sport, Music, Debate, Dance and Drama gives the children an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the emotional world as well as providing opportunities for them to work together and develop their social and leadership skills. Their awareness of and gratitude towards the community in which they live is enhanced by visits to local homes for the elderly and running projects in school to support the elderly. Beyond this and with the full support of their parents the children are also actively supportive of an orphanage in India called Haven Home, with fund-raising and by sending out school items, such as Silverhill uniforms and classroom items. We look forward to welcoming you to our Open Morning. Julian and Jenifer Capper

target grades. Head of Sixth Form, Kate Long said ‘we are delighted that everyone’s hard work and dedication has paid off, with our young people progressing on to the university and apprenticeship courses of their choice.’

Bridie’s ready for life in the fast lane BRIDIE Bates joined IKB Academy when it opened four years ago as the only girl in Year 10. Moving to the new school in Keynsham, which specialises in science, technology, engineering and maths, was a bold step, but Bridie had the resolve and foresight to recognise IKB as the place she needed to be to follow her lifetime dream of a career in the motor sport industry. Bridie’s passion for motor sport began when she was very young and watched Formula 1 at home with her Dad. Her success at GCSE and in the sixth form at IKB has earned her a place at Derby University to study Motor Sport engineering. Bridie, who lives in Mangotsfield, has also benefited from IKB’s unique work placement programme that saw her gain invaluable experience with Jaguar Land Rover. Principal Danny Wilkinson said: “We will miss Bridie at IKB but enthusiastically look forward to following what will be a hugely successful career in her dream

industry.” Bridie is one of many success stories for the specialist academy, which now has many girls as well as boys among its students. Other students are also beginning degree apprenticeships, for example with Rolls Royce and Dyson, while many who have chosen university are set to begin their studies in subject areas including aerospace engineering and biochemistry. Post-16 results in STEM subjects are excellent for a third year running.A quarter of all A-level results were at grade B and above and 63 per cent of all Level 3 Engineering grades were at Distinction and Distinction*, enabling students to secure fantastic places at university and on degree apprenticeships. Mr Wilkinson said: “For us at IKB the results are of course important, but what’s more important are the opportunities and destinations that are made possible because of these results, “As a small sixth form we really get to know our students.”

Principal Michael Jaffrain said: “We have had an excellent set of results at A-level, which was particularly impressive in view of the new tougher linear curriculum and the personal barriers some of our students have had to overcome this academic year. "Our Applied General results have also been outstanding. I wish all of our students who will be leaving us the very best for the future.” St Brendan’s students have secured places on some of the country’s most competitive university courses, including four to Oxbridge. Prison inspectors find good and bad INSPECTORS say that Ashfield prison in Pucklechurch is safe – but has "serious" weaknesses in its work rehabilitating and resettling prisoners. The category C jail in Shortwood Road has 400 inmates, all men convicted of sexual offences and aged between 21 and 88. Only 3.3% of prisoners there are serving sentences of less than four years, with more than half serving either more than 10 years, life or indeterminate sentences for public protection. HM Inspectorate of Prisons

visited the site in March and April this year and its report, which has just been released, assessed Ashfield as ‘good’ – the highest grade – for safety, respectful detention and purposeful activity. But with around 85% of its inmates presenting a "high or very high risk of harm to the public", inspectors raised concerns that rehabilitation and work to prepare inmates for release was not good enough – and that a lack of open prison places meant inmates were being released straight into the

community from Ashfield. Jail operator Serco and the Prison Service say they are working to improve this. HM Chief Inspector of Prisons Peter Clarke said Ashfield was very safe, with only one fight and seven assaults recorded in six months before the inspection. Use of force by staff was also low. Inspectors found strong relationships between staff and prisoners, with 86% of prisoners saying staff treated them with respect. Buildings were in good condition, with no overcrowding, exceptionally good amounts of time out of cells and areas devoted to gardening and raising animals. The inspectors also noticed significant improvements in purposeful activity, including training and education, since their last visit in 2015. Ofsted and Care Quality Commission inspectors also visited the prison and found education, skills, work and health provision to be good. But Mr Clarke said the positives were “to some extent balanced by some disappointing findings in rehabilitation and resettlement planning". He added: "The weaknesses we found were serious, and were exacerbated by the specialist requirements of the prisoner population at Ashfield.” The level and quality of contact between prisoners and supervisors planning their rehabilitation and release had declined and almost half did not have an up-to-date assessment of the risk they posed to society. A lack of category D places in

