n NEWS IN BRIEF Plea for witnesses to ‘unprovoked attack’

Ken Loach to attend screening

Shop sign ‘not right for conservation area’

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to an assault in Mangotsfield that left a man with a fractured eye socket and a broken wrist. The victim was walking along Emersons Green Lane away from the Lamb Inn pub at about 9pm on Sunday February 18. He was assaulted by three men in a seemingly unprovoked attack. The three men are described as having Eastern European accents. If you saw the incident or have any information please call 101 and quote reference 5218037421.

KEN Loach, the Bafta-winning director of I, Daniel Blake and The Wind that Shakes the Barley, will visit Kingswood next week for a screening of his most recent film. about the benefits system. The screening - organised in collaboration with the Kingswood Constituency Labour Party and foodbank and community group, Juice - is at the Kingswood Entertainment Centre and Sports Club (104 Regent Street, BS15 8HP) on Friday 2nd March at 7pm and is open to the public.

OPPOSITION is growing to “inappropriate” signage on a shop in the centre of Pucklechurch. Several residents have written to South Gloucestershire Council objecting to the large brightly-lit sign that was installed after the general store at the junction of Westerleigh Road and Abson Road was taken over by Spar. They say it is out of keeping with the conservation area. The applicants have submitted an application for permission to retain the sign. It can be viewed online: PK18/0314/ADV.

MPs: We only support Western Option for M4 link THE £500,000 feasibility study into a possible new junction on the M4 and a link road to the A4174 ring road is due to be completed this month. South Gloucestershire Council and Highways England commissioned the £500,000 study into plans for a junction 18a, which supporters say could ease traffic congestion in Bristol’s north-east fringe. Later this year the council will havec to decide whether there is a case to be put to the Government for the project, which is set to cost between £250m and £470m. Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore, who won the funding for the study after years of campaigning, and Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall, say they remain of the view that the junction should be at Emersons Green. There was outrage last year when the first phase of the study suggested a junction and link road at Pucklechurch instead -the so-called Eastern Option. The two MPs met Highways England last month to push the case for the Western Option. They handed over a letter in which they criticised the “cloud of uncertainty” that the Eastern Option proposals had caused for residents.

“We are particularly concerned about the considerable amount of Greenbelt land which would be lost if the Eastern Option is carried forward. This factor, alongside the destruction of the other valuable open

spaces not classified as Greenbelt in the Pucklechurch area, would have a drastic impact on our communities and the residents who live in them,” they said. “A number of residents also raised concerns with us on the levels of increased traffic on the adjoining road network which would surround the Eastern Option link road, including areas of Siston, Warmley, Mangotsfield and others. The increased number of cars on roads such as Siston Lane would be detrimental to the area and pose a significant safety risk. We feel that the Western Option would alleviate the risk while simultaneously reducing traffic on the northern section of the A4174, which often becomes an issue. “An M4 Link next to the A4174 where the two roads virtually touch would help alleviate current congestion and increase productivity for businesses in the West. We do therefore believe that a new junction for the M4 is needed but will only support the proposals if the flawed Eastern Option is abandoned. It is clear to us by the levels of correspondence we have received that the community are not behind this option and nor are we.”

MetroBus latest From Page 1 said: “At the moment we are projecting services to start in the spring once the Bromley Heath viaduct works have completed. The exact dates will be decided by the operator of the route.” Despite the delays caused by the ring road work, the Emersons Green route looks set to be the first to open. The project overall has hit a number of hold-ups, including the access problems at Parkway

and the need install fast-ticket machines. The spokesman said all the i-Point ticket machines would be installed by the last week in July. MetroBus uses bus lanes and guided busways. It’s connected to the city’s traffic light system to ensure it moves quickly past other road vehicles. It is predicted that the journey time from Emersons Green to Broadmead will be cut from 40 minutes to 29. Viaduct update: Pages 6 & 7

Safety concerns as School Square PARENTS, staff and pupils are increasingly fed up about the much-delayed opening of School Square in Lyde Green. The pedestrianised space, directly outside the front of the primary school and to the side of the Lyde Green Community Centre, is still fenced off, 18 months after the school opened. No one can use the the main entrance on Willowherb Road. Parents have to walk up a lane and around the right hand perimeter of the school to drop their children off at a side entrance by the playground. This is not just inconvenient but also unsafe, because cars park on the double yellow lines nearest to the lane when the weather is bad, rather than using the park and ride nearby. Children have to navigate through small spaces between parked cars when crossing the road, which is especially dangerous when they have their

hoods up because of the rain. Access for staff and visitors also brings security concerns. They have to use the gates off Thistle Close. At the entrance

doors by the school’s hall, they have to wait for a member of staff to leave the main school office and walk over to let them in, a problem when only one

member of staff is available. The square cannot open until all issues between the developers and South Gloucestershire Council have been resolved. The

remains fenced off council says it is hopeful this will be some time this month. Wendy Westwood is the interim headteacher at Lyde Green Primary, having taken over the role in January. She is part of the Castle School Educational Trust (CSET), the organisation that runs the school, and moved to Lyde Green from her position as deputy head at Charfield Primary. She will be in post until the permanent headteacher of Lyde Green Primary, Mark Jackson, officially takes over in April, after which she will stay on at the school as deputy head. Talking about the issues that the delayed opening of School Square are having on the school as well as the local community, she said: “Since I took over as interim headteacher in January, I have been made to feel really welcome by the school community and the local community too, but I have also

had several parents come and speak to me about the drop off and parking issues as a result of School Square still not being open. Some parents have children at two separate schools and therefore need to take them to each place during the school run, and so the current access issue is even more of a concern for them. “We want to be good neighbours and parking and access issues to the school are a real frustration for me. Although it is a manageable situation, it is highly inconvenient for parents, pupils, staff and our neighbours and is out of our control at the moment until School Square officially opens. All we can do is remind parents of the need to park considerately and ask the trust to contact the council for updates.” A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: “We appreciate that the lack of

access to the school via School Square has been frustrating and inconvenient. “We have been working with the consortium to resolve outstanding issues with the site, including ensuring that the square is fit for its intended public use. As part of that process liaison has taken place with the school who raised some health and safety concerns, which have now been addressed. “The transfer agreement is now with solicitors and the parties are aiming to complete early in the next term with a view to handing over management of the square to the school and community centre, making it a true public space for the community to enjoy.” A spokesman for the

developers’ consortium said: “We are keen to open the square as soon as possible. The works were completed in time for the reopening of the primary school last autumn. The transfer is not related to the Community Centre in any way. We are awaiting confirmation from the SGC legal team that the transfer can be completed. Once we have this the square can be opened.”

