Dramatic rise in burglaries POLICE are warning residents to be careful about home security after a big increase in house break-ins. Officers told a public meeting in Mangotsfield on November 20 that across South Gloucestershire they had been called to 79 domestic burglaries in the past four weeks, when they would usually expect about 45. Neighbourhood Sergeant Steve Davey said there had been a dramatic rise in home raids in Staple Hill and Rodway from the usual one or two a week. Police say the main types of break-ins in Emersons Green and Downend are car key burglaries, where thieves come in to take keys so they can steal motors, and paddle / stub handle burglaries, where doors have not been locked with the key. They warn: Always lock doors and windows when you go out and before you go to bed at night.Simply lifting the handle until it clicks is not enough to keep thieves out . Once locked, remove the keys and put them somewhere easy to reach (but out of plain sight).
‘I don’t think this park is safe’ Lyde Green mum Lea Korologou Linden has raised concerns over the standard of the play park provided by developers.

£10,000 raised - the hard way SALUTE Frankie Johns - the Million Pennies man! Frankie, aka John Billitteri, has smashed his ambitious target for the charity Help for Heroes. He has spent three years pedalling around Bristol collecting people's spare change. He also visits schools and puts collection buckets in local pubs and clubs, including those where he performs. He's singing a happy song this Christmas after surpassing his target by reaching the grand total of 1,018,784 pennies - or
£10,187.84. Frankie, who was nominated for a Pride of Britain award for his pennies campaign, said: “It’s absolutely brilliant! “It’s been a challenge but a good one. I’ve loved getting out and meeting people and have met lots of new friends. The support people have given me has been fantastic so I’d like to say a huge thank you to them. He has already raised more than £70,000 over the years for Help for Heroes, the charity which supports British service men and women who have been wounded or injured in the line of duty.

Let there be (more) lights!
Halfway there: viaduct works continue
RESIDENTS of Lyde Green are being invited to decorate their homes as part of a festive lights trail across the estate. Following the success of the Halloween trail in October, in which 102 houses (over 10% of homes in the development) signed up to take part and many more decided to join in on the night, it was suggested on the Lyde Green Local Facebook group that a Christmas lights trail would also provide a great opportunity to bring the local community together and help people to meet their neighbours. Speaking of the plans for the Christmas trail, which will run from December 1- 31, Lyde Green resident Natalie Harrison said: “A couple of weeks ago another resident suggested we have a trail map showing where all the lit up houses would be during December so we could walk
REPAIRS to the Bromley Heath Viaduct are continuing, with the work now more than midway through its 33-week accelerated programme. The project has come in for criticism in recent weeks after a trial change to the restrictions at the Hambrook lights. Drivers from Winterbourne have been prevented from turning left. The council wants them to go right, round the M32 roundabout and then eastward on the ring road but many are going straight ahead and then through Cleevewood Road, which is causing problems for people living in that area and in Frenchay. The council has said it will review the trial after November 24 and says it will consider all feedback from motorists. Find out more at the Bromley Heath Viaduct page on Facebook.
around the neighbourhood and look at them. “On that post I told them about what Olveston village does every Christmas, which is the window advent. With this, every day a newly decorated window appears somewhere around the village and then on Christmas Eve all the residents get together on a walk to visit each of the 24 houses and sing a Christmas carol outside. People in the Lyde Green Local group liked the idea and so have asked me to help out and collect names and streets so we can do an advent trail alongside the Christmas lights trail. “There appears to be quite a bit of interest in the trail so far after only a couple of days, so it’s looking promising so far! “The community really came together for Halloween and everybody really enjoyed it as a whole so I think the same will be said for the Christmas trail too.” In addition to the Christmas trail, the Friends of Lyde Green Primary School are also holding a Christmas tree sale on Sunday December 10 from 11am to 4pm, where there will be an opportunity to help decorate the community tree, enjoy carol singing with Bristol Musical Theatre and refreshments too. ‘We’ve been short-changed with this park’ A MUM has raised concerns about the mud and possible danger of the new children’s park in Lyde Green. The park, along with a BMX track, is off Howsmoor Lane and Forgetmenot Way. There’s a smaller play area for toddler age children is on Pennycress Road on the other side of the Lyde Green development. Lea Korologou Linden has lived in Lyde Green for two years, and was excited to take her two-year-old son to the park when it first opened in July after significant delays. However, after visiting the play area on several occasions, she says she is disappointed and worried. Lea, who also has a fivemonth-old daughter, said: “The park doesn’t have rubber flooring like other parks, but instead has a plastic flooring with holes in it so when it rains there’s always lots of mud that comes through. I’m worried that during the winter the park won’t be
Lea Korologou Linden and her daughter at the play park accessible. “There’s also no gate, and I find that worrying as children could just run out - it doesn’t feel completely safe and it doesn’t feel like it’s been properly thought about.
“I have spoken to other mums and friends who live locally with children and they aren’t happy either. Everybody is disappointed with the park and it feels like it is something the developers have made to tick a box. I think
they need to reconsider what’s been put in the park as the materials don’t seem durable and appropriate to me. It’s been really poorly done. “It’s something we’re all paying to have maintained, but I don’t feel like I’ll be able to take my son there as time goes on as it just doesn’t feel safe to me.” A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman told the Voice: “Our community spaces team inspected the play area in July and signed off the landscaping as being acceptable from the developer (Emersons Green Urban Village Ltd). Following this, the management company (GreenSquare) has taken over full responsibility for the site.” A GreenSquare Estates spokesman said: “The park has been built and delivered in line with the Section 106 obligation as approved by South Gloucestershire Council and is therefore complete.