Email: sales@emersonsgreenvoice.co.uk

open prisons meant that Ashfield was having to release around eight prisoners per month into the community, even though it had no formal resettlement role. "Given the high-risk nature of the vast majority of the prisoners at Ashfield, this was an issue of great concern,” said Mr Clarke, although he said the prison was aware of what needed to be done to address its weaknesses. Director General of Prisons Phil Copple said: “I am pleased that the inspectors have found, again, that HMP Ashfield is an overwhelmingly safe and decent prison. The director and the whole Serco team deserve credit for this. Since the inspection, staff have received new training, and the prison has brought in five in-house probation officers to assess offenders and manage their release. I am confident the director and his team will make the necessary improvements to address inspectors’ concerns around resettlement.” Prison director Martin Booth said: “We welcome this very positive report from the Chief Inspector of Prisons, rating HMP Ashfield as ‘good’, the highest standard, in three of the four tests of a healthy prison. “We also recognise that the report highlights some areas for improvement. We are addressing those that are our responsibility and I am pleased to say that we have already agreed plans to improve the training and supervision of staff working with men convicted of sex offences. We are also reviewing with the MoJ the range of commissioned interventions.”

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Pioneering apprentice PCs

W

ITH the school holidays over, I’ve been reflecting on the exceptionally busy summer we’ve experienced. From the Extinction Rebellion protests that caused traffic mayhem in and around Bristol to wonderful events including Glastonbury, Pride and the Harbourside Festival, the police have worked really hard the last few months to keep our communities safe. I know officers will always go above and beyond to support such events and I want to say thank you to all those individuals and teams who have been involved for your hard work. I’m sure you would have also heard about our new Prime Minister’s promise to recruit 20,000 more police officers to make our streets safer. This is a commitment that I very much welcome. We’ve had to deal

with years of funding cuts and had to make £78 million worth of savings, all while protecting officer numbers wherever possible and dealing with increasingly more complex and serious crime. If the Prime Minister keeps his promise, it will ease the pressure on officers and teams in our area as well as improving outcomes for victims. Local people often say to me that they want to see more officers in their villages, towns and cities and an increase in numbers would reassure our communities and keep our streets feeling safe. Avon and Somerset Police is in a great position in terms of learning and development opportunities for new recruits, especially with the launch of the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA). Accredited by the College of

Policing and launched this year, the PCDA is being rolled our across the country. Avon and Somerset Police is the first force in the South West to move its initial police learning to the PCDA, partnering with UWE to offer a rewarding learning experience to our new recruits as well as a starting salary of £20k. Apprentice officers will spend around three quarters of their time learning on the job and the rest studying or in the classroom, becoming familiar with the skills they need to do the job. This is a great opportunity for individuals to pursue a varied and interesting role as part of the force, while gaining a qualification at the same time. Local people deserve the best officers on our streets to keep us safe and the new apprenticeship prepares, trains and supports officers to deal with the complex

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens crimes they will face as part of their role. I also hope that the new training and the opportunity to gain a higher education qualification will encourage a wide range of people who might not have considered a career in policing to apply and make a difference to our communities.