Viaduct facts and figures • Preparatory work started in April 2017, the contraflow went live in July 2017 • More than a million litres of water were used for the hydrodemolition process which involved removing concrete from the old structure using high pressure water jets • Weekend work has been carried out every weekend since July 2017 • 47,500 metres of scaffold tube with 15,000 fittings were used to make the scaffolding structure which allows people to work below the ring road safely • The scaffolding houses 9,000 metres of scaffold board which laid end to end would take you from Bromley Heath to College Green in central Bristol • The scaffolding has been designed to support a total load of 400 tonnes • Six to eight people worked on constructing the scaffolding seven days a week from the end of August to December last year • The structure also features a section of bridging beams to allow the scaffolding to span 20 metres across the River Frome. It has been designed to resist a water flow of three metres per second, should flooding occur • Since the project began, the council's road safety team has worked with nine local schools to encourage other ways of getting to school which has seen an increase in the number of pupils who are now actively travelling to school. This includes walking, park and stride, scooter, bus etc.

Delays to continue as road works hit 'unforeseen' snags DRIVERS can expect delays on the ring road near Downend until the beginning of May. The repairs to the 1960s Bromley Heath viaduct, which have reduced the A4174 to two lanes instead of four since last summer, have hit a snag. It means the contraflow will not be removed at the end of this month and the programme will not be completed within 33 weeks as had been hoped, although it is still likely to be finished in less than the year that was anticipated originally. Work is continuing on site seven days a week and the latest information can be found at www. southglos.gov.uk/bhviaduct or

www.facebook.com/bhviaduct. A spokesman for South Gloucestershire Council said: “We’re now at the stage where the nature of the work which is left to do must all be carried out consecutively and many of the tasks, such as concreting one of the parapets and plinths, waterproofing and resurfacing the new deck are all weather dependent.” Colin Hunt, cabinet member for transport and a councillor for Emersons Green, apologised to road users for the inconvenience. “We have done all that we can to carry out these essential works as quickly as we can and to help minimise the impact to people’s

March, 2018 journeys,” he said. “This has included working longer days, at weekends and at night where possible and our main focus now is to get the contraflow removed from the A4174 ring road by the end of April. “With a project of this scale we have run into some unforeseen difficulties along the way, such as it taking longer to construct the vast scaffolding structure which is required for people to work safely under the viaduct. And the additional time needed to remove some of the concrete from the steel girder which supports the structure. However, on the whole, the progress that has been made to date cannot be under estimated and I would like to thank local residents and road users for their continued patience as we continue with these vital improvements to the viaduct.” Other works, which do not require the contraflow, remain on schedule and will continue until June, the council says. The council has written to local schools asking children to suggest items to go into a time capsule to be placed at the site.

On the running beat

The family that runs together ... James, Stuart and Eilidh with parents Alison and Chris

A FAMILY from Emersons Green are trying to turn a negative situation into something more positive by completing a virtual run for charity. The Hardings have lived in the area for a year, having moved from Elgin, Moray, in Scotland. It was October 2016 at the Dr Grays Hospital in the town where parents Chris and Alison first received the news that their four and a half year old son, Stuart, had leukaemia after he had fallen ill four days earlier. Stuart was admitted to the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, the closest cancer specialist centre, nearly two hours from their home. In January 2017, Chris and Alison moved with Stuart, his identical twin brother Jamie and little sister Eilidh to Bristol with Chris’s job in the RAF, and Stuart has since been treated at Bristol Children’s Hospital. Ten days after his initial diagnosis, Chris and Alison were told that Stuart had a form of

National Award winners of the Good Garage Scheme

leukaemia that was extremely rare in children - Philadelphia chromosome-positive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. To treat this, Stuart has undergone regular chemotherapy, as well as taking steroids and antibiotics. So far he has spent seven months as an inpatient due to infection complications as a result of his low blood counts, with the vast majority of that time being spent in isolation. In June 2017 the family were told that there was no evidence of leukaemia left in Stuart’s body, so he wouldn’t need a bone marrow transplant. Instead, he would continue with the course of chemotherapy to discourage the chance of relapse occurring. Fast forward to today and Stuart, now five, is still undergoing intensive treatment (when The Voice recently spoke to Alison about his condition, he had undergone four blood transfusions and three platelet transfusions in just one week),

with ‘PC Stuart’, 5 but is now largely out-patient based, which has come as a huge relief to the family. At this stage, Stuart still has a few months of intensive treatment left, and will then move on to maintenance treatment until October. It is hoped that Stuart will be well enough to join Jamie at Mangotsfield CofE Primary School in the very near future, and the family have also put together a list of things that Stuart would like to do when he is better, such as travel on a steam train, bounce on a bouncy castle, and even go on holiday to Disneyland. Stuart also recently had the opportunity to visit Staple Hill police station and sit in a police car, something that was particularly special for him as he wants to be a police officer when he’s older. Alison said: “When I first took Stuart to the doctors we just thought he had a virus, so we were absolutely gobsmacked when we were told what was wrong. He’s had non-stop treatment ever since, and so life has kind of stopped for our family over the last 15 months. It’s also meant that we haven’t been able to meet many people in the local community either as Stuart has had to spend a lot of

time indoors at home. “Stuart doesn’t like talking about the fact that he’s poorly, he doesn’t like fuss and so just buries it away. He’s so brave, he doesn’t complain at all.” Despite Stuart still having treatment, the family have decided to try to do something positive together in order to raise funds for three blood cancer charities – Bloodwise, DKMS and Anthony Nolan. Alison added: “It’s been a really hard time for us as a family, so we took up running in July 2017 in order to try and find something positive that we could aim for together. We wanted to try and raise funds for three important blood cancer charities at the same time, as well as raise awareness of childhood cancer and what these kids have to go through. “Anything that we can do to help will be an amazing thing, not just for Stuart but for all the other families in the same situation too.” The family are taking part in a virtual run from Dr Grays Hospital, to Royal Aberdeen Hospital, and finally to Bristol Children’s Hospital, covering a total distance of 570 miles. Jamie, Eilidh and Stuart (when

he is feeling well enough) are doing a local Parkrun as part of this, but Chris and Alison can’t always commit to these events because Stuart’s treatment is so unpredictable. Instead they have been completing their runs in the evenings, and have been along to the Emersons Green Running Club too. The family have been recording their runs on Map My Run and have recently crossed the border into England at the

These twins are a force to be reckoned with ... PC PAUL Fortune has certainly helped to put a smile on Stuart’s face after he recently gave him the chance to tour Staple Hill police station and have a look inside a real- life police car. PC Paul first met Stuart at a coffee morning at Mangotsfield CofE primary school in January. Alison knew that Stuart wants to be a police officer when he’s older, and so decided to take him along as he was feeling well enough. Alison said “Stuart was so chuffed to have a chat and to try on his hat. It was such a lovely moment. He was delighted to meet PC Paul and we wanted to say thanks to him for brightening his day.” Following the coffee morning, PC Paul helped to arrange an afternoon visit to the police station for Stuart and his brother Jamie during the February half term, where both boys were delighted to receive their own personal epaulettes that had been made especially. “This was one of the many items on Stuart’s ‘to do list’, and we are so appreciative to PC Paul and his team for making it happen”, Alison said. PC Fortune said: “It was a pleasure to meet Stuart, who is one of the bravest people I have ever met. I was delighted to arrange a visit to the police station.” Police column: Page 19

