School in the TV spotlight MANGOTSFIELD School will be the focus of national attention this month, featuring in the final two episodes of the BBC 2 documentary School. The series, in which two other local secondaries, Castle and Marlwood, have already been in the spotlight, has prompted discussion about the pressures facing schools in 2018, not least financial. South Gloucestershire is the worst funded of 150 local authorities for education. Cameras were in the three schools for a year to make six one-hour episodes, looking at education "from bikeshed to boardroom". Inevitably, this means some less Will Roberts positive issues are highlighted but Will Roberts, chief executive of the trust that runs the schools, plus Downend School and three primaries, said he hoped viewers would appreciate the open and honest approach. The two episodes featuring Mangotsfield School are due to be screened on December 4 and December 11, both at 9pm. One has a focus on behaviour management and the other on disadvantaged students. A PETITION has been launched to tackle speeding on a main road in Lyde Green after average speeds were found to be 14mph over the limit. South Gloucestershire councillor Rachael Hunt is calling for well-researched and safety-audited improvements to be made to bring down speeds on Willowherb Road, which has a 20mph limit. Despite speed calming measures such as raised tables being installed on the road, a speed check next to School Square found drivers’ average speed to be 34mph – 70 per cent above the limit. Councillor Hunt, who represents the Emersons Green ward, and residents have also spoken to the companies based in the industrial units on nearby Vertex Park, in order to reduce issues with traffic using the road to access businesses. As Willowherb Road has not yet been adopted by the council, Councillor Hunt’s understanding is that the responsibility for the upgrades currently lies with the Gardiner-Theobold Consortium

Action plan to reduce suicides A STRATEGY to prevent suicides in South Glos has been launched. The council is asking for comments on a draft version of the policy, which sets out proposed key aims, intentions and areas of focus for the council and partner organisations between now and 2021. An audit of recorded deaths over the past three years found that there were 54 suicides in South Gloucestershire – an average of 18 each year. This represented just under eight deaths per 100,000 people every year – below both the regional and national average. The consultation is open until February 1 next year. Councillor Hunt’s petition seeks to prioritise improvements to Willowherb Road due to the proximity of the facilities off School Square, but she says that work to ease concerns on Jenner Boulevard will also continue. As the Voice went to print the petition was about halfway to its target of 500 signatures. To view and sign the petition, visit bit.ly/2Q47BQ7

‘Education needs more money’ DOZENS of primary school headteachers in South Gloucestershire have added their voices to the campaign for improved funding. They say they don’t have enough money to maintain high quality provision and point out that three quarters of schools have already had to cut teaching assistant posts. “These pressures are so great that we fear some of our schools may even be unable to meet statutory responsibilities, in relation to curriculum provision, health and safety or special educational needs,” they say in a letter urging the council to speak to Education Seretary Damian Hinds.

Why we let the TV cameras in to our schools MANGOTSFIELD School is braced for some backlash when it features in the final two episodes of the BBC2 documentary series School. But although its leaders admit that some parents and grandparents, as well as other people who have not had recent contact with the schools system might be shocked, they say they are pleased to be contributing to a much-needed debate about education in 2018. And they are pleased at the supportive response they have received to the first two of the six programmes, which featured some of the difficult decisions that had to be made at Marlwood and Castle schools in Thornbury, which are part of the Castle School Education Trust, along with Mangotsfield and Downend secondaries and three primaries. David Spence, head of Mangotsfield School, said: "We
had a fantastic Parent Forum meeting last week. It was clear that they had all watched the programmes. It's fair to say there was real solidarity with what schools are experiencing. They said it had made them appreciate what teachers and leaders do in a school, frequently in the face of very trying challenges. It has galvanised a real wish to do some serious fundraising, which will be great. They really understood now our motives for wanting to take part." Mr Spence admitted incidents would be screened that he would rather were not made public, but the three schools had agreed that the camera crew could have unprecedented access to all areas throughout the 2017-18 school year. He said: "It is not a cosy, warm PR piece - there is no spin. Some things work out well, some don't - but what the programmes

A STRICT behaviour management system known as Ready to Learn is in the spotlight in Programme 5, to be aired on December 4. One of the young people featured is 16-year-old Joe, who has ADHD and frequently breaks the rules. His place at Mangotsfield School is at risk in the year he is due to sit his GCSEs. The pre-publicity blurb from the show's makers, Label One Television, says: "In this programme, the demand for better classroom discipline for all meets a desire to accommodate a minority of students who struggle to behave. What is good for the many isn’t necessarily good for the few. The Heads and their teams are on a quest to instil personal responsibility while balancing the effects of medical conditions that don’t always allow children to choose how they behave. "With a close eye on the exclusion rate, the fate of those students struggling to adapt to the new regime and calm classrooms for the majority of students, the Trust must decide whether the new Ready To Learn system is here to stay." Spoiler alert: it is. However, David Spence, headteacher at Mangotsfield, says the system was refined several times during the filming and is working much better during this academic year. "The school is a very different place from a year ago," he said. "We have made changes to the staffing and the physical space, we have more parental involvement and we have reduced inconsistencies."