“The level of mud is unfortunate; however as I’m sure the Lyde Green residents will appreciate with the vast amount of wet weather we’ve had lately this is likely to impact upon heavily used areas. It is something we will monitor as we move into the winter months. “I would also add that we conduct weekly safety inspections of the play equipment and surrounding areas and they are not deemed unsafe in any reports to date. We have actually had a good deal of positive feedback regarding the equipment and play area. “The park does not currently have a gate and there are no designs to include one in the future. “Were a gate required it would have been a stipulation within the Section 106.” If any residents have concerns in regards to the parks in Lyde Green, they should contact GreenSquare by calling 01249 465465 or emailing publicopenspace@ greensquaregroup.com

SHOE boxes containing hats and gloves, toys and art materials are awaiting collection from the Rev Kevin Donaghy, of Emersons Green Baptist Church, who helped coordinate this year's appeal. In the past they have gone to countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and eastern European nations and some African countries. Kevin said: "Our annual shoe box appeal always brings out the best in the people of Emersons Green, Lyde Green and the surrounding area. It provides a simple but very effective way for people to show kindness to children overseas who would otherwise receive no gifts at Christmas time." Every year people from the area have been generously filling colourful shoe boxes with gifts that will ensure a smile on a child’s face on Christmas morning. They are then collected by churches, schools and other organisations across the country and taken on often perilous journeys to remote communities overseas. Kevin said: "This year we distributed 200 shoe boxes to local residents to fill with gifts. The response from the community has been incredible. It’s a great way to show love and Christmas spirit to children around the world. "I would like to thank everyone who got involved. We will be back doing it again next year. Keep an eye on our church website for details next autumn.” • Emersons Green Baptist Church meets for services every Sunday at 10.30am in the Village Hall. The church is also running a Christmas Eve service with carols and free mince pies at 4pm.

Prizes go to the top of the plots! GREEN FINGERED tenants are celebrating after receiving awards at Emersons Green Town Council’s annual allotments evening. The town council has 90 allotment tenants, who tend plots in Dibden Lane. Tenants have generally looked after their plots for between one and eight years, and grow a variety of fruit and vegetables including cabbages, runner beans, onions, pumpkins, courgettes, tomatoes, corn, strawberries and apples. As part of the judging process for the awards, plots were evaluated on how weed free they were, the variety of crops grown and how well they were used. This year, the town councillors had a challenging job of deciding the winners for the best kept plots as the standard of the allotments had improved.
Town councillor Simon Budd presents allotment awards to Mr R & Mrs N Lloyd , right, and Mr S Coles, far right As a result, seven tenants were honoured instead of the usual five, each receiving a prize of garden vouchers which were valued between £10 and £30. The event was attended by 38 tenants, councillors and office staff, and in addition to the awards ceremony Jackie Baker from Downend and Bromley Heath in Bloom spoke about the work that is involved in creating attractive displays of flowers. Richard Hull, Clerk’s
Assistant, said: “The evening is an opportunity for the tenants to meet each other, as well as the town councillors and the staff who administer the allotments. “Many of the homes in Emersons Green have small gardens, and for some of those in the area who want to grow their own produce the allotments are an important resource. There is a wide range of ages across the tenants, from some in their twenties through to those who
have been retired for a number of years but who still enjoy the pleasure of cultivating the fruits of their labour.” In order to be eligible for a plot, residents are required to live within the town council’s boundary. There are 20 people on the waiting list for plots, and any residents interested in becoming an allotment tenant can apply by emailing clerk@ emersonsgreen-tc.gov.uk or calling 01454 862180.

Plans to protect pond create a real buzz WILD flowers, bulbs and fruit trees will be planted in the Blackhorse open space as part of the campaign to restore the pond. The aim is to attract wildlife back to the area and create a nature haven. Spearheading the campaign is Liz Foster-Hall, who launched Protect Our Pond a year ago after seeing that water was draining away. Two public meetings have taken place, and South Gloucestershire Council has pledged support. Trees around the pond were cut down during spring to try to improve the situation, but the pond has since dried up. At the public meeting at Blackhorse Primary School in October, the campaign group announced that they were working with conservation group Urban Buzz to find out why the pond was dry. Urban Buzz will also make recommendations for the trees and plants that should stay within the pond area and those that should be taken away or cut back, in order to allow for water to settle. Once this is done, it is hoped that dredging will be the next step in the pond’s maintenance. Speaking about the campaign and the progress it has made, Liz said: “I walk my dog around Blackhorse pond every single day, and over time it just seemed to get sadder and sadder with overgrown plants and the water
draining away so it’s good to see things are happening to improve matters. “In my day job I’m a project manager, and so I decided to work on a structured approach to improve the pond and the area for local residents – it felt like a natural thing for me to explore. We’ve had fantastic support from South Gloucestershire Council’s Environment and Community team who have engaged the Urban Buzz conservationists on our behalf. The Bug Life project they run has given us access to funding for plant areas that will encourage pollinator insects and enhance the area as a whole. “Moving forward, we really want to set up a Friends group to make sure the campaign is a success. For this we’ll need a chair, treasurer and secretary to enable us to access public funding, so it’s really important that we get the support and backing of local residents to make it happen.” The campaign group are now actively looking for residents who would like to help set up a committee for the Friends of Blackhorse so they can start accessing other funding pots to allow for further work to take place. Once the Friends committee has been set up, it is hoped that members will be able to give one hour a month to help with tasks such as litter picking and tidying up bushes in the area.
‘Help us plant an orchard’ A community orchard is to be planted at Blackhorse Open Space on Saturday December 2, from 10am to noon. All welcome! To get involved with the Friends, email e.foster-hall@hotmail. co.uk or send a message via the Protect Our Pond Facebook page.

