Society relies strongly on the physical, emotional and especially mental well-being of its citizens. In 2011 studies conducted by the ONS showed that 1 400 suicides had been commited by people from the age of 15 to 34 in England which roughly translates to four suicides a day. In 2013 mental health was proven to be the third most common social problems in London. Promoting the growth of communal activities is seen as a potential cure and central to the idea of the social condenser is the premise that architecture has the ability to influence social behavior. Inspired by the “Peckham Experiment conducted in 1950 it (add definition of what it represents), my program focuses on the health of people in the areas around Peckham. Peckham is an important shopping destination for thousands of Londoners. The borough offers many places for beauty treatments as well as being host to many markets offering fresh produce. My selected building, the Liberal Club is located within five minutes reach from the rail station, allowing it to be easily accessible by locals and by people commuting from other areas of London. My intervention comprises the division of the Liberal Club into two major areas of activity that intersect and meet in the center, acting as a bridge between both activities.

District of Central London and close to Charing Cross, it forms one of the oldest parts of London and fronts the River Thames to the north. As an inner district of London, Southwark experienced rapid depopulation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is now at an advanced stage of regeneration and is the location of the City Hall offices of the Greater London Authority. Declining wharfage trade, light industry and factories have given way to

residential growth, shops, restaurants, galleries, bars, office develop-

ments housing international headquarters of accountancy, and legal and professional services consultances. The Borough is generally an area of mixed development, with council estates, major office developments, social housing and high value residential gated communities side by side with each other.

Part of Southwark’s bourough the area is identified in the London Plan as one of 35

major centres in Greater London. Since the 1990s the European Union has invest-

ed heavily in the regeneration of the area. The main shopping street is Rye Lane and the large Peckham Rye Park is nearby. The area covers a large part of South London and takes in many diverse commu-

nities. A traditional London working class community now coexists with communities that have their origins in Bangladesh, the

Caribbean, China, India, Ireland, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey, Eastern Europe and Vietnam. As well as these communi-

ties there has been a steady gentrification of some of the areas to the south of Peckham and this has meant an influx of cafes, wine

bars, niche shops and artists’ studios.

Situatued on the right way out of the Peckham Rye station ( 5 mins walking distance), the Liberal Club is very well placed in the neighbourhood of Rye Lane. Close to the busy street with markets, McDonalds and shops, it benefit of a very good and easy access to anyone who wants to enter the club. The wide street with the little square garden at the front give to the club a friendly atmosphere to begin with. The Elm Grove is a quiet residential streetand the Club is a very well preserved piece of local history. 700 people were recorded to be members of the Club time ago and they were mostly business man from Rye Lane.It is an increasingly rare exemple of the ‘working men’s clubs’ that have largely closed down in London.

WHAT PEOPLE THINK

Natasha (37) Tajournee (16) Caribbean, used to live in Peckham. “People in this area are really about their apperance, they care about it and they like to treat their body. They care more about their body than their mental health to be honest. We think that if you provide a gym it would be a good attraction for people to get in with classes like Zumba, street dance, trampoline... ” Ola (26) Nigerian, always lived in Peckham. “There is a broad range of age in this area, I wouldn’t be able to say if there is more younger than older people, I definitly say that there is lots of people of my age. About health care provided ? I’d say that there is not enough around” Majid-Ali Khan (30) Pakistan, 7 years merchant in Peckham. “Peckham is a really well served area in terms of transportation, so people don’t mind travelling from outside the district to get here as they are attracted to these busy marquets. There is a strong cultural mix influence, so you’ll find many different shops but most people come here for food and beauty” Freddy (34) Brazilian, computer scientist, spent 15 years in Peckham. “I like the idea of an health and fitness kind of club close to Rye Lane. The Peckham Pulse Leisure centre is good but it is the only one around. Most of the health facilities there need refurbishement as they don’t look healthy at all and some of them havn’t been working for months!”

Peckham Experiment

The Peckham Experiment took place between 1926 and 1950, initially generated by rising public concern over the health of the working class and an increasing interest in preventative social medicine. Williamson and Pearse recruited 950 local families to be part of “The Peckham Experiment”. Paying one shilling (5 pence) a week, they had access to a range of activities such as physical exercise, swimming, games and workshops. Members underwent a medical examination once a year, and they were monitored throughout the year as they participated in the Centre’s events.