CSET leaders David Spence, Angie Browne, Will Roberts and James Pope do show is teachers working incredibly hard and people having to make hard decisions. "We have to make judgements every day. We have to prioritise one thing over another and our choices might be different if we had extra funding. Resources are so tight."
He said another thing the programmes showed was how quickly things moved on in a school. This was echoed by Will Roberts, chief executive of CSET, who said: "Mangotsfield School is in a much stronger position than it was a year ago. "I hope people will respect

n THE final episode of School, to be screened on December 11 and also featuring Mangotsfield School, will focus on funding for disadvantaged children. One reason that school budgets are squeezed is that demand is exceeding supply when it comes to paying to support children with special education needs and disabilities (SEND). South Gloucestershire is facing an SEND overspend of ÂŁ12 million and wants to recoup some of that from mainstream school budgets. After Bristol City Council lost a High Court case for failing to consult about a similar issue, SG Council is asking for views on three possible options. The third and final consultation meeting was due to take place on November 19, but many heads, governors and parents say none of the options is acceptable.

Helping children understand stories behind the poppies BLACKHORSE Primary School ensured that every single child, from the youngest to the oldest, understood the importance of the First World War with a themed ‘Armistice 100’ week. In the week leading up to the centenary, the children at
Blackhorse in Emersons Green learned about the war in lessons and from visits and visitors. Parents provided family stories which were used in lessons, including that of Herbert Horatio Millican, the great great uncle of one of the infant children,

with the school having access to both the letter he wrote from the battlefields of France just a week before he died aged just 19, and the ‘death penny’ sent by the King to his family after the war. The school community came together to remember their relatives, with the children making over 1000 hand-made poppies for the school’s ‘poppy wall’, which also included photos and accounts, researched by the children, of their family’s contribution to this conflict. To bring to life the day-today experience of the average Tommy, the school brought in a ‘historian in residence’ : Mr Evans, a teacher at St Stephen’s Junior, a parent at the school and a First World War enthusiast. In full WW1 uniform, he explained to them the life of a soldier on the Western Front, from various perspectives
including: the role of Commonwealth soldiers, the story of the first black officer in the British army and how women led medical advances in field hospitals. Every child in Years 1-6 took part in an excursion to develop their understanding further. The younger children went to war memorials in Page Park and Mangotsfield. Older pupils went to the Imperial War Museum in London. Head teacher Simon Botten explained the children’s depth of their knowledge: “A guide in the museum was trying to explain the causes of the war using a simple ‘helping your friends’ analogy, when an eight-year-old boy commented ‘Oh – you mean the assassination of Arch-Duke Ferdinand by the Serbian terrorist which led to the Balkan Crisis!’”.

It was organised by a group called Inspire formed by members of St James Church, who used their monthly meeting in Lyde Green Community Centre to reflect on the theme of Remembrance. At 11am several residents joined the group to observe the two minute silence in School Square and children laid a wreath made during the morning’s meeting. Poppy seeds to mark the Armistice were planted in a flower bed in front of the new centre.

n REMEMBRANCE n ST James Church was open all day on Saturday November 10 so that the community could see displays of work from local schools. Mangotsfield CofE Primary, Barley Close Primary, Stanbridge Primary, Blackhorse Primary, Lyde Green Primary and Mangotsfield Secondary School all contributed various poppy displays and some thought
provoking written work, poems and artwork. Outside the church was a magnificent display of clay poppies made by Year 4 pupils and children of military families from Mangotsfield Cof E Primary School. A moving screen presentation, put together by David Miles, was based on the research of David Blackmore, who has spent many years researching the stories behind the names that feature on the war memorial. There were also displays of memorabilia and craft activities for children to enjoy as well as refreshments provided by the church Social committee and a display by the Royal British Legion who also provided poppies for sale. During the afternoon The Golden Tones Ladies Choir enhanced the atmosphere by singing WW1 songs. The church had been decorated with an array of poppies that had been handcrafted by members of the congregation and their friends as well as parents from schools and
local residents. Several of the local shops, businesses and pubs had also decorated their windows in keeping with the theme and The Red Lion had also decorated its bar area with bunting. St James Church was packed on Sunday November 11 for a service of Remembrance. A small service also took place in the Red Lion pub for local
veterans. At 12.30pm many uniformed groups and personnel joined the Royal British Legion to parade with members of the community to the Mangotsfield war memorial for another opportunity to remember those that gave their lives during the First World War and in other conflicts.

