Concept Selective focus is when a limited depth of field is focused sharply on the specific part of the subject, highlighting and emphasizing the specific area of interest, while the rest of

the subject is clearly out of focus, falling into the blur of the background. Although the parts that are in focus and the parts that are out of focus are equally as important, selective focus draws specific attention to a particular detail which evokes a meditative or contemplative mood when viewing the subject in context of its blurred but SELECTIVE FOCUS selected works of EMILIE GARNIER
recognizable surroundings. Selective focus, as it pertains to my personal design methodology, is about finding that one detail or attribute that makes the subject unique and special, then emphasizing it and bringing it to light. It is about looking at the subject from a unique and different perspective that is intrinsic to and special about the subject matter and which usually is more than what meets the eye.

Objective Select a brand that is dying, defunct or dead and identify its essence. Revive the brand by repositioning and expanding the new brand’s identity and creating new extensions that open the company to a whole new demographic while still remaining true to its original soul. Approach I chose to rebrand Max Factor, a cosmetic brand born in the early 1900s geared toward women. The brand needed to be modernized by changing the old face/aesthetic of the standardized and expected portrayal/depiction of the female, breaking away from the outdated social standard that the only attributes that define women are the physical and sensual. Throughout the revival process, the brand had to stay true to its origin and essence from its birth in the chemistry labs, it’s essence being the science of human attraction.

Objective Demonstrate the ability to go through the UI/UX design process which includes conducting user research, user journey, user testing, generating the app concept, designing information architecture and creating various prototypes, and finally, designing a cohesive user interface which functions within a cohesive and effective user flow. Approach I chose to create an event app for young professionals. An app that allowed the user to be connected to various communities, to fields of specific interest in order to stay connected within their industry, to create opportunities through networking, to stay in tune with the new knowledge of their industry and, most importantly, to never miss an important event pertinent to your career or passion.

Objective Identify a problem that can be improved/solved through the graphic design process by conducting research, investigating various audiences and stakeholders, and integrating a variety of design solutions using a comprehensive branding system. Approach The problem that this project is addressing is the concept of food deserts present in the Tenderloin and Oakland. The goal of Urban Seed is to promote the concept of a healthier lifestyle within a community, a healthy lifestyle available to all people, spanning all socio-demographic groups and geographical locations. Through research and process development, a solidified brand was created and three types of deliverables are the outcome of this project: an app that helps people locate fresh healthful foods within a desert, an editorial, and a cooking workshop kit.

Concept Design a holistic visual system for a hypothetical design conference. Create a list of guest speakers relevant to the chosen theme, a schedule, a website, an app, a poster and an information booklet. Objective The goal of this project is to create a design conference with guest speakers presenting ideas and concepts under one coherent theme. In this case, the concept is space and how space is used in design or interacts with design. The graphics are meant to express the feeling of depth, layering, space and relativity to one another.

Objective Create a book which serves as a medium for a narrative sequence of a visual observation of a specific personal experience. The goal was to observe and think about a specific moment and space and use design as a means of expression and annotation and recording of these sensations, observations and thoughts. Approach This visual experiment served as a means of recording my experience and physical sensations as well as the phenomenon that occurs when you find yourself in Nature, not only the experience felt through the physical senses, but also the phenomenon of self-reflection that occurs when you find yourself in solitude within natural environments.

Objective Design a magazine based on a specific subject. Compile and organize a minimum of five articles that depict the subject matter. Create a cohesive visual system through imagery and typography. Approach Ink & Water is an editorial project about the art of tattooing and the use of ink and water based media. The concept of the magazine is to portray the tattoo subculture as one that is more benign, more delicate and beautiful than is commonly depicted, with a focus on the artistic process and intimate portrait photography.

Objective Create a hypothetical film festival dedicated to a director of your choice. Discover a common thread that appears in each of the directors’ films and conceptualize a design aesthetic that brings it to life. Develop a visual identity and a cohesive visual system which will be expressed throughout a variety of different media all of which, capture the essence of the film festival. Approach I chose to develop a Coen Brothers’ Film Festival titled “Killer Plans”. The recurring theme or common thread I found in their movies was the portrayal of selfish schemers who orchestrate absurd plans that go completely wrong. Killer Plans distills and translates the feelings of the films into words, imagery, objects and graphics.

Concept Consider the conceptual/abstract meaning of a word, the thoughts associated to a specific word and what the signifier means linguistically and visually. Design a poster in black and white that expresses your interpretation of the concept. Objective I chose the word “Apex� and thought of it as stratified layers which create complexity and hierarchy in nature and society. I created a series of abstract photographic images as a means of textural expression of the concept. Custom letterforms were designed to express the concept.

Objective Concept, research, design, pre-production techniques for motion graphics are covered with a focus on animating typography, graphic symbols, shapes and colors to build a professional project with dynamic and fluid transitions. Approach This project serves as a promotional piece for an exhibition that took place at the SF Moma called “Typeface to Interface�, which covers the journey and transformation of typography itself, the media, functions and usage, from the era of the typewriter until today. The intent was to translate this large quantity of information into a cohesive, highly graphic and simplified visual language, while still depicting key elements that were present in the exhibition.

Concept Develop an MFA thesis by defining a problem, distilling information and creating a solution through a graphic design approach.