Community cafe team unveiled MEET the team who will be running the cafe at Lyde Green’s new Community Centre café. Coffee at Lyde is made up of three friends who all live locally to Lyde Green. Kane holds a masters degree in neuropsychology, and set up a few businesses with friends while at university; Callum holds professional qualifications in graphics and design and recently started a printing business; and Ollie brings a wealth of catering and hospitality expertise. They want to bring together their combined business experience, skills and energy to create a café the community will be proud of. Kane said: “Between us we have great business experience and skills, but most importantly, a lot of energy. When we saw the opportunity to submit a proposal to become the Community Centre café operator, it filled us with excitement. “This café will play a key role in strengthening the community of Lyde Green, so it needed to be accurately planned, thoroughly prepared, and passionately delivered. These are all things we thought we could do.” As part of the three-stage tender process, which was run by Lyde Green Community Association (LGCA), the Coffee at Lyde team had to submit a three-year business plan. As part of this, they spent a lot of time researching the area and the demographics of Lyde Green, to ensure they would be providing something for everyone. Coffee at Lyde received the news that they had been chosen

as the café operator in December 2017, and were both pleased and relieved at the same time. Callum said: “All the time, hard work, late evenings, and rehearsals we put in paid off. It also dawned on us that we couldn’t take our foot off of the pedal. We needed to continue working hard to make sure we can deliver what we said we would.” The Coffee at Lyde team think they can bring a coffee shop to Lyde Green that has the look of a professional chain, but the feel of a friendly community cafe. Speaking of their plans, Ollie added: “What we plan to do is to start simple; most of the feedback we have received has been asking to supply good tea and coffee, so we want to focus on getting this right first. “We also want to focus on being family-friendly, so we are working on a kids menu. Over time and with feedback, we will develop our menu, offering new and exciting options to residents.” Once the café opens, residents can expect to see a menu that features healthy snacks such as veggie sticks and hummus and tempting treats like carrot cake and brownies from local bakers, then the introduction of lunchtime dishes such as

The children from the Overndale Road school handed over their bag of HUGS at a special assembly attended by Captain Michael Allen from the Salvation Army. Captain Allen told the children all about the work of the Logos House Salvation Army Lifehouse, a hostel in central Bristol, where the bags were distributed. He explained the plight of the homeless people that they help at Logos House and about one man who cried when he received a hat given to the hostel, saying "Somebody remembered me". Headteacher Elizabeth Morgan said: "We were delighted to be able to help such a worthy cause.

n TRAVEL

IF, like me, you work full time then your annual leave is incredibly precious. You want to see new sights and experience new activities, but work just keeps getting in the way. This doesn’t always have to be the case. Right here in the UK, we have some incredible places to see and things to do. If you fancy a hike out in the countryside, some tea and cake in a stately home or even a road trip around Scotland, it’s all possible without jetlag rearing its ugly head. If you’ve not discovered the beauties of Scotland, you can expect to find emerald hills, sapphire blue water, trendy cities and never ending landscapes. We visited a couple of years ago, but due to work obligations, we only had 5 days to explore and see as much of Scotland as we could, including Edinburgh, Loch

A very Scottish road trip

Jacobite Steam Train at Glenfinnan Viaduct Lomond, Glenfinnan, Loch Ness and the Isle of Skye. Our road trip began in trendy Edinburgh, which involved a visit to Edinburgh Castle, eating haggis in one of the local restaurants and admiring the skyline from the top of Holyrood Park. Here’s a quick fact we learned during our stay that you might enjoy: the Scottish Crown Jewels were lost in the castle for over 100 years after being locked away in a chest and forgotten about. Thankfully, Sir Walter Scott and a group of men set out to recover the jewels in 1818. Driving west from Edinburgh, we travelled to Loch Lomond in the Trossachs National Park, which is a definite must see, especially as Scotland is so renowned for its expansive lakes. At Loch Lomond, there’s a path to take you around

the outskirts of the lake, or you can choose to see it from inside a canoe or kayak for about £12 (like we did!) Up next on our itinerary was Glenfinnan, which doesn’t seem to appear on many traveller’s wishlists when visiting Scotland. For any Harry Potter fans out there though, you should definitely visit! The viaduct in Glenfinnan was a filming location for the second movie. Today, you’ll spot the Jacobite Steam Train chug past a couple of times per day (better known as the Hogwarts Express!) Our final full day in Scotland (and one of my favourite days) was investigating what the Isle of Skye has to offer. What I learned during that day was that Portree is a great pitstop for various restaurants, bars and shops, while the northernmost tip of the island is where you’ll

discover countless waterfalls, incredible ocean views and ancient castle ruins. Although I know there is so much more to see in Scotland (my travel wishlist definitely grew whilst we were there), the fact that it is such a close proximity to us means we can all head there time and time again. All that’s standing in the way is an hour’s flight (or to make a road trip out of it) and a quick request to our Managers for more time off for travelling. Care to join me? Safety fears over fallen tree at footpath WARNING notices which have been put up to stop people using a dangerous footpath at a Downend beauty spot are being ignored. Members of Friends of Lincombe Barn Park and Woods were dismayed to see a large oak tree had fallen and blocked Jubilee Walkway alongside the River Frome, in between Lincombe Barn Park and Frenchay Bridge. The tree fell after two nights of very strong winds in early January and took large sections of path with it. Official notices were put up either end of the path along with tape to stop people using the walkway but are being ignored. The tree cannot be removed until it has been inspected by the Environment Agency but meanwhile people are being advised to stay away for their own safety. Diane Paddon, secretary of the Friends group, said: "A

Look out for the wildflower meadow THE Friends of Lincombe Barn Park and Woods are looking forward to seeing the new wildflower meadow begin to burst into bloom this year, though it will take a few years to fully mature. Upcoming events include Star Gazing with a local astronomer (limited places) on Friday February 23 from 7.30-9pm. There will also be a Spring Clean/Litter Pick from 10am-1pm Saturday March 17; a Dawn Chorus at 5am Saturday April 21; and a Bat Talk on Friday May 18 from 7-8pm. A Tree Talk takes place on Saturday June 2 from 10.30am-noon. Please email diane.paddon@blueyonder.co.uk or visit lincombeparkwoods.wix.com/lincombe-woods for details. member reported the fallen oak tree over Jubilee Walkway to South Gloucestershire Council on January 7 and, concerned for people’s safety, subsequently put up temporary warning notices. "We were informed that the safety issue caused by damage to the path will be investigated by South Gloucestershire Council and that the oak would have

this is dealt with as a matter of urgency." A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: "We are aware of the fallen tree located on a footpath alongside the River Frome in Downend, on our border with Bristol. The matter is currently with the Environment Agency, who are currently assessing the fallen tree and will decide if any action is necessary. "Our officers have assessed the damaged footpath and are arranging for its repair and this will be completed as soon as possible. "We have put up notices to advise footpath users of the closure. The weir remains accessible from Frenchay Bridge." The Friends group had recently secured funding to improve signage and accessibility around the woods but this will be put on hold as the safety issue of the path takes priority.