It’s such an honour to become Minister responsible for NHS

Emersons Green Voice

S the summer holidays draw to an end, I wanted to begin this month’s column by saying how delighted I was to see the recent announcement from South Gloucestershire Council that £30,000 of repairs will soon be made to the play area at Springfield Park, after it was so sadly damaged by vandalism in April. I am so pleased to hear that the play equipment and safety surfacing, which was badly damaged in a fire back in the spring, will be repaired and revamped as part of a £200,000 investment in play equipment

and facilities across the whole of South Gloucestershire. As a local man and the father of two young children myself, I passionately believe in the vital need for community facilities such as the play area at Springfield Park for young families to enjoy all the year round, but especially in these summer months.

Last month, I was appointed Health Minister by the new Prime Minister Boris Johnson- which is a real honour given my mum worked in the NHS and I sat on the Health Select Committee for three years. As part of our long term plan for the NHS we will be putting an extra £34billion into the NHS by 2023- a real terms rise of 3.4% every single year, over five years. I want to ensure that, both locally and nationally, I work as hard as possible for our NHS, investing not only in new hospitals but also in frontline staff, so that we have a world class health service that can meet every patient’s need.

Since I’ve been the local MP over the past 10 years, I know that the NHS is one of the most important issues for local people. Since the last Labour government closed Frenchay and threatened Cossham, we’ve seen Cossham receive a £21m upgrade, and new GP buildings such as at Beaufort

‘Interest is high’ in sports centre

Parks celebrates 10th birthday

THE manager of the new David Lloyd centre being built at Lyde Green has defended the prices, which many local people feel are high. Full membership of the club will cost £129 a month and the most basic package is £66. Children aged three to 18 will be charged £32 a month. General manager Jack Phillips told the Voice that initial interest in the upmarket £11m facility, which is due to open later this year and will include indoor and outdoor pools and covered and outdoor tennis courts as well a gym and spa, had been strong. “We are very excited to be part of this new community,” he said. “This is one of our biggest and most exciting projects to date and since the sales suite opened the team have been overwhelmed both by the enthusiasm and warmth of the local residents, and the interest we have received. Indeed the number of potential and new members who have visited us

to find out more about what the club has to offer, has surpassed our expectations.” Mr Phillips said the pricing structure was in line with other David Lloyd clubs offering premium facilities. “We genuinely believe that when people see the club they will be surprised by all that it will have to offer, and will recognise its value for money compared to other local facilities,” he said. Residents have been airing their views about the prices on social media groups and have also been critical of the £100 joining fee (£10 for children) and the sales tactics being used. One woman told the Voice she felt there had been a lack of empathy when she had declined to sign up on the spot after taking a tour. Mr Phillips said: “I was very surprised and concerned to hear that anyone felt they had received anything other than a warm welcome when they visited our sales suite, and can only apologise. I will look into this at once.”

Fun brooch With Liz Freke of Hattie’s Hooray’s Now that the Summer holidays are over and the normal routine is resumed, it’s good to have some fun crafts to do now that those nights are starting too draw in! This fun no-sew brooch is so easy and you can let yours – and the family’s – imaginations run wild! You will need: Oddments of felt, fabric and embellishments Fabric scissors Chalk Pen/pencil Safety pin (one per brooch) Plain paper or card Fabric glue 5p piece PVA glue

25

Family history show

3. Finally finish off with embellishments such as buttons or beads and use fabric glue to attach them or sew them on using needed and thread.

4. TOP TIP!! If attaching separate bits of fabric, for example we used a piece of sequin fabric for the wings – apply a very thin layer of PVA glue around the edges to stop them from fraying. This technique can also be used to stop the ends of ribbon and string fraying.

FAMILY history enthusiasts and those thinking about starting research are invited to a fair later this month to find out more about the subject. Hosted by Bristol and Avon Family History Society, the Family History Fair will take place on Saturday September 28 and will be an opportunity for anyone who needs help or advice on family history matters to have faceto-face sessions with local experts. Representatives from Bath and Bristol Archives will be on hand to give information and advice. Local history societies and museums will also available so visitors can gather more information on the work and living conditions that their ancestors may have experienced. New and secondhand books, postcards,

Showhomes wanted 5 and 10-year guarantees Finance options available

“No job too big or small” 1. Start by deciding what your brooch is going to be – you might want to sketch it first on a piece of paper, cut this out then draw around it onto your felt. We have chosen a bee design. Cut out the main part of your shape using felt your chosen colour. Take your 5p and, using the same colour felt, draw around your 5p with chalk or a pen onto the felt and cut out.