Warning over village hall parking A RESIDENT who received a fine for parking at Emersons Green Village Hall wants to ensure other motorists do not fall foul of the new rules. Nigel Boadle contacted the Voice after he was fined for using the village hall’s car park on a Saturday. The hall introduced a parking management system in July, following concerns about the facility being used by motorists visiting the local shops and taking away spaces for users of the hall. Nigel said: “I have parked in the village hall car park many times without problems, but unknown to me the management have recently introduced restrictions. These are backed up by a fine of £100, reduced to £60 if paid quickly. I received my penalty for parking for half an hour on a Saturday, when the car park was virtually empty. Parking is still free, but the new rules say you have to register
your car when you park it. As I didn't know about this, I didn't do it, hence the penalty charge. “My concern is that many other people seem to be falling into the same trap.”
In response to Nigel’s concerns, a spokesman for the hall trustees said: “The village hall is a registered charity run by a board of trustees and not a council-run facility as some may think. The adjacent car park has always been for the exclusive use of people using the village hall. The car park is free, but this had become abused by people visiting local shops and other local facilities and even car sharing to town. There is plenty of car parking nearby in the local retail centre but it had got to the stage where legitimate users of the hall were unable to park in the car park. This was affecting our users – especially those with mobility issues and hirers with items that needed to be unloaded in to the hall. “There has always been a sign, at the entrance to the car park, stating that the car park was private and only for patrons of the village hall. We have tried
National Award winners of the Good Garage Scheme
for a long time to manage the car park, but staff were met with verbal abuse and confrontation when challenging people abusing the car park.” The trust brought in the company Parking Eye to run the car park in July. “There are two signs either side of the entrance to the car park and five brand-new A2 size signs in the car park. “Anyone using the hall will need to enter their registration number into the terminal at reception, which takes less than 30 seconds to do. “The hall receives no revenue from these parking charges, and it is not our intention to penalise any genuine users of the hall. We simply wanted to free up the car park so genuine users of the hall have the chance of parking adjacent to the building." Residents who believe they have been fined unfairly may appeal to Parking Eye directly

n ON THE BEAT with PC PAUL FORTUNE
Make sure your festivities aren't ruined by crime IN the past months we’ve seen at least six burglaries in the Downend, Bromley Heath and Mangotsfield area, so please look out for anyone acting suspiciously around neighbours’ homes. Thankfully in three instances the thieves made off emptyhanded after being disturbed by the householder or a neighbour. In one day-time incident a glass door panel was smashed to take keys and steal a car. Another car was stolen with the keys in an overnight burglary. It’s thought the thieves may have reached in through the letterbox to take the keys. In a second night-time breakin a bag, phone and wallet were stolen. Worryingly some people don’t realise that ‘paddle handle’ doors can still be opened from outside unless the key is turned in the lock.
Remember to take the key out of the door and put it out of sight of the letterbox. Visit our website, www.avonandsomerset.police.uk, for more home security advice. If you see someone acting suspiciously, call us straight away. If they’re obviously committing a crime, ring 999. Otherwise, call 101. Christmas is coming and we don’t want anyone’s festivities ruined by crime. We can all take a few steps to protect our property and keep ourselves safe. While shopping: • keep your phone, keys and wallet or purse in an inside pocket and your bag close • park in a busy area, always lock your vehicle and don’t leave anything on view At home:

One wedding and a hill “DEARLY beloved, we are gathered today, in the site of Pomphrey Hill playing fields.” So began one of the more unusual runner briefings that start the weekly, free parkrun at Pomphrey Hill (Saturdays at 9am). Parkruns are friendly occasions and the role of the volunteers is very important (hence the emphatic “I do” in response to the question: “Do you promise to love and to cherish every volunteer each and every time you pass them?”). The most responsible and demanding of these volunteer roles is that of run director. It was therefore fitting that the marriage of two Pomphrey Hill parkrun run directors – to each other – was a cause for celebration on 11th November. Steve and Anne Burge, both also enthusiastic members of Emersons Green Running Club, first met at Pomphrey Hill, had their first kiss at Pomphrey Hill and even
got engaged there. It was inevitable that their wedding day would begin with a parkrun at Pomphrey Hill. As with all weddings, choosing the right outfit was important. Anne, along with many of the female runners donned suits, ties and bow ties, while the men chose brightly coloured tutus and wigs. Steve wore a particularly fetching long wedding dress. The bridal party run began slowly – interrupted first by Anne getting a call from her wedding hairdresser and then Steve repeatedly tripping over his increasingly offwhite train – a situation resolved by tucking the dress into his running shorts. Three laps of the Pomphrey Hill playing fields ended with the bride and groom carrying each other over the finish line. The happy couple did get washed and changed before getting married properly at Priston Mill near Bath later in the day.
The traditional elegance of a wedding was enhanced with race-style medals for the guests and a wedding cake featuring a very special local hill. Many congratulations Anne and Steve! Sian Harris • Pomphrey Hill parkrun takes place every Saturday at 9am and is a free, timed run for all ages and abilities. For more information and to register for your all-important parkrun barcode (which enables your time to be recorded), see www.parkrun.org.uk.
Take up running in winter? You’ve got to be joking ... James Baker explains why guys who decide to respond to this challenge could end up having the last laug AT the turn of this year, a small band of shivering and (slightly) apprehensive men stood silently with arms folded at the entrance to Page Park awaiting the start of their Couch to 5k running journey. “How and why am I standing here in the cold, with the frost biting my cheeks at some ungodly hour when I could be sat indoors by a (post Christmas)
roaring fire?” most of them were probably thinking. The truth is, they had decided to make a change to their lives. A positive change which would make them healthier and happier. These gentleman had answered the call. Whether it was on social media or word of mouth, they had heard that South Gloucestershire Council was offering people the opportunity of free sporting activities via the SportsPound initiative. One of the activities on offer was a male only Couch to 5k eight week running course.