Woman rescued from blaze A 92-YEAR-old woman was rescued from her home after a fire broke out in the kitchen. The pensioner was in a house in Queensholm Drive, Downend, when the fire broke out. Avon Fire and Rescue said the woman was brought out of her home before crews arrived. She and two men needed treatment for smoke inhalation from ambulance crews called to the semi-detached house. A fire service spokesman said the fire broke out accidentally and a 999 call was made at around 2.50pm on November 1. Crews from Kingswood and Temple fire stations were called to the scene and went into the house in breathing apparatus to put out the blaze, before clearing the smoke from the building. We expect the opening to create approximately 30 new jobs.” The spokesman said the future of the existing Iceland store in Fountain Square, Staple Hill, will not be affected by the opening of the new store in Emersons Green. A FOOTBALL club attacked by arsonists is urging continued support for a fundraising campaign set up to cover costs. The fire in October, at Blackhorse Community and Sports Pavilion in Mangotsfield, tore through a disused wooden water tower causing thousands of pounds’ damage. The facility is the headquarters of Mangotsfield Junior FC and AFC Mangotsfield, which has six teams from the juniors and five from the senior club based at the site in Dibden Lane. The club had hoped not to have to go through their insurers but due to the extent of the damage, they had no choice. It means the club has to pay a £1,000 excess fee which they hope to cover from an online fundraising page set up by chairman Colin Sutton. He wrote on the page: “This act of malicious criminal damage could potentially ruin the football environment of 100s of boys, girls, seniors and volunteers at the club. It is also used for vital community groups during the week.” The fire broke out around 4pm on Monday October 22. One of the team managers alerted club secretary Pete Brown who dashed down from his home in Staple Hill. "It only took me a few minutes but by the time I got there the place was well alight.
11
Fundraising appeal after arson at football pavilion There were about three fire engines there," he said. "I thought the whole place was going to go up as there were a lot of flames coming from it. I realised it was just the housing around the old water tower but there was still a massive danger of the whole flat roof, which is on top of all the changing rooms and showers, being burned down. It was only thanks to the fire brigade for being so quick that this didn't happen." At the time of going to print the crowdfunding web page had raised £833. Mr Brown said: "We've had a good response from people in the area and from club members but if we could just raise a bit more, it would be fantastic. People have been great which shows that people really care about the facility. I'd like to thank everyone for their support." Apart from some painting, all the damage has now been repaired, Mr Brown said. "The fire completely damaged all the felt
on the roof. The lights were fused and needed to be rewired and some light fittings had to be replaced. "The roof and the electrics have now been sorted so we now need a lick of paint to try to get rid of the smell of smoke which is still lingering around. "We have volunteers ready to do the work, we're just waiting for the paint to arrive and for a rain-free day or weekend to carry out the work." Despite the damage, no matches had to be postponed. A fundraising event, however, was cancelled because of the smell but is expected to be rescheduled. Police are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward. Call the police on 101, quoting reference 5218 236 525, if you can help. If you would like to donate to the football club's online appeal, please visit bit. ly/2ScGsc3

‘There’s a real sense of community in Lyde Green’ LYDE Green has been praised by the Royal Horticultural Society for the community’s commitment to its public spaces. Lyde Green Open Space Group entered the development for the RHS’s It’s Your Neighbourhood Scheme for the first time and was delighted to be rated at level 3 advancing. The scheme has five levels and the group had expected to receive a low score or to be told it was not yet ready to be judged. But the assessor was very impressed after seeing the newly planted School Square planters, Lyde Green Common and Lyde Green Park and hearing about events such at the tadpole rescue event and the annual Big Spring Clean. The RHS praised the group’s links with the primary school, South Gloucestershire Council, developers and housing associations, and said: “The enthusiastic volunteer group has made encouraging progress in bringing residents together … “There’s a real sense of community in Lyde Green, which is unusual in such a new residential development. The group should be proud of what it has achieved so far in a relatively short time.” Lyde Green Open Space Group said: “ Thank you so much to all the volunteers, donors, and supporters who helped us to achieve this!”

Ladies choir wants to welcome new members
A LADIES choir in Emersons Green is looking for new members to join them when they start their new term in January. Sounds Delightful Choir is run by Rachael Hunt and the group recently celebrated its fifth birthday. The choir meets on Tuesdays at Emersons Green Village Hall between 8pm and 9.30pm and there is also a sister group that meets on Mondays at the Ridgewood Community Centre in Yate, between 7pm and 8.30pm. Each session costs £5.50 and the group sings a range of pop, musicals and folk songs. Rachael said: “I started
the choirs as I love the wellbeing singing brings, releasing serotonin in the brain, and the way it brings people together. “Often people arrive tired, with shoulders hunched, after being at work or busy with their families, and by the time they leave they have a spring in their step with a weight lifted! It's a wonderful community.”