Initially it will cover Burley Grove, Long Road, Rodway Road, Valley Road and Almond Way, and it could be expanded if it proves successful. Mr Heath, who is well known in the area for pastoral and fundraising activities, has been working with Councillor Michael Bell, leafletting homes and asking as many residents as possible to contact him to express their wish to become a member. He can be contacted by phone on 0117 9497016 or 07507 168700 or by email cliveeheath@hotmail.co.uk

Let's put Mangotsfield on the map A GROUP of residents has resolved to work together to “put Mangotsfield back on the map”. Fifteen people attended the inaugural meeting of the Mangotsfield Residents Association arranged by Chris Amos at the Scout Hall. They feel that the village has been neglected for a number of years and is in need of a facelift and more local awareness. Councillor Michael Bell outlined the plans he has to use council money for improving the Alec Large Memorial Park with new flower beds, renovating the benches and removing unsightly shrubs. He also spoke about the idea of turning The Dame School site into an area depicting the heritage of Mangotsfield including its coal mines, chapels and churches. Councillor Bell told the meeting that the old Mangotsfield Church of England school is to be demolished and replaced by 21 homes, but the developers have donated up to

n ON THE BEAT with PC PAUL FORTUNE A MAN was jailed in February for two years and five months after admitting possessing Class A drugs with intent to supply. The 20-year-old wasn’t home when we found drugs and cash at his Downend home back in May. We issued an appeal for help to track him down and finally located him hiding in a loft. We need help to keep our communities safe from drug crime. If you have any information, call 101 or report through our website. Alternatively ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. They never ask your name or trace your call. Your information could be the final piece we need to get a search warrant. nnn AT this time of year we can get reports of ‘rogue traders’ offering to do household maintenance or gardening work – before carrying it out unnecessarily, to a poor standard, or overcharging.

While thankfully it doesn’t happen often, it does disproportionately affect older people – who are more likely to be at home during the day – and can have a significant impact on their wellbeing as well as their finances. Please help to protect any vulnerable relatives or friends by helping to find a reputable tradesperson and sharing our advice: • it’s your doorstep, your decision. Deal with any unknown and unexpected visitor through a window or use a door chain • check identification – genuine callers expect this and will wait • if you’re not sure, don’t open the door and report it by calling 101 • if you feel threatened or intimidated call 999 straight away • set up a 'No Cold Calling Zone' through South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) • sign up to utility companies’ password schemes • keep cash in the bank, not at home

IT was a pleasure to welcome fiveyear-old twins Stuart and Jamie to Staple Hill Police Station with their mum Alison. I met Stuart, from Emersons Green, who is being treated for leukaemia, at a coffee morning at Mangotsfield CofE Primary School

and was told he wanted to be a police officer when he is older. I arranged for the family to visit us at the station during half term. The boys sat in a police car and we presented them each with their own, specially-made police epaulettes.

n AROUND THE WIs

MANGOTSFIELD WI WHAT a superb meeting we had in February. All too often we take our feet and toes for granted. Becky was informative and very knowledgeable about looking after our feet. I have already booked my first pedicure of the year in anticipation of getting my flip flops out. Our meeting on March 26 will bring us Susan Marshfield who will be giving us a talk on the ‘Lighter Side of Life’. Susan is an dear friend of Mangotsfield WI and we love to have her join us. We are looking forward to a nice evening with a cuppa and cake. If anyone would like to participate in the Manor Cup – the brief is ‘a decorated egg’. For details about Craft Club,

Supper Club, Luncheon Club and any other club, details will be emailed to members shortly. Remember if we did everything we were capable of, we would actually astound ourselves! We welcome women of all ages and from any area, you don’t have to live in or around Mangotsfield to join us. Our meetings start at 7.30 and we do not charge for our visitors, you can find out more out our meetings by contacting: mangotsfieldwi@gmail.com or looking at our website: www. mangotsfieldwi.org.uk you can also follow us on Twitter @ mangotsfieldwi or you can check out our Facebook page.

BEECHMERE BELLES WI IN February, the ladies at Beechmere Belles were treated to the delights of Geeta Delish Cook, telling us all about the spices in Indian cookery and tasting some of her wonderful dishes. At our meeting on March 22, we shall be having another of our very popular craft evenings. This year we shall be making something for Easter and in our April meeting we have cake decorating. Plans for the summer activities are well under way with tai chi and a talk by ‘The Queens Bodyguard’ already planned. AFTER our lively January meeting when we learnt how to Zumba, our February get together was far more relaxed and laid back. We had engaged the services of Mother Hen Ceramics so that our members could hand decorate a heart shaped coaster. Our romantic members decorated and dedicated their coaster to the one they love. Jane Bleaken-Ball temporarily

transformed into her late grandmother Agnes for a recital, reminding us of the Suffragettes' campaigning and that 100 years had passed since some British women were granted the vote for the first time. Next month we will be learning from another famous lady from history – Marie Antoinette’s Farming Guide. Margaret Hanwell

How a green campaigner saw red over coconut wrap A TWEET from a Voice writer has sparked national conversation about the unnecessary packaging that serves big companies at the expense of the environment. Alex Morss, a naturalist and wildlife columnist for our sister paper South Bristol Voice saw red - or rather green - in her local supermarket over a shelf of coconuts shrouded in transparent plastic and yet branded as a “Genuine Coconut” and a “Natural container”. The coconut wasn’t just

wrapped in plastic; it also had with a plastic ringpull, allowing consumers to insert another piece of plastic – a straw – to drink the water inside. Alex tweeted Sainsbury’s and the coconut’s distributor, asking: “Could you please rethink your packaging @GenuineCoconut? This coconut is not sold in its natural container, without processing, as nature intended – your words. Plastic wrap / straws are not natural, sustainable or biodegradable. How can this be organic?”

• Plastics are made out of hydrocarbons from crude oil. • Plastics are synthetic, and virtually nothing in the living world has evolved the ability to digest them, so they don’t rot down. •Plastics are made of complex compounds which makes them difficult and costly to recycle, which takes energy too, so not all areas offer recycling for all plastics.