Matthew Mundy and I, from the Downend running group the Stanbridge Fliers, were asked by the council to lead the group. Matthew said: “There are various Couch to 5k groups out there, most of which are mixed gender or female only. The male only group idea is another option. This year we had rugby players, ex footballers, businessmen and students join up, all with their own personal reasons for doing so. They graduated at a local parkrun with flying colours and many now run with running groups in the area and

have completed 10k and half marathons.” The course is free to anyone who is over 14, lives or works in South Glos and is doing 30 mins or less of exercise a week (which doesn’t include walking or commuting by bike). Funding comes from Sport England via the National Lottery. If you would like to participate in a male only Couch to 5k, there will be another starting on January 18 at 7.15pm on Mangotsfield School running track. Access the SportsPound website for your free vouchers.

Such a spooky success LYDE Green residents truly got in the scary spirit this year as a Halloween trail was supported across the area. In total 102 houses (more than 10 per cent of homes in the development) signed up to be part of the event, with many other households also deciding to join in on the night. As part of the trail residents decorated their houses with pumpkins and Halloween themed decorations such as cobwebs in order to let families and trick or treaters know that it was OK for them to knock. One aim was to ensure that any homes not decorated or on the trail map were not bothered unnecessarily during the evening. Comments from locals on the Lyde Green Facebook page praised the event for bringing people together, with many people stating that their children had the best Halloween night, how pleased they were to be part of such a lovely community and thanking residents for their generosity too. The trail was the result of an idea by Hannah Love, and was organised with help from fellow resident Cate Biggs. The day after the trail, 60 pumpkins from across the development were
One of the homes in Lyde Green decorated and welcoming at Halloween also collected for composting. Hannah said: “The trail started off as a little list to save my disabled daughter having to walk too far on Halloween she loves it so staying in wasn't an option! But with the help and support from Cate and the wonderful people here in Lyde Green it became a huge community affair with over 100 homes involved. “We hope to continue the trail next year and make it even bigger and better. Thank you to each and every home that took part - it really was ‘wicked’!”

Finding unique experiences in Finland
THIS time of year always has me dreaming of snowy landscapes and perfect winter escapes. So it seems only too fitting to tell you about our trip to a Northern Finland town called Ruka, some 175 miles South of famous Lapland, where evergreen fir trees tower over the landscape, lakes freeze solid in -20ºC temperatures and husky sledding is a favourite pastime of locals and tourists alike. This Finland trip came about because we’d booked a simple, yet exciting ski package holiday - my first ski adventure in fact! Ruka is less busy than the equivalent resorts in Central Europe, which makes it popular with intermediate
Husky sledding and advanced skiers who prefer quieter slopes and shorter ski lift queues. Although I’m not convinced I found my own ski legs during that trip, I did find unique
Gum shields
experiences and adventures that I’ll never forget. We embarked on tours to take us out into the depths of the Finnish countryside, where we found ourselves snowmobiling our way across frozen lakes with the ice-cold air whipping at our faces and hands. If you’ve not yet had the chance to snowmobile, then I must tell you that it’s much harder than it looks. The slippery ice beneath you and the fast speeds make it difficult to steer, yet the exhilaration causes masses of adrenaline to pump through your body. It’s an amazing experience and one I would definitely recommend to all adventure-lovers out there! During this trip, we could also be found riding reindeer sleighs and driving husky sleds across the snow and ice. I appreciate it can sometimes be a worry to other
animal lovers out there whether we should be doing these kinds of things when travelling. Although some companies are not reputable when it comes to animal welfare, I can certainly recommend EräSusi Huskies. We saw they really did love the animals and we saw dogs that were absolutely raring to go! When driving a husky sled, you have to keep your feet on the brakes every time you slow to a halt, otherwise the dogs jet off like cannons being fired from warships. Like I said, they’re raring to go! In amongst these incredible new experiences, we sled down snowy hills like children and walked for miles and miles around the icy lakes (careful not to venture too far away from the waymarked trails). And when our legs grew weary from walking, skiing, snowmobiling and sledding, we cosied up in our wooden cabin tucked away in the countryside. We lit our own log fires, tiptoed across the underfloor heating, hung out in our private sauna, sipped on delicious Glögi (a type of Finnish mulled wine) and ate Piparkakut (traditional Finnish gingerbread biscuits). Whenever I think back to this incredible winter escape, I feel the Christmas spirit come to life within me. And I hope beyond hope that I’ll be able to jet off in search of another winter wonderland someday soon… maybe Canada or Iceland next time. Who’s with me? Early birds flock to Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm FOR a couple of months now, hundreds of Christmas Trees have been awaiting harvest at Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm. Peter and Simon Maughan, the proprietors of the farm, are encouraging eager customers to reserve their trees instead of cutting too soon. Early birds are visiting in increasing numbers to “Choose and Cut” their own Christmas Tree before the big rush in December. “The benefit of reserving a tree in November means that you don’t have to cut it too early, which results in an inferior tree on the big day,” say Simon. “You can come back a bit closer to Christmas and cut it then. We only cut when the customer is ready, and this is what makes our trees special. It’s how we can guarantee that our trees stay fresh and beautiful until January.”
Here are Simon’s top tips for reserving a Christmas Tree: H Bring lots of things to tie to the tree to make it uniquely yours. Ribbons and cable ties are ideal. H Make a name sign to fix securely to the tree so you can find it again when you come back. H Check that the tree has a straight trunk, so it is easy to stand upright when you get it home. H Measure the space at home before you visit, so you can be sure the tree will fit.
Trees always seem a lot bigger when you get them indoors.
Already this year our trees have been hand-picked for McDonald’s Christmas TV campaign (filmed in various locations in Bristol) and for the concourse at Temple Meads Station. One Norwegian Spruce will appear on BBC’s Victorian Christmas, and two Serbian Spruces on Philip Schofield’s How to Spend It Well At Christmas. Frenchay trees also made a recent appearance at the Winterbourne Musical Theatre’s production of The Christmas Schooner. “I always get asked which are the best trees, which are the longest lasting. It’s really hard to answer, because so much depends on personal taste, and so much on how well it will be looked after in the home. I always send early customers in the direction of the ‘non-drop’ firs, such as the Nordmann and
the Fraser. Later customers will be safe with any tree, but I always recommend the traditional spruces, because these are the trees I really love.” Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm is open until Christmas Eve, 9am-5pm every day. “Choose and Cut” runs just as long as stocks last. Prices start from £20. www.frenchaychristmastreefarm.co.uk