A bid for the school, which would cost up to £20 million to build and teach up to 870 children, has been submitted to the Department for Education with the intention of opening in September 2021. It would have two classes in each year for primary school children, with a maximum of 420 children aged between four and 11. There would be three forms in each of the five secondary years, accommodating up to 450 children aged 11 to 16. Schools created under the Government’s free school programme are non-profit making, independent and statefunded. Plans for the new school on a six hectare (14.8 acre) site in
Lyde Green have been submitted by SGS Academy Trust, which is sponsored by South Gloucestershire and Stroud College. The new school would be called SGS Parkfield after the former colliery in the area. Half of the funds to build it would be provided by South Gloucestershire Council, which has secured funding under planning deals with developers building in Lyde Green. SGS Academy Trust conducted an online consultation before submitting its bid. The consultation opened on October 24, after the last edition of the Voice went to press, and closed after 12 days, on November 4. There were 51 responses: 42 in support of the proposal, six against and three others. The bid was submitted to the Department for Education on
November 5. A spokesman for SGS Academy Trust said: “The local authority asked for academy trusts to consider putting in an application for funding to add to the money already secured via this application. SGS Academy Trust were happy to work with the LA to submit the application. “We shall hear in the early new year if this application is to be progressed to the next stage of the process. This would involve the academy trust building up a more detailed business case and, amongst other statutory actions, undertake a wider consultation process over a longer period of time.” South Gloucestershire Council leader Toby Savage said: “A new secondary school at Emersons Green has been a longrunning Conservative campaign and was reaffirmed again at our
February budget meeting. “SGS Academy Trust has submitted a bid to the DfE to establish this new all-through school at Lyde Green. We have given our support to the bid confirming the need for the new school and the DfE will assess the application.” Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore said: “It has been a long-held community aspiration to build a new secondary school to serve the growing Emersons Green and Lyde Green community. “This summer I held a meeting with the Secretary of State for Education Damian Hinds to press the case for this new school investment and am delighted to see bids being submitted to government for consideration.” To find out more about the plans visit: academytrust.sgscol. ac.uk/parkfield/

n NEWS ONE in every six houses bought last year in South Gloucestershire were purchased as second homes or properties to rent out, figures show. HM Revenue and Customs data shows second home buyers – including property investors and landlords buying houses to rent out – were undeterred by new taxes on extra properties. A second home is defined by HMRC as a property that is bought by a buyer who already has a primary residence. Last year 17 per cent of the properties sold in South Gloucestershire were classified as second homes. Around 950 were bought in the financial year 2017-18, with a combined value of £259 million. That’s despite an extra 3 per cent stamp duty charge on additional properties, introduced in April 2016 as part of a government effort to deter buy-to-let landlords, property investors and second home
One in six houses sold as second homes or rentals owners. In England, almost one in four properties bought last year were classified as second homes. Around 232,000 second homes were bought, with an estimated value of more than £70 billion. The number bought last year in South Gloucestershire has increased by 14 per cent since 2016-17, when around 830 second homes were purchased. The National Housing Federation, which represents housing associations, said it was concerned about the impact that buying extra properties has on local communities. Policy leader Will Jeffwitz said: “In any community, if
more homes are bought up as second homes then there are fewer available for residents – and the houses left are more unaffordable. “Our solution is that there should be a renewed focus on building more affordable housing, which reduces the impact of a high ownership of second homes.” Lawrence Bowles, research analyst at estate agent Savills, said that first-time buyers are still at a “fundamental disadvantage”, despite the new tax. He said: “First time buyers will typically be buying with a mortgage, and buy-to-let landlords will often have the
money in their account, ready to go. “Sellers prefer that over mortgages because of the certainty – there’s always a risk associated with a mortgage.” In total, around £33 million was collected from stamp duty in South Gloucestershire last year. HMRC figures say that duty on additional dwellings made up 35 per cent of that amount. The Treasury said that the Government’s priority is to “support first time buyers”. A Treasury spokesperson said: “We want to support the dream of home ownership for the next generation.”

n NEWS FROM THE WI’s BEECHMERE BELLES WI THE year 2018 seems to have flown by, and Beechmere Belles have had a full, interesting and fun year. New friends have been made, new skills have been learnt and many laughs have been had. From samosa folding to needle felting and sugar paste roses to pottery painting, we have tried it all. Our November meeting, the last one of the year as we take our break at Christmas, was an evening of Christmas crafts. We had three crafts on offer: bauble wreath making, Christmas pudding felting to hang on the tree and Christmas card making, all set to Christmas music. Well, it’s never too early to bring Slade into our lives! The raffle was a success, with the theme being something Christmassy. Tea and cake were also consumed, which I think is actually mandatory for a WI. Although we do not have a
meeting in December, we are getting together for a Christmas meal in a local eatery to celebrate the festive season. Beechmere Belles will also have a stall at the Emersons Green Village Hall Christmas Fayre on December 1: if you see us, come and say hello. It is difficult to pinpoint the best meeting or the best outing, as there has been so much going on. We had a speaker from the fire brigade, who gave us plenty to think about when it comes to safety in our homes: no more do I put the washing machine or dishwasher on before I leave the house or go to bed. The visit from the breast lady was interesting and informative, and something we should all beware of. Rapeseed oil tasting – what is this all about, I thought to myself? Well, I wouldn’t have missed that meeting: we learnt how this farmer’s wife started a new venture using their rapeseed crop, earning herself a visit from the Prince of Wales as their farm is on Duchy land. We started with the basic