She didn’t expect her words to strike such a chord. Within hours they were being widely retweeted as the apparent absurdity struck home that one of nature’s most effective packages had been so wastefully tampered with. Within two days, the story had been covered by just about every national newspaper, from the Daily Mail to the Independent, Daily Telegraph and the Metro. Mike Coupe, chief executive of Sainsbury’s, was interviewed on BBC Breakfast TV, where he agreed that the coconut’s extra wrapping sounded “daft”, and he promised to investigate. Almost every TV channel and national radio station also covered the story as the message hit home. Sainsbury’s later responded that the packaging did help

keep the coconuts hygienic, and made it last longer. But the story had clearly caught the public mood. The cat was out of the plastic carrier bag and people started demanding supermarkets provide a plastic-free aisle, an end to disposable plastic cups, more water fountains to reduce the sale of water in plastic bottles, and more. n What are people in Emersons Green doing to help tackle unnecessary packaging? Write to us and let us know what you think!

Cath’s on a mission to help us all cut back on plastics IT’S one of the hottest topics in the country today: not Brexit, equal pay or the UK’s economy but the issue of single-use plastics. These are products that are used once and then discarded, such as water bottles, plastic cups, straws, take-away coffee cups, stirrers and most food packaging. Whether our plastic waste ends up in landfill, our countryside, our streets, our beaches or the sea, it can have a catastrophic effect on our wildlife, birds and marine life, as the BBC’s Blue Planet II showed. The Queen is supporting efforts to reduce single-use plastics on royal estates and the Church of England has urged Christians to give them up during Lent. But, as individuals, can we really do our bit to tackle such a massive environmental threat?

One Fishponds woman believes we can. Cath Moore felt so strongly about what we are doing to our planet that she made it her mission to replace single-use plastics in her home. Cath has launched a website - www.theplasticfreeshop.co.uk - after spending the past year sourcing ethical and sustainable

alternatives to everyday items, such as toothbrushes, utensils and lunch boxes. “The products at The Plastic Free Shop are a result of my own journey and quest to have a life with less plastic,” Cath said. “People can be assured that I’ve done my research and tested the products. I try to be as open

as possible and give a good description of each product.” The 54-year-old operates the business from her home in Brook Road, even offering the chance to collect items from her at prearranged times to cut down on packaging costs and waste. Single-use plastics is a subject Cath feels passionate about. “My brother is a conservation photographer and does a lot of work with the Oceanic Society and the Plastic Pollution Coalition and went off on a think tank with scientists and conservationists. He came back with a film and when I watched it, I felt really emotional. It was a real shock to my system and I thought I need to do something.” She added: “It’s easier than you may think to make simple changes to daily habits and around the home which will reduce the amount of plastic and waste.”

OUR pets are a big part of our lives, so when they fall ill or are injured, providing the best health care for them is important. Veterinary practices have access to much more sophisticated equipment than they did in the past, making it possible to detect and diagnose problems that would once have gone untreated. These types of treatments and diagnostics come at a price, leaving some owners faced with a difficult choice.

n LITTLEST RESCUE

Help - baby bunnies have caught us on the hop!

TONY, a nearly two-year-old black mini rex is looking for a wifebun and indoor furever home. He has an amazingly relaxed and laid back personality but knows what he likes...has anyone got a girlfriend out there for him? If you are interested in adopting or fostering please contact us via email thelittlestrescue@outlook.com If you would like to invite us to any fundraising events in the local area please contact us via email redminimyrtle@hotmail.com! If you would like to know anymore about the rabbits above or any other of our animals please email us thelittlestrescue@ outlook.com

THE Littlest Rescue in Staple Hill is making an urgent appeal for support after an influx of baby rabbits. Earlier this year the small animal rescue responded to a request to rehome a group of nine rabbits (three male and six female). Although they were told that the rabbits had generally been kept separately, the females were put on routine pregnancy watch. This proved necessary as, at the time of writing, four of the females have already given birth, with the other two still on pregnancy watch. Added to a further five baby rabbits from a previous rescue who also arrived pregnant, this means that the Littlest Rescue now has 20 babies to look after, as well as their parents. The babies are very cute but they bring unexpected expenses for the rescue. Each animal that comes into the rescue is neutered and vaccinated – and this is not cheap. As Georgina O'Neill from the rescue explains: “As you can imagine we are full to the brim

We would appreciate any donation big or small.” To donate, please visit http:// littlestrescue.org. Once the babies have grown a bit and been neutered and vaccinated all of these rabbits will be looking for loving homes. Please keep an eye on the rescue’s website and Facebook page (http://littlestrescue.org, https://www.facebook.com/ TheLittlestRescue). The Littlest Rescue’s motto is “Remember the little ones”. Founder Bev Taylor said: “Rabbits and other small animals need love and attention just like all pets but it is sad to see how many are neglected or abandoned. At The Littlest Rescue we care deeply about helping these animals to have a better future but, as a small, selffunded rescue, it is an ongoing challenge. We are grateful to all those who support these lovely animals.”

n PETER'S VISION WELL, we cannot actually clear fog, that requires divine intervention. However if the ‘fog’ is coming from your glasses lenses needing a jolly good clean then we can help! So to our tips for cleaning your glasses, or indeed other high performance optics such as cameras and even mobile phone screens. Using a tissue, paper towel or other paper based product is really not recommended. These are not a kind or gentle way to treat your sophisticated optics. Why you may ask… but tissues are everywhere, particularly this time of year! Well, would you use a piece of wood to clean your optical devices? Paper tissues are after all made from wood pulp, which is I agree a refined, broken down and chemically treated form of wood, but it’s still wood. Of sorts. The European Tissue Symposium has previously noted (yes they really exist, and have a fascinating website if you want to read more about paper based tissues) that each of us uses around 200 paper tissues per year for extras including wound cleaning, hand or face wiping and cleaning

Clearing the fog spectacles! At Turners Opticians our latest lenses are clearer from the inside out. Using sophisticated materials we provide you lenses with a special surface that is designed to be non stick. Particles cannot easily cling to this super slippery surface on your glasses so they form mini spots which in turn makes them easier to wipe away. Quite clever really and something you do not often see! So having admonished the use of trees for cleaning your glasses just what can you use? Well for more years than I can remember we have given you a free high tech microfibre cleaning cloth with your new glasses. This is not just because the colour nicely matches your case, but because the technology is very effective. Your Turners microfibre cloths is, as the name suggests, made of many, many small fibres. This means that rather than using a cotton shirt (not recommended

LYDIA came home from school one day and said, "Mum, I want to do a sponsored silence for baby Sam’s charity, I was thinking I could manage 24 hours…” Like many nine-year-old excitable children, Lydia does talk rather a lot, so my husband and I jokingly said: “Wow, we’d pay good money for that!” And didn’t think much more of it. The following day Lydia come home after school, and informed us she had spoken to her head teacher and class teacher; they both showed great support and suggested Lydia did her 24-hour sponsored silence the following Thursday, “as it is PE on a Thursday, so you won’t have to talk quite so much during that lesson!” That was it, the date was set. I set up a Just Giving page and Lydia wrote her entry story to inform people why the charity Sands means so much to our family. She explained that it helped us when her brother Sam died ten years ago, 45 minutes after he was born with half his heart missing. “I like to think of my big brother