Sportsman Phil called up for Team GB - at 60 EMERSONS Green resident Philip Hobbs is proving age is no barrier to sporting prowess after success at the World Laser Run Championships in South Africa. Laser Run is a multi-event sport which includes swimming, fencing and horse riding and is the final element of the Modern Pentathlon that you see at the Olympics. Phil qualified after taking part in the first ever British Laser Run Championships, which were held at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex (YOSC) in August and showcased many outstanding performances across different age groups, from nine-years-old to 60 plus. He was part of the 29-strong team representing GB that went to Cape Town in October, returning with the Team Silver medal in the Masters 60+ category. Phil, 60, said: "It was a great honour to represent GB for the first time ever, proving that age
is no barrier to taking part." After coaching Pentathlon GB Laser Run at schools and clubs for several years, Phil decided to try the new event himself and says he can thoroughly recommend the experience. He is now encouraging others give the sport a try. "The 2018 World Laser Run
Championships are in Dublin next September, with the GB Championships to select the team planned for next August, so there is plenty of time for all the family to get training," he said. If you are interested in attending a taster event or would like to know more about Modern Pentathlon activities,
including Laser Run, Biathle, Triathle, Triathlon, Tetrathlon or Pentathlon, then contact Phil by emailing prhcoaching@outlook. com Alternatively look at the Pentathlon GB website https:// www.pentathlongb.org/events/ intro which contains details of training events and competitions. Phil can also arrange for training/taster sessions to be carried out at YOSC or other locations such as schools and sports halls using a portable kit. Phil, who is regional chair of Pentathlon GB South West, is keen to speak to any sponsors that may be interested in supporting the creation of YOSC as the South West regional Laser Run training venue. "This will enable more training activities to take place and provide us with the ability to stage local, regional, national and taster competitions," Phil said.

BEECHMERE BELLES WI IT’S been a busy few months for the Beechmere Belles in Emersons Green. Some of our ladies were lucky enough to visit the BBC in Bristol. Taking part in the Archers radio programme and a news programme was the highlight of the visit. Another trip took us to the theatre for mesmerizing puppets of War Horse. In October we celebrated our third birthday and AGM with champagne, nibbles and of course a birthday cake. The new president was elected along with the committee. Why not come along and meet her at our next meeting? Our November meeting is our last of the year so it only seems right that we should end with a Christmas Craft; we will be Iris folding and a making a Gem Craft Wonky tree. We are also looking forward to Emersons Green Village Hall

emersonsgreenvoice to members, including several who have newly joined from our waiting list. On arrival everyone was given a free “mystery” raffle ticket and then enjoyed some time to have a chat over a hot cuppa and a slice of home-made cake. Jane Eaton - our “excellent expedition” expert - was next and she revealed the proposed outing schedule for the next 12 months. This included a visit to Bristol Blue Glass, a beer tasting session in Warmley, a coach trip to see Bletchley Park and a group visit to look with pride upon Bristol’s own Concorde in her new home at Bristol Aerospace Museum, Filton. Our main event for the evening was a talk and demonstration by Bromley Heath’s own fabulous florist Vicky Veasey. Vicky demonstrated how to professionally wrap a small bunch of flowers, a hamper basket and how to make an elaborate presentation envelope for a standard gift voucher. She then crafted a beautiful Christmas floral display using just a wine glass (empty, I’m afraid), green oasis, basic garden foliage and Christmas tree baubles. Vicky also shared
her extensive knowledge of how to make the most of oasis – the green floral kind that is, not Liam and Noel. After much applause we rounded up the evening with our surprise raffle with two lucky winners taking home Vicky’s gorgeous creations. Thank you Vicky. We think it’s going to take a lot of practice before we reach your high standards! At 4pm on Sunday December 3, BHWI community choir will be giving a Christmas concert at Bromley Heath Junior School to raise funds for our chosen charity, The Jessie May Trust. Happily, this event is open to the public with full details available on our website – www.bromleyheathwi.org.uk/ A huge “Thank you” to everyone in our choir for their time, effort and commitment throughout the year, which brings enjoyment and pleasure to so many, as well as raising money.