2. Now decide how you are going to build the design of your shape. We have used yellow felt to create the ‘stripes’ of the bee and sequin fabric to create the wing.

5. Once your design is dry, spread a layer of glue onto the reverse of the felt circle you created earlier. Now open the safety pin and lie your circle over the closed side of the safety pin and attach the glued felt circle to the reverse of the brooch. This will secure the safety pin to the back of your brooch. Leave to dry.

6. You are now ready to wear your brooch! Why not create other designs and try using different layers to create 3D shapes for your brooch. Most of all have fun with your designs! See you for a spooky make in October!

Fireworks charity

EVERY year Downend Round Table partner with a charity for the annual Fireworks display. This year we are pleased to announce we will be working with Network Counselling and Training. Based in Elm Park, Filton, Network Counselling offers affordable counselling in a welcoming, safe and confidential space where people can be listened to, accepted and understood. Counselling can be a lifeline, as a client said, “The sessions really helped me through the worst months of my life. I can’t thank my counsellor enough.” Network has been offering affordable counselling to all regardless of background or ability to pay for over 30 years. As a charity it relies upon the generous support of Trusts, individuals and community events like the Downend Round Table Fireworks to continue to provide our services. Network will join us at Fireworks to talk about the work they do, and will receive a donation

from the money raised. For more information on Network, see their website: www.network.org.uk. The charities were chosen from a long list of suggestions made by the public, and we’re very grateful for everyone who took the time to get in touch. In particular, we’d like to thank Headway Bristol and National Autistic Society South Gloucestershire Branch for meeting us earlier this year to talk about their work. In return, we made donations to each charity of £1000. Don't forget that Downend Round Table makes donations throughout the year, and works with local groups on our events such as Downend Round Table Fireworks and Downend Round Table Santa Sleigh. So if you've got ideas about

how we could support groups important to you, get in touch! This year the display will take place on Friday 1st November, as usual there will be two displays, a huge bonfire, funfair rides, food, drink and entertainment. Tickets will be on sale from September. As well as organising the annual Fireworks display, Downend Round Table is a social organisation for men aged 18-45. If you’d like to make new friends while trying new things, and supporting your community as well, get in touch. You can find us on FaceBook here: www.facebook.com/downendrt.

YOU may have noticed the scaffolding around St James’ Church in Mangotsfield. There is essential maintenance works being carried out to include kitchen and toilet facilities. The social committee need to raise additional funds to enable the project to be completed and are asking for your help. They will be serving afternoon tea at the Church Hall on Richmond Road, Mangotsfield on Saturday October 12 from 2-5pm. More details to follow next month. In the meantime, they need donations of china teapots, cake stands, tea cups and saucers, tea plates, sugar bowls and milk jugs. If you are able to donate, please contact Neil on 07434 978074 to arrange a drop-off time.

n PETER'S VISION

Changing fast

I

GENERALLY think that we humans don't like change, but there are times when change happens whether we like it or not. The global political & economic scene is a great example here, but don’t worry, that’s the last time I mention politics. I would say that in general I’m happy embracing change. If you’ve read this blog before you probably know that I like new things - high tech equipment, the latest lighter, thinner & clearer lenses and particularly new glasses & sunglasses! Often the biggest change this time of year is back to school. We’ve no new schools in our house this year, but certainly new classes & new teachers for our three to

