Lady BaBa or The Glam Hag statement
A
nywhere in a country, life in the big city and life in rural areas are not as different as one might think. Both are subjected to approximately the same occupations which require, roughly, the same clothing. Ergo, we can talk about a uniform for every given trade. And if one’s trade is being an old hag, nothing can take us by surprise: a headkerchief firmly knotted under the chin, a sheepskin over a jersey over another jersey over a sarafan, loose socks underneath training trousers, and woolen socks over all of these; of course, the color palette consists of messy grays and mismatched prints. Lady BaBa is a project that rebuilds this “hag uniform” from the ground up. The shape and scope of it remain unchanged,
but the outfits become statements by inserting just the right amount of glamour, which is lacking when washing up the floor (in this scenario with a golden brush), serving lunch (in solid gold dishes) and all the other normal doings that were captured during this project. The authenticity is helped by the traditional setting in which the characters do their normal routines. Thus, in spite of their conspicuity, they perfectly blend in with their surroundings. The outfits were carefully put together in order for them to be equivocal - vintage pieces, that can very easily be snatched out of grandma’s closet, alongside designer creations especially conceived to make the “glam” component a whole.