DOWNEND WI HELLO! At our October meeting, we held our AGM, followed by “Wine Tasting with a Difference”. We had six different types of wine and tried them with a variety of cheeses, chocolate, lemon, salt and sugar. Who would have believed that a Riesling goes well with 80% dark chocolate? Just in time for Christmas at our meeting on November 28 we have Gift Frippery demonstrating how to wrap and make presents look beautiful. This meeting is free to guests so come along and learn a new skill, eat some cake and drink tea and find out about us. We will meet again on January 30 at 7.30pm in Christchurch Hall and we would love some new members Julie

The charity, which supports children with terminal illnesses in Bristol, Bath, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, appealed to friends, supporters and service users to vote online and help them win a slice of the £3m up for grabs as part of Freemasonry’s 300th anniversary celebrations. Julian Withers, Jessie May, said: “This grant will make a huge difference to our local charity." The Freemasons' Provincial Grand Master for Gloucestershire, Tim HendersonRoss, said: "This money is being distributed to charities that have a track records for spending wisely."

n MESSAGE FROM OUR MP
All I want for Christmas is ...
Chris Skidmore writes for
Emersons Green Voice
I WANT to start this month’s column by wishing everyone a very happy Christmas and New Year. As 2017 comes to an end this gives me the perfect opportunity to look back over the last year and to see what we have achieved both locally and nationally. 2017 has been a very busy year on both the personal and political fronts; with my children, Clementine and Henry, now 3 and 1, my wife Lydia and I have been balancing work and hectic home life. Of course, the General Election in May was a particularly busy time as I travelled across the constituency knocking on doors and speaking to people from across the local area. I was very humbled to have been re-elected to represent our constituency for the third time running. I’d like to thank all those constituents who voted for me, I was absolutely delighted to increase my share of the vote in our area from 48% in 2015 to nearly 55% this year with over 26,750 people choosing to vote for me. I am very grateful that, for the first time since 2010, the majority of local voters chose me as their candidate. Having served you for seven years as your MP, I understand the great responsibility I have in helping to look after our area. As someone who was born locally in Longwell Green, grew up here, and who has lived here all my life, there is no greater honour that the represent you as your Member of Parliament. On the local front in Emersons Green, I have had a busy year working alongside South
Gloucestershire Council in order to manage the impact of the unexpected emergency repairs to the Bromley Heath Viaduct. I know that the works will have affected many people in the local area and therefore I was determined to help secure the additional £2.3m needed to reduce the project duration from over 50 weeks down to 33. I will continue to work alongside the council and local councillors to minimise the impact of these repairs on local residents. Furthermore, my campaign for a new junction at Emersons Green for the M4 to link with the A4174 continues and I remain committed to pushing for the western option near the Science Park which I believe will be highly beneficial for residents and businesses in the local area. I am also very pleased to note that plans for a new footbridge over the ring road linking Lyde Green and Emersons Green Retail Park have been given the green light. I have strongly supported the building of the new bridge as I believe that it will provide a valuable link between the new communities and people moving to Lyde Green with the excellent facilities that Emersons Green has to offer. The new bridge will also be built with adjoining ramps for cyclists and this will be a great step forwards for sustainable transport in the local area and a valuable addition to the existing cycle network. I understand that construction of the bridge will begin offsite early in 2018 with the installation taking place in 2019.
I have also had a busy year in my role as Minister in the Cabinet Office, with responsibility for democratic engagement and voting reform, I have been working towards making it easier for people with disabilities to register to vote and to cast their vote itself. Over the past few months, I have been working alongside the Royal National Institute of Blind People in order to ensure that visually impaired people get information in the format they need in order to break down any barriers they may face in engaging with the democratic process. This will mean that, for the first time, councils like South Gloucestershire will be able to provide extra help and support to people who may need it in order to participate in our elections. This will be an important step forwards in removing any existing barriers to democratic participation and I am proud to be leading the way on projects such as this. I would like to wish readers a great year ahead for 2018 and if there are ever any issues that you would like to raise with me then please do not hesitate to drop into one of my surgeries which I hold at my office in Hanham or you can reach me on 0117 908 1524 or by emailing me at chris@ chrisskidmore.com. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

n VET’S ADVICE
Beware winter hazards for your pets IT’S hard to believe that autumn is over and we have the long cold winter months ahead of us! These are some seasonal tips to keep your pets safe and healthy this winter: • Do not give your pet chocolate, unless it is the dog variety! Chocolate contains theobromine that is poisonous to pets. Make sure any chocolates including chocolate tree decorations are kept well out of your pet’s reach. Symptoms include vomiting,
diarrhoea, collapse, seizures, heart failure and death. • What we consider to be treats can be extremely dangerous to our pets: Christmas cake, mince pies, macadamia nuts, onion, garlic, chives, alcohol, avocado, grapes and raisins should all be avoided. Ingestion can be toxic and sometimes fatal. • Some Christmas plants such as Poinsettia, Holly, Mistletoe, Amaryllis and Lilies are highly toxic. Keep them well out of the reach of animals. • Antifreeze is a very sweet palatable poison for our pets, especially cats and often fatal even in small amounts. • Rock salt (to de-ice paths and roads) is a mixture of salt and grit which easily attaches to pets’ paws and fur and if licked off, It can cause vomiting and
lethargy and in severe cases lead to convulsions and kidney failure. It is very important to remember to wipe your pet’s feet and their fur on their tummy after they have been for a walk. • Older pets with arthritis will feel more discomfort in the cold so make sure they are kept as warm
as possible when going outside. • Make sure your small furries are kept warm by providing extra bedding and covering their hutches. Check water bottles daily to ensure they don’t freeze. It is very important that you contact us straight away on 0117 910 9352 if you suspect your pet has eaten anything poisonous.

