John Holod wants to put you in driver’s seat

By Jo Schaper oes the thought of traveling in an RV have you spooked? Do you have sticker shock, and wonder if this method of seeing the country is beyond your means? John Holod, of RV Adventure Videos, Inc., is here to relieve your fears, and encourage you to embark on one of the greatest free-wheeling adventures you can take. He will be speaking on the hour, most hours of the St. Louis RV Vacation & Travel Show, telling tales of his last 22 years, most of it spent on the road, both in North America and abroad, and giving helpful tips and advice based on his experience. Holod, from Detroit, started traveling on a Harley Davidson motorbike in 1973 with a trip on the then mostly dirt Videographer John Holod Alaska Highway. “It’s all paved now,” he said, “but the adventure of getting up close with the landscape hasn’t changed.” A similar trip to Baja California and he was hooked. After getting degrees in cinematography, journalism and photography at Wayne State University, Holod hit the road, shooting 16mm film in such places as Czech/Slovakia and Cuba, then presenting his work to travel clubs and other performing arts and civic venues. The last 12 years have been in various recreational vehicles, he said. “Once you fly, rent a car, get a hotel and eat in restaurants it gets really expensive. “Sure, there is the investment, but you can travel much more cheaply in an RV. “The bed is the same every night, and you can eat healthier. And you meet

Instead of doing eight locks and locking yourself in a hotel, you set up in an RV park and open the doors, put out a chair, and people come over. Or you go over to them. “You make your own schedule,” said Holod. “If you want to nap, you nap. If you want to stay longer someplace, it’s easy to do. I’ve found most people on the road are friendly, and eager to share.” Holod says he’s done about 600,000 miles on the road. “I just did Route 66 last fall, in two months for my video series. You get a better feel for the place, and for the people of a region.” He’s traveled in everything from a luxury motorhome to a pop-up camper. “I just lately have been traveling in a Class C RV with a diesel Mercedes engine. It’s full-size, and gets 15-20 miles to the gallon. That’s just amazing considering what a RV used to get.” Because of his work, Holod’s RV is his home, his office and his production studio. “I started out with 16mm in 1990. Then in 2000, I switched to video, and five years ago I went to high-def video. The technology just keeps getting cheaper and better.” “If people are interested in RVing, Holod advises they rent several types before buying. “You’ve got to find out what works for you. And if you come to the show, don’t be shy. Come up and ask questions. If you’ve got a plan, I’ll look it over for you.” Most of all, he said, if you want to try it, don’t wait. “I go back to some shows year after year, and the same people come by and say, “next year.” Well,

Taking the dog? Mayfield tells how to make RV life pleasant for you and pet
By Jo Schaper Do you want to travel, but stay home instead because you’re not quite sure what to do with your beloved dog? A recreational vehicle vehicle is the ideal home away from home for your canine companion, says Shannon Mayfield, lead trainer of No Leash Needed, a dog training, dog day care, and kennel in West St. Louis County. This will be the third year Mayfield brings her “Traveling with Your Dog” seminars to the St. Louis RV Show. Mayfield is Shannon Mayfield co-owner and chief dog trainer of the dog behavioral center. Six years ago, Mayfield ran a dental laboratory. She acquired a “bad dog” – one that needed to be socialized and more than a normal amount of work to turn into a good pet. “I wasn’t excited about my job. I had to learn a lot about dog behavior, and why they do what the do to deal with mine,” she said. “It turned into a new career.” Mayfield emphasizes creature comfort, safety, and familiarity for your pet to make sure you have a good travel experience. Mayfield will discuss such topics as having proper ID for your dog; taking copies of veterinary records, and making sure your destinations are pet-friendly ahead of time.