look forward to meeting! It’s a good time of year to remind all you parents & grandparents that eye checks for young eyes are highly recommended, at least once a year. It always surprises me to read that only around 25% of us take our children for eye checks (yes, I have seen all the young eyes in our house this month!) but 75% of us take our children for dental checks. In general most children can see well and normally. We do still see those who have just assumed that their blurry eyes are normal and that no one else sees any better. Until your children have an eye check it’s hard to be sure they’re seeing clearly. Of note are children who

report words moving, jumbling or going blurry - these need careful assessment as glasses aren’t always the answer. Sometimes coloured tints or eye exercises are needed. Come and see us for a thorough assessment and advice if you or your child have any concerns, even if you’ve already had a sight test. One change I do enjoy is my transitions - glasses that darken in the sun. Being out and about more with my family they are definitely an easy option. Taking just one pair of glasses leaves a little more room in my rucksack for snacks too! I know glasses that change in the sun aren’t for all of you, but if you’d like to try them we offer you a love them or leave them exchange guarantee.

You & your family, however young, are most welcome to come and see us for your eye care and glasses - whether you like your lenses to change with the sun or not! To arrange an extended eye exam or frame style consultation for yourself or those you love, please call 0117 962 2474 or 0117 965 4434. Appointments can also be booked via our website, or just pop in to our practices in Henleaze or Fishponds and say Hi!

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Staff at Sainsbury's in Emersons Green have raised almost £6,000 for the store's charity of the year, Alzheimer's Research UK. Fundraising activities and donations raised a total of £5,931.08 for the charity, which supports scientific research into the causes, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cures for dementia.

COMPANY director Charles Dowson is cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats. Charles is a director at both DIY Doctor, a home improvement website that operates from Frome, and its building arm, Foundations Up Construction, which provides building services across Somerset, Bath and Bristol. The idea came when DIY Doctor master joiner Gervase Evans announced he was going to build a bamboo bike for the 950-mile trip. Charles offered to join him - on a normal bike. Sadly, Gervase was diagnosed with bowel cancer so has had to drop out to receive treatment. Charles decided to continue and is riding in aid of the charity Crisis UK, which works with homeless people. His companies focus on helping people making their homes more comfortable, and he feels it is important to stop and consider people who don’t have a home at all. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

I also hope that the new training and the opportunity to gain a higher education qualification will encourage a wide range of people who might not have considered a career in policing to apply and make a difference to our communities.

n MANGOTSFIELD RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Our 24 hours fuelled by pedal power PEOPLE are being encouraged to head for the Red Lion in Mangotsfield this weekend to take part in a 24-hour charity stationary cycle ride. Members of Mangotsfield Residents Association have set up two bikes at the pub and are inviting people to take up a 15minute slot. It is hoped the bikes will clock up a distance of 354 miles – the distance between Bristol and Paris. Any money collected will be donated to Macmillan and St Peter's Hospice. The bikes, which are being donated by Cleve Chiropractic, will be available from noon on Saturday August 24 until noon on Sunday August 25. The event is being supported by Red Lion landlady and landlord Mary West and Dan Clewett, who will open the pub for 24 hours while the event takes place. Association member Sarah

Proud said: “We are looking to cycle about 354 miles between the two bikes in the 24-hour period. This will be recorded on the actual spin bikes themselves but also after each person finishes their allotted time it will

also be written down and then added up. “The pub will also be open for 24 hours and there will be other things going on too like a charity auction and raffle, pool and darts competitions and also

Xboxes available so everyone can get involved. Children are also allowed to take part as long as they can reach the pedals!” Although only formed in recent years, Mangotsfield Residents Association has already raised thousands of pounds for good causes. This year they organised a barbecue and disco which raised £1,100, a Mangotsfield's Got Talent night which drew in £200 and a skittles evening which collected £500. Future plans include a charity football match on October 6 which will see Bristol City fans take on Bristol Rovers supporters. This is the second time this will take place after last year's event was hailed a massive success, raising £2,654 for St Peter's Hospice. If anyone would like to take part in the charity bike ride, they can ask for the time sheet behind the bar at the Red Lion. There will be a bucket for donations.