Movember man talk could save your life Make time for man talk! That’s the advice being given to men as part of the national Movember campaign – the month that spotlights men’s health issues. A Movember survey showed that while 70% of men say their friends could rely on them for support only 48% say that they would rely on their friends! In other words men are happy to listen to other people’s problems but not so happy to talk about their own. Professor Hashim Hashim a world-renowned Consultant Urological Surgeon at Spire Bristol Hospital said: “The key to successful treatment is down to men facing up to the fact that they might have a problem and seeking medical help as soon as possible.” “It is well known that men tend to keep things bottled up when it comes to medical issues but that really is the worst thing they can do. Growing a moustache in support of Movember is great but it’s when the talking starts that we
know we are getting somewhere.” Prostate cancer is the commonest type of cancer in men with over 41,000 new cases diagnosed in the UK every year, claiming approximately 10,500 lives. However it’s not just cancer related conditions that affect a man’s prostate. Despite thousands of men suffering from it on a daily basis, an enlarged prostate isn’t exactly the usual choice of conversation over a pint at your local pub. The condition known as benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) and hypertrophy (BPH) does not occur because of the presence of cancer, but due to the fact the prostate continues to grow throughout most of a man’s adult life. The condition itself is not a threat to a man’s health, but it can have dramatic impacts on their quality of life. As the prostate enlarges it can cause pressure on the bladder causing a variety of symptoms

including; having difficulty when starting to urinate; a weak urine flow (stopping and starting); a sensation of not fully emptying your bladder leading to having to urinate more frequently (especially at night), subsequently disrupting your sleeping patterns and likewise that of your partner. A midnight trip to the bathroom is never warmly welcomed by anyone. “Surgery can be fraught with side-effects - bleeding, incontinence and sexual problems - whilst tablets may be ineffective or cause sexual function problems,” said Consultant Urologist, Professor Hashim. There is, however, a revolutionary day-case technique available which is suitable for most men, bringing relief to help them empty their bladders better with improved quality of life and minimal side-effects. “A new treatment called UroLift avoids the invasiveness of surgery and the unwanted side effects of
Email: sales@emersonsgreenvoice.co.uk
tablets. It involves no blood loss or 'cutting' and takes 10-15 minutes for implants to be inserted into the prostate, opening the prostatic urethra, restoring urinary flow and satisfactory bladder function.” explained Prof. Hashim “'It is being hailed the new minimally invasive treatment of the future for the majority of those with troublesome symptoms due to BPE(H) - only in rare cases with atypical prostate anatomy is Urolift unsuitable” He continued. UroLift is available at Spire Bristol Hospital and patients can usually be in and out of hospital within the same day. To find out more information about men’s prostate health and the treatment options available please book onto our complimentary patient information evening with Professor Hashim Hashim on Thursday 30 November at 7.00pm. n PETER'S VISION
I see a bright future for patients
This month’s certainly been a busy one for us. Combining an ever growing clinic workload (always a delight) with looking after the admin side of running the practices (not always a delight) as well as attending an Eye Conference has kept us on our toes this month. This Eye Conference was a fascinating one for two reasons. The first the predictions for the future of Optometry (our profession of eye care & vision) were actually quite gloomy. If you ask me, someone needs to clean their glasses! I was reminded of a slogan, which adapted to our logo colour scheme would say “ the future’s bright, the future is blue”. Our principals of care, trust & integrity are at the heart of all we do. Our focus is on enhancing the lives of our patients with thorough and in-depth eye care and providing you the clearest vision. Adding the personal touch to this experience helps us build lasting relationships with our patients who we genuinely care for. Why
wouldn’t we? You trust us to look after your eyes & vision - and it’s our absolute pleasure to continue to do so. I see a bright future for our patients as we continue to develop the eye care & vision services you can benefit from. We are always evaluating new technologies and products to see which will provide true value to our patients lives. Not all that you may read about in certain newspapers is going to be available or helpful for you, but we are always happy to discuss them anyway! The most pleasing thing to gather from the conference was that one of the largest community service software providers has decided that rather than set the programs to suit the developers they will now focus on making the software suit the needs of you - our patients. What a hallelujah moment it was to hear this! I cannot tell you how exciting it is, or maybe this just shows my quiet techie side?
The team at Turners I have from time to time been noted to enjoy my toys (high tech instruments) quite a lot, and when they enhance the care we provide our patients then why not! It’s often a time of year when watery, sore or gritty eyes return - if this is you, well come on in and see us, the Bristol Dry & Watery Eye Clinic runs in our practices just for you! To discuss the eye care and vision services we offer or to book an extended eye exam, for yourself
or your family, please call 0117 962 2474 or 0117 965 4434, book via our website, or you are very welcome to pop in to our practices in Henleaze or Fishponds and say Hi! I hope you all have a super Christmas & Happy New Year!