Sam as my guardian angel because a year after his birthday, I was born and the same midwife that delivered Sam, was my first visitor when I entered the world. “Anyone who knows me will understand how hard it will be for me not to talk for 24 hours!” she

wrote. We set our original target at £100 - well, that was reached within hours! We increased it to £300 and it soon smashed through our third target of £500! On the day of the silence, Lydia took a new note pad and

pen to school to jot down all her conversation in her little book and Lydia’s friends and class were very supportive. The donations kept coming all day with beautiful, wonderful messages of support. Then to our total amazement, someone anonymously donated ONE HUNDRED POUNDS. It brought tears to my eyes. Every time someone donated, I felt a little hug on my heart strings, a hug for our son, Sam. People remembering our little boy, how special is is to us and understanding how Sands can help and support babies who are born very poorly and support people who lose a child. A couple of days later Lydia’s total reached a phenomenal amount: £1048.75 to be exact. If you would still like to make a donation, Lydia’s sponsor page is still live: https://www.justgiving. com/fundraising/alison-gregory12 From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, thank you, thank you to every one who supported Lydia. Baby Bank Network proves its worth BRISTOL’S Baby Bank Network has celebrated its 1,000th referral. The charity was set up three years ago to collect pre-loved baby essentials and give them to families in need. The volunteers say they are now helping the equivalent of 10 families a week. The charity works with dozens of referral partners including NextLink, Shelter and Home Start as well as midwives and health visitors across the city. Volunteers put in hundreds of hours a month at the Fishponds warehouse to check, clean and prepare packages which include cots, prams, baby clothes, toiletries and books ready for collection by referral partners. Co-founder and trustee Becky Gilbert said: "It’s a humbling moment to step back and realise that what started as an idea has very quickly evolved into tangible support for families in need. “We live in a wealthy city in

and it breaks my heart to think that there are babies that go without the basics - but with statistics showing that one in four children in Bristol are living in poverty we’ve seen demand increasing year-on-year for our service. Our main challenge now is keeping up with that demand.” Baby Bank Network helps babies under the age of one but has ambitions to extend this to all under 5s. It is also exploring options to get its own van and volunteer driver so it can deliver. “If there’s anyone out there who can help us with a van or delivery service, we’d love to hear from you. We’ve got plenty of families needing our help, plenty of items in the warehouse to give them but what we don’t always have is the means of getting these items out.” If you can help with a van/ delivery service, please drop Baby Bank Network a line at: becky@babybanknetwork.com More information at: www. babybanknetwork.com

n NEWS A CHARITY which offers children summer breaks as respite from radiation caused by the world's worst nuclear disaster is looking for a host family in or around the Downend area. The Bristol link of the Chernobyl Children's Lifeline raises money for 16 children from Belarus to visit every summer. The trips to the UK, with its the clean air and nourishing food, can add up to two years to the children's lives, which can be plagued by cancers and heart problems due to radiation caused by a nuclear accident in Chernobyl in 1986. This summer a group of Belarusian boys and girls, aged 10, will be spending four weeks’ respite, each staying two weeks with a host family. Charlie Walker, one of the charity's supporters who lives in Downend, said hosting was a really positive way to make an impact of the lives of the children. "CCLL started after the disaster to help children and their families have a better future," he said. "A continual low level radiation means that children’s immune systems suffer and there are still many cases of childhood cancers and other related illnesses, even now in 2018, as a result of this disaster. So with great care children are chosen every year for these respite breaks. We take our radiation free food, air and water for granted - but even four weeks without it gives an immediate and long term health boost. "All the boys and girls receive free eye tests, dental check-ups and measured footwear during

Charity seeks host families for 2018 Chernobyl children the stay. On top of this these children are given a hope in their future, from receiving a fun-filled holiday in a loving family home." The charity is looking for a host family for two boys for the second two weeks of their stay, from Sunday July 22 to Sunday August 5. Hosts don’t have to speak Russian as the Belarusian school teachers who accompany the children are experienced and fluent English speakers who provide around the clock support. They are also allocated buddy families for additional support, and activities and outings are planned throughout the children's stay. Home checks and DBS will be required. The work of CCLL depends entirely on volunteer donations and local support. Check out their Facebook page Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Bristol (@ccllbristol) for local fundraising events. Charlie said: "Local businesses and organisations are amazingly generous donating supplies, clothing and trips for the children to enjoy. Careers advice for students MANGOTSFIELD School welcomed 30 ambassadors from industry into the school hall to give their Year 8 students the chance to question them about their own careers, the industries they work in and their experiences. The session was part of a Year 8 Choices Day for students currently deciding which options to choose for their GCSEs and it also included taster lessons for the new subjects they can study for their GCSEs. Careers co-ordinator Carey Phillips said: "The day was a great opportunity for the business community, students and school staff to come together to talk about future careers and the skills that are important for our young people to develop both inside and outside of school."

Top marks for 10k entrants urged Fly-tipper sent to jail ethical loans to support BUST A BRISTOL-based community lender, which has a branch at Staple Hill, has been awarded the highest possible 5-star rating for its ethical loans. Bristol Credit Union has a service point at the Staple Hill Community Hub and enables people to open accounts, deposit money and make loan applications for credit at affordable rates. The Fairbanking Foundation, a national organisation aimed at encouraging financial providers to improve the financial well-being of their customers, assessed the credit union late last year and has now confirmed its 5-star Fairbanking Mark. Bristol Credit Union received the five star mark for its personal loan product. James Berry, CEO of Bristol Credit Union, said: "Improving the financial well-being of our members is at the heart of what we do. We work hard to ensure that the products we provide are fair, affordable and accessible, and to build strong relationships with our members. We also give them the tools and support they need to manage their money, all so their future is in a financially better place." A DOWNEND woman is urging runners to support breast cancer charity BUST by joining its team of runners in the Bristol 10K on Sunday May 13. BUST - Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust - was formed in 1991 by patients and is now the major funding partner for the Bristol Breast Care Centre at Southmead Hospital. Its chairwoman, Jenny Wookey, hopes to enlist as many recruits as possible to boost funds to buy advanced equipment before it is available through NHS funding. The race is its biggest annual fundraising initiative, and the charity is seeking participants who are willing to run or walk the historic Bristol harbourside route to raise money for the charity. Jenny, who was diagnosed with breast cancer 15 years ago, said: "Every year almost 55,000 women and around 400 men in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer. The advances in treatment over the past decade have been tremendous. However, we still need to do more. "Every penny of the money that BUST raises goes towards new medical equipment to aid breast cancer diagnosis and treatment at the Bristol Breast Care Centre and improves the odds of survival for those with this dreadful disease in Bristol and beyond. "So, if you have ever thought about entering Bristol’s 10K why not make 2018 the year? We all know someone who has been