rapeseed oil and moved through the different flavours, including, amongst others, rapeseed with lemon and rapeseed with garlic, which makes the best garlic mushrooms. For me, the highlight was definitely the meeting with the Queen’s body guard: it topped off a brilliant year that also included two royal weddings. Beechmere Belles’ committee have worked hard planning our 2019 meetings and outings, and there is something for everybody to look forward to. Please feel free to pop in and join in the fun. We meet every fourth Thursday evening at 7.30pm, in Emersons Green Village Hall.
SHORTWOOD VILLAGE WI Our October meeting was hosted by our vice president, who welcomed our speaker for the evening. Tim Lewis and his wife, a lovely couple, gave us an interesting and humorous talk about “Around the World in 80 days”. They stayed for the usual cuppa and biscuit and an after-talk chit chat. This was followed by our business for the forthcoming month and future events. Our December meeting is our Xmas party, where we are lucky to have the use of a room in the Bridge Inn in the village. As usual, we will have party games, secret Santa and an American supper, and good fun will be had by all! Every year, we have a carol singing evening through the village, come rain or shine, which this year is on December 18, meeting at The Bridge Inn. Thanks to the generosity of the village
residents and customers in the Bridge Inn, we raise a good sum for charity. This year the nominated charity is Dual Purpose Dogs, which trains dogs to help people with sight loss and significant hearing loss. The village carol service is in Shortwood Chapel on December 23 at 6pm. We would like to wish everyone a happy Christmas and prosperous New Year in 2019. Our January meeting is on January 10 and we would love to see new members. We meet on the second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm in the vestry behind the chapel, in the middle of the Main Road, Shortwood. For further information, can contact Catherine by email at charles@ccce.demon.co.uk. LYNNE MILLER
MANGOTSFIELD WI OUR November meeting was enjoyable and entertaining. It was fabulous to welcome Philomena, who demonstrated exercise for all abilities. I particularly found the armchair aerobics useful. Philomena was clearly very knowledgeable in her profession and we highly recommend her to our WI sisters. Christmas is just around the corner – “Oh no it’s not!” We have a number of festive activities planned. Out meeting on December 17 will be a singalong with Naomi. Dancing is not obligatory but Naomi always gets us up enjoying the evening.

New flat fare for bus users CHANGES to bus services have been introduced, with cuts to one route, a new flat fare introduced and further price rises for any passengers who pay when they board. Operator First has announced that the 7, which links Staple Hill and Mangotsfield to the city centre via Lawrence Hill and Soundwell, will no longer call at Mangotsfield in the early morning or evening. The service includes a loop between Broad Street and the Lamb in Mangotsfield, via Hill House Road, Salisbury Road, Northcote Road, Mangotsfield Road and Charnhill Drive. But before 9am and after 5.30pm the loop will be missed out. First cited low customer demand for the changes to the timetable. The bus operator has also introduced a new flat fare of £2 for all single journeys within the Bristol Inner Zone, which extends approximately six miles from the city centre. Instead of £1.50 for trips under three miles and £2.50 for journeys of more than three miles, single fares in the zone,
including all single metrobus trips, will now cost £2 for people buying at least five tickets on the company’s mTicket app or Travelwest smartcard. Anyone buying one single ticket at a time on the app will be charged a 7p booking fee on top of the £2 fare. The flat fare for people paying on the bus is now £2.50 instead of £2 and £3 before. First’s day, night, week, month and year mTicket prices are being frozen for the next year but people buying adult day, night and week tickets on
board will see them rise to £5, £3.50 and £20 respectively, as the company tries to make more people switch to its mobile app. The ‘3 stop hop’ ticket will increase by 20p to £1.20. Announcing the changes, First said: “The flat fare will make bus travel in Bristol simpler and equitable for all, with customers being able to travel in the confidence that their Bristol Zone journey will be the same price, regardless of distance.”

n PETER'S VISION IT’S almost here, just a few more sleeps then shebang… presents, food and drink galore. Well for some anyhow! Whilst in many ways I’m from a traditional family, and we celebrate Christmas the way we have for years; Church in the morning, a hearty lunch and then presents in the afternoon. A brisk walk or a nap then follows we’re split about 50:50 on this one! This year’s different. I’m being challenged to change the way I think about our relatively short time on earth. No doubt we all know that if we choose we can impact both positively and negatively on those nearby and not so nearby. Whether a kind word, helping hand or something more, every time we do a random act of kindness (as our Vicar calls them) it’s a chance to make a positive impact in someone else's life - a chance to show to others the love that God’s shown to each of us. My plan - for each of us to be able to make a positive impact on the vision of other people in Bristol, Britain and beyond. It’s quite simple really, and a