n AROUND THE WIs BEECHMERE BELLES: EMERSONS & LYDE WI WHERE has the summer gone? We have had a truly mixed bag of weather this year. For most of us our biggest concern is will the rain stay off long enough to get the washing dry or will it be so hot the hanging baskets will need watering twice a day but for a growing number of people their question daily is will I eat today, will my bedding get soaked by the rain, will I get dehydrated in this heat? In our July meeting the Beechmere Belles had a truly inspirational talk from one of the founders from Feed the Homeless Bristol. This registered charity does amazing work for the homeless people of our city, along with overwhelming support from the wonderful citizens of Bristol. Feed the Homeless receives no funding whatsoever, everything they do is done by their selfless volunteers and donations from the public. This charity treats the people they help as a struggling family member. The food that is distributed has been freshly made from scratch by products that are in date and not by food that somebody else didn’t think fit for “normal” people. The clothes and blankets etc that are donated to them to give to whoever might need it, are clean, folded nicely and presented in a lovely way, the intention being that just because you have fallen on hard times doesn’t make you less worth the thought and kindness. Twice a year they also hold a day where the homeless can come enjoy a BBQ, have a haircut, talk to people and just for short time feel part of something. I, amongst others at our meeting, was so inspired by the work that is being done. We decided for this evening we wouldn’t have our normal raffle but instead we asked our members to donate food that could be used to cook tasty meals. We had asked what type of items they would like. Our table was groaning under the donations that came in, beans, pasta, tinned tomatoes, chocolate bars etc. It’s odd isn’t it, that you don’t think to donate sweet items, because we can have that type of thing whenever we want, quick boost of energy, bit of a mood lift, let’s be fair that’s why chocolate was invented, but for the homeless it makes a huge difference to their day. We all agreed that this is a fantastic charity and one that the Beechmere Belles will be

supporting for a long time. At our next meeting, we are having a visit from the broadcaster Emma Briton. I’m sure she will have some brilliant stories to tell and hopefully a few behind the scene secrets as well. We are members of the WI and upstanding members of society so any little things that’s she may let slip will be safe with us, unless of course you offer a particularly tasty cake, then sit down and we’ll tell all. We have found our themed raffles at the meetings fun and sometimes thought provoking, from “something in a bottle” to “We’re all going on a summer holiday”, unfortunately two first class tickets to the Seychelles were not donated but we still had some very clever ideas. Our next theme is “Things you can’t live without” so many things, I don’t know where to start. September will see us having a craft evening lead by Fabric Plus in Downend, October is our AGM, making November’s meeting the last of the year. If anybody has any idea exactly where this year has gone, I would be very grateful to know. At our recent committee meeting we actually talked about booking a table for our festive feast, most of us were wearing flip flops at the time and it felt so wrong. If anybody would like to pop in and spend a very pleasant evening with The Beechmere Belles, we meet every fourth Thursday of the month at Emersons Green village hall. Our doors open at 7.30 for a 7.45pm start. If, like me, you aren’t good with names we wear name badges and the board tells you who the committee members are. It would be lovely to see you. Beechmere Belles

DOWNEND WI AT our July meeting we were joined by Alan Freke from Frenchay Museum who gave us an extremely interesting talk about “Frenchay Hospital's Hidden History”. This went back in time to the origins of the original “big house” being built, the owners and how the site developed to the hospital and now a housing development with lots of lovely photos. August is holiday season, so this month we will be holding our annual quiz. We supply the drinks and our members kindly sort out the food. This is an opportunity to have some fun, let your competitive side appear and learn some facts you didn’t know before! September we will be dancing

the night away, by learning a few salsa moves which will be suitable for all ages and abilities. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday August 27 at 7.30pm in Christ Church Hall, North Road, Downend. If you want to come along and see what we are about, please feel free to join us where you can have tea, coffee and cake together with the chance to win a lovely prize in our raffle. If you would like more information feel free to contact me by email at downendwi@ yahoo.co.uk Julie, Secretary