Christmas Gift Envelopes With Christmas just around the corner, why not create a small fabric gift envelope for each member of the family? Small enough to place in a couple of chocolate coins or tiny gift, you could even make 24 and create your own advent calendar! Have fun – and a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!
1. Place both of your fabrics right side together and pin 3 sides in place. Machine or hand stitch these 3 sides leaving a seam allowance of 0.5cms
2. Turn right side out and iron flat. Now take your two open edges and fold each open edge in on itself by 0.5cms, iron in place. This creates a seam to close your fabric.
You will need: 2 squares of contrasting fabric each measuring 14.5cms x 14.5cms Scissors Sewing machine Thread Iron Fabric glue Embellishments Pins
5. Place a thin line of fabric glue along the bottom diagonals of these folds and now fold up the bottom of your ‘envelope’, ensuring that the glued edges are covered. Pin in place whilst the fabric glue dries.
6. Almost there! Fold down the top flap of your ‘envelope’ so that it meets the point below and covers the edges - you can decide how much you would like to fold the top flap down here. Iron in place. Fabric glue or hand sew a piece of Velcro to the underside of the envelope flap and the fabric meeting it beneath.
3. Place a line of fabric glue along one of these edges and glue the seam shut.
4. Once dry, take your fabric and place it lining fabric up. Now take one corner and bring it towards the centre of your square by 4cms. Pin in place. Repeat with the opposite corner.

£5,000 grant boost for cricket club CARSONS & Mangotsfield Cricket Club have been awarded a grant of £5000 from Emersons Green Town Council for new ground machinery. The Pomphrey Hill based side took over the preparing of the cricket square in 2016 after five years of South Gloucestershire Council preparing the wicket. During the season the club spent more than £5000 of club funds on a new roller but they found themselves woefully short of the equipment needed to prepare a safe and good wicket. Vice chairman Andy King submitted the application and said: “After a long discussion with the ground staff, they came up with a list of items that were needed to ensure that the autumn repair work could be completed, along with equipment that was needed in the spring and during the season.”
Councillor Rich Nichols, Mayor of Emersons Green Town Council, said he applauded the good work the club does in engaging children and adults in
sport and the town council was pleased to support the funding of new equipment. The club runs sides from age 7 to 17 and also run three
Saturday sides and one Sunday side and is always on the lookout for new players so contact Andy for more information on 07988 745985or andrewzking@sky.com

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE
When the chiro becomes the patient
Blog 46: Golf and gallstones WHAT a painful month I am having…firstly I got caught doing 36mph in a 30. I don’t even remember it but according to the letter I was on my way to a Bristol Rovers game. We shouldn’t speed so I must accept my fine and go to a speeding workshop which will be conveniently near where I live now in Keynsham. I am ashamed to admit that this isn’t my first workshop for driving too fast. I have learnt from my first though and will just sit and listen. There are many good points to learn at a speeding workshop (maybe they should make you do one before you get your licence) but my favourite was how the nice instructor man was pointing out that all of the ‘reasons to speed’ that we had written down were actually excuses and the ‘reasons not to speed’ were genuine reasons…I agreed with him until I read that some deep and maybe disturbed thinker put down ‘escape’ as a reason to speed… With that to look forward to I was happily getting on with my rewarding work at Cleve Chiropractic when I awoke one morning and my upper middle stomach started to grumble. Being a responsible and medically trained chiropractor, I promptly ignored the pain and carried on into work… Treating the first patient however caused me so much pain that I nearly fell over…that’s not a normal stomach ache I thought… and I carried on. After 2 new patient examinations the pain was referring up to my right shoulder blade so I considered drinking some water to help… after 3 more treatments I was nearly being sick and felt ready to pass out…maybe I should go to hospital. It was my first time as a patient in Southmead and despite having trouble to park if I wasn’t in so much pain I could honestly say that I found the whole place delightful! It’s all shiny and new looking, resembling an airport lounge more than a hospital. I was happy to see only a 2 hr wait and sat down with my magazine ready to wait but within a few minutes I was called in to be checked and sent straight through (maybe because I couldn’t stand up straight). I was told to
go and sit on a very comfortable reclining chair where a nurse who happened to be an old family friend and neighbour put a canula into me and pumped me full of IV paracetamol, anti-inflammatories and an anti-sickness drug. That helped. After scans and blood tests it was believed that I have an inflamed gallbladder (cholecystitis) and potential gallstones. I explained to the doctor that I was supposed to be going to London that night for a British Chiropractic Association meeting. She said I probably wouldn’t die if I went but…etc, etc. So now, a few days later, I have to see how it goes and come back if it gets worse. I actually feel a little bit better, but I have booked in to see a gall bladder surgeon this afternoon. It’s £150 for a consultation only but right now I will pay anything. So here I sit on my sofa catching up on paper work and writing this blog. I wonder if I will still have all of my organs by the time I write next month’s blog… Shifting subjects smoothly this is the time of year I traditionally go and have golf lessons with my amazing coach Emma ‘ theladygolfcoach’ Brown from the Kendleshire Golf Club. I found her a few years ago through a golf pro patient who told me how great she is. I was new to golf and her skill in teaching was fabulous and soon enough she had me working through all the different aspects of golf. Most of all I enjoy Emma’s personality, she helps me forget about the stresses of life for an hour or so. Over the years I have sent Emma lots of clients so naturally we set up a referral system where she will offer 10% off her lessons if you mention me to her when you book. Let’s hope I can get though these gallstones so I can get back down there to help improve my short game asap! Contact Emma via her email: emmabrownpga@ gmail.com or via her website www. theladygolfcoach.co.uk.