OUR calendar has been jammed full of loads of exciting events, activities, planning and behind the scenes action. During October we held our Macmillan Afternoon Tea in support of Macmillan Cancer Support – a huge thank you to everyone who came along and supported us in our fundraising efforts. I GO TO Mike Walker’s shop (Pucklechurch news/the post office), which is located in Pucklechurch three times a week to buy a newspaper/magazine. I use a wheelchair as do two or three other people in the village. I have spoken to a few other local residents who agree that the main road that passes between the Fleur de Lis and Mike’s shop desperately needs a visible speed deterrent and a zebra crossing. Some vehicles, mainly cars and vans, drive along the road at 50-60 miles per hour. The drivers vary from irresponsible young men to women driving large 4x4 vehicles. Unless something is done, I believer it is only a matter of time before at best there is an accident or at worst a fatality. Bruce Waddell Pucklechurch

n NEWS FROM OUR MP
W Chris Skidmore writes for
Emersons Green Voice
ITH the Christmas period fast approaching, this is the perfect time to reflect on the year so far. This year I was delighted to be appointed Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party for Policy and Chair of the newly constituted Conservative Policy Commission by the Prime Minister, working to develop Conservative Party policies that are fit for the future and that can improve the lives of people across our country. As part of the Policy Commission, five Taskforces have been established: Energising our economy, Transforming our public services, Building a fairer society, Sustaining our democracy, and Shaping a Global Britain. This will be an opportunity to trial ideas, but also to allow for a consultative period with the wider public. The Commission’s task forces will undertake the most extensive exercise of policy renewal ever conducted by a party in government. I am proud of the work of the Conservative Policy Commission, which is engaging across the country, listening to party members, communities and businesses, and I hope that this endeavour will help to shape the future thinking of the Conservative party as we approach the start of a new decade, and indeed a decade in government. After seven years in government, our narrative must first be founded on the secure economic base that we have successfully delivered. Employment is at a record high and we have ensured that the lowest earners in
society are better paid, and millions have been taken out of tax altogether. It is a record of achievement unparalleled across Western democracies and should be at the core of the Conservative Party’s vision. The Conservatives must now more than ever be the party of hope, setting out our own positive vision of the future, together with policies that will resonate with the electorate. This will require careful and detailed work which must begin now, focusing not only on the future of taxation, public services and our infrastructure, but on how we preserve and strengthen what we consider most precious in society: communities and institutions that matter. As party vice chairman responsible for policy, I want to ensure that, as Conservatives, we draw on innovative ideas being put forward by a new generation of Tory MPs and members, ensuring that we listen carefully and engage across the country, not simply across Westminster. These are not only opportunities that need to be seized, they are the seeds of hope for a new political narrative, making a renewed case for what the Conservative Party stands for in government. I am very grateful for all the support I have received from local residents this past year, and I have loved, as always, meeting with and getting to know the many people who make up my constituency. I wish you and your families a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Rainbows rewarded for cracking fundraising
A GROUP of Rainbows had the opportunity to get up close to Emersons Green’s own Gromit Unleashed 2 sculpture after they raised funds for the Grand Appeal. The 6th Kingswood (Emersons Green) Rainbows unit meet at Emersons Green Village Hall on Thursday evenings. The 18 girls, aged between five and seven, have recently been working towards a special ‘Gromit Unleashed 2’ Challenge Badge, which has been developed in partnership between the Grand Appeal, Aardman Animations and Girlguiding. Their challenges included organising a space-themed evening, producing Banksy-style artwork, having a go at shaving foam printing, making a short animated film using toys and making cheesy snacks. The group also held a charity bake sale in October, raising £176 for the charity, which supports Bristol Children’s
Hospital. As well as selling home-baked cakes and hot drinks, the girls also wore ‘wrong trousers’ during the evening and used Smartie tubes full of coins to make a picture of Wallace and Gromit villain Feathers McGraw. And after seeing the bake sale advertised, Emersons
Green resident Alan Griffiths who bought one of the Gromit Unleashed 2 sculptures at auction invited the girls to visit. The rainbows handed over the money raised for the Grand Appeal to Sister Fern Jameson from Bristol Children’s Hospital’s Lighthouse ward, in
front of the sculpture, Gnome Sweet Gnome, on November 15. Unit leader Lindsey Naldrett aid: “The Rainbows had a wonderful time baking and selling their cakes in support of the Grand Appeal. It was the culmination of the term’s work towards the Gromit Unleashed 2 Challenge badge, written by South West Guiding and Scouting, and was great fun to do. “The Rainbows wear their super, colourful badges with pride. Our fantastic total raised is due to our amazingly supportive families; I can’t thank them enough. Not forgetting, of course, the enthusiasm and commitment from our fabulous leaders.” The 6th Kingswood Rainbows meet on Thursdays from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Emma-Jay Jones, who has lived in the estate with her two young children for two and a half years, first became aware of the Miss British Beauty Curve pageant last year. The pageant aims to showcase the diversity of women across Great Britain, and is specifically for women who are UK dress size 14 and above. Emma-Jay was awarded the title of Mrs England Curve 2018 earlier this year. Next, Emma-Jay set her sights on the Miss International Beauty Curve finals, which also took place in Kent on October 20. During the event she took part in a traditional wear round, where she wore a St Georgethemed outfit specially made by a friend, a swimwear round and an evening wear round. The event also raised funds for a charity called SANE, which supports people affected by mental health
issues and their families. After taking part in the three rounds, Emma-Jay was ranked in third place, as second runner up, behind Mrs UK Curve in second place and Mrs Republic of Ireland Curve in first place. She said: “The national wear round was a bit difficulth. I decided to go as St George but in the form of a woman, as I wanted
to empower women and show that women are strong too! “My friend Jane made my outfit for me in her spare time, and I wore a huge red cloak, a red and white tunic, Roman style boots and a headpiece. “Taking part in Miss Beauty Curve has been life-changing. I still can’t quite believe it. “My main motivation is to
be a good role model for my two children, who keep saying they want to help people when they are older, which is lovely. “The support that I’ve had from everyone has been amazing, and I would like to say thank you again to my sponsors Just For You Bridal, Ludicrous Lengths Salon and the Showgirl Academy, my partner Victoria and my friend Jane – I couldn’t have got this far without them.” Next Emma-Jay has the Mrs England Curve heats on December 16 to see if she can retain the title for 2019 campaign, and she also wants to continue campaigning about body image by holding her own local empowerment and body positivity event. Emma-Jay is looking for a venue for her event and for local businesses and volunteers with events experience to get involved. n CRAFT COLUMN Mini Christmas Stocking
n NEWS Tree festival ST THOMAS a Becket church in Pucklechurch is holding its first Christmas Tree Festival this month. It starts on Saturday December 1 and at least 20 trees decorated by local groups will be on display. The event is open 10am- 4pm on the first day from 2-4pm December 2-7 and 10-4 on Saturday Dec 8.
With Liz Freke of Hattie’s Hooray’s With Christmas around the corner, why not make this cute Christmas stocking to either fill with treats or to hang in the Christmas tree - or you could even create 25 of them and use them as an advent calendar! From Hattie’s Hooray’s we hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year....see you in 2019! You will need: Christmas fabric for the stocking Lining fabric or plain polycotton in a contrasting colour Fur trim Fabric scissors Pencil/chalk Pins Sewing machine Needle 10cms of ribbon Embellishments such as buttons Fabric glue
1. Begin by drawing a template on a piece of card - you could draw around a sock and then draw a smaller stocking shape inside. Cut out. Draw around your stocking shape into your Christmas fabric, then turn the template over and draw around the stocking shape again to make a reverse shape. Cut out and repeat with the lining fabric.
3. Machine stitch around the stocking shapes (leaving the top edges open). Now turn the Christmas fabric right sides out. 7. You are now ready to embellish your stocking and fill with sweets and treats!
4. With the lining piece still ‘inside out’ put the lining piece inside the Christmas fabric and line up both seams. Now turn the Christmas fabric edges inwards (as if you are creating a seam). At the same time, fold the top of the lining outwards to meet the fold of the Christmas fabric and pin together. Sew around the top of the stocking, which will sew together the Christmas and lining fabrics as you go.
5. Take your fur trim and cut a piece in length that will fit around the top of your stocking, allowing for a 1cm seam allowance at each end. The length of the fur trim can be as long as you like! Pin the fur trim together right sides together and sew the ends together.