MANGOTSFIELD WI AS I am sat here typing this, I can hardly believe that we are preparing for our September meeting. We are approaching the last few meetings of 2019, Mary has put together a fantastic programme of events this year. August was a thoroughly excellent social evening, thank you to all the ladies who attended, come rain or shine it's always a successful night. What does September bring? Well, Andy Stowe from East Bristol Auction Rooms is who it brings. Andy will be giving us a talk and then there will be some audience participation. When I say participation, I mean we may discuss antiques, not the membership. If you would like to come along to one of our monthly meetings, you do not need to know anyone. We will welcome you and assign a WI member to guide you through the evening. You will be able to enjoy cake and a cuppa and start making new friends. I guarantee that you will be offered the best cake ever, you may learn a new skill too. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors for the first two visits. We have a broad range of ways to contact us, mangotsfieldwi@ gmail.com to email the team directly. SHORTWOOD VILLAGE WI HELLO again! For our August meeting we had a visit from Heather and her dutiful and beautiful guide dog Vincey. She told us about how she first needed a guide dog after suddenly losing her sight at a young age. Since then, with the aid of her trusty guide dogs, she has fulfilled a successful career in a senior role as a physiotherapist for the NHS. We then heard about the Guide Dogs Association and the pathway involved in training a guide dog. The training was likened to starting at “infant school” with a puppy walker through school process all the way to “university” when they graduate fully trained with a degree and are placed with an owner. Vincey is Heather’s seventh dog and we heard about many funny situations that have occurred over the years. While stood at the bus stop one day someone said to her “Do you realise that your dog has a kipper in his mouth?”. To this day she has no idea where this came from. The obligatory tea and cake followed and usual business was discussed. This included a follow up about our successful group performance in July and ideas about our next group event on December 5. For our September meeting, dare I mention the “C” word, as we are making cards to include Christmas cards. If shops can sell well known tins of chocolates in September then we can talk “Christmas”. If you think you would like join us, we would love to welcome new members and we meet on the second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm, next is September 14, in Shortwood Chapel, Main Road, Shortwood. For more information contact me on millhousejoinery@ aol.com. subject heading Shortwood Village WI please. Lynne Miller

SOME of the Beechmere Belles took advantage of the lovely weather in July and travelled into the centre of Bristol to enjoy an early evening meal. We are very lucky in Bristol to be able to enjoy the harbourside we have. Any journey into Bristol was a bit of a trial that particular week but thankfully nobody missed the opening curtain for the award-winning musical Calendar Girls, the musical that had been adapted for stage by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth. As a group we decided to honour the original Calendar Girls by wearing all black and sporting sunflowers, and if I say so myself we all looked amazing and drew a little bit of attention as there so many of us. It was a brilliant show with amazing performances from all the actors, and I would highly recommend it to anybody if they get the chance to see it. Sam Cormack, Beechmere Belles

THE Cleeve Singers hit the right note when they performed their annual summer concert at Lincombe Barn in Downend. Entertainment opened with guests Bristol Ukulele Jam who quickly got the audience in the mood. The Cleeve Singers then took to the stage with some light hearted songs and a piano solo. The second half featured musical hits and included two solo performances and three songs from South Pacific. Patricia Holmes, secretary of the Cleeve Singers, said: “The evening was well attended and enjoyed by everyone.”

n VETS’ ADVICE

IT’S never too early to start thinking about fireworks! With only a couple of months to go before Bonfire night and Christmas/New Years Eve, which are the traditional times for extravagant displays, we all start thinking how we can protect our pets from the stresses of fireworks. The loud noises associated with the fireworks can give rise to fear and even phobias. Your pet might shake, pant, salivate, urinate/defecate inappropriately, hide or cling to you or try to Your Vet and escape for example. PracticeIfOwner: your pet is sensitive to loud noises then it is usually Carla Puime Costoya best to engage in long-term MRCVS treatment strategies that will aim to desensitise them to their fear. This can take several months to reach positive effect, so we recommend contacting us ASAP Pets attoHome, speak to one of our team. Come and talk reen, Bristol, BS16 7AEto the team at Emerson’s Green Vets4Pets about how we might be able to help com/bristol-emersons-green you plan for the during firework season. 5pm Sat, 10.30am - 4.30pm Sun

