Chosen Garment and Synopsis

My Chosen Garment

For my showcase module I want to create a piece that reflects my personality and interests through the research and development and finally the final piece. When looking though the set garments I noted down my initial ideas for each garment and what these ideas mean to me on a more personal level. Therefore, after gathering my initial thoughts the stab proof vest and the band jacket then look my interest and sprouted more ideas in regard to research and final outcome possibilities. In recent years I have took interest in crime that takes place within our society which include knife crime, terrorism and violent protests. Not only have I taken more interest in real life crime but also police dramas that investigate murders and acts of violent crime. Therefore, the stab vest would allow me to use my interest in crime through my research and create a more meaningful connection with my final piece. The second garment that took my interest was the band jacket. My initial ideas led me to create a mood board based on the ideas of the USA, toys and royalty. Ever since I visited Orlando Florida in 2014, I have had an interest in the American Culture compared to English Culture. Their way of life, laws, cuisine and their famous Disney World attractions creates a very exaggerated reality to British Life in which I continue to explore. Furthermore, the idea of royalty that I also linked to the garment is a very stereotypically British which juxtaposes the ideas of America. This idea of looking at British Royalty and American Disney stems a different idea for themes of American compared to British Culture, What Royalty is really like and the ideas of Children’s Toys. Therefore, I am going to base my showcase on the band jacket.

After exploring my initial ideas, I want to proceed with the theme of royalty through princesses. I will explore how royalty is portrayed through fiction and non-fiction comparing Disney and The British Royal Family to create an end product that links with my ideas of being a Prince/Princess. Throughout my research I will explore what it means to be part of the Royal Family but also what it means to be a princess in the British Royal Family, by looking at the interview from Princess Diana and more recently Meghan Markle. I will then compare it to the way Disney portrays Princesses in their films. I will then look at modern twists of the Disney characters from live action films created by Disney but also modern-day twists of the traditional fairy-tale stories. I will then explore fashion designers that use the style of princess dresses for red carpets. These elements of research will allow me to create an idea for a final piece on what makes a princess.