2. Pin the Christmas fabrics together (right sides facing each other) leaving the top of the stocking open. Repeat for the lining pieces.
6. Turn right side out and using fabric glue, stick the fur trim around the top of the stocking. Now take your oddment of ribbon, fold in half and hand stitch the ends inside the stocking into the seam.

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE
Winter injuries and Gandalf
S
O the nights are drawing in, the summer has well and truly left us as the winter season is beginning. Patients have been regularly coming in with all sorts of injuries from winter sports like rugby and football. They are always varied, from back and neck injuries to ankles and knees. Our chiropractors, physios and sports therapists have been rushed off their feet patching up players and athletes so they get back out there, only to come back the next week with a new one for us! I’m not complaining, exercise is great and all sports have an inherent risk. Even when the Wii Fit first came out we saw plenty of injuries sustained in the front room from vigorous virtual tennis or crazy bowling techniques that took out the lamp shade and dislocated their shoulder at the same time. For some unknown reason the weather also makes people feel
their joint pains more. Nobody knows why, but we see it every year. Maybe it’s a lack of vitamin D, that seems to be the answer for everything these days. I take it in the winter just in case! This month saw the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) have its annual conference. I had the great idea that we should have an awards ceremony for all chiropractors, clinics reception teams etc. The idea was well received and then inevitably I was asked to get on and organise it, as if I’m not busy enough. But then, as always, I start to think about it and I actually enjoy organising these things despite my grumblings. I always think, ‘If I was going to do that, I would do it this way’, so that’s what I did and why I hired an actor who could do an amazing Gandalf from Lord of the Rings impression to do the introduction to the audience. You should have seen the stunned faces. People