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

Kindness and patience go a long way in treating patients Blog 66 – New staff chiropractors and sports therapists GREAT to see climate change return to normal in the UK as we see record rainfalls in August… This is what we are used to! I’m sure in the future we will be setting up pipelines to our friends in the south of Europe selling water to them at extortionate prices. Anywho, in preparation for the new clinic I have hired a couple of new faces with more to come. This month I can introduce you to our new chiropractor Emily and our new sports therapist Luke. Due to spending nearly 17 years working in elite level sport I have made many connections and luckily many friends who are now able to help me to create the greatest multi-disciplinary clinic in Bristol …possibly the world ;). Indeed, I met Emily whilst I was working in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic games. I was down at the track at Bath university working with the successful GB Paralympic team when this young female sprinter asked if I could check out the cause of her hamstring injuries. We did an examination and it was quickly evident that Emily had back problems that were leading to her hamstring issues. The traditional hamstring treatments that she had been doing weren’t getting to the root of the problem. A short treatment later and she was much better. I looked after her over the next couple of years and Emily developed an interest in what we did and how quickly it could help athletes. I explained that these treatments are also great for non-athletes and so she came to observe at Cleve Chiropractic in Mangotsfield to see for herself. Emily saw the benefit that ethical Chiropractic could have in just a short number of treatments for each patient (average for a non-athlete with low back pain is six to eight treatments.) Five years later Emily has completed her Masters in Chiropractic and just

graduated this summer looking for work. In life timing is everything and to have such an amazing, kind and intelligent chiropractor, that I already know as a lovely person, graduate just as I expand into the new clinic is perfect! Emily has already completed a couple of years of practice on real patients as part of her Masters degree so she graduates with experience. But what you can’t buy in a new chiropractic associate is natural kindness, patience and a willingness to want to care for real people. That is what Emily has in abundance. Beyond that, to work with me you have to treat me and trust me when I say that, that is a difficult test to pass. I only accept the best quality here. Speaking of quality, over the years alongside our famous physio team we have been building our sports therapy team. Those who have a been patients long enough will know how fantastic Amy and Fayme are. They are proven super heroes at getting to the bottom of people's soft tissue issues and helping with recovery from sports injuries. However for years I have worked alongside Luke at Bristol Rovers. Alongside Amy and Fayme (obviously) Luke is one of the greatest sports therapists that I have ever worked with in sport. Luke has a talent with his hands for soft tissue that developed more and more as he sadly lost his eyesight. Luke is heavily partially sighted and all credit to him, you wouldn’t know if you met him. He is happy for me to talk about his sight and as I see it, it is a big reason for his super power. Luke's hand control and feel during massage is incredible. The loss of one sense has developed another and Luke is in the perfect job to take advantage. I have to make a couple of adaptations at the clinic to help him but every single adaptation is worth it, to enable Luke to work with patients at Cleve Chiropractic. If there are any other

employers out there considering working with the visually impaired I implore you to give it chance. The benefits are never ending. Since Luke has lost his sight Luke has run the London Marathon unaided, rowed for the GB Paralympic team, sailed internationally and run the vital ‘return to play’ department of Bristol Rovers Football Club. After working in the multi discipline team at Rovers, Luke sees his future as a chiropractor. He cannot start studying until 2020 so we have him with us for at least a year and after that we hope to welcome him back as a chiropractor! Emily and Luke are taking bookings now, so call or book online to come and meet them. So after all the introductions I can update you that the new clinic is a couple of weeks behind but is still getting there. I hope for it to be ready to open mid to late September. I keep buying