The trio raised the money within two years and their impressive achievement led to the creation of the hospital’s specialist Breast Care Centre with its One Stop Clinic. All members of BUST's committee are unpaid volunteers and to date BUST has raised more than one million pounds for breast care services. A MAN has been jailed for more than a year and ordered to pay over £2,000 after being found guilty of fly tipping in South Gloucestershire. It is the longest sentence the council has secured through an environmental prosecution. The court heard that Daniel Bryant, 44, formerly of Duncombe Road, Speedwell, set up a business, ‘Magic Rubbish Clearances’, which collected controlled waste. His vehicle was seen at the scene of two separate fly tips in Cattybrook Road, Shortwood. One of these offences took place after he attempted to tip his load on Siston Common, but was seen by a resident and left, only to dump the waste on Cattybrook Road. In June he was photographed depositing mattresses at Beach Hill in Upton Cheyney. The pictures were poster on Facebook and received 3,000 ‘hits’. During the investigation, it was discovered that Bryant had been disqualified from driving in May and less than a week later was seen using the same vehicle to carry out these fly tip offences. In court, Bryant pleaded guilty to the two Cattybrook Road fly tips and was handed a custodial sentence of 68 weeks, along with a £2,070.30 in costs and £140 victim surcharge (total £2,210.30). The magistrate drew attention to him committing these offences whie disqualified, and activated a suspended sentence of 16 weeks , added to 52 weeks custody for the fly tips (26 weeks per offence).

n ADVERTISING FEATURE APPROXIMATELY 3 million people in the UK have Type 2 Diabetes. More than one hundred thousand people are diagnosed with the condition each year and it is likely another million patients have yet to be discovered. Surgeons at Spire Bristol Hospital are stressing that surgery is a more effective treatment for Type II diabetes than conventional weight loss drugs or lifestyle changes. Consultant weight loss surgeons Mr Alan Osborne and Mr James Hewes share a weight loss clinic at Spire Bristol Hospital. We talked to them and it’s clear weight loss surgery is not just for people who have exhausted other means of losing unwanted weight. Mr Osborne, who was appointed as the first Hunterian Professor in diabetic surgery in 2012 by the Royal College of Surgeons and now practices at the South West’s largest private facility says, “I have been treating patients with Type 2 Diabetes through the NHS for years, but the rise

Seize the chance to take back control of your life in demand for weight loss surgery as a treatment for those diagnosed has seen me open up a private clinic here at Spire Bristol Hospital.” Diabetic surgery involves either a gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy, which are all carried out within Bristol, with no need to travel any further. Each method assists patients by reducing their food intake. The procedures leave the patient feel full a lot quicker than normal and therefore lessening the food intake, but also beneficially it affects how your body uses insulin. Mr Hewes, who also practises at North Bristol NHS Trust based at Southmead Hospital, continues “…studies show that patients with type 2 diabetes who undergo weight loss surgery

The operations were originally designed as restrictive procedures but are now understood to alter the signalling mechanisms controlling appetite, satiety and glycaemic control. n SPOTLIGHT ON MANGOTSFIELD BELLS n NEWS

THE CHURCH of St James Mangotsfield is our oldest link with the past. It was founded and built by William de Putot, Sheriff of Gloucestershire, as a chapel of ease between 1222 and 1228. It was built as part of his Manor House which has since been demolished and is now the burial ground. The church tower had a clock and six bells, which were given to the church in 1687. In 1921 the bells were recast into a peal of eight. They were affectionately named as the 'Mangotsfield buckets'. This name was given by the ringers as they were not easy bells to ring and had a very poor tone. In 1992 the bells were recast again. They now sound much sweeter and are easier to ring.

The bells are rung for Sunday services and Wednesday evening for practice. The ringing of the bells is is a tradition that the community has kept up for many years. The St James bell ringers are looking for more individuals who are keen to learn the art of bell ringing so that these traditions can continue. We have important events in Mangotsfield fast approaching, including the Mangotsfield Festival in June and Armistice Day in November. We would like more people to learn the art of bell ringing to mark these occasions. Anyone interested contact me on 07725 466476 or email: jon.storey13@yahoo.com Jon Storey

Vertex Park gets go-ahead WORK has begun on a new business park close to the Bristol & Bath Science Park at Emersons Green. To be known as Vertex Park, it is being developed by Chancerygate, which also created the successful Apollo Park in Yate last year, Detailed planning consent has been granted for 11 units on a 4.8 acre site. It is scheduled for completion in late 2018. The leasehold business units will range in size from 4,188 sq ft to 33,928 sq ft and can also be consolidated to accommodate larger requirements. Alastair King of Chancerygate, said: “Vertex Park will bring much-needed industrial space to the Emersons Green area, where there is a severe shortage of stock and a high level of demand. “Now that we’ve been granted detailed consent, we are looking forward to getting construction under way and the scheme available for local and national companies to take occupation.” Tom Watkins of the Industrial & Logistics team at Colliers International, joint agents for the scheme with BNP Paribas and Alder King, said: “Vertex Park will provide prime industrial units in a great location. We have already received considerable interest and expect even more when work commences shortly.”

LESBIAN, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) couples and singles are being invited to an information event for LGBT Adoption and Fostering week. CCS Adoption, Bristol City Council, North Somerset and Action for Children are coming together at the Watershed on Wednesday March 7 so people can learn more about the rewards and challenges of being an adoptive or foster parent. The drop-in event takes place during LGBT Adoption and Fostering week (March 5-11) and is supported by New Family Social, the LGBT network for Foster and Adoptive families. Since 2012, there has been a significant increase in the number of LGBT adoptions. Across England, Scotland and Wales around one in ten adoptions are now by same-sex couples and the total number of LGBT adoptions that have taken place is approaching 3,000.

CCS Adoption adviser and gay adoptive parent Frances said: "I adopted two children with my partner and we didn’t experience our sexuality being a barrier to us adopting. Deciding to adopt has been the best decision we’ve ever made. We experience wonderful moments and tricky times like any adoptive parents. Our children are proud of having two mums!" The free event will be at Watershed from 6-8pm. People can drop in any time to hear presentations as well as to speak informally with LGBT Adopters, as well as experienced adoption and fostering workers who will be on hand to answer questions and provide further information. Shabby chic fabric rose brooch with Liz Freke of Hattie’s Hooray’s With Mother’s Day just around the corner, why not create a beautiful brooch for Mum, to dress up a plain scarf or top, all handmade by you! You could even create a whole bouquet of them – and of course why not create some for yourself too! You will need: Length of fabric measuring approx. 1 metre x 10 cms (the longer the fabric, the bigger the rose) Fabric strip measuring 2cms x 6cms Sewing needle Thread Fabric glue Pins Fabric scissors

6. Next, take your small piece of fabric and spread fabric glue on the reverse. Open the safety pin and place onto the reverse of your rose (pointy side up), then place the small fabric strip onto the pin to secure it to the fabric rose. 3. Continue to roll and twist the fabric around and as you go and secure the layers with pins on the reverse side.