Molly was definitely the biggest day dreamer of them all. Ah yes, I could well believe it. I often catch her day dreaming at home and to be fair it does run in the family. Both my dad and I have been famous day dreamers in our time. I’m not worried as it just seems like she is an excellent thinker, last time I caught her staring out of the window, she turned to me and asked ‘It’s amazing…I just don’t understand it, it just stays there all the time. How does the moon not fall down out of the sky’? I didn’t think she was ready for the chat about orbits, gravity and tidal pull so I just told her it was magic and if she was a good girl then Father Christmas might take her there one day…

are still asking me how I managed to get Iain McKellan to do the recording. A stuffy old chiropractic conference has never been so perplexed. Needless to say I thought it was hilarious. After the BCA President was introduced as the half elf princess of Eriador and me as her slave, we got on with our ‘Ant and Dec’ performance. It went really well as we went all out ‘Oscars style’ with the shiny awards, videos and music. We even an Olympic Athlete called Marilyn Okoro handing out the awards in front of the giant Ice sculpture I had procured. There were speeches, tears and standing ovations. Now that’s how you should do it I thought! I can’t wait for next year…maybe I could hire Darth Vader? It was a big month this month for the Molly and the Mollyettes as we had our first ever parents evening. It’s a strange feeling going into a parents evening as a parent for the first time. For the whole time in secondary school when my mum and dad went for me, I used to sit at home waiting for them to come back with the inevitable lecture about how I didn’t concentrate enough and talked too much in class. So I was pleasantly surprised when I was told that Molly was very good at writing the letter ‘k’ which is apparently hard when you are still only 4. I was just feeling confident that my child could well be a genius and I should start thinking about sending her to a special school for the gifted when reality struck home as the lovely Mrs R, then told us that she had a class full of day dreamers but

Lesley’s passion for tennis is rewarded A VOLUNTEER’S enthusiasm, passion and effort supporting tennis in the Downend area has been recognised with an award. Lesley St Leger, of Downend and Frenchay Tennis Club, has been named the Volunteer of the Year by Avon Tennis – one of a number of local heroes honoured as part of the British Tennis Awards. The award is presented to a volunteer who has made a significant impact, helping more people to get involved with the sport as players, coaches or supporters, and has shown excellent teamwork skills. Lesley was recognised for her work in all areas of the game, from leading her club’s She Rallies initiative to involve more women and girls in the sport to recycling old balls which can no longer be used. Her work on the She Rallies project saw almost 100 more people who had never been to the club before try playing tennis there. She has also promoted the sport as an activity for over-65s and arranges mixed social matches, running a group on social messaging service
WhatsApp to keep people up to date with activities, as well as playing herself and supporting other members at matches. An Avon Tennis spokesperson said: “Lesley is an example of how willingness, practice, effort and determination absolutely pays off. She visibly displays and shows her enjoyment of the sport that is inspirational for others, and cascades across the members she involves and plays with. “Lesley’s strong interpersonal skills enable her to inspire anyone of any ability to ‘have a go’.” Lesley said: "Tennis is good for you emotionally, mentally and physically. It gives people a complete break from life's stresses. “I really enjoy it, and it’s sociable, too. Any age can play and it's great for retired people, that's why I do it. I really want to help and encourage others, because I've benefited so much." Avon Tennis county secretary Clive Sampson said: “It is heartening to award those who put so much effort behind offering great tennis opportunities for all in Avon.”

Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm feels the heat THE exceptionally hot and dry summer this year hit Christmas tree growers at Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm particularly hard, causing thousands of baby trees to die during the relentless drought and scorching weather. “We saved what we could,” said Simon Maughan, “But the ground was utterly parched and we have to use water responsibly.” The heat was felt right across Europe, and
industry experts believe that almost an entire season’s crop of Christmas trees has been lost, with Denmark, Germany and Poland being the areas hit the worst. A systematic replanting programme has already begun (see picture), but as Simon admits, “It won’t cover all our losses – we’ll just have to write 2018 off as a bad year.” “Customers mustn’t worry about tree shortages, however,” says Simon. “It takes at least 6 years for a Christmas tree to grow to the appropriate height, so the affects of this heatwave will not be felt before 2023.” A silver lining, perhaps, is that because of the heat, many Christmas trees this year are showing first-class foliage. Another Europe-wide phenomenon this year is the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May. “We can no longer hold people’s information without their consent, which means that this year there will be no Christmas cards sent out to our customers. Rest assured we’ll be back in 2019 – all you have to do is enter our free Christmas Raffle, in which three £100 shopping vouchers are up for grabs.” With the drought behind them, hundreds of Christmas Trees now await harvest at Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm. Nordman Firs continue to be their biggest seller, with
the Norwegian Spruces a close second. “The benefit of a freshly cut tree is that it will last much longer once you bring it into the house. The latest research still tells us that it is worth watering a cut tree after it has been felled, particularly for Norwegian Spruce, because it keeps the foliage glossier for much longer.” Eager customers wanting to reserve their trees for later cutting are welcome at the Christmas Tree Farm from late November onwards. Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm is open until Christmas Eve, 9am-5pm every day. “Choose and Cut” runs for as long as stocks last. Prices start from just £20. www.frenchaychristmastreefarm.co.uk