7. Once dry, trim away any excess from the fabric strip on the reverse of the rose and there you have it – a beautifully crafted fabric rose brooch to jazz up any outfit or give as a beautiful gift for Mother’s Day.

Share your stories: email: news@emersonsgreenvoice.co.uk

Professional

1. Begin by taking your long strip of fabric and folding it in half, so that the raw edges are facing downwards. Roll the fabric around itself quite tightly to form the central ‘bud’ of the rose.

4. Once you are happy with the size of your rose, pin the remainder of the fabric strip to the rolled rose, so that it does not move and disrupt the layers you have created and, using a number of hand stitches, sew in and out of each layer to secure them to each other. This does not have to be neat as all stitching will be hidden.

Now continue to roll the fabric around itself, but twist it as you go – you may need a little bit of practice to perfect this technique, but the result will be that some parts of the rose have the neater folded edges showing and some have the raw edges which may start to fray – this all adds to the overall effect!

5. Taking the remainder of the fabric strip, trim so that, when folded over to the reverse side, it just covers your rose. Now spread a generous amount of fabric glue onto the reverse side of the rose and remainder of the fabric strip and glue both together, so that the remaining piece of fabric strip covers the underside and all hand stitching.

Tech academy tops the league table BRISTOL Technology and Engineering Academy is officially the best state school in the former Avon area for 16 to18-yearolds, according to the latest government statistics. The academy in Stoke Gifford, which takes in teenagers from across the area, saw 44 per cent of its students score AAB or higher in at least two of the so-called facilitating subjects in their A-levels last summer. BTE Academy has also achieved an outstanding Progress score in the latest tables from the Department for Education. BTE Academy achieved a score of 0.28 in the 16 to 18 age bracket – higher than any other state school across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath & North East Somerset. BTE Academy is one of the country’s few University Technical Colleges (UTCs), which focus on the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics. UTCs are sponsored by a university and by local employers who provide work experience and relevant projects for their 14-to-19-year-old intake. Principal Rhian Priest said: “This is only our third year of results and our first for

students who have spent four years with us, so I am incredibly proud. “Part of the reason for our success is down to the specialist nature of our academy. We only offer A-levels in maths and science subjects, along with diplomas in engineering, computing and applied science. These are the disciplines which are more than ever in demand from employers, and which will increasingly come to shape the UK’s skills-driven, technology-based economy in the years to come. “Last summer well over half of our sixth form students achieved either an A* or an A in maths or further maths and every student progressed on to their first-choice university or apprenticeship. “We also had a positive set of GCSE results with students making on average two grades’ progress per subject over the two-year period in which they are with us. ” Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy is holding an open evening from 6.30-8.30pm on Thursday March 15 and is accepting applications for Year 10 and Year 12 for September 2018.To book a place and meet staff, students and sponsor employers, call 0117 983 8080 or register on the website at www.bteacademy.co.uk

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

My part in Dom's success

Blog 49: An Olympic Medal WHEN I started January, I knew it was going to be a busy one, one way or the other but I had no idea that the story would end with a medal in the 2018 Winter Olympics. First some background: for five years I worked down at the track at Bath University with the Paralympic sprinters. As many people know, the GB skeleton and bobsled teams train down there as well, so our paths crossed. That is where I met the quiet, intelligent and unassuming man Dom Parsons. We struck up a friendship and I have worked to help keep him fit and firing on all cylinders. For many years we discussed how great it would be if I could go out and help him and his friends at an official world cup race. It is always so much easier and - dare I say it - more effective, when you are working at that level to be able work at the event and between races. So this year we agreed that I would come out to help in St Moritz, Switzerland, in mid-January … it helps that the skiing in St Moritz is superb and Swiss hospitality isn’t bad either. By going out and watching Dom, his partner Jackie (Team Australia) and

friend John (also Team Australia) race it gave me real insight into the stresses put on the body during skeleton and subsequently refine my treatment to help potentially increase the athlete’s performance on the track. The sport is incredibly technical and it is comparable to Formula One, not just in the sense that it is really, really fast but the technology in the sled is fundamentally important. Dom uses a sled made and designed by Kristan Bromley, former three times Olympic athlete and legend in the sport. Both Dom and Kristan share an education in high-level engineering, which I’m sure helps with the relationship. I believe that by Kristan adjusting the sled to the course and Dom, and then me adjusting Dom to the sled and trying to give him maximum launch from the start, we are aiming to get slider, sled and track as one for optimum speed and the lowest course times. This was the second to last race before the season ends at the Winter Olympics in Pyeong Chang. Up until now Dom had a season that was below his normal standards. Last season Dom medalled regularly on the circuit and was GB number 1. This year Dom had not yet medalled

and was frustrated with his performance. I am super happy to say that for the race in Switzerland everything came together and Dom got his first medal of the season, confirming his spot as GB number 1 and followed that up the week later with another medal, cementing his place in the GB Olympic Team. (Jackie got a best in two seasons position on the leader board and John got a track record push start, just saying). Just before Dom left for Korea, he popped into Cleve Chiropractic for one last treatment before the 2018 Winter Olympics for a ‘top up’ and humblingly gave me his race vest AND his medal from the race in St Moritz. For the first time in my life I was speechless. Nobody deserves somebody else’s medal and I can’t help but see how much that medal would mean to him, but Dom insisted that I had it and thanked me for helping get his season back on track. Even as I write this I find it hard to express just what that kindness means to me, but that is Dom, he is kind, modest and, beneath it all, fiercely determined. He has held off a bright career in engineering as he trains full time and works on his PhD. Enter Dom on the Olympic stage. After some impressive

warm-up runs in Pyeong Chang, Dom was well placed to put down a good time and after his two runs on the first day he was in fourth place. Even fourth place would be an exceptional result if he could keep it going for the final two runs the next day. However, Dom laid down his fastest run of the competition for his third run, putting him in third place and a genuine medal contender if he could just hang on. The fourth and final slide saw him make a tiny error that left him in second place with two of the best sliders in the world to go. You could see that he knew that it could have cost him as he sunk his head into his hands but down came the normally perfect and current world champion, Latvian Martins Dukurs, who made a slightly bigger mistake and eventually finished behind Dom! Then the ΩKorean came down to seal his huge lead with a Gold. So after four runs Dom finished third by 0.11 seconds with a Bronze in the 2018 winter Olympic Games.| Everybody who knows Dom ‘the wizard’ Parsons would agree that there is no better guy in the world that could win that medal. He has the best attitude in an athlete that I have ever seen and talent, pure talent. Thank you Dom for letting me go on a small part of that journey with you. All the best to you and Jackie, from all the team at Cleve Chiropractic and congratulations, you medalwinning Olympian!
